This work demonstrates that CB2 receptors inhibit postsynaptic GABAA receptors by a postsynaptic mechanism in Purkinje cells. In our research, we introduce the reputation, rating cost and rating accuracy of rating agencies to improve the Hotelling model. According to the theoretical analysis and empirical tests, the results show that the open policy of the Chinese rating industry contributes to higher rating quality in the domestic bond market. This open policy leads to rating convergence between DRAs and GRAs from in the long term.Purpose Anatomically preshaped implants are needed for exact restoration of the anatomy after fractures of the proximal ulna and ulnar shaft, which enables a good functional outcome. Aim of this computed tomographic analysis was to identify specific characteristics of the ulna. The data serve for the development of a new intramedullary implant for stabilisation of proximal and diaphyseal ulna fractures. Methods With a standardized research method 100 CT scans of the ulna were evaluated regarding anatomic parameters like width of the medullary canal, proximal ulna dorsal angulation and varus angulation. Also, correlations of these parameters were analyzed statistically. Results The mean proximal ulna dorsal angulation (PUDA) was 6.4° (SD 2.8°), while the mean varus angulation of the proximal ulna was 12.4° (SD 3.3°). The length of the ulna bone was 253.6 mm (SD 19.9 mm) on average. The average minimum diameter of the medullary canal was 4.2 mm (SD 1.1 mm) located at 141.3 mm (SD 19.7 mm) from the olecranon tip. There is a positive correlation between age and minimum diameter in our patient cohort (p less then 0.001). Conclusion Our study described the anatomy of the proximal ulna and the ulna shaft with a reproducible research method in a representative patient cohort. The knowledge of the evaluated anatomic parameters can lead to an improvement of any implant design for the fixation of proximal and diaphyseal ulna fractures.Due to the complex role of sexual excitation in risky sexual behaviors, this study aimed to disentangle this phenomenon by jointly analyzing the combined role of three forms of sexual excitation genital and subjective, and individual´s propensity. Therefore, we examined the relationship between the components of the Dual Control Model, that is, propensity for sexual excitation/inhibition, in addition to genital and subjective arousal, and sexual assertiveness and intention to engage in casual sexual encounters in which sexual risk was implicitly or explicitly present. The sample consisted of 99 heterosexual young adults (55 men and 45 women) with ages ranging from 18 to 32 years. Participants performed an experiment in the laboratory, which involved them watching a sexual clip and then being presented with two erotic excerpts (stories) depicting casual sexual encounters in which there was an existence of implicit and explicit sexual risks. In men, the propensity for sexual inhibition was the most determining variable in preventing them from sexual risk-taking. In women, intention to engage in risky sexual behaviors was better determined by their propensity for sexual excitation and sexual assertiveness in negotiating the use of contraceptive methods. This research highlights the relevance of excitation and inhibition as a trait, in addition to subjective arousal and sexual assertiveness in intention to engage in risky sexual behaviors.

  • TAR DNA binding protein (TDP-43) is a DNA/RNA binding protein whose pathological role in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontal temporal lobe dementia (FTLD) via formation of protein aggregates is well established. In contrast, knowledge concerning its interactions with other neuropathological aggregating proteins is poorly understood. Human α-synuclein (HASN) elicits dopaminergic neuron degeneration via protein aggregation in Parkinson's disease. HASN protein aggregates are also found in TDP-43 lesions and colocalize in Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). To better understand the interactions of TDP-43 and HASN, we investigated the effects of genetic deletion of tdp-1, the Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of human TDP-43, as well as overexpression of TDP-43, in transgenic models overexpressing HASNWT and HASNA53T. Tdp-1 deletion improved the posture, movement, and developmental delay observed in transgenic animals pan-neuronally overexpressing HASNA53T, and attenuated the loss and impairment of dopaminergic neurons caused by HASNA53T or HASNWT overexpression. Tdp-1 deletion also led to a decrease in protein level, mRNA level and aggregate formation of HASN in living animals. RNA-seq studies suggested that tdp-1 supports expression of lysosomal genes and decreases expression of genes involved in heat shock. RNAi demonstrated that heat shock proteins can mediate HASN neuropathology. Co-overexpression of both human TDP-43 and HASNWT resulted in locomotion deficits, shorter lifespan, and more severe dopaminergic neuron impairments compared to single transgenes. Our results suggest TDP-1/TDP-43 potentiates HASN mediated neurodegeneration in C. elegans. This study indicates a multifunctional role for TDP-1/TDP-43 in neurodegeneration involving HASN.As the population ages, obesity and metabolic complications as well as neurological disorders are becoming more prevalent, with huge economic burdens on both societies and families. NGF and its precursor, proNGF, bind to TrkA and p75 receptors and initiate protein phosphorylation cascades, resulting in changes of cellular functions, and are associated with obesity, diabetes and its complications, and Alzheimer's disease. In this article, we summarize changes in NGF levels in metabolic and neuronal disorders, the signal transduction initiated by NGF and proNGF, the