  • Nitrogen and phosphorus are thought to be the most important limiting nutrients in most terrestrial ecosystems, but little is known about how other elements may limit the abundance of arthropods. We utilized a fully factorial fertilization experiment that manipulated macronutrients (N and P, together) and micronutrients (calcium, sodium, potassium, separately), in large 30 × 30 m plots and sampled litter arthropods via pitfall trapping to determine the nutrients that limit this group. https://www.selleckchem.com/btk.html An invasive ant, Nylanderia fulva, numerically dominated the community and increased in abundance 13% in plots fertilized by Ca.     Recent research has shown that socio-emotional and language competencies are positively associated with each other. However, few studies have explored these associations for the second language competencies (L2) of young dual language learners (DLLs).

    This longitudinal study investigated possible bidirectional associations between L2 language (expressive and receptive vocabulary) and socio-emotional competencies among preschool DLLs.

    The participants were 216 German DLLs (M
    =52.67months; SD=9.54; 53% girls) who were recruited from 19 preschools.

    L2 skills were assessed at three time points over the course of one year using standardized tests for expressive and receptive vocabulary. Children's teachers rated their socio-emotional strengths and behaviour concerns. Cross-lagged panel analyses were used to examine the temporal interplay and longitudinal directionality of effects controlling for children's age, sex, type of language acquisition (sequential vs. simultaneous), and socio-economic status.

    Vocabulary skills and socio-emotional skills were positively correlated with one another at each time point, such that children with better language proficiency were rated by their teachers as children with higher levels of socio-emotional competence. Moreover, our results provided support for an effect of early socio-emotional skills (T1) on the relative increase in L2 vocabulary skills (T2 & T3), particularly for expressive vocabulary. However, our results did not demonstrate a statistically significant effect of better L2 language skills on the relative change in socio-emotional competencies.

This study examined the interaction of the microbiome with transcriptomic footprints of apoptosis, autophagy and hypoxia pathways during periodontitis. Adult Macaca mulatta (n = 18; 12-23 years of age) exhibiting a healthy periodontium at baseline were used to induce progressing periodontitis through ligature placement around premolar/molar teeth. Gingival tissue samples collected at baseline, 0·5, 1 and 3 months of disease and at 5 months for disease resolution were analysed via microarray. Bacterial samples were collected at identical sites to the host tissues and analysed using MiSeq. Significant changes in apoptosis and hypoxia gene expression occurred with initiation of disease, while autophagy gene changes generally emerged later in disease progression samples. These interlinked pathways contributing to cellular homeostasis showed significant correlations between altered gene expression profiles in apoptosis, autophagy and hypoxia with groups of genes correlated in different directions across health and disease samples. Bacterial complexes were identified that correlated significantly with profiles of host genes in health, disease and resolution for each pathway. These relationships were more robust in health and resolution samples, with less bacterial complex diversity during disease. Using these pathways as cellular responses to stress in the local periodontal environment, the data are consistent with the concept of dysbiosis at the functional genomics level. It appears that the same bacteria in a healthy microbiome may be interfacing with host cells differently than in a disease lesion site and contributing to the tissue destructive processes.NLRX1 is a member of the NOD-like receptor family, a set of pattern recognition receptors associated with innate immunity.   • The efficiency of organo-lead halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices is dramatically lower for amorphous materials compared to highly crystalline ones. Therefore, it is challenging to optimize and scale up the production of large-sized single crystals of perovskite materials. Here, we describe a novel and original approach to preparing lead halide perovskite single crystals by applying microwave radiation during the crystallization. The microwave radiation primarily causes precise heating control in the whole volume and avoids temperature fluctuations. Moreover, this facile microwave-assisted method of preparation is highly reproducible and fully automated, it and can be applied for various different perovskite structures. In addition, this cost-effective method is expected to be easily scalable because of its versatility and low energy consumption. The crystallization process has low heat losses; therefore, only a low microwave reactor power of 8-15 W during the temperature changes and of less than 1 W during the temperature holding is needed. CCK-8 and Transwell assays were employed to test ESCC cell proliferation and invasion, respectively. RNA pull-down, ChIP and luciferase reporter assays were employed to test the relationship between linc02042, YBX1 and c-Myc. Results Linc02042 was found to be markedly upregulated in ESCC cell lines, tissues and plasma, and was closely correlated with malignant clinical features. Knockdown of linc02042 significantly inhibited ESCC cell viability and invasion in vitro as well as tumor growth and lung metastasis in vivo, whereas overexpression of linc02042 resulted in the opposite results. Mechanistically, linc02042 acted as a scaffold for YBX-1 binding to the 3'-UTR of c-****mRNA, leading to enhanced c-****mRNA stability, thereby facilitating ESCC growth and metastasis. Moreover, in turn, c-****was able to transcriptionally elevate linc02042 by directly binding to the E-box motif proximal to the transcription start site (TSS) of linc02042 promoter. Clinically, linc02042 was identified as an effective diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for ESCC patients, and its expression was strongly positively correlated with c-****expression in ESCC tissues. The study aimed to describe (i) hospital-based JE cases and deaths between 2012 and 2017, (ii) a catch-up vaccination campaign in children in 2017, and (iii) health service provider perceptions about JE in one township in 2018. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of cases, deaths, and catch-up childhood vaccinations using secondary data from program records and a survey database of health service provider perceptions. Results Between 2012 and 2017, there were 872 JE cases and 79 deaths with a case fatality rate of 91 per 1000; 2016 was the year with most cases and deaths. Most cases (n = 324) and deaths (n = 37) occurred in children aged 5-9 years. A total of 21 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer took part. Non-parametric testing was performed given the pilot nature of the study and the associated relatively small sample size. Results Small to medium changes in illness perceptions and functional health between the two measurement points were detected, with both becoming more positive. More negative illness perceptions at the beginning of the treatment were associated with less functioning and lower quality of life at both beginning and end of treatment. Secondly, other influence factors such as income and area of residence were also significantly related to the availability of long-term rental services. Here, we report that HCMV infection or treatment of ARPE-19 diploid epithelial cells with DNA-damaging agents, etoposide or zeocin, induces HSATII RNA expression, and a kinase-independent function of ATM is required for the induction. Using transcriptome-wide characterization of gene expression, splicing, and translation, we found a significant deterioration in the transcriptional activation of the heat shock response in stressed senescent cells. Furthermore, phosphorylated HSF1 nuclear localization and distribution were impaired in senescence. Interestingly, alternative splicing regulation was also dampened. Surprisingly, we found a decoupling between different unfolded protein response (UPR) branches in stressed senescent cells. While young cells initiated UPR-related translational and transcriptional regulatory responses, senescent cells showed enhanced translational regulation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress sensing; however, they were unable to trigger UPR-related transcriptional responses. This was accompanied by diminished ATF6 nuclear localization in stressed senescent cells. Finally, we found that proteasome function was impaired following heat stress in senescent cells, and did not recover upon return to normal temperature.     A descriptive quantitative cross-sectional survey design.

