The pathological examination concluded with multiple and bilateral pheochromocytomas with a PASS score between 2 and 6. The patient was treated with hormone replacement therapy immediately after the surgery. The subsequent course with a 10-month follow-up was favorable with disappearance of functional signs, correct blood pressure, good general condition, normal growth and a normal biological balance.

    A prospective study was performed in a 27-bed tertiary adult intensive care unit of 20 mechanically ventilated patients in the weaning stage of their critical illness. The study assessed sleep by polysomnography (PSG) during the evening between 2100-700 hours, nursing interventions using the Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System (TISS), illness severity using SOFA and APACHE II scores and CBT 24-hour pattern.

    Patients were awake for approximately half the study period (45.04%, IQR 13.81-77-17) with no REM (0%, IQR 0-0.04%) and median arousals of 19.5/hour (IQR 7.1-40.9). The 24-hour CBT had a rhythmic pattern in 13 (65%) patients with a highly variable phase of median peak time at 1735 hours (IQR 1240-1939). No significant associations were found between CBT rhythmicity, sleep stages, sleep EEG frequency density, illness severity scores or TISS on the day of PSG. There was no relationship between time awake and CBT rhythmicity (P=0.48) or CBT peak time (P=0.82). The relationship between circadian rhythms and sleep patterns in the critically ill is complex.

  • Carotid artery lumen diameter (CALD) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) are essential factors for estimating the risk of many cardiovascular diseases. The automatic measurement of them in ultrasound (US) images is an efficient assisting diagnostic procedure. Despite the advances, existing methods still suffer the issue of low measuring accuracy and poor prediction stability, mainly due to the following disadvantages (1) ignore anatomical prior and prone to give anatomically inaccurate estimation; (2) require carefully designed post-processing, which may introduce more estimation errors; (3) rely on massive pixel-wise annotations during training; (4) can not estimate the uncertainty of the predictions. In this study, we propose the Anatomical Prior-guided ReInforcement Learning model (APRIL), which innovatively formulate the measurement of CALD & CIMT as an RL problem and dynamically incorporate anatomical prior (AP) into the system through a novel reward. With the guidance of AP, the designed keypoints in APRIL can avoid various anatomy impossible mis-locations, and accurately measure the CALD & CIMT based on their corresponding locations. Moreover, this formulation significantly reduces human annotation effort by only using several keypoints and can help to eliminate the extra post-processing steps. Further, we introduce an uncertainty module for measuring the prediction variance, which can guide us to adaptively rectify the estimation of those frames with considerable uncertainty. Experiments on a challenging carotid US dataset show that APRIL can achieve MAE (in pixel/mm) of 3.02±2.23 / 0.18±0.13 for CALD, and 0.96±0.70 / 0.06±0.04 for CIMT, which significantly surpass popular approaches that use more annotations.The effectiveness of immunotherapy highly correlates with the degree and the type of infiltrated immune cells in the tumor tissue. Treatments based on modifying the immune cell infiltrate of the tumor microenvironment are thus gaining momentum.     Implications of lubricant use in men having sex with men (MSM) are poorly characterized, particularly associations with sexual behavior and rectal sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk.

Here, we have presented global viewpoint on implications of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants based on structural-function impact of crucial mutations occurring in its spike (S), ORF8 and nucleocapsid (N) proteins. While the N501Y mutation was observed in all three lineages, the 501Y.V1 and P.1 accumulated a different set of mutations in the S protein. The missense mutational effects were predicted through a COVID-19 dedicated resource followed by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The mechanical features were determined, such as breaking force, recovered and unrecovered elongations in cyclic tensile test, stiffness rigidity. The analysis of the obtained results confirmed, that both the model and the order in which the weft threads were introduced into individual layers influence the mechanical strength and bending rigidity of multilayer woven. It was found, that the strength properties characterized by the above mentioned indicators are influenced by the number of threads weaved as both the stuffer and binding warp.A "green" solvent-free industrial process (patent pending) is here described for a grape seed extract (GSE) preparation (Ecovitis™) obtained from selected seeds of Veneto region wineries, in the northeast of Italy, by water and selective tangential flow filtration at different porosity. Since a comprehensive, non-ambiguous characterization of GSE is still a difficult task, we resorted to using an integrated combination of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS). By calibration of retention time and spectroscopic quantification of catechin as chromophore, we succeeded in quantifying GPC polymers up to traces at n = 30. The MS analysis carried out by the ESI-HRMS method by direct-infusion allows the detection of more than 70 species, at different polymerization and galloylation, up to n = 13. This sensitivity took advantage of the nanoscale shotgun approach, although paying the limit of missed separation of stereoisomers. GPC and MS approaches were remarkably well cross-validated by overlapping results.

