    Antibiotic resistance is the main cause of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) treatment failure. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of antibiotic resistance of H.pylori isolates in Beijing in the last 8years and to estimate the impact of previous eradication failure on resistance patterns.

    This retrospective study included data from a single center in Beijing from 2013 to 2020. Antibiotic susceptibility of 365 clinical H.pylori isolates was tested for amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and tetracycline. Generally, devices with radioactive sources are used to measure the variation of FFT density or solids concentration inline, but to date there is no suitable device for in situ monitoring in tailings storage facilities such as large tailings ponds. In this study, an alternative method using high-resolution spectrometry based on a low radiation intensity source and a cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector was used to measure the solids content in tailings samples based on X-ray attenuation. The radiation source used in the experiment was a 1 μCi 133 Ba. GEANT4, a Monte Carlo-based simulation code that calculates the transmission of radiation through matter, was used to simulate the results of this study and build calibration curves that can determine the solids content concentration based on measured sample composition. Experiments and simulations were performed on various concentrations of both actual FFT samples from tailings facilities and kaolin as a model material. Good agreement between the experimental and simulation results was observed, paving the way for a potential real-time solids content measurement system that could be deployed over large areas to measure the settling of FFT in tailings ponds.
    Pre-school dental caries is a significant public health problem and may be associated with the growth and nutritional status of children. This study aimed to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and early childhood caries (ECC) among pre-school children.

    This population-based retrospective study involves all 5-year-old children who resided in northern New Zealand and received school entry dental examinations between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2015. ECC status was determined with the decayed missing filled teeth (dmft) score obtained from a routinely collected regional dental data set. Objectively measured BMI information was obtained from the 'Before School Check' (B4SC) Programme. Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between BMI and the occurrence of ECC (dmft score ≥ 1). Ethnic subgroup analyses were also conducted.

    Of the 27 333 children involved in this analysis, 11 173 (40.9%) had ECC with a mean dmft score of 1.85, and 3948 (14.4%) were overweight and 2964 (10.8%) were obese at school entry. The prevalence of ECC was higher in overweight and obese children but in subgroup analyses by ethnicity, this positive association was observed in European children only (adjusted odds ratio for overweight children compared to normal weight children 1.16; 95% CI 1.02, 1.32 and adjusted odds ratio for obese children 1.20; 95% CI 1.00, 1.45).

In particular, mechanistic studies on the development and evolution of mouth-form plasticity, predation and associated self-recognition processes enabled unique insight into life history strategies and the evolution of novelty. These studies include a comparative research agenda making use of the 39 available species of Pristionchus, all of which can be studied in living cultures. Sampling efforts revealed that Asia represents a biodiversity hotspot for Pristionchus worms. However, previous samplings have a bias towards northern and island areas, largely for logistic reasons. Here, we report on two extensive sampling trips to the Yunnan and Shaanxi provinces in Mainland China. We report the isolation of nine new Pristionchus species by morphology, morphometrics, mating experiments and genome-wide sequence analysis.In 2009, Jones and Deitz published a tribe-level taxonomic revision and reclassification of the cryptic, arboreal leafhopper subfamily Ledrinae Kirschbaum, 1868 (Hemiptera Cicadellidae), based on cladistic analyses of 235 morphological features for 75 cicadellid species.   • The data demonstrated a positive correlation between halitosis and enzymatic activity, suggesting that the enzyme exerts a direct role in the occurrence of bad breath. Gas-chromatography analysis demonstrated that exogenously added enzyme led to the alteration of volatile organic content, confirming a direct contribution of β-glucosidase activity on saliva volatile compounds release. Although halitosis is a multifactorial condition, the complete understanding of all governing factors may allow the development of more effective treatment strategies. Such studies may pave the way to the use of β-glucosidase inhibitors for halitosis clinical management.In this study, we studied the effects of cortisol and cortisone on the age-related decrease in locomotion in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and on the tolerance to heat stress at 35 °C and to oxidative stress induced by the exposure to 0.1% H2O2. Changes in mRNA expression levels of C. elegans genes related to stress tolerance were also analyzed. Cortisol treatment restored nematode movement following heat stress and increased viability under oxidative stress, but also shortened worm lifespan. Cortisone, a cortisol precursor, also restored movement after heat stress. Additionally, cortisol treatment increased mRNA expression of the hsp-12.6 and ***-3 genes. Furthermore, cortisol treatment failed to restore movement of daf-16-deficient mutants after heat stress, whereas cortisone failed to restore the movement of dhs-30-deficient mutants after heat stress. In conclusion, the results suggested that cortisol promoted stress tolerance via DAF-16 but shortened the lifespan, whereas cortisone promoted stress tolerance via DHS-30.
    Maternal immune activation has been implicated in the pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders caused by maternal infection. It has been suggested that the placental origin of inflammatory cytokines leads to neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the identity of the initial immune-activated site in the placenta, in response to maternal viral infection, is not clear.

