  • Collective decision making is important for maximizing total benefits while preserving equality among individuals in the competitive multi-armed bandit (CMAB) problem, wherein multiple players try to gain higher rewards from multiple slot machines. The CMAB problem represents an essential aspect of applications such as resource management in social infrastructure. In a previous study, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that entangled photons can physically resolve the difficulty of the CMAB problem. This decision-making strategy completely avoids decision conflicts while ensuring equality. We show that an optimal mixture of entangled- and correlated-photon-based strategies exists depending on the dynamics of the reward environment as well as the difficulty of the given problem. Seven of 23 (30%) and 52 of 187 (28%) patients with hematologic cancer had respiratory failure or death among those who did and did not receive anti-CD20 therapy, respectively. CT images at total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV) of 541 former smokers and 59 healthy non-smokers from the cohort of the SubPopulations and Intermediate Outcome Measures in the COPD Study (SPIROMICS) were analyzed. TLC and RV images were registered to calculate the Jacobian (determinant) values for all the voxels in TLC images. 3D Regions of interest (ROIs) with two data channels of CT intensity and Jacobian value were randomly extracted from training images and were fed to the 3D CAE-FC model.

  • Results of two simulation studies indicate that the RCD graphical test has Type I error rate comparable to those of existing methods but with greater power.The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata, is a worldwide pest of agriculture able to use olfactory cues to locate habitat, food sources, mates and oviposition sites. The sensitivity of medfly olfaction has been exploited to develop olfactory-based attractants that are currently important tools for detection, control and eradication of its populations. Among these is Cera Trap® (BIOIBERICA, S.A.U.), a cost-effective bait. Here we used coupled gas chromatography/electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) approaches to characterize the medfly antennally-active compounds released by this lure. We identified GC peaks corresponding to chemicals belonging to six different classes including heterocyclic aromatic compounds, aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, esters, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and aromatic alcohols. We tested ten potential candidate volatiles belonging to these classes and predicted to be emitted by the lure and found that they were eliciting electroantennographic responses in medfly adults. These results will help in unravelling the physiological mechanisms of odor perception in both sexes, especially in relation to Cera Trap® attractant activity, which in the field has been shown to be female-specific. These findings and their developments will ultimately expand the toolbox for medfly control in the field.Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common and severe neurodegenerative disorder associated with a selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. The crucial role of oxidative stress and inflammation in PD onset and progression is evident. It has been proven that garlic extract (GE) protects the cells from oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. That is, we aimed to investigate if GE reveals protective features on the preclinical model of PD. The study has been designed to evaluate both preventive (GE administered before 6-OHDA injection) and therapeutic (GE administered after 6-OHDA injection) effects of GE on the animal model. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups including control, lesion, treatment I (received GE before 6-OHDA injection) and treatment II (received GE both before and after 6-OHDA injection). At the end of treatment, hanging, rotarod, open field and passive avoidance tests as well as immunohistochemistry were performed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of garlic against PD.   • Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrial cells normally limited to the lining of the uterus proliferate outside the uterine cavity and can cause pelvic pain and infertility. ARID1A levels are significantly reduced in the eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis. Uterine specific Arid1a knock-out **** were infertile due to loss of epithelial progesterone receptor (PGR) signaling. However, the functional association of ARID1A and PGR in endometriosis has not been studied. We examined the expression patterns and co-localization of ARID1A and PGR in eutopic endometrium from women with and without endometriosis using immunostaining and Western blot analysis. ARID1A and PGR proteins co-localized in the epithelium during the proliferative and the early secretory phases. Our immunoprecipitation analysis and proximity ligation assay (PLA) revealed physical interaction between ARID1A and PGR-A but not PGR-B in the mouse and human endometrium. ARID1A levels positively correlated with PGR levels in the eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis. Our results bring new perspectives on the molecular mechanisms involved in endometrial receptivity and progesterone resistance in endometriosis. The interrelationship between ARID1A and PGR may contribute to explaining the non-receptive endometrium in endometriosis-related infertility.
    Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used cancer chemotherapeutic drug with cardiotoxicity effect limiting its clinical use. DOX induced cardiotoxicity is mediated by oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage. Kininogen-1(KNG1) is an important pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant factor, and studies have found that it can aggravate lung and brain damage.     Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrial cells normally limited to the lining of the uterus proliferate outside the uterine cavity and can cause pelvic pain and infertility. ARID1A levels are significantly reduced in the eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis. Uterine specific Arid1a knock-out mice were infertile due to loss of epithelial progesterone receptor (PGR) signaling. However, the functional association of ARID1A and PGR in endometriosis has not been studied. We examined the expression patterns and co-localization of ARID1A and PGR in eutopic endometrium from women with and without endometriosis using immunostaining and Western blot analysis. ARID1A and PGR proteins co-localized in the epithelium during the proliferative and the early secretory phases. Our immunoprecipitation analysis and proximity ligation assay (PLA) revealed physical interaction between ARID1A and PGR-A but not PGR-B in the mouse and human endometrium. ARID1A levels positively correlated with PGR levels in the eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis. Our results bring new perspectives on the molecular mechanisms involved in endometrial receptivity and progesterone resistance in endometriosis. The interrelationship between ARID1A and PGR may contribute to explaining the non-receptive endometrium in endometriosis-related infertility.   • This study introduces the concept of value-expressive communication and examines its relationship with behavioral intent. Value-expressive communication is conceptualized as the verbal output of a value-expressive attitude. Value-expressive communication about exercise is examined in relationship to strength of religious faith, exercise attitudes, communication frequency, and intentions to exercise among a sample of self-identified Christians. The data indicate a significant interaction between value-expressive communication and communication frequency explains significant variance in exercise intentions. Interact to and exercise attitudes is significantly associated with intentions to exercise. Suggestions for using value-expressive communication in health communication research and practice are discussed.
    The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is an effective intervention to support maternal practices around breastfeeding. However, adherence of hospitals to the Baby-Friendly 10 Steps, as determined from the perspective of women participating in the United States Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, has not been assessed.

