The important key hydrolysis parameters such as hydrolysis degree, yield, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity were evaluated in this experiment. Results The results showed that the degree of hydrolysis (DH) of all treatments increased with increasing hydrolysis time and protease concentrations. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the hydrolysates were affected by type and concentration of protease as well as hydrolysis time. Methods Seven positive confirmed samples (four samples have no mismatch, and three samples contained one mutation in probe binding sites) were used to establish novel real-time PCR with slightly modified probe (Y = C or T) in comparison with original probe recommended by OIE. Results Both real-time PCRs using the OIE-recommended probe and novel modified probe can detect ASFV in clinical samples without mismatch in probe binding site. Nutrient budgets can be used to evaluate the environmental impact and as a regulatory policy instrument for nutrient management. This study was conducted to select a nutrient budgeting approach applicable to the mixed crop-***** farms in Korea and suggest an effective manure treatment method to reduce on-farm nutrient production. Methods In this study, we compared current and ideal gross nutrient balance (GNB) approaches of OECD and soil system budget (SSB) approach with reference to on-farm manure treatment processes. Data obtained from farm census and published literature were used to develop the farm nutrient budgets. Results The average nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) surpluses were approximately 11 times and over 7 times respectively higher in the GNB approaches than the SSB. After solid-liquid separation of manure, during liquid composting a change in aeration method from intermittent to continuous reduced the N and P loading about 50% and 47%, respectively.

To examine the effects of shoe-stiffening inserts on lower limb kinematics in individuals with first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint osteoarthritis (OA).
Forty-eight individuals with radiographically confirmed first MTP joint OA (24 males and 24 females; mean age 57.8 years, standard deviation 10.5) were randomized to receive either shoe-stiffening inserts or sham inserts, and underwent gait analysis during level walking using a 10-camera infrared Vicon motion analysis system. Sagittal plane kinematics of the first MTP, ankle, knee, and hip joints were compared between the shoe only (control) and insert conditions in both groups (within-groups) and between both insert conditions (between-groups).
Compared to the shoe only condition, the sham insert reduced knee flexion and total excursion, and the shoe-stiffening insert reduced first MTP joint maximum dorsiflexion and ankle joint maximum plantarflexion, and increased maximum knee flexion and total excursion. Between-group comparisons indicated that the shoe-stiffening inserts significantly decreased first MTP joint maximum dorsiflexion, ankle joint maximum plantarflexion and total excursion, and increased knee joint maximum flexion and total excursion compared to the sham inserts.

These findings provide insights into the mechanisms that may be responsible for their clinical effectiveness in the treatment of first MTP joint OA, and potentially explain changes in symptoms in other lower limb joints.Numerous clinical trials of anti-amyloid beta (Aβ) immunotherapy in Alzheimer's disease have been performed. None of these have provided convincing evidence for beneficial effects. Using traditional frequentist meta-analysis, the conclusion is that there is absence of evidence for a therapeutic effect, with a point estimate effect size of 0.05 (95% confidence interval -0.00 to 0.10, P = .055). In addition, this non-significant effect equates to 0.4 points per year on the cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale. This is well below the minimally clinically important difference. Bayesian meta-analysis of these trial data provides strong evidence of absence of a therapeutic effect, with a Bayes factor of 11.27 in favor of the null hypothesis, opposed to a Bayes factor of 0.09 in favor of a treatment effect. Bayesian analysis is particularly valuable in this context of repeatedly reported small, non-significant effect sizes in individual trials. Mechanisms other than removal of Aβ from the brain may be probed to slow progression of Alzheimer's disease.Multimodal optical coherent tomography grows popularity with researchers and clinicians over the past decade. One of the modalities is lymphangiography, which allows visualization of the lymphatic vessel networks within optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging volume. In the present study, it is shown that lymphatic vessel visualization obtained from the depth-resolved attenuation coefficient distributions, corrected for the noise, shows improved contrast and detail in comparison with previously proposed approaches. We also argue that the two most popular approaches for lymphatic vessel visualization, namely simple intensity thresholding and vesselness calculation based on local Hessian matrix eigenvalues, imply different definitions of the lymphatic vessel's appearance in the OCT volume and lead to the different networks.