    Data on burnout and its most significant causes were collected by surveying 39 perioperative nurses in a regional hospital in Saudi Arabia using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and a self-developed questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to perform statistical analysis.

    Burnout was detected in 5% of respondents. A high level of emotional exhaustion was detected in 87.2%. Similarly, a high level of depersonalization was detected in 56.4%, while 15.4% of nurses showed a low sense of personal accomplishment. Several factors were identified as the causes of burnout such as high workload, staff shortage, poor teamwork, insufficient salary and occupational hazards. However, lack of departmental support and undesirable supervision in the workplace seem to be the main causes of burnout.

    This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2018 to May 2019 on 291 nurses working in public hospitals in south Iran (Rafsanjan). The nurses were selected by convenience sampling method. Data were collected using the ProQOL questionnaire that included three subscales compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress and burnout and the Competency Inventory for Registered Nurse (CIRN) that measured clinical competence.

Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed.

    Although most nursing students had favourable attitudes towards death and caring for the dying, students had low level of knowledge and self-efficacy regarding palliative care, suggesting the need for integrating palliative care education into nursing curriculum in China. Moreover, special attention should be paid to psychosocial and spiritual care teaching and preparing students to psychologically deal with the challenges in the process of patient's dying.

    A one-group pre-test-post-test study design was used.

    A convenience sample of 178 undergraduate students registered in a 3-credit health promotion course was enrolled in the study and completed both pre- and post-tests. This course is offered as an elective course for undergraduate students by the Faculty of Nursing at a large public university in Jordan. Twelve, one-hour interactive sessions regarding CNCDs topics were delivered over 3weeks as part of the health promotion course. A computer-based questionnaire was used to evaluate students' knowledge and attitudes towards CNCDs including diabetes, hypertension and cancer, before and after undertaking the course.

