Sleep duration was measured by Actigraphy and caffeine intake was self-reported in sleep logs. Three analytic strategies were used. The average sleep duration and the average caffeine intake were not significantly correlated. Multilevel regressions using daytime caffeine intake to predict night-time sleep, and using night-time sleep to predict next day caffeine intake, also did not detect any significant effect. Then dynamical systems analysis was performed, where the daily change rate and change tendency of caffeine and sleep were estimated, and the relationship among these momentums was examined. Results revealed a significant effect of sleep duration on the change tendency of caffeine use a shorter sleep duration predicted a stronger tendency to consume caffeine, and this phenomenon was only found in middle-aged adults (aged 35-55 years) not in older adults (aged 55+). This study did not detect any effect of daily caffeine intake on sleep duration, implying that habitual use of caffeine in real life may not coincide with laboratory findings, and that using caffeine to compensate for sleep loss is the habit of middle-aged adults, not the elderly.     Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019, limited studies have investigated the histopathologic findings of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2).

    This study was conducted on 31 deceased patients who were hospitalized for COVID-19 in a tertiary hospital in Tehran, Iran. A total of 52 postmortem tissue biopsy samples were obtained from the lungs and liver of decedents. Clinical characteristics, laboratory data, and microscopic features were evaluated. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay for SARS-CoV-2 was performed on specimens obtained from nasopharyngeal swabs and tissue biopsies.

    The median age of deceased patients was 66 years (range, 30-87 years) and 25 decedents (81 %) were male. The average interval from symptom onset to death was 13 days (range, 6-34 days). On histopathologic examination of the lung specimens, diffuse alveolar damage and thrombotic microangiopathy were the most common findings (80 % and 60 %, respectively). Liver specimens mainly showed macrovesicular steatosis, portal lymphoplasmacytic inflammation and passive congestion. No definitive viral inclusions were observed in any of the specimens. In addition, 92 % of lung tissue samples tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR.

Previous studies demonstrate that childhood trauma might either enhance, preserve, or reduce mental states recognition in selected at-risk populations. The current study investigates whether alcohol use disorder (AUD) status moderates the association between childhood trauma, alexithymia, and mental states recognition in a treatment-seeking AUD sample and non-AUD healthy adults.

    Data comes from 255 individuals participating in an ongoing project that compares emotional and behavioral functioning of patients treated in an inpatient setting for AUD and a comparison sample of 172 healthy controls (HCs). Mental states recognition was measured using a computerized version of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task (RMET). The presence of childhood trauma was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Alexithymia was measured with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Demographic information, as well as alcohol drinking and psychopathological symptoms were assessed. A moderated mediation model was estimated whereby alexithymia was included as a mediator in the association between childhood trauma and RMET performance, with AUD diagnosis status moderating the link between alexithymia and RMET performance.

    Cancer is a major burden of disease and alcohol consumption is one of the major risk factors of cancer. This study aimed to estimate the economic burden of cancer types attributable to alcohol consumption in the Republic of Korea.

    This study estimates the direct and indirect costs of cancer types attributable to alcohol consumption by applying cost-of-illness methods using the human capital approach and prevalence-based estimates. Claims data from the National Health Insurance Service for 2011-2016 were used.

    In Korea, there were 297,304 alcohol consumption-related cancer cases, of which 14,186 (4.8 %) were attributable to alcohol consumption in 2016. From 2011-2016, the socioeconomic burden of cancer attributable to alcohol consumption in Korea has increased steadily, even considering inflation adjustment. The total economic burden of cancer attributable to alcohol consumption in 2016 in Korea was approximately $476 million, of which $119 million were direct costs and $357 million were indirect costs. According to our analysis of annual cost per patient, the average costs were $37,432 for men and $11,930 for women.

Online cryptomarkets are becoming increasingly popular among people who use substances due to their perceived anonymity, ease of use, and reduced risk of violence compared to traditional face-to-face dealers. We examined the diversity of substances marketed for use in a personal vaporiser on these marketplaces.

