  • Biomarker selection has played an increasingly important part in modern medicine with advances of omics techniques. Kohonen self-organizing map is a well-established variable reduction algorithm in identifying significant biomarkers based on variable clustering. However, high dimensionality but small sample size of omics data makes self-organizing map-based model problematic in terms of selection stability and reproducibility. This natural approach consists of a cork pellet recycled from wine stoppers used as biosorbent material to replace the traditional BAμE device. The analytical determinations were performed using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Parameters such as type of desorption solvent, desorption and extraction time, sample pH and ionic strength were carefully optimized through univariate and multivariate approaches. Cork pellets of 15 mm length were inserted into vials containing 15 mL of water sample adjusted at pH 3 and 25% (w/v) of NaCl. The extraction step was carried out under agitation for 45 min followed by liquid desorption with 120 μL of methanolacetonitrile (11 v/v) for 30 min. Satisfactory analytical performance was obtained with coefficients of determination ranging from 0.9921 for methylparaben to 0.9994 for propylparaben; intraday precision ranged from 6.7 to 18.3%, and interday precision varied from 7.2 to 20.0%. Accuracy was assessed through relative recovery assays and varied from 53 to 124%.In this work, the correlations between retention behavior and lipophilicity of a large set of hydrophilic neutral and ionic analytes were studied based on three hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) stationary phases, including zwitterionic, crosslinked diol and triazole stationary phases. It was found that HILIC, due to the diversity of retention mechanism, is a more complex chromatography separation mode than reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) which has been widely accepted for lipophilicity assessment. Because electrostatic interactions contributed to the overall retention of the charged solutes on all three stationary phases, ion-strength of the mobile phase kept the same during the whole experiment. After the correlations between retention factor log k and water volume fraction Φ were investigated, the mixed retention model was revealed to be more suitable for HILIC retention behavior than other single models including partitioning and adsorption model. Moreover, in order to bridge the relationship between HILIC log k and lipophilicity parameter log D, net charge ne and Abraham solvation parameter were introduced in the quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) model. Although the correlation coefficients between log D and log k were still moderate, the significant improvement in correlation has made HILIC a potential choice as the complement of RPLC for log D measurement.Porous microstructure materials are considered good candidates for the development of highly sensitive and fast humidity sensors. In this regard, we prepared polyaniline (PANI) decorated Cu-ZnS porous microsphere structures (PMSs) for the fabrication of humidity sensors. PANI coated Cu-ZnS PMSs were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and in situ polymerization process. The synthesized PMSs were characterized by different techniques to study the structural, morphological and surface absorption properties. Several compositions for the PANI/Cu-ZnS PMS were investigated, which were then compared with pure PANI. The experimental observations demonstrate that a PANI/1%Cu-ZnS PMS has better sensitivity, fast response and good stability compared to pure PANI and other PANI/CuZnS compositions. Finally, a PANI/1% Cu-ZnS PMS was found to be optimized for humidity sensors due to its well distributed roughness, porosity and hydrophilicity. The average response and recovery times for PANI/1% Cu-ZnS were found to be 42 s and 24 s, respectively, which outperform recent results.Histamine (HA) plays an important role in food safety supervision and is also involved in various physiological functions. In this study, we fabricated an electrochemical sensor to detect HA via the pyrolysis of the hydrothermal Ni-MOF (metal-organic frameworks), in which the obtained Ni@C material was deployed as the sensing agent. Ni@C was comprehensively characterized in terms of its morphology, constitution, as well as its electrochemical behavior. The as-prepared sensor (Ni@C/GCE) features excellent electrocatalytic activities. It was also observed that the electrochemical property of the sensor was substantially improved because Ni@C afforded an enlarged active surface and accelerated electron transport. This sensor affords amperometric analysis in the linear range of 10-3-100 μM HA with a 3.2 × 10-4 μM low detection limit (S/N = 3). Many important features, including decent anti-interference, reproducibility, stability, and reliability, were also observed.