physiological and pathophysiological relevance, and therapeutic potential in treating chronic metabolic diseases and cognitive decline.Background There is a medical need for highly effective, safe, and well tolerated treatments for patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) with severe renal impairment. We investigated the safety and efficacy of sofosbuvir with ribavirin or ledipasvir combined with sofosbuvir in a prospective study of patients with genotype 1 or 3 HCV infection and stage 4-5 chronic kidney disease (creatinine clearance by Cockcroft-Gault ≤30 mL/min) who were not on dialysis. Methods This phase 2b, open-label, non-randomised, multicentre study in the USA and New Zealand investigated three sequentially enrolled cohorts of patients. Patients were recruited from ten hospitals and clinical research centres and were included if they had genotype 1 or 3 HCV infection, a creatinine clearance less than or equal to 30 mL/min, and were not on dialysis. In cohorts 1 and 2, patients received sofosbuvir (200 mg in cohort 1 and 400 mg in cohort 2) plus ribavirin 200 mg once per day for 24 weeks. In cohort 3, 18 patients received ledipae events overall were headache (eight [21%] of 38 patients), anaemia (seven [18%] of 38 patients), and fatigue (six [16%] of 38 patients). Methods We performed routine laboratory tests suitable to identify tissue damage and inflammatory status in 123 consecutive CoVID-19 patients admitted to the Emergency Department of the hospital of Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy). The results were correlated with patients' respiratory function evaluated by the partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (PaO2/FiO2). Results The most common laboratory abnormalities were lymphocytopenia and elevated values of C-reactive protein (CRP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatine kinase (CK) were also increased. The respiratory performance (PaO2/FiO2) showed a strong inverse correlation with LDH (r = 0.62, r2 0.38, p value less then 0.0001) and CRP (r = 0.55, r2 0.31, p value less then 0.0001). PaO2/FiO2 values also showed a significant inverse correlation with age (r = -0.37, p less then 0.0001), AST (r = -0.31, p less then 0.01), WBC (r = -0.49, p less then 0.0001), neutrophils count (r = -0.5, p less then 0.001). ROC curves showed a sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 70% for the LDH cut-off value of 450 U/L and a sensitivity of 72% and specificity of 71% for the CRP cut-off value of 11 mg/dl in identifying CoVID-19 with moderate-severe ARDS. Conclusions LDH and CRP may be related to respiratory function (PaO2/FiO2) and be a predictor of respiratory failure in CoVID-19 patients. LDH and CRP should be considered a useful test for the early identification of patients who require closer respiratory monitoring and more aggressive supportive therapies to avoid poor prognosis.

  • Somitogenesis, the primary segmentation of the vertebrate embryo, is associated with oscillating genes that interact with a wave of cell differentiation. The necessity of cell-matrix adherence and embryonic tension, however, suggests that mechanical cues are also involved. To explicitly investigate this, we applied surplus axial strain to live chick embryos. Despite substantial deformations, the embryos developed normally and somite formation rate was unaffected. Surprisingly, however, we observed slow cellular reorganizations of the most elongated somites into two or more well-shaped daughter somites. In what appeared to be a regular process of boundary formation, somites divided and fibronectin was deposited in between. Cell counts and morphology indicated that cells from the somitocoel underwent mesenchymal-epithelial transition; this was supported by a Cellular Potts model of somite division. Thus, although somitogenesis appeared to be extremely robust, we observed new boundary formation in existing somites and conclude that mechanical strain can be morphologically instructive. Alcohol-induced liver injury is characterized by strong inflammation. Polysaccharides separated from herbs can prevent ethanol-induced liver injury. Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo leaves (D. officinale) are a new food resource that contains a certain amount of polysaccharide. However, the hepatoprotective effects and the potential mechanisms of D. officinale polysaccharide (DOP) remain unknown. Thus, this study aimed to assess the hepatoprotective effects and potential mechanism in vivo and in vitro of DOP. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used to establish alcohol-induced liver injury models through the oral gavage of absolute alcohol (5 mL/kg) after the oral administration of DOP (400 and 100 mg/kg) for 30 days. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used for the histological assessments of hepatocyte degeneration, and the AST and ALT levels in the serum and liver tissue were measured. The inflammatory markers were evaluated using ELISA and immunohistochemistry. The potential mechanism of DOP in alcohol-induced liver cell (LO2) injury in vitro was further identified. Results showed that DOP clearly decreased the AST in the serum and hepatic tissue, obviously reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α), and can successfully inhibit NF-κB phosphorylation in vivo. In vitro experiments indicated that DOP increased the LO2 cell viability; prevented LDH release prominently; reduced the secretion of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α; and reversed the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, caspase 1, NLRP3, p-NF-κB, and TLR4. Overall, DOP can alleviate ethanol-induced acute liver injury via the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. OBJECTIVE Recent reports have suggested that seizures may be a component of the clinical presentation in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG-Ab)-associated disease. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate the occurrence of epileptic seizures in the disease. METHODS We searched PubMed, MEDLINE and EMBASE for studies reporting the occurrence of acute symptomatic seizures in MOG-Ab-associated disease. Fixed or random effects model was used to pool results across studies with a meta-analysis. RESULTS A total of 14 studies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, acute symptomatic seizures were observed in 20.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 13.7%-30.7%, I2=60.6%) patients with MOG-Ab-associated disease, and in a similar proportion of children respectively (20.0%; 95% CI 14.3%-27.8%, I2=7.0%). The pooled probability of seizure occurrence in males was 30.1% (95% CI 17.5%-52%, I2=0.0%) while that in females was **** lower (12.0%; 95% CI 5.5%-26.4%, I2=0.0%). Furthermore, when we focused on those with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis-like phenotype, 37.3% patients experienced seizures (95% CI 21.0%-66.3%, I2=55.8%). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested that epileptic seizures were common in MOG-Ab-associated disease and offered insight into associated factors that contribute to the occurrence of seizures. Moreover, erythrocytes of patients with a bleeding disorder and mutations in the scramblase TMEM16F show impaired PS exposure and microvesiculation upon treatment with calcium ionophore. In the first stage, tailored operating conditions applied to a sequencing batch reactor were effective in sustaining a lactate concentration of 12.4 g/L, corresponding to 89% of the total organic acids produced. In the second stage, the stimulation of lactate-centered dark fermentation which entails the decoupling of biohydrogen production from carbohydrates utilization was an effective approach enabling stable biohydrogen production, having HPR fluctuations less than 10% with a maximum HPR of 12.3 L/L-d and a biohydrogen yield of 3.1 L/LTV. Finally, 1.6 L CH4/L-d and 6.5 L CH4/LTV were obtained when feeding the biohydrogen fermentation effluent to a third methanogenic stage, yielding a global energy recovery of 267.5 kJ/LTV.
    Somitogenesis, the primary segmentation of the vertebrate embryo, is associated with oscillating genes that interact with a wave of cell differentiation. The necessity of cell-matrix adherence and embryonic tension, however, suggests that mechanical cues are also involved. To explicitly investigate this, we applied surplus axial strain to live chick embryos. Despite substantial deformations, the embryos developed normally and somite formation rate was unaffected. Surprisingly, however, we observed slow cellular reorganizations of the most elongated somites into two or more well-shaped daughter somites. In what appeared to be a regular process of boundary formation, somites divided and fibronectin was deposited in between. Cell counts and morphology indicated that cells from the somitocoel underwent mesenchymal-epithelial transition; this was supported by a Cellular Potts model of somite division. Thus, although somitogenesis appeared to be extremely robust, we observed new boundary formation in existing somites and conclude that mechanical strain can be morphologically instructive. Alcohol-induced liver injury is characterized by strong inflammation. Polysaccharides separated from herbs can prevent ethanol-induced liver injury. Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo leaves (D. officinale) are a new food resource that contains a certain amount of polysaccharide. However, the hepatoprotective effects and the potential mechanisms of D. officinale polysaccharide (DOP) remain unknown. Thus, this study aimed to assess the hepatoprotective effects and potential mechanism in vivo and in vitro of DOP. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used to establish alcohol-induced liver injury models through the oral gavage of absolute alcohol (5 mL/kg) after the oral administration of DOP (400 and 100 mg/kg) for 30 days. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used for the histological assessments of hepatocyte degeneration, and the AST and ALT levels in the serum and liver tissue were measured. The inflammatory markers were evaluated using ELISA and immunohistochemistry. The potential mechanism of DOP in alcohol-induced liver cell (LO2) injury in vitro was further identified. Results showed that DOP clearly decreased the AST in the serum and hepatic tissue, obviously reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α), and can successfully inhibit NF-κB phosphorylation in vivo. In vitro experiments indicated that DOP increased the LO2 cell viability; prevented LDH release prominently; reduced the secretion of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α; and reversed the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, caspase 1, NLRP3, p-NF-κB, and TLR4. Overall, DOP can alleviate ethanol-induced acute liver injury via the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway.   • The gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining human health. Accumulating evidence has indicated an intimate relationship between gut microbiota and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) which has become the leading cause of death worldwide. The alteration of gut microbial composition (gut dysbiosis) has been proven to contribute to atherosclerosis, the basic pathological process of CVD. In addition, the metabolites of gut microbiota have been found to be closely related to the development of CVD. For example, short-chain fatty acids are widely acclaimed beneficial effect against CVD, whereas trimethylamine-N-oxide is considered as a contributing factor in the development of CVD. In this chapter, we mainly discuss the gut microbial metabolite-involved mechanisms of CVD focusing on atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and heart failure. Targeting gut microbiota and related metabolites are novel and promising strategies for the treatment of CVD.Renal injury, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD), is closely associated with gut microbiota. It is well known that renal injury development could cause enteric microbial compositional disruption. On the other hand, gut microbial composition, as well as their function, would directly influence the renal disease progression. Here, in the present chapter, we will summarize the crosstalk between intestinal microbiota and renal disease and discuss some potential therapeutic approaches based on this topic.The brain-gut axis is a bidirectional communication pathway connecting the central nervous system (CNS) and the gastrointestinal tract via nerve transmission, hormone, immune system, and other molecular signals. The bacterial flora of the human gut contributes direct and indirect signals to the CNS along the brain-gut axis. An increase in recent literature has highlighted the role of the gut-brain axis in CNS pathology. This chapter reviews the association between gut flora dysbiosis and disorders of the central nervous system including autoimmune disease, developmental disorders, physiologic response to traumatic injury, and neurodegenerative disease.Gut microbiota are known to impact multiple organs including the lung. The cross talk between gut microbes and lungs, termed as the "gut-lung axis," is vital for immune response and homeostasis in the airways. In this chapter, we summarized the coordinated development of microorganisms in the gut and lung, exogenous and endogenous factors related to the cross talk, the mechanisms of the gut-lung axis and their dysbiosis in lung diseases. Descriptive statistics were analyzed for availability of products sold in retailers overall and by retailer type. In total, 491 retailers were identified (191 food, 300 non-food). Sugary drinks were available at 83% of food retailers and 19% of non-food retailers, while processed foods were available at 61% of food retailers and 16% of non-food retailers. Eighty-five percent of food retailers and 21% of non-food retailers sold sugary drinks and/or processed foods.

In people with CKD, strict monitoring of blood pressure is an important part of therapy. OBJECTIVE The aim of this research was to validate the iHealth Track blood pressure monitoring device for patients with CKD according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol 2010 (ESH-IP2). METHODS In total, 33 patients who received hemodialysis in Plasencia participated in the study. There were 9 successive measurements made, which conformed to the ESH-IP2. We calculated the differences between the standard reference device (Omron M3 Intellisense) and the test device (iHealth Track) for blood pressure and heart rate values. For 99 total comparisons of paired measurements, we classified differences into various categories (≤5 mmHg, ≤10 mmHg, and ≤15 mmHg for blood pressure; ≤3, ≤5, and ≤8 beats per minute for heart rate). The response strategy included early diagnosis, patient isolation, symptomatic monitoring of contacts as well as suspected and confirmed cases, and public health quarantine. In this context, telemedicine, particularly video consultations, has been promoted and scaled up to reduce the risk of transmission, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Based on a literature review, the first conceptual framework for telemedicine implementation during outbreaks was published in 2015. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine if one-way text messages improved attendance to a 14-month follow-up cervical cancer screening among HPV-positive women. METHODS This multicenter, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted at 3 hospitals in Tanzania. Eligible participants were aged between 25 and 60 years, had tested positive to a rapid HPV test during a patient-initiated screening, had been informed of their HPV result, and had a private mobile phone with a valid number. Participants were randomly assigned in a 11 ratio to the intervention or control group through an incorporated algorithm in the text message system. The intervention group received one-way text messages, and the control group received no text messages. The primary outcome was attendance at a 14-month health provider-initiated foln. METHODS In total, 33 patients who received hemodialysis in Plasencia participated in the study. There were 9 successive measurements made, which conformed to the ESH-IP2. We calculated the differences between the standard reference device (Omron M3 Intellisense) and the test device (iHealth Track) for blood pressure and heart rate values. The response strategy included early diagnosis, patient isolation, symptomatic monitoring of contacts as well as suspected and confirmed cases, and public health quarantine. In this context, telemedicine, particularly video consultations, has been promoted and scaled up to reduce the risk of transmission, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Based on a literature review, the first conceptual framework for telemedicine implementation during outbreaks was published in 2015. Most countries, however, lack a regulatory framework to authorize, integrate, and reimburse telemedicine services, including in emergency and outbreak situations. Several challenges remain for the global use and integration of telemedicine into the public health response to COVID-19 and future outbreaks. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine if one-way text messages improved attendance to a 14-month follow-up cervical cancer screening among HPV-positive women. METHODS This multicenter, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted at 3 hospitals in Tanzania. Eligible participants were aged between 25 and 60 years, had tested positive to a rapid HPV test during a patient-initiated screening, had been informed of their HPV result, and had a private mobile phone with a valid number. Participants were randomly assigned in a 11 ratio to the intervention or control group through an incorporated algorithm in the text message system. Based on these results, we are able to hypothesize about the role of the pre-M1 helix in other NMDAR subunits based on sequence and structure homology. These chicken products were raw and required heating in conventional household ovens to inactivate any pathogens that they may have been harbouring. During the course of food safety investigations associated with these outbreaks, many consumers reported using alternative household appliances such as air fryers to cook these products. The effectiveness of these appliances for the inactivation of pathogens in food is not known. Here, we compare the ability of a toaster oven, air fryer, deep fryer, and conventional oven to inactivate a cocktail of S . enterica ser. Enteritidis in frozen breaded chicken strips. Deep frying was the most effective cooking method demonstrating a median log reduction of seven, the conventional oven was next with a median log reduction of six. Both the air fryer and toaster oven performed poorly with respective median log reductions of four and three. Overall, the results of this study suggest the revision of cooking instructions is required for the safe household use of toaster ovens and air fryers.BACKGROUND Demonstration of intrathecal production of Borrelia-specific antibodies (ITAb) is considered the most specific diagnostic marker of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). To assess the utility of CSF CXCL13, we measured its concentration in 132 patients with a broad spectrum of neuroinflammatory disorders, including LNB. METHODS CSF CXCL13 was measured by immunoassay. Spearman's rank correlation test was performed to explore its relationship to conventional markers of neuroinflammation and Borrelia-specific ITAb production. RESULTS In non-LNB neuroinflammatory disorders, CSF CXCL13 elevation correlated with CSF IgG synthesis and leukocyte count. In LNB, CXCL13 concentration was far greater than expected from overall CSF IgG synthesis, and correlated with Borrelia-specific ITAb synthesis. Median CSF CXCL13 concentration in ITAb-positive LNB patients was >500 times greater than in any other group. CONCLUSIONS Intrathecal CXCL13 and IgG production are closely inter-related. CXCL13 is disproportionately increased in "definite LNB," defined as having demonstrable Borrelia-specific ITAb, but not "probable LNB," without ITAb. This disproportionate increase may help identify patients with very early infection, those with active vs. treated LNB, or help differentiate ITAb-defined active LNB from other neuroinflammatory disorders. We identified 20 new randomized controlled trials (RCTs) resulting in inclusion of 35 RCTs comparing CBTp with treatment-as-usual (TAU) or active controls (AC). We analyzed data from participants with psychosis (N = 2407) over 75 conventional meta-analytic comparisons. We completed cumulative meta-analyses (including fail-safe ratios) for key comparisons. Publication bias, heterogeneity, and risk of bias were examined. RESULTS Cumulative meta-analyses demonstrated sufficiency and stability of evidence for hallucinations and delusions. The fail-safe ratio demonstrated that the evidence base was sufficient in 2016 for hallucinations and 2015 for delusions. Ten (5.26%) samples were found positive for β-lactams, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, and 6 (3.16%) samples were confirmed residual for penicillin G (n=6, 3.16%), tetracycline (n=1, 0.53%) and oxytetracycline (n=1, 0.53%) with the maximum concentration of 2.85 μg kg-1, 40.64 μg kg-1, and 12.35 μg kg-1, respectively.   • Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) is a robust and reliable non-invasive alternative imaging modality to invasive coronary angiography, which is the reference standard in evaluating the degree of coronary artery stenosis. CTCA has high negative predictive value and can confidently exclude significant coronary artery disease (***) in low to intermediate risk patients. Over the years, substantial effort has been made to reduce the radiation dose and increase the cost efficiency of CTCA. In this review, we present the evolution of computed tomography scanners in the context of coronary artery imaging as well as its clinical applications and limitations. We also highlight the future directions of CTCA as a one-stop non-invasive imaging modality for anatomic and functional assessment of ***.Introduction During stress echocardiography, the echocardiologist routinely collects both echocardiographic images and stress electrocardiogram (ECG) concurrently. The managing physician faces a dilemma when the stress ECG and stress echocardiography results are discordant; for example, when a patient has negative stress echocardiography but positive stress ECG. We therefore sought to evaluate the prognostic value of stress echocardiography in relation to concordant or discordant stress ECG findings in our local Singapore setting, which has a well-defined Southeast Asian population. Methods This was a retrospective observational study of all patients who underwent stress echocardiography in 2012 at Changi General Hospital, Singapore. All study patients were followed up for 18 months via electronic medical records. Results There was no difference in the major adverse cardiovascular events (****) outcome of patients with normal stress echocardiography and normal stress ECG (reference group) as compared with patients with normal stress echocardiography but positive (discordant) stress ECG (odds ratio 2.02, 95% confidence interval 0.82‒4.98; p = 0.125). Conclusion This study will help to reassure cardiologists that discordant results (negative stress echocardiography but positive stress ECG) do not portend a higher risk of **** when compared to concordant results (i.e. both stress echocardiography and stress ECG are negative).Synapses are involved in the communication of information from one neuron to another. However, a systematic analysis of synapse density in the neocortex from a diversity of species is lacking, limiting what can be understood about the evolution of this fundamental aspect of brain structure. To address this, we quantified synapse density in supragranular layers II-III and infragranular layers V-VI from primary visual cortex and inferior temporal cortex in a sample of 25 species of primates, including humans. We found that synapse densities were relatively constant across these levels of the cortical visual processing hierarchy and did not significantly differ with brain mass, varying by only 1.9-fold across species. We also found that neuron densities decreased in relation to brain enlargement. Consequently, these data show that the number of synapses per neuron significantly rises as a function of brain expansion in these neocortical areas of primates. Humans displayed the highest number of synapses per neuron, but these values were generally within expectations based on brain size.     Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) is a robust and reliable non-invasive alternative imaging modality to invasive coronary angiography, which is the reference standard in evaluating the degree of coronary artery stenosis. CTCA has high negative predictive value and can confidently exclude significant coronary artery disease (CAD) in low to intermediate risk patients. Over the years, substantial effort has been made to reduce the radiation dose and increase the cost efficiency of CTCA. In this review, we present the evolution of computed tomography scanners in the context of coronary artery imaging as well as its clinical applications and limitations. We also highlight the future directions of CTCA as a one-stop non-invasive imaging modality for anatomic and functional assessment of CAD.Introduction During stress echocardiography, the echocardiologist routinely collects both echocardiographic images and stress electrocardiogram (ECG) concurrently. The managing physician faces a dilemma when the stress ECG and stress echocardiography results are discordant; for example, when a patient has negative stress echocardiography but positive stress ECG. We therefore sought to evaluate the prognostic value of stress echocardiography in relation to concordant or discordant stress ECG findings in our local Singapore setting, which has a well-defined Southeast Asian population. Methods This was a retrospective observational study of all patients who underwent stress echocardiography in 2012 at Changi General Hospital, Singapore. All study patients were followed up for 18 months via electronic medical records. Results There was no difference in the major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) outcome of patients with normal stress echocardiography and normal stress ECG (reference group) as compared with patients with normal stress echocardiography but positive (discordant) stress ECG (odds ratio 2.02, 95% confidence interval 0.82‒4.98; p = 0.125). Conclusion This study will help to reassure cardiologists that discordant results (negative stress echocardiography but positive stress ECG) do not portend a higher risk of MACE when compared to concordant results (i.e. both stress echocardiography and stress ECG are negative).Synapses are involved in the communication of information from one neuron to another. However, a systematic analysis of synapse density in the neocortex from a diversity of species is lacking, limiting what can be understood about the evolution of this fundamental aspect of brain structure. To address this, we quantified synapse density in supragranular layers II-III and infragranular layers V-VI from primary visual cortex and inferior temporal cortex in a sample of 25 species of primates, including humans. We found that synapse densities were relatively constant across these levels of the cortical visual processing hierarchy and did not significantly differ with brain mass, varying by only 1.9-fold across species. We also found that neuron densities decreased in relation to brain enlargement. Consequently, these data show that the number of synapses per neuron significantly rises as a function of brain expansion in these neocortical areas of primates. Humans displayed the highest number of synapses per neuron, but these values were generally within expectations based on brain size. They were accompanied by a video displaying a movement that could be congruent or incongruent with the one described in the sentence. Participants were asked to re-execute the movement observed and subsequently they had to perform the task evaluating whether the sentence made sense or not. In the Italian sample a strong effect of concreteness was present, especially in the congruent but also in the incongruent condition. In the Persian sample, instead, there was an inhibition effect of congruent trials, particularly with concrete sentences, and in the incongruent trials no difference in RTs between abstract and concrete sentences was present. From the probabilistic map obtained, a structural connectivity analysis was performed to reveal the cortico-subcortical networks involved in language and motricity interactions.