First, pembrolizumab was approved for either microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) or DNA mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) unresectable, or metastatic solid tumors, including HCC and biliary tract cancer (BTC) in May 2017. After CheckMate-040, nivolumab gained approval in late 2017 in the second-line setting for patients with advanced HCC and Child-Pugh A or B7 liver disease. Pembrolizumab was granted FDA approval in 2018 in the second-line setting after publication of KEYNOTE-224 for patients with advanced HCC and Child-Pugh A liver disease.   • The gold standard for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis is prostate biopsy. However, it remines controversial as an invasive mean for patients with PSA levels in the gray zone (4-10 ng/mL). This study aimed to develop strategy to reduce the unnecessary prostate biopsy. We retrospectively identified 235 patients with serum total PSA testing in the gray zone before prostate biopsy between 2014 and 2018. Age, PSA derivates, prostate volume and multiparametric magnetic imaging (mpMRI) examination were assessed as predictors for PCa and clinically significant PCa with Gleason score ≥ 7 (CSPCa). Univariate analysis showed that prostate volume, PSAD, and mpMRI examination were significant predictors of PCa and CSPCa (P  less then  0.05). The differences of diagnostic accuracy between mpMRI examination (AUC = 0.69) and other clinical parameters in diagnostic accuracy for PCa were not statistically significant. However, mpMRI examination (AUC = 0.79) outperformed prostate volume and PSAD in diagnosis of CSPCa. However in the world's largest coral reef ecosystem, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), the response to enhanced terrestrial nutrient inputs since European settlement in the 1850's remains unclear. Here we use a 333 year old composite record (1680-2012) of 15N/14N in coral skeleton-bound organic matter to understand how nitrogen cycling in the coastal GBR has responded to increased anthropogenic nutrient inputs. Our major robust finding is that the coral record shows a long-term decline in skeletal 15N/14N towards the present. We argue that this decline is evidence for increased coastal nitrogen fixation rather than a direct reflection of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. Reducing phosphorus discharge and availability would short-circuit the nitrogen fixation feedback loop and help avoid future acute and chronic eutrophication in the coastal GBR.The conserved ribosome-associated complex (RAC) consisting of Zuo1 (Hsp40) and Ssz1 (non-canonical Hsp70) acts together with the ribosome-bound Hsp70 chaperone Ssb in de novo protein folding at the ribosomal tunnel exit. Current models suggest that the function of Ssz1 is confined to the support of Zuo1, however, it is not known whether RAC by itself serves as a chaperone for nascent chains. Here we show that, via its rudimentary substrate binding domain (SBD), Ssz1 directly binds to emerging nascent chains prior to Ssb. Structural and biochemical analyses identify a conserved LP-motif at the Zuo1 N-terminus forming a polyproline-II helix, which binds to the Ssz1-SBD as a pseudo-substrate. The LP-motif competes with nascent chain binding to the Ssz1-SBD and modulates nascent chain transfer. Gene expressions of pro-apoptotic Bax, caspase-3 and caspase-9 of the DIO-E. coli groups were lower than those of DIO-PBS groups at 12, 24 and 72 h (p  less then  0.05). The SC apoptosis rates of the Lean-E. coli groups were higher than those of the Lean- PBS groups at 12 h and 24 h (p  less then  0.05). It demonstrates both presynaptic and postsynaptic activities and remedies the absence of the enhanced depression effect in the depression region, allowing a better description of the biological counterpart. The threshold sliding effect of Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro rule is realized using a history-dependent property of the second-order memristor. Rate-based orientation selectivity is demonstrated in a simulated feedforward memristive network with this generalized Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro framework. These findings provide a feasible approach for mimicking Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro learning rules in memristors, and support the applications of spatiotemporal coding and learning using memristive networks.