They proved its effectivity in noise reduction, single-image super-resolution, and segmentation. In this study, we apply stacked U-Net, a deep learning method, for X-ray computed tomography image reconstruction to generate high-quality images in a short time with a small number of projections. It is not easy to create highly accurate models because medical images have few training images due to patients' privacy issues. Thus, we utilize various images from the ImageNet, a widely known visual database. Results show that a cross-sectional image with a peak signal-to-noise ratio of 27.93 db and a structural similarity of 0.886 is recovered for a 512 × 512 image using 360-degree rotation, 512 detectors, and 64 projections, with a processing time of 0.11 s on the GPU. Therefore, the proposed method has a shorter reconstruction time and better image quality than the existing methods.A native veil-forming yeast and a commercial yeast strain were used to elaborate sparkling wines by the Champenoise method with a grape variety traditionally used for the production of still wines. Wines aged on lees for fifteen months were sampled at five points and their physicochemical and sensory indices were analysed. When utilizing ammonium, nitrate or nitrite as the sole nitrogen source in aerobic conditions, the isolated strain showed the maximum nitrogen removal rate of 2.24 ± 0.14 mg/(L·h), 3.63 ± 0.21 mg/(L·h) and 2.30 ± 0.23 mg/(L·h), respectively. Functional genes and key enzymes involved in heterotrophic-aerobic nitrogen transformations were characterized, establishing the pathway of HN-AD.     strains have been implicated in serious community-associated invasive infections and their increasing multidrug resistance is a major global health concern. Thus, we investigated the prevalence of the PVL gene and the antimicrobial resistance profile of nasal
    isolates from healthy adults in Tundu-Wada, Gombe State of Nigeria.

    A total of 262 nasal samples from healthy adults were obtained and cultured. The isolates were identified as
    by standard morphological and biochemical methods alongside with the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification of their
    gene. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by the disc diffusion technique and the presence of
    and PVL genes was determined by PCR analysis.

    The overall nasal colonization of
    was 17.6%. The prevalence of haemolysin and biofilm production among the isolates was 25(54.3%) and 42(91.3%), respectively. Only 2(4.3%) and 5(10.9%) possessed
    and PVL genes respectively but none of the isolates harboured these two genes. All the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin but were highly susceptible (93.7%) to gentamicin. The prevalence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) among the isolates was M 45.7% and all PVL-producing isolates were MDR while one of the isolates with
    gene exhibited extensive-drug resistance (XDR).

    This is the first report of nasal colonization of MDR PVL-producing

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by the disc diffusion technique and the presence of and PVL genes was determined by PCR analysis. The overall nasal colonization of was 17.6%. The prevalence of haemolysin and biofilm production among the isolates was 25(54.3%) and 42(91.3%), respectively. Only 2(4.3%) and 5(10.9%) possessed and PVL genes respectively but none of the isolates harboured these two genes. All the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin but were highly susceptible (93.7%) to gentamicin. The prevalence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) among the isolates was M 45.7% and all PVL-producing isolates were MDR while one of the isolates with gene exhibited extensive-drug resistance (XDR). However, recent technological advancements, along with parallel surge in clinical research have led to the concomitant establishment of other powerful computational techniques such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These leading-edge tools with the ability to successfully predict side-effects of a wide range of drugs have eventually taken over the field of drug design. ML, a subset of AI, is a robust computational tool that is capable of data analysis and analytical model building with minimal human intervention. It is based on powerful algorithms that use huge sets of 'training data' as inputs to predict new output values, which improve iteratively through experience. In this review, along with a brief discussion on the evolution of the drug discovery process, we have focused on the methodologies pertaining to the technological advancements of machine learning. This review, with specific examples, also emphasises the tremendous contributions of ML in the field of biomedicine, while exploring possibilities for future developments.The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term feeding of graded levels of deoxynivalenol (DON) on performance, nutrient utilization, and organ health of grower-finisher pigs. A total of 240 mixed-sex grower-finisher pigs (35.9 ± 1.1 kg initial body weight, BW) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (6 pigs/pen; 10 pens/treatment) for 77 d. We hypothesize that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within or near mRNA-microRNA (miRNA) binding sites may affect miRNA/target gene interaction, resulting in differential mRNA/protein expression and promoting the development and progression of CRC.

    We conducted a case-control study of 507 patients with CRC recruited from a tertiary hospital and 497 population-based controls to assess the association of genetic polymorphisms in miR-143/145 and the KRAS 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) with susceptibility to CRC and patients' survival. In addition, genetic variations of genomic regions located from 500 bp upstream to 500 bp downstream of the miR-143/miR-145 gene and the 3'UTR of KRAS were selected for analysis using the Haploview and HaploReg software.

    Using publicly available expression profiling data, we found that miR-143/145 and KRAS expression were all reduced in rectal cancer tissue compared with adjacent non-neoplastic large intestinal mucosa.