    (1) To compare maternal perceptions about maternity practices in Baby-Friendly Hospitals and non-Baby-Friendly Hospitals; (2) to evaluate the associations between degree of exposure to the Baby-Friendly 10 Steps and breastfeeding practices through the first 6 months; and (3) to evaluate whether the receipt of specific Steps was associated with breastfeeding practices through 6 months.

    COVID-19 has a wide range of symptoms reported, which may vary from very mild cases (even asymptomatic) to deadly infections. Identifying high mortality risk individuals infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus through a prediction instrument that uses simple clinical and analytical parameters at admission can help clinicians to focus on treatment efforts in this group of patients.

    Data was obtained retrospectively from the electronic medical record of all COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the Albacete University Hospital Complex until July 2020. Patients were split into two a generating and a validating cohort. Clinical, demographical and laboratory variables were included. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to select variables associated with in-hospital mortality in the generating cohort. A numerical and subsequently a categorical score according to mortality were constructed (A mortality from 0% to 5%; B from 5% to 15%; C from 15% to 30%; D from 30% to 50%; E greater than 50%). These scores worrelation between clinical admission parameters and in-hospital mortality for COVID-19 patients. This correlation is used to develop a model to assist physicians in the emergency department in the COVID-19 treatment decision-making process.

    Anonymized specialized care admission records registered between 1 Jan 2011 and 31 Dec 2017 were extracted from a Spanish nationwide hospital discharge database.

    Records included corresponded to 16,657 patients, of which 50.62% were male. In nearly 38% of all admissions secondary malignant tumors were registered, principally tumors in the lymph nodes. In-hospital incidence of melanoma was 67.5 and 58.2 per 100,000 males and females, respectively, in the study period (2011-2017), with a decreasing tendency measured after the year 2014. Mortality increased with patients' age and over time in patients over 75 years of age. In-hospital mortality was 7.73% for males and 5.29% for female patients, and was principally associated to metastatic tumors, principally in the lungs, liver and brain. Mean length of hospital stay was 4.36 days, with a readmission rate of 6.93% and a 15.70% of urgent admissions. The mean annual direct medical cost per patient was €4175, increasing between 2014 and 2017.

    The increasing in-hospital incidence of melanoma appeared to reverse in 2014, as did the increasing mortality rate measured in older males. The shift in melanoma in-hospital incidence could respond to the increasing trend to treat patients in primary care settings.     We sought to determine whether an accessory maxillary ostium (AMO) is a congenital or acquired condition and we investigated concomitant sinus pathologies associated with this structure.

