In the past decade, prescriptions for opioid medicines have been exponentially increasing, instigating opioid abuse as a global health crisis associated with high morbidity and mortality. In particular, diversion from the intended mode of opioid administration, such as injecting and snorting the opioid, is a major problem that contributes to this epidemic. In light of this, novel formulation strategies are needed to support efforts in reducing the prevalence and risks of opioid abuse. Here, modified release tramadol printlets (3D printed tablets) with alcohol-resistant and abuse-deterrent properties were prepared by direct powder extrusion three-dimensional (3D) printing. The printlets were fabricated using two grades of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC). Both formulations displayed strong ethanol-resistance and had moderate abuse-deterrent properties. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) was subsequently added into the formulations, which improved the printlets' resistance to physical tampering in nasal inhalation tests and delayed their dissolution in solvent extraction tests. Overall, this article reports for the first time the use of direct powder extrusion 3D printing to prepare drug products with both alcohol-resistant and abuse-deterrent properties. These results offer a novel approach for the safe and effective use of opioids that can contribute to the advantages that 3D printing provides in terms of on-demand dose personalisation. In the nervous system zinc is packaged into synaptic vesicles by the ZnT3 transporter, and synaptic release of zinc can influence the activity of postsynaptic cells, either directly through its own cognate receptors, or indirectly by modulating activation of receptors for other neurotransmitters. Here, we explore the anatomical and functional aspects of zinc in the circadian system. Melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells in the mouse retina were found to colocalize ZnT3, indicating that they can release zinc at their synaptic targets. While the master circadian clock in the hamster suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) was found to contain, at best, sparse zincergic input, the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) of hamsters and **** were found to have prominent zincergic input. Levels of zinc in these areas were not affected by time of day. Previous studies have shown that the presence of Arc mRNA primes mGluR-dependent long-term depression (LTD) in previously activated synapses upon re-exposure to the same environment. These studies suggest that the memory could be affected by the availability of Arc at the re-exposure time. Therefore, to confirm this, we investigated the changes in the temporal order memory and object recognition memory after the re-exposure to an environment in male ****. We studied the involvement of Arc in these changes by inhibiting Arc protein expression via stereotaxic infusions of Arc antisense oligodeoxynucleotides in the hippocampus of ****. We found that both temporal order and object recognition memories are dependent on the inter-familiarization phase interval. Strikingly, we also found that Arc accelerated the memory decay of an object when **** were re-exposed to the environment without that object. Care-providers, medical industries, and health-insurance companies also contribute to wish-fulfilling in medicine and dentistry. Various concepts of health and illness compounded by blurred borders between health and illness offer an unstable foundation for wish-fulfilling medicine, and growing demands for these services where healthcare resources are limited can displace medically necessary treatments. Moreover, treatments without a medical or a dental necessity, can be harmful and bear the risk of futile or excessive treatments not in patients' long-term interest. Examples in dentistry are found in the field of cosmetic interventions, prosthodontics and orthodontics, where perceptions of small 'deviations' from normality prompt wishes or recommendations for intervention.