    Vaping related listings were extracted from three online cryptomarkets ('Agartha', 'Cryptonia', and 'Tochka') using The Onion Router browser. Data collection occurred between October and November 2019.

    We identified 1929 listings from 201 unique sellers. The top product on Agartha, Cryptonia, and Tochka were vape cartridges prefilled with the e-liquid (70.4 %, 39.4 %, 52.3 % respectively). The most common substance in these products was cannabis oil (96.1 %, 82.1 %, 87.8 %), followed by synthetic cannabinoids (3.7 %, 9.7 %, 9.8 %) and psychedelic substances (0.2 %, 6.4 %, 1.2 %). Materials and Methods A total of 359 serum samples were collected from 55 backyard chickens and tested using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits to determine the seroprevalence of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), influenza type A, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS). Molecular prevalence of NDV, IBV, low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) H9N2, MG, and MS was carried out on swab, and tissue samples collected from 55 backyard flocks and 11 commercial broiler flocks suffered from respiratory infections using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription-PCR. Results Seroprevalence of NDV, IBV, Influenza type A virus, MG, and MS in chicken backyard flocks was 56.4%, 50.9%, 12.7%, 14.5%, and 3.6%, respectively. Specific antibodies against one or more rry pathogens with elevated mortality. Mixed infection of E. coli and MG reported in 9.1% of broiler flock. MG was detected in 14.5% of backyard flocks and 9.1% of broiler flocks while MS was detected only in 3.6% of backyard chickens mixed with E. coli, and other viruses. The aim of this study was to assess the use of antibiotic residues in raw milk from the dairy pool of Niamey in three farms (Toukounous, Kirkissoye, and Niamey) and three collection centers (Hamdallaye, Kollo, and Say). Materials and Methods A total of 359 serum samples were collected from 55 backyard chickens and tested using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits to determine the seroprevalence of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), influenza type A, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS). Molecular prevalence of NDV, IBV, low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) H9N2, MG, and MS was carried out on swab, and tissue samples collected from 55 backyard flocks and 11 commercial broiler flocks suffered from respiratory infections using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription-PCR. Results Seroprevalence of NDV, IBV, Influenza type A virus, MG, and MS in chicken backyard flocks was 56.4%, 50.9%, 12.7%, 14.5%, and 3.6%, respectively. Specific antibodies against one or more rry pathogens with elevated mortality. Mixed infection of E. coli and MG reported in 9.1% of broiler flock. MG was detected in 14.5% of backyard flocks and 9.1% of broiler flocks while MS was detected only in 3.6% of backyard chickens mixed with E. coli, and other viruses. Conclusion Our results confirm that mixed infections are more commonly prevalent and associated with dramatic exacerbation in clinical outcomes than a single infection. Bidirectional synergistic interaction between these concurrently interacted respiratory pathogens explains the severe clinical impact and high mortality rate. The high prevalence of IBV (either as a single or combined infection) with LPAIV H9N2 and/or E. coli, in spite of intensive use of commercial vaccines, increases the need for revising vaccination programs and the application of standard biosecurity measures. This article develops two corresponding insights from an interdisciplinary project in a New Zealand agricultural research organization. First, we expand on a recent Royal Society Open Science journal article (van der Bles et al. 2019 Royal Society Open Science6, 181870 (doi10.1098/rsos.181870)) and suggest a threefold conceptual framework to describe direct, indirect and contextual uncertainties associated with biophysical models. Second, we reflect on the process of developing this framework to highlight challenges to successful collaboration and the importance of a deeper engagement with interdisciplinarity. This includes resolving often unequal disciplinary standings and the need for early collaborative problem framing. We propose that both insights are complementary and informative to researchers and practitioners in the field of modelling uncertainty as well as to those interested in interdisciplinary environmental research generally. The article concludes by outlining limitations of interdisciplinary research and a shift towards transdisciplinarity that also includes non-scientists. Such a shift is crucial to holistically address uncertainties associated with biophysical modelling and to realize the full potential of agricultural digitalization.The persistent increase of artificial light emissions is causing a progressive brightening of the night sky in most regions of the world. This process is a threat for the long-term sustainability of the scientific and educational activity of ground-based astronomical observatories operating in the optical range. Huge investments in building, scientific and technical workforce, equipment and maintenance can be at risk if the increasing light pollution levels hinder the capability of carrying out the top-level scientific observations for which these key scientific infrastructures were built. Light pollution has other negative consequences, as e.g. biodiversity endangering and the loss of the starry sky for recreational, touristic and preservation of cultural heritage. The traditional light pollution mitigation approach is based on imposing conditions on the photometry of individual sources, but the aggregated effects of all sources in the territory surrounding the observatories are seldom addressed in the regulations. We propose that this approach shall be complemented with a top-down, ambient artificial skyglow immission limits strategy, whereby clear limits are established to the admissible deterioration of the night sky above the observatories. We describe the general form of the indicators that can be employed to this end, and develop linear models relating their values to the artificial emissions across the territory. This approach can be easily applied to other protection needs, like e.g. to protect nocturnal ecosystems, and it is expected to be useful for making informed decisions on public lighting, in the context of wider spatial planning projects.Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a supreme environmental problem, and levels of this toxic metalloid must be strictly monitored by a portable, sensitive and selective analytical device. For the integration system, the fluorescence emissive peak of Cu nanoclusters at 600 nm decreased gradually with increasing As(III) addition. Meanwhile, the fluorescence colour also changed from orange to colourless, and the detection limit was determined as 2.93 nM (0.22 ppb) in a wide detection range. The interfering ions also cannot influence the detection selectivity of As(III). Furthermore, the portable paper sensors based on Cu nanoclusters were fabricated for visual detection of As(III) in groundwater. The quantitative determination of As(III) in natural groundwater has also been accomplished with the aid of a common smartphone.     Differential diagnosis of nonadenomatous sellar masses causing hypopituitarism is still a challenge. Among these masses, growing evidence has demonstrated that primary pituitary lymphoma is a specific and emerging entity. The aim of our study was to describe our experience with a case of primary pituitary lymphoma and to perform a review of the available literature.

