  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), when ruptured, results in high mortality. The identification of molecular pathways involved in AAA progression is required to improve AAA prognosis. The aim of the present study was to assess the key genes for the progression of AAA and their functional role. Genomic and clinical data of three independent cohorts were downloaded from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) (GSE57691, GSE7084, and GSE98278). To develop AAA diagnosis and progression-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs), we used a significance analysis of microarray (SAM). Spearman correlation test and gene set analysis were performed to identify potential enriched pathways for DEGs. Only the Frizzled-related protein (FRZB) gene and chromosome 1 open reading frame 24 (C1orf24) exhibited significant down-regulation in all analyses. With FRZB, the pathways were associated with RHO GTPase and elastin fiber formation. With C1orf24, the pathways were elastic fiber formation, extracellular matrix organization, and cell-cell communication. Since only FRZB was evolutionally conserved in the vertebrates, function of FRZB was validated using zebrafish embryos. Knockdown of frzb remarkably reduced vascular integrity in zebrafish embryos. We believe that FRZB is a key gene involved in AAA initiation and progression affecting vascular integrity.
    The liver and kidney inflammation due to bacterial infection is one of the most common pathological problems leading to tissue damage or disease. In many liver and kidney disorders, which represent serious global health burden with a high economic cost, oxidative stress-related inflammation and apoptosis are important pathogenic components, finally resulting in acute liver and/or kidney failure. Erythropoietin and its analogues are well known to influence the interaction between apoptosis and inflammation in liver and kidney.

    The aim of the present study is to investigate and clarify the effect of Gromphadorhina oblongata red algae on lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced acute liver and kidney injury of **** with endotoxemia and associated molecular mechanism from inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress levels.

    The current study cleared out that treatment of rats with the G. oblongata extract prior to LPS injection significantly lowered serum cytokines, including NF-κB, MPO and LPO, and improved liver apoptosis through suppressing protein tyrosine kinase signaling pathway, and that may be due to antibacterial activity as well antioxidant capacity of G. oblongata extract.

Therefore, GeneReg points at the need to couple gene regulation and metabolism to design rational metabolic engineering strategies.

Sebastiscus species, a marine rockfish, are of essential economic value. However, the taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships of Sebastidae have been controversial so far. Here, the mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of three species, S. tertius, S. albofasciatus, and S. marmoratus, were systemically investigated. The lengths of the mitogenomes' sequences of S. tertius, S. albofasciatus, and S. marmoratus were 16910, 17056, and 17580 bp, respectively. It contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and one identical control region (D-loop) among the three species. The genetic distance and Ka/Ks ratio analyses indicated 13 PCGs were suffering purifying selection and the selection pressures were different from certain deep-sea fishes, which were most likely due to the difference in their living environment. The phylogenetic tree was constructed by Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML). Most interestingly, the results indicated that Sebastidae and Scorpaenidae were grouped into a separate branch, so the taxonomic status of Sebastidae should be classified into subfamily Sebastinae. Our results may lead to a taxonomic revision of Scorpaenoidei.

    Anchoring filament protein ladinin-1 (LAD1) was related to the aggressive progression of breast, lung, laryngeal and thyroid cancers. However, the association of LAD1 with colorectal cancer remained unknown. Here, to determine the relationship of LAD1 with colorectal cancer progression, we explored the effect of LAD1 loss on the malignant features of colorectal cancer cells.

    We constructed LAD1-depleted cell lines and examined the effect of LAD1 deficiency on the phenotypic and molecular features of colorectal cancer cells in vitro. The function of LAD1 in metastasis in vivo was examined by establishing a spleen-to-liver metastasis mouse model. LAD1 protein expression in colorectal cancer patient specimens was assessed by immunohistochemistry of tumor microarrays.