To evaluate the utility of a web-based advocacy training tool in increasing advocacy awareness METHODS Early career rheumatologists who attended 2019 ACR-Advocacy 101 were invited to participate. A web-based tool consisting of 9 cases covering various aspects of advocacy was developed and included the opportunity for continuing medical education credit. A pre-participation questionnaire surveyed prior involvement, knowledge, and willingness to participate in an advocacy program. Participants rated cases based on educational quality, relevance of content, achievement of training goals, competency, and evidence of bias. Two web-based conferences were held to address technical questions, review and discussion of cases and responses, and to obtain feedback.
Twenty-one early career rheumatologists from 9 academic institutions enrolled, with 15 (75%) completing all cases. Correct CME answers were scored on 85% of cases. Overall educational quality of content received a mean rating of 4.3 out of 5. Seven cases achieved positive ratings for relevance of case content, achievement of training goals, objectivity, and competency. Stroke and dementia share a number of modifiable risk factors and are the leading cause of neurological disability and death worldwide.
We report the 2019 estimations for global disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and death numbers and rates related to stroke and dementia, as well as their risk attributed DALYs and deaths and their changes between 2010 and 2019.
Stroke accounted for 69.8%, dementia for 17.3%, and combined contributed to 87.2% (8.2 million) of neurological deaths and 61.7% (168.5 million) of neurological DALYs in 2019. For stroke, 86.4% of DALYs and for dementias 32.8% of DALYs are attributable to risk factors. Globally, hypertension (54.8%) and unhealthy diet (30.0%) pose the greatest risk for stroke DALYs, and smoking (15.1%) and obesity (12.5%) for dementia DALYs.
Worldwide, stroke and dementia cases are increasing in number, but their age-standardized rates are falling. Finding out why offers the possibility of their joint delay, mitigation, or prevention.

Androgen receptor (AR) plays a pivotal role as a target for amplification/mutation in pathogenesis and tumor progression in prostate, and thus, controlling AR activity or expression might be a feasible therapeutic approach for the treatment of prostate cancer. Here, we report the novel mechanisms by which 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) targets AR to stimulate cell death in both hormone-responsive and -refractory prostate cancer cells. We found that miR-488, a tumor suppressive microRNA, was markedly induced by GA treatment, resulting in the down-regulation of AR expression and inhibition of cellular responses mediated by androgens. Moreover, GA not only suppressed the expression of androgen target genes (TMPRSS2, PSA, and NKX3.1), but also enhanced the suppressive effect of anti-androgens (bicalutamide and flutamide) on LNCaP cell growth. Our data further provides evidence that down-regulation of AR expression by GA may occur through transcriptional suppression at AR promoter region between - 1014 and - 829. Ectopic expression of SFR and E2F3α reversed the inhibitory effect of GA on AR promoter activity as well as protein expression, suggesting that GA may target transcription factors SRF and E2F3α to regulate AR expression. Androgen receptor (AR) plays a pivotal role as a target for amplification/mutation in pathogenesis and tumor progression in prostate, and thus, controlling AR activity or expression might be a feasible therapeutic approach for the treatment of prostate cancer. Here, we report the novel mechanisms by which 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) targets AR to stimulate cell death in both hormone-responsive and -refractory prostate cancer cells. We found that miR-488, a tumor suppressive microRNA, was markedly induced by GA treatment, resulting in the down-regulation of AR expression and inhibition of cellular responses mediated by androgens. Moreover, GA not only suppressed the expression of androgen target genes (TMPRSS2, PSA, and NKX3.1), but also enhanced the suppressive effect of anti-androgens (bicalutamide and flutamide) on LNCaP cell growth. Our data further provides evidence that down-regulation of AR expression by GA may occur through transcriptional suppression at AR promoter region between - 1014 and - 829. Acute infarction patterns have been described in cardioembolic stroke, mainly with atrial fibrillation (AF) or patent foramen ovale. We aimed to analyse acute infarction magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics in stroke patients with intracardiac thrombus (ICT) compared with stroke patients with AF.
