Our findings provide new insights into the molecular evolution of SS/ASTC-type signalling in the animal kingdom and reveal an ancient role of SS-type neuropeptides as inhibitory regulators of muscle contractility.Coronavirus E protein is a small membrane protein found in the virus envelope. Different coronavirus E proteins share striking biochemical and functional similarities, but sequence conservation is limited. In this report, we studied the E protein topology from the new SARS-CoV-2 virus both in microsomal membranes and in mammalian cells. Experimental data reveal that E protein is a single-spanning membrane protein with the N-terminus being translocated across the membrane, while the C-terminus is exposed to the cytoplasmic side (Ntlum/Ctcyt). The defined membrane protein topology of SARS-CoV-2 E protein may provide a useful framework to understand its interaction with other viral and host components and contribute to establish the basis to tackle the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2.The world is passing through a very difficult phase due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has disrupted almost all spheres of life. Globally, according to the latest World Health Organization report (10 August 2020), COVID-19 has affected nearly 20 million lives, causing 728 013 deaths. Due to the lack of specific therapeutic drugs and vaccines, the outbreak of disease has spawned a corpus of contagious infection all over the world, day by day, without control. As the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has a very rapid infection rate, it is essential to develop a novel ameliorative and curative strategy as quickly as possible. Convalescent plasma (CP) therapy is a type of adaptive immunity that has already been found to be effective in confronting several infectious diseases from the last two decades. For example, CP therapy was used in the treatment of viral-induced diseases like SARS-CoV epidemics, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) pandemics, Ebola epidemics and H1N1 pandemic. In this review, we have mainly focused on the therapeutic role of CP therapy and its neutralizing effect to fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.Background and Objective Combination therapy may be a treatment option against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CR-AB) infections. In this study, we explored the utility of fosfomycin in combination with meropenem (FOS/MEM) against CR-AB isolates. Materials and Methods Screening of synergistic activity of FOS/MEM was performed using the checkerboard assay. A pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic analysis was performed for various FOS/MEM regimens using Monte Carlo simulations. Results The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) required to inhibit the growth of 50% of the isolates (MIC50) and ****required to inhibit the growth of 90% of the isolates (MIC90) of FOS and MEM were reduced fourfold and twofold, respectively. The combination was synergistic against 14/50 isolates. No antagonism was observed. Sixteen out of fifty isolates had MEM **** of ≤8 mg/L when subjected to combination therapy, compared to none with monotherapy. Forty-one out of 50 isolates had FOS **** of ≤128 mg/L when subjected to combination therapy, compared to 17/50 isolates with monotherapy. The cumulative fraction response for MEM and FOS improved from 0% to 40% and 40% to 80%, with combination therapy, respectively. Conclusions Addition of MEM improved the in vitro activity of FOS against the CR-AB isolates. FOS/MEM could be a plausible option to treat CR-AB for a small fraction of isolates.Meaning in life has long been a mystery of human existence. In this review, we seek to demystify this construct. Then we review evidence that meaning in life, for all its mystery, is a rather commonplace experience. We then define the construct and review its constituent facets comprehension/coherence, purpose, and existential mattering/significance. We review the many experiences that have been shown to enhance meaning in life and close by considering important remaining research questions about this fascinating topic.Behavior genetics studies how genetic differences among people contribute to differences in their psychology and behavior. Here, I describe how the conclusions and methods of behavior genetics have evolved in the postgenomic era in which the human genome can be directly measured. First, I revisit the first law of behavioral genetics stating that everything is heritable, and I describe results from large-scale meta-analyses of twin data and new methods for estimating heritability using measured DNA. Second, I describe new methods in statistical genetics, including genome-wide association studies and polygenic score analyses. Third, I describe the next generation of work on gene × environment interaction, with a particular focus on how genetic influences vary across sociopolitical contexts and exogenous environments. Genomic technology has ushered in a golden age of new tools to address enduring questions about how genes and environments combine to create unique human lives.Research in psychology has shown that even routinely experienced everyday objects such as brands can trigger cognitively engaging, emotional, and socially meaningful