    We found that LAD1 was abundant in most colorectal cancer cells. In addition, high expression of LAD1 significantly correlated with poor patient outcome. LAD1 depletion inhibited the migration and invasion of two different colorectal cancer cell lines, SW620 and Caco-2, without affecting their proliferation. In addition, LAD1 loss led to defects in liver metastasis of SW620 cells in the mouse model. Immunohistochemistry of colorectal cancer tissues revealed LAD1 enrichment in metastatic tissues compared to that in primary tumor and normal tissues.

    This study aimed to compare the echocardiographic changes and cardiac biomarkers between women with singleton and twin pregnancies.

    From April 2014 to March 2016, this longitudinal cohort study invited pregnant women who were scheduled to give birth at Hokkaido University Hospital. We analyzed prospectively collected data on simultaneously determined echocardiographic parameters and blood cardiac markers of 44 women with singleton and 22 women with twin pregnancies. Furthermore, we tested the mixed-effect models for echocardiographic parameters and cardiac biomarkers.

    During the third trimester and immediately postpartum (within 1 week after childbirth), the mean left atrial volume index and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) level were significantly higher in women with twin pregnancies than in those with singleton pregnancies. Women with twin pregnancies also had significantly smaller second-trimester inferior vena cava diameters and significantly higher third
    trimester creatinine levels than those withncies. BNP/NT-proBNP significantly positively correlated with LA volume index and E/e'. In women with singleton pregnancies, BNP secreted immediately after childbirth might improve the diastolic functions 1 month after childbirth.

Therefore, the aim of the present study is to analyse the trend of caesarean section deliveries among child-bearing women (aged 15-49 years) in Pakistan and to identify maternal socio-demographic factors and pregnancy-related variables associated with the change in caesarean deliveries from 1990 to 2018.

    Secondary data from Pakistan Demographic and Health Surveys (1990-2018) were analysed. The analysis of data was confined to child-bearing mothers. Sample sizes were 4029, 5721, 7461 and 8287 for the time periods of 1990-91, 2006-07, 2012-13 and 2017-18, respectively. Socio-demographic information of the mothers and pregnancy-related variables were taken as independent variables for the present study. The association between independent variables and caesarean deliveries was measured in terms of unadjusted odds ratios (OR) and adjusted OR (AOR).

    The percentages of the mothers whvery are a few important steps in Pakistan that can help in reducing caesarean deliveries which are not medically indicated.

Recently, increasing evidence has demonstrated that cancer cells exhibit a differential expression of potassium channels and this can contribute to cancer progression. However, their expression and localisation at the somatic level remains uncertain. In this study, we have investigated the expression levels of KCNB1 and KCNA5 genes encoding ubiquitous Kv2.1 and Kv1.5 potassium channels in gastric and colorectal tumours.

    Gastric and colorectal tumoral and peritumoral tissues were collected to evaluate the expression of KCNB1 and KCNA5 mRNA by quantitative PCR. Moreover, the immunohistochemical staining profile of Kv2.1 and Kv1.5 was assessed on 40 Formalin-Fixed and Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) gastric carcinoma tissues. Differences in gene expression between tumoral and peritumoral tissues were compared statistically with the Mann-Whitney U test. The association between they be promising prognostic markers for these tumours.

The aim of the study is to describe the maternal and neonatal clinical characteristics and outcome of pregnancies with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

    In this retrospective national-based study, we analyzed the medical records of all pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 and their neonates who were admitted to New-Jahra Hospital (NJH), Kuwait, between March 15th 2020 and May 31st 2020.   • Few fetuses survive childbirth when the mother is positive for Ebola virus, with almost all being miscarried or stillborn, or dying shortly after birth. Before 2019, only two infants had been reported surviving past 28 days, of whom one tested positive for Ebola virus and subsequently received experimental therapies. Little is understood regarding the care of surviving neonates born to Ebola virus-positive mothers in the postnatal period and how novel anti-Ebola virus therapies might affect neonatal outcomes.