We retrospectively identified 235 patients with serum total PSA testing in the gray zone before prostate biopsy between 2014 and 2018. Age, PSA derivates, prostate volume and multiparametric magnetic imaging (mpMRI) examination were assessed as predictors for PCa and clinically significant PCa with Gleason score ≥ 7 (CSPCa). Univariate analysis showed that prostate volume, PSAD, and mpMRI examination were significant predictors of PCa and CSPCa (P  less then  0.05). The differences of diagnostic accuracy between mpMRI examination (AUC = 0.69) and other clinical parameters in diagnostic accuracy for PCa were not statistically significant. However, mpMRI examination (AUC = 0.79) outperformed prostate volume and PSAD in diagnosis of CSPCa. Here we use a 333 year old composite record (1680-2012) of 15N/14N in coral skeleton-bound organic matter to understand how nitrogen cycling in the coastal GBR has responded to increased anthropogenic nutrient inputs. Our major robust finding is that the coral record shows a long-term decline in skeletal 15N/14N towards the present. We argue that this decline is evidence for increased coastal nitrogen fixation rather than a direct reflection of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. Structural and biochemical analyses identify a conserved LP-motif at the Zuo1 N-terminus forming a polyproline-II helix, which binds to the Ssz1-SBD as a pseudo-substrate. The threshold sliding effect of Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro rule is realized using a history-dependent property of the second-order memristor. Rate-based orientation selectivity is demonstrated in a simulated feedforward memristive network with this generalized Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro framework. The distinction between pseudothrombocytopenia and true thrombocytopenia is of great clinical relevance, as the former is merely a laboratory artefact, and does not require blood product transfusions despite apparently severe reductions in platelet counts. It is therefore important to recognise that apparent thrombocytopenia, especially in patients with an acute febrile illness due to scrub typhus, is not always true thrombocytopenia. © Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion 2019.The present study aimed to investigate the clinical effects of the brand new perioperative transfusion trigger score (POTTS) system in patients undergoing malignant tumor surgeries. 442 cases of patients diagnosed with malignant tumor were randomly selected (from January 2012 to December 2016) from Zunyi Medical University and were divided into 3 experimental groups. Patients in the POTTS group were transfused by the POTTS guideline perioperatively, while patients in the 7-10 g group were treated by the traditional transfusion guidelines existed (restrictive transfusion strategy), patients in the 10 g group should be transfused to keep the Hb level no less than 10 g/dL (liberal transfusion strategy). Baseline information, operation time, bleeding volume, transfusion amount, incision healing time, postoperative complications, metastasis and recurrence were observed and recorded. Postoperative short-term mortality was comparable of the 3 groups, 3 cases of death all occurred in 10 g group, there was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications, including infectious complications and coagulation related complications. Follow-up to date, there were 25 cases, 29 cases and 29 cases of tumor recurrence and metastasis in the three groups, but no statistical difference observed. Though with the advances of transfusion medicine, the incidences of transfusion risk is gradually reduced, but the adverse transfusion reaction (ATR) of non hemolytic type still prevails. The purpose of this study was to estimate the incidence and pattern of transfusion-related adverse events at our centre. The present retrospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Transfusion Medicine from April 2011 to April 2018, at a multi-organ transplant centre in South India. All the Adverse transfusion reactions were investigated in detail in the blood bank for the clerical errors, immunohematology workup and classified according to their nature with imputability assessment. A total of 140 ATR were reported out of 100,569 blood components distributed during the study period. After the analysis and workup of the reported reactions, majority of the reactions were observed in males (71%, n = 99). Most common symptom presented was Itching/Rashes in 43.6% (n = 61) ATR. Allergic reactions (51.4%, n = 72), were the most commonly encountered ATR followed by FNHTR (25.7%, n = 36). FFP transfusions (0.2%) contributed to the majority of the reactions followed by Red cell transfusion (0.15%). ATR were observed maximum in Hepato-biliary disease and liver transplantation patients (62%) followed by oncology patients (15%). The overall incidence of ATR in our study is 0.14% which is comparatively low compared to other studies due to well established hemovigilance systems. This prospective cohort study was conducted from 1st November 2011 to 30th April 2013. The clinical history, blood component details and laboratory parameters were evaluated with clinical outcome. The neonates requiring PC and FFP transfusion were followed up in blood bank for laboratory parameters. Clinical parameters were noted from case file. During the study period, 291 neonates were admitted in NICU. 2 neonates had congenital malformations and thus, were excluded from the study. Of the remaining 289 neonates, 49 neonates received transfusion of platelets and/or FFP. The combined mean donor exposure for all components was found to be 1.