experiences. In this article, we review three key areas where current advances reside brands as passive objects with utilitarian and symbolic meanings, brands as relationship partners and regulators of personal relationships, and brands as creators of social identity with social group linking value. Research in these areas is grounded in a number of fundamental perspectives within cognitive, emotional, motivational, personality, interpersonal, and group psychology. We conclude by addressing emerging areas for research.To explain trade-offs in choice, researchers have proposed myriad phenomena and decision rules, each paired with separate theories and idiosyncratic vocabularies. The non-selective property of conventional polyurethane (PU) foam tends to lower its oil absorption efficiency. To address this issue, we modified the surface properties of PU foam using a rapid solvent-free surface functionalization approach based on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to establish an extremely thin yet uniform coating layer to improve foam performance. The PU foam was respectively functionalized using different monomers, i.e., perfluorodecyl acrylate (PFDA), 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl acrylate (HFBA), and hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), and the effect of deposition times (1, 5 and 10 min) on the properties of foam was investigated. The results showed that all the modified foams demonstrated a **** higher water contact angle (i.e., greater hydrophobicity) and greater absorption capacities compared to the control PU foam. This is due to the presence of specific functional groups, e.g., fluorine (F) and silane (Si) in the modified PU foams. Of all, the PU/PHFBAi foam exhibited the highest absorption capacities, recording 66.68, 58.15, 53.70, and 58.38 g/g for chloroform, acetone, cyclohexane, and edible oil, respectively. These values were 39.19-119.31% higher than that of control foam. The promising performance of the PU/PHFBAi foam is due to the improved surface hydrophobicity attributed to the original perfluoroalkyl moieties of the HFBA monomer. The PU/PHFBAi foam also demonstrated a **** more stable absorption performance compared to the control foam when both samples were reused for up to 10 cycles. This clearly indicates the positive impact of the proposed functionalization method in improving PU properties for oil absorption processes.This paper proposes a high-speed low-cost VLSI system capable of on-chip online learning for classifying address-event representation (AER) streams from dynamic vision sensor (DVS) retina chips. The proposed system executes a lightweight statistic algorithm based on simple binary features extracted from AER streams and a Random Ferns classifier to classify these features. The proposed system's characteristics of multi-level pipelines and parallel processing circuits achieves a high throughput up to 1 spike event per clock cycle for AER data processing. Thanks to the nature of the lightweight algorithm, our hardware system is realized in a low-cost memory-centric paradigm. In addition, the system is capable of on-chip online learning to flexibly adapt to different in-situ application scenarios. The extra overheads for on-chip learning in terms of time and resource consumption are quite low, as the training procedure of the Random Ferns is quite simple, requiring few auxiliary learning circuits. An FPGA prototype of the proposed VLSI system was implemented with 9.5~96.7% memory consumption and less then 11% computational and logic resources on a Xilinx Zynq-7045 chip platform. It was running at a clock frequency of 100 MHz and achieved a peak processing throughput up to 100 Meps (Mega events per second), with an estimated power consumption of 690 mW leading to a high energy efficiency of 145 Meps/W or 145 event/μJ. We tested the prototype system on MNIST-DVS, Poker-DVS, and Posture-DVS datasets, and obtained classification accuracies of 77.9%, 99.4% and 99.3%, respectively. In the simulated environment with a density of 0.327 RPs/m2, a mean error of 0.490 m for the localization of random TPs was achieved. These results are important contributions and allow us to conclude that the method is promising for locating objects in indoor environments.Recent studies have shown the ability of electrochemical methods to sense and determine, even at very low concentrations, the presence and quantity of molecules or analytes including pharmaceutical samples. Furthermore, analytical methods, such as high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), can also detect the presence and quantity of peptides at very low concentrations, in a simple, fast, and efficient way, which allows the monitoring of conjugation reactions and its completion. Graphite/SiO2 film electrodes and HPLC methods were previously shown by our group to be efficient to detect drug molecules, such as losartan. We now use these methods to detect the conjugation efficiency of a peptide from the immunogenic region of myelin oligodendrocyte to a carrier, mannan. The HPLC method furthermore confirms the stability of the peptide with time in a simple one pot procedure. Our study provides a general method to monitor, sense and detect the presence of peptides by effectively confirming the conjugation efficiency.

