    The mean gestational age (GA) at birth was 26.4 weeks, and 213 (56%) infants developed BPD. A 10% increase in HbF was associated with a decreased prevalence of BPD, OR 0.64 (95% CI 0.49 to 0.83; p<0.001). This association remained when adjusting for mean PaO

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the neuromuscular structures at risk during modified anterior minimally invasive plating osteosynthesis technique (Belangero-Livani) for humeral shaft fractures.

    Eight fresh-frozen human specimens ranging from 38 to 82years old were used. Specimens were positioned supine with the shoulder in 70° abduction and the forearm in full supination. Anterior minimally invasive plating osteosynthesis technique according to Belangero-Livani technique was performed in each specimen. Under radioscopic control, the plate was introduced in retrograde fashion through the subbrachialis path. Anatomical structures were inspected and different anatomical parameters were measured after dissection at the end of the surgical procedures. Measurements were performed using a high digital caliper.     There were no macroscopic lesions of myotendinous or neurovascular structures in any specimen. We found a significant direct correlation between the total length of the humerus and both specimen height and weight.

    The modified Belangero-Livani anterior MIPO technique for humeral shaft fractures performed in retrograde fashion is safe and useful, without major risk to the soft tissue of the anterior compartment of the arm, including the radial nerve in the lateral intermuscular septum. Intraoperative dissection, avoiding deep lateral retraction on the distal approach, minimizes the risk of radial nerve damage. Strict surgical planning and appreciation for the anatomic landmarks can reduce the risk of damage to neuromuscular structures.

    Iron overload, a state with excessive iron storage in the body, is a common complication in thalassemia patients which leads to multiple organ dysfunctions including the bone. Iron overload-induced bone disease is one of the most common and severe complications of thalassemia including osteoporosis. Currently, osteoporosis is still frequently found in thalassemia even with widely available iron chelation therapy.

    Relevant publications published before December 2019 in PubMed database were reviewed. Both pre-clinical studies and clinical trials were obtained using iron overload, thalassemia, osteoporosis, osteoblast, and osteoclast as keywords.

    Increased ROS production is a hallmark of iron overload-induced impaired bone remodeling. At the cellular level, oxidative stress affects bone remodeling by both osteoblast inhibition and osteoclast activation via many signaling pathways. In thalassemia patients, it has been shown that bone resorption was increased while bone formation was concurrently reduced.

    In this review, reports on the cellular mechanisms of iron overload-associated bone remodeling are comprehensively summarized and presented to provide current understanding this pathological condition. Moreover, current treatments and potential interventions for attenuating bone remodeling in iron overload are also summarized to pave ways for the future discoveries of novel agents that alleviate this condition.

A mechanism-based model was developed to quantify the effects of ASP8232 on renal markers from a placebo-controlled Phase 2 study in diabetic kidney disease with 12 weeks of ASP8232 treatment. The model incorporated the available pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic (plasma VAP-1 concentration and activity), serum and urine creatinine, serum cystatin C, albumin excretion rate, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, and urine volume information in an integrated manner. Drug-independent time-varying changes and different drug effects could be quantified for these markers using the model. Through simulations, this model provided the opportunity to dissect the relationship and longitudinal association between the estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria and to quantify the pharmacological effects of ASP8232. The developed drug-independent model may be useful as a starting point for other compounds affecting the same biomarkers in a similar time scale.
    Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) has been suggested as a novel biomarker that can represent sarcopenia in head and neck malignancies. This study investigated the association of TMT with clinical outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM).

    Using electronic medical records, all GBM patients between 2008 and 2018 at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital were reviewed. Total 177 patients met our eligibility criteria.

    The thinner group who had TMT less than the median showed shorter overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) than the thicker group who had TMT more than median (OS; 11.0 versus 18.0months, p < 0.001, and PFS; 6.0 versus 11.0months, p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, the thinner group had negative associations with OS and PFS (OS; HR 2.63 (1.34-2.63), p < 0.001, and PFS; HR 2.21 (1.34-2.50), p = 0.002). We also performed propensity score matching between the thinner and thicker groups to minimize the potential bias. The thinner group showed shorter OS and PFS (OS; 13.5 versus 19.0months, p = 0.006, and PFS; 6.5 versus 9.0months, p = 0.028) and had negative associations with OS and PFS than the thicker group (OS; HR 1.90 (1.19-3.03), p = 0.008, and PFS; HR 1.70 (1.07-2.70), p = 0.026) in matched patients.

    Our findings suggest that TMT can be a useful prognostic biomarker for clinical outcomes in GBM patients. Further preclinical and clinical studies could help elucidate this association of sarcopenia with clinical outcomes in GBM patients.

To span this period in locations such as the Sahelian zone of Mali, mosquitoes must either migrate to areas of permanent water, recolonize areas as they again become favorable, or survive in harsh conditions including high temperatures, low humidity, and an absence of surface water (required for breeding). Adult mosquitoes surviving through this season must dramatically extend their typical lifespan (averaging 2-3weeks) to 7months. Previous work has found evidence that the malaria mosquito An. coluzzii, survives over 200days in the wild between rainy seasons in a presumed state of aestivation (hibernation), but this state has so far not been replicated in laboratory conditions. The SPSS 26.0 software (univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis) was used to analyze the general condition, fracture-related factors, operation-related factors, and construct characteristics of internal fixation.

    Sixteen of 152 patients who were included in the study underwent revision surgery, with a revision rate 10.5%. Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in age, body mass index (BMI), fracture type, supracondylar involved or not, type of incision, quality of reduction, ratio of length of plate/fracture area (R1), the ratio of the length of the plate/fracture area above the condylar (R2), ratio of distance between proximal part of fracture and screw/working length of proximal plate (R3) betwsible risk factors of the revision in distal femoral fractures treated with lateral locking plate. The appropriate application of the locking plate and operation strategy are the key to reduce the revision rate in distal femoral fractures.

Patients with other factors that could affect knee extension at the time of surgery were excluded. We recorded the thickness of posterior femoral condyle bone resected as well as the thickness of the posterior femoral component chosen for each patient. Patients' knee extension was recorded under anesthetic, prior to resection and intraoperatively after total knee replacement.Average thickness of bone resection for the posteromedial femur was 12.64  ± 1.65 mm and for the posterolateral femur was 10.38  ± 1.52 mm. Using a linear regression model, we found that changes in posterior offset and implant downsizing influenced correction of fixed flexion deformity at the time of surgery. When patients had a combined posteromedial and posterolateral offset 2 mm thinner than the thickness of bone resected, there was an average correction of 3.5 degrees of flexion contracture.Our study demonstrated that posterior femoral condyle offset is an independent variable affecting correction of flexion contracture at the time of surgery in a gap balanced cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty. Kinematic alignment (KA) and mechanical alignment (MA) use the same femoral component but align the component differently. Our objective was to determine differences in trochlear morphology from native for a femoral component interfaced with an anatomical patellar prosthesis in KA and MA. Ten three-dimensional femur-cartilage models were created by combining computed tomography and laser scans of native human cadaveric femurs free of skeletal abnormalities. The femoral component was positioned using KA and MA. Measurements of the prosthetic and native trochlea were made along the arc length of the native trochlear groove and differences from native were computed for the medial-lateral and radial locations of the groove and sulcus angle. Mean medial-lateral locations of the prosthetic groove were within 1.5 and 3.5 mm of native for KA and MA, respectively. Mean radial locations of the prosthetic groove were as large as 5 mm less than native for KA and differences were greater for MA. Sulcus angles of the prosthetic trochlea were 10 degrees steeper proximally, and 10 degrees flatter distally than native for both KA and MA. Largest differences from native occurred for radial locations and sulcus angles for both KA and MA. The consistency of these results with those of other fundamentally different designs which use a modified dome (i.e., sombrero hat) patellar prosthesis highlights the need to reassess the design of the prosthetic trochlea on the part of multiple manufacturers worldwide.Kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty (KATKA) was developed to improve the anatomical alignment of knee prostheses, assisting in restoring the native alignment of the knee and promoting physiological kinematics. The current meta-analysis of RCTs with a minimum of 2 years of follow-up investigated the clinical and radiological differences between KATKA and MATKA. A systematic review of the English language literature resulted in the inclusion of four RCTs.     Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is a rarity in everyday surgical practice with 0.5 - 1% of all joint infections. Although there are several risk factors for the occurrence of this disease, also healthy people can sometimes be affected. The clinical appearance is very variable and ranges from unspecific symptoms such as local indolent swelling, redness or restricted movement of the affected shoulder girdle to serious consequences (mediastinitis, sepsis, jugular vein thrombosis). Together with the low incidence and the unfamiliarity of the disease among practicing doctors in other specialties, this often results in a delay in the diagnosis, which in addition to a significant reduction in the quality of life can also have devastating consequences for the patient.

Graphene-based field effect transistors were used as switches in the true-time delay line of the phased array antenna. The graphene phased array antenna was 100% inkjet printed on top of a 5 mil flexible Kapton® substrate, at room temperature. Four possible azimuth steering angles were designed for -26.7°, 0°, 13°, and 42.4°.   • The article begins with an analysis of Yossi Shain, Ha-Me'ah ha-Yisraelit ve-ha-Yisraelizaziyah shel ha-Yahadut (The Israeli Century and the Israelization of Judaism) (2019), which puts forward a novel and enlightening revisionist view of the relationship between Israeli and American Jewries. The second part of the article reveals essential problems with Shain's central argument. These come to a fore through the study of Judaism as a lived religion. Three examples are discussed at length to illustrate this point developments in the religious lives of liberal Jews, Chabad, and Orthodox Feminism.2019 marked the 25th anniversary of the introduction of Animal Law to the law degree at Liverpool John Moores University. This article examines changes in the legal protection of animals during this time and the impact this will have on research and scholarship in the law relating to animals. The manuscript investigates the Albanian legal system, the documents published by the National Ethics Committee and the National Committee of Health, as the two main advisory public bodies on health issues, as well as the national medical jurisprudence and the Code of Medical Ethics. After emphasizing the importance of instructional medical directives and considering the international literature that has underlined the ethical principle of patient autonomy, this paper provides some policy suggestions. In the conclusion, this contribution highlights the importance of ad hoc rules governing instructional medical directives as well as the ethical principles and international literature as an instrument to fill the gap in the national system. In addition, particular attention is given to the application of ethical principles in end-of-life decisions in the current pandemic situation.Animal welfare legislation routinely places obligations on owners of animals to take action to ensure that the welfare of the animal(s) is protected. Such legislation often requires animals to be sheltered by appropriate housing. Where facilities are built to provide animal housing it may be necessary to seek planning permission for the development, this is particularly an issue in relation to commercial facilities. The general approach of planning authorities in the Republic of Ireland is not to have regard to animal welfare matters at the planning stage. With reference to commercial dog breeding this paper considers the implications of the failure to have regard to animal welfare legislation during the planning process and the impact this can have on both animal welfare, but also the risks such an approach poses to the environment and public health.The political situation in Italy had and still has implications for sovereign credit and redenomination risk. The current political environment is discussed from an economic and legal perspective focusing strongly on the funding situation of Italian banks. Some empirical evidence is reported. The findings depicted here are compatible with the point of view that the political development in Rome has affected the relationship between bank funding costs in Germany and Italy. In fact, there is clear evidence for the relevance of nonlinearities. Given the time period examined, changes to redenomination risk due to fears about Italy leaving the Euro could be one crucial explanation for the findings reported here.This paper brings together evidence from various data sources and the most recent studies to describe what we know so far about the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on inequalities across several key domains of life, including employment and ability to earn, family life and health. We show how these new fissures interact with existing inequalities along various key dimensions, including socio-economic status, education, age, gender, ethnicity and geography. We find that the deep underlying inequalities and policy challenges that we already had are crucial in understanding the complex impacts of the pandemic itself and our response to it, and that the crisis does in itself have the potential to exacerbate some of these pre-existing inequalities fairly directly. Moreover, it seems likely that the current crisis will leave legacies that will impact inequalities in the long term. These possibilities are not all disequalising, but many are.The COVID-19 pandemic is having a dramatic economic impact in most countries. In the UK, it has led to sharp falls in labour demand in many sectors of the economy and to initial acute labour shortages in other sectors. **** more than in a typical downturn, the current crisis is not simply a general slowdown in economic activity but also a radical short-term shift in the mix of economic activities - of which an unknown, but possibly significant, amount will be persistent.   • This is the first successful study that combines ATR-FUV-DUV spectroscopy with MCR-ALS calculations to build a solvation model that describes the electronic states.Enantioselective fluorescent sensors show large potential for fast, real-time, and highly sensitive measurement of the concentration and enantiomeric composition of chiral molecules. Among all of the sensors, BINOL-based sensors have been actively investigated and extensively used to carry out highly enantioselective, sensitive recognition of chiral α-hydroxycarboxylic acids, amino acids, amino acid derivatives, amino alcohols and amines. In this manuscript, the recent progress of chiral BINOL-based sensors for enantioselective fluorescence recognition of different substrates is reviewed and discussed. The structure of BINOL is tuned by introducing various groups or molecules which systematically changed its fluorescence properties and offered potential for rapid assays of chiral organic molecules. From the development of this area, we gain fresh insight into the challenges and chances of BINOL-based sensors.Single-cell analysis is an emerging research area that aims to reveal delicate cellular status and underlying mechanisms by conquering the intercellular heterogeneity. Current single-cell research methods, however, are highly dependent on cell-destructive protocols and cannot sequentially display the progress of cellular events. A recently developed pH nanoprobe in our lab conceptually showed its ability to detect intracellular pH (pHi) without cell labeling or disruption. In the present study, we took the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) as a typical example of cell heterogeneity, to testify the practicality of the pH nanoprobe in interpreting cell status. Three types of NPs (CeO2, TiO2, and SiO2) were employed to generate varied toxic effects. Results showed that the traditional assays - including cell viability, intracellular ROS generation, and mitochondrial inner membrane depolarization - not only failed to report the nanotoxicity accurately and timely, but also drew confusing or misleading conclusions. The pH nanoprobe revealed explicit pHi changes induced by the NPs, which corresponded well with the cell damages found by the transmission electron microscopic (TEM) imaging. Besides, our results unveiled an unexpectedly devastating effect of SiO2 NPs on cells during the early stage NP-cell interaction. The developed novel pH nanoprobe demonstrated a rapid sensing capability at single-cell resolution with minimum invasiveness. Therefore, it may become a promising alternative for a wide range of applications in areas such as single-cell research and precision medicine.
    Viral suppression in patients on antiretroviral treatment (ART) is critical to reducing HIV transmission and HIV-related mortality. Although many studies have evaluated factors associated with viral suppression, few have assessed the extent to which missing viral load data may bias results.

    We included data on all patients starting ART from 2005 to 2019 in eight South African cohorts participating in the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) collaboration. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with having a viral load measurement within 2 months of a scheduled testing date and having a viral load <400 RNA copies/ml ('viral suppression'). In a sensitivity analysis, missing viral loads were imputed based on patients' clinical and demographic characteristics and outcomes.

    There is considerable scientific interest in finding new and innovative ways to capture rapid fluctuations in functioning within individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), a severe, recurrent mental disorder associated with frequent shifts in symptoms and functioning. The use of smartphones can provide valid and real-world tools for use in measurement-based care and could be used to inform more personalized treatment options for this group, which can improve standard of care.

    We examined the feasibility and usability of a smartphone to capture daily fluctuations in mood within BD and to relate daily self-rated mood to smartphone use behaviors indicative of psychomotor activity or symptoms of the illness.

    Participants were 26 individuals with BD and 12 healthy control individuals who were recruited from the Prechter Longitudinal Study of BD. All were given a smartphone with a custom-built app and prompted twice a day to complete questions of mood for 28 days. The app automatically and unobtrusively collected phone usage data.

We examined the feasibility and usability of a smartphone to capture daily fluctuations in mood within BD and to relate daily self-rated mood to smartphone use behaviors indicative of psychomotor activity or symptoms of the illness. Participants were 26 individuals with BD and 12 healthy control individuals who were recruited from the Prechter Longitudinal Study of BD.     Meningiomas are the second most common primary tumors of the central nervous system. However, there is a paucity of data on meningioma biology due to the lack of suitable preclinical in vitro and in vivo models. In this study, we report the establishment and characterization of patient-derived, spontaneously immortalized cancer cell lines derived from World Health Organization (WHO) grade I and atypical WHO grade II meningiomas.

    We evaluated high-resolution 3T MRI neuroimaging findings in meningioma patients which were followed by histological analysis. RT-qPCR and immunostaining analyses were performed to determine the expression levels of meningioma-related factors. Additionally, flow cytometry and sorting assays were conducted to investigate and isolate the CD133 and CD44 positive cells from primary atypical meningioma cells. Further, we compared the gene expression profiles of meningiomas and cell lines derived from them by performing whole-exome sequencing of the blood and tumor samples from the patients, and the primary cancer cell lines established from the meningioma tumor.

  • To assess whole-liver texture analysis on T1 maps for risk stratification of advanced fibrosis in patients with suspected nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

    This retrospective study included 53 patients. Histogram and texture parameters (volume, mean, SD, median, 5th percentile, 95th percentile, skewness, kurtosis, diff-entropy, diff-variance, contrast, and entropy) of T1 maps were calculated based on the semi-automatically segmented whole-liver volume. A two-step approach combining the Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Fibrosis Score (NFS) and Fibrosis-4 Index (FIB-4) with the liver stiffness measurement (LSM) for the risk stratification was used. Univariate analysis was performed to identify significant parameters. Logistic regression models were then run on the significant features. Diagnostic performance was evaluated with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.

In the canonical correspondence analysis, salinity, dissolved oxygen, organic matter, sediment Eh, sediment pH and sand were identified as important variance descriptors. A single species of an opportunist, Americorophium triaeonyx, an amphipod belonging to the ecological group (EG) III, significantly contributed to the total macrofaunal density. Other dominant opportunistic species included Obelia bidentata (EGII), Arcuatula senhousia (EGIII), Cirolana fluviatilis (EGII), Prionospio cirrifera (EGIV) and Capitella sp. (EGV). The overall assessment indicated a 'good to moderate' condition in AMBI, 'good to poor' condition in M-AMBI, 'high to moderate' condition in BENTIX, 'high to poor' condition in BOPA and 'moderate to poor' condition in univariate Shannon diversity index. All the multivariate indices tested in the study were correlated with each other except BOPA and M-AMBI. The group of stations dominated with a sandy substrate and a moderate level of organic content indicated high to good conditions while other stations demonstrated moderate to poor conditions.     Atotal of 72patients were retrospectively analyzed. The complexity of each case was evaluated using the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) Discrepancy Index (DI), and orthodontic clinical outcomes were evaluated using the ABO Objective Grading System (cast-radiograph evaluation C‑REval).

    The mean total ABO C‑REval score was 16 ± 9.1 in the labial appliance group and 12.7 ± 5.4 in lingual appliance group (p = 0.152). The mean total ABO-DI scores were 16.3 ± 7.3 and 15.4 ± 6.6 in the labial and lingual appliance groups, respectively (p = 0.445). A significant correlation was observed between the total DI and total C‑REval scores.

    In all, 96impressions of acadaver head with two orthodontic miniscrews in place were taken with four common impression materials by two observers and using two methods of application. After pouring with astandard typeIV stone and abutment transfer, all models and the upper jaw (which had been separated from the head) were scanned in astandard model scanner (Zirkonzahn® [Zirkohnzahn GmbH, Gais, Italy] S600 ARTI) and evaluated using acomputer-aided design (***) program (GOM-Inspect [Gesellschaft für optische Messtechnik m.b.H., Braunschweig, Germany]). The deviations were measured at six points per screw and statistically evaluated with SPSS® (IBM, Chicago, IL, USA).

Partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), multiple experiment viewer (MEV), odor activity value (OAV), and least-significant difference analyzes were then applied to clarify the best fixation method for forming a chestnut-like aroma and associated compounds, and to explore the change law of key volatile compounds using different green tea fixation processes. One hundred and eighty-four volatile compounds were detected in the irectional processing of high-quality green tea with a chestnut-like aroma.Fructophilic lactic acid bacteria (FLAB) are a recently discovered group whose main characteristic is to prefer D-fructose over D-glucose. In this study, laboratory cocoa beans fermentation was analyzed by Illumina-based amplicon sequencing, indicating the presence of potential FLAB of the genera Fructobacillus and Lactobacillus. Eighty efficient fructose-fermenting isolates, obtained from fermenting cocoa pulp beans mass, were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Pediococcus acidilactici (n = 52), Lactobacillus plantarum (n = 10), Pediococcus pentosaceus (n = 10), Bacillus subtilis (n = 4), and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides (n = 4). The growth characteristics of all the 10 L. plantarum strains classified them as "facultatively" fructophilic bacteria, i.e., they grew on glucose without an external electron acceptor but the growth on fructose was faster. Among them, L. plantarum LPBF 35 was characterized by producing a range of aroma-impacting compounds (acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, nonanal, and octanoic acid), being introduced into a cocoa fermentation process. Although the process started with approximately equal amounts of glucose and fructose, a concomitant, but faster utilization of fructose, was observed in cocoa fermentation conducted with L. plantarum LPBF 35 (with no residual fructose observed) when compared to control fermentation using a glucophilic strain (8.77 mg/g residual fructose) and a spontaneous process (8.38 mg/g residual fructose). L. plantarum LPBF 35 also showed an ideal profile of organic acid metabolism (citric acid consumption and lactic acid production) associated with cocoa fermentation. These results proved new insights on cocoa microbial activity and brings new perspectives on the use of lactic acid bacteria as starter culture.Nitrogen is a structural component of proteins, nucleic acids, chlorophyll, hormones and amino acids. The last one and ammonium are important primary metabolites in grapes and are key compounds in winemaking since they are primary sources for yeast fermentation. Currently, grape quality has been affected due to the negative impacts of global warming and anthropogenic activity. Certain studies have reported a significant decrease in the free amino acids content and an increase in berry soluble solids and in proline biosynthesis in grapes in some grapevine varieties cultivated under warm climate conditions and water restriction. Proline is not metabolized by yeasts and stuck and sluggish fermentations can occur when the content of yeast assimilable nitrogen is low. Nitrogen composition of grape is mainly affected by variety, edaphoclimatic conditions of the vineyard and agricultural practices performed to the grapevines. This review summarized the most current research carried out to modify the nitrogen composition of the grape and give an overview of the technical and scientific aspects that should be considered for future research in this field.Since Listeria monocytogenes has a high case-fatality rate, substantial research has been devoted to estimate its growth rate under different conditions of temperature, pH and water activity (aw). In this study, published findings on L. monocytogenes growth in broth were extracted and unified by constructing meta-regression models based on cardinal models for (i) temperature (CM[T]), (ii) temperature and pH (CM[T][pH]), and (iii) temperature, pH and aw (CM[T][pH][aw]). After assessing all the sources retrieved between 1988 until 2017, forty-nine primary studies were considered appropriate for inclusion. Apart from the modelling variables, study characteristics such as type of broth (BHI, TSB, TPB), reading method (colony-forming-units, CFU; or binary-dilution optical density methods, OD), inoculum concentration and strain serotype, were also extracted. Meta-regressions based on CM[T] and CM[T][pH] were fitted on subsets of the 2009 growth rate measures and revealed that type of broth and reading method significantly modulated the cardinal parameter estimates.

  • Periodic changes of light and dark regulate numerous processes in plants. Recently, a novel type of stress caused by an extended light period has been described in Arabidopsis thaliana and was named photoperiod stress. Although photoperiod stress causes the induction of numerous stress response genes of which many are indicators of oxidative stress, the exact timing and mechanisms involved in dealing with this stress have not yet been investigated. We describe the response of the cellular redox system in wild-type Arabidopsis, the photoperiod stress sensitive cytokinin receptor mutant ahk2 ahk3 and the clock mutant cca1 lhy. Photoperiod stress caused several changes in the ROS scavenging system including a reduction of the ascorbic acid (AsA) redox status and strong peroxide formation during the night following the extended photoperiod. The changes were associated with reduced catalase (CAT) and increased apoplastic peroxidase (PRX) activities. Consistently, the expression of the apoplastic PRX genes PRX4, PRX33, PRX34 and PRX71 was strongly induced by photoperiod stress. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/mrtx1719.html We show that extending the light period by only few hours causes a stress response during the following night suggesting that the photoperiod stress response might occur in a natural setting.
    The traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula Lian Hua Qing Wen (LHQW) improves the results of COVID-19 treatment. Three very recent studies analyzed with network pharmacology some working mechanisms of LHQW. However, we used more techniques and also included Angiotensin converting enzyme 2(ACE2) (a SARS-CoV receptor, possibly the viral entry point in alveolar lung cells) and the immune system, as cytokine storm is essential in the late phase.

Moreover, it also relieves the "cytokine storm" and improves ACE2-expression-disorder-caused symptoms. These innovative findings give a rational pharmacological basis and support for treating COVID-19 and possibly other diseases with LHQW.Cities are wrestling with the practical challenges of transitioning urban water services to become water sensitive; capable of enhancing liveability, sustainability, resilience and productivity in the face of climate change, rapid urbanisation, degraded ecosystems and ageing infrastructure. Indicators can be valuable for guiding actions for improvement, but there is not yet an established index that measures the full suite of attributes that constitute water sensitive performance. This paper therefore presents the Water Sensitive Cities (WSC) Index, a new benchmarking and diagnostic tool to assess the water sensitivity of a municipal or metropolitan city, set aspirational targets and inform management responses to improve water sensitive practices. Its 34 indicators are organised into seven goals ensure good water sensitive governance, increase community capital, achieve equity of essential services, improve productivity and resource efficiency, improve ecological health, ensure quality urban spaces, and promote adaptive infrastructure. The WSC Index design is a quantitative framework based on qualitative rating descriptions and a participatory assessment methodology, enabling local contextual interpretations of the indicators while maintaining a robust universal framework for city comparison and benchmarking. The paper demonstrates its application on three illustrative cases. Rapid uptake of the WSC Index in Australia highlights its value in helping stakeholders develop collective commitment and evidence-based priorities for action to accelerate their city's water sensitive transition. Early testing in cities in Asia, the Pacific and South Africa has also showed the potential of the WSC Index internationally.Resource recovery and emissions from sanitation systems are critical sustainability indicators for strategic urban sanitation planning. In this context, sanitation systems are the most often structured using technology-driven templates rather than performance-based sustainability indicators. In this work, we answer two questions Firstly, can we estimate generic resource recovery and loss potentials and their uncertainties for a diverse and large set of sanitation systems? And secondly, can we identify technological aspects of sanitation systems that indicate a better overall resource recovery performance? The aim is to obtain information that can be used as an input into any strategic planning process and to help shape technology development and system design for resource recovery in the future. Starting from 41 technologies, which include novel and conventional options, we build 101,548 valid sanitation system configurations. For each system configuration we quantify phosphorus, nitrogen, total solids, and woped five recommendations for the optimization of resource recovery (i) prioritize short systems that close the loop at the lowest possible level; (ii) separate waste streams as **** as possible, because this allows for higher recovery potentials; (iii) use storage and treatment technologies that contain the products as **** as possible, avoid leaching technologies (e.g. single pits) and technologies with high risk of volatilization (e.g. drying beds); (iv) design sinks to optimise recovery and avoid disposal sinks; and (v) combine various reuse options for different side streams (e.g. urine diversion systems that combine reuse of urine and production of biofuel from faeces).