  • The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family members, VEGF-A, placenta growth factor (PlGF), and to a lesser extent VEGF-B, play an essential role in tumor-associated angiogenesis, tissue infiltration, and metastasis formation. Although VEGF-A can activate both VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 membrane receptors, PlGF and VEGF-B exclusively interact with VEGFR-1. Differently from VEGFR-2, which is involved both in physiological and pathological angiogenesis, in the adult VEGFR-1 is required only for pathological angiogenesis. Besides this role in tumor endothelium, ligand-mediated stimulation of VEGFR-1 expressed in tumor cells may directly induce cell chemotaxis and extracellular matrix invasion. Furthermore, VEGFR-1 activation in myeloid progenitors and tumor-associated macrophages favors cancer immune escape through the release of immunosuppressive cytokines. These properties have prompted a number of preclinical and clinical studies to analyze VEGFR-1 involvement in the metastatic process. The aim of the present review is to highlight the contribution of VEGFs/VEGFR-1 signaling in the progression of different tumor types and to provide an overview of the therapeutic approaches targeting VEGFR-1 currently under investigation.Microsoft Kinect, a low-cost motion capture device, has huge potential in applications that require machine vision, such as human-robot interactions, home-based rehabilitation and clinical assessments. The Kinect sensor can track 25 key three-dimensional (3D) "skeleton" joints on the human body at 30 frames per second, and the skeleton data often have acceptable accuracy. However, the skeleton data obtained from the sensor sometimes exhibit a high level of jitter due to noise and estimation error. This jitter is worse when there is occlusion or a subject moves slightly out of the field of view of the sensor for a short period of time. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel approach to simultaneously handle the noise and error in the skeleton data derived from Kinect. Initially, we adopted classification processing to divide the skeleton data into noise data and erroneous data. Furthermore, we used a Kalman filter to smooth the noise data and correct erroneous data. We performed an occlusion experiment to prove the effectiveness of our algorithm. The proposed method outperforms existing techniques, such as the moving mean filter and traditional Kalman filter. The aim of the study was to investigate how this improved measure of physical activity affected the relationship with markers of cardiometabolic health. Accelerometer data and markers of cardiometabolic health from 725 adults from two samples, LIV 2013 and SCAPIS pilot, were analyzed. The accelerometer data was processed using both the original ActiGraph method with a low-pass cut-off at 1.6 Hz and the improved method with a low-pass cut-off at 10 Hz. The relationship between the physical activity intensity spectrum and a cardiometabolic health composite score was investigated using partial least squares regression. The strongest association between physical activity and cardiometabolic health was shifted towards higher intensities with the 10 Hz output compared to the ActiGraph method. In addition, the total explained variance was higher with the improved method. The 10 Hz output enables correctly measuring and interpreting high intensity physical activity and shows that physical activity at this intensity is stronger related to cardiometabolic health compared to the most commonly used ActiGraph method.A high-precision acceleration measurement system based on an ultra-sensitive tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR) sensor is presented in this paper. A "force-magnetic-electric" coupling structure that converts an input acceleration into a change in magnetic field around the TMR sensor is designed. In such a structure, a micro-cantilever is integrated with a magnetic field source on its tip. Under an acceleration, the mechanical displacement of the cantilever causes a change in the spatial magnetic field sensed by the TMR sensor. The TMR sensor is constructed with a Wheatstone bridge structure to achieve an enhanced sensitivity. Meanwhile, a low-noise differential circuit is developed for the proposed system to further improve the precision of the measured acceleration. The experimental results show that the micro-system achieves a measurement resolution of 19 μg/√Hz at 1 Hz, a scale factor of 191 mV/g within a range of ± 2 g, and a bias instability of 38 μg (Allan variance). The noise sources of the proposed system are thoroughly investigated, which shows that low-frequency 1/f noise is the dominant noise source. We propose to use a high-frequency modulation technique to suppress the 1/f noise effectively. Measurement results show that the 1/f noise is suppressed about 8.6-fold at 1 Hz and the proposed system resolution can be improved to 2.2 μg/√Hz theoretically with this high-frequency modulation technique.In the absence of a vaccine, current antibiotic-dependent efforts to reduce the prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in high prevalence populations have been shown to result in extremely high levels of antibiotic consumption. No randomized controlled trials have been conducted to validate this strategy and an important concern of this approach is that it may induce antimicrobial resistance. To contribute to this debate, we assessed if mass treatment in the related species, Neisseria meningitidis, was associated with the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. To this end, we conducted a historical review of the effect of mass meningococcal treatment programmes on the prevalence of N. meningitidis and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. We found evidence that mass treatment programmes were associated with the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