A null mutation in a patient can facilitate phenotype assignment and uncovers the function of that specific gene. We present five sibs of a consanguineous Pakistani family afflicted with a new syndrome with an unusual combination of skeletal anomalies including cranial asymmetry, fused sagittal sutures deviating from the medial axis, mandibular prognathia, maxillary hypoplasia, misaligned and crowded teeth, delayed bone age, multiple dislocations, hypoplastic and malpositioned patellae, humeral intracondylar fissures, scapular dyskinesis, long limbs, lumbar lordosis, protruding chest, prominent clavicles, short 5th digital rays, and ventral transverse digital creases plus features of cutis laxa. We mapped the disease gene locus to a 3.62-Mb region at 17q25.3 and identified a homozygous deletion of maximal 7.3 kb deduced to totally inactivate MYADML2 and downstream gene PYCR1, biallelic variants in which cause autosomal recessive cutis laxa (ARCL). All five affected sibs had the most common features of ARCL but not many of the less common ones. We attributed the anomalies not typical for ARCL to MYADML2 deficit, because no other genetic defect possibly a candidate to underlie the skeletal phenotype was found. MYADML2 is a gene of unknown function, has not been studied, and has not been associated with disease. Our findings present a possible phenotype for MYADML2 deficit that includes impaired bone patterning and maturation, definitely show that the gene is not essential for survival, and provide a start point for future studies on the function of MYADML2 protein. Detection of new patients is needed to confirm and delineate MYADML2-deficiency phenotype.The thermoelectric properties (TEPs), consisting of Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity, are infinite-dimensional vectors because they depend on temperature. Accordingly, a projection of them into a finite-dimensional space is inevitable for use in computers. In this paper, as a dimension reduction method, we validate the use of high-order polynomial interpolation of TEPs at Chebyshev nodes of the second kind. To avoid the numerical instability of high order Lagrange polynomial interpolation, we use the barycentric formula. The numerical tests on 276 sets of published TEPs show at least 8 nodes are recommended to preserve the positivity of electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ficz.html With 11 nodes, the interpolation causes about 2% error in TEPs and only 0.4% error in thermoelectric generator module performance. The robustness of our method against noise in TEPs is also tested; as the relative error caused by the interpolation of TEPs is almost the same as the relative size of noise, the interpolation does not cause unnecessarily high oscillation at unsampled points. The accuracy and robustness of the interpolation indicate digitizing infinite-dimensional univariate material data is practicable with tens or less data points. A null mutation in a patient can facilitate phenotype assignment and uncovers the function of that specific gene. We present five sibs of a consanguineous Pakistani family afflicted with a new syndrome with an unusual combination of skeletal anomalies including cranial asymmetry, fused sagittal sutures deviating from the medial axis, mandibular prognathia, maxillary hypoplasia, misaligned and crowded teeth, delayed bone age, multiple dislocations, hypoplastic and malpositioned patellae, humeral intracondylar fissures, scapular dyskinesis, long limbs, lumbar lordosis, protruding chest, prominent clavicles, short 5th digital rays, and ventral transverse digital creases plus features of cutis laxa. We mapped the disease gene locus to a 3.62-Mb region at 17q25.3 and identified a homozygous deletion of maximal 7.3 kb deduced to totally inactivate MYADML2 and downstream gene PYCR1, biallelic variants in which cause autosomal recessive cutis laxa (ARCL). All five affected sibs had the most common features of ARCL but not many of the less common ones. We attributed the anomalies not typical for ARCL to MYADML2 deficit, because no other genetic defect possibly a candidate to underlie the skeletal phenotype was found. MYADML2 is a gene of unknown function, has not been studied, and has not been associated with disease. Our findings present a possible phenotype for MYADML2 deficit that includes impaired bone patterning and maturation, definitely show that the gene is not essential for survival, and