The combination of arginine and ibuprofen is widely used for pain relief with a faster onset of action than conventional ibuprofen. Therefore, the determination of both compounds in a single run is highly desirable for rapid quality control applications. This paper reports an ultra-fast method (100 injections/h) for simultaneous determination of arginine and ibuprofen using capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection. The separation of arginine as cation and ibuprofen as anion was achieved using a background electrolyte composed by an equimolar mixture of 10 mmol/L of 2-(cyclohexylamino) ethanesulfonic acid and boric acid with pH adjusted to 8.4 using potassium hydroxide. The limits of detections were 5.3 and 10.0 μmol/L for arginine and ibuprofen, respectively. The proposed method is simple, fast (one analysis every 35 s), environmentally friendly (minimal waste generation) and accurate (recovery values between 95 and 98%).A potential solution to the deceased donor organ shortage is to expand donor acceptability criteria. The procurement cost implications of using nonstandard donors is unknown. Using 5 years of US organ procurement organization (OPO) data, we built a cost function model to make cost projections the total cost was the dependent variable; production outputs, including the number of donors and organs procured, were the independent variables. Patients with acne vulgaris continue to present increasingly in dermatology outpatient clinics and seek treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. As far as we know, the effect of isotretinoin on COVID-19has not been studied before.
We aimed to evaluate whether patients receiving oral isotretinoin are at increased risk of COVID-19 infection by comparing them with patients on topical treatment for acne vulgaris.
The data were collected retrospectively from a cohort of 267 acne vulgaris patients, who were under follow-up for acne vulgaris treatment during the pandemic period.
Total of 227 patients (141 receiving isotretinoin treatment and 86 receiving topical treatment) were included of whom 29 patients had COVID-19 infection during acne vulgaris treatment. Fifteen (10.6%) patients were receiving oral isotretinoin and 14 (16.3%) were receiving topical acne treatment at the time of COVID-19 infection. The mean cumulative dose was 2340±1988mg at the time of COVID-19 infection. The mean elapsed time between the onset of isotretinoin treatment and positive PCR result for COVID-19 was 13.3±10.3weeks. Nine patients (64.3%) receiving isotretinoin treatment and 9 patients (60%) under topical treatment had loss of taste and smell during COVID-19 infection. Isotretinoin treatment was not found to be associated with a significant increased risk of getting COVID-19 (odds ratio, 0.671; 95% confidence interval, 0.247-1.823; P=0.434).
As a conclusion, the results of this study encourage dermatologists and acne vulgaris patients to initiate oral isotretinoin treatment safely during the pandemic period.

This paper discusses the main aspects of the oral processing of solid foods across different categories (1) oral physiology related to chewing, (2) in-mouth food transformation, (3) texture perception, and (4) taste perception, and emphasis is placed on unveiling the underlying mechanisms of how food structure influences the oral processing of solid foods; this is exemplified by comparing the chewing behaviors for a number of representative solid foods. It highlights that modification of the texture/taste of food based on food structure design opens up the possibility for the development of food products that can be applied in the management of health.
Neurophysiological manifestations selectively associated with amyloid beta and tau depositions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are useful network biomarkers to identify peptide specific pathological processes. The objective of this study was to validate the associations between reduced neuronal synchrony within alpha oscillations and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) density in autopsy examination, in patients with AD.
In a well-characterized clinicopathological cohort of AD patients (n=13), we quantified neuronal synchrony within alpha (8-12Hz) and delta-theta (2-8Hz) oscillations, using magnetoencephalography during the disease course, within six selected neocortical and hippocampal regions, including angular gyrus, superior temporal gurus, middle frontal gyrus, primary motor cortex, CA1, and subiculum, and correlated these with regional NFT density quantified at histopathological examination.
Abnormal synchrony in alpha, but not in delta-theta, significantly predicted the NFT density at post mortem neuropathological examination.

