Certain surgical pathologies such as degloving anterior abdominal wall trauma injuries and peritoneal visceral volume and cavity disproportion render it nearly impossible for the attending surgeon to close the abdomen in the first initial laparotomy. In such surgical clinical scenarios leaving the abdomen open might be lifesaving. Forceful closure might lead to abdominal compartment syndrome and impair respiratory status of the patient. Open abdomen closure techniques have evolved over time from protection of abdominal viscera to complex fascia retraction prevention techniques. Silo bags, i.e., (Bogotá Bags), are relatively cheap, available materials used as a temporary abdominal closure method in limited resources settings. Despite its limitations of not preventing fascia retraction and draining of peritoneal fluid, it protects the abdominal viscera. We report a case of a 29-year-old male who developed incisional anterior abdominal wall wound dehiscence. He was scheduled for emergency explorative laparotomy. Intraoperatively, multiple attempts to reduce grossly dilated edematous bowels into the peritoneal cavity and fascia approximation into the midline were not possible. A urinary collection bag was sutured on the skin edges as a temporary abdominal closure method in prevention of abdominal compartment syndrome. He fared well postoperatively and eventually underwent abdominal incisional wound closure. In emergency abdominal surgeries done in limited surgical material resource settings were primary abdominal closure is not possible at initial laparotomy, sterile urine collection bags as alternatives to the standard Bogota bags as temporary abdominal closure materials can be safely used. These are relatively easily available and can be safely used until definite surgical intervention is achieved with relatively fewer complications.This case outlines recurrent neutropenia after fourteen years of successful clozapine use. He was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis based on an abnormal amylase level and abdomen computed tomography (CT) and later found to be infected by SARS-CoV-2, by a positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test.Isolated insertional ruptures of the pectoralis minor tendon at the coracoid process are a rare condition. Hitherto, very few cases have been reported in the literature. A precise diagnosis is often difficult to obtain and commonly requires advanced imaging to confirm the suspicion and rule out concomitant injuries. All cases reported in the literature to date have been treated conservatively, with excellent results and no further complications. Here, however, we present the case of a patient who had developed a subclavian vein thrombosis. Furthermore, we provide an overview over and draw comparisons to the cases described in the literature. Despite the effectiveness of the conservative treatment, physicians should be aware that adverse events may occur.
    Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) rarely occurs in multiple joints. Furthermore, the existence of left-right asymmetric OCDs in different joints of the contralateral side of the body and lesions occurring with a temporal difference is rare. Here, we report a rare case with multiple OCDs sequentially detected in various joints.
    . The 15-year-old male patient was referred to our hospital for an OCD in the medial femoral condyle of the left knee. He had a history of an OCD in his right elbow, and his father had a history of surgically treated OCDs in both knees. One year and five months after, surgery was performed to the lesion in his left medial femoral condyle, a new OCD lesion occurred in the femoral trochlea of the same knee, which was again treated surgically. Five months after the second surgery, the patient returned with pain in the right knee, and an OCD on the right femoral trochlea was detected by an MRI scan. This lesion remained stable without any further restriction in physical activities for 17 months until detachment occurred and was again treated surgically.

    In cases with history and a family history of multiple OCDs, in particular, with a short stature, an MRI scan should be performed for the symptomatic joint to detect and treat the lesion before progression.

An MRI study did not show any bone injury or tendinous tethering. So the cause could be a subclinical compartment syndrome. Treatment consisted of a z-plasty and application of a pulvertaft suture to the flexor hallucis longus. Following a short rehabilitation program (2 weeks), the patient made a full recovery.

    The epidemiology of early acute myocardial infarctions after kidney transplantation has not been well characterized. This study sought to examine the incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of early acute myocardial infarctions or EAMI in kidney transplant recipients.