provide a start point for future studies on the function of MYADML2 protein. In this paper, as a dimension reduction method, we validate the use of high-order polynomial interpolation of TEPs at Chebyshev nodes of the second kind. To avoid the numerical instability of high order Lagrange polynomial interpolation, we use the barycentric formula. Through analyzing high-speed videos, we found that the detachment of the live remora (Echeneis naucrates) is a rapid behavior that can happen within 240 ms. We separate this remarkable behavior into three stages 1) lamellae folding down and soft lip curling, 2) disc raising and 3) complete detachment. To quantitatively investigate the detachment behavior, we fabricated a multi-material biomimetic disc and utilized it to study each stage of the detachment process. In stage one, we found that folding down lamellae is essential for decreasing the detachment resistance (vertical interfacial force and friction force) of the suction disc. Also, curling up the soft lip to breaking the adhesive seal reduced the vertical pull-off force up to 94 times. During disc raising in stage 2, we found that the partially flexible base (Young's modulus ∼3 MPa) of the disc can lead to a 30% power-use reduction compared to a rigid base (Young's modulus ∼3 GPa). After completing full detachment in stage 3, the corresponding drag wake flow decreased by 44% compared to an attached state due to lamellae folding and the entire soft lip uncurling. We developed a bio-inspired remora suckerfish robot propelled by a water jet to demonstrate a complete detachment which covers all three stages within 200 ms. We also demonstrated that an ROV has both hitchhiking and pick-and-place capabilities by integrating remora-inspired discs at appropriate locations. By balancing excitation and inhibition in multiple pathways, experience-dependent inhibitory plasticity can generate different variants of prediction-error circuits, which can be distinguished by simulated optogenetic experiments. The experience-dependence of the model circuit is consistent with that of negative prediction-error circuits in layer 2/3 of mouse primary visual cortex. Our model makes a range of testable predictions that may shed light on the circuitry underlying the neural computation of prediction errors.The human cortex is characterized by local morphological features such as cortical thickness, myelin content, and gene expression that change along the posterior-anterior axis. We investigated if some of these structural gradients are associated with a similar gradient in a prominent feature of brain activity - namely the frequency of oscillations. In resting-state MEG recordings from healthy participants (N = 187) using mixed effect models, we found that the dominant peak frequency in a brain area decreases significantly along the posterior-anterior axis following the global hierarchy from early sensory to higher order areas. This spatial gradient of peak frequency was significantly anticorrelated with that of cortical thickness, representing a proxy of the cortical hierarchical level. High-throughput mRNA sequencing shows selective translocon engagement with hundreds of different multi-pass membrane proteins. Consistent with a role in multi-pass membrane protein biogenesis, cells lacking different accessory components show reduced levels of one such client, the glutamate transporter EAAT1. These results identify a new human translocon and provide a molecular framework for understanding its role in multi-pass membrane protein biogenesis.

Although the efficacy of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke (AIS) is well documented, early neurological deterioration after EVT remains a serious issue associated with poor outcome. Besides obvious causes, such as lack of reperfusion, procedural complications, or parenchymal hemorrhage, early neurological deterioration may remain unexplained (UnEND). Our aim was to investigate predictors of UnEND after EVT in patients with AIS.
Patients who underwent EVT for AIS, with an initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score >5, Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score ≥6, and included in a multicenter prospective observational registry were analyzed. Predictors of UnEND, defined as ≥4-point increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score between baseline and day 1 after EVT, were determined via center-adjusted analyses.