    Paranasal sinus CT examinations of individuals aged ≥13 years and <13 years were compared retrospectively. In total, 552 sinuses of 276 patients aged ≥13 years (Group 1) and 284 maxillary sinuses of 142 children aged <13 years (Group 2) were evaluated. Patients were classified as AMO-positive or -negative. The following features were evaluated in Group 1 AMO presence, mucus retention cysts, mucosal thickening, sinusitis of the maxillary sinus, nasal septum deviation, concha hypertrophy, concha bullosa, primary ostium obstruction, uncinate process atelectasis, paradox concha, Agger nasi and Haller cells, and sinus hypoplasia. The effects of the non-thermal US-CD, hot-air drying (HAD), and freeze drying (FD) on the changes in rehydration ratio, pH, titratable acidity, water activity, color, glass transition temperature, texture, antioxidant capacity, total phenols, and microstructures of the samples were evaluated. The moisture content of the apple slices reached below 5% (w.b.) after 75-80 min of US-CD, which was about 45% less than that of the HAD method. Checking of performance has been carried out by the assessment of the different operating and process conditions, assessing in particular the impact of the ultrasound treatment before and after the malaxation phase on performance indicators of the continuous olive oil plant (plant extractability, olive paste rheological characteristic) and on selected chemical properties of the olive oil extracted (quality parameters, antioxidant content, and volatile profiles).     Over a 7-month period, Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) members of a central London Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) identified stroke patients who they believed would benefit from neuropsychology input, and categorised the nature of neuropsychology intervention required. We examined the demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients identified and the type of intervention required.

    23% of patients (101/448) were identified as requiring neuropsychology input. Patients deemed to require input were younger, more likely to be male and more functionally disabled than those not requiring input. Cognitive assessment was the main identified need (93%) followed by mood (29%) and family support (9%). 30% of patients required two types of intervention. The non-thermal ultrasound contact drying (US-CD) was performed in the presence of an air stream (26-40 °C) flowing over product surface to remove mist or vapor produced by the ultrasound treatment. An energy resolution of 44 meV is demonstrated for the experimental setup, close to the theoretically achievable minimum resolution. The analyzer crystals and detector are mounted on a curved-rail system, allowing quick and reliable changes in scattering angle without breaking vacuum. The entire setup is designed for operation at 10 Hz, the same repetition rate as the high-power lasers available at the instrument and the fundamental repetition rate of the European XFEL. Among other measurements, it is envisioned that this setup will allow studies of the dynamics of highly transient laser generated states of matter.

    Chronic inflammation is estimated to contribute to approximately 25% of human cancers. Inflammation can be induced by chronic mechanical irritation which can lead to oral pre-cancer and oral cancer. Though many studies have been conducted to identify the genetic damage in oral cancer or dysplastic stages, no study has been conducted so far on early detection of genetic damage in healthy individuals presenting with sharp teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue.

    The study is aimed at analyzing the genetic damage (micronuclei) in healthy individuals with sharp teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue causing chronic mechanical irritation.

    The study group included 75 clinically healthy individuals with sharp teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue and 25 clinically healthy individuals with normal teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue as a control group. Brush samples of epithelial cells were collected, then spread over clean glass slide and fixed in 100% alcohol, stained with rapid PAP and analyzed under the light microscope. The exfoliated cells were examined to detect micronuclei.

    This cross-sectional study aimed at exploring possible factors that are associated with psychological distress among HD patients and testing its relation to spirituality.

    HD patients were recruited from six dialysis units in Greece. Psychological distress was assessed using the scale Symptom Check List 90-R and spirituality using the Facit Sp-12 questionnaire. In addition, a special design questionnaire regarding demographic, social, and clinical characteristic was administrated.

Though many studies have been conducted to identify the genetic damage in oral cancer or dysplastic stages, no study has been conducted so far on early detection of genetic damage in healthy individuals presenting with sharp teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue. The study is aimed at analyzing the genetic damage (micronuclei) in healthy individuals with sharp teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue causing chronic mechanical irritation. The study group included 75 clinically healthy individuals with sharp teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue and 25 clinically healthy individuals with normal teeth in contact with the lateral border of the tongue as a control group. Brush samples of epithelial cells were collected, then spread over clean glass slide and fixed in 100% alcohol, stained with rapid PAP and analyzed under the light microscope. The exfoliated cells were examined to detect micronuclei. This cross-sectional study aimed at exploring possible factors that are associated with psychological distress among HD patients and testing its relation to spirituality. HD patients were recruited from six dialysis units in Greece. Psychological distress was assessed using the scale Symptom Check List 90-R and spirituality using the Facit Sp-12 questionnaire. In addition, a special design questionnaire regarding demographic, social, and clinical characteristic was administrated. According to the results, factors such age, gender, marital status and area of residence are associated with psychological distress, while dimensions of spirituality such Meaning in Life and Peace can have a positive influence on psychological distress. This study highlights the vital role of spirituality, which can act as a mechanism for managing stressful situations.