We performed a retrospective study analysing brain MRI scans of consecutive acute symptomatic cardioembolic infarction patients associated with ICT or AF who were recruited and registered in the stroke database between June 2018 and November 2019. Diffusion-weighted imaging performed within 1 week after symptom onset, intra-/extracranial vessel imaging, echocardiography, and ≥24-h ECG monitoring were required for inclusion. Baseline, biological, and echocardiography characteristics were assessed. Dementia is a chronic disease with a variable prevalence throughout the world; however, this could be higher at high-altitude populations. We aimed to summarize the prevalence of cognitive impairment and dementia in older adults living at high altitude.
We searched in PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase and included the studies published from inception to July 20, 2020, with no language restriction, which reported the frequency of cognitive impairment or dementia in older adults living at high-altitude populations. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to calculate the overall prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of cognitive impairment and dementia. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) adapted for cross-sectional studies.
Six studies were included (3,724 participants), and 5 of the 6 included studies were carried out in Latin America. The altitude ranged from 1,783 to 3,847 m, the proportion of women included varied from 38.7 to 65.6%, and the proportion of participants with elementary or illiterate educational level ranged from 71.7 to 97.6%. The overall prevalence of cognitive impairment was 22.0% (95% CI 8-40, I2 99%), and the overall prevalence of dementia was 11.0% (95% CI 6-17, I2 92%). In a subgroup analysis according to the instrument used to evaluate cognitive impairment, the prevalence of cognitive impairment was 21.0% (95% CI 5-42, I2 99%) in the MMSE group while the prevalence was 29.0% (95% CI 0-78) in the non-MMSE group.

The ISRHML was formed in 1988 by a group of young scientists who were intrigued with the mysteries of HM and LT and the effects of HM upon recipient human infants. The inception of the ISRHML by those scientists with many different types of interests and expertise led over the next 3 decades to a wealth of new information concerning the biology of the mammary gland and the exceptionally complex composition of HM. Those findings helped to explain why HM is by far the superior nutrition for human infants.
Excisional biopsy (EB) is considered the gold standard for lymphoma diagnosis. Although recent advances in interventional radiology enable sampling with core-needle biopsy (CNB), only few studies evaluated the utility of CNB compared to that of EB.
We analyzed patients with lymphoma who had a diagnostic biopsy at the National Cancer Center Hospital during 2002-2017. We investigated the clinical and pathological characteristics of CNB in 2017.
The proportion of CNB utility in total biopsy procedures had increased from 11 to 48% during the 15 years. In 2017, CNB was opted more frequently than EB for a biopsy of superficial, abdominal, or anterior mediastinal lesions. Only one out of 72 patients who had CNB required re-biopsy with EB because of insufficiency. The incidence of complications was comparable between CNB and EB 2 (4%) cases of minor bleeding with CNB and 1 (8%) case of minor bleeding with EB. The median time from the first visit to biopsy was significantly shorter with CNB (5.5 days) than with EB (15 days).

ZCO@NF electrode exhibited a high capacitance of 1250 (750) and 733 F g-1(440 C g-1) at 2.5 and 20 A g-1, respectively, demonstrating the outstanding rate-capability of 58.6% even at 8 times larger current density. Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a delicious nutrient-rich fruit widely cultivated in countries such as China, America, Chile, and Italy. However, the yield often drops severely due to the frequently-abnormal fruitlet abscission, and few studies on the metabolism during its ripening process at the proteomic level have been executed so far. To get a better understanding regarding the sweet cherry abscission mechanism, proteomic analysis between the abscising carpopodium and non-abscising carpopodium of sweet cherry was accomplished using a newly developed Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry with Tandem Mass Tag (TMT-LC-MS/MS) methodology. The embryo viability experiments showed that the vigor of the abscission embryos was significantly lower than that of retention embryo. Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a delicious nutrient-rich fruit widely cultivated in countries such as China, America, Chile, and Italy. However, the yield often drops severely due to the frequently-abnormal fruitlet abscission, and few studies on the metabolism during its ripening process at the proteomic level have been executed so far. To get a better understanding regarding the sweet cherry abscission mechanism, proteomic analysis between the abscising carpopodium and non-abscising carpopodium of sweet cherry was accomplished using a newly developed Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry with Tandem Mass Tag (TMT-LC-MS/MS) methodology. The embryo viability experiments showed that the vigor of the abscission embryos was significantly lower than that of retention embryo. AYAs have struggled in the early pandemic in ways similar to their peers but with compounding uncertainty regarding their unknown risk due to cancer history. Healthcare providers and systems can better support AYAs by providing additional psychosocial supports, developing strategies to triage good candidates for telehealth, and providing information about cancer survivor-specific risks for COVID-19.
Our findings indicate a need for psychosocial supports that address managing anxiety and uncertainty. AYAs may be able to draw on their cancer experiences to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this study, we focused on α-L-arabinofuranosidase, an enzyme important for the treatment of lignocellulosic biomass, but susceptible to oxidative damage that can occur during industrial processing. The molecular details that render this enzyme inactive have not yet been identified. To approach this issue, we used proteomics to identify amino acid residues that were oxidized after a relevant oxidative treatment (Fenton reaction). These oxidative modifications were included in the 3D protein structures, and using molecular dynamics simulations, we then studied the behaviors of non-modified and oxidized enzymes. These simulations showed significant alterations of the conformational stability of the protein when oxidized, as evidenced by changes in root mean square deviation (RMSD) and principal component analyses (PCA) trajectories. Likewise, enzyme-ligand interactions such as hydrogen bonds were greatly reduced in quantity and quality in the oxidized protein. Finally, free energy landscape plots showed that there was a more rugged energy surface in the oxidized protein, implying a less favorable reaction pathway. These results reveal the basis for loss of function in this carbohydrate active enzyme (CAZY) in the commercially relevant fungus T. reesei.The first International Workshop of the ATM and Cancer Risk group focusing on the role of Ataxia-Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM) gene in cancer was held on December 4 and 5, 2019 at Institut Curie in Paris, France. It was motivated by the fact that germline ATM pathogenic variants have been found to be associated with different cancer types. However, due to the lack of precise age-, sex-, and site-specific risk estimates, no consensus on management guidelines for variant carriers exists, and the clinical utility of ATM variant testing is uncertain. The meeting brought together epidemiologists, geneticists, biologists and clinicians to review current knowledge and on-going challenges related to ATM and cancer risk. This report summarizes the meeting sessions content that covered the latest results in family-based and population-based studies, the importance of accurate variant classification, the effect of radiation exposures for ATM variant carriers, and the characteristics of ATM-deficient tumors. The report concludes that ATM variant carriers outside of the context of Ataxia-Telangiectasia may benefit from effective cancer risk management and therapeutic strategies and that efforts to set up large-scale studies in the international framework to achieve this goal are necessary.

Anaplastic oligodendrogliomas are high-grade gliomas defined molecularly by 1p19q co-deletion. There is no curative therapy, and standard of care includes surgical resection followed by radiation and chemotherapy. However, the benefit of up-front radiation with chemotherapy compared to chemotherapy alone has not been demonstrated in a randomized control trial. Given the potential long-term consequences of radiation therapy, such as cognitive impairment, arteriopathy, endocrinopathy, and hearing/visual impairment, there is an effort to balance longevity with radiation toxicity.
We performed a retrospective single institution analysis of survival of patients with anaplastic oligodendroglioma over 20 years.
159 patients were identified as diagnosed with an anaplastic oligodendroglioma between 1996 and 2016. Of those, 40 patients were found to have AO at original diagnosis and had documented 1p19q co-deletion with a median of 7.1 years of follow-up (range 0.6-16.7 years). After surgery, 45 % of patients were treated with radiation and chemotherapy at diagnosis, and 50 % were treated with adjuvant chemotherapy alone.

We performed a retrospective single institution analysis of survival of patients with anaplastic oligodendroglioma over 20 years.
159 patients were identified as diagnosed with an anaplastic oligodendroglioma between 1996 and 2016. Of those, 40 patients were found to have AO at original diagnosis and had documented 1p19q co-deletion with a median of 7.1 years of follow-up (range 0.6-16.7 years). After surgery, 45 % of patients were treated with radiation and chemotherapy at diagnosis, and 50 % were treated with adjuvant chemotherapy alone.
AYAs have struggled in the early pandemic in ways similar to their peers but with compounding uncertainty regarding their unknown risk due to cancer history. Healthcare providers and systems can better support AYAs by providing additional psychosocial supports, developing strategies to triage good candidates for telehealth, and providing information about cancer survivor-specific risks for COVID-19. In this study, we focused on α-L-arabinofuranosidase, an enzyme important for the treatment of lignocellulosic biomass, but susceptible to oxidative damage that can occur during industrial processing. The molecular details that render this enzyme inactive have not yet been identified. To approach this issue, we used proteomics to identify amino acid residues that were oxidized after a relevant oxidative treatment (Fenton reaction). These oxidative modifications were included in the 3D protein structures, and using molecular dynamics simulations, we then studied the behaviors of non-modified and oxidized enzymes. These simulations showed significant alterations of the conformational stability of the protein when oxidized, as evidenced by changes in root mean square deviation (RMSD) and principal component analyses (PCA) trajectories. Likewise, enzyme-ligand interactions such as hydrogen bonds were greatly reduced in quantity and quality in the oxidized protein. Finally, free energy landscape plots showed that there was a more rugged energy surface in the oxidized protein, implying a less favorable reaction pathway. It was motivated by the fact that germline ATM pathogenic variants have been found to be associated with different cancer types. However, due to the lack of precise age-, sex-, and site-specific risk estimates, no consensus on management guidelines for variant carriers exists, and the clinical utility of ATM variant testing is uncertain. The meeting brought together epidemiologists, geneticists, biologists and clinicians to review current knowledge and on-going challenges related to ATM and cancer risk. This report summarizes the meeting sessions content that covered the latest results in family-based and population-based studies, the importance of accurate variant classification, the effect of radiation exposures for ATM variant carriers, and the characteristics of ATM-deficient tumors. To evaluate the clinical performance of universal adhesives in etch-and-rinse or self-etch application modes through meta-analysis.
A literature search was performed by two reviewers in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases (from January 2000 to March 2020). A total of 2,516 non-replicated records were identified and filtered. Studies that evaluated the clinical performance of universal adhesives using etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode were included. RevMan 5.3.5 (Cochrane, London, UK) was used to perform the meta-analysis.
A total of 13 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The retention rates were higher in etch-and-rinse groups compared with self-etch groups [odds ratio (OR) =0.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18-0.71, P=0.003]. The etch-and-rinse approach also had better performance in marginal adaptation (OR =0.49, 95% CI 0.36-0.67, P<0.001) and marginal staining (OR =0.49, 95% CI 0.36-0.66, P<0.001). The current data showed a very low incidence rate of secondary caries or postoperative sensitivity, and there were no significant differences in the incidence rates between the etch-and-rinse groups and self-etch groups.

Tension-type headache (TTH), also called muscle contraction headache or neurological headache, is mainly characterized by chronic and persistent bilateral headache in the neck and a severe sense of restraint in the head. This study aims to analyze the effect of warming acupuncture and moxibustion at temples combined with Deanxit on tension headache.
A total of 252 patients with anxiety and tension headache were randomly divided into routine group and study group. The study group was treated with Dailixin on the basis of warm acupuncture and moxibustion. The headache score, pericranial muscle tenderness score, therapeutic effect, tension headache attack times and duration, HAMD and HAMA scores were analyzed before and after treatment.
The effective cure rate of the study group was significantly higher than that of the routine group. The pericranial muscle tenderness scores of the study group were significantly lower than those of the routine group. Furthermore, the headache degree score, number of attacks, and duration of the study group after treatment were significantly lower than those of the routine group. And the HAMD and HAMA scores in the study group was significantly lower than those in the routine group.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum amyloid protein A (SAA), procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), and PICC infection in patients with malignant tumor.
Patients with malignant tumor treated with PICC in Gansu Provincial Cancer Hospital from March 2017 to January 2020 were retrospectively investigated. The incidence of infection and the differences in SAA, PCT, CRP, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), fibrinogen (FIG), interleukin-18 (IL-18), and interleukin-16 (IL-6) between the infected group and noninfected group were observed. The correlations of SAA, PCT, and CRP levels in different infection sites and r infection. Furthermore, these parameters were positively correlated with the degree of PICC catheter infection.

In this study we aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and metabolic effect of a dietary supplement based on alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) in order to include this product in a novel PN service. The antioxidant properties of the commercial nutraceutical were investigated at physiological conditions (through in vitro digestion) and at mitochondrial conditions. The metabolic activity was assessed in a human pilot study using a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) methodology in dried urine samples. The nutraceutical exerted an elevated antiradical activity and reducing capacity, especially at mitochondrial conditions, after in vitro digestion. This increase in mitochondrial activity was also evidenced in vivo by a significant increase in the urinary phosphate concentration (p = 0.004). As pro-oxidant effect was reached with the concentration of 4 capsules, 2 capsules at the same time could be a reasonable dose. No adverse effects were recorded in vivo with this dose. Thus, although its metabolic effect was not so conclusive, ALA + ALC combination might be beneficial as a dietary supplement for the prevention of the oxidative stress and an interesting dietary supplement to consider in large scale studies.With growing consumer awareness, exploitation of renewable resources is cost-effective and environment friendly. This work examines the potential of citrus peels as natural antioxidants and antimicrobials for food preservation. Extraction yield, total soluble phenols and flavonoids of various citrus peels (sweet orange, lemon, tangerine and grapefruit) were optimized by varying the solvent type. While the highest extract yield (~16 g/100g) was obtained from the sweet orange peels in methanol, extraction with ethanol maximized the concentration of total phenols and flavonoids (~80 mg catechol equivalents/100 g dry weight). In addition, sweet orange peel extract showed the highest DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radical scavenging values. UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of sweet orange peels revealed more than 40 polyphenolic compounds including phenolic acids and flavonoids, some of which have not been previously reported. The predominant polyphenols were narirutin, naringin, hesperetin-7-O-rutinoside naringenin, quinic acid, hesperetin, datiscetin-3-O-rutinoside and sakuranetin. The incorporation of sweet orange peel extract into two vegetable oils enhanced their oxidative stability. In addition, all citrus peel extracts possessed high antimicrobial activity against several food-borne pathogens, and the activity was highest for the sweet orange peel extract. Drawing on expertise in critical care medicine, bioethics, and political science, we propose a decision-making protocol to ensure fairness in the resolution of conflict, timely decision-making, and accountability to improve system response.

In this study we aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and metabolic effect of a dietary supplement based on alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) in order to include this product in a novel PN service. The antioxidant properties of the commercial nutraceutical were investigated at physiological conditions (through in vitro digestion) and at mitochondrial conditions. The metabolic activity was assessed in a human pilot study using a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) methodology in dried urine samples. The nutraceutical exerted an elevated antiradical activity and reducing capacity, especially at mitochondrial conditions, after in vitro digestion. This increase in mitochondrial activity was also evidenced in vivo by a significant increase in the urinary phosphate concentration (p = 0.004). As pro-oxidant effect was reached with the concentration of 4 capsules, 2 capsules at the same time could be a reasonable dose. No adverse effects were recorded in vivo with this dose. Thus, although its metabolic effect was not so conclusive, ALA + ALC combination might be beneficial as a dietary supplement for the prevention of the oxidative stress and an interesting dietary supplement to consider in large scale studies.With growing consumer awareness, exploitation of renewable resources is cost-effective and environment friendly. This work examines the potential of citrus peels as natural antioxidants and antimicrobials for food preservation. Extraction yield, total soluble phenols and flavonoids of various citrus peels (sweet orange, lemon, tangerine and grapefruit) were optimized by varying the solvent type. While the highest extract yield (~16 g/100g) was obtained from the sweet orange peels in methanol, extraction with ethanol maximized the concentration of total phenols and flavonoids (~80 mg catechol equivalents/100 g dry weight). In addition, sweet orange peel extract showed the highest DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radical scavenging values. UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of sweet orange peels revealed more than 40 polyphenolic compounds including phenolic acids and flavonoids, some of which have not been previously reported. The predominant polyphenols were narirutin, naringin, hesperetin-7-O-rutinoside naringenin, quinic acid, hesperetin, datiscetin-3-O-rutinoside and sakuranetin. The incorporation of sweet orange peel extract