Among the 1925 included in the analysis, 128 UnEND (6.6%) were recorded. In multivariate analysis, predictors of UnEND were diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR], 2.17 [95% CI, 1.32-3.56]), prestroke modified Rankin Scale score ≥2 (OR, 2.22 [95% CI, 1.09-4.55]), general anesthesia (OR, 2.55 [95% CI, 1.51-4.30]), admission systolic blood pressure (OR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.01-1.20]), age (OR, 1.38 [95% CI, 1.14-1.67]), number of passes (OR, 1.16 [95% CI, 1.04-1.28]), direct admission or not to a comprehensive stroke center (OR, 0.49 [95% CI, 0.30-0.81]), and initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (OR, 0.65 [95% CI, 0.52-0.81]).

Literatures were searched in big databases and major meetings from December 6, 2009, to December 6, 2019, including RCTs and observational studies comparing EVT against MT for patients with acute ischemic stroke. Observational studies were precategorized into 3 groups based on imaging data on admission mild stroke group with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score <6, severe stroke group with Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score <6 or ischemic core ≥50 mL, and normal stroke group for all others. Outcome was measured as modified Rso in line with the guidelines. On the contrary to the guideline, our data do not support EVT for patients with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score <6.
Evidence from RCTs and observational studies supports the use of EVT as the first-line choice for eligible patients corresponding to the latest guideline. For patients with Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score less then 6, EVT showed superiority over MT, also in line with the guidelines. On the contrary to the guideline, our data do not support EVT for patients with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score less then 6.
The molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of coronary arteries during development and during cardiac neovascularization after injury are poorly understood. However, a detailed description of the relevant signaling pathways and functional TFs (transcription factors) regulating these processes is still incomplete.
The goal of this study is to identify novel cardiac transcriptional mechanisms of coronary angiogenesis and vessel remodeling by defining the molecular signatures of coronary vascular endothelial cells during these complex processes.

Although the efficacy of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke (AIS) is well documented, early neurological deterioration after EVT remains a serious issue associated with poor outcome. Besides obvious causes, such as lack of reperfusion, procedural complications, or parenchymal hemorrhage, early neurological deterioration may remain unexplained (UnEND). Our aim was to investigate predictors of UnEND after EVT in patients with AIS. Patients who underwent EVT for AIS, with an initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score >5, Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score ≥6, and included in a multicenter prospective observational registry were analyzed. Predictors of UnEND, defined as ≥4-point increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score between baseline and day 1 after EVT, were determined via center-adjusted analyses. Among the 1925 included in the analysis, 128 UnEND (6.6%) were recorded. In multivariate analysis, predictors of UnEND were diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR], 2.17 [95% CI, 1.32-3.56]), prestroke modified Rankin Scale score ≥2 (OR, 2.22 [95% CI, 1.09-4.55]), general anesthesia (OR, 2.55 [95% CI, 1.51-4.30]), admission systolic blood pressure (OR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.01-1.20]), age (OR, 1.38 [95% CI, 1.14-1.67]), number of passes (OR, 1.16 [95% CI, 1.04-1.28]), direct admission or not to a comprehensive stroke center (OR, 0.49 [95% CI, 0.30-0.81]), and initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (OR, 0.65 [95% CI, 0.52-0.81]). Observational studies were precategorized into 3 groups based on imaging data on admission mild stroke group with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score <6, severe stroke group with Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score <6 or ischemic core ≥50 mL, and normal stroke group for all others. Outcome was measured as modified Rso in line with the guidelines. On the contrary to the guideline, our data do not support EVT for patients with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score <6. Evidence from RCTs and observational studies supports the use of EVT as the first-line choice for eligible patients corresponding to the latest guideline. However, a detailed description of the relevant signaling pathways and functional TFs (transcription factors) regulating these processes is still incomplete. The goal of this study is to identify novel cardiac transcriptional mechanisms of coronary angiogenesis and vessel remodeling by defining the molecular signatures of coronary vascular endothelial cells during these complex processes. In the univariate analysis, hyponatremic patients were more often current smokers (p = 0.01), alcohol consumers (p = 0.01), receiving spironolactone (p = 0.004) or combination of furosemide and spironolactone (p = 0.003). The epitope of 32A9 was located in the region of the GPC3 protein core close to the modification sites of the HS chain and outside of the Wnt-binding site of GPC3. The 32A9 antibody significantly inhibited HCC xenograft tumor growth in vivo. We then pursued two 32A9-based immunotherapeutic strategies by constructing an immunotoxin and CAR-T cells. The 32A9 immunotoxin exhibited specific cytotoxicity to GPC3-positive cancer cells, while 32A9 CAR-T cells efficiently eliminated GPC3-positive HCC cells in vitro and caused HCC xenograft tumor regressions in vivo.