Fresh produces spoilage is a worldwide concern that accompany the global increase in food demand. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/opicapone.html Adverse human health and environmental effects of commercial spoilage control agents are major public concern. In this study, Prosopis juliflora leaves and fruit extracts had their antimicrobial activities evaluated against the growth of selected bacteria and yeast, and against mycelial growth and conidial germination of selected mycotoxins-producing fungi. P. juliflora water-soluble leaf ethanolic (PJ-WS-LE) extract with its novel extraction method showed the strongest antibacterial activity. Antimicrobial tests showed total inhibition of Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria alternata, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans with **** ranging between 0.125 and 1 mg/ml. Percent inhibition of mycelial growth (PIMG) of the extract was also determined against seven other fungal strains with highest value against Geotrichum candidum (66.2%). Even the least affected fungal strain showed alterations in their hyphae and spores exposed to PJ-WS-LE extract when observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM), alterations include exfoliated flakes, pores, vacuolation and applanation. Small-scale fruit bioassays controlled experiment showed high efficacy of the extract in protecting inoculated cherry tomato samples from B. cinerea and A. alternata infections. In conclusion, PJ-WS-LE extract is a feasible, natural antifungal agent that can replace common anti-spoiling chemicals.In this work, we utilized a parameterization model of ektacytometry to quantify the bulk rigidity of the rigid red blood cell (RBC) population in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Current ektacytometry techniques implement laser diffraction viscometry to estimate the RBC deformability in a whole blood sample. However, the diffraction measurement is an average of all cells present in the measured sample. By coupling an existing parameterization model of ektacytometry to an artificially rigid RBC model, we formulated an innovative system for estimating the average rigidity of the rigid RBC population in SCD blood. We demonstrated that this method could more accurately determine the bulk stiffness of the rigid RBC populations. This information could potentially help develop the ektacytometry technique as a tool for assessing disease severity in SCD patients, offering novel insights into the disease pathology and treatment.Metabarcoding has the potential to revolutionise insect surveillance by providing high-throughput and cost-effective species identification of all specimens within mixed trap catches. Nevertheless, incorporation of metabarcoding into insect diagnostic laboratories will first require the development and evaluation of protocols that adhere to the specialised regulatory requirements of invasive species surveillance. In this study, we develop a multi-locus non-destructive metabarcoding protocol that allows sensitive detection of agricultural pests, and subsequent confirmation using traditional diagnostic techniques. We validate this protocol for the detection of tomato potato psyllid (Bactericera cockerelli) and Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia) within **** communities and field survey traps. We find that metabarcoding can reliably detect target insects within mixed community samples, including specimens that morphological identification did not initially detect, but sensitivity appears inversely related to community size and is impacted by primer biases, target loci, and sample indexing strategy. While our multi-locus approach allowed independent validation of target detection, lack of reference sequences for 18S and 12S restricted its usefulness for estimating diversity in field samples. Each beetle species is known to have unique patterns on their hardened forewings (known as elytra) through which they can be identified. Currently, this is done through manual microanalysis of the insect or their fragments in contaminated food samples. We envision that the use of automated pattern analysis would expedite and scale up the identification process. However, such automation would require images to be captured in a consistent manner, thereby enabling the creation of large repositories of high-quality images. Presently, there is no standard imaging technique for capturing images of beetle elytra, which consequently means, there is no standard method of beetle species identification through elytral pattern analysis. This deficiency inspired us to optimize and standardize imaging methods, especially for food-contaminating beetles. For this endeavor, we chose multiple species of beetles belonging to different families or genera that have near-identical elytral patterns, and thus are difficult to identify correctly at the species level. Our optimized imaging method provides enhanced images such that the elytral patterns between individual species could easily be distinguished from each other, through visual observation. We believe such standardization is critical in developing automated species identification of pantry beetles and/or other insects. In the present study we demonstrate for the first time that 1-methyl nicotinamide (MNA), a derivative of vitamin B3, significantly (1.6 to 1.9 times) prolonged survival of BALB/c **** irradiated at LD30/30 (6.5 Gy), LD50/30 (7.0 Gy) or LD80/30 (7.5 Gy) of γ-rays when the MNA administration started as late as 7 days post irradiation. A slightly less efficient and only after the highest dose (7.5 Gy) of γ-rays was another vitamin B3 derivative, 1-methyl-3-acetylpyridine (1,3-MAP) (1.4-fold prolonged survival). These pro-survival effects did not seem to be mediated by stimulation of haematopoiesis, but might be related to anti-inflammatory and/or anti-thrombotic properties of the vitamin B3 derivatives. Our results show that MNA may represent a prototype of a radioremedial agent capable of mitigating the severity and/or progression of radiation-induced injuries when applied several hours or days after exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation.

