  • Iliac artery aneurysms are relatively uncommon, however requiring early diagnosis and treatment because of high mortality once ruptured. Endovascular correction is currently a method of choice. The standard iliac components of aortic stent grafts have a linear or distally widening shape, whereas the anatomy of aneurysms of iliac arteries requires, as a rule, a larger diameter of the proximal zone of shrinkage. Optimal is considered to be the use of reversed stent grafts, i. e. those tapering distally. The authors herein share their experience in treating iliac artery aneurysms using a flared reversed endograft of the iliac branch of the Anaconda stent graft in three patients presenting with iliac artery aneurysms. Technical success was achieved in all cases. In the remote period (6-12 months postoperatively) the grafts were patent, with no leakage.
    This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of three-stage measurement of the transit-time flow through coronary bypass grafts with the help of flowmetry for early verification of technical errors during on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

    We performed an intraoperative analysis of 214 bypass grafts with the help of three-stage flowmetry. The first stage of measuring was performed on-pump with and without the proximal loop test, the second stage of measurement was performed after weaning the patient off the heart-lung machine, and the third stage of measurement was carried out after heparin inactivation prior to chest wound closure.

    Amongst the 214 transplants regarded as functioning, intraoperative flowmetry revealed insufficient blood flow in 9 (4.2%) cases. Technical surgical errors were confirmed in these shunts during revision thereof. In 6 (2.8%) of the 9 such grafts we detected non-optimal parameters of flowmetry during the first measurement (while the heart was stopped); of thestionality of coronary artery bypass grafts at all stages of the operation, thus allowing timely verification and immediate correction of any technical problems with coronary artery bypass grafts.Critical ischaemia of lower limbs is a cause of death and invalidity in the whole world. It was shown that the biomedical cellular product alone and in combination with erythropoietin stimulated angiogenesis. The results of Doppler flowmetry revealed restoration of the parameters of microcirculation in the lower limb by 35-75% of the baseline values. Besides, we observed a decrease of muscle necrosis, connective tissue proliferation, and an increase in the number of the vessels supplying the muscles in the experimental groups. It was also determined that the biomedical cellular product influenced the levels of cytokines in blood serum and crural muscles. Hence, the obtained findings proved the therapeutic potential of the biomedical cellular product in critical ischaemia of lower limbs.This article presents a review of the literature on studying Cilostazol, a type 3 phosphodiesterase inhibitor, also providing the Russian and foreign statistics on the prevalence of peripheral artery disease. It is underlined that the majority of patients with peripheral artery disease have atherosclerotic lesions in the coronary and cerebral vascular basins. Cilostazol deservedly occupies the first lines in the sections of pharmacotherapy for intermittent claudication in international and Russian consensus documents on peripheral artery disease. The drug has an extensive evidence base for the following pharmacological effects vasodilating, antiplatelet, endothelial protective, and vasculogenic. Clinical efficacy of Cilostazol was confirmed in 15 randomized clinical trials (3 718 patients with intermittent claudication) studying the use of Cilostazol taken twice daily at doses of 50 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg as compared with placebo or versus pentoxifylline given in a dose of 400 mg three times daily, with a demmparative efficacy of Cilostazol and pentoxifylline in patients with intermittent claudication.The routine practice of a vascular surgeon is invariably associated with decreasing the risk of adverse cardiovascular events in patients presenting with either arterial or venous pathology. Antithrombotic therapy is one of the key approaches used to achieve this purpose. However, a wide variety of modern drugs inhibiting platelet aggregation and agents blocking the coagulation cascade, as well as their combinations makes the selection of the most appropriate treatment for a particular patient quite a difficult task. The choice should carefully be made taking into consideration the nosology, aetiology, accompanying diseases and therapy thereof, as well as the balance of the risk of ischaemic and haemorrhagic complications. Therefore, availability of modern antithrombotic drugs favourably contributing to a more personified approach to treatment is of utmost importance. Thus, for example, rivaroxaban, an anticoagulant belonging to the class of direct-acting oral factor Xa inhibitors, provides a possibility to select an optimal dosage and regimen for a particular patient with arterial or vascular pathology in practice of a cardiovascular surgeon.