Adolescents experience higher levels of non-adherence to HIV treatment. Drug concentration in hair promises to be reliable for assessing exposure to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. Pharmacokinetic modelling can explore utility of drug in hair. We aimed at developing and validating a pharmacokinetic model based on atazanavir/ritonavir (ATV/r) in hair and identify factors associated with variabilities in hair accumulation.
We based the study on secondary data analysis whereby data from a previous study on Zimbabwean adolescents which collected hair samples at enrolment and 3months follow-up was used in model development. We performed model development in NONMEM (version 7.3) ADVAN 13.
There is 16% / 18% of the respective ATV/r in hair as a ratio of steady-state trough plasma concentrations. At follow-up, we estimated an increase of 30% /42% of respective ATV/r in hair. We associated a unit increase in adherence score with 2% increase in hair concentration both ATV/r. Thinner participants had 54% higher while overweight had 21% lower atazanavir in hair compared to normal weight participants. Adolescents receiving care from fellow siblings had atazanavir in hair at least 54% less compared to other forms of care.
The determinants of increased ATV/r concentrations in hair found in our analysis are monitoring at follow up event, body mass index, and caregiver status. Measuring drug concentration in hair is feasibly accomplished and could be more accurate for monitoring ARV drugs exposure.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome virus SARS-CoV-2, a close relative of the SARS-CoV virus, is the cause of the recent COVID-19 pandemic affecting, to date, over 14 million individuals across the globe and demonstrating relatively high rates of infection and mortality. A third virus, the H5N1, responsible for avian influenza, has caused infection with some clinical similarities to those in COVID-19 infections. Cytokines, small proteins that modulate immune responses, have been directly implicated in some of the severe responses seen in COVID-19 patients, e.g. cytokine storms. Understanding the immune processes related to COVID-19, and other similar infections, could help identify diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets.
Here we examine data of cytokine, immune cell types, and disease associations captured from biomedical literature associated with COVID-19, Coronavirus in general, SARS, and H5N1 influenza, with the objective of identifying potentially useful relationships and areas for future reseainterventions. In a fast moving pandemic the approach taken here will identify trends and enable rapid comparison to the literature of related diseases.
Caring for patients with chronic disorders can lead to different problems for caregivers in physical, psychological, social, family, and financial domains. High levels of burden of care can make caregivers vulnerable to physical and psychological conditions and influence their quality of life. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to estimate the overall percentage of burden of care in caregivers of Iranian patients with chronic disorders.
A total of 25 articles published from inception to February 2019 were reviewed. Search for articles was conducted in international (Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and domestic (Scientific Information Database (SID) and MagIran) databases, using the following keywords "Caregiver," "Burden," and "Iran," and their possible combinations. The data were analyzed using the meta-analysis method and the random effects model. All the analyses were performed using STATA, version 14.