  • A comprehensive assessment of energy use, environmental degradation, and economic progress can play a significant role in transition towards low-carbon economy, and it can serve as a reference for the green economic development for the rest of the developing world. The objective of this paper is to empirically investigate the current status of conventional and renewable energy use and environmental degradation. Following this, we have analyzed the decoupling relation among environmental degradation, energy use, and economic progress in Pakistan. The study adopted the comprehensive data from year 1972-2017 and applied Tapio decoupling method to explore the decoupling status of environmental degradation, energy use, and economic progress in Pakistan. The key finding from the study shows that the overall value of carbon emissions in Pakistan is relatively increasing with the passage of time and shows about 5.26% average growth rate which is creating severe environmental degradation. There were observed several fluctuations in the trend of carbon emissions which is basically due to the policy changes in the country. From the decoupling point of view, we found the decoupling linkage between energy use and carbon emissions that is growth negative decoupling, whereas a weak decoupling relation has been observed among carbon emissions and economic progress which means that in most of the year's county has achieved more economic growth compared with the carbon emissions. In addition, the similar weak decoupling relationship was found among energy use and economic progress. In the light of these findings, it is suggested to policymakers to promote technological advancement and alternate energy that will not only improve environmental quality, but it will also promote a low-carbon economy.The aim of the present study was to compare the prevalence of dental caries between crack cocaine users and a control group. The study included 106 participants in each group matched for age, sex, and exposure to tobacco. Crack cocaine users were selected from institutions for the treatment of chemical dependency, and the control group was recruited from a public school and among patients who sought dental care. A calibrated examiner determined dental caries experience [Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index]. The severity of tooth decay was determined using the Significant Caries Index (SiC). The prevalence of dental caries (DMFT ≥ 1) was 96.2 and 81.1% among the crack cocaine users and nonusers, respectively. Crack users had higher mean DMFT values (7.16 versus 4.92) for the decayed and missing components as well as a higher percentage of individuals with highly severe caries compared to nonusers. After the adjustments in the multivariate model, the prevalence of caries was 18% higher among the crack users (prevalence ratio 1.18; 95% confidence interval 1.08-1.30). Age, family income, crack cocaine use, and dental calculus were associated with the occurrence of dental caries. In conclusion, the prevalence of caries was higher among the crack users compared with the control group and remained associated with dental caries in the multivariate analysis.PM2.5 concentrations are commonly estimated using geographically weighted regression (GWR) models, but these models may suffer from multi-collinearity and over-focus on local feature problems. To overcome these shortcomings, a self-adaptive bandwidth eigenvector spatial filtering (SA-ESF) model utilizing the golden section search (GO-ESF) and genetic algorithm (GA-ESF) was proposed. The SA-ESF model was applied to estimate ground PM2.5 concentrations in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China both seasonally and annually from December 2015 to November 2016 using remotely sensing data, factory locations, and road networks. The results of the original eigenvector spatial filtering (ESF), GO-ESF, GA-ESF, and GWR models show that the GA-ESF model offers better performance and exhibits a better average adjusted R2 which is 26.6%, 15.3%, and 10.8% higher than for the ESF, GO-ESF, and GWR models, respectively. We next calculated stochastic site indicators that can describe characteristics of regional concentration from interpolated concentration maps derived from the GA-ESF and GWR models. The concentration maps and stochastic site indicators point to major differences in the PM2.5 concentrations in mountainous areas. There are notably high concentrations in those areas using the GWR model, in contrast with the GA-ESF results, indicating that there may be overfitting problems using the GWR model. Overall, the proposed SA-ESF model with the genetic algorithm technique can capture both global and local features and achieve promising results.Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), a typical organochloride pesticide, is one of the persistent organic pollutants. The addition of hydrogen peroxide slightly inhibited the photochemical degradation of β-HCH. Finally, the reaction rate, products and degradation mechanism of β-HCH in snow were compared with those in the ice phase. The photochemical degradation rate of β-HCH in snow was approximately 24 times faster than that in the ice phase. The photolysis product of β-HCH in snow was α-HCH, produced by the isomerization of β-HCH. However, in ice, in addition to α-HCH, pentachlorocyclohexene was produced by dechlorination. The results of this study are helpful in understanding the transformation of organochlorine pesticides in snow and ice, as well as in providing a theoretical basis for snow and ice pollution prevention and control.

The key finding from the study shows that the overall value of carbon emissions in Pakistan is relatively increasing with the passage of time and shows about 5.26% average growth rate which is creating severe environmental degradation. There were observed several fluctuations in the trend of carbon emissions which is basically due to the policy changes in the country. From the decoupling point of view, we found the decoupling linkage between energy use and carbon emissions that is growth negative decoupling, whereas a weak decoupling relation has been observed among carbon emissions and economic progress which means that in most of the year's county has achieved more economic growth compared with the carbon emissions. In addition, the similar weak decoupling relationship was found among energy use and economic progress. In the light of these findings, it is suggested to policymakers to promote technological advancement and alternate energy that will not only improve environmental quality, but it will also promote a low-carbon economy.The aim of the present study was to compare the prevalence of dental