    In this case series, we report on two neonates liveborn during the 2018-20 North Kivu Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who, along with their Ebola virus-positive mothers, received investigational monoclonal antibody treatment (mAB114 or REGN-EB3) as part of a randomised controlled trial (NCT03719586).

    Both infants were born Ebola-negative and progressed well while in the Ebola Treatment Centre. Neither neonate developed evidence of Ebola virus disease during the course of the admission, and both were Ebola-negative at 21 days and remained healthy at discharge.

    To our knowledge these neonates are the first documented as Ebola virus-negative at birth after being born to Ebola virus-positive mothers, and only the third and fourth neonates ever documented to have survived into infancy. Although no conclusions can be drawn from this small case series, and further research is required to investigate the neonatal effects of antibody therapies, these cases warrant review regarding whether post-delivery antibody therapy should be considered for all liveborn neonates of Ebola virus-positive mothers. In the context of a low resource setting, where survival of low-birthweight infants is poor, these cases also highlight the importance of adequate neonatal care.

    None.Ebstein anomaly (EA) and tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) are rare congenital malformations associated with nearly 50% mortality when diagnosed in utero. The diseases often produce severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) in the fetus and in some cases, pulmonary regurgitation (PR) and circular shunting ensue. Since the ductus arteriosus (DA) plays a critical role in the circular shunt and may be constricted by transplacental nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), we sought to assess the effect of NSAIDs on fetuses with EA/TVD. We reviewed mothers of singleton fetuses with EA/TVD and PR, indicative of circular shunting, who were offered NSAIDs at multiple centers from 2010 to 2018. Initial dosing consisted of indomethacin, followed by ibuprofen in most cases. Twenty-one patients at 10 centers were offered therapy at a median gestational age (GA) of 30.0 weeks (range 20.9 to 34.9). Most (15/21 = 71%) mothers received NSAIDs, and 12 of 15 (80%) achieved DA constriction after a median of 2.0 days (1.0 to 6.0). All fetuses with DA constriction had improved PR; 92% had improved Doppler patterns. Median GA at pregnancy outcome (live-birth or fetal demise) was 36.1 weeks (30.7 to 39.0) in fetuses with DA constriction versus 33 weeks (23.3 to 37.3) in fetuses who did not receive NSAIDs or achieve DA constriction (p = 0.040).     Few fetuses survive childbirth when the mother is positive for Ebola virus, with almost all being miscarried or stillborn, or dying shortly after birth. Before 2019, only two infants had been reported surviving past 28 days, of whom one tested positive for Ebola virus and subsequently received experimental therapies. Little is understood regarding the care of surviving neonates born to Ebola virus-positive mothers in the postnatal period and how novel anti-Ebola virus therapies might affect neonatal outcomes. In this case series, we report on two neonates liveborn during the 2018-20 North Kivu Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who, along with their Ebola virus-positive mothers, received investigational monoclonal antibody treatment (mAB114 or REGN-EB3) as part of a randomised controlled trial (NCT03719586). Both infants were born Ebola-negative and progressed well while in the Ebola Treatment Centre. Neither neonate developed evidence of Ebola virus disease during the course of the admission, and both were Ebola-negative at 21 days and remained healthy at discharge. To our knowledge these neonates are the first documented as Ebola virus-negative at birth after being born to Ebola virus-positive mothers, and only the third and fourth neonates ever documented to have survived into infancy. Although no conclusions can be drawn from this small case series, and further research is required to investigate the neonatal effects of antibody therapies, these cases warrant review regarding whether post-delivery antibody therapy should be considered for all liveborn neonates of Ebola virus-positive mothers. Since the ductus arteriosus (DA) plays a critical role in the circular shunt and may be constricted by transplacental nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), we sought to assess the effect of NSAIDs on fetuses with EA/TVD. We reviewed mothers of singleton fetuses with EA/TVD and PR, indicative of circular shunting, who were offered NSAIDs at multiple centers from 2010 to 2018.   • This study explores the symmetric and asymmetric effects of physical infrastructure on energy consumption, economic growth, and air pollution of Pakistan over the period 1990-2019. The ARDL results for the energy consumption model suggest that aircraft carriers (ACC) and road infrastructure foster energy consumption in the short term. For the growth model, the impact of trade is negative and significant in both short run and long run. The results for environmental pollution model suggest that information communication technology (ICT) is positively associated with CO2 emissions, whereas trade is negatively associated with emissions in the short and long run. The road has a positive impact on CO2 emissions while ACC has a negative impact in the long run. The nonlinear ARDL results reveal that negative component of ICT negatively influences energy consumption, while positive component has insignificant impact. Similarly, ACC, road, and trade also exhibit asymmetric effects. A total of 2498 blood samples of neonates were randomly collected by a standard heel puncture technique and dried on Guthrie cards from Shiraz newborn screening center. We provided questionnaire forms for mothers according to their demographic characteristics, such as age, place of residence, history of having cats as pet, and literacy level. ELISA immunocapture and PCR assays were applied to detect anti-Toxoplasma IgM and the parasite DNA in dried blood spot samples. The anti-Toxoplasma IgM antibody was detected in two out of the 2498 infants. Moreover, borderline titers were observed in 3 samples, which were considered suspicious, so these were retested after 18 months to detect IgG against Toxoplasma. Positive IgG titer was observed in two infants who had a positive IgM level. The genome of Toxoplasma was detected in one sample out of 2498. No significant differences were seen between the epidemiological factors with congenital infection. The incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis is estimated at 0.08% of studied samples. It seems that this incidence could present to the health ministry as a logical research achievement for the national screening program of newborns in Iran.Carrying out domestic research and development (R&D) activities can improve environmental performance. Due to the special conditions of this region, it is also regarded as the third pole of the Earth. The land cover and vegetation in this region have not been extensively studied, so this study investigated the possibility of using a combined classifier that was established based on D-S evidence theory to extract the land cover of the TP. Multiple feature images were obtained based on a single classification rule, and the feature images were normalized to obtain the basic probability assignment (BPA). The BPA was used as the evidence source to represent the belief level of each type of land cover. The information for the different belief levels was combined based on the D-S evidence theory. The maximum belief level of the combination results was used to identify the land cover types on the TP. The results of this study indicate that based on the D-S evidence theory, multiple classifiers can effectively be combined to improve the classification results. This study has also revealed that more classifiers fused together to make a combined classifier did not result in the combined classifier's accuracy being higher than those of the original classifiers. Higher accuracies were only obtained when more high accuracy evidence theory was used in the classifier combination, in which case, the combined classifier's classification accuracy was also high.Plastic pollution and the numerous consequences it has on aquatic life have become a huge concern in recent years. Currently available studies show the presence of plastic in river shores and fish gut, but more research should be carried out in order to know the extension and origin of plastic contamination. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify and characterize macro-, meso-, and microplastics found in the riverine beaches next to Rosario city, the most populated city standing by the lower Paraná River coast in Argentina. Mineral concentrations of food items are commonly reported in primate nutritional ecology studies and have been identified as important factors in primate food selection; however, very few studies have quantified daily mineral intake of free-ranging primates. We examined the concentration of 9 minerals (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn) in foods consumed by Colobus angolensis palliatus inhabiting the Diani Forest of Kenya, and test whether individuals preferentially selected leaves in accordance with their mineral concentrations. We also examined the effects of sex, group, and season on daily mineral intake, quantifying both percentage-based and mass-based intakes. We then compared daily mineral intake values to published recommendations. Behavioral data and plant samples were collected from July 2014 to December 2015. We found that individuals preferred leaves with greater P content and lower Ca content. Daily mineral intake differed significantly between sexes and among groups and seasons. These results are interpretable via differences in time spent feeding and total energy intake. Intakes fell below percentage-based recommendations for P, Na, Fe, Cu, and Mn but met or exceeded mass-based recommendations for all minerals except Na. This discrepancy is likely explained by the conservative nature of percentage-based mineral recommendations and the difficulty of comparing and scaling mass-based mineral recommendations among primate species. Studies that quantify daily mineral intake are needed to better understand the role of minerals on dietary selection, more accurately identify potential mineral deficiencies, and provide more informed recommendations for captive primates.