In 2017, the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) revised the classification of both seizures and epilepsy types in an effort to use less ambiguous terminology. Over time, definitions for status epilepticus, febrile seizures, and neonatal seizures have also evolved, as has the delineation of various epilepsy syndromes by age.
Review of the literature for old and new terminology and various epilepsy syndromes was accomplished using the PubMed database system.
In the following article, we review old terminology for classifying seizures and epilepsy as compared to the new (2017) ILAE guidelines. We discuss neonatal seizures, status epilepticus, febrile seizures, autoimmune epilepsy and various epilepsy syndromes by age of onset.

Personal exposure to household air pollutants include household characteristics, combustion of solid fuels, cooking practices, and household pest allergens. This review outlines important sources of indoor air pollution, their respiratory health effects, and strategies to reduce household pollution and improve lung health across the globe.Phytohormones are interrelated by synergistic or antagonistic crosstalk and play important roles in the regulation of plant growth and development. In order to understand the interaction between phytohormones in the plant physiological network, it is necessary to determine trace levels of multiple phytohormones simultaneously in a complex matrix. Here, we synthesized ionic liquids containing different functional groups and modified the surface of carbon fibers with them. Based on these carbon fibers-ionic liquid (CFs-IL) materials, a solid phase microextraction method was developed to enable the simultaneous extraction of phytohormones. The adsorption specificity of multiple phytohormones was studied by identifying the hydrophobic, electrostatic, and π-π interactions, as well as hydrogen bonds, which favor simultaneous extraction of the relevant acidic, alkaline and neutral phytohormones by improving compatibility. The proposed method, coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, was applied to the simultaneous determination of 13 acidic, alkaline and neutral phytohormones in tomato. The limits of quantification were found to be in the range of 0.32-54.05 ng mL-1 and 4.6-185.8 pg mL-1, respectively, when measured by QQQ and Q-TOF. All of the relative recoveries were in the range of 94.40-113.37% with RSDs ≤15.36% (n = 3) for spiked tomato samples. This method is expected to be widely applied to multiple phytohormones analysis for in-depth researches concerning the physiological networks of plants.
Transmembrane 4 L six family member 1 (TM4SF1) is upregulated in several epithelial cancers and is closely associated with poor prognosis. However, the role of TM4SF1 and its potential mechanism in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain elusive.
We investigated the expression of TM4SF1 in the Oncomine, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases and confirmed the results by immunohistochemistry (IHC), qPCR and Western blotting (WB) of CRC tissues. The effect of TM4SF1 on the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cancer stemness of CRC cells was investigated by Transwell, wound healing and sphere formation assays. In the following article, we review old terminology for classifying seizures and epilepsy as compared to the new (2017) ILAE guidelines. We discuss neonatal seizures, status epilepticus, febrile seizures, autoimmune epilepsy and various epilepsy syndromes by age of onset. Adopting a classification system that uses plain language allows for more effective and efficient communication between individuals and across specialties. This review outlines important sources of indoor air pollution, their respiratory health effects, and strategies to reduce household pollution and improve lung health across the globe.Phytohormones are interrelated by synergistic or antagonistic crosstalk and play important roles in the regulation of plant growth and development. In order to understand the interaction between phytohormones in the plant physiological network, it is necessary to determine trace levels of multiple phytohormones simultaneously in a complex matrix. Here, we synthesized ionic liquids containing different functional groups and modified the surface of carbon fibers with them. Based on these carbon fibers-ionic liquid (CFs-IL) materials, a solid phase microextraction method was developed to enable the simultaneous extraction of phytohormones. The adsorption specificity of multiple phytohormones was studied by identifying the hydrophobic, electrostatic, and π-π interactions, as well as hydrogen bonds, which favor simultaneous extraction of the relevant acidic, alkaline and neutral phytohormones by improving compatibility. The proposed method, coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, was applied to the simultaneous determination of 13 acidic, alkaline and neutral phytohormones in tomato. The limits of quantification were found to be in the range of 0.32-54.05 ng mL-1 and 4.6-185.8 pg mL-1, respectively, when measured by QQQ and Q-TOF. All of the relative recoveries were in the range of 94.40-113.37% with RSDs ≤15.36% (n = 3) for spiked tomato samples. However, previous plant conservation studies in East Africa only focused on protected areas and ignored unprotected areas. Future conservation strategies of plants, such as Lobelia, will depend on knowledge of their distribution patterns and habitat preference in East Africa. To understand the distribution pattern and the habitat preference of Lobelia in five countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi) of East Africa, we conducted a literature review in the seven major vegetation regions (afro-alpine, afro-montane forest, drier savannah, grasslands, wetter savannah, Zambezian woodland and semi-desert and desert). We also employed meander and patterned searches, which allowed greater opportunities for recording Lobelia species. Our results showed that the genus is distributed in all of the seven regions of the five countries with 54 taxa. The afro-montane forest region, with 41 taxa, is the richest in species diversity, followed by the Zambezian woodland region with 18 taxa. The semi-desert and desert region has the lowest number with only four taxa. The afro-alpine region has 15 taxa, although the region is the smallest by area. The herbaceous type was found in all regions, while the giant type has a clear preference for the afro-alpine and afro-montane forest regions. Traditionally, Xenophyllum species were treated as members of the genus Werneria, a morphologically close genus that includes rosettiform or scapiform perennial herbs. As currently circumscribed, Xenophyllum mostly differs from Werneria in having elongate stems. Herein, the first modern and comprehensive revision of the genus recognizing twenty-two species and two subspecies is presented. Werneria decumbens is synonymized with X. weddellii, as well as X. fontii with X. humile and X. oscartovarii with X. dactylophyllum. Likewise, four varietal names and two sectional names are proposed as new synonyms. Seven names are lectotypified, the name X. sotarense is epitypified, W. decumbens neotypified, and the supraspecific name W. sect. Integrifoliae Rockh. is typified. The combination X. crassum subsp. orientalecomb. nov. is made. Descriptions and distribution maps are provided for all accepted species, in addition to an identification key. Ten species are illustrated, three of them for the first time.

The species of S. sect. Arenosae are characterized by narrowly lanceolate calyx teeth, which are often highly polymorphic, and lanceolate to oblanceolate (non-spathulate) basal leaves. The provided taxonomic revision is based on morphological characters and supported by phylogenetic analyses of two nuclear loci (nrITS and an intron of the RPB2 gene) and one chloroplast locus (the intron of the rps16 gene). The species descriptions are formalized using a novel implementation of the Prometheus Description Model.The Andean genus Xenophyllum (Compositae, Senecioneae) is distributed along the high-Andes from northeastern Colombia to northern Chile and northwestern Argentina, mainly thriving in the paramo and puna ecoregions. It comprises suffruticose plants forming dense mats, hummocks, or clumps of erect stems. They are characterized by displaying involucral bracts fused at the base, supplementary bracts absent, and mostly radiate capitula with white ray corollas, seldom yellow or pink (disciform in one species). Traditionally, Xenophyllum species were treated as members of the genus Werneria, a morphologically close genus that includes rosettiform or scapiform perennial herbs. As currently circumscribed, Xenophyllum mostly differs from Werneria in having elongate stems. Herein, the first modern and comprehensive revision of the genus recognizing twenty-two species and two subspecies is presented. Werneria decumbens is synonymized with X. weddellii, as well as X. fontii with X. humile and X. oscartovarii with X. dactylophyllum. Likewise, four varietal names and two sectional names are proposed as new synonyms. Seven names are lectotypified, the name X. sotarense is epitypified, W. decumbens neotypified, and the supraspecific name W. sect. Integrifoliae Rockh. is typified. The combination X. crassum subsp. orientalecomb. nov. is made. Descriptions and distribution maps are provided for all accepted species, in addition to an identification key.