More specifically, the male professors in Architecture and Judicial & Social Sciences, younger and older than 40, possessed a higher level, as compared to the other fields. For the female professors, the highest level was found once again in Judicial and Social Sciences, in this case for both age ranges, without a clear trend found for the rest of the fields. For each dimension of the DigCompEdu instrument, the level of competence follows the same trend with respect to the overall level. More research is recommended to validate these preliminary results, as well as the development of training lines of action that are specific and adapted to each field of knowledge.
    The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant changes and restrictions to neonatal care. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of these changes on neonatal nurses globally.

    We conducted a thematic analysis on written reflections by neonatal nurses worldwide, exploring their experiences of COVID-19. Twenty-two reflections were analysed from eleven countries.

    Thematic analysis revealed 4 main themes relating to the nurses' role 1) protector 2) challenges to human quality of care 3) vulnerability and 4) resilience. The measures taken as protector were described as compromising the human qualities of care fundamental to their role. This tension, together with other new challenges, heightened feelings of vulnerability. Concurrently, nurses identified role resilience, including resourcefulness and peer support, which allowed them to navigate the global pandemic.

    By identifying global challenges and strategies to overcome these, neonatal nurses may be better equipped as the pandemic continues. The reflections underscore the importance of family integrated care and the tension created when it is compromised.

SARS-CoV-2 encodes a small hydrophobic envelope (E) protein that mediates envelope formation, budding, replication, and release of progeny viruses from the host. Through this study, the SARS-CoV-2 E protein is studied for its open and closed state and focused in identifying antiviral herbs used in traditional medicine practices for COVID-19 infections. In this study using computational tools, we docked the shortlisted phytochemicals with the envelope protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the results hint that these compounds interact with the pore-lining residues. The molecular level understanding of the open state is considered and the active inhibitors from the phytochemicals of Ayurvedic medicinal plants from Withania somnifera. We have thus identified a potential phytochemical compound that directly binds with the pore region of the E protein and thereby blocks its channel activity. Blocking the ion channel activity of E protein is directly related to the inhibition of virus replication. The study shows encouraging results on the usage of these phytochemicals in the treatment/management of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
    CD105 (Endoglin) is a receptor of the transforming growth factor-Beta (TGF- β) superfamily. It is expressed in angiogenic endothelial cells and is considered a powerful marker of angiogenesis and a potential main player in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases as well as tumor progression. CD105 expression was correlated with poor prognosis in many types of solid malignancies, however, its influence on hematological neoplasms is still an area of interest.

    To assess the flow-cytometric expression of CD105 in childhood B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and its relation to disease response after the induction chemotherapy.

    Eighty children newly diagnosed with B-ALL were screened for flow-cytometric expression of CD105 at time of diagnosis, then they were followed up to detect their response to induction therapy.

    CD105 was expressed in 41.2% of B-ALL patients. Higher expression of CD105 was observed in high and very high-risk groups. The multivariate analysis considered CD105 positivity as an independent prognostic marker for response to induction therapy. Values higher than 2.5 Specific fluorescence indices (SFIs) and 35% expression were sensitive predictors to induction failure.

    The Ostomy Adjustment Scale (OAS), which consists of an overall sum score along with 34 single-item scores, has been frequently used to measure self-reported adjustment to life with an ostomy. However, it is unknown whether the OAS can be divided into meaningful thematic subscales that may make it easier to administer and to apply in a clinical feedback system.

    The purpose of this study was to specify thematic OAS subscales and evaluate their psychometric properties.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted with 302 patients across Norway having colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy. The OAS items were divided into different subscales by expert nurses and patients based on clinical and theoretical considerations. The overall structural validity of this analysis of the OAS was examined using robust confirmatory factor analysis. We evaluated the overall goodness of fit using the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), the comparative fit index (CFI) and the Tucker-Lewis index (TLI). Factor loadings from the confirmatory factor analysis were used to calculate composite reliability values for the new OAS scales.

Macula appeared thin and atrophic. An intravitreal injection of 0.05 mg/0.1 ml bevacizumab was given to the right eye followed by Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation. Assessment of her brother revealed similar posterior segment changes. A subsequent urine analysis showed proteinuria and high albumin to creatinine ratio. Next-generation sequencing for LAMB2 gene revealed a homozygous c.4573 + 1 G > A variant confirming the diagnosis of Pierson syndrome.Conclusion This case expands our knowledge on retinal ischemia in the setting of Pierson syndrome. Overall, senior elite male players were stronger than younger-aged players. Forwards were stronger in extension than any other directions assessed, and were generally stronger and possessed larger necks and greater cross-sectional areas when compared to backs. Implementation of isometric exercise routines in professional players was reported to improve neck strength in all directions. There were no studies evaluating the incidence of concussion and neck strength or neck strengthening strategies in Rugby Union.