  • We developed a faculty development workshop specifically for teaching endoscopy to gastroenterology trainees that is widely generalizable to other programs. Overall, we found a high level of satisfaction amongst the participants who have completed it. The tools we created can be easily tailored to complement any existing faculty development session and extrapolated to similar procedural disciplines.
    We developed a faculty development workshop specifically for teaching endoscopy to gastroenterology trainees that is widely generalizable to other programs. Overall, we found a high level of satisfaction amongst the participants who have completed it. The tools we created can be easily tailored to complement any existing faculty development session and extrapolated to similar procedural disciplines.Pathology training programs throughout the United States have endured unprecedented challenges dealing with the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. At Houston Methodist Hospital, the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine planned and executed a trainee-oriented, stepwise emergency response. The focus was on optimizing workflows among areas of both clinical and anatomic pathology, maintaining an excellent educational experience, and minimizing trainee exposure to coronavirus disease 2019. During the first phase of the response, trainees were divided into 2 groups one working on-site and the other working remotely. With the progression of the pandemic, all trainees were called **** on-site and further redeployed within our department to meet the significantly increased workload demands of our clinical laboratory services. Adjustments to trainee educational activities included, among others, the organization of a daily coronavirus disease 2019 virtual seminar series. This series served to facilitate communication between faculty, laboratory managers, and trainees. Moreover, it became a forum for trainees to provide updates on individual service workflows and volumes, ongoing projects and research, as well as literature reviews on coronavirus disease 2019-related topics. From our program's experience, redeploying pathology trainees within our department during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic resulted in optimization of patient care while ensuring trainee safety, and importantly, helped to maintain continuous high-quality education through active involvement in unique learning opportunities.The following fictional case is intended as a learning tool within the Pathology Competencies for Medical Education (PCME), a set of national standards for teaching pathology. These are divided into three basic competencies Disease Mechanisms and Processes, Organ System Pathology, and Diagnostic Medicine and Therapeutic Pathology. Influence of Aβ on albumin endocytosis was studied using FITC-labelled albumin. LEC did not modify Aβ effects with or without albumin on neuronal morphology, but increased cell viability. LEC increased ROS generation with and without Aβ in the same magnitude. Diminished Aβ internalization observed with albumin was not affected by LEC. In presence of Aβ albumin is internalized, but endosomes did not deliver their cargo to the lysosomes for degradation. It is concluded that formation of Aβ-albumin complex does not require of albumin internalization, thus is extracellular. Aβ affects albumin endocytosis preventing late endosomes and lysosomes degradation, probably caused by changes in albumin structure or deregulation in vesicular transport. Considering the consequences such as its osmotic effects, the inability to exert its antioxidant properties, its effects on neuronal plasticity and excitability albumin affected endocytosis induced by Aβ is proposed as a new physiopathology mechanism in AD. It is hypothesized that there is critical intraneuronal level above which albumin becomes toxic.Based on advances in cerebellum research as to its cognitive, social, and language contributions to working memory, the purpose of this article is to describe new support for the prominent involvement of cerebellar internal models in the adaptive selection of language. Within this context it has been proposed that (1) cerebellar internal models of inner speech during stone-tool making accelerated the adaptive evolution of new cause-and-effect sequences of precision stone-tool knapping requirements, and (2) that these evolving cerebellar internal models coded (i.e., learned in corticonuclear microcomplexes) such cause-and-effect sequences as phonological counterparts and, these, when sent to the cerebral cortex, became new phonological working memory. This article describes newer supportive research findings on (1) the cerebellum's role in silent speech in working memory, and (2) recent findings on genetic aspects (FOXP2) of the role of silent speech in language evolution. It is concluded that within overall cerebro-cerebellar evolution, without the evolution of cerebellar coding of stone-tool making sequences of primitive working memory (beginning approximately 1.7 million years ago) language would not have evolved in the subsequent evolution of Homo sapiens.

    A core symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder is persistent fear memory, which can be defined as fear memory that is resistant to updating, inhibition, or extinction. posttraumatic stress disorder emerges after traumatic stress exposure, but neurobiological mechanisms via which traumatic stress leads to persistent fear memory are not well defined. Akt signaling within the amygdala (Amy) is enhanced with traumatic stress, and phosphatidylinositol kinase 3 (PI3K) activation of Akt within the basolateral Amy (BLA) has been implicated as critical to fear memory formation. These findings raise the possibility that traumatic stress enhances PI3K→Akt signaling in the BLA, which leads to persistent fear memory.