  • Background Ruptured aneurysms of the intracranial vertebral artery (VA) or posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) are challenging to treat as they are often dissecting aneurysms necessitating direct sacrifice of the diseased segment, which is thought to carry high morbidity due to brainstem and cerebellar stroke. However, relatively few studies evaluating outcomes following VA or proximal PICA sacrifice exist. We sought to determine the efficacy and outcomes of endovascular VA/PICA sacrifice. Methods A retrospective series of ruptured VA/PICA aneurysms treated by endovascular sacrifice of the VA (including the PICA origin) or proximal PICA is reviewed. Collected data included demographic, radiologic, clinical, and disability information. Results Twenty-one patients were identified. Median age was 57 years (IQR 11); 15 were female. The Hunt and Hess grade was mostly 3 and 4 (18/21). Seven cases (33%) involved VA-V4 at the PICA take-off, and 14 cases (67%) involved the PICA exclusively. For VA pathology, V4 was sacrificed in all cases, while for PICA pathology, sacrificed segments included anterior medullary (4/14), lateral medullary (7/14), and tonsillomedullary (3/14) segments. Four patients went to hospice (19%). Twelve patients (57%) had evidence of stroke on follow-up imaging cerebellar (8), medullary (1), and both (3). One patient required suboccipital decompression for brainstem compression. No aneurysm re-rupture occurred. Median discharge modified Rankin Scale score was 2.0 (IQR 2), which decreased to 1.0 (IQR 1) at median follow-up of 6.5 months (IQR 23). Conclusions Endovascular sacrifice of V4 or PICA aneurysms may carry less morbidity than previously thought, and is a viable alternative for poor surgical candidates or those with good collateral perfusion.Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) is an emerging noninvasive imaging modality that can detect real-time dynamic information about the tumor microenvironment (TME) in humans and animals. Oxygen enhanced (OE)-MSOT can monitor tumor vasculature and oxygenation during disease development or therapy. Here we used MSOT and OE-MSOT to examine in **** the response of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) xenografts to a new class of anti-tumor drugs, heme-targeting agents heme-sequestering peptide 2 (HSP2) and cyclopamine tartrate (CycT). HSP2 inhibits heme uptake while CycT inhibits heme synthesis in NSCLC cells, where heme is essential for ATP generation via oxidative phosphorylation. HSP2 and CycT can inhibit ATP generation and thereby suppress NSCLC cell tumorigenic functions. MSOT showed that treatment of NSCLC tumors with HSP2 or CycT reduced total hemoglobin, increased oxygen saturation, and enhanced the amplitude of response to oxygen gas breathing challenge. The damage-induced long noncoding RNA, DINO (DINOL), is a TP53 transcriptional target that has been reported to bind to and stabilize TP53, thereby amplifying TP53 signaling. We show that HPV-positive cervical carcinoma cells contain low levels of DINO because of HPV E6/UBE3A-mediated TP53 degradation. Acute DINO expression overrides HPV16 E6/UBE3A-mediated TP53 degradation, causing TP53 stabilization and increased expression of TP53 transcriptional target modulator, causes TP53 reactivation in HPV-positive cervical cancer cells. This causes increased vulnerability to standard chemotherapeutics as well as biguanide compounds that cause metabolic stress. Hence, strategies that target DINO may be useful for restoring TP53 tumor suppressor activity in HPV-positive cancers and other tumor types that retain wild-type TP53.Many bacteria use flagellum-driven motility to swarm or move collectively over a surface terrain. We show here that the modification of motility parameters during swarming is not unique to E. coli but is shared by a diverse group of bacteria we examined-Proteus mirabilis, Serratia marcescens, Salmonella enterica, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa-suggesting that increasing run durations and speeds are a cornerstone of swarming.IMPORTANCE Bacteria within a swarm move characteristically in packs, displaying an intricate swirling motion in which hundreds of dynamic rafts continuously form and dissociate as the swarm colonizes an increasing expanse of territory. The demonstrated property of E. coli to reduce its tumble bias and hence increase its run duration during swarming is expected to maintain and promote side-by-side alignment and cohesion within the bacterial packs. In this study, we observed a similar low tumble bias in five different bacterial species, both Gram positive and Gram negative, each inhabiting a unique habitat and posing unique problems to our health. The unanimous display of an altered run-tumble bias in swarms of all species examined in this investigation suggests that this behavioral adaptation is crucial for swarming.