    Based on a sample of 197 surgery-seeking obese patients (preoperative body mass index [BMI] above 35 kg/m2) from a German bariatric surgery unit, the present cross-sectional study examined based on standardized self-rating measures whether depressive symptoms, dysfunctional eating behaviors, relationship satisfaction, and life satisfaction have a predictive value for work ability.

    Considerable impairment of work ability was found in 51.8% of morbidly obese participants (n = 102). Multiple regression analyses revealed that older age, greater depressive symptoms, and lower life satisfaction were significant predictors of preoperative work ability. BMI, gender, relationship satisfaction, and dysfunctional eating behaviors did not predict work ability.

    Topical agents are still the mainstay for the treatment of mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis, in which fixed combinations play an important role. Tazarotene/betamethasone dipropionate (Taz/BD) cream is a novel fixed combination approved for treating plaque psoriasis in China, but its efficacy and safety have not been verified in a real-world environment.

Patients who achieved ≥90% improvement in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) from baseline to week 4 were followed up to investigate relapse after drug withdrawal.     Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is recognized as a minimally invasive and curative treatment for superficial gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. However, ESD is still challenging and time-consuming with a high risk of adverse events such as bleeding and perforation. Various traction methods have been explored for maintaining good visualization of the submucosal layer during ESD. We developed a novel traction device (the EndoTrac) which can easily tie the thread and has the ability to change the towing direction. The aim of this study is to evaluate safety and feasibility of ESD using the EndoTrac for GI neoplasms.

    We retrospectively analyzed 44 patients (45 lesions) with esophageal, gastric, duodenal, and colorectal neoplasms who had undergone ESD using the EndoTrac device between June 2018 and May 2019. Primary outcome measures were preparation time, procedural success using the EndoTrac device, and ease of ability to change towing direction.

    Mean preparation time was 2 (2-5) min in esophagus, 3 (1-5) min in stomach, 6 (5-9) min in duodenum, and 4 (2-8) min in colorectum. The procedural success rate was 100% (8/8) in esophagus, 100% (21/21) in stomach, 100% (4/4) in duodenum, and 100% (12/12) in colorectum. The rate of successful towing to both proximal and distal sides was 100% (8/8) in esophagus, 100% (21/21) in stomach, 0% (0/4) in duodenum, and 100% (12/12) in colorectum.

    Non-syndromic hereditary hearing loss is characterized by extreme genetic heterogeneity. So far, more than 100 pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in TMC1 gene have been reported in patients with autosomal recessive hearing loss (HL) DFNB7/11. The prevailing auditory phenotype of individuals with DFNB7/11 is congenital, profound, bilateral HL, but the functional outcome after cochlear implantation (CI) described in the literature is variable. The objective of this work is to evaluate the auditory outcome after CI in pediatric patients with DFNB7/11, born to non-consanguineous parents.