    We searched relevant databases up to March 2020, identifying 36 suitable articles basing on inclusion criteria (primary pituitary lymphoma in adult immunocompetent subjects). Overall, 43 cases were included in the review, adding a new case diagnosed and treated in our hospital. Epidemiologic data, clinical presentation, hormonal status, radiologic findings, pathology, treatment, and outcome were extracted.

    Mean age at diagnosis was 58.9 years, without gender difference. Symptoms related to mass were common (52.3%), in particular cranial nerve palsy (70.5%), headache (56.8%), and alteration in visual field (40.9%). Impaired hormonal status waa heterogeneous pattern, so a collaboration between endocrinologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and hematologists is desirable.
    The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of hospital readmissions. The goal of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in the rates of 30-day and 365-day hospital readmissions between diabetic patients who, upon their discharge, received diabetes care in a standard primary care setting and those who received their care in a specialized multidisciplinary diabetes program.

    This was a randomized controlled prospective study.

    One hundred and ninety two consecutive patients were recruited into the study, 95 (49%) into standard care (control group) and 97 (51%) into a multidisciplinary diabetes program (intervention group). The 30-day overall hospital readmission rates (including both emergency department and hospital readmissions) were 19% in the control group and 7% in the intervention group (P = .02). The 365-day overall hospital readmission rates were 38% in the control group and 14% in the intervention group (P = .0002).

    Transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) is a first-line treatment for Cushing disease (CD). However, a subset of patients with CD have no visible adenoma on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and whether MRI results affect surgical outcomes is controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the surgical outcomes of CD patients with negative MRI findings to those of patients with positive MRI findings.