into two vegetable oils enhanced their oxidative stability. In addition, all citrus peel extracts possessed high antimicrobial activity against several food-borne pathogens, and the activity was highest for the sweet orange peel extract. Decidual natural killer cell (dNK), the predominant decidual lymphocytes in early pregnancy, are primarily identified based on their CD56bright CD16- phenotype and play an important role in maintaining immune tolerance at the maternal-fetal interface. dNK dysfunction reportedly leads to pathological pregnancy. Indeed, various dNK-derived soluble factors are involved in a series of key processes related to pregnancy outcomes. In this review, we summarize the roles of these dNK-derived factors in immune tolerance and embryonic development to improve the current understanding regarding the physiological and pathological mechanisms that occur during pregnancy, while potentially informing the development of effective therapeutics.Non-noble transition metal complexes have attracted growing interest as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) while their activities still lack rational and effective regulation. Herein, we propose a d-π conjugation strategy for rough and fine tuning of ORR activity of TM-BTA (TM=Mn/Fe/Co/Ni/Cu, BTA=1,2,4,5-benzenetetramine) coordination polymers. By first-principle calculations, we elucidate that the strong d-π conjugation elevates the dxz /dyz orbitals of TM centers to enhance intermediate adsorption and strengthens the electronic modulation effect from substitute groups on ligands. Based on this strategy, Co-TABQ (tetramino benzoquinone) is found to approach the top of ORR activity volcano. The synthesized Co-TABQ with atomically distributed Co on carbon nanotubes exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.85 V and a specific current of 127 mA mgmetal -1 at 0.8 V, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C. The high activity, low peroxide yield, and considerable durability of Co-BTA and Co-TABQ promise their application in oxygen electrocatalysis. This study provides mechanistic insight into the rational design of transition metal complex catalysts.
To identify risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Nairobi, Kenya.
A case-control study comparing 70 (53% women) recently diagnosed T2D cases with age-, sex- and socioeconomic status-matched normoglycemic controls (11). Objectively measured data were obtained on anthropometrics, handgrip strength and physical activity (by accelerometer). Self-reported data were collected on demographic characteristics and lifestyle factors. Logistic regression models, adjusted for covariates, were used to analyse the data.
Each standard deviation (SD) increase in height was associated with lower odds for T2D (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=0.34 (95% confidence intervals [CIs] 0.17, 0.66), P=0.0031). Fat-free mass was inversely associated with T2D (AOR=0.42 (95% CI 0.24, 0.75), P=0.0032, per SD increase). Grip strength was associated with a lower risk of T2D (AOR=0.20 (95% CI 0.08, 0.45), P<0.001, per SD increase). However, this protein does not act alone; other polypeptides are required for the initiation of an appropriate number of starch granules per chloroplast. The functions of this group of polypeptides include providing suitable substrates (maltooligosaccharides) to SS4, the localization of the starch initiation machinery to the thylakoid membranes, and facilitating the correct folding of SS4. The number of starch granules per chloroplast is tightly regulated and depends on the developmental stage of the leaves and their metabolic status. Plastidial phosphorylase (PHS1) and other enzymes play an essential role in this process since they are necessary for the synthesis of the substrates used by the initiation machinery. The mechanism of starch granule formation initiation in Arabidopsis seems to be generalizable to other plants and also to the synthesis of long-term storage starch. The latter, however, shows specific features due to the presence of more isoforms, the absence of constantly recurring starch synthesis and degradation, and the metabolic characteristics of the storage sink organs.Advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-induced inflammation and degradation of aggrecan in human chondrocytes play an important role in the progression and development of osteoarthritis (OA). Azilsartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, has been licensed for the treatment of high blood pressure. However, the effects of Azilsartan in OA and AGEs-induced damages in chondrocytes have not been previously reported. The injured chondrocytes model was established by incubating with 5 μmol/L AGEs. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide was used to evaluate the cell viability of treated SW1353 cells. The gene expression levels of interleukin-1α (IL-1α), tumor necrosis factor-β (TNF-β), IL-6, a disintegrin-like and metallopeptidase with thrombospondin type motif-4 (ADAMTS-4), ADAMTS-5, Aggrecan, and Sox-4 were evaluated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and their protein levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or Western blot analysis. Mitogen-activated protein kinase p38 pathway was surveyed using phosp-p38 level and its specific inhibitor SB203580 was employed to block the p38 pathway.