This paper is divided into four sections. First, we discuss the host immune responses that we engage with vaccines. Second, we discuss how in vivo and in vitro studies can inform vaccine design. Third, we discuss different vaccine modalities that have been licensed or are in testing in humans. Last, we overview the basic principles of vaccine approvals. Method Thirty younger and 30 older adults heard sentences related to one of four images presented on a computer monitor. They were asked to touch the image corresponding to the final word of the sentence (target word). Three conditions were used a nonpredictive sentence, a predictive sentence suggesting one of the four images on the screen (semantic context), and a predictive sentence suggesting two possible images (semantic competition). Results Online eye gaze data showed no age-related differences with nonpredictive sentences, but revealed slowed processing for older adults when context was presented. With the addition of semantic competition to context, older adults were slower to look at the target word after it had been heard. In contrast, offline latency analysis did not show age-related differences in the effects of context and competition. As expected, older adults were generally slower to touch the image than younger adults. Conclusions Traditional offline measures were not able to reveal the complex effect of aging on spoken semantic context processing. Online eye gaze measures suggest that older adults were slower than younger adults to predict an indicated object based on semantic context. Semantic competition affected online processing for older adults more than for younger adults, with no accompanying age-related differences in latency. This supports an early age-related inhibition deficit, interfering with processing, and not necessarily with response execution.Purpose The aims of the study were to explore responses of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) to rich vocabulary instruction and to identify potential factors that contribute to outcomes. Method Children with DLD participated in a language intervention embedded within a science camp. Using parent and clinician reports, standardized tests, probes, notes, and video, we derived descriptions of seven of the campers who received a vocabulary intervention that incorporated principles of rich instruction. We present them here as a case series. Results Five cases responded to the intervention with modest gains in Tier 2 science vocabulary and science knowledge. One case demonstrated no response, and another was unable to complete the intervention. The latter two cases presented with triple risks DLD, executive function deficits, and stressors associated with poverty. In comparison, the best responder also lived in poverty and had DLD, but he had intact executive function, strengths in extant vocabulary, stronger knowledge of science, better engagement in the science and language intervention activities, and was older. Other factors that seemed to contribute to outcomes included the complexity of the word forms and dosage. Conclusions Translating research on rich instruction to clinical practice is challenging. This case series motivated hypotheses about the nature of the challenge and what to do about it, the primary one being that the modest success of rich vocabulary instruction for children with DLD is not a limitation of the approach itself but rather a reflection of the difficulty of delivering the intervention while tailoring the targets, approach, and dosage to the needs of individual children with DLD. Method Through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach, the project scope included an assessment of the current state of oral care delivery, development of an Oral Care Task Force, creation of risk stratification criteria with recommended oral care products, and robust education for the clinical staff. Data were gathered using a small convenience sample of inpatients and hospital-wide HAAP rates. Results Over the 1 year of implementation and education associated with this multidisciplinary project, the organization saw an increase in oral care tools being available to patients and staff at the bedside, an increase in patients' awareness of oral care tools in their rooms, and a decrease in the overall HAAP rate. Conclusions Creating a multidisciplinary team within an acute care organization with a focus on oral care delivery can be substantially advantageous to patients and hospitals alike.

Unplanned teenage pregnancies can be considered a global public health problem due to the high impact on the present and future of these young people, as well as their possible offspring. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between self-esteem, attitudes toward love, and sexual assertiveness among pregnant and non-pregnant teenagers. We also considered whether their pregnancy was planned or not. The study was conducted with 225 women from Ecuador (34.2% pregnant; Mean age = 16; SD = 1.15). We administered self-reported measures such as the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Love Attitudes Scale, and the Sexual Assertiveness Scale between 2018 and 2019. Self-esteem was higher in adolescents with a planned pregnancy than in those women whose pregnancy was not planned. Pregnant women reported greater acceptance and endorsement of beliefs related to the myth of "soulmate" in comparison to non-pregnant women. Sexual assertiveness related to the negotiation of the use of contraceptive methods was greater in non-pregnant adolescents than in pregnant girls. We discuss the implications of our findings in terms of sexual education and prevention in the sex education field. To explore the rationality of street life facilities and understand the impact of the natural attributes of the block space (street-level greening) on the quality of the walking environment, we evaluated the walkability of Zhongshan Road in Qingdao, China and optimized the algorithm of the walk score. In this study, we selected residential areas as the starting point and modified the weight coefficients for facilities to evaluate the walkability of streets. Traditional research methods were combined with street view image capture, and the rate of the attenuation rate of Zhongshan Road is 20.48%, which is lower than the best visual perception value of 25.00%. Comparing the walking index changes before and after adding the green viewing rate, the high-scoring area shifted from the west to the south, and the west walking index has the most significant decline. Street greening has a certain impact on the quality of the walking environment. The results and conclusions of this study can be used as a reference in developing street walkability indicators and further improving the evaluation system.
    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a severe progressive interstitial lung disease. At 5-year follow-up, 15% of IPF patients develop lung cancer, which significantly reduces the survival rate. Here we review the literature on the clinical role of oncomarkers in IPF progression, and describe the trend of routine oncomarkers in IPF patients over the longest follow-up yet reported.

    A systematic search of the literature in PubMed was performed to find relevant studies published up to 24 September 2020. The most common oncomarkers were chosen to select papers related to pulmonary fibrosis. Then, 24 IPF patients and 25 non-IPF patients, followed at Careggi ILD Referral Centre and Siena Regional Referral Centre for ILD, were enrolled consecutively.

Self-esteem was higher in adolescents with a planned pregnancy than in those women whose pregnancy was not planned. Pregnant women reported greater acceptance and endorsement of beliefs related to the myth of "soulmate" in comparison to non-pregnant women. Sexual assertiveness related to the negotiation of the use of contraceptive methods was greater in non-pregnant adolescents than in pregnant girls. In this study, we selected residential areas as the starting point and modified the weight coefficients for facilities to evaluate the walkability of streets. Traditional research methods were combined with street view image capture, and the rate of the attenuation rate of Zhongshan Road is 20.48%, which is lower than the best visual perception value of 25.00%. Comparing the walking index changes before and after adding the green viewing rate, the high-scoring area shifted from the west to the south, and the west walking index has the most significant decline. Street greening has a certain impact on the quality of the walking environment.   • To evaluate perimeter trap crops for management of harlequin bug, Murgantia histrionica (Hahn), we undertook greenhouse and field experiments with mustard greens as trap crop for a collard cash crop. We confirmed that harlequin bugs prefer to immigrate to and reside on mustard. Females, however, in greenhouse cage experiments, 'commuted' to collards to lay their eggs. In separate spring and fall field plantings, using replicated 12 m by 12 m collard plots in 1-ha fields, we tested mustard planted as an adjacent perimeter trap crop, or a perimeter trap crop separated by 2 unplanted rows (2.3 m), or with no trap crop. Adults accumulated on the spring mustard crop but overall numbers remained low, with all collards sustaining less then 1% leaves damaged.     The transition from home to a nursing home is a stressful event for both older persons and informal caregivers. Currently, this transition process is often fragmented, which can create a vicious cycle of healthcare-related events. Knowledge of existing care interventions can prevent or break this cycle. This project aims to summarize existing interventions for improving transitional care, identifying their effectiveness and key components.

    A scoping review was performed within the European TRANS-SENIOR consortium. The databases PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Medline, and CINAHL were searched. Studies were included if they described interventions designed to improve the transition from home to a nursing home.

    17 studies were identified, describing 13 interventions. The majority of these interventions focused on nursing home adjustment with one study including the entire transition pathway. The study identified eight multi- and five single-component interventions. From the multi-component interventions, seven are initiatives on the pathway from home to a nursing home.
    The purpose of this study was to explore anxiety, worry, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in parents of children with food allergies, and to evaluate whether these three psychological outcomes could be predicted by allergy severity, intolerance of uncertainty, and food allergy self-efficacy.