  • Despite taxonomic differences, the established laryngeal microbiota from cecal content exhibited similarity to commensal resident microbiota in diversity within/between communities and predicted metagenomic functions. Our data also suggests little difference in bacterial distribution across the larynx and its surrounding regions and that cell motility and the ability to degrade xenobiotics is critical for bacteria colonizing upper airway. Successful colonization of laryngeal and oropharyngeal regions with gut microbiota in our study will greatly facilitate the investigation of potential localized inflammatory responses within host tissues that contribute to the disorders of essential laryngeal functions. Utilizing said gnotobiotic model to conduct future studies will allow for novel insights into direct microbial contributions to laryngeal epithelial health and pathogenesis.As one of the important ruminants of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Tibetan sheep are able to reproduce and maintain their population in this harsh environment of extreme cold and low oxygen. However, the adaptive mechanism of Tibetan sheep when nutrients are scarce in the cold season of the Plateau environment is unclear. We conducted comparative analysis rumen fermentation parameters, rumen microbes, and expression of host genes related to nutrient absorption and rumen epithelial barrier function in cold and warm season Tibetan sheep. We found that concentrations of the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) acetate, propionate and butyrate of Tibetan sheep in the cold season were significantly higher than in the warm season (P less then 0.05). Microbial 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed significant differences in rumen microbiota between the cold and warm seasons, and the abundance of microbial in the cold season was significantly higher than that in the warm season (P less then 0.05), and the lack of nutrients in the cold season led to a significant reduction in the expression of SGLT1, Claudin-4, and ZO-1 genes in the rumen epithelium. The results indicated that the abundances of the detected ARGs ranged from 3.6 × 103 to 1.13 × 108 copies/g. The ARGs with the highest abundance was sul2, and the lowest was blaCTX. Composting removes most of the ARGs and MGEs by 22.8-99.7%. These ARGs were significantly reduced during the thermophilic phase of compost. The removal rate of ARGs at the different layers of compost pile was different as follows middle layer > upper layer > lower layer. But some ARGs proliferated significantly in the maturation phase of compost, especially the sulfonamide resistance genes. Compound microbial inoculants increased the temperature of compost, accelerated water loss, nitrogen fixation, and increased the removal rate of β-lactamase resistance genes, the transposon gene tn916 and part of tetracycline resistance genes by 3.7-23.8% in compost. Compound microbial inoculants changed the community structure and increased the Bacillus abundance in the thermophilic phase of compost. And it was helpful for removing pathogens during composting. Lysine acetylation is a conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that plays a critical regulatory role in diverse cellular processes. However, little is known about the role of lysine acetylation on the pathogenesis of V. vulnificus. Here, we report the complete genome sequence and a global profile for protein lysine acetylation of V. vulnificus Vv180806, a highly cefoxitin resistant strain isolated from a mortality case. The assembled genome comprised two circular chromosomes and one circular plasmid; it contained 4,770 protein-coding genes and 153 RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed genetic homology of this strain with other V. vulnificus strains from food sources. Of all the proteins in this strain, 1,924 (40.34%) were identified to be acetylated at 6,626 sites. The acetylated proteins were enriched in metabolic processes, binding functions, cytoplasm, and multiple central metabolic pathways. Moreover, the acetylation was found in most identified virulence factors of this strain, suggesting its potentially important role in bacterial virulence. Our work provides insights into the genomic and acetylomic features responsible for the virulence and antibiotic resistance of V. vulnificus, which will facilitate future investigations on the pathogenesis of this bacterium.

The results indicated that the abundances of the detected ARGs ranged from 3.6 × 103 to 1.13 × 108 copies/g. The ARGs with the highest abundance was sul2, and the lowest was blaCTX. Composting removes most of the ARGs and MGEs by 22.8-99.7%. These ARGs were significantly reduced during the thermophilic phase of compost. The removal rate of ARGs at the different layers of compost pile was different as follows middle layer > upper layer > lower layer. But some ARGs proliferated significantly in the maturation phase of compost, especially the sulfonamide resistance genes. Lysine acetylation is a conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that plays a critical regulatory role in diverse cellular processes. However, little is known about the role of lysine acetylation on the pathogenesis of V. vulnificus. Here, we report the complete genome sequence and a global profile for protein lysine acetylation of V. vulnificus Vv180806, a highly cefoxitin resistant strain isolated from a mortality case. The assembled genome comprised two circular chromosomes and one circular plasmid; it contained 4,770 protein-coding genes and 153 RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed genetic homology of this strain with other V. vulnificus strains from food sources. Of all the proteins in this strain, 1,924 (40.34%) were identified to be acetylated at 6,626 sites. The acetylated proteins were enriched in metabolic processes, binding functions, cytoplasm, and multiple central metabolic pathways. Moreover, the acetylation was found in most identified virulence factors of this strain, suggesting its potentially important role in bacterial virulence. Our work provides insights into the genomic and acetylomic features responsible for the virulence and antibiotic resistance of V. vulnificus, which will facilitate future investigations on the pathogenesis of this bacterium.