    The clinical features and outcomes of CD patients who underwent TSS between January 2000 and July 2019 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital were collected from medical records. The clinical, endocrinologic, histopathologic, surgical outcomes, and a minimum 12-month follow-up of 125 consecutive CD patients with negative MRI findings were compared with those of 1,031 consecutive CD patients with MRI-visible adenomas.

    The total remission rate was 73.3% after TSS, and 11.8% of patients experienced recurrence. Of 1,031 patients with MRI-visible adenomas, postoperative remission was achieved in 762 patients (73.9%) observed in the patients with positive MRI findings (all P<.05). In addition, the major perioperative complications, including intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage, hypopituitarism, and transient diabetes insipidus, were not related to the MRI results (all P>.05).

  • Ganglion cysts are benign cystic tumors of musculoskeletal structures which have variable clinical presentations, however, compression neuropathies due to ganglion cyst are **** less common in the lower extremity and only a couple of cases have been described in the literature. Hence, in the current case report, we describe a patient with a giant ganglion cyst causing peroneal nerve palsy which was managed surgically.

    A 50-year-old female presented with a 2-month history of progressive left foot drop with a gradual development of swelling over the left fibular head. Imaging suggested ganglion cyst-induced peroneal nerve palsy. Initial conservative treatment failure warranted surgical excision which confirmed extraneural origin on histopathological examination. An immediate clinical improvement was observed postoperatively and full recovery occurred within 6 months. There was no recurrence at 2 years follow up.

    The ganglion cyst-induced compression neuropathies are uncommon in lower limbs, especially in a skeletally mature person. Our case was an extraneural cyst which is the rare comparatively. Here, we investigated the association between LOH severity and growth outcomes in premature infants. Medical records of premature infants born at ≤32 weeks of gestation were reviewed. Characteristics and growth parameters were compared between the two groups. A total of 102 premature infants with LOH were included. Gestational age ([GA] 27.7 vs. 29.5 weeks, <0.001) and birth weight (1.04 vs. 1.34 kg, <0.001) were significantly lower in the severe group. GA was a risk factor of severe LOH (odds ratio [OR], 1.328, =0.022), and severe LOH affected the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (OR, 2.950, =0.039) and led to a poor developmental outcome (OR, 9.339, =0.049). Growth parameters at birth were lower in the severe group, and a lower GA and sepsis negatively affected changes in growth for 3 years after adjustment for time. However, severe LOH was not related to growth changes in premature infants. Severe LOH influenced the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and developmental outcomes. The primary endpoint was the number of children with normal stool consistency during the treatment duration. A total of 46 children (aged 3.6 months to 12 years) with acute gastroenteritis that started less than 48 hours prior to their visit at a hospital-based emergency department were included in this prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. All children were treated with oral rehydration solution and placebo (n=20) or the test product (n=26). Significantly more children had a normal stool consistency on days 1 and 2 in the probiotic group 5 children (20%) on day 1 in the probiotic group compared with none in the placebo group ( =0.046). On day 2, 11 children in the probiotic group (46%) and 3 (16%) in the placebo group ( =0.024) had a normal stool consistency. The mean duration of diarrhea was shorter in the probiotic group compared with that in the placebo group (3.04±1.36 vs. 4.20±1.34 days) ( =0.018). The test product was shown to normalize stool consistency significantly more rapidly than the placebo. These data confirm the findings from a previous study in a larger group of children performed in a primary healthcare setting.   • The following article shows how a simple construction of a hybrid flow battery can be realised with medical technology materials. The implementation of this future-oriented topic is an example of a curricular innovation and should already be included in school curricula, since future generations will have to deal intensively with the energy transition (not only in Germany) and renewable energies. An electrolyte based on ink cartridges was used to motivate the pupils. The use of this 'everyday chemical' creates a real life reference for the students in the classroom, which can increase the popularity of chemistry teaching.Electrosynthesis is frequently presented as an intrinsically sustainable, safe and efficient method. While this is indeed often the case, this assessment cannot be easily generalized, as a number of challenges need to be addressed on the way to more efficient and truly sustainable processes. These challenges comprise the necessity for employing large amounts of supporting electrolyte additives along with the concomitant separation and waste issues. A further problem is the kinetic inhibition of the heterogeneous electron exchange, which in many instances leads to a decreased selectivity and an increased energy consumption ( 'overpotential' ). Another challenge is the apparent restriction of electrosynthesis to redox reactions, which seems to exclude important redox-neutral processes such as rearrangements, cycloadditions and substitutions from the scope of applications. Herein, catalytic approaches and electrolyte concepts are presented, which can help to overcome the abovementioned issues. This review will give a concise outline for radical processes involving boron-ate complexes which trigger a subsequent anionotropic rearrangement.The synthesis of complex molecules via radical reactions involving carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds has become a very successful approach. Radical chemistry has long been dominated by the use of tin-based reagents. Those strongly contributed to the development of the field, allowing one to achieve spectacular transformations, most of which being difficult or impossible to achieve under ionic conditions, and giving access to invaluable kinetics data that paved the way for the development of improved protocols and the design of new synthetic strategies. However, tin reagents and tin byproducts are often toxic and they proved to make purification steps sometimes tedious. In this context, tin-free methods have progressively gained in interest. This short review aims at providing the reader with alternative methods employing C-H bonds in place of the classical alkyl halides to generate, via an intermolecular hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), the radical species. Examples of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation using this type of C-H bond activation approach will be provided, from early reports to the more recent developments.This review focuses on recent developments from our laboratory in the field of radical reactions mediated by the archetypal reductive single electron transfer (SET) reagent, SmI₂. Namely, we have expanded the scope of reducible carbonyl moieties to esters and amides and have exploited the resultant ketyl radicals in radical cascade reactions that generate unprecedented scaffolds. Moreover, we have taken the first steps to address the long-standing challenges of catalysis and chiral ligand control associated with the reagent.The degenerative xanthate addition transfer to alkenes allows the synthesis of a broad range of protected, and in some cases enantiopure, α, β, and γ-amino acids, including proline and pipecolic derivatives, as well as fluorinated congeners and β-lactams. The radical addition furnishes naturally latent mercapto-α-amino acids that are ideally equipped for native chemical ligation. Most of the amino acid structures accessible rapidly by this chemistry would otherwise require tedious multi-step syntheses.We examined the size, content, and use of evaluative lexis by 26 English monolingual and 20 Spanish-English bilingual 30-month-old children in interaction with their mothers. We extracted the evaluative words, defined as words referring to cognition, volition, or emotion. Controlling for overall vocabulary skills as measured by the MacArthur-Bates inventories, monolinguals had a larger evaluative lexicon than the bilinguals' Spanish evaluative lexicon, but no difference was found between monolinguals' and bilinguals' English evaluative lexicons. There were differences between the monolinguals and bilinguals in the distribution of evaluative words across semantic categories English monolingual children used more words pertaining to volition and cognition and talked more about volition than the Spanish-English bilingual children. These results suggest that the development of evaluative lexicons is influenced by cultural differences, and consequently, bilingual children, who are also bicultural, follow a different developmental path in both languages from the path followed by their monolingual peers.

  • PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Annona muricata is among the edible fruits in the world with reported nutritional as well as medicinal values. The anticancer activity of the leaves and the fruits have been reported. Its ability to inhibit carbohydrate digesting enzymes and absorption and enhancing muscle glucose uptake as well as protection of pancreatic β-cell from oxidative damage further support its reported antidiabetic properties. A. muricata provided a cheap and alternative source of nutraceuticals, which could be further exploited as therapeutic strategy for the treatment of postprandial hyperglycemia in T2D. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.RNA-protein interactions are the crucial basis for many steps of bacterial gene expression, including post-transcriptional control by small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs). In stark contrast to recent progress in the analysis of Gram-negative bacteria, knowledge about RNA-protein complexes in Gram-positive species remains scarce. Here, we used the Grad-seq approach to draft a comprehensive landscape of such complexes in Streptococcus pneumoniae, in total determining the sedimentation profiles of ~ 88% of the transcripts and ~ 62% of the proteins of this important human pathogen. Analysis of in-gradient distributions and subsequent tag-based protein capture identified interactions of the exoribonuclease Cbf1/YhaM with sRNAs that control bacterial competence for DNA uptake. Unexpectedly, the nucleolytic activity of Cbf1 stabilizes these sRNAs, thereby promoting their function as repressors of competence. Overall, these results provide the first RNA/protein complexome resource of a Gram-positive species and illustrate how this can be utilized to identify new molecular factors with functions in RNA-based regulation of virulence-relevant pathways. © 2020 The Authors. Associations between both constructs have been reported over the last decade, but have ranged widely in magnitude to date. The present study is the first publication to synthesize existing literature and provide a meta-analytic estimate of the attachment-paranoia relationship. METHODS A systematic search of studies available up to January 2019 was conducted using Embase, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, OpenGrey, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. This yielded 26 studies which met inclusion criteria (N = 10,539; mean age range 16-47; 45% male). Data were analysed using random effects models with restricted maximum likelihood variance estimator. Age and sex were examined as moderators in meta-regressions. RESULTS Paranoia was significantly associated with attachment anxiety (r = .38; 95% CI 0.32, 0.44; p  less then  .0001; I2  = 88%; k = 26) and attachment avoidance (r = .24; 95% CI 0.18, 0.29; p  less then  .0001; I2  = 79%; k = 26). The strength of these associations did not differ between clinical and non-clinical participant samples. Neither age nor sex moderated identified relationships. Autophagy, characterized by the presence of autophagosomes and autolysosomes, was evident in the early stages of degeneration in non-ciliated, ciliated and mitochondrial cells. The intermediate and advanced stages of regression in non-ciliated as well as mitochondrial cells occurred via apoptosis, while both apoptotic and necrotic ciliated cells were observed during the later stages of degeneration. Three full desolvation-resolvation cycles with the concomitant change of the host molecules do not damage the single crystals. More importantly, the Fe 4 M 2 molecules constitute a unique example where the presence of the guests directly affects the pressure-induced thermal spin crossover (SCO) phenomenon occurring at the Fe II centers. KGaA, Weinheim.Recently, halobenzoquinones (HBQs) disinfection byproducts, including 2,6-dichloro-1, 4-benzoquinone (DCBQ), 2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (DCMBQ), 2,3,6-trichloro-1, 4-benzoquinone (TCBQ), and 2,6-dibromobenzoquinone (DBBQ), have been of increasing concern due to their reported ability to induce oxidative damage, and thus genotoxicity. However, data on the risk of genotoxicity due to chromosomal damage by HBQs are still scarce. Here, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the four HBQs were assessed using human cell lines (bladder cancer 5637 cells, colon carcinoma Caco-2 cells, and gastric ****803 cells). The four HBQs exhibited significant concentration-response relationships in all the three cell lines. Cytotoxicity of DCBQ, DCMBQ, TCBQ, and DBBQ, represented by the 50% concentration of inhibition (IC50 ) values, were 80.8-99.5, 41.0-57.6, 122.1-146.6, and 86.9-93.8 μM, respectively. The lowest effective concentrations for cellular micronuclei induction in the cell lines by DCBQ, DCMBQ, TCBQ, and DBBQ were 50-75, 20-41.

Here, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the four HBQs were assessed using human cell lines (bladder cancer 5637 cells, colon carcinoma Caco-2 cells, and gastric MGC-803 cells).     Five-week old, C57BL/6J **** were assigned to 5 groups low-fat diet (LFD), high-fat diet (HFD) and high-fat diet supplemented with-perilla oil (HPO), olive oil (HOO), and safflower oil (HSO). After 16 weeks of the experimental period, the **** were sacrificed, and blood and tissues were collected. The serum was analyzed for obesity- and inflammation-related biomarkers.