    Participants were 105 parents who reported their children to have medically diagnosed food allergies. Participants were recruited to a study on parent wellbeing through an allergy clinic and social media advertisements. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing anxiety, worry, PTSS, intolerance of uncertainty, food allergy self-efficacy, and demographic and allergy information.

    In this sample, 81.0% of parents reported clinically significant worry, 42.3% met the clinical cut-off for PTSS, and 39.1% reported moderate-extremely severe anxiety. Greater intolerance of uncertainty and lower food allergy self-efficacy were associated with poorer psychological outcomes, with mixed results for allergy severity. However, intolerance of uncertainty was the only variable to consistently account for unique variance within regression models.

    This study highlights the need for greater awareness of mental health in parents of children with food allergy. The study also indicates that factors impacting on parents' perception of threat may be most strongly predictive of psychological outcomes, warranting further research. Finally, the study indicates that intolerance of uncertainty may be a promising target for psychological interventions within this population.

Colonies of Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Hymentoptera Apidae) (the honey bee) maintain a brood nest temperature within the narrow range of 34.5-35.5°C, critical for brood development. Apis mellifera invest considerable energy to maintain hive homeostasis through behavioral modification of the hive environment. Human honey-harvesting processes and removal of the honey-filled comb (a source of thermal mass) have a detrimental impact on hive temperature that requires an increased investment of energy to rectify. This additional energy demand on the bees is a form of stress to the colony and diverts workers away from other essential tasks to that of environmental management. We investigated the thermal energy loss resulting from the removal and extraction of honey, the rate of thermal loss of an Australian standard Langstroth 10 frame hive, and the effect of honey and wax as a thermal mass in unoccupied bee hive. The results demonstrate that considerable energy expenditure would be required to rectify the hive thermal environment after honey harvesting or honeycomb frame addition. Honey provides thermal mass in the beehive, acting as a thermal buffer to external temperature change, which may mediate part of the thermal losses from the simplistic design of the Langstroth hive. Identification of these impacts in current apicultural practice and hive design allows for the improvement in the design of beehives and associated practices. These improvements may reduce stress to the bee colony, increasing colony efficiency for pollination and nectar foraging.

Inclusivity/exclusivity testing showed that the assay was able to detect both Listeria species and monocytogenes strains while excluding the non-Listeria isolates. With the use of joint models of longitudinal and survival data, it is possible to dynamically adjust individual predictions regarding patient prognosis. This article aims to introduce the reader to the development of dynamic risk predictions and to provide the necessary resources to support their implementation and assessment, such as adaptable R code, and the theory behind the methodology. Furthermore, measures to assess the predictive performance of the derived predictions and extensions that could improve the predictions are presented. We illustrate personalized predictions using an online dataset consisting of patients with chronic liver disease (primary biliary cirrhosis).
    Metaphor, frequently used in chronic pain, can function as a communicative tool, facilitating understanding and empathy from others. Previous research has demonstrated that specific linguistic markers exist for areas such as pain catastrophizing, mood, as well as diagnostic categories. The current study sought to examine potential associations between the types of pain metaphors used and diagnostic category, disability, and mood.

    Use of different pain metaphors was not associated with pain intensity, however the extent to which pain interfered with daily life did have a relationship with use of metaphorical language. Preliminary support was found for an association between the use of certain pain metaphors and self-reported diagnostic categories, notably Endometriosis, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and Neuropathic pain.

In this study, we examined the moderating role of colour on the effectiveness of COVID-19 YouTube animated cartoons on health behaviour of social media users in Nigeria. We survey a total of 470 social media users in Nigeria who reported exposure to YouTube COVID-19 animated cartoons. It was found that colour significantly predict recall of YouTube animated cartoons on COVID-19. In addition, the result of the study revealed that colour significantly moderate impact ofCOVID-19 YouTube animated cartoons on health behaviour of social media users. The result further showed that exposure to COVID-19 YouTube animated cartoons will significantly predict knowledge of the virus. The result also showed that recall of messages theme in COVID-19 YouTube animated cartoons significantly predicts health behaviour of social media users. Finally, the result of the study showed that self-efficacy, task self-efficacy, coping self-efficacy, and outcome expectancy significantly predict health behaviour sustainability among social media users who are exposed to COVID-19 YouTube animated cartoon. We developed powerful, highly sensitive, and quantitative assays to measure repeat instability and copy number and used them in multiple high-throughput genetic screens to define pathways involved in regulating copy number variation. These screens revealed that rDNA stability and copy number are regulated by DNA replication, transcription, and histone acetylation.   • The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the pathogen responsible for the now pandemic disease, coronavirus disease (COVID-19).     Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is characterized by transient left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, often preceded by emotional or physical trigger. The recurrence of TTS has been investigated, however, cases of multiple recurrences are scarcely reported.

    A 79-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with the complaint of dyspnoea following emotional stress. Electrocardiogram showed terminal T-wave inversion with QT interval prolongation in anterior leads. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed severe hypokinesis of mid- and apical-anterior segments. She was diagnosed with focal TTS. After 3 months, she complained of orthopnoea subsequent to upper-respiratory infection. Coronary angiography (CAG) depicted normal coronary arteries. She had recurrence of TTS with bi-ventricular dysfunction, and complicated cardiac collapse requiring intra-aortic balloon pumping. One month after the second episode, she had dyspnoea after herpes zoster infection. She was diagnosed with recurrence of focal TTS. After 4 months, she complained of central chest pain without evident trigger factors. CAG showed no coronary artery stenosis, and left ventriculography revealed mid-inferior and apical segment akinesis. She was diagnosed with the 4th occurrence of TTS.

In addition to a substantial decrease in atherogenic low density lipoprotein (LDL) particle concentrations, several large trials have documented their potent anti-inflammatory activity. Based on our preliminary data, we showed that statins are able to decrease the proportion of pro-inflammatory macrophages (CD14+16+CD36high) in visceral adipose tissue in humans. In the present study including 118 healthy individuals (living kidney donors), a very close relationship between the pro-inflammatory macrophage proportion and LDL cholesterol levels was found. This was confirmed after adjustment for the most important risk factors. The effect of statins on the proportion of pro-inflammatory macrophages was also confirmed in an experimental model of the Prague hereditary hypercholesterolemia rat. A direct anti-inflammatory effect of fluvastatin on human macrophage polarization in vitro was documented. Based on modifying the LDL cholesterol concentrations, statins are suggested to decrease the cholesterol inflow through the lipid raft of macrophages in adipose tissue and hypercholesterolemia to enhance the pro-inflammatory macrophage phenotype polarization. On the contrary, due to their opposite effect, statins respond with anti-inflammatory activity, affecting the whole organism.Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. For analysis, the genomic DNA was extracted from 100 unrelated women peripheral blood. Polymorphisms were analyzed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay. The study showed that MDM2 rs937283 and rs937282 were significantly associated with estrogen receptor status and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status. SNPs rs1380576 and rs4245739, located in MDM4, were significantly associated with status of estrogen and progesterone receptors. Our findings suggest that rs937283 AG, rs937282 CG, rs1380576 CC, and rs4245739 AA genotypes were linked to hormonal receptor positive breast cancer and may be useful genetic markers for disease assessment.Anaemia is a public health problem that can lead to various harmful effects on physical and neurodevelopment in infants and young children (IYC). We used data from the China Nutrition Improvement Project on Children in Poor Areas (CNIPCPA), conducted in 142 national-level poor counties of 20 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities from 2016 to 2018. Our study included 103,621 6- to 23-month-old IYC selected by a stratified multistage cluster sampling design. There were 26,303, 33,443, and 43,875 IYC in the survey in 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. The overall prevalence of anaemia was 27.0% in the three years. The prevalence of anaemia was 28.0%, 27.2%, and 26.2%, and the mean haemoglobin (Hb) was 11.82, 11.81, and 11.88 g/dL in 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. The prevalence of anaemia was highest in 6- to 11-month-olds, and declined with age. There was a gap in the education level between parents. However, the percentage of education improved in the rural areas of China. Here we discuss critical cellular interactions within the tumour microenvironment in primary tumours and in liver metastases that highlight potential therapeutic targets. We also discuss recent therapeutic advances for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

  • The solubility limitation and poor gelation properties of myofibrillar proteins at low ionic strength are the most challenging obstacle to limit salt reduction in meat products. In the present study, five amino acids with different concentrations of 5, 10 15, and 20 mmol L
    , l-lysine (Lys), l-arginine (Arg), l-histidine (His), l-proline (Pro) and l-glycine (Gly), were introduced into myofibrillar protein (MP) suspensions at low ionic strength to improve solubility and gelation properties.

    The dynamic rheological analysis showed that the MPs at 100 mmol L

    To explore how video learning strategies influence students' Flipped learning (FL) achievement, deep approach to learning (DAL) and lifelong learning (LL) orientations and how DAL and LL can be promoted.

    Data were collected from 65 dental students enrolled in a 21-week clinical periodontology course. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was conducted to investigate factors and pathways affecting FL achievement, DAL, and LL.

    FL achievement was predicted by repeated and in-advance video learning strategies. In-advance, meticulous, and expanded video learning strategies directly influenced DAL, and indirectly influenced LL via DAL. LL was not affected by any of the video learning strategies but by the DAL.

    This study implies that mere implementation of FL may not guarantee more developed DAL and enhanced LL. Redesigning a course with FL should entail revisiting and revising student assessment. LL is an inclusive approach that requires the long-term cultivation of meaning, experience, insight, learning, and practice.

On exome sequencing, a novel homozygous variant (c.1580-18C > G - intron 17) in ATP8A2 was identified. A new acceptor splice site was predicted by bioinformatics tools, and functionally characterized through a minigene assay. Minigene constructs were generated by PCR-amplification of genomic sequences surrounding the variant of interest and cloning into the pCMVdi vector. The survey was administered before and after clinical experience designed to fulfill experiential curricula requirements from various nursing programs.

    The solubility limitation and poor gelation properties of myofibrillar proteins at low ionic strength are the most challenging obstacle to limit salt reduction in meat products. In the present study, five amino acids with different concentrations of 5, 10 15, and 20 mmol L , l-lysine (Lys), l-arginine (Arg), l-histidine (His), l-proline (Pro) and l-glycine (Gly), were introduced into myofibrillar protein (MP) suspensions at low ionic strength to improve solubility and gelation properties. The dynamic rheological analysis showed that the MPs at 100 mmol L NaCl containing 15/20 mmol L Lys/Arg exhibited similar gelling behaviors to MPs at 600 mmol L NaCl. Similarly, 15/20 mmol L Lys/Arg significantly increased the solubility of MPs and the water holding capacity (WHC) and gel strength of MP gels, which was comparable to those of MPs at 600 mmol L NaCl. Furthermore, Lys and Arg promoted the formation of aggregation-type gel with a dense and compact structure observed by scanning electron microscopy. The gels containing 15/20 mmol L Lys/Arg exhibited a significant increase in the proportion of immobilized water (P ). The enhancement of WHC, gel strength, and P was closely associated with the increased solubility and the dense microstructure induced by Lys and Arg with high concentrations of 15 and 20 mmol L . To explore how video learning strategies influence students' Flipped learning (FL) achievement, deep approach to learning (DAL) and lifelong learning (LL) orientations and how DAL and LL can be promoted. Data were collected from 65 dental students enrolled in a 21-week clinical periodontology course. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was conducted to investigate factors and pathways affecting FL achievement, DAL, and LL. FL achievement was predicted by repeated and in-advance video learning strategies. In-advance, meticulous, and expanded video learning strategies directly influenced DAL, and indirectly influenced LL via DAL. LL was not affected by any of the video learning strategies but by the DAL. This study implies that mere implementation of FL may not guarantee more developed DAL and enhanced LL. Redesigning a course with FL should entail revisiting and revising student assessment.   • The cobalt-seleno-based coordination complex, [Co(SePiPr2)2N2], is reported with respect to its catalytic activity in oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER, respectively) in alkaline solutions. An overpotential of 320 and 630 mV was required to achieve 10 mA cm-2 for OER and HER, respectively. The overpotential for OER of this CoSe4-containing complex is one of the lowest that has been observed until now for molecular cobalt(II) systems, under the reported conditions. In addition, this cobalt-seleno-based complex exhibits a high mass activity (14.15 A g-1) and a **** higher turn-over frequency (TOF) value (0.032 s-1) at an overpotential of 300 mV. These observations confirm analogous ones already reported in the literature pertaining to the potential of molecular cobalt-seleno systems as efficient OER electrocatalysts.Nearly 59,000 human deaths worldwide are attributable to rabies annually, of which more than a third occur in Africa. In recent years, progress has been made in both action and collaboration including implementation of surveillance and prevention measures. In this review we assess the scale of surveillance, preventive, and control efforts of canine-transmitted human rabies in African countries. We reviewed literature published from 2014 to 2018, retrieved from electronic databases including MEDLINE, Global Index Medicus, BIOSIS, Science Citation Index, and EMBASE. WHO reports, national disease control program reports, and conference proceedings were also reviewed. The database search was conducted using keywords including rabies, control, and prevention. In forty countries (40/54), some level of rabies control and prevention strategy was available while in fourteen (14/54) countries, no specific national control and prevention strategy for human rabies could be retrieved. Thirty-four (34/54) countries utilized the Stepwise Approach towards Rabies Elimination (SARE) tool to monitor the national rabies control efforts-five of these countries were at the lowest tier (0/5) of the SARE scoring system while no country had achieved the highest score (5/5). High burden countries need to step up the implementation of context specific national rabies control, prevention, and monitoring strategies.     In this study, we aim to determine the elastographic characteristics of both primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism using shear wave elastography. We also aim to evaluate the elastographic differences between them, as well as the differences between the parathyroid, thyroid, and muscle tissue, in order to better identify a cutoff value for the parathyroid tissue.

    In this prospective study, we examined a total of 68 patients with hyperparathyroidism, divided into two groups; one group consisted of 27 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and the other group consisted of 41 selected patients with confirmed secondary hyperparathyroidism. The elasticity index (EI) was determined in the parathyroid, thyroid, and muscle tissue. The determined values were compared to better identify the parathyroid tissue.

    The median value of mean SWE values measured for parathyroid adenomas from primary hyperparathyroidism was 4.86 kPa. For secondary hyperparathyroidism, the median value of mean SWE was 6.96 KPa. First, the direct treatment of mycotoxins and coffee by-products extracts in SH-SY5Y cells was assayed. IC50 values for α-ZEL were 20.8 and 14.0 µM for 48 h and 72 h, respectively and, for BEA only at 72 h, it was 2.5 µM. Afterwards, the pre-treatment with spent coffee obtained by boiling water increased cell viability for α-ZEL at 24 h and 48 h from 10% to 16% and from 25% to 30%, respectively; while with silverskin coffee, a decrease was observed. Opposite effects were observed for BEA where an increase for silverskin coffee was observed at 24 h and 48 h, from 14% to 23% and from 25% to 44%, respectively; however, a decrease below 50% was observed for spent coffee. Finally, the simultaneous treatment strategy for the highest concentration assayed in SH-SY5Y cells provided higher cytoprotection for α-ZEL (from 44% to 56% for 24 h and 48 h, respectively) than BEA (30% for 24 h and 48 h). In recent years, progress has been made in both action and collaboration including implementation of surveillance and prevention measures. In this review we assess the scale of surveillance, preventive, and control efforts of canine-transmitted human rabies in African countries. We reviewed literature published from 2014 to 2018, retrieved from electronic databases including MEDLINE, Global Index Medicus, BIOSIS, Science Citation Index, and EMBASE. WHO reports, national disease control program reports, and conference proceedings were also reviewed. The database search was conducted using keywords including rabies, control, and prevention. In forty countries (40/54), some level of rabies control and prevention strategy was available while in fourteen (14/54) countries, no specific national control and prevention strategy for human rabies could be retrieved. Thirty-four (34/54) countries utilized the Stepwise Approach towards Rabies Elimination (SARE) tool to monitor the national rabies control efforts-five of these countries were at the lowest tier (0/5) of the SARE scoring system while no country had achieved the highest score (5/5). High burden countries need to step up the implementation of context specific national rabies control, prevention, and monitoring strategies. COVID-19 has infected over 90 million people worldwide, therefore it is considered a pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and/or organ failure. Individuals receiving a heart transplantation (HT) may be at higher risk of adverse outcomes attributable to COVID-19 due to immunosuppressives, as well as concomitant infections that may also influence the prognoses. Herein, we describe the first report of two cases of HT recipients with concomitant infections by SARS-CoV-2, Trypanosoma cruzi, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) dissemination, from the first day of hospitalization due to COVID-19 in the intensive care unit (ICU) until the death of the patients. In this study, we aim to determine the elastographic characteristics of both primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism using shear wave elastography. We also aim to evaluate the elastographic differences between them, as well as the differences between the parathyroid, thyroid, and muscle tissue, in order to better identify a cutoff value for the parathyroid tissue. In this prospective study, we examined a total of 68 patients with hyperparathyroidism, divided into two groups; one group consisted of 27 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and the other group consisted of 41 selected patients with confirmed secondary hyperparathyroidism. The elasticity index (EI) was determined in the parathyroid, thyroid, and muscle tissue. The determined values were compared to better identify the parathyroid tissue. The median value of mean SWE values measured for parathyroid adenomas from primary hyperparathyroidism was 4.86 kPa. For secondary hyperparathyroidism, the median value of mean SWE was 6.96 KPa. The mn both cases of primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism, as there are significant differences between the parathyroid, thyroid, and muscle tissue. We found a global cutoff value for the parathyroid tissue of 9.58 kPa, but we must keep in mind that there are significant elastographic differences between cutoffs for primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism.Coffee silverskin and spent coffee have been evaluated in a neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y cells) against beauvericin (BEA) and α-zearalenol (α-ZEL)-induced cytotoxicity with different strategies of treatment. First, the direct treatment of mycotoxins and coffee by-products extracts in SH-SY5Y cells was assayed. IC50 values for α-ZEL were 20.8 and 14.0 µM for 48 h and 72 h, respectively and, for BEA only at 72 h, it was 2.5 µM. Afterwards, the pre-treatment with spent coffee obtained by boiling water increased cell viability for α-ZEL at 24 h and 48 h from 10% to 16% and from 25% to 30%, respectively; while with silverskin coffee, a decrease was observed. Opposite effects were observed for BEA where an increase for silverskin coffee was observed at 24 h and 48 h, from 14% to 23% and from 25% to 44%, respectively; however, a decrease below 50% was observed for spent coffee. Finally, the simultaneous treatment strategy for the highest concentration assayed in SH-SY5Y cells provided higher cytoprotection for α-ZEL (from 44% to 56% for 24 h and 48 h, respectively) than BEA (30% for 24 h and 48 h).