  • The burden of depression and HIV is high among people who inject drugs (PWID), yet the effect of depression on transmission risk behaviors is not well understood in this population. Using causal inference methods, we analyzed data from 455 PWID living with HIV in Vietnam 2009-2013. Study visits every 6 months over 2 years measured depressive symptoms in the past week and injecting and sexual behaviors in the prior 3 months. Severe depressive symptoms (vs. mild/no symptoms) increased injection equipment sharing (risk difference [RD] = 3.9 percentage points, 95% CI -1.7, 9.6) but not condomless sex (RD = -1.8, 95% CI -6.4, 2.8) as reported 6 months later. The cross-sectional association with injection equipment sharing at the same visit (RD = 6.2, 95% CI 1.4, 11.0) was stronger than the longitudinal effect. Interventions on depression among PWID may decrease sharing of injection equipment and the corresponding risk of HIV transmission.Clinical trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01689545.Fostering adherence and open communication about adherence challenges is key to harnessing the potential of biomedical HIV prevention products. We describe the counseling intervention and objective adherence measure feedback process implemented to support adherence to the dapivirine vaginal ring among participants in four sub-Saharan countries and present findings on the counselors' likeability and acceptability of the intervention. Most counselors (N = 42; 86%) liked Options counseling "very ****" and during in-depth interviews (N = 22), reported that the intervention reshaped their adherence counselling approach by emphasizing understanding participants' experiences using the ring, which facilitated open discussion of adherence challenges. Counselors found that reframing residual drug level (RDL) discussions from the "adherence" to "protection" perspective encouraged adherence among consistent users and facilitated decisions to switch to a different HIV prevention approach among infrequent users.     The burden of depression and HIV is high among people who inject drugs (PWID), yet the effect of depression on transmission risk behaviors is not well understood in this population. Using causal inference methods, we analyzed data from 455 PWID living with HIV in Vietnam 2009-2013. Study visits every 6 months over 2 years measured depressive symptoms in the past week and injecting and sexual behaviors in the prior 3 months. Severe depressive symptoms (vs. mild/no symptoms) increased injection equipment sharing (risk difference [RD] = 3.9 percentage points, 95% CI -1.7, 9.6) but not condomless sex (RD = -1.8, 95% CI -6.4, 2.8) as reported 6 months later. The cross-sectional association with injection equipment sharing at the same visit (RD = 6.2, 95% CI 1.4, 11.0) was stronger than the longitudinal effect. Most counselors (N = 42; 86%) liked Options counseling "very much" and during in-depth interviews (N = 22), reported that the intervention reshaped their adherence counselling approach by emphasizing understanding participants' experiences using the ring, which facilitated open discussion of adherence challenges. Endoprosthetic stent placement is an immediate and cost-effective therapy for dysphagia caused by malignant esophageal strictures from esophageal cancer. However, later stage complications, such as stent migration, could weaken the swallow efficacy in the esophagus. The stent radial force (RF) on the esophageal wall is pivotal in avoiding stent migration. Due to limited randomized controlled trials in patients, the stent design and stenting guidelines are still unconstructive. To address the knowledge deficit, we have investigated the capabilities of the RoSE by implanting two stents (stent A and B) of different radial stiffness characteristics, to measure the stent RF and its effect on the stent migration. Also, endoscopic manometry on the RoSE under peristalsis has been performed toreased the IBPS, especially for the higher concentration boluses. It was found that if a stiffer stent buckles, it can reduce the swallow efficacy and cause recurrent dysphagia.     Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are immune-mediated disorders characterized by a chronic inflammation, with intermittent exacerbations of symptoms and inflammation. In both diseases, medical treatment has made revolutionary steps forward. Nevertheless, surgery is still required in many cases due to inefficacy of multiple medical therapies. It is not clear whether surgery rates in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are currently decreasing despite all improvements.

    Multidisciplinary management is critical in surgical patients to improve long-term outcomes. Endoscopy plays a crucial role, both before and after surgery, in planning therapeutic strategies and stratifying risk of recurrence. Aim of this review is to provide a deeper insight into the central role of endoscopy in the postoperative management of IBD patients, focusing on recent research advances, future challenges and unresolved questions.