    To test this hypothesis, rats were exposed to traumatic stress using the single prolonged stress model, and changes in Akt phosphorylation were assayed in the Amy at 0 and 30 minutes after fear conditioning (FC). In a separate experiment, we inhibited PI3K→Akt signaling in the BLA prior to FC and observed the effect this had on acquisition, expression, and extinction of FC in stressed and control rats.

    Enhanced Akt phosphorylation in the Amy at both time points was observed in stressed rats, but not in control rats. PI3K→Akt inhibition in the BLA had no effect on freezing in control rats but decreased freezing during extinction training and testing in stressed rats.

    These findings suggest that PI3K→Akt signaling in the BLA could be a mechanism via which traumatic stress leads to fear memory that is resistant to extinction.

Eligibility criteria included ERBB2-negative metastatic breast cancer, ability to receive taxane therapy, good performance status, normal organ function, no previous immunotherapy use, and no autoimmune disease. The study was discontinued in June 2017 because of lack of efficacy. Data analysis was performed from February 2019 to April 2020.

    A taxane (paclitaxel [80 mg/m2] weekly 3 weeks on, 1 week off, or docetaxel [75 mg/m2] every 3 weeks) plus placebo or indoximod (1200 mg) orally twionths) and overall survival (19.5 vs 20.6 months) were not statistically significant. The tumor was removed by endoscopic submucosal dissection 5 years after the first biopsy, which had already shown a feature of oxyntic gland neoplasm. During the follow-up period, the endoscopy revealed little change in the tumor appearance. However, the histology of endoscopic submucosal dissection showed submucosal extension with its histological progression. Besides, other oxyntic gland neoplasms of the stomach were observed metachronously or synchronously, giving an implication about a common pathogenetic basis of these lesions.Despite wide application of sodium nitrite (SN) as food additive, it exhibits considerable side effects on various body organs at high dose or chronic exposure. Bayesian inference phylogenetic and median-joining haplotype network analyses indicated no obvious geographical distribution pattern among haplotypes. Hierarchical AMOVA and SAMOVA revealed no genetically distinct groups and lack of obvious phylogeographic structure. Isolation by distance (IBD) analysis results demonstrated no correlation between genetic differentiation and geographic distance. We have used genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to identify genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to infer the geographic structure and migration patterns. In the present study, we show that the population structure in present-day populations is different from that described in previous studies, which suggest that they have evolved recently possibly as a response to human-induced changes in agriculture. This study shows that S. avenae in England is predominantly parthenogenetic and there has been a demographic and spatial expansion of a single genetic cluster, which could correspond with the insecticide resistance superclone identified in previous studies. Conversely, in China, S. miscanthi populations are mostly cyclical parthenogenetic, with one sexual stage in autumn to produce overwintering eggs, and there are six genetically differentiated subpopulations and high genetic differentiation between geographic locations, which suggests that further taxonomical research is needed. Unlike S. avenae in England, there is no evidence for insecticide resistance and there is no predominance of a single lineage in S. miscanthi in China.Mean annual temperature (MAT) is an influential climate factor affecting the bioavailability of growth-limiting nutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). In tropical montane wet forests, warmer MAT drives higher N bioavailability, while patterns of P availability are inconsistent across MAT. Two important nutrient acquisition strategies, fine root proliferation into bulk soil and root association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, are dependent on C availability to the plant via primary production. The case study presented here tests whether variation in bulk soil N bioavailability across a tropical montane wet forest elevation gradient (5.2°C MAT range) influences (a) morphology fine root proliferation into soil patches with elevated N, P, and N+P relative to background soil and (b) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization of fine roots in patches. We created a fully factorial fertilized root ingrowth core design (N, P, N+P, unfertilized control) representing soil patches with elevated N and P bioavailability relative to background bulk soil. Our results show that percent AMF colonization of roots increased with MAT (r2 = .19, p = .004), but did not respond to fertilization treatments. Fine root length (FRL), a proxy for root foraging, increased with MAT in N+P-fertilized patches only (p = .02), while other fine root morphological parameters did not respond to the gradient or fertilized patches. We conclude that in N-rich, fine root elongation into areas with elevated N and P declines while AMF abundance increases with MAT. These results indicate a tradeoff between P acquisition strategies occurring with changing N bioavailability, which may be influenced by higher C availability with warmer MAT.Acoustic communication of American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) is relatively understudied. Our overall aim was to determine the acoustic structure of wild American Crocodile distress calls, distinguish call differences among size classes (hatchling, juvenile, sub-adult, and adult), and investigate call production on a gradient of human disturbance. American Crocodile distress calls have strong frequency modulation and are comprised of multiple harmonics in a downsweeping pattern. Measured parameters (total duration, first quartile duration, maximal frequency, first quartile frequency, end frequency, slope of first quartile, slope of last quartiles) differed significantly among size classes (p less then .05). Hatchling distress calls are higher in frequency and strongly modulated, whereas calls produced by sub-adults and adults showed little modulation, are lower in frequency, and have greater overall duration. Proportion of crocodiles that produced distress calls during capture differed by size class and sampling location, particularly adult distress calls which are reported here to be produced with undocumented frequency. We determined that American Crocodiles of all size classes produce distress calls at varying rates among study sites. Our results demonstrate that American crocodiles produce distress call more frequently at sites with higher anthropogenic activity. Measured call parameters of juveniles and hatchling American crocodiles also varied among sites in relation to human disturbance. Calls recorded at sites of high anthropogenic impact have increased duration and less modulation which may adversely affect response to emitted distress calls. Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, this turtle is heavily harvested and exported for food and traditional medicine in China and for the pet trade primarily in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Despite its significance in global markets, relatively little is known about the species' ecology or importance to ecosystems. We conducted our research in a national park in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and our objectives were to quantify trophic breadth, capacity for seed dispersal between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and whether ingestion of seeds by C. amboinensis enhances germination. We obtained diet samples from 200 individual turtles and found that the species is omnivorous, exhibiting an ontogenetic shift from more carnivorous to more omnivorous. Both subadults and adults scavenged on other vertebrates. In a seed passage experiment, turtles passed seeds for 2‒9 days after ingestion. Radio-tracked turtles moved, on average, about 35 m per day, indicating that seeds from ingested fruits, given seed passage durations, could be dispersed 70‒313 m from the parent tree and potentially between wetland and upland ecosystems.

This study shows that S. avenae in England is predominantly parthenogenetic and there has been a demographic and spatial expansion of a single genetic cluster, which could correspond with the insecticide resistance superclone identified in previous studies. Conversely, in China, S. miscanthi populations are mostly cyclical parthenogenetic, with one sexual stage in autumn to produce overwintering eggs, and there are six genetically differentiated subpopulations and high genetic differentiation between geographic locations, which suggests that further taxonomical research is needed. Two important nutrient acquisition strategies, fine root proliferation into bulk soil and root association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, are dependent on C availability to the plant via primary production. The case study presented here tests whether variation in bulk soil N bioavailability across a tropical montane wet forest elevation gradient (5.2°C MAT range) influences (a) morphology fine root proliferation into soil patches with elevated N, P, and N+P relative to background soil and (b) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization of fine roots in patches. We created a fully factorial fertilized root ingrowth core design (N, P, N+P, unfertilized control) representing soil patches with elevated N and P bioavailability relative to background bulk soil. Our results show that percent AMF colonization of roots increased with MAT (r2 = .19, p = .004), but did not respond to fertilization treatments. Fine root length (FRL), a proxy for root foraging, increased with MAT in N+P-fertilized patches only (p = .02), while other fine root morphological parameters did not respond to the gradient or fertilized patches. We conclude that in N-rich, fine root elongation into areas with elevated N and P declines while AMF abundance increases with MAT. These results indicate a tradeoff between P acquisition strategies occurring with changing N bioavailability, which may be influenced by higher C availability with warmer MAT.Acoustic communication of American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) is relatively understudied. Our overall aim was to determine the acoustic structure of wild American Crocodile distress calls, distinguish call differences among size classes (hatchling, juvenile, sub-adult, and adult), and investigate call production on a gradient of human disturbance. American Crocodile distress calls have strong frequency modulation and are comprised of multiple harmonics in a downsweeping pattern. Measured parameters (total duration, first quartile duration, maximal frequency, first quartile frequency, end frequency, slope of first quartile, slope of last quartiles) differed significantly among size classes (p less then .05). Hatchling distress calls are higher in frequency and strongly modulated, whereas calls produced by sub-adults and adults showed little modulation, are lower in frequency, and have greater overall duration. Proportion of crocodiles that produced distress calls during capture differed by size class and sampling location, particularly adult distress calls which are reported here to be produced with undocumented frequency. We determined that American Crocodiles of all size classes produce distress calls at varying rates among study sites. Our results demonstrate that American crocodiles produce distress call more frequently at sites with higher anthropogenic activity. Measured call parameters of juveniles and hatchling American crocodiles also varied among sites in relation to human disturbance. Calls recorded at sites of high anthropogenic impact have increased duration and less modulation which may adversely affect response to emitted distress calls. Proportional and call parameter variances suggest anthropogenic activity as a driver for increased call production and alteration of call parameters at high human-impacted sites.The Southeast Asian box turtle (Cuora amboinensis) is numerically the most important turtle exported from Indonesia. Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, this turtle is heavily harvested and exported for food and traditional medicine in China and for the pet trade primarily in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Despite its significance in global markets, relatively little is known about the species' ecology or importance to ecosystems. We conducted our research in a national park in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and our objectives were to quantify trophic breadth, capacity for seed dispersal between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and whether ingestion of seeds by C. amboinensis enhances germination. We obtained diet samples from 200 individual turtles and found that the species is omnivorous, exhibiting an ontogenetic shift from more carnivorous to more omnivorous. Both subadults and adults scavenged on other vertebrates. In a seed passage experiment, turtles passed seeds for 2‒9 days after ingestion. Radio-tracked turtles moved, on average, about 35 m per day, indicating that seeds from ingested fruits, given seed passage durations, could be dispersed 70‒313 m from the parent tree and potentially between wetland and upland ecosystems.

