Leather processing requires substantial inputs of energy, water and chemicals. Additionally, it generates significant amounts of liquid and solid waste, severely impacting the environment. Processing 1 Mg of raw hides yields up to 600-700 kg of waste, considerable amounts of which are solid tannery waste. Such waste contains chromium (Cr) compounds, which are commonly used as tanning agents. This paper reviews solid tannery waste treatment technologies, with emphasis on waste incineration in a specially designed experimental tunnel incinerator. Three different types of tannery waste were subjected to tests trimmings, shavings and buffing dust. As the research revealed, the process can be applied to all types of solid tannery waste. Moreover, it enables the reuse of the heat of the process and results in a Cr concentrate in the process residues. The conducted analyses (carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen elemental analysis; inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy; powder X‑ray diffraction) proved that there is no or little organic content in the obtained residual ash, which contains up to 53.1%(w/w) Cr in the form of Cr (III) oxide. Such material may be used as a Cr ore substitute in the chemical or metallurgical industries.This paper reports on a new system for liquid density and viscosity measurement based on a freely suspended rectangular vibrating plate actuated by piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) actuators. The Lamb mode used for these measurements allows us to infer both the density and viscosity in a larger range as compared to the existing gold-standard techniques of MEMS resonators. The combination of the measured resonance frequency and quality factor enables extraction of density and viscosity of the surrounding liquid. The system is calibrated while performing measurements in water glycerol solutions with a density range from 997 to 1264 kg/m3 and viscosity from 1.22 to 985 mPa·s, which is a larger dynamic range compared to existing mechanical resonators showing an upper limit of 700 mPa·s. The out-of-plane vibrating mode exhibits quality factor of 169, obtained in deionized water (1.22 mPa·s viscosity), and 93 for pure glycerol with a viscosity of 985 mPa·s. This Lamb wave resonating sensor can achieve measurement in fairly large viscosity media while keeping a quality factor superior to 90. Measurements performed on oil validate the use of the Lamb system. Oil density is evaluated at 939 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity at 43 mPa·s which corresponds to our expected values. Both substances were significantly more efficacious than tacrine (RR = 0.67), ranitidine (RR = 0.72), and pyridostigmine (RR = 0.76), which were less efficacious but still significantly reduced the RR compared to the no-treatment group (paraoxon only). Twenty subjects with obesity underwent a hypocaloric dietary intervention for 12 weeks. Plasma leptin and ghrelin were analyzed at baseline and at the end of the intervention and in 13 normal-weight controls. Appetite ratings were analyzed. Weight loss decreased leptin synthesis (pauc less then 0.001) but not the rhythm characteristics, except the mean variability value (pmesor = 0.020). By contrast, the mean ghrelin level increased after weight loss. The rhythm characteristics were also modified until a rhythm similar to the normal-weight subjects was reached. The amount of variability of leptin and ghrelin was correlated with the effectiveness of the dietary intervention (p less then 0.020 and p less then 0.001, respectively). Losing weight partially restores the daily rhythms of leptin and modifies the ghrelin rhythms, but appetite sensations are barely modified, thus confirming that these hormones cannot exercise their physiological function properly.Currently, there is an increasing focus on mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) as therapeutic option in bone pathologies as well as in general regenerative medicine. Regarding gene expression level, both human and ovine **** presented a comparable up-regulation of Runx2 and a trend toward down-regulation of Col1A during osteogenic differentiation.