caries between crack cocaine users and a control group. The study included 106 participants in each group matched for age, sex, and exposure to tobacco. Crack cocaine users were selected from institutions for the treatment of chemical dependency, and the control group was recruited from a public school and among patients who sought dental care. A calibrated examiner determined dental caries experience [Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index]. The severity of tooth decay was determined using the Significant Caries Index (SiC). The prevalence of dental caries (DMFT ≥ 1) was 96.2 and 81.1% among the crack cocaine users and nonusers, respectively. Crack users had higher mean DMFT values (7.16 versus 4.92) for the decayed and missing components as well as a higher percentage of individuals with highly severe caries compared to nonusers. After the adjustments in the multivariate model, the prevalence of caries was 18% higher among the crack users (prevalence ratio 1.18; 95% confidence interval 1.08-1.30). Age, family income, crack cocaine use, and dental calculus were associated with the occurrence of dental caries. In conclusion, the prevalence of caries was higher among the crack users compared with the control group and remained associated with dental caries in the multivariate analysis.PM2.5 concentrations are commonly estimated using geographically weighted regression (GWR) models, but these models may suffer from multi-collinearity and over-focus on local feature problems. To overcome these shortcomings, a self-adaptive bandwidth eigenvector spatial filtering (SA-ESF) model utilizing the golden section search (GO-ESF) and genetic algorithm (GA-ESF) was proposed. The SA-ESF model was applied to estimate ground PM2.5 concentrations in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China both seasonally and annually from December 2015 to November 2016 using remotely sensing data, factory locations, and road networks. The results of the original eigenvector spatial filtering (ESF), GO-ESF, GA-ESF, and GWR models show that the GA-ESF model offers better performance and exhibits a better average adjusted R2 which is 26.6%, 15.3%, and 10.8% higher than for the ESF, GO-ESF, and GWR models, respectively. We next calculated stochastic site indicators that can describe characteristics of regional concentration from interpolated concentration maps derived from the GA-ESF and GWR models. The concentration maps and stochastic site indicators point to major differences in the PM2.5 concentrations in mountainous areas. There are notably high concentrations in those areas using the GWR model, in contrast with the GA-ESF results, indicating that there may be overfitting problems using the GWR model. The photochemical degradation rate of β-HCH in snow was approximately 24 times faster than that in the ice phase. The photolysis product of β-HCH in snow was α-HCH, produced by the isomerization of β-HCH. However, in ice, in addition to α-HCH, pentachlorocyclohexene was produced by dechlorination. The results of this study are helpful in understanding the transformation of organochlorine pesticides in snow and ice, as well as in providing a theoretical basis for snow and ice pollution prevention and control.

  • BACKGROUND GRIN-related developmental-epileptic encephalopathies are associated with a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders, including intellectual disability, epilepsy including continuous spike-and-wave during sleep syndrome (CSWS), or epilepsy-aphasia spectrum phenotypes such as in Landau-Kleffner syndrome. Efficacy of IVIG treatment was recently reported in a patient with LKS related to GRIN2A mutation. AIM AND METHODS We describe the efficacy of Immunotherapy in 5 consecutive patients (4 males, age range 6 months-13 years) with molecularly confirmed GRIN-related epileptic encephalopathy (4 with GRIN2A- related epilepsy-aphasia spectrum/epileptic encephalopathy with CSWS, accompanied by verbal, communicative and behavioural regression, and one patient with GRIN2D - related infantile developmental-epileptic encephalopathy). All patients had global developmental delay/ intellectual disability in various degrees, and were resistant to anticonvulsants, but none of the patients had frequent clinical seizures. All patients received monthly infusion of IVIG 2 g/ kg for 6 months; 2 patients were also treated with high-dose corticosteroids. RESULTS Normalization or near normalization of the EEG was noted in 3 patients, from whom 2 had mild improvement in verbal abilities and communication skills. Perceptual/spatial abilities, as well as executive functions and attention span, remained significantly impaired. CONCLUSION according to this preliminary, open-label study, Immunotherapy may lead to a clinical and electrographic improvement in patients with GRIN-related developmental-epileptic encephalopathies. Further studies to validate the efficacy of immunotherapy and the potential role of autoimmunity in GRIN-related disorders are needed. METHODS AND RESULTS A comprehensive search of several databases (inception to August 9, 2019, humans and animals, English language only) was designed and conducted by an experienced librarian to identify studies describing the impact of air pollution on the human gut microbiome. The retrieved articles were assessed independently by two reviewers. This process yielded six original research papers on the animal GI gastrointestinal microbiome and four on the human gut microbiome. β-diversity analyses from selected animal studies demonstrated a significantly different composition of the gut microbiota between control and exposed groups but changes in α-diversity were less uniform. No consistent findings in α or β-diversity were reported among the human studies. Changes in microbiota at the phylum level disclosed substantial discrepancies across animal and human studies. CONCLUSIONS A different composition of the gut microbiome, particularly in animal models, is associated with exposure to air pollution. Air pollution is associated with various taxa changes, which however do not follow a clear pattern. Future research using standardized methods are critical to replicate these initial findings and advance this emerging field. Antioxidant activity was also evaluated, and cytotoxic studies were performed on cell cultures. It was shown that the addition of ectoine to the anionic surfactant solutions improves its safety of use. After introducing ectoine to the surfactant solution, a decrease of irritant potential (about 20%) and a decrease in the ability to solubilize of model sebum (about 10-20%) was noted. Addition of ectoine to surfactant solutions also reduced their cytotoxicity by up to 60%.