    By cross-breeding male enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) transgenic **** with wild-type females, the placental tissues of maternal origin can be distinguished from those of paternal origin by EGFP expression. Using this method, at embryonic day (E) 12.5, dams were administered an intraperitoneal polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (poly [IC]) injection. We quantitatively analyzed the levels of phosphorylated interferon (IFN) regulatory factor 3 (pIRF3) in the placenta, and investigated the distribution of pIRF3 positive cells.

    We show that maternally derived decidual cells are the initial target of maternal poly (IC) through the toll-like receptor 3/TIR-domain-containing the adapter-inducing interferon-β signaling pathway. We also show that the expression of interferon-β was upregulated in the placenta after maternal injection with poly (IC).

    Sialic acids are widely distributed in nature and have biological relevance owing to their varied structural and functional roles. Immobilized neuraminidase can selectively remove terminal N-acetyl neuraminic acid from glycoproteins without altering the protein backbone while it can be easily removed from the reaction mixture avoiding sample contamination.   • Several mechanisms driving SARS-CoV-2 transmission remain unclear. Based on individual records of 1178 potential SARS-CoV-2 infectors and their 15,648 contacts in Hunan, China, we estimated key transmission parameters. The mean generation time was estimated to be 5.7 (median 5.5, IQR 4.5, 6.8) days, with infectiousness peaking 1.8 days before symptom onset, with 95% of transmission events occurring between 8.8 days before and 9.5 days after symptom onset. Most transmission events occurred during the pre-symptomatic phase (59.2%). SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility to infection increases with age, while transmissibility is not significantly different between age groups and between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Contacts in households and exposure to first-generation cases are associated with higher odds of transmission. Here, we use repeat airborne LiDAR surveys spanning the hot and dry 2015-16 El Niño Southern Oscillation event to measure canopy height growth across 3,300 ha of regenerating tropical forests spanning a logging intensity gradient in Malaysian Borneo. We show that the drought led to increased leaf shedding and branch fall. Short forest, regenerating after heavy logging, continued to grow despite higher evaporative demand, except when it was located close to oil palm plantations. Edge effects from the plantations extended over 300 metres into the forests. Forest growth on hilltops and slopes was particularly impacted by the combination of fragmentation and drought, but even riparian forests located within 40 m of oil palm plantations lost canopy height during the drought. This method leverages high spin-selectivity of cryogenic resonance excitation and flexibility of photoionization. We achieve an overall fidelity > 95% for the single-shot readout of an NV center electron spin in the presence of high strain and fast spin-flip process. With further improvements, this technique has the potential to achieve spin readout fidelity exceeding the fault-tolerant threshold, and may also find applications on integrated optoelectronic devices.The COVID-19 pandemic caused many governments to impose policies restricting social interactions. In the present review, we focus on the current understanding of mitochondrial apoptosis, dynamics and mitophagy in cell function, the implications for cell toxicity in response to sevoflurane, and their underlying potential mechanisms.Vascular calcification (VC) describes the pathophysiological phenotype of calcium apatite deposition within the vascular wall, leading to vascular stiffening and the loss of compliance. VC is never benign; the presence and severity of VC correlate closely with the risk of myocardial events and cardiovascular mortality in multiple at-risk populations such as patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction involving each of vascular wall constituents (endothelia and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs)) aggravates various vascular pathologies, including atherosclerosis and VC. However, few studies address the pathogenic role of mitochondrial dysfunction during the course of VC, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) seem to lie in the pathophysiologic epicenter. Superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), through its preferential localization to the mitochondria, stands at the forefront against mitochondrial ROS in VSMCs and thus potentially modifies the probability of VC initiation or progression. In this review, we will provide a literature-based summary regarding the relationship between SOD2 and VC in the context of VSMCs. Apart from the conventional wisdom of attenuating mitochondrial ROS, SOD2 has been found to affect mitophagy and the formation of the autophagosome, suppress