    Both UC and CD surgical patients need endoscopy to define the correct therapeutic choice, predict subsequent disease course and adopt the correct surveillance strategy. In the next future, newer endoscopic techniques could be systematically applied in IBD patients after surgery, to assess early postoperative inflammation, response to treatment, or, regarding UC, to provide enhanced pouch surveillance, allowing for early detection of inflammation and dysplasia.

Nonetheless, radiologists are interpreting lung imaging in unsuspected patients as well as in suspected patients with imaging obtained to rule out other relevant clinical indications. The knowledge of pathological findings is also crucial for imagers to better interpret various imaging findings. Identification of the imaging findings that are commonly seen with the disease is important to diagnose and suggest confirmatory testing in unsuspected cases. Proper precautionary measures will be important in such unsuspected patients to prevent further spread. In addition to understanding the imaging findings for the diagnosis of the disease, it is important to understand the growing set of tools provided by artificial intelligence.

    Although nurses' workplace social capital for a healthy work environment has received considerable attention, few scales about nurses' workplace social capital are based on the attributes of clinical settings in Japan. This study aims to develop a Relational Workplace Social Capital Scale for Japanese Nurses (RWSCS-JN), which includes bonding, linking, and bridging social capital and assessing its reliability and validity.

    We assessed its reliability and validity using questionnaire survey data collected from 309 nurses in the first survey and 105 nurses in the second survey in four hospitals in Japan. First, we determined the number of factors and items for the RWSCS-JN through the parallel and factor analyses after conducting the item analysis. Then, we confirmed the omega coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) of the RWSCS-JN. Finally, we examined the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient between the RWSCS-JN score and other variables, including an existing measurement of workplace social capital, work engagement, and turnover intention.

    The newly developed RWSCS-JN contained 15 items, comprising three factors as follows bonding social capital, linking social capital, and bridging social capital. The omega coefficient and the ICC of the RWSCS-JN were 0.90 and 0.85, respectively. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient between the RWSCS-JN and the existing scale of the workplace social capital was 0.88 (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient between the RWSCS-JN and work engagement was 0.36 (p < 0.01) and that of the RWSCS-JN and turnover intention was - 0.40 (p < 0.01).

    Tor putitora, the largest freshwater fish of the Indian subcontinent, is an endangered species. Several factors have been attributed towards its continuous population decrease, but very little is known about the gut microbiome of this fish. Also, the fish gut microbiome serves as a reservoir of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance determinants. Therefore, the shotgun metagenomic approach was employed to investigate the taxonomic composition and functional potential of microbial communities present in the gut of Tor putitora, as well as the detection of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes in the microbiome.

    The analysis of bacterial diversity showed that Proteobacteria was predominant phylum, followed by Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria. Within Proteobacteria, Aeromonas and Caulobacter were chiefly present; also, Klebsiella, Escherichia, and plant symbionts were noticeably detected. Functional characterization of gut microbes endowed the virulence determinants, while surveillancend opportunistic pathogens, implying that factors adversely affecting the non-pathogenic population would allow colonization and proliferation of pathogens causing diseased state in asymptomatic Tor putitora. First, we determined the number of factors and items for the RWSCS-JN through the parallel and factor analyses after conducting the item analysis. Then, we confirmed the omega coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) of the RWSCS-JN. Finally, we examined the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient between the RWSCS-JN score and other variables, including an existing measurement of workplace social capital, work engagement, and turnover intention. The newly developed RWSCS-JN contained 15 items, comprising three factors as follows bonding social capital, linking social capital, and bridging social capital. The omega coefficient and the ICC of the RWSCS-JN were 0.90 and 0.85, respectively. Several factors have been attributed towards its continuous population decrease, but very little is known about the gut microbiome of this fish. Also, the fish gut microbiome serves as a reservoir of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance determinants. Therefore, the shotgun metagenomic approach was employed to investigate the taxonomic composition and functional potential of microbial communities present in the gut of Tor putitora, as well as the detection of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes in the microbiome. The analysis of bacterial diversity showed that Proteobacteria was predominant phylum, followed by Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria.     PubMed database was screened searching for the relevant existing literature in English language published until February 29th 2020, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement.

    A total of 40 articles met the inclusion criteria for our systematic analysis. AQP4 resulted the most studied water channel, followed by AQP1. The changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), brain parenchyma and choroid plexus (CP) in different hydrocephalus type were analyzed. Moreover, important pharmacological interactions regarding AQP and molecules or conditions were discussed. A very interesting result is the general consensus on increase of AQP4 in hydrocephalic patients, unless in patients suffering from idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus, where AQP4 shows a tendency in reduction.

Nursing students experience stress in clinical practice which can have a negative impact on their learning. Guided by Lazarus and Folkman's theory of stress and coping, this study explored nursing students' perceptions of and experiences with coping with stress in clinical practice. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten undergraduate nursing students. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results The themes of Learning about self, Knowing self, Value of social support, and Relationships with clinical instructors reflect participants' descriptions of coping with stress. Students cognitive and behavioral strategies, including reflection, help them understand their stress and decide how to reduce its effects. Conclusions Supportive and respectful relationships are essential for a student to learn and cope effectively with stressful situations. Implications for improving the clinical instructor's role to enhance students' coping with stress in clinical practice are discussed.Introduction Globally, Evidence based nursing practice (EBNP) is becoming an expected norm for nursing practice. Methods Biotin was measured using an Elecsys assay in two cohorts (i) 797 0-h and 646 3-h samples from 850 US emergency department patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS); (ii) 2023 random samples from a US laboratory network, in which biotin distributions were extrapolated for higher values using pharmacokinetic modeling. Biotin >20.0 ng/mL (81.8 nmol/L) prevalence and biotin 99th percentile values were calculated. AMI misclassification risk due to biotin interference with the TnT Gen 5 assay was modeled using different assay cutoffs and test timepoints. Results ACS cohort 1/797 (0.13%) 0-h and 1/646 (0.15%) 3-h samples had biotin >20.0 ng/mL (81.8 nmol/L); 99th percentile biotin was 2.62 ng/mL (10.7 nmol/L; 0-h) and 2.38 ng/mL (9.74 nmol/L; 3-h). Using conservative assumptions, the likelihood of false-negative AMI prediction due to biotin interference was 0.026% (0-h result; 19 ng/L TnT Gen 5 assay cutoff). US laboratory cohort 15/2023 (0.74%) samples had biotin >20.0 ng/mL (81.8 nmol/L); 99th percentile biotin was 16.6 ng/mL (68.0 nmol/L). Misclassification risk due to biotin interference (19 ng/L TnT Gen 5 assay cutoff) was 0.025% (0-h), 0.0064% (1-h), 0.00048% (3-h), and less then 0.00001% (6-h). Conclusions Biotin interference has minimal impact on the TnT Gen 5 assay's clinical utility, and the likelihood of false-negative AMI prediction is extremely low.
    Palliative, symptomatic and end-of-life care of advanced and metastatic cancer patients is a great challenge for every health care system. With the initiation and establishment of the multidisciplinary palliative tumor board (MPTB), our aims were the timely referral of patients to palliative care, and the avoidance of multiple unnecessary emergency visits and over-diagnostics without further treatment consequences.

    The MPTB meetings were held biweekly. The core members of the team were palliative care consultant, medical oncologist, internal medicine physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, and oncology and palliative medicine nurses. From May 2019 till January 2020, we discussed the medical history of 97 cases of 93 cancer patients with advanced disease states; in one meeting the team usually discussed over 6-10 complex patient histories. In every case we determined the actual form of the necessary palliative care, e.g., outpatient clinic, home care, or institutional referral, and we decided on further possible and realistic oncology treatment regimes.