  • These results highlight the roles of the antioxidant defense system of the host plant in the tolerance to phytoplasma invasion.Temperature is one of the most important environmental factors driving the genome-to-phenome relationship. Metabolic rates and related biological processes are predicted to increase with temperature due to the biophysical laws of chemical reactions. However, selection can also act on these processes across scales of biological organization, from individual enzymes to whole organisms. Although some studies have examined thermal responses across multiple scales, there is no general consensus on how these responses vary depending on the level of organization, or whether rates actually follow predicted theoretical patterns such as Arrhenius-like exponential responses or thermal performance curves (TPCs) that show peak responses. Here, we performed a meta-analysis on studies of ectotherms where biological rates were measured across the same set of temperatures, but at multiple levels of biological organization enzyme activities, mitochondrial respiration, and/or whole-animal metabolic rates. Our final dataset conshenius predictions were more common (29%). This result suggests a classic assumption about thermal responses in biological rates is rarely observed in empirical datasets, although our results should be interpreted cautiously due to the lack of complete thermal profiles. We advocate for authors to explicitly address organizational disagreement in their interpretations and to measure thermal responses across a wider, more incremental range of temperatures. Wings from juvenile C. inca produced significantly quieter buzzes and most (three of four individuals) lacked the elongated barbs that are present in adults. Buzzing sounds produced in the wind tunnel were similar to those produced by wild birds indicating that these P7 feathers have been coopted to produce acoustic signals (sonations) during flight. Each study was also assessed for risk of bias in relation to the research question. Data analysis Meta-analysis was not possible owing to heterogeneous study designs and outcomes. Metabolic rates and related biological processes are predicted to increase with temperature due to the biophysical laws of chemical reactions. However, selection can also act on these processes across scales of biological organization, from individual enzymes to whole organisms. Although some studies have examined thermal responses across multiple scales, there is no general consensus on how these responses vary depending on the level of organization, or whether rates actually follow predicted theoretical patterns such as Arrhenius-like exponential responses or thermal performance curves (TPCs) that show peak responses. Here, we performed a meta-analysis on studies of ectotherms where biological rates were measured across the same set of temperatures, but at multiple levels of biological organization enzyme activities, mitochondrial respiration, and/or whole-animal metabolic rates. Our final dataset conshenius predictions were more common (29%). This result suggests a classic assumption about thermal responses in biological rates is rarely observed in empirical datasets, although our results should be interpreted cautiously due to the lack of complete thermal profiles. We advocate for authors to explicitly address organizational disagreement in their interpretations and to measure thermal responses across a wider, more incremental range of temperatures.   • Known techniques for modification of polypropylene membranes (PPm) often require modification of the membrane in its entire volume (i.e. at the manufacturing stage), which may affect its properties. In the present work, the authors proposed a simple method for PPm hydrophilization. The process involves a two-step Fenton-type reaction, with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinking agent and cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) as a source of free radicals. This hydrogel coating aims to enhance membrane hemocompatible and biocompatible properties. The biggest advantage of the proposed technique is the change of materials' surface properties, without interfering with its internal structure. Microscopic (SEM) and spectroscopic (FTIR-ATR) analyses confirmed the presence of hydrogel coating on PPm surfaces. Additionally, the evaluation of the surface density of the coating showed that the thickness of the coating increases with the reaction time and CHP concentration. The applied coatings significantly increase surface hydrophilicity (contact angle for PPm 128.58° ± 0.52°, for all modified surfaces less then 53.31° ± 2.03°). The cytotoxicity test (XTT assay) proved biocompatibility of the PVP coating - cell viability remained above 90% for all variants tested. The modification resulted in a decrease in fibrinogen adsorption (of at least about 16%) and in a number of surface-adhered platelets. The assay evaluating the amount of secreted cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1) showed a significant reduction (of at least about 50%) in the expression of ICAM-1 for all hydrogel-modified surfaces.In this study, fabrication of a three-dimensional porous scaffold was performed using freeze gelation method. Alginate and gelatin were mixed in three different ratios and the resulting solutions underwent freeze gelation to obtain 3D porous matrices. The injectable composite has the advantage to fill irregular shape implantation sites and quick setting at body temperature. The structural and morphological analysis of injectable BAG before and after setting was done by using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The effect of an ultrasonic scaler for a quick setting of injectable BAG was also investigated. The ultrasonic scaler sets the BAG formulation three-folds faster than at body temperature and homogenized the dispersion. The in vitro bio-adhesion was studied in the bovine tooth in both artificial saliva and deionized water for periodic time intervals, i.e., day 7, 30, 90, and 180, which confirmed the apatite layer formation. The mineral density analysis was used to differentiate the newly formed apatite with tooth apatite. In the MTT assay, the experimental material showed continuous proliferation and cell growth. This indicated that injectable hydrogel promoted cell growth, facilitated proliferation, and had no cytotoxic effect. The SEM and micro-CT results (performed after in vitro bioactivity testing) showed that the injectable BAG had the ability to regenerate dentin, hence this material has the potential to be used for dental and biomedical applications including tooth and bone regeneration in minimally invasive procedures in future.Pathogenic bacterial infections associated with wound healing progress usually result in serious complications. Herein, biocompatible and antimicrobial electrospun nanofibrous mats with photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect were fabricated to accelerate the infected wound healing. The nanofibrous mats were fabricated by co-electrospining of polyanionic poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) and cationic photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin tetra (p-toluenesulfonate) (TMPyP) in aqueous solution and stabilized by the chemical crosslinking. The as-prepared nanofibrous mats can not only confer the moist microenvironment to the wound bed, but also provide potent bactericidal activity upon visible light irradiation by releasing the cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antibacterial assay in vitro showed that they can effectively eradicate the board-spectrum bacteria at a relatively low loading dose of TMPyP (e.g., 0.1 wt%). Meanwhile, those nanofibrous mats showed good biocompatibility with no obvious adverse effects on mammalian cells and red blood cells (RBCs). The animal test in vivo suggested that the restrained inflammatory reaction and better wound healing could be achieved upon timely and effective antibacterial treatment with negligible local toxicities. This biocompatible and antibacterial γ-PGA-TMPyP nanofibrous mat may show great potential in practical infection-resistant applications, particularly for wound dressing applications.

  • Together, the CASS project generates comprehensive data to facilitate conventional breeding strategies for high-yielding cassava genotypes. It also builds the foundation for genome-scale metabolic modelling aiming to predict targets and bottlenecks in metabolic pathways. This information is used to engineer cassava genotypes with improved source-sink relations and increased yield potential.A novel crystalline coordination polymer containing Ce3+ and bis(4-nitrophenyl) phosphate (L), CeL3 , was synthesized and its unique transmetalation selectivities toward Yb3+ and Lu3+ in the lanthanide series were evaluated. The relatively large difference in transmetalation selectivity between the neighboring Tm3+ and Yb3+ species is noteworthy because the reactivities of heavy lanthanides are generally considerably similar. The structural strain of the polymeric framework is likely responsible for this unusual trend. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that, in the cases of only Yb3+ and Lu3+ , large differences in their ionic sizes compared to that of Ce3+ in the parent framework may induce a structural strain after solid solution formation, while cleavage of the relatively weak Ce-O bond allows the formation of new Yb-O and Lu-O bonds with the incoming Yb3+ and Lu3+ , respectively. Nevertheless, healthy infants have elevated levels of FC with large variations. The aim of our study was to determine the levels of FC and associated factors in healthy infants aged 0-12 months. Methods Infants younger than 1 year of age were in the follow-up programme of the Well Child Unit. Data on the clinical characteristics, including birth, anthropometric measurements and feeding types of infants in the unit, were obtained from their personal health records. One fresh stool sample was collected from each infant. ELISA was used to measure FC. Results We included 84 infants younger than 1 year of age. The median FC value was 313 μg/g. The FC levels were greater in the youngest (0-30 days) group of infants than in the oldest (181-365 days) group (P less then 0.001). The FC levels were higher in infants delivered by caesarean section than in those delivered vaginally (P = 0.016). The levels were also higher in infants who were solely breastfed than in those who received mixed feeding (breast milk and formula) during the first 6 months of life (P = 0.030). Conclusion The FC levels in this group of infants were high, especially in the first month of life. Several birth and environmental factors influenced the FC values. Methods The study used an observational cross-sectional design, involving clinically healthy, nonracing Greyhounds (n = 98) and nonsighthound dogs of similar weight, age, and sex (n = 24). Packed cell volumes, total solids, urine protein concentrations, serum and urine creatinine concentrations, urine specific gravity (USG) measurements, and UPCs were determined. Linear regression was used to compare urine creatinine and urine protein concentrations, relative to the USG measurements, between Greyhound and nonsighthound groups. Greyhound UPC RIs were determined using nonparametric methods and compared with UPC values in nonsighthounds and current IRIS guidelines. Results Mean urine creatinine concentrations, adjusted for USGs, were approximately 22% higher in Greyhounds compared with nonsighthounds (P = .002). Mean urine protein concentration (P = .46) and UPC (P = .1) were not significantly different between Greyhounds and nonsighthounds. The upper limit of the Greyhound UPC RI was 0.20 or 0.42, depending on whether strict or moderate exclusion criteria were applied, respectively. Conclusions Greyhounds have higher urine creatinine concentrations than nonsighthounds. Although the suggested RI for UPCs in Greyhounds is slightly lower than the cut-offs recommended in generic canine IRIS guidelines, this difference is not likely to be clinically significant.