This mini-review highlights the recent advances of various types of nanoparticles in biomedicine and will be of great value to researchers in the field of materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine.To keep up with the pace of rapid discoveries in biomedicine, a plethora of research endeavors had been directed toward Rational Drug Development that slowly gave way to Structure-Based Drug Design (SBDD). In the past few decades, SBDD played a stupendous role in identification of novel drug-like molecules that are capable of altering the structures and/or functions of the target macromolecules involved in different disease pathways and networks. Unfortunately, post-delivery drug failures due to adverse drug interactions have constrained the use of SBDD in biomedical applications. However, recent technological advancements, along with parallel surge in clinical research have led to the concomitant establishment of other powerful computational techniques such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These leading-edge tools with the ability to successfully predict side-effects of a wide range of drugs have eventually taken over the field of drug design. ML, a subset of AI, is a robust computational tool that is capable of data analysis and analytical model building with minimal human intervention. It is based on powerful algorithms that use huge sets of 'training data' as inputs to predict new output values, which improve iteratively through experience. In this review, along with a brief discussion on the evolution of the drug discovery process, we have focused on the methodologies pertaining to the technological advancements of machine learning. This review, with specific examples, also emphasises the tremendous contributions of ML in the field of biomedicine, while exploring possibilities for future developments.The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term feeding of graded levels of deoxynivalenol (DON) on performance, nutrient utilization, and organ health of grower-finisher pigs. A total of 240 mixed-sex grower-finisher pigs (35.9 ± 1.1 kg initial body weight, BW) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (6 pigs/pen; 10 pens/treatment) for 77 d. Diets consisted of a control diet without DON (CONT) and diets containing 1, 3, or 5 ppm DON (DON1, DON3, or DON5). Nitrogen-balance was determined in 1 pig/pen during weeks 6 and 12 of the study. Growth performance measures were taken weekly for average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and gainfeed (GF) until day 77. We hypothesize that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within or near mRNA-microRNA (miRNA) binding sites may affect miRNA/target gene interaction, resulting in differential mRNA/protein expression and promoting the development and progression of CRC. We conducted a case-control study of 507 patients with CRC recruited from a tertiary hospital and 497 population-based controls to assess the association of genetic polymorphisms in miR-143/145 and the KRAS 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) with susceptibility to CRC and patients' survival. In addition, genetic variations of genomic regions located from 500 bp upstream to 500 bp downstream of the miR-143/miR-145 gene and the 3'UTR of KRAS were selected for analysis using the Haploview and HaploReg software. Using publicly available expression profiling data, we found that miR-143/145 and KRAS expression were all reduced in rectal cancer tissue compared with adjacent non-neoplastic large intestinal mucosa.

There is a growing concern about the male reproductive dysfunction caused by environmental pollutants exposure, however the underlying molecular mechanisms are still not well understood. Epigenetic modifications play a key role in the biological responses to external stressors. Therefore, this review discusses the roles of epigenetic modifications in male reproductive toxicity induced by environmental pollutants, with a particular emphasis on DNA methylation, histone modifications and miRNAs. The available literature proposed that environmental pollutants can directly or cause oxidative stress and DNA damage to induce a variety of epigenetic changes, which lead to gene dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction and consequent male reproductive toxicity. However, future studies focusing on more kinds of epigenetic modifications and their crosstalk as well as epidemiological data are still required to fill in the current research gaps. In addition, the intrinsic links between pollutants-mediated epigenetic regulations and male reproduction-related physiological responses deserve to be further explored.Dibutyltin (DBT) is an organotine widely applied in stabilizing plastics and de-worm poultry agents. But the effects of DBT on immature Leydig cells remain elusive. Thus, the present study aims to investigate whether in vitro exposure to DBT affects immature Leydig cell function of androgen production and delineate the underlying mechanisms. 35 days old rat immature Leydig cells were isolated and exposed to DBT at different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 μM). It was found that 0.5 and 1 μM DBT lowered androgen production from immature Leydig cells under basal conditions. DBT at 1 μM lowered androgen production from immature Leydig cells under the stimulations from luteinizing hormone or 8-Br-cAMP. DBT at 1 μM lowered 22R-hydroxycholesterol and pregnenolone-mediated androgen production from immature Leydig cells. DBT at 0.1, 0.5, and 1 μM down-regulated the mRNA expression levels of Lhcgr, Star, Cyp11a1, Hsd3b1, and Nr5a1. Further investigation found that DBT at 1 μM directly inhibited CYP11A1 and 3β-HSD1 enzyme activities. In conclusion, this study told us that in vitro exposure to DBT inhibited androgen biosynthesis in immature Leydig cells by selectively interfering with the expressions and enzyme activities of CYP11A1 and 3β-HSD1.Lead (Pb) exposure causes cognitive deficits in children. Pregnant rats were administered drinking water containing 0, 2000, or 4000 ppm PbAc from gestational day 6 until day 21 post-delivery (weaning), and offspring were maintained without PbAc exposure until adulthood on postnatal day (PND) 77. There was a dose-related accumulation of Pb in the offspring brain at weaning, while Pb was mainly excreted in adulthood. In the hippocampus, metallothionein I/II immunoreactive (+) glia were increased through adulthood as a neuroprotective response to accumulated Pb, accompanied by increased astrocyte and microglia numbers in adulthood, suggesting sustained neural damage. Gene expression changes suggested elevated oxidative stress at weaning and suppression of the antioxidant system in adulthood, as well as continued neuroinflammatory responses. At weaning, granule cell apoptosis was increaase in γ-H2AX+ SGZ cells, suggesting induction of cellular senescence of SGZ cells due to Pb genotoxicity.Gabapentinoids are recommended first-line treatments for neuropathic pain.