JAK/STAT as well as PI3K/Akt signaling, and retard vascular senescence, all of which underlie the beneficial influences on VC exerted by SOD2. More importantly, we outline the therapeutic potential of a novel SOD2-targeted strategy for the treatment of VC, including an ever-expanding list of pharmaceuticals and natural compounds. Oxyberberine has strong potential for clinical usage since it showed strong anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiarrhythmic effects in various diseases. In the present study, we evaluated whether oxyberberine can inhibit lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced ALI in vivo and further evaluated the possible involvement of mitophagy in vitro by using A549 cells, a human lung epithelial cell line. Our in vivo study shows that oxyberberine significantly inhibited LPS-induced lung pathological injury and lung edema, as indicated by the changes in lung wet/dry ratio and total protein levels in the BALF in ****. Moreover, oxyberberine inhibited inflammation, as indicated by the changes of neutrophil accumulation and production of proinflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and IL-6 in both the lung and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in ALI ****. VC is never benign; the presence and severity of VC correlate closely with the risk of myocardial events and cardiovascular mortality in multiple at-risk populations such as patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction involving each of vascular wall constituents (endothelia and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs)) aggravates various vascular pathologies, including atherosclerosis and VC. However, few studies address the pathogenic role of mitochondrial dysfunction during the course of VC, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) seem to lie in the pathophysiologic epicenter. Superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), through its preferential localization to the mitochondria, stands at the forefront against mitochondrial ROS in VSMCs and thus potentially modifies the probability of VC initiation or progression. In this review, we will provide a literature-based summary regarding the relationship between SOD2 and VC in the context of VSMCs. Apart from the conventional wisdom of attenuating mitochondrial ROS, SOD2 has been found to affect mitophagy and the formation of the autophagosome, suppress JAK/STAT as well as PI3K/Akt signaling, and retard vascular senescence, all of which underlie the beneficial influences on VC exerted by SOD2. More importantly, we outline the therapeutic potential of a novel SOD2-targeted strategy for the treatment of VC, including an ever-expanding list of pharmaceuticals and natural compounds. Our in vivo study shows that oxyberberine significantly inhibited LPS-induced lung pathological injury and lung edema, as indicated by the changes in lung wet/dry ratio and total protein levels in the BALF in mice. Moreover, oxyberberine inhibited inflammation, as indicated by the changes of neutrophil accumulation and production of proinflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and IL-6 in both the lung and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in ALI mice. Scholarly publications by DNP authors expand the dissemination of knowledge and offer an avenue to improve health outcomes nationally and globally.The quality of dying and death is currently considered an objective to achieve at the end of life. The aim of this study is to analyze the quality of dying and death of advanced cancer patients in palliative care and its association with place of death and quality of care from the perspective of family caregivers. This is a cross-sectional study. The study sample included 72 family caregivers of advanced cancer patients in palliative care. For the evaluation of the quality of dying and death, the Spanish version of the Quality of Dying and Death Questionnaire was used. Quality of care was evaluated with the Palliative Care Outcome Scale. The mean (SD) total score on the Spanish version of the Quality of Dying and Death Questionnaire was 64.56 (20.97). The quality of dying and death was higher when the patients died at home, 70.45 (19.70), and it was positively correlated with quality of care (r = 0.61). Palliative care contributes to achieving a satisfactory quality of dying and death in Spanish advanced cancer patients. Other care tended to be carried out by relatives and HCPs, adapted based on a person's level of consciousness. When describing the effects on oral health, relatives and HCPs tended to focus on xerostomia, whereas patients provided detailed accounts denoting the psychological and social impact of oral symptoms. Perceptions of enablers and barriers to oral care differed between groups. Patients reported lack of access to professional dental care and patients' fatigue were the main barriers to oral care. Nevertheless, there is great scope for further research into good oral care practices identified in this study and possible implementation in other settings.