    A retrospective analysis of genetic and audiological data of DFNB7/11 patients followed up in a single Italian otolaryngology clinic was performed. Mineral concentrations of food items are commonly reported in primate nutritional ecology studies and have been identified as important factors in primate food selection; however, very few studies have quantified daily mineral intake of free-ranging primates. We examined the concentration of 9 minerals (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn) in foods consumed by Colobus angolensis palliatus inhabiting the Diani Forest of Kenya, and test whether individuals preferentially selected leaves in accordance with their mineral concentrations. We also examined the effects of sex, group, and season on daily mineral intake, quantifying both percentage-based and mass-based intakes. We then compared daily mineral intake values to published recommendations. Behavioral data and plant samples were collected from July 2014 to December 2015. We found that individuals preferred leaves with greater P content and lower Ca content. Daily mineral intake differed significantly between sexes and among groups and seasons. These results are interpretable via differences in time spent feeding and total energy intake. Intakes fell below percentage-based recommendations for P, Na, Fe, Cu, and Mn but met or exceeded mass-based recommendations for all minerals except Na. This discrepancy is likely explained by the conservative nature of percentage-based mineral recommendations and the difficulty of comparing and scaling mass-based mineral recommendations among primate species. Studies that quantify daily mineral intake are needed to better understand the role of minerals on dietary selection, more accurately identify potential mineral deficiencies, and provide more informed recommendations for captive primates. Obesity is associated with a higher risk of work disability and premature early retirement. The aim of this study was to examine psychosocial predictors for work ability prior to surgery. Based on a sample of 197 surgery-seeking obese patients (preoperative body mass index [BMI] above 35 kg/m2) from a German bariatric surgery unit, the present cross-sectional study examined based on standardized self-rating measures whether depressive symptoms, dysfunctional eating behaviors, relationship satisfaction, and life satisfaction have a predictive value for work ability. Considerable impairment of work ability was found in 51.8% of morbidly obese participants (n = 102). Multiple regression analyses revealed that older age, greater depressive symptoms, and lower life satisfaction were significant predictors of preoperative work ability. The aim of this study is to evaluate safety and feasibility of ESD using the EndoTrac for GI neoplasms. We retrospectively analyzed 44 patients (45 lesions) with esophageal, gastric, duodenal, and colorectal neoplasms who had undergone ESD using the EndoTrac device between June 2018 and May 2019. Primary outcome measures were preparation time, procedural success using the EndoTrac device, and ease of ability to change towing direction. Mean preparation time was 2 (2-5) min in esophagus, 3 (1-5) min in stomach, 6 (5-9) min in duodenum, and 4 (2-8) min in colorectum. Extensive development of laboratory security will be required to realize the potential of this emerging field while protecting the bioeconomy and all of its stakeholders.Fluorescence imaging has been widely used as a powerful tool for in situ and real-time visualization of important analytes and biological events in live samples with remarkably high selectivity, sensitivity, and spatial resolution. Compared with one-photon fluorescence imaging, two-photon fluorescence imaging exhibits predominant advantages of minimal photodamage to samples, deep tissue penetration, and outstanding resolution. Recently, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have become a preferred choice in two-photon fluorescence biological imaging because of its unique bright fluorescence in solid and aggregate states and strong resistance to photobleaching. In this review, we will exclusively summarize the applications of AIE-active materials in two-photon fluorescence imaging with some representative examples from four aspects fluorescence detection, in vitro cell imaging, ex vivo tissue imaging, and in vivo vascular imaging. In addition, the current challenges and future development directions of AIE-active materials for two-photon bioimaging are briefly discussed.Persistent luminescence phosphors (PLPs) are largely used in biomedical areas owing to their unique advantages in reducing the autofluorescence and light-scattering interference from tissues. In addition, the crystal defects introduced by lanthanides-doping can serves as charge traps in PLPs, which contributes to the enhancement of persistent luminescence intensity and the increase of persistent time. In this paper, the research progress in the synthesis and biomedical applications of lanthanides-doped PLPs with NIR emissions are systematically summarized, which can provide instructions for the design and applications of PLPs in the future.The decontamination of water containing toxic metals is a challenging problem, and in the last years many efforts have been undertaken to