Data regarding demographics, comorbidities, risk factors, and clinical outcomes were recorded within adult patients with C. albicans BSI. Both CAI genotyping and MLST yielded comparable discriminatory power for C. albicans characterization. Besides, the distribution of CAI repetition showed a satisfactory phylogenetic association, which could be a good alternative method in the molecular phylogenetics of C. albicans and epidemiological studies. The database was designed to collect data from SLE patients that first-hospitalized during 1999-2009 in Jiangsu province, China, and a follow-up for survival status was performed in 2010 and 2015. Cox and restricted cubic spline models were used to estimate the hazard ratio and 95% CI.

    We identified 221 deaths among 2446 SLE patients in total. Compared with non-users, decreased overall mortality was associated with either HCQ or CQ users, with adjusted hazard ratio (95% CI) of 0.49 (0.35, 0.67) and 0.49 (0.27, 0.87), respectively. The association between HCQ/CQ and overall mortality was similar across subgroups, such as patients with comorbidities and organ involvements. Interestingly, both the time and the daily dosage of HCQ/CQ use were related to decreased mortality of SLE in a linear dose-response relationship. In cause specific analyses, HCQ/CQ was inversely associated with death from renal insufficiency and other organ (cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal and haematological) involvements, with adjusted hazard ratio (95% CI) of 0.23 (0.09, 0.55) and 0.25 (0.10, 0.62), respectively, yet it was not significantly associated with mortality from infection and neuropsychiatric involvements.

    A prospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted in controlled acromegaly patients followed at a tertial referral center, with 3 study visits at baseline and after a median of 2.6 and 9.1 years.

    We included 31 patients with biochemically controlled acromegaly for 2 or more years (49% female; median age, 60 years) at baseline.

    Radiographic arthropathy of the knee, hip, hand, and cervical and lumbar spine were evaluated using Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) scores, developed for assessment of primary osteoarthritis (OA). Radiographic progression was defined as a KL increase above the smallest detectable change. Joint symptoms were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Progression was defined using existing clinically important cutoff values. Risk factors for progression were investigated using a multivariable model.

  • The co-association of benzodiazepines and opioids is associated with an increased risk of overdose, death, and poorer psychosocial prognosis. The aim of this study is to characterize the prevalence, pattern of use, and primary clinical outcomes in benzodiazepines users in a public opioid maintenance treatment unit.

    We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 236 patients treated with opioid substitutes (methadone and buprenorphine). We conducted a descriptive, bivariable, and multivariable analysis to determine clinical differences between benzodiazepines users and non-users.

    The prevalence of consumption of benzodiazepines was 25.4% (60). The benzodiazepines were obtained with a medical prescription (49.8%) or on the black market (42.6%). The most prescribed benzodiazepine was diazepam (29.1%), and the main reasons were to relieve insomnia (27.7%) or anxiety (26.9%) and to enhance the psychoactive effects of other drugs (19.7%). Regarding the clinical outcomes, we highlight a very high prevalence ofand psychiatric outcomes. A multidisciplinary approach with a focus on infectious diseases and mental health is critical in order to enhance the treatment effectiveness and overall prognosis.
    Medical devices are healthcare technologies with a significantly growing market worldwide. This study aims to analyze medical device alerts issued by the Portuguese Medicines Agency, INFARMED, I.P. during 2017, as well as to identify the respective regulatory actions and to suggest additional recommendations.

    All alerts on medical device alerts publicly available in the website of INFARMED, I.P. were identified and analyzed, including actions taken. Additionally, reports on medical devices from the Portuguese national competent authorities were compared with reports from other European Union member states such as Germany.

    A total of 32 safety alerts were identified 18 (56%) related with devices without identified records of commercialization in Portugal, six (19%) related with devices voluntarily withdrawn from the market, such as counterfeit products, and eight (25%) categorized as 'other'. In both Portugal and Germany, 0.28 and 4.53 reports of national competent authorities per million inhabitants werlity medical devices, by issuing safety alerts, recommendations and mandatory market withdrawals for unsuitable or unsafe medical devices.

    A time series analysis was performed using the weekly incidence rate of COVID-19 in Mainland Portugal, between weeks 14/2020 (March 30 to April 5) and 25/2020 (June 15 to 21), and six indicators 1) COVID-19 consultations in primary healthcare; 2) number of COVID-19 emergency department visits; 3) number of emergency department visits due to viral pneumonia; 4) number of hospitalizations due to viral pneumonia; 5) proportion of emergency department visits due to viral pneumonia; and 6) proportion of hospitalizations for viral pneumonia. Pearson correlation and cross-correlations were computed.

Recently, it has been increasingly recognized that aberrant inflammasome activation is critically involved endothelial dysfunction in a variety of human diseases, such as atherosclerosis, acute lung injury (ALI), and type 2 diabetes. The molecular mechanisms underlying endothelial inflammasome activation, however, are not completely elucidated. In the present study, we identified orphan nuclear receptor Nur77 as a novel regulator in controlling inflammasome activation in vascular endothelial cells (ECs). We demonstrated that LPS-induced inflammasome activation was significantly inhibited by ectopic overexpression of Nur77, predominantly through transcriptionally suppression of caspase-1 expression in vascular ECs. Consistent with this observation, we found that LPS-induced inflammasome activation was significantly augmented in lung ECs isolated from Nur77 knockout (KO) ****. Mechanistically, we showed that Nur77-induced inhibition of caspase-1 expression was due to an inhibition of Interferon Regulatory Factor 1 (IRF1) expression and its subsequent binding to the caspase-1 promoter. Mechanistically, we showed that Nur77-induced inhibition of caspase-1 expression was due to an inhibition of Interferon Regulatory Factor 1 (IRF1) expression and its subsequent binding to the caspase-1 promoter. Of the 139 participants recruited, 114 commenced the survey with 65 participants under 8 years (58%) and 49 between 8 and 12 years. Results showed participants recognised different ways to keep safe with children under 8 years (N = 65) 100% cognisant of the need to check with 'Mum/Dad' or teachers if they could safely eat food as well as the importance of not swapping lunches, while there was a slight change in compliance for those aged 8-12 years as three (6.1%, n = 3/49) children did not see the necessity of asking an adult/teacher if a food item was safe to eat. Older children were also less likely to tell friends about their food allergy even if they thought they were having an allergic reaction, despite children under 8 years more likely to feel different to friends (38%, n = 24/64) compared to those aged 8-12 years (31%, n = 14/45). Although both groups disliked parents' fussing, for children under 8 years, there was a strong association between this and 'feeling different to friends'.   • A monolithic photonic chip with multifunctional light emission/detection and electro-optic modulation capabilities in the near-infrared range is proposed and realized on an InP-based wafer. Two identical AlInGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) diodes operating independently as light emission/detection devices are fabricated using a two-step etching process on a single wafer and connected via a straight waveguide. The photocurrent induced in the MQW diode for the detection process is generated by the infrared light emitted by the MQW diode during the emission process and transmitted via the straight waveguide. The MQW diode has an electro-optic modulation characteristic, and its spectral responsivity exhibits a blueshift with an increasingly negative bias voltage under external infrared laser excitation. An on-chip communication test is conducted to study the potential applications of the proposed monolithic photonic chip for transmission of optical signals in the near-infrared range.The β-amyloid (Aβ) protein aggregation into toxic forms is one of the major factors in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Screening compound libraries as inhibitors of Aβ-aggregation is a common strategy to discover novel molecules as potential therapeutics in AD. In this regard, thioflavin T (ThT)-based fluorescence spectroscopy is a widely used in vitro method to identify inhibitors of Aβ aggregation. However, conventional data processing of the ThT assay experimental results generally provides only qualitative output and lacks inhibitor-specific quantitative data, which can offer a number of advantages such as identification of critical inhibitor-specific parameters required to design superior inhibitors and reduce the need to conduct extensive in vitro kinetic studies. Therefore, we carried out mathematical modeling based on logistic equation and power law (PL) model to correlate the experimental results obtained from the ThT-based Aβ40 aggregation kinetics for small-molecule inhibitors curcumin, orange G, and resveratrol and quantitatively fit the data in a logistic equation. Depending on the frequency of the oscillating external magnetic field, membrane properties may be tuned.A thorough assessment of the phylogenetic diversity and community structure of halophilic archaea from three halite-crystal salts, processed from two separated saline systems of Southern Tunisia has been performed using culture dependent and independent methods targeting different regions of 16S rRNA gene sequences including DGGE, 16S rRNA clone libraries and Illumina Miseq sequencing. Two samples, CDR (red halite-crystal salts) and CDW (white halite-crystal salts), were collected from Chott-Eljerid and one sample CDZ (white halite-crystal salts) from Chott Douz. Fourteen isolates were identified as Halorubrum, Haloferax, Haloarcula, and Halogeometricum genera members. Culture-independent approach revealed a high diversity of archaeal members present in all samples, represented by the Euryarchaeal phylum and the dominance of the Halobacteria class. Nanohaloarchaea were also identified only in white halite samples based on metagenomic analysis. In fact, a total of 61 genera were identified with members of the Halorhabdus, Halonotius, Halorubrum, Haloarcula, and unclassified. Halobacteriaceae were shared among all samples. Unexpected diversity profiles between samples was observed where the red halite crust sample was considered as the most diverse one. The highest diversity was observed with Miseq approach, nevertheless, some genera were detected only with 16S rRNA clone libraries and cultured approaches.Macrophages comprise a phenotypically and functionally diverse group of hematopoietic cells. To perform tissue stress surveillance, macrophages express many different stress-sensing receptors, including purinergic P2X and P2Y receptors that respond to extracellular nucleotides and their sugar derivatives. Activation of G protein-coupled P2Y receptors can be both pro- and anti-inflammatory. Current examples include the observation that P2Y14 receptor promotes STAT1-mediated inflammation in pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages as well as the demonstration that P2Y11 receptor suppresses the secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and concomitantly promotes the release of soluble TNF receptors from anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages. Here, we review macrophage regulation by P2Y purinergic receptors, both in physiological and disease-associated inflammation. Therapeutic targeting of anti-inflammatory P2Y receptor signaling is desirable to attenuate excessive inflammation in infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Conversely, anti-inflammatory P2Y receptor signaling must be suppressed during cancer therapy to preserve its efficacy.The lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to various sudden changes in a large number of individuals. In response, the question of how individuals from different social and economic strata cope with those changes has arisen, as well as how **** they have affected their mental well-being. Choosing strategies that cope with both the pandemic and the well-being of the population has also been a challenge for different governments. While a large number of studies have investigated the mental health of people from different populations during the COVID-19 pandemic, few have explored the number and type of changes experienced during lockdown by the general population, alongside their relationships with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). To fill this research gap, an observational cross-sectional study on those associations was conducted in the French-speaking part of the Swiss general population. Data were collected from 431 participants during the first four weeks of lockdown due to COVID-19. Multivarich supports the efficiency of governmental communication regarding the pandemic. Our results support that government measures should be accompanied by effective and targeted communication about the risk of infection, in order to encourage all strata of the general population to follow such measures and adapt to the changes without unduly affecting their mental health. The usage of such tools might help to reduce the impact of policy-imposed changes on the mental HRQoL of the general population, by inducing voluntary changes in informed and engaged populations.We aimed at showing how Global Positioning System (GPS) along with a previously validated speed processing methodology could be used to measure outdoor walking capacities in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). We also deal with methodological issues that may occur when conducting such measurements, and explore to what extent GPS-measured outdoor walking capacities (maximal walking distance [MWDGPS] and usual walking speed) could be related to traditional functional outcomes (6-min total walking distance) in people with MS. Eighteen people with MS, with an Expanded Disability Status Scale score ≤6, completed a 6-min walking test and an outdoor walking session (60 min maximum) at usual pace during which participants were wearing a DG100 GPS receiver and could perform several walking bouts.   • The results consistently revealed coping flexibility to be inversely associated with depression and all four types of COVID-19 anxiety. More importantly, there was a significant interaction between perceived likelihood of COVID-19 infection and coping flexibility on COVID-19 anxiety over personal health. The purpose of the present study, to our knowledge the first to be conducted on this topic in the French-speaking context and to include inpatients, was to describe the content of JCPs and how they are perceived by patients and the providers. Methods The study used an exploratory, mixed, sequential method. Existing JCPs were retrospectively collected in several clinical contexts (hospital, community settings, and sheltered accommodation). Based on their analyses, we conducted semi-structured interviews including some rating scales on the perception of the JCPs among patients and providers in these settings. For the qualitative analyses, content analyses were conducted with a hybrid approach using NVivo 12 software. Data were double-coded and discussed with a third researcher until agrethe promotion of the wide use of JCPs with patients who have experienced crises. It is important to continue to research JCPs through impact studies that include family members.We aimed to investigate the relationship between mental health problems and unhealthy behaviors among healthcare workers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using an online survey, we collected data on healthcare workers' perception regarding COVID-19 exposure in a work unit. Workers' depression, insomnia, and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Insomnia Severity Index, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, respectively. Work-related stress and anxiety in response to the viral epidemic were measured using the Stress and Anxiety to Viral Epidemic-9 (SAVE-9) scale. We found that work-related stress and anxiety in response to the viral epidemic was associated with female sex, perception of the workplace as being dangerous, and depressive symptoms. Unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking and drinking as coping behaviors during the pandemic, were associated with male sex, young age, depression, and insomnia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to closely observe the patterns of work-related stress and anxiety reactions among healthcare workers to reduce their burnout.Reduced social functioning in depression has been explained by different factors. Reduced social connectedness and prosocial motivation may contribute to interpersonal difficulties, particularly in chronic depression. In the present study, we tested whether social connectedness and prosocial motivation are reduced in chronic depression. Forty-seven patients with persistent depression and 49 healthy controls matched for age and gender completed the Inclusion of the Other in the Self Scale (IOS), the Compassionate Love Scale (CLS), the **** Depression Inventory-II, and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. A Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with IOS and CLS as dependent variables revealed a highly significant difference between both groups. Methods This is a cross sectional study, using a self-administered questionnaire (Cronbach's alpha = 0.742). A convenience sampling strategy was used to recruit participants who were school/college-attending adolescents, aged 11-19. A minimum sample size of 199 was required (95% confidence interval, 5% margin of error, and 15.3% population proportion). The study was conducted between February and April 2016 in Greater London. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including chi square, Spearman correlation, and binary logistic regression were used to identify the key findings. Data analysis was performed using SPSS v21.