    A 13-year-old male patient with Joubert syndrome and mitochondrial disease underwent elective surgery to insert a continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis catheter. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with propofol, remifentanil, and rocuronium. An I-gel was inserted to secure the airway; however, the fitting did not work properly, so the patient was intubated. The operation was completed without any major problems, and the intubated patient was transferred to the intensive care unit.

This study aimed to compare the efficiency of two different methods of lifting the epiglottis during the visualization of glottis using video laryngoscopy in the same patient.

    This prospective study enrolled 60 patients who underwent general anesthesia with tracheal intubation. In each patient, glottic views were obtained by directly (group DE) and indirectly lifting the epiglottis (group IE). These two methods were compared using the modified Cormack and Lehane grade and the percentage of glottis opening (POGO) score as assessment parameters.

Spinal epidural hematoma is rare condition that can rapidly develop into severe neurologic deficits. We report on two patients who developed acute, large amounts of epidural hematoma without neurological deficits after transforaminal epidural steroid injection. After fluoroscopy guided aspiration for epidural hematoma was performed, neurological defects did not progress and the hematoma was shown to be absorbed on magnetic resonance imaging. These reports are believed to be the first of treating epidural hematoma occurring after transforaminal epidural steroid injection through non-surgical hematoma aspiration. If large amounts of epidural hematoma are not causing neurological issues, it can be aspirated until it is absorbed. Participants were 15 motorcyclist students studying in public health (6), nursing (4), dentistry (2), medicine (1), health education (1) and biochemistry (1). They were purposefully included in the study and sampling continued until data saturation. The main tool for data collection was deep semi-structured interviews with open answers which lasted for 20 to 60 minutes. Finally, 15 interviews were collected in this study.

    The five main categories (economic, family, socio-cultural, individual, and riding rules) were extracted from the data that each had a subclass.

These involve joints, skin, eyes and less commonly lungs and heart. Myocarditis may result from the toxic effect of drugs (ie, mesalazine) commonly used for the treatment of UC or due to infections (eg, Coxsackieviruses, enteroviruses, adenovirus). Here, we report a case of a 26-year old man affected by UC and complicated by two episodes of myocarditis. Both episodes occurred during two severe exacerbations of UC. However, in both cases the aetiology of myocarditis remains uncertain being ascribable to extraintestinal manifestation, drug toxicity or both.Understanding energy use is central to understanding an animal's physiological and behavioural ecology. The doubly labelled water (DLW) method is widely used to investigate energy expenditure in a range of taxa. Dynamic body acceleration (e.g. VeDBA) calculated from animal-borne accelerometers has been used to determine behavioural patterns, and is increasingly being used as a proxy for energy expenditure. Still its performance as a proxy for energy expenditure in free-ranging animals is not well established and requires validation against established methods. In the present study, the relationship between VeDBA and the at-sea metabolic rate calculated from DLW was investigated in little penguins (Eudyptula minor) using three approaches. Both in a simple correlation and activity-specific approaches were shown to be good predictors of at-sea metabolic rate. The third approach using activity-specific energy expenditure values obtained from literature did not accurately calculate the energy expended by individuals. However, all three approaches were significantly strengthened by the addition of mean horizontal travel speed. These results provide validation for the use of accelerometry as a proxy for energy expenditure and show how energy expenditure may be influenced by both individual behaviour and environmental conditions.