The relatively large difference in transmetalation selectivity between the neighboring Tm3+ and Yb3+ species is noteworthy because the reactivities of heavy lanthanides are generally considerably similar. Nevertheless, healthy infants have elevated levels of FC with large variations. The aim of our study was to determine the levels of FC and associated factors in healthy infants aged 0-12 months. Methods Infants younger than 1 year of age were in the follow-up programme of the Well Child Unit. Data on the clinical characteristics, including birth, anthropometric measurements and feeding types of infants in the unit, were obtained from their personal health records. One fresh stool sample was collected from each infant. ELISA was used to measure FC. Results We included 84 infants younger than 1 year of age. The median FC value was 313 μg/g. The FC levels were greater in the youngest (0-30 days) group of infants than in the oldest (181-365 days) group (P less then 0.001). The FC levels were higher in infants delivered by caesarean section than in those delivered vaginally (P = 0.016). The levels were also higher in infants who were solely breastfed than in those who received mixed feeding (breast milk and formula) during the first 6 months of life (P = 0.030). Conclusion The FC levels in this group of infants were high, especially in the first month of life. Several birth and environmental factors influenced the FC values. Linear regression was used to compare urine creatinine and urine protein concentrations, relative to the USG measurements, between Greyhound and nonsighthound groups. Greyhound UPC RIs were determined using nonparametric methods and compared with UPC values in nonsighthounds and current IRIS guidelines. Results Mean urine creatinine concentrations, adjusted for USGs, were approximately 22% higher in Greyhounds compared with nonsighthounds (P = .002). Mean urine protein concentration (P = .46) and UPC (P = .1) were not significantly different between Greyhounds and nonsighthounds. The upper limit of the Greyhound UPC RI was 0.20 or 0.42, depending on whether strict or moderate exclusion criteria were applied, respectively. Conclusions Greyhounds have higher urine creatinine concentrations than nonsighthounds. Although the suggested RI for UPCs in Greyhounds is slightly lower than the cut-offs recommended in generic canine IRIS guidelines, this difference is not likely to be clinically significant.

Studies comparing repair with either meniscectomy or conservative treatment found greater improvement and slower progression of Kellgren-Lawrence grade with meniscal repair. A meta-analysis of the studies included in the systematic review using forest plots showed repair to have the greatest mean difference for functional outcomes (International Knee Documentation Committee and Lysholm Activity Scale) and the lowest change in follow-up joint space. Conclusions In patients who experience meniscal root tears, meniscal repair may provide the greatest improvement in function and lowest risk of conversion to TKA when compared with partial meniscectomy or conservative methods.   • In the context of a Blue Economy centred on sustainability and local benefits, ecotourism provides a key incentive and opportunity to improve ocean management.Sharks have been of great cultural and socioeconomic importance in Mexico since the late 19th century, when the first fisheries were prosecuted in the Gulf of California to export fins to China. Mexican shark and ray fisheries are classified mainly by the size of the fishing vessel and include small- (7.5-10m), medium- (10-27m), and large-sized (>27m) fisheries. All are multispecies fisheries that use longline or gillnet gear, with their relative productivity varying over time. Off the Pacific coast, early shark small size vessel fisheries in the Gulf of California were driven by the need for vitamin A from livers, especially during World War II. As this fishery declined, new shark fishing opportunities arose because of government support and the development of the medium-sized fishery, which was capable of farther offshore excursions. Shark meat became an important part of the diets of poor and impoverished citizens during the 1950s and 1960s. The establishment of a Mexican Exclusive Economic Zone in 1976 putainability of current fishing levels is unknown but should engender concern based on anecdotal evidence of serial depletion among historical elasmobranch targets in the Mexican Pacific.Marine animal tracking has become one of the major tools used to understand the behavior and ecology of a multitude of species in the ocean, thus there is an increasing body of knowledge about this subject worldwide, particularly for sharks. Demographic data, diagnosis, and in-office laryngoscopies were reviewed. All patients were evaluated by the same work team consisting of two Otolaryngologists specialized in vocal pathology and a speech voice therapist. Results A total of 126 new pediatric patients between the ages of 0 to 18 years were evaluated in the voice unit at Universidad Católica Clinical Hospital Santiago, Chile. The majority were males (54%) with an average age of 9 years. 40% of the diagnosis corresponded to vocal nodules, 26% to vocal cord cysts, the remaining to a group of less frequent diagnosis. Two different groups were studied, the first group evaluated during the years 2012-2015 with flexible fibre-optic laryngoscopy and rigid videolaryngostroboscopy (VLS); the second group evaluated between the years 2015-2019 with distal chip flexible videolaryngoscopy, distal chip flexible VLS and rigid VLS. In the second group, the diagnosis of vocal nodules decreased, and the diagnosis of vocal cord cysts increased in comparison to the first group. Conclusion Pediatric patients with dysphonia must be evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of experts and adequate equipment. VLS should be considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of vocal cord pathology in pediatric population.Background Singers are unique musicians because they use their whole body as a musical instrument. Posture and proprioception are key components for a robust and healthy voice. Objective This study aimed to analyze the postural control of lyric singers in different sensorimotor conditions. Methods Seventeen lyric singers were compared to a control group of 12 participants in static postural control test in eyes open (C1) and eyes closed (C2) conditions. Postural control of singers was also assessed in four specific singing conditions singing posture eyes open (C3) and eyes closed (C4), vocalization (C5) and free aria (C6), low values being representative of good postural control. Singers also completed the Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI) French version, low scores reflecting a good SVHI result. Results No significant difference was observed between the two groups in C1 and C2. Postural control of singers was more accurate in C3 than in C1. Increased values in all postural parameters were seen in the singing conditions. Scores obtained at the SVHI were correlated to the area covered by the center of foot pressure in C5, low scores at the SVHI being correlated with low area values in this postural condition. Conclusions Singing is a multitask situation which involves several movements including breathing, and management of factors such as stress. This can affect balance and so rigorous work on posture and proprioception is required as soon as a singer begins to perform in order to take care of the voice.Purpose Participation in sorority recruitment often results in acute vocal impairment. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the extent to which voice function and laryngeal appearance may be altered by participation in this social phenomenon. Methods Using a within-participant repeated measures design, nine women participating as sorority recruiters completed the study protocol. The following data were collected at two time points, immediately before and after the completion of two weeks of sorority recruitment stroboscopic laryngeal imaging, vocal acoustic measures, and perceptual measures of vocal effort and voice quality. Results Perceived phonatory effort and overall severity of voice quality were significantly impaired following sorority recruitment. All participants had evidence of mucosal changes in the form of one or more the following observed edema, erythema, increased vascularity, glottic margin changes. No significant differences in acoustic measures were identified. Conclusions Increased perceived vocal effort, increased overall severity ratings of voice quality, and deleterious vocal fold tissue changes observed support the hypothesis that the acute vocal loading that is characteristic of the sorority recruitment process contributes to a decline in voice function in the short term.

Conclusion Pediatric patients with dysphonia must be evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of experts and adequate equipment. VLS should be considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of vocal cord pathology in pediatric population.Background Singers are unique musicians because they use their whole body as a musical instrument. Posture and proprioception are key components for a robust and healthy voice. Objective This study aimed to analyze the postural control of lyric singers in different sensorimotor conditions. Methods Seventeen lyric singers were compared to a control group of 12 participants in static postural control test in eyes open (C1) and eyes closed (C2) conditions. Postural control of singers was also assessed in four specific singing conditions singing posture eyes open (C3) and eyes closed (C4), vocalization (C5) and free aria (C6), low values being representative of good postural control. Singers also completed the Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI) French version, low scores reflecting a good SVHI result. Results No significant difference was observed between the two groups in C1 and C2. Postural control of singers was more accurate in C3 than in C1. Increased values in all postural parameters were seen in the singing conditions. Scores obtained at the SVHI were correlated to the area covered by the center of foot pressure in C5, low scores at the SVHI being correlated with low area values in this postural condition. Conclusions Singing is a multitask situation which involves several movements including breathing, and management of factors such as stress. This can affect balance and so rigorous work on posture and proprioception is required as soon as a singer begins to perform in order to take care of the voice.Purpose Participation in sorority recruitment often results in acute vocal impairment. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the extent to which voice function and laryngeal appearance may be altered by participation in this social phenomenon. Methods Using a within-participant repeated measures design, nine women participating as sorority recruiters completed the study protocol. The following data were collected at two time points, immediately before and after the completion of two weeks of sorority recruitment stroboscopic laryngeal imaging, vocal acoustic measures, and perceptual measures of vocal effort and voice quality. Results Perceived phonatory effort and overall severity of voice quality were significantly impaired following sorority recruitment. All participants had evidence of mucosal changes in the form of one or more the following observed edema, erythema, increased vascularity, glottic margin changes. No significant differences in acoustic measures were identified. Conclusions Increased perceived vocal effort, increased overall severity ratings of voice quality, and deleterious vocal fold tissue changes observed support the hypothesis that the acute vocal loading that is characteristic of the sorority recruitment process contributes to a decline in voice function in the short term.

  • In the middle and late stage of liver failure, the cost-effectiveness ratio and incremental cost-effectiveness value of pre-DPMAS followed by equal plasma exchange plan was 122 865.5 and 284 334.97, and 70 744.55 and 75 299.48, respectively, which was less than three times of per capita GDP. The increased cost was acceptable and had economic advantages. The sensitivity analysis results showed that the basic analysis results were reliable. General clinicopathological data of the three groups were not statistically significant. The postoperative tumor-free survival rates at 1-, 2-, and 3-years were 71.4%, 51.0%, 38.8%, 86.1%, 75.0%, 66.7%, and 82.7%, 75.0%, and 59.6% respectively in A, B, and C groups.   • Background Posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is a promising treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients with MS. Participants who have elected to pursue PTNS therapy for LUTS will be eligible. The primary outcome is the median number of urinary frequency and incontinence episodes on a 3-day voiding diary at 3, 12 and 24 months compared to baseline. Methods After randomization to infected or non-infected groups, 30 Sprague-Dawley rats underwent a transverse osteotomy of the mid-shaft femur with a 5 mm defect. Additionally, the periosteum at the fracture zone was cauterized at both sides. After intramedullary inoculation with 103 CFU Staphylococcus aureus (infected group) or PBS (non-infected group), a fracture stabilization was done by intramedullary K-wires. After 5 weeks, the bone healing process was evaluated, and revision surgery was performed in order to obtain increased bone healing. The initial K-wires were removed,al model, which reflects a genuine clinical situation of an infection-related non-union model with segmental bone defects. Data collected was entered using epidata and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20. Results Mean (±SD = standard deviation) age of participants was 23.48 ± 17.025 years. 57.8% of the study subjects were male. There was a statistically significant interaction effect between gender and year of study on the combined knowledge questions (dependent variables) F(25,062) = 1.755,P = 0.014, Wilk's Λ = .033. Variables which were related to a positive attitude towards organ donation were being of the male sex (Odds Ratio = 1.156); having awareness about organ donation (Odds Ratio = 2.602); not having a belief on the importance of burying intact body (Odds Ratio = 5.434); willingness to donate blood (Odds Ratio = 4.813); and willingness to donate organ (Odds Ratio = 19.424). The use of PPE is a universal legal requirement to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses in the workplace. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess PPE utilization and its associated factors among building construction workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2019. Methods Institution based quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on the selected construction sites of Addis Ababa city from April 1 to May 18, 2019. Data were collected among all (206) building construction workers via interviewer-administered questionnaires. Data were entered into Epi info version 7.1 and exported to SPSS version 25 statistical software for analysis. Variables with a p-value of less than 0.20 in bivariate analysis were included in multivariate logistic regression. Finally, variace of PPE use training, presence of safety training, safety orientation, and governmental supervision were factors associated with PPE utilization. There should be continuous supervision of construction sites to assure all workers get material and training on how to use it.Background During transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURB), radio-frequency (RF) currents can lead to adverse neuromuscular stimulation (NMS). Here we present a novel ex vivo method to determine the risk of RF generators and their bipolar TURB modes to cause NMS. We aimed to develop an experimental platform for safety evaluation of new RF generators and their modes with a newly established test standard, suitable for replacement or reduction of animal testing. Methods We tested four contemporary RF generators with their bipolar modes for TURB in saline. A two-stage ex vivo approach was pursued First, we recorded voltages at possible positions of the obturator nerve behind a porcine bladder wall in a TURB model using 18 RF applications per generator. Second, these voltage records were used as stimuli to evoke nerve compound action potentials (CAPs) in isolated porcine axillary nerves. The NMS potential was defined as the ratio between the observed area under the CAPs and the theoretical CAP area at maximum response and a firing rate of 250 Hz, which would reliably induce tetanic muscle responses in most human subjects.

The results showed that the level of KLF15 transcription was increased first and then decreased in muscle during short-term starvation, and the protein level was gradually increased. Both the mRNA and protein level of the KLF15 returned to normal feeding level after refeeding for 7 days.   • Objective Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is heterogeneous, and variant histologies (VH) are more frequent than initially reported. Reporting VH is recommended by several guidelines because of prognostic and therapeutic implications. We evaluated the concordance of VH between the first transurethral resections of the bladder (TURBs) and the following radical cystectomy (RC). This paper is the first to compare VH with a central pathology review between TURB and RC. Material and methods In this retrospective study, we only included those patients who underwent TURB with VH and then RC between 01/2010 and 12/2013 at our institution. The presence of VH in both TURB and RC was assessed and compared according to the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) classification by a central pathology review. Results Among 110 patients who had the initial TURB/RC, 54 (49.1%) were diagnosed with VH, 48 (43%) had a single pattern, and six had (5%) multiple histological patterns. Squamous differentiation was the most common single VH (31%). Twenty patients with UC (18%) showed discordance between TURB and RC, especially in micropapillary versus nested (n=3) cases. Concordant histology between TURB/RC was seen in 82% of the cases. Conclusion Discrepancies can be seen between TURB and RC when reporting VH, which can be problematic for selection of therapy and management. TURB alone might be insufficient to evaluate the presence of VH, especially in VH with heavy therapeutic implications, such as micropapillary carcinomas. Hence there is a need to select the most appropriate dosage form and route of administration for improving the curative rate of psoriasis. Results A total of 108 systematic reviews of research and review articles was carried to make the manuscript comprehensible. The role of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of the disease is discussed for a better understanding of the selection of pharmacotherapy. The older and newer therapeutic moiety with its mode of administration for psoriasis treatment has been discussed. With a comparative review on topical and oral administration of first-line drugs such as methotrexate (MTX), cyclosporine (CsA), and betamethasone, its benefits-liabilities in the selected routes were accounted for. Emphasis has also been given towards advanced nanocarriers for dermatologic applications. Conclusion For better therapeutic outcome, proper selection of drug moiety with its appropriate administration is the major requisite. With the advent of nanotechnology, the development of nanocarrier for dermatologic application has been successfully demonstrated in positioning the systemically administrated drug into topical targeted delivery. In a nutshell, to achieve successful treatment strategies towards psoriasis, there is a need to focus on the development of stable, non-toxic nanocarrier for topical delivery. Inclusion of the existing orally administered drug moiety into nanocarriers for topical delivery is proposed, in order to enhance therapeutics payload with reduced side effects which serves as a better treatment approach for relief of the psoriasis condition.