ART singleton pregnancies with VT syndrome have higher rates of preterm birth and low-birth-weight new-borns than ART pregnancies that were originally singleton pregnancies.Objectives Clinical practice is a major component of nursing education wherein significant learning takes place. Nursing students experience stress in clinical practice which can have a negative impact on their learning. Guided by Lazarus and Folkman's theory of stress and coping, this study explored nursing students' perceptions of and experiences with coping with stress in clinical practice. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten undergraduate nursing students. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results The themes of Learning about self, Knowing self, Value of social support, and Relationships with clinical instructors reflect participants' descriptions of coping with stress. Students cognitive and behavioral strategies, including reflection, help them understand their stress and decide how to reduce its effects. Conclusions Supportive and respectful relationships are essential for a student to learn and cope effectively with stressful situations. Implications for improving the clinical instructor's role to enhance students' coping with stress in clinical practice are discussed.Introduction Globally, Evidence based nursing practice (EBNP) is becoming an expected norm for nursing practice. Results In this paper, the authors create an understanding of EBNP, describe the state of nursing education in Africa, and propose the EBNP content to be taught as well as how to teach it. We aimed to determine the prevalence of elevated biotin and AMI misclassification risk from biotin interference with the TnT Gen 5 assay. Methods Biotin was measured using an Elecsys assay in two cohorts (i) 797 0-h and 646 3-h samples from 850 US emergency department patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS); (ii) 2023 random samples from a US laboratory network, in which biotin distributions were extrapolated for higher values using pharmacokinetic modeling. Biotin >20.0 ng/mL (81.8 nmol/L) prevalence and biotin 99th percentile values were calculated. AMI misclassification risk due to biotin interference with the TnT Gen 5 assay was modeled using different assay cutoffs and test timepoints. Results ACS cohort 1/797 (0.13%) 0-h and 1/646 (0.15%) 3-h samples had biotin >20.0 ng/mL (81.8 nmol/L); 99th percentile biotin was 2.62 ng/mL (10.7 nmol/L; 0-h) and 2.38 ng/mL (9.74 nmol/L; 3-h). Using conservative assumptions, the likelihood of false-negative AMI prediction due to biotin interference was 0.026% (0-h result; 19 ng/L TnT Gen 5 assay cutoff). US laboratory cohort 15/2023 (0.74%) samples had biotin >20.0 ng/mL (81.8 nmol/L); 99th percentile biotin was 16.6 ng/mL (68.0 nmol/L). Misclassification risk due to biotin interference (19 ng/L TnT Gen 5 assay cutoff) was 0.025% (0-h), 0.0064% (1-h), 0.00048% (3-h), and less then 0.00001% (6-h). Conclusions Biotin interference has minimal impact on the TnT Gen 5 assay's clinical utility, and the likelihood of false-negative AMI prediction is extremely low. Palliative, symptomatic and end-of-life care of advanced and metastatic cancer patients is a great challenge for every health care system. With the initiation and establishment of the multidisciplinary palliative tumor board (MPTB), our aims were the timely referral of patients to palliative care, and the avoidance of multiple unnecessary emergency visits and over-diagnostics without further treatment consequences. The MPTB meetings were held biweekly. The core members of the team were palliative care consultant, medical oncologist, internal medicine physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, and oncology and palliative medicine nurses. From May 2019 till January 2020, we discussed the medical history of 97 cases of 93 cancer patients with advanced disease states; in one meeting the team usually discussed over 6-10 complex patient histories. In every case we determined the actual form of the necessary palliative care, e.g., outpatient clinic, home care, or institutional referral, and we decided on further possible and realistic oncology treatment regimes.

Moreover, as compared with the graphite electrode, the BDD electrode had a higher oxidation efficiency and COD removal efficiency. Furthermore, GC-MS was used to analyze the final degradation products, in which ammonium chloride, formic acid, acetic acid, and malonic acid were detected. Finally, the energy consumption was estimated to be 6.24 kWh·m-3 with a final COD of 30.2 mg·L-1 at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 without the addition of extra substances. This study provides an alternative for the upgrading of petrochemical wastewater treatment plants.In recent years, carbon tetrachloride (CT) has been frequently detected in surface water and groundwater around the world; it is necessary to find an effective way to treat wastewater contaminated with it. In this study, Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were immobilized on reduced graphene oxide (NF@rGO), and used to dechlorinate CT in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the two-dimensional structure of rGO could disperse nanoparticles commendably. The results of batch experiments showed that the 4N4F@rGO (Fe/GO = 4 wt./wt., and Ni/Fe = 4 wt.%) could reach a higher reduction capacity (143.2 ****/gcatalyst) compared with Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles (91.7 ****/gcatalyst) and Fe0 nanoparticles (49.8 ****/gcatalyst) respectively. That benefited from the nickel metal as a co-catalyst, which could reduce the reaction activation energy of 6.59 kJ/mol, and rGO as an electrical conductivity supporting material could further reduce the reaction activation energy of 4.73 kJ/mol as presented in the conceptual model. More complete dechlorination products were generated with the use of 4N4F@rGO. Based on the above results, the reductive pathway of CT and the catalytic reaction mechanism have been discussed.The eco-friendly and non-toxic natural organic substance, insolubilized humic acid (IHA), was used to remove Mn(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption characteristics were studied through a series of static adsorption tests. The results show that conditions such as the dose, the pH of the solution and the initial concentration of Mn(II) all affect removal efficiency, and the optimal pH value was 5.5. The sorption process for Mn(II) on IHA conforms to the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model and intra-particle diffusion is not the only factor affecting the adsorption rate. Both Langmuir and Freundlich models can describe this adsorption behavior, and the experimental maximum adsorption capacity of IHA was 52.87 mg/g under optimal conditions. The thermodynamic analysis of adsorption shows that the adsorption process is a non-spontaneous endothermic physical reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the samples, it was found that as IHA successfully adsorbed Mn(II), the surface morphology of IHA changed after the adsorption reaction. The catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) process for MO was also carried out using ACF-nZVI after reacting with Cr(VI) in the same fixed bed. The results showed that the breakthrough time of ACF-nZVI was significantly longer than that of ACF. Higher pH values were unfavorable for the Cr(VI) removal. The breakthrough time increased with decreasing inlet Cr(VI) concentration or increasing bed height. The Yoon-Nelson and bed depth service time (BDST) models were found to show good agreement with the experimental data. The Cr(VI) removal capacity when using ACF-nZVI was two times higher than that when using ACF. Under the optimal empty bed contact time of 1.256 min, the fixed bed displayed high MO conversion (99.2%) and chemical oxygen demand removal ratio (55.7%) with low Fe leaching concentration ( less then 5 mg/L) after continuous running for 240 min. After three cycles, the conversion of MO remained largely unchanged.In the present work, native chitosan (Ch) along with its chemically and physico-chemically modified versions, namely sulphate cross-linked chitosan (SCC) and sulphate cross-linked chitosan-bentonite composite (SCC-B), were employed as potential adsorbents for the removal of an anionic dye, Alizarin Red S (ARS) from aqueous solutions. All three adsorbents were extensively characterized using techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis, and pH point of zero charge. Various parameters were optimized, including pH of dye solution, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial adsorbate concentration and temperature of adsorption. Four adsorption isotherm models were studied and it was found that the Freundlich model was best-fit for all three systems. Maximum adsorption capacities towards adsorption of ARS were found to be 42.48, 109.12 and 131.58 mg g-1 for Ch, SCC and SCC-B, respectively.

Lesions and also (iatrogenic) complications that required surgical procedures in the past can now often be treated endoscopically. Advances in endoscopic mucosal resection and submucosal dissection also enable the resection of large or laterally spreading polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. Full-thickness resection is also possible by means of specially designed clips. By the creation of a submucosal tunnel submucosal lesions can be completely excised and the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter can be endoscopically severed in achalasia patients. Endosonography-guided interventions have developed into the standard procedure for complicated pancreatitis and the use of cholangioscopy offers new therapeutic procedures for the bile and pancreatic ducts. In this continuing medical education article interventional endoscopic techniques are presented and critically evaluated.An error in interpreting the statistical analysis output led to reporting errors in some of the effect sizes for the three-way repeated-measures ANOVAs in Experiment 1.
    Research on HPV vaccine coverage in the United States has typically aggregated Hispanic/Latinx individuals into a single group for analyses, an approach that has potentially masked variation between Hispanic/Latinx subgroups. To address this limitation, we examined HPV vaccine coverage across Hispanic/Latinx subgroups.

    We analyzed data on Hispanic/Latinx adolescents ages 13-17 (n = 16,335) from the 2012-2016 National Immunization Survey-Teen. Each adolescent was categorized into a subgroup Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American, South American, other Spanish origin, or multi-subgroup. We examined HPV vaccine initiation (receipt of one or more doses) and completion (receipt of three doses) for males and females separately. Analyses used weighted logistic regression.

    Vaccine coverage among males was highest among Central Americans (initiation 57.5%; completion 31.1%) and lowest among multi-subgroup males (initiation 46.3%; completion 19.9%). Among females, initiation ranged from 63.4% among Cubans efforts and vaccination interventions.
    An intraspinal fluid collection (ISFC) can be observed on spinal MRI in cases of intracranial hypotension syndrome (IHS). The goal of this study was to analyze the possible persistence of ISFC after therapy and its correlation to clinical disease activity and secondary complications.

    Twenty patients in our database of 57 patients, who were treated for IHS between 2009 and 2015, fulfilled the inclusion criteria of (a) diagnosed and treated IHS as well as (b) an ISFC in MRI imaging.     The aim of this study is to assess for the first time, the role of regional deep hyperthermia in combination with radiotherapy and systemic therapy in patients with poor prognosis of brain metastases (GPI ≤ 2.5).

    Patients with confirmed cerebral metastases and classified as GPI score ≤ 2.5 were included in this prospective study. Pretreatment stratification was defined as patients with 0-1 GPI score (Group A) and patients with 1.5-2.5 GPI score (Group B). HT was applied twice a week, 60min per session, during RT by regional capacitive device (HY-DEEP 600WM system) at 13.56MHz radiofrequency.

    Between June 2015 and June 2017, 15 patients and a total of 49 brain metastases were included in the protocol. All patients received all HT sessions as planned. RT and systemic therapy were also completed as prescribed. Tolerance to treatment was excellent and no toxicity was registered. Patients with HT effective treatment time longer than the median (W90time > 88%) showed better actuarial PFS at 6 and 12months (100% and 66.7%, respectively) compared to those with less HT effective treatment time (50% and 0%, respectively) (p < 0.031). Median OS was 6months (range 1-36months). Stratification by GPI score showed a median OS of 3months (CI 95% 2.49-3.51) in Group A and 8.0months (CI 95% 5.15-10.41) in Group B (p = 0.035).

    Undifferentiated carcinoma of the colon is rare, and its prognosis is very poor. We report a case of undifferentiated carcinoma of the colon with rhabdoid features developed during treatment of non-small lung carcinoma (NSCLC) with pembrolizumab.

    A 58-year-old man was diagnosed with transverse colon cancer during chemotherapy with pembrolizumab for NSCLC. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy was performed. The histopathological diagnosis was undifferentiated carcinoma with rhabdoid features and lymph node metastasis. Immunohistochemically, programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) showed positivity. The microsatellite instability (MSI) status was low. He continued to receive pembrolizumab for NSCLC, and there have been no signs of colon cancer recurrence and progression of NSCLC for 15 months.

The aim of this study is to assess for the first time, the role of regional deep hyperthermia in combination with radiotherapy and systemic therapy in patients with poor prognosis of brain metastases (GPI ≤ 2.5). Patients with confirmed cerebral metastases and classified as GPI score ≤ 2.5 were included in this prospective study. Pretreatment stratification was defined as patients with 0-1 GPI score (Group A) and patients with 1.5-2.5 GPI score (Group B). HT was applied twice a week, 60min per session, during RT by regional capacitive device (HY-DEEP 600WM system) at 13.56MHz radiofrequency. Between June 2015 and June 2017, 15 patients and a total of 49 brain metastases were included in the protocol. All patients received all HT sessions as planned. RT and systemic therapy were also completed as prescribed. Tolerance to treatment was excellent and no toxicity was registered. Patients with HT effective treatment time longer than the median (W90time > 88%) showed better actuarial PFS at 6 and 12months (100% and 66.7%, respectively) compared to those with less HT effective treatment time (50% and 0%, respectively) (p < 0.031). Median OS was 6months (range 1-36months). Stratification by GPI score showed a median OS of 3months (CI 95% 2.49-3.51) in Group A and 8.0months (CI 95% 5.15-10.41) in Group B (p = 0.035). Undifferentiated carcinoma of the colon is rare, and its prognosis is very poor. We report a case of undifferentiated carcinoma of the colon with rhabdoid features developed during treatment of non-small lung carcinoma (NSCLC) with pembrolizumab. A 58-year-old man was diagnosed with transverse colon cancer during chemotherapy with pembrolizumab for NSCLC. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy was performed. The histopathological diagnosis was undifferentiated carcinoma with rhabdoid features and lymph node metastasis. Immunohistochemically, programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) showed positivity. The microsatellite instability (MSI) status was low. He continued to receive pembrolizumab for NSCLC, and there have been no signs of colon cancer recurrence and progression of NSCLC for 15 months. We present the case of an undifferentiated carcinoma of the transverse colon with rhabdoid features. The development of the tumor with the expression of PD-L1 during pembrolizumab might have been associated with the low MSI.