By tracking the ongoing formation and dissipation of putative functional modules across time and space, we explored the age-related changes of segregation and integration and further elucidated the underlying brain network dynamics mechanism during normal aging. Results showed that aging strongly weakened dynamic global segregation while enhanced dynamic global integration across the whole brain. Aging was associated with decreasing dynamic segregation of most networks (except the cerebellum) while increasing dynamic integration of only a few networks at the large-scale network level. Notably, the fronto-parietal network, the default mode network, the visual network, and a small group of nodes from these networks, whose dynamic segregation and integration, were both modulated by age. These findings provide direct evidence that there are remarkable changes of dynamic network architecture across the human adult lifespan and suggest the age-related modulations of dynamic segregation and integration intuitively reflect the adaptive changes of the functional dedifferentiation and compensation in older adults. We investigated whether intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) can improve the spatial cognitive function of rats with hypertension-induced cerebral small vessel disease. To prove our hypothesis, stroke-prone renovascular hypertensive rats (RHRSPs) were treated with iTBS beginning at postoperative week 22. The Morris water maze was performed to assess spatial cognitive function. The expression of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) subunits NR1, NR2A and NR2B, calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIα (CaMKIIα), p-CaMKIIα and α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor subunit 1 (GluR1) in the hippocampus were evaluated by western blot analysis. The distribution of GluR1, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule-1 (IBa-1) in the CA1 and CA3 regions and dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus were evaluated by immunofluorescence analysis. Treatment with iTBS significantly improved the spatial cognitive function of RHRSPs, increased the expression of NR2B, p-CaMKIIα and GluR1 in the hippocampus, and decreased the proliferation of astrocytes and microglia. It is thus necessary to promote PPE rational use, highlighting possible differences in terms of efficacy among them and promoting an effective technique to reuse them. METHODS A literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane database, and Google Scholar and from 25 top cited papers, 15 were selected for relevance and impact. RESULTS Most studies on prior respiratory virus epidemic to date suggest surgical masks not to be inferior compared with N95 respirators in terms of protective efficacy among health care workers. The use of N95 respirators should be then limited in favor of high-risk situations. Concerning respirators reuse, highly energetic short-wave ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) at 254 nm was proficiently applied to determine N95 respirators decontamination from viral respiratory agents, but it requires careful consideration of the type of respirator and of the biological target. CONCLUSIONS Rational use and successful reuse of respirators can help facing PPE shortening during a pandemic. Further evidences testing UVGI and other decontamination techniques are an unmet need. Advanced machine learning algorithms including random forest, gradient boosted decision tree, single-task deep neural network and multitask deep neural network are employed to construct efficient 2D-fingerprint based models. Additionally, appropriate consensus models are built to further enhance the performance of 2D-fingerprint-based methods. It is demonstrated that 2D-fingerprint-based models perform as well as the state-of-the-art 3D structure-based models for the predictions of toxicity, solubility, partition coefficient and protein-ligand binding affinity based on only ligand information. Methods Seventy-nine patients who received surgical treatment for infective spondylodiscitis were divided into a combined antero-posterior (AP) group and a posterior-only (P) group. Significant differences in pre- and post-operative radiographic and clinical characteristics between the 2 groups were identified, and univariate and stepwise multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the factors that affected the decision for treatment approach between the 2 groups. Results Preoperatively, initial height loss, wedge angle, and kyphotic angle were significantly higher in the AP group. However, estimated blood loss, operation time, and last visual analogue scale score for **** pain were significantly lower in the P group. There was no difference in post-operative time to reach solid fusion. Post-operative corrected kyphotic angle was 12.8° in the AP group and 5.3° in the P group. The regional wedge angle was identified as a factor that influenced use of the combined antero-posterior approach, with a sensitivity of 60%, and specificity of 89.8% at the optimal cut-off value of 8.2°. Patients were divided into two groups (1) Lost to follow-up (LTF), defined as patients who had missed >2 consecutive follow-up visits and had not attended their 1-year follow-up appointment; and (2) Not lost to follow-up. For the not-LTF cohort, PROMs (ODI, VAS ****/leg, SF-12 Physical/Mental, PROMIS) and return to activities data were collected prospectively at each follow-up. For LTF patientstients who are lost to follow-up do not fare worse than those who do follow-up. Applying a classification model, we determined a PharmaFlow score of 89.4 as the threshold to predict response to chemotherapy. Using this threshold, we found that in 84.2% of cases patient's cell response ex vivo predicted the observed clinical response and performed similarly or better than prognostic subgroups determined by cytogenetic characteristics. Here, we knocked-down the expression of both Scrib and Dlg1 in human DCs and then evaluated the expression of co-stimulatory molecules and cytokine production during maturation. We demonstrated that Scrib is necessary for adequate CD86 expression, while Dlg1 is important for CD83 up-regulation and IL-6 production upon maturation, suggesting that Scrib and Dlg1 participate in separate pathways in DCs. Additionally, both proteins are required for adequate IL-12 production after maturation. Furthermore, we showed that the inefficient maturation of DCs induced by Scrib or Dlg1 depletion leads to impaired T cell activation. Despite the fact that IL-15 serves multiple functions in its therapeutic potential for the induction and maintenance of T cell response, the exact role of PI3K-Akt in IL-15 increased adaptive immunity is still poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that ex vivo IL-15 administration increased BMPC capability of antigen uptake and the expression of costimulatory molecules (such as CD80 and 4-1BB(CD137) ligand [4-1BBL]) and ****class I molecule via PI3K-Akt pathway. Importantly, PI3K-Akt activity was not only necessary for IL-15 augmented BMPC cross-presentation and CTL priming, but also facilitated IL-15 increased therapeutic potential of the cytolytic capacity and maintenance of BMPC-activated T cells. Re-entry injuries may lead to massive bleeding, which can be difficult to control due to poor accessibility. The aim of the study was to assess early outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis, as well as safety and feasibility. METHODS Forty-five patients received a video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis before resternotomy between April 1, 2016 and January 1, 2019. Records were reviewed for demographics, perioperative and early postoperative (Postop) outcomes. RESULTS The median age of the population was 73 years with a EUROSCORE II of 8.322. Only 1 (2.22%) patient experienced a major and 2 (4.44%) a minor re-entry injury. This resulted in a mean peroperative and 24-hour Postop blood loss of, respectively, 675.72 (range 5-2862) and 444.71 mL (range 0-2100). There was no significant difference between the use of minimally invasive and classic extracorporeal circulation (P = .276 and P = .81, respectively). Twenty-nine patients (64%) were not in need of red blood cell transfusion. A survival rate of 93.33% could be achieved. No deaths (n = 3) were related to the video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis or re-entry injuries. Kidney function remained stale postoperatively with creatinine preoperative and Postop levels of 1.56 (95%confidence interval 1.07-2.05) and 1.43 (95%CI, 1.05-1.81) mg/dL (P = .264). Despite high-risk surgery, the median length of stay was 8 days. CONCLUSION A video-assisted thoracoscopic approach allows for a safe and effective adhesiolysis, due to increased visibility and accuracy. METHODS Cystometry recording intravesical pressure (IVP) and intravesical volume (IVV) of rhythmic voiding contractions caused by a constant saline infusion (0.04 mL/min) were carried out in forty urethane-anesthetized female Sprague-Dawley rats, and the PVA was established by plotting IVP against IVV. RESULTS Pressure-volume points shaped coincident enclosed loops, and loop-associated urodynamic parameters kept stable under a constant infusion rate (0.04 mL/min). Enhancing preload (by elevating infusion rates to 0.08 and 0.12 mL/min) increased the area enclosed by the loop (Apv) and shifted loops to the right and slightly upward. Augmenting afterload (by enhancing resistances using 1/4 and 1/2 urethra clamping) increased Apv and shifted loops markedly to the right and upward.

Despite the fact that IL-15 serves multiple functions in its therapeutic potential for the induction and maintenance of T cell response, the exact role of PI3K-Akt in IL-15 increased adaptive immunity is still poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that ex vivo IL-15 administration increased BMPC capability of antigen uptake and the expression of costimulatory molecules (such as CD80 and 4-1BB(CD137) ligand [4-1BBL]) and MHC class I molecule via PI3K-Akt pathway. Importantly, PI3K-Akt activity was not only necessary for IL-15 augmented BMPC cross-presentation and CTL priming, but also facilitated IL-15 increased therapeutic potential of the cytolytic capacity and maintenance of BMPC-activated T cells. Re-entry injuries may lead to massive bleeding, which can be difficult to control due to poor accessibility. The aim of the study was to assess early outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis, as well as safety and feasibility. METHODS Forty-five patients received a video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis before resternotomy between April 1, 2016 and January 1, 2019. Records were reviewed for demographics, perioperative and early postoperative (Postop) outcomes. RESULTS The median age of the population was 73 years with a EUROSCORE II of 8.322. Only 1 (2.22%) patient experienced a major and 2 (4.44%) a minor re-entry injury. This resulted in a mean peroperative and 24-hour Postop blood loss of, respectively, 675.72 (range 5-2862) and 444.71 mL (range 0-2100). There was no significant difference between the use of minimally invasive and classic extracorporeal circulation (P = .276 and P = .81, respectively). Twenty-nine patients (64%) were not in need of red blood cell transfusion. A survival rate of 93.33% could be achieved. No deaths (n = 3) were related to the video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis or re-entry injuries. Kidney function remained stale postoperatively with creatinine preoperative and Postop levels of 1.56 (95%confidence interval 1.07-2.05) and 1.43 (95%CI, 1.05-1.81) mg/dL (P = .264). Despite high-risk surgery, the median length of stay was 8 days. CONCLUSION A video-assisted thoracoscopic approach allows for a safe and effective adhesiolysis, due to increased visibility and accuracy. RESULTS Pressure-volume points shaped coincident enclosed loops, and loop-associated urodynamic parameters kept stable under a constant infusion rate (0.04 mL/min). Enhancing preload (by elevating infusion rates to 0.08 and 0.12 mL/min) increased the area enclosed by the loop (Apv) and shifted loops to the right and slightly upward. Background Parent-child interaction therapies are commonly used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) when providing services to young children with language learning difficulties. However, the way parents react to the demands of such interventions is clearly important, especially for those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Parents play a central role in the therapy process so to ensure parent engagement, and to maximize intervention effectiveness, parents' views must be considered. Aims To explore the expectations and experiences of parents from socially disadvantaged backgrounds who had taken part in a parent-child interaction programme aimed at promoting language development in 2-3 year olds with language difficulties. Methods & procedures The sample included parents who had a child aged 2-3 years and had attended a parent-child interaction programme to promote their child's language development. Parents were eligible to take part if they were living in the 30% most deprived areas in a city in thcularly important for families living with social disadvantage. Supporting parent engagement in parent-child interaction programmes can contribute to the parents' capability to continue implementing language-promoting strategies outside the intervention context and beyond the end of therapy. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? Parents have different expectations regarding programme involvement. Therefore, having a two-way, open dialogue between parents and SLTs from the beginning is clearly important, not only as a way of sharing information but also to build on parents' understanding of what the intervention will involve and trust that the SLT will be able to deliver the intervention in collaboration with the parent. SLTs can enhance parent engagement by supporting parents to feel confident and providing reassurance in terms of their child's development and how they can support their child's language learning.Trends in people having children later in life and increasing evidence of male age-related fertility decline (ARFD) has led some to propose sperm freezing as a suitable response. However, little consideration has been given to how men might respond to such a proposal, and there has been a paucity of empirical data to inform such a consideration. This paper arises from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with men (n = 25) who do not have children but want or expect to have them in the future. Data on men's perceptions of male ARFD and sperm freezing are presented and discussed in accordance with theoretical and conceptual tools relating to reproductive masculinity, biomedicalisation, gendered risk perception and meanings of sperm and masculinity. It suggests that that men's overall lack of concern regarding male ARFD and resistance towards ideas of sperm freezing result not only from a lack of exposure to evidence regarding male ARFD but are also shaped by ideals of reproductive masculinity, and may indicate resistance towards the idea of reproductive control. It argues that these positions perpetuate a gender unequal politicisation of ARFD and perpetuate particular gendered subjectivities relating to culpability and responsibility for guarding against risks of ARFD.This study aimed to identify novel long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using publicly available tissue genomic datasets, and validate their diagnostic utility for early-stage HCC. Differentially expressed lncRNAs between 371 HCC and 50 non-tumor tissues were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas liver hepatocellular carcinoma (TCGA_LIHC) project. Subsequently, expression of the serum- and extracellular vesicle (EV)-derived lncRNA was assessed in 10 patients with HCC and 10 healthy controls using RT-qPCR. The candidate lncRNAs were validated in 90 HCC and 92 non-HCC (29 healthy control, 28 chronic hepatitis, 35 liver cirrhosis) patients. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were calculated for the candidate lncRNAs and the current HCC biomarker, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). SFTA1P, HOTTIP, HAGLROS, LINC01419, HAGLR, CRNDE, and LINC00853 were markedly up-regulated in HCC in TCGA_LIHC dataset. Among them, LINC00853 has not been reported in relation to HCC before. In patients with HCC, only expression of small EV-derived LINC00853 (EV-LINC00853) was increased. EV-LINC00853 showed excellent discriminatory ability in the diagnosis of all-stage HCC (AUC=0.934, 95% CI=0.887-0.966). Moreover, using a 14-fold increase and 20 ng/mL as cut-offs for EV-LINC00853 expression and AFP level, respectively, EV-LINC00853 was found to have a sensitivity of 93.75% and specificity of 89.77%, while AFP showed only 9.38% sensitivity and 72.73% specificity for the diagnosis of early-stage HCC (mUICC stage I). EV-LINC00853 had a positivity of 97% and 67% in AFP-negative and AFP-positive early HCC, respectively. The variations within Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) gene might constitute the first genetic gateway, influencing the spatial transmission dynamics of COVID-19. The Human Leukocyte Antigen locus, a master regulator of immunity against infection seems to be crucial in influencing susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 and can be the second genetic gateway. The genes regulating Toll-like receptor and complement pathways and subsequently cytokine storm induced exaggerated inflammatory pathways seem to underlie the severity of COVID-19, and such genes might represent the third genetic gateway. Host-pathogen interaction is a complex event and some additional genes might also contribute to the dynamics of COVID-19. Overall, these three genetic gateways proposed here might be the critical host determinants governing the risk, severity, and outcome of COVID-19. Genetic variations within these gateways could be key in influencing geographical discrepancies of COVID-19.

Differentially expressed lncRNAs between 371 HCC and 50 non-tumor tissues were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas liver hepatocellular carcinoma (TCGA_LIHC) project. Subsequently, expression of the serum- and extracellular vesicle (EV)-derived lncRNA was assessed in 10 patients with HCC and 10 healthy controls using RT-qPCR. The candidate lncRNAs were validated in 90 HCC and 92 non-HCC (29 healthy control, 28 chronic hepatitis, 35 liver cirrhosis) patients. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were calculated for the candidate lncRNAs and the current HCC biomarker, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). SFTA1P, HOTTIP, HAGLROS, LINC01419, HAGLR, CRNDE, and LINC00853 were markedly up-regulated in HCC in TCGA_LIHC dataset. Among them, LINC00853 has not been reported in relation to HCC before. In patients with HCC, only expression of small EV-derived LINC00853 (EV-LINC00853) was increased. EV-LINC00853 showed excellent discriminatory ability in the diagnosis of all-stage HCC (AUC=0.934, 95% CI=0.887-0.966). Moreover, using a 14-fold increase and 20 ng/mL as cut-offs for EV-LINC00853 expression and AFP level, respectively, EV-LINC00853 was found to have a sensitivity of 93.75% and specificity of 89.77%, while AFP showed only 9.38% sensitivity and 72.73% specificity for the diagnosis of early-stage HCC (mUICC stage I). METHODS This substudy of BRAIN-ICU included a subgroup of 75 critically ill medical/surgical patients determined to be at medium risk of having pre-existing dementia (Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly [IQCODE] score ≥3.3). We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV), and AUC for the standard AD8 cutoff of ≥2 versus the reference standard CDR score of ≥1 for mild dementia. RESULTS By the CDR, 38 patients had very mild or no dementia and 37 had mild dementia or greater. For diagnosing mild dementia, the AD8 had a sensitivity of 97% (95% CI 86-100), a specificity of 16% (6-31), a PPV of 53% (40-65), an NPV of 86% (42-100), and an AUC of 0.738 (0.626-0.850). CONCLUSIONS Among critically ill patients judged at risk for pre-existing dementia, the 2- to 3-min AD8 is highly sensitive and has a high NPV. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of single-dose NP in treating nasal symptoms and secretion during challenge in an allergen challenge chamber (ACC). Furthermore, the effect of this treatment on biomarkers and immune cells of the allergic cascade were measured. METHODS This open-label, cross-over, sequence-randomized, monocentric trial randomized 18 adults with SAR and a positive skin ***** test reaction to Dactylis glomerata pollen to receive NP or no treatment during two 4-h ACC sessions 3 weeks apart. On Day 1, 9 subjects were challenged for 4 h with treatment, the other 9 without treatment, and vice versa on Day 22. Nasal lavage fluid and nasal filter eluate samples were obtained pre, 2, and 18 h post challenge in the ACC. RESULTS NP significantly reduced nasal symptoms, assessed by total nasal symptom score (p less then 0.001), and minimized nasal secretion (p = 0.047), while no significant effect on biomarkers and immune cells in the nasal fluid was observed. The treatment was safe and well-tolerated. CONCLUSIONS The physical barrier built by NP nasal gel can be safely applied in patients with allergic rhinitis. All participants were divided into 5 groups no exposure, born after 1961; fetal life exposure, between 1959 and 1961; early childhood exposure, between 1956 and 1958; mid-childhood exposure, between 1953 and 1955; and late childhood exposure, between 1949 and 1952. Nasal lavage fluid and nasal filter eluate samples were obtained pre, 2, and 18 h post challenge in the ACC. RESULTS NP significantly reduced nasal symptoms, assessed by total nasal symptom score (p less then 0.001), and minimized nasal secretion (p = 0.047), while no significant effect on biomarkers and immune cells in the nasal fluid was observed. The treatment was safe and well-tolerated. CONCLUSIONS The physical barrier built by NP nasal gel can be safely applied in patients with allergic rhinitis. METHODS Data were obtained from the wave 2009 of the China Health and Nutrition Survey. MS was identified when 3 or more of the following components happened (1) waist circumference >90 cm in males or >85 cm in females; (2) fasting glucose ≥6.1 mmol/L; (3) systolic blood pressure ≥130 mm Hg/diabolic blood pressure ≥85 mm Hg; (4) fasting triglyceride ≥1.70 mmol/L; and (5) high-density lipids cholesterol less then 1.04 mmol/L. All participants were divided into 5 groups no exposure, born after 1961; fetal life exposure, between 1959 and 1961; early childhood exposure, between 1956 and 1958; mid-childhood exposure, between 1953 and 1955; and late childhood exposure, between 1949 and 1952. Further, we compared CS015 with ferumoxytol and ferumoxtran-10 in MR lymphography and found that CS015 had the best performance. And the lymph node metastases in New Zealand rabbits were successfully detected using CS015 with one single dose. Results A total of 48 patients with Horner syndrome were included. Median age at diagnosis was 12 months (range, 1 month to 17 years). A serious etiology was discovered in 7 (15%) neuroblastoma in 5, nasopharyngeal carcinoma in 1, and desmoid tumor in 1. Other causes were congenital/idiopathic (27 [56%]), acquired/idiopathic (10 [21%]), and likely birth trauma (4 [8%]). In 3 patients with a serious etiology, there were significant clinical manifestations of the pathology in addition to Horner syndrome. In the other 4 cases with a serious etiology (all neuroblastoma), the patients presented with Horner syndrome in isolation, and the tumor was discovered during a routine workup. All 5 neuroblastoma cases presented before 5 years of age; urine catecholamines were elevated in 4 of the 5. Imaging revealed mass lesions in the neck or upper chest in all 7 cases with a serious etiology. Conclusions In children presenting with Horner syndrome of unknown cause, there is a small but nontrivial risk of a serious underlying etiology. The DBS were collected at 1 week and 4 weeks of age from 45 preterm infants (27 no-ROP and 18 P-ROP). The DBS were linked to hospital records and then deidentified. ICD-9 codes were used to identify P-ROP cases. Hormones levels were measured via electrochemiluminescence assays on the Meso Scale Discovery platform. Associations between hormone levels at 1 and 4 weeks of age and the presence or absence of P-ROP were assessed. Results In female infants, we noted a trend toward higher LH levels in ROP cases at week 1 (P = 0.11) and significantly higher LH levels in cases at week 4 (P = 0.03). In male infants, no ROP-related differences in LH levels were found at either time point. For hCG levels, no associations with P-ROP were found in either sex at either time point. Aims To address these issues, we aimed to modify an existing group social cognitive intervention entitled 'Social Cognition and Interaction Training' (SCIT) to be delivered through a virtual world environment (Second Life ©). Methods A single arm nonrandomized proof-of-concept trial of SCIT-VR was conducted. Five groups of three to five individuals per group were recruited over 6 months. Eight sessions of SCIT-VR therapy were delivered through the virtual world platform Second Life© over a 5-week intervention window. Feasibility was examined using recruitment rates and retention. Acceptability was examined using qualitative methods. Secondary outcomes including social cognitive indices, functioning, and anxiety were measured pre- and postintervention. Results The SCIT-VR therapy delivered was feasible (36% consent rate and 73.3% intervention completion rate), acceptable (high overall postsession satisfaction scores) and safe (no serious adverse events), and had high levels of participant satisfaction. Users found the environment immersive. Prepost changes were found in emotion recognition scores and levels of anxiety. There were no signs of clinical deterioration on any of the secondary measures. Conclusion This proof-of-concept pilot trial suggested that delivering SCIT-VR through a virtual world is feasible and acceptable. There were some changes in prepost outcome measures that suggest the intervention has face validity. There is sufficient evidence to support a larger powered randomized controlled trial. Psychotic disorders are characterized by delusion, hallucination, and reality impairments. This study investigates the relationship between narcolepsy and psychotic disorders. Design and Methods This study involves patients who were diagnosed with narcolepsy between January 2002 and December 2011 (n = 258) and age- and gender-matched controls (n = 2580) from Taiwan's National Health Insurance database. Both the patients and the controls were monitored from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2011 to identify any occurrence of a psychotic disorder. Drugs that have been approved for treating narcolepsy immediate-release methylphenidate (IR-MPH), osmotic controlled-release formulations of methylphenidate (OROS-MPH), and modafinil, were analyzed. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the potential comorbidity of narcolepsy with psychotic disorders. Results During the study period, 8.1% of the narcoleptic patients exhibited comorbidity with a psychotic disorder, whereas only 1.5% of the control subjects (1.5%) had psychotic disorders (aOR, 4.07; 95% CI, 2.21-7.47). Of the narcolepsy patients, 41.5, 5.4, and 13.2% were treated with MPH-IR, MPH-OROS, and modafinil, accordingly. Pharmacotherapy for narcolepsy did not significantly affect the risk of exhibiting a psychotic disorder. Conclusions This nationwide study revealed that narcolepsy and psychotic disorders commonly co-occur. Pharmacotherapy for narcolepsy was not associated with the risk of psychotic disorders. Acknowledging these differences, a preterm behavioral phenotype has been proposed and increasingly recognized, highlighting the unique, frequent co-occurrence of symptomatology associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and anxiety disorders. The current state-of-the-art review provides a comprehensive characterization of this phenotype to date and further highlights key knowledge gaps primarily regarding the evolution of symptoms, co-occurrence of disorders and/or symptomatology within the phenotype, and associations of the phenotype with chronological age and degree of prematurity. Therefore, the identification and functional study of ORs are essential to better understand olfactory mechanisms in insects. OR studies on Diptera insects are primarily performed on Drosophila and mosquitoes, but few studies have been reported in Tephritidae. In this study, we examined three candidate ORs (BminOR3, BminOR12, and BminOR16) from Bactrocera minax. Our analysis of tissue expression revealed that the three BminORs were expressed in the antennae, with no difference between the male and female. In in vitro heterologous expression system of Xenopus oocytes. BminOR3/BminOrco responded strongly to 1-octen-3-ol, BminOR12/BminOrco responded to eight compounds [methyl salicylate, benzaldehyde, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, butyl acrylate, butyl propionate, 1-octanol, (S)-(+)-carvone and benzyl alcohol], and BminOR16/BminOrco slightly responded to undecanol.

OBJECTIVE Nulliparous obese women are at increased risk of labor induction and cesarean delivery (CD). We sought to determine whether the combination of a transvaginal Foley balloon plus misoprostol prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) is superior to misoprostol alone in reducing the risk for CD. STUDY DESIGN We undertook a multicenter, open-label, comparative-effectiveness randomized clinical trial of nulliparous obese women with unfavorable cervix (Bishop's score ≤ 6) undergoing labor induction from January 2016 to June 2018 at three tertiary centers. Those at 6, further management was deferred to treating physicians. Primary outcome was the rate of CD. Secondary maternal outcomes included duration of induction-to-delivery interval, occurrence of tachysystole, clinical chorioamnionitis, need for operative vaginal delivery, as well as a composite of maternal morbidity (postpartum endometritis, surgical-site infection, venous thromboembolism, need for transfusion, intensive care unit admission, and maternal death). Secogroups (8.8 vs. 16.2%, p = 0.09, RR 0.54, 95% CI 0.27-1.11). The total duration of the induction-to-delivery interval was also similar between the groups (24.8 ± 13.8 vs. 24.5 ± 14.0 hours, p = 0.87) regardless of the mode of delivery. No differences were seen in the indications for CD and secondary maternal or neonatal outcomes. CONCLUSION In this trial of nulliparous obese women undergoing labor induction, cervical ripening with combined Foley balloon and PGE1 resulted in similar CD rates than ripening with vaginal PGE1 alone. STUDY DESIGN Infants were identified in the MarketScan Commercial and Multi-State Medicaid databases. Outpatient RSV IP receipt and relative less then 29 wGA/term hospitalization risks in 2012 to 2014 and 2014 to 2016 were assessed using rate ratios and a difference-in-difference model. RESULTS Outpatient RSV IP receipt by infants less then 29 wGA and aged less then 3 months in the Commercial and Medicaid populations and those aged 3 to less then 6 months in the Medicaid population declined after 2014. Relative RSVH risks for infants less then 29 wGA were numerically greater after 2014, with infants aged less then 3 months and Medicaid infants experiencing the greatest increases. Difference-in-difference results indicated a significantly increased relative risk of RSVH for infants less then 29 wGA versus term (both cohorts aged 0 to less then 6 months) in the Medicaid-insured population (1.68, p = 0.0054). A nonsignificant increase of similar magnitude occurred in the commercially insured population (1.57, p = 0.2867). CONCLUSION The 2014 policy change was associated with a decrease in RSV IP use and an increase in RSVH risk among otherwise healthy infants less then 29 wGA. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared among women with amniotomy versus women with intact membranes and no amniotomy at six 2-hour time intervals before oxytocin initiation, 0 to 3 days. Amniotomy was not associated with postpartum or neonatal complications. CONCLUSION Among a contemporary cohort of nulliparous women undergoing term labor induction, amniotomy was associated with either lower or similar odds of cesarean delivery and other adverse outcomes, compared with no amniotomy.