discover efficient, cost-effective, robust, and handy technology for the decontamination of downstream water without endangering human health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 180 million people in the world have been exposed to toxic levels of arsenic from potable water. To date, a variety of techniques has been developed to maintain the arsenic concentration in potable water below the limit recommended by WHO (10 μg/L). Recently, a series of technological advancements in water remediation has been obtained from the rapid development of nanotechnology-based strategies that provide a remarkable control over nanoparticle design, allowing the tailoring of their properties toward specific applications. Among the plethora of nanomaterials and nanostructures proposed in the remediation field, graphene-based materials (G), due to their unique physico-chemical properties, surface area, size, shape, ionic mobility, and mechanical flexibility, are proposed for the development of reliable tools for water decontamination treatments. Moreover, an emerging class of 3D carbon materials characterized by the intrinsic properties of G together with new interesting physicochemical properties, such as high porosity, low density, unique electrochemical performance, has been recently proposed for water decontamination. The main design criteria used to develop remediation nanotechnology-based strategies have been reviewed, and special attention has been reserved for the advances of magnetic G and for nanostructures employed in the fabrication of membrane filtration.As intracellular parasites, viruses hijack the host cell metabolic machinery for their replication. Among other cellular proteins, the DEAD-box (DDX) RNA helicases have been shown to be hijacked by coronaviruses and to participate in essential DDX-mediated viral replication steps. Human DDX RNA helicases play essential roles in a broad array of biological processes and serve multiple roles at the virus-host interface. The viral proteins responsible for DDX interactions are highly conserved among coronaviruses, suggesting that they might also play conserved functions in the SARS-CoV-2 replication cycle. In this review, we provide an update of the structural and functional data of DDX as possible key factors involved in SARS-CoV-2 hijacking mechanisms. We also attempt to fill the existing gaps in the available structural information through homology modeling. Based on this information, we propose possible paths exploited by the virus to replicate more efficiently by taking advantage of host DDX proteins. Subtype analysis revealed subtype A1, C, D and inter-subtype recombinants were 42%, 38%, 11% and 9% respectively. With the cooperation of his colleagues, Prof. Jamshid Lotfi conducted the first MS-related paper. The Iranian MS Society was established in 1998 in Iran, and is currently a member of the MS International Federation (MSIF). The present study focuses on three subjects of a family showing a history of repeated episodes of lethargy and pallor of unknown etiology. All patients displayed reticulocytosis and spherocytosis and one of them had anemia and splenomegaly. The patients underwent screening tests to rule in/out possible underlying disorders, and deficiency/dysfunction of RBC membrane proteins was suspected. Definitive diagnosis can be made on the basis of membrane protein analysis by quantitative sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Interestingly, all patients showed marked decrease in the protein 4.2 expression and therefore, HS was confirmed. This case report highlights the simultaneous occurrence of protein 4.2-dependent "typical" and "atypical" HS in a family and serves as a reminder to clinicians to consider RBC membrane disorders in patients presenting with suspicious and unexplained clinical signs.

The first MS paper published by Iranian scientists dates back to 1963, when a case of hereditary spastic ataxia mimicking MS was reported. With the cooperation of his colleagues, Prof. Jamshid Lotfi conducted the first MS-related paper. The Iranian MS Society was established in 1998 in Iran, and is currently a member of the MS International Federation (MSIF). Progressively, after the scientific development of Iranian universities and recognizing the importance of the disease, the first specialized MS ward was established in Sina hospital by Prof. Mohammad Ali Sahraian and was followed by the establishment of the first MS research center. MS Society is presently quite active and the Iranian MS congress is annually held in one of the Iranian universities to review the most recent achievements in the field of the disease. The present study aims to illustrate the history of the efforts made on the way, and attempts to introduce the people who took significant steps in this regard. © 2020 The Author(s). The present study focuses on three subjects of a family showing a history of repeated episodes of lethargy and pallor of unknown etiology. All patients displayed reticulocytosis and spherocytosis and one of them had anemia and splenomegaly. The patients underwent screening tests to rule in/out possible underlying disorders, and deficiency/dysfunction of RBC membrane proteins was suspected. Definitive diagnosis can be made on the basis of membrane protein analysis by quantