    Guinea pigs are frequently used in otologic research as animal models of cochlear-implant surgery. In robot-assisted surgical insertion of cochlear-implant electrode arrays, knowing the cochlea pose is required. A preoperative CT scan of the guinea-pig anatomy can be labeled and registered to the surgical system, however, this process can be expensive and time consuming.

    Anatomical features from both sides of 11 guinea-pig CT scans were labeled and registered, forming sets. Using a groupwise point-set registration algorithm, errors in cochlea position and modiolar-axis orientation were estimated for 11 iterations of registration where each feature set was used as a hold-out set containing a reduced number of features that could all be touched by a motion-tracking probe intraoperatively. The method was validated on 2000 simulated guinea-pig cochleae and six physical guinea-pig-skull cochleae.

    Validation on simulated cochleae resulted in cochlea-position estimates with a maximum error of 0.43 mm and modiolar-axis orientation estimates with a maximum error of 8.1 degrees for 96.7% of cochleae.     The Global Prevalence Study of Infections in Urinary tract in Community Setting (GPIU.COM) includes epidemiological aspects of acute cystitis (AC) in women in Germany and Switzerland. The primary study relates to the German version of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS), a self-reporting questionnaire for self-diagnosis and monitoring the symptomatic course of AC in women. The current study aimed to analyze the validity and reliability of the German ACSS in German-speaking female patients with AC in Switzerland.

    Anonymized patient data were collected and analyzed from women with AC at the first visit (diagnosis) and follow-up visits as baseline and controls, respectively. Data from 97 patients with a median age of 41years underwent analysis. Psychometric and diagnostic characteristics of the ACSS were measured and statistically analyzed.

    Average internal consistency of the ACSS resulted in a Cronbach's alpha (95% CI) of 0.86 (0.83; 0.89) and did not differ significantly between the Swiss and German cohorts. Diagnostic values of the ACSS for the Swiss cohort were relatively lower than for the German cohort, possible due to discrepancies between definitions of UTI in national guidelines.

    The analysis showed that the German version of the ACSS is also suitable for use in the German-speaking female population of Switzerland.     Due to their differing carcinogenesis, prognosis and clinical manifestation, human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated and HPV-negative oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have been classified separately as two entities since the 8th edition of the AJCC/UICC TNM staging system (UICC8).

    A total of 524 patients with OSCC treated between 2000 and 2016 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the University Hospital Muenster, Germany, were examined for the detection of HPV type 16-specific DNA (HPV16-DNA), nicotine and alcohol consumption and the influence of therapy on overall survival (OS).

    There was asignificant increase in the annual prevalence of HPV16-DNA-positive OSCC from 40% (n = 12/30) in 2000 to 46% (n = 18/39) in 2016 (p = 0.025, β = 0.539). Of the HPV16-DNA-positive OSCC, 89% (n = 212) were downgraded on the basis of UICC8 compared to UICC7. In the overall collective, frequent alcohol and nicotine (≥ 10 pack years) consumption showed asignificant negative influencn could influence the UICC classification in order to further improve prognostic significance.
    In the context of tumor surgery, the median mandibulotomy as an access route to the oral cavity and oropharynx provides an excellent overview of the surgical site. However, it is not regarded entirely unproblematic with regard to early and later complications that may arise.

    The results and complications of the median mandibulotomy will be presented based on data collected from our own patient collective.

The primary study relates to the German version of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS), a self-reporting questionnaire for self-diagnosis and monitoring the symptomatic course of AC in women. The current study aimed to analyze the validity and reliability of the German ACSS in German-speaking female patients with AC in Switzerland. Anonymized patient data were collected and analyzed from women with AC at the first visit (diagnosis) and follow-up visits as baseline and controls, respectively. Data from 97 patients with a median age of 41years underwent analysis. Psychometric and diagnostic characteristics of the ACSS were measured and statistically analyzed. Average internal consistency of the ACSS resulted in a Cronbach's alpha (95% CI) of 0.86 (0.83; 0.89) and did not differ significantly between the Swiss and German cohorts. Diagnostic values of the ACSS for the Swiss cohort were relatively lower than for the German cohort, possible due to discrepancies between definitions of UTI in national guidelines.   • The prediction of [Formula see text] values is one part of the statistical assessment of the modeling of proteins and ligands (SAMPL) blind challenges. Here, we use a molecular graph representation method called Geometric Scattering for Graphs (GSG) to transform atomic attributes to molecular features. The atomic attributes used here are parameters from classical molecular force fields including partial charges and Lennard-Jones interaction parameters. The molecular features from GSG are used as inputs to neural networks that are trained using a "master" dataset comprised of over 41,000 unique [Formula see text] values. The specific molecular targets in the SAMPL7 [Formula see text] prediction challenge were unique in that they all contained a sulfonyl moeity. This motivated a set of ClassicalGSG submissions where predictors were trained on different subsets of the master dataset that are filtered according to chemical types and/or the presence of the sulfonyl moeity. We find that our ranked prediction obtained 5th place with an RMSE of 0.77 [Formula see text] units and an MAE of 0.62, while one of our non-ranked predictions achieved first place among all submissions with an RMSE of 0.55 and an MAE of 0.44. After the conclusion of the challenge we also examined the performance of open-source force field parameters that allow for an end-to-end [Formula see text] predictor model General AMBER Force Field (GAFF), Universal Force Field (UFF), Merck Molecular Force Field 94 (MMFF94) and Ghemical. Thus, the user's previous experience on the target and the software has a direct impact on how data generated by FTMap server can be explored. DRUGpy plugin was developed to overcome this limitation. By automatically assembling and scoring all possible combinations of consensus sites, DRUGpy plugin provides FTMap users a straight-forward method to identify and characterize hot spots in protein targets. DRUGpy is available in all operating systems that support PyMOL software. DRUGpy promptly identifies and characterizes pockets that are predicted by FTMap to bind druglike molecules with high-affinity (druggable sites) or low-affinity (borderline sites) and reveals how protein conformational flexibility impacts on the target's druggability. The use of DRUGpy on the analysis of trypanothione reductases (TR), a validated drug target against trypanosomatids, showcases the usefulness of the plugin, and led to the identification of a druggable pocket in the conserved dimer interface present in this class of proteins, opening new perspectives to the design of selective inhibitors.
    End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) incidence has been increasing over time, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. However, there is limited data examining the psychosocial factors affecting people with ESKD and how the social worker fits within the multidisciplinary CKD care. This integrative systematic review aims to summarise the existing evidence on psychosocial determinants of outcomes in ESKD and the role of the social workerin nephrology care.

    The literature search was conducted using PubMed and MEDLINE, targeting articles published from database inception until May 2021. This systematic review was performed in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The Joanna Briggs Institute tools were employed to assess the quality of included studies.

    Of the 397 citations, 13 studies applicable to 1465 patients met the inclusion criteria. The studies were of cross-sectional, experimental, and exploratory qualitative design in nat physical and psychological stressors that patients with ESRD face, and highlights the positive role social workers can play in improving the psychosocial stressors in this patient group, and the need for large-scale randomised trials to understand the role of social workers as part of a multidisciplinary nephrology care.Renal biopsy is currently the gold standard for diagnosing active renal vasculitis. In this pilot study, metabolomics analysis was used to investigate the differences in metabolic profiles between paired patients' serum and urine samples collected during both the active and the remission phase of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV). Ten patients with AAV renal disease were included. Novel CP-associated genes are continuously emerging from genetic studies on CP cohorts, providing important clues for distinct mechanisms involved in CP development. On the basis of functional studies, the genetic alterations have been sub-grouped into CP-driving pathological pathways. This review focuses on the concept of CP as a complex disease driven by multiple genetic factors. We will discuss only well-defined genetic risk factors and distinct functional pathways involved in CP development, especially in the context of the early-onset nonalcoholic CP group. The diagnostic implications of the genetic testing will be addressed as well.High saturated fat diets have been associated with the development of obesity and hypertension, along with other pathologies related to the metabolic syndrome. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet, characterized by its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids, has been proposed as a dietary factor capable of positively regulating cardiovascular function. These effects have been linked to changes in the local renal renin angiotensin system (RAS) and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. The main goal of this study was to analyze the role of two dietary fat sources on aminopeptidases activities involved in local kidney RAS. Male Wistar rats (six months old) were fed during 24 weeks with three different diets the standard diet (S), the standard diet supplemented with virgin olive oil (20%) (VOO), or the standard diet enriched with butter (20%) plus cholesterol (0.1%) (Bch). Kidney samples were separated in medulla and cortex for aminopeptidase activities (AP) assay. Urine samples were collected for routine analysis by chemical tests. Aminopeptidase activities were determined by fluorometric methods in soluble (sol) and membrane-bound (mb) fractions of renal tissue, using arylamide derivatives as substrates. After the experimental period, the systolic blood pressure (SBP) values were similar in standard and VOO animals, and significantly lower than in the Bch group. At the same time, a significant increase in GluAP and IRAP activities were found in renal medulla of Bch animals. However, in VOO group the increase of GluAP activity in renal medulla was lower, while AspAP activity decreased in the renal cortex. Our results showed that heat treatment had a significant influence on color parameters of salmorejo, with pasteurized samples being less red and exhibiting an increase in the degree of browning. Pasteurized samples also showed the highest radical scavenging activity when expressing the results per dry weight. However, when water content was considered, radical scavenging activity was superior in homemade samples when analyzing non-polar molecules extracted with acetone. Results were similar for polyphenol content. It was also observed that heat treatment affected lycopene but not β-carotene content. Novel CP-associated genes are continuously emerging from genetic studies on CP cohorts, providing important clues for distinct mechanisms involved in CP development. On the basis of functional studies, the genetic alterations have been sub-grouped into CP-driving pathological pathways. This review focuses on the concept of CP as a complex disease driven by multiple genetic factors. We will discuss only well-defined genetic risk factors and distinct functional pathways involved in CP development, especially in the context of the early-onset nonalcoholic CP group. The diagnostic implications of the genetic testing will be addressed as well.High saturated fat diets have been associated with the development of obesity and hypertension, along with other pathologies related to the metabolic syndrome. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet, characterized by its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids, has been proposed as a dietary factor capable of positively regulating cardiovascular function. These effects have been linked to changes in the local renal renin angiotensin system (RAS) and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. The main goal of this study was to analyze the role of two dietary fat sources on aminopeptidases activities involved in local kidney RAS. Male Wistar rats (six months old) were fed during 24 weeks with three different diets the standard diet (S), the standard diet supplemented with virgin olive oil (20%) (VOO), or the standard diet enriched with butter (20%) plus cholesterol (0.1%) (Bch). Kidney samples were separated in medulla and cortex for aminopeptidase activities (AP) assay. Urine samples were collected for routine analysis by chemical tests. Aminopeptidase activities were determined by fluorometric methods in soluble (sol) and membrane-bound (mb) fractions of renal tissue, using arylamide derivatives as substrates. After the experimental period, the systolic blood pressure (SBP) values were similar in standard and VOO animals, and significantly lower than in the Bch group. At the same time, a significant increase in GluAP and IRAP activities were found in renal medulla of Bch animals. However, in VOO group the increase of GluAP activity in renal medulla was lower, while AspAP activity decreased in the renal cortex. Furthermore, the VOO diet also affected other aminopeptidase activities, such as TyrAP and pGluAP, related to the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system and the metabolic rate. Our results showed that heat treatment had a significant influence on color parameters of salmorejo, with pasteurized samples being less red and exhibiting an increase in the degree of browning. Pasteurized samples also showed the highest radical scavenging activity when expressing the results per dry weight. However, when water content was considered, radical scavenging activity was superior in homemade samples when analyzing non-polar molecules extracted with acetone. Results were similar for polyphenol content. It was also observed that heat treatment affected lycopene but not β-carotene content. When acquiring commercial salmorejo at the supermarket, consumers have the option to choose between already prepared pasteurized or raw salmorejo. To overcome these issues, we present an automated system using the Mask Region-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) architecture, with residual network as the backbone network for detecting blight disease patches on potato leaves in field conditions. The approach uses transfer learning, which can generate good results even with small datasets. The model was trained on a dataset of 1423 images of potato leaves obtained from fields in different geographical locations and at different times of the day. The images were manually annotated to create over 6200 labeled patches covering diseased and healthy portions of the leaf. The Mask R-CNN model was able to correctly differentiate between the diseased patch on the potato leaf and the similar-looking background soil patches, which can confound the outcome of binary classification. To improve the detection performance, the original RGB dataset was then converted to HSL, HSV, LAB, XYZ, and YCrCb color spaces. A separate model was created for each color space and tested on 417 field-based test images. This yielded 81.4% mean average precision on the LAB model and 56.9% mean average recall on the HSL model, slightly outperforming the original RGB color space model. GA is essential for plant growth and developmental regulation and plays an important role in improving crop plant architecture for enhanced grain yield under high nitrogen conditions. A complex regulatory network governs the spatially and temporally controlled genes expression through integrative GA signaling in response to multiple endogenous and environmental cues. In this review, we summarize current advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of DELLA-dependent and DELLA-independent GA signaling pathways and their contributions to plant developmental and metabolic adaptations to changes in nitrogen availability. The progress in molecular understanding of the plant growth-metabolic coordination will facilitate breeding strategies for future sustainable agriculture and a new Green Revolution.
    Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have led to a paradigm change in the management of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (****). Prospective trials have focused on ICI treatment in the first or second line. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the benefit of ICI across different treatment lines.

    This is a single-center retrospective study that included **** patients who received ICIs in various treatment lines. Objective response rates (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated.

    Ninety-four patients were eligible for full evaluation. Patients were classified as International **** Database Consortium (IMDC) risk group categorization as good, intermediate and poor risk in 26.8%, 61.6% and 14.8% of cases, respectively. They were treated with ICI monotherapy, dual ICI therapy and ICI+ tyrosine kinase inhibitor in 59%, 20% and 21% of cases, respectively. ORR, median PFS and OS for the entire cohort was 39.4%, 9.67 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 6.9-12.4 months] and 23.6 months (95% CI 13.3-33.9 months), respectively. Several enteric pathogens have developed strategies to sense neurochemical molecules to regulate their virulence in the gut. Additionally, there is growing evidence that gut dysbiosis can strongly affect host brain responses. Here we review different mechanisms that have been proposed to mediate gut-brain axis communication using Citrobacter rodentium, a natural murine enteric pathogen and one of the most widely used small animal models for studying host-microbe interactions. We highlight studies that have identified-specific pathways used by C. rodentium to sense host neurochemicals during colonization as well as behavioral responses and brain pathologies affected by pathogen colonization of the gut.
    PD-L1 expression on tumor cells (TCs) or immune cells (ICs) may be used as a prognostic marker for survival in patients with NSCLC. We characterized PD-L1 expression on TCs or ICs in a patient cohort with NSCLC to determine associations between PD-L1 expression and overall survival (OS), according to EGFR and KRAS mutation status.

    Danish patients aged >18 years diagnosed with NSCLC before 2014 on first- (N = 491), second- (N = 368), or third-line (N = 498) therapy were included. Data were extracted from population-based medical registries. Tumor samples from pathology archives were tested for biomarkers. High PD-L1 expression was defined as expression on ≥25 % of TCs or ICs based on first diagnostic biopsy or surgical resection. KRAS and EGFR mutation status were tested using PCR-based assays. Cox regression analysis was used to compute adjusted HRs and associated 95 % CIs.

    PD-L1 TC and IC ≥ 25 % were observed in 24.3 %-31.0 % and 11.7-14.7 % of patients, respectively. EGFR and KRAS mutations were detected in 4.7 %-8.8 % and 26.5 %-30.7 % of patients, respectively. PD-L1 TC ≥ 25 % was not associated with survival advantage in first- (HR = 0.96, 95 % CI 0.75-1.22), second- (1.08, 0.81-1.42), or third-line (0.94, 0.74-1.20) therapy. PD-L1 IC ≥ 25 % was associated with survival advantage in second-line (HR = 0.56, 95 % CI 0.36-0.86) and third-line (0.69, 0.49-0.97) but not first-line (1.00, 0.70-1.41) therapy.

Additionally, there is growing evidence that gut dysbiosis can strongly affect host brain responses. Here we review different mechanisms that have been proposed to mediate gut-brain axis communication using Citrobacter rodentium, a natural murine enteric pathogen and one of the most widely used small animal models for studying host-microbe interactions. We highlight studies that have identified-specific pathways used by C. rodentium to sense host neurochemicals during colonization as well as behavioral responses and brain pathologies affected by pathogen colonization of the gut. PD-L1 expression on tumor cells (TCs) or immune cells (ICs) may be used as a prognostic marker for survival in patients with NSCLC. We characterized PD-L1 expression on TCs or ICs in a patient cohort with NSCLC to determine associations between PD-L1 expression and overall survival (OS), according to EGFR and KRAS mutation status. Danish patients aged >18 years diagnosed with NSCLC before 2014 on first- (N = 491), second- (N = 368), or third-line (N = 498) therapy were included. Data were extracted from population-based medical registries. Tumor samples from pathology archives were tested for biomarkers. High PD-L1 expression was defined as expression on ≥25 % of TCs or ICs based on first diagnostic biopsy or surgical resection. KRAS and EGFR mutation status were tested using PCR-based assays. Cox regression analysis was used to compute adjusted HRs and associated 95 % CIs. PD-L1 TC and IC ≥ 25 % were observed in 24.3 %-31.0 % and 11.7-14.7 % of patients, respectively. EGFR and KRAS mutations were detected in 4.7 %-8.8 % and 26.5 %-30.7 % of patients, respectively. PD-L1 TC ≥ 25 % was not associated with survival advantage in first- (HR = 0.96, 95 % CI 0.75-1.22), second- (1.08, 0.81-1.42), or third-line (0.94, 0.74-1.20) therapy. PD-L1 IC ≥ 25 % was associated with survival advantage in second-line (HR = 0.56, 95 % CI 0.36-0.86) and third-line (0.69, 0.49-0.97) but not first-line (1.00, 0.70-1.41) therapy. No association was observed between PD-L1 TC ≥ 25 % and OS in any therapy line. PD-L1 IC ≥ 25 % may confer survival benefit among some patients who reach second-line therapy. There is a scarce of information related to episiotomy practice, and its associated factors, in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Stepwise backward elimination was applied for variable selection and model fitness was checked using Hosmer and Lemshows statistics test. Adjusted odds ratio with the corresponding 95% confidence interval was used to declare the significance of variables.

    In this study, the magnitude of episiotomy practice was found 44.15% (95% CI 39.32han the recommended value of WHO. The WHO recommends an episiotomy rate of 10% for all normal deliveries. The result of this study showed that episiotomy practice is common among mothers whose age group are 18-24.     A sequential explanatory mixed method was used involving women who were followed from the 3rd trimester of pregnancy to 3-4 months postnatally in Northwest, Tanzania. From January to December 2018, a door-to-door survey was conducted 3-4 months postnatally among 1385 of these women. A convenience sample of women and community health workers participated in focus group discussions, and traditional birth attendants and nurses participated in key informant interviews to complement quantitative data. Data analyses were conducted using STATA version 13 and NVIVO version 12.

    The expression level of gene higher in cancer than in adjacent non-cancer tissue was defined as "positive", and the top 5% genes with "positive rate" were filtered out as candidate diagnostic biomarkers in three Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets. Further, a prognostic risk model was constructed by multivariate Cox regression analysis in GEO dataset and validated in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The expression level of candidate biomarkers was determined in serum and serum-derived exosomes of GC patients. Moreover, the effect of biomarkers in exosomes on migration of GC cells was analyzed by transwell assay.

  • For decades, platelets have been known for their central role in hemostasis and their ability to release bioactive molecules, allowing inter-platelet communication and crosstalk with the immune system and vascular cells. However, with the detection of microRNAs in platelets and platelet-derived microvesicles (MVs), a new level of inter-cellular regulation was revealed. By shedding MVs from their plasma membrane, platelets are able to release functional microRNA complexes that are protected from plasma RNases. Upon contact with macrophages, endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells platelet microRNAs are rapidly internalized and fine-tune the functionality of the recipient cell by post-transcriptional reprogramming. Moreover, microRNA transfer by platelet MVs allows infiltration into tissues with limited cellular access such as solid tumors, thereby they not only modulate tumor progression but also provide a potential route for drug delivery. Understanding the precise mechanisms of horizontal transfer of platelet microRNAs under physiological and pathological conditions allows to design side-specific therapeutic (micro)RNA delivery systems. This review summarizes the current knowledge and the scientific evidence of horizontal microRNA transfer by platelets and platelet-derived MVs into vascular and non-vascular cells and its physiological consequences.

Renal infusion of capsaicin was used to stimulate renal afferents, and thus, to induce ERR. The ERR was evaluated by the changes in the contralateral renal sympathetic nerve activity and mean arterial pressure. At the age of 4 weeks, the early stage with a slight or moderate hypertension, the ERR was more enhanced in SHR compared with WKY. The pressor response was greater than the sympathetic activation response in the SHR. At the age of 12 weeks, the development stage with severe hypertension, there was no significant difference in the ERR between the WKY and SHR. At the age of 24 weeks, the later stage of hypertension with long-term several hypertensions, the ERR was more attenuated in the SHR compared with the WKY. In response to depolarizing voltage pulses, we measured transient outward currents with fast and slow activation kinetics, an outward background current, and an inward current with a potential-dependence resembling that of L-type Ca2+ channels. In cell-attached patch-clamp mode, large amplitude, paxilline-sensitive single channel openings were found in ≈65% of SR and ∼38% of AF fibroblasts, suggesting the presence of "big conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (BK Ca )" channels. The open probability of BK Ca was significantly lower in AF than in SR fibroblasts. When cultured in the presence of paxilline, the shape of fibroblasts became wider and less spindle-like. Our data confirm previous findings on cardiac fibroblast electrophysiology and extend them by illustrating differential channel expression in human atrial fibroblasts from SR and AF tissue.

The inorganic framework of (TFF)2SnI4 was separated by the bilayer TFF chains with an empty space, which is an effective structure to increase the quantum confinement effect. The band gaps of the (TPM)2SnI4 (1.80 eV) and (TFF)2SnI4 (1.73 eV) compounds indicate the direct band gap semiconductor materials. From the time-resolved photoluminescence results, it can be seen that (TPM)2SnI4 produces uniform short emission (0.73 ns) throughout the entire powder crystals, whereas (TFF)2SnI4 has a uniform and long emission life time (47 ns). Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) studies indicate that the (TPM)2SnI4 and (TFF)2SnI4 perovskites have a strong split red emission at low temperature due to the vibration of the inorganic framework. As the temperature increases, the PL spectra shift to the high energy region and the emission intensity decreases.     Twenty-one studies out of 2,215 available articles were eligible and included for this systematic review. Relevant articles were searched, screened and included in this study according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. The risk of bias in primary studies was assessed by Cochrane's method. Heterogeneity of pooled prevalence was calculated using the chi-square test on Cochrane's Q statistic, which was quantified by I-square values. The random-effects analyses of proportions were used to determine the pooled prevalence of DENV antibodies, antigen and RNA from eligible studies.

We included randomized clinical trials-with the standard of care as comparator arm with Imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam as intervention arm. For continuous variables, the mean difference was used. Although several frameworks and studies on vaccine distribution have been published, no published systematic review has evaluated the prioritization of the COVID-19 vaccine.

    We searched 4 different databases, PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and EMBASE for articles published between January 2019 and December 31, 2020. No definitive treatments have been established, and vaccinations have only recently begun. We aim to review the efficacy and safety of Interferon Beta (IFN-β) in patients who have a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis.

    A search from PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane, and Clinicaltrials.gov databases were conducted from December 2019 to December 2020 to review the efficacy and safety of IFN-β in adult patients with COVID-19 confirmed. We included randomized controlled trials, case reports, and experimental studies. Correspondences, letters, editorials, reviews, commentaries, case control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies that did not include any new clinical data were excluded.

    Toasted vine shoots have recently been proposed as enological additives with the aim of improving the sensorial profile of wines. In this study, we upscaled this knowledge on saguaro recruitment to a regional scale with a new method that used the inverse-growth modeling of 1,487 saguaros belonging to 13 populations in a latitudinal gradient ranging from arid desert to tropical thornscrub forest in Sonora, Mexico. Using generalized linear and additive mixed models, we created two 110-yr-long saguaro recruitment curves one driven only by previous size, and the second driven by size, drought, and soil structure. We found evidence that saguaro recruitment is indeed episodic, with periodicities of 20-30 yr, possibly related to strong El Niño Southern Oscillation events. Our results suggest that saguaros rely on multidecadal periodic pulses of good beneficial years to incorporate new individuals into their populations. Inverse-growth modeling can be used in a wide variety of plant species to study their recruitment dynamics.
    The prevalence of diabetes mellitus worldwide has increased in recent decades. Maintaining the level of blood glucose is the most basic and important issue for diabetics. This study aimed to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of a combination of hypoglycemic peptide-enriched hydrolysates of Corbicula fluminea (ACH) and Chlorella sorokiniana (PCH).

    Combined supplementation of ACH and PCH synergistically inhibited α-glucosidase and DPP4 activities in vitro. After 4 weeks of treatment with ACH and/or PCH, the plasma glucose concentration and insulin, homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels significantly decreased. The hypoglycemic peptides in ACH and PCH were purified and assayed for α-glucosidase and DPP4 activity. The hypoglycemic peptides in ACH and PCH effectively decreased α-glucosidase and DPP4 activities. In silico assays showed that these two peptide types have different docking poses, which determined their inhibitory effect against α-glucosidase and DPP4 activity.

    The brown rot fungus, Gnomoniopsis castanea, is the main organism responsible for the outbreak of chestnut postharvest decay that is threatening the sustainability of the chestnut market in Europe. Currently, no specific strategy is available to mitigate the impact and remediate the high losses of fruits in postharvest storage. In the present study, the different phases of chestnut handling in a standard facility plant were analyzed by evaluating the amount of fruit rot and infection by G. castanea at each phase.

    The warm bath (48 °C) was identified as the critical phase, requiring strict parametrization to effectively inactivate G. castanea in fruits. Laboratory tests indicated that maintaining fruits at 50 °C for a maximum of 45 min provided optimal conditions to completely inactivate G. castanea inoculum during postharvest handling. However, the warm bath at 50 °C and over was not effective in inactivating the complex of fungal taxa responsible for contamination and development of molds. Higher temperatures and extended treatment times caused significant losses in fruit quality, as indicated by taste panel evaluation. Upscaling of postharvest facilities is discussed and critically evaluated.

Moreover, given the need for quick techniques to be used in wineries to determine the main phenolic compounds of vine shoots, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been calibrated and validated. By means of a detailed statistical analysis, an enological classification of toasted vine shoots has been proposed based on their total polyphenol index and (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, ellagic acid, and trans-resveratrol. Moreover, the NIR methodology that was developed showed good validation statistics and acceptable accuracy.