Early-onset osteoporosis (EOOP) is defined by low bone mineral density (BMD), which increases the risk of fracture. Although the prevalence of osteoporosis at a young age is unknown, low BMD is highly linked to genetic background. Heterozygous pathogenic variants in low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) are associated with EOOP. This study aimed to investigate the genetic profile in patients with EOOP to better understand the variation in phenotype severity by using a targeted gene sequencing panel associated with bone fragility.
We used a sequencing panel with 17 genes reported to be related to bone fragility for analysis of 68 patients with EOOP. We found a high positivity rate of EOOP with LRP5 variants (14 patients, 20.6%). The remaining 79.4% of patients with EOOP but without LRP5 variants showed variable disease severity, as observed in patients with at least one variant in this gene. One patient, with multiple fractures and spine L1-L4 BMD Z-score -2.9, carried a novel pathogenisignaling pathway. Two-variant carriers of Wnt pathway genes had severe EOOP. Moreover, DKK1 and WNT3A genes should be included in next-generation sequence analyses of bone fragility.
Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is one of the most devastating diseases among children with cancer, thus novel strategies are urgently needed.
We retrospectively evaluated DIPG patients exposed to the carbohydrate restricted ketogenic diet (KD) with regard of feasibility, safety, and overall survival (OS).
Searches of MEDLINE and Embase identified five hits meeting the search criteria (diagnosis of DIPG and exposure to KD). One additional case was identified by contact with experts. Individual patient data were extracted from publications or obtained from investigators. The inclusion criteria for analysis of the data were defined as DIPG patients who were exposed to the KD for ≥3 months. Feasibility, as described in the literature, was the number of patients able to follow the KD for 3 months out of all DIPG patients identified. OS was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Five DIPG patients (males, n = 3; median age 4.4 years; range, 2.5-15 years) meeting the inclusion criteria were identified.ical outcome and OS appear not to be impacted in a negative way. KD might be proposed as adjuvant therapy when large prospective studies have shown feasibility and safety. Future studies might ideally assess the impact of KD on clinical outcome, quality of life, and efficacy.Item response theory (IRT) has been recently adopted to successfully characterize the progression of Parkinson's disease using serial Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) measurements. However, it has yet to be applied in predicting the longitudinal changes of levodopa dose requirements in the real-world setting. Here we use IRT to extract two latent variables that represent tremor and non-tremor-related symptoms from baseline assessments of UPDRS Part III scores. We show that relative magnitudes of the two latent variables are strong predictors of the progressive increase of levodopa equivalent dose (LED). Retrospectively collected item-level UPDRS Part III scores and longitudinal records of prescribed medication doses of 128 patients with de novo PD extracted from the electronic medical records were used for model building. Supplementary analysis based on a subset of 36 patients with at least three serial assessments of UPDRS Part III scores suggested that the two latent variables progress at significantly different rates. A web application was developed to facilitate the use of our model in making individualized predictions of future LED and disease progression.
Cachexia, characterized by loss of muscle with or without loss of fat mass, is a poor prognostic factor in patients with heart failure (HF). However, there is limited investigation on the prognostic impact of muscle and fat mass separately in HF. We hypothesized that muscle and fat mass have different effects on the prognosis of HF.

Early-onset osteoporosis (EOOP) is defined by low bone mineral density (BMD), which increases the risk of fracture. Although the prevalence of osteoporosis at a young age is unknown, low BMD is highly linked to genetic background. Heterozygous pathogenic variants in low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) are associated with EOOP. This study aimed to investigate the genetic profile in patients with EOOP to better understand the variation in phenotype severity by using a targeted gene sequencing panel associated with bone fragility. We used a sequencing panel with 17 genes reported to be related to bone fragility for analysis of 68 patients with EOOP. We found a high positivity rate of EOOP with LRP5 variants (14 patients, 20.6%). The remaining 79.4% of patients with EOOP but without LRP5 variants showed variable disease severity, as observed in patients with at least one variant in this gene. One patient, with multiple fractures and spine L1-L4 BMD Z-score -2.9, carried a novel pathogenisignaling pathway. Two-variant carriers of Wnt pathway genes had severe EOOP. We retrospectively evaluated DIPG patients exposed to the carbohydrate restricted ketogenic diet (KD) with regard of feasibility, safety, and overall survival (OS). Searches of MEDLINE and Embase identified five hits meeting the search criteria (diagnosis of DIPG and exposure to KD). One additional case was identified by contact with experts. Individual patient data were extracted from publications or obtained from investigators. The inclusion criteria for analysis of the data were defined as DIPG patients who were exposed to the KD for ≥3 months. We show that relative magnitudes of the two latent variables are strong predictors of the progressive increase of levodopa equivalent dose (LED). Retrospectively collected item-level UPDRS Part III scores and longitudinal records of prescribed medication doses of 128 patients with de novo PD extracted from the electronic medical records were used for model building. Supplementary analysis based on a subset of 36 patients with at least three serial assessments of UPDRS Part III scores suggested that the two latent variables progress at significantly different rates. A web application was developed to facilitate the use of our model in making individualized predictions of future LED and disease progression. In the parkland agroforestry system of northern Uganda, smallholder farming households rely on a diversity of plant species to fulfil their nutritional requirements, many of which also serve a range of medicinal, cultural, and livelihood functions. The purpose of the study was to assemble an inventory of indigenous plant species used as food in four districts within the Aswa River catchment of northern Uganda, and to document their utilization and management by rural communities.
From July 1999 to August 2000, a series of 61 community-based focus group discussions on the utilization of plant biodiversity were conducted in the vernacular language at 34 sites in four districts of northern Uganda, with participation by key informants self-selected on basis of their technical knowledge and personal interest. Of these, 232 respondents subsequently contributed to a collection of herbarium specimens, which were submitted to the Makerere University Herbarium for identification. On receipt of each specimen collectfood security resource, and a nutritional buffer against increasing risks and stressors on low-input smallholder agriculture. Further studies should assess the intra-species biodiversity of these resources, with respect to farmer-valued traits and vernacular (folk) classification systems.Trypanosoma cruzi is a zoonotic parasite endemic in the southern US and the Americas, which may frequently infect dogs, but limited information is available about infections in cats. We surveyed a convenience sample of 284 shelter cats from Southern Louisiana to evaluate T. cruzi infection using serological and PCR tests. Parasites from PCR positive cats were also genotyped by PCR and deep sequencing to assess their genetic diversity. We detected a seropositivity rate for T. cruzi of at least 7.3% (17/234), and 24.6% of cats (70/284) were PCR positive for the parasite. Seropositivity increased with cat age (R2 = 0.91, P = 0.011), corresponding to an incidence of 7.2% ± 1.3 per year, while PCR positivity decreased with age (R2 = 0.93, P = 0.007). Cats were predominantly infected with parasites from TcI and TcVI DTUs, and to a lesser extent from TcIV and TcV DTUs, in agreement with the circulation of these parasite DTUs in local transmission cycles. These results indicate that veterinarians should have a greater awareness of T. cruzi infection in pets and that it would be important to better evaluate the risk for spillover infections in humans.The integration of a viral genome into the host genome has a major impact on the trajectory of the infected cell. The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety profile of curettage and mixed bone grafting without instrument or with elastic intramedullary nailing in the treatment of humeral bone cyst in children.
Our retrospective study included a total of 48 children harboring humeral bone cyst in our hospital from August 2012 to February 2019. The patients enrolled were divided into elastic nailing group with the application of elastic intramedullary nailing (n = 25) and control group without using instrument (n = 23) during the management of curettage and mixed bone grafting. The following medical outcomes of the two groups were monitored and recorded the amount of intraoperative blood loss, operation time and postoperative full weight-bearing time, in addition to postoperative clinical effects after 1 year, the function and pain level of shoulder joint before and 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 16 months after operation. Follow-up radiographic outcomes were reviewed to observe bone healing, local recurrence and internal fixation loosening, and other postoperative complications.

We calculated the NLR by dividing the neutrophil count by the lymphocyte count. The healthcare providers were recruited from healthcare facilities providing HIV-related healthcare services, using a snowball sampling technique. A qualitative framework analysis was used to guide data analysis. Health stigma and discrimination framework guided the conceptualisation and discussion of the findings. The findings presented the views and perspectives of healthcare providers that HIV stigma and discrimination toward PLWHA still occurred within families, communities and healthcare settings. We analyzed the epidemiological and clinical characteristics associated with the disease severity and mortality in hypertensive vs. non-hypertensive deceased COVID-19 patients. Methods We included all the deceased patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 admitted to >200 health facilities in Wuhan between December 1 and February 24, 2020. The median survival time in COVID-19 patients with and without hypertension, the association of hypertension with the disease severity, and the risk factors associated with the COVID-19 mortality stratified by the hypertension status were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, logistic regression, and Cox proportional regression, respectively before and after the propensity score-matching (PS) for age and sex. Results The prevalence of hypertension in the studied 1,833 COVID-19 patients was 40.5%. Patients with hypertension were more likely to have severe COVID-19 illness than patients without hypertension; the PS-matched multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) was 2.44 (1.77-3.08). Moreover, the median survival time in the hypertension group was 3-5 days shorter than the non-hypertension group. There was a 2-fold increased risk of COVID-19 mortality in the hypertension group compared with the non-hypertension group; the PS-matched multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 2.04 (1.61-2.72), and the significant increased risk of COVID-19 mortality in the moderate vs. mild COVID-19 illness was confined to patients with hypertension. Additionally, the history and the number of underlying chronic diseases, occupation, and residential location showed stronger associations with the COVID-19 mortality among patients with hypertension than patients without hypertension. The healthcare providers were recruited from healthcare facilities providing HIV-related healthcare services, using a snowball sampling technique. A qualitative framework analysis was used to guide data analysis. Health stigma and discrimination framework guided the conceptualisation and discussion of the findings. The findings presented the views and perspectives of healthcare providers that HIV stigma and discrimination toward PLWHA still occurred within families, communities and healthcare settings. We analyzed the epidemiological and clinical characteristics associated with the disease severity and mortality in hypertensive vs. non-hypertensive deceased COVID-19 patients. Methods We included all the deceased patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 admitted to >200 health facilities in Wuhan between December 1 and February 24, 2020. The median survival time in COVID-19 patients with and without hypertension, the association of hypertension with the disease severity, and the risk factors associated with the COVID-19 mortality stratified by the hypertension status were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, logistic regression, and Cox proportional regression, respectively before and after the propensity score-matching (PS) for age and sex. Results The prevalence of hypertension in the studied 1,833 COVID-19 patients was 40.5%. Patients with hypertension were more likely to have severe COVID-19 illness than patients without hypertension; the PS-matched multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) was 2.44 (1.77-3.08). Moreover, the median survival time in the hypertension group was 3-5 days shorter than the non-hypertension group. There was a 2-fold increased risk of COVID-19 mortality in the hypertension group compared with the non-hypertension group; the PS-matched multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 2.04 (1.61-2.72), and the significant increased risk of COVID-19 mortality in the moderate vs. mild COVID-19 illness was confined to patients with hypertension. Additionally, the history and the number of underlying chronic diseases, occupation, and residential location showed stronger associations with the COVID-19 mortality among patients with hypertension than patients without hypertension. Ninety-nine common bean genotypes were phenotyped in two seasons at two locations and genotyped with 16 565 SNP markers. The genotypes exhibited significant variation for bean fly damage severity (BDS), plant mortality rate (PMR), and pupa count (PC). Likewise, the genotypes showed significant variation for agro-morphological traits such as days to flowering (DTF), days to maturity (DTM), number of pods per plant (NPP), number of seeds per pod (NSP), and grain yield (GYD). The genotypes were delineated into two populations, which were based on the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools. The genotypes exhibited a minimum membership coefficient of 0.60 to their respective populations. Eighty-three significant (P less then 0.01) markers were identified with an average linkage disequilibrium of 0.20 at 12Mb across the 11 chromosomes. The adoption of so-called "causal" methods to account for both/either measured and/or unmeasured confounders is an important addition to the methodological toolkit for understanding the distribution, progression, and consequences of infectious diseases (IDs) and interventions on IDs. Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, will be independently screened by two reviewers using Covidence software. Discrepancies will be resolved by a third reviewer. This systematic review protocol has been registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020204104).To practically determine the effect of chloride (Cl) on the acid-base status, four approaches are currently used accepted ranges of serum Cl values; Cl corrections; the serum Cl/Na ratio; and the serum Na-Cl difference. However, these approaches are governed by different concepts. Our aim is to investigate which approach to the evaluation of the effect of Cl is the best. In this retrospective cohort study, 2529 critically ill patients who were admitted to the tertiary care unit between 2011 and 2018 were retrospectively evaluated. The effects of Cl on the acid-base status according to each evaluative approach were validated by the standard base excess (SBE) and apparent strong ion difference (SIDa). To clearly demonstrate only the effects of Cl on the acid-base status, a subgroup that included patients with normal lactate, albumin and SIG values was created. Older adults occupy one third of acute care hospital beds, and the regular duties of many nurses include caring for older patients. A working knowledge of geriatric care competencies is necessary for nurses to provide high-quality care to older patients and their families. It is unclear how nurses who work in acute care hospitals self-evaluate their geriatric care competencies and how these self-evaluated abilities differ from the objective abilities of these nurses.
This study was designed to explore the geriatric care competencies of nurses in hospitals and to identify the factors associated with these competencies.
This was a cross-sectional study. Nurses who were employed and directly caring for patients aged 65 years and older in any of the adult wards of a medical center located in southern Taiwan were recruited as participants. A structured questionnaire was developed based on a review of the relevant literature and validated using expert consensus. This questionnaire included a demographic datascare competencies of nurses working in hospitals and to oversee the implementation of effective educational methods in Taiwan.
A significant gap was found between the self-perceived and actual competencies of nurses in terms of providing geriatric care. To identify medication therapy issues and resolutions, and assess their relationship to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among participants of the Patient-centered HIV Care Model (PCHCM) demonstration project.
Adult persons with HIV (PWH) in the United States were enrolled in the PCHCM from August 2014 to September 2016. Pharmacists conducted regular medication therapy reviews and documented ART and non-ART issues and suggested resolutions. Adherence to ART was calculated using proportion of days covered (PDC) and mean PDC by number of ART issues was compared using a generalized linear model with linear trend estimation.
The most common ART issue was adherence (57%). Adherence ART issues were resolved by adherence management (48%) or patient education (36%). Participants had a mean of 4.2 ART issues and 6.4 non-ART issues. PDC was 89% for those with 0 ART issues and 73% for those with ≥ 3 ART issues. Persons with 0 ART issues had an increase in adherence (+8%) in the post period, while those with ≥ 3 ART issues had a decrease in adherence (-6%) (P = .02) in the post period.
Identifying therapy issues could help pharmacists improve care for PWH. Because PWH are an aging population with increased risk of comorbidities and polypharmacy, pharmacists and providers should collaborate to provide holistic, primary care solutions to address both the number and nature of therapy issues.

HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) individuals are predisposed to adverse health outcomes, which in part may stem from the influence of an altered intrauterine milieu on fetal programming. The placenta serves as a readout for the effects of the maternal environment on the developing fetus and may itself contribute to the pathogenesis of disease.

We leveraged a previously established registry-based cohort of HEU adolescents and young adults to identify 26 subjects for whom placental histopathology was available. We further obtained placental tissue from 29 HIV-unexposed pregnancies for comparison. We examined differences in placental histopathology between groups, and related villous vascularity in the HEU group to prenatal maternal characteristics and long-term health outcomes.
Placentas from HEU pregnancies demonstrated a higher blood vessel count per villus as compared to controls (5.9 ± 1.0 vs. 5.4 ± 0.8, P = 0.05), which was independent of maternal prenatal age, race, BMI, smoking status, hemoglobin, and gestational age. Furthermore, within the HEU group, lower CD4+ T cell count during pregnancy was associated with greater placental vascularity (r = -0.44, P = 0.03). No significant relationships were observed between placental blood vessel count per villus and BMI z-score or reactive airway disease among HEU individuals later in life.
Placentas from HEU pregnancies demonstrated increased villous vascularity compared to HIV-unexposed controls in proportion to the severity of maternal immune dysfunction. Further studies are needed to examine intrauterine exposure to hypoxia as a potential mechanism of fetal programming in HIV.

HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) individuals are predisposed to adverse health outcomes, which in part may stem from the influence of an altered intrauterine milieu on fetal programming. The placenta serves as a readout for the effects of the maternal environment on the developing fetus and may itself contribute to the pathogenesis of disease. U.S. academic health system. We further obtained placental tissue from 29 HIV-unexposed pregnancies for comparison. Furthermore, within the HEU group, lower CD4+ T cell count during pregnancy was associated with greater placental vascularity (r = -0.44, P = 0.03). The relationships between ethical leadership, trust, psychological well-being, and organizational citizenship behaviors have rarely been investigated in nursing studies. The current study attempted to examine the relationships between perceived ethical leadership, trust, psychological health, and nurses' organizational citizenship behaviors towards their patients in the context of Chinese hospitals.
This research adopted a cross-sectional research design. Participants were 495 nurses solicited from six hospitals in China. Hayes's PROCESS and SPSS 22 were employed to analyze the data.
This study demonstrated ethical leadership perceived by nurses is positively associated with trust in management and psychological well-being. Trust in management is also positively associated with nurses' organizational citizenship behaviors. The indirect effects of perceived ethical leadership on organizational citizenship behaviors through trust in management and psychological well-being were statically significant.
This study adds value to the literature by revealing ethical leadership boosts nurses' trust in leadership and their psychological well-being, resulting in more organizational citizenship behaviors towards patients in the context of the Chinese hospitals. It integrates two different gauges and a pace setter for breathing into one device. The core of the device is a linear LED display which, using green, yellow, and red diodes, informs the subject about the correctness of self-application of respective stimulus. The settings of the device can be adjusted to the needs of the protocol chosen. The device can record the duration of mouth air pressure or the force produced by the subject during ANS tests, which assures correctness of the tests, thus allowing to track individual variability changes in the response to the test.

Implantable telemetric transponders for contactless measurement of physiological parameters are often used in animal-based research. After explantation, single-use devices cannot be re-implanted because of non-validated functionality and necessary re-sterilisation. This is disadvantageous because the battery life would enable a second implantation cycle in another animal. To save costs and time taken for the manufacturer's refurbishing process, we validated and implemented a re-sterilisation protocol for single-use transponders using hydrogen peroxide gas. The described protocol was established with models, i.e., for large (n = 7) and small (n = 3) animals, of telemetric device from 2 different manufacturers (Data Science International and EMKA). All transponders, prepared according to the protocol, were previously implanted subcutaneously in the flank of pigs or rats for a duration of 21 days. Our investigations demonstrate that disinfection only is not sufficient against bacterial contamination and that sterility can only be achieved by additional gas sterilisation with hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, re-implantation of the re-sterilised transponders into pigs caused neither undesired tissue reactions along the transponder nor impairment of the measured values when compared to the first implantation and after necropsy in 4 cases. We were able to demonstrate that, using our protocol, re-implantation of reprocessed single-use telemetric devices can be performed without compromising transponder quality.
Childhood atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disease which sometimes predisposes to allergies. Environmental factors (low humidity, irritants, etc.) are prominent causative triggers of AD.
This study aims to explore the effects of both meteorological factors and air pollutants on childhood AD, and the modification effects by season in Shanghai, China.
Quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression model, combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model was used to examine the nonlinear and lagged effects of environmental factors on childhood AD from 2009 to 2017 in Shanghai. We also performed a season-stratified analysis to determine the modification effects of environmental exposure by season on childhood AD.
There were 1,043,240 outpatient visits for childhood AD in total, at 3 major pediatric hospitals. Low temperature and relative humidity (RH), and high daily temperature difference (DTD) and air pollutants (i.e., NO2) increased the relative risks (RRs) of outpatient visits for childhood AD in the whole year. In the cold season, an increased risk of outpatient visits for childhood AD was associated with low RH (RR 2.26, 95% CI 1.69-3.02) and high NO2 (1.11, 95% CI 1.06-1.17). In the warm season, outpatient visits for childhood AD were associated with low temperature (3.49, 95% CI 3.22-3.77), low RH (1.89, 95% CI 1.74-2.06), high DTD (1.41, 95% CI 1.31-1.53), and high NO2 (1.05, 95% CI 1.03-1.06).
This study suggests that environmental exposure may be a key trigger for outpatient visits for childhood AD with apparent seasonal effects. Tailored preventive strategies to avoid environmental triggers of childhood AD should be developed.

Young and early middle-aged office workers spend most of the day sitting or sleeping. Few studies have used a metabolic chamber to report sitting resting energy expenditure (REE) or sleeping metabolic rate (SMR) estimation equations. This study aimed to develop novel equations for estimating sitting REE and SMR, and previously published equations for SMR were compared against measured values.
The relationships among sitting REE, SMR, and body composition measured in clinical trials were analyzed. The body composition (fat-free mass [FFM] and fat mass) and energy metabolism of 85 healthy young and early middle-aged Japanese individuals were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and a metabolic chamber, respectively. Novel estimate equations were developed using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Estimates of SMR using a new equation and 2 published equations were compared against measured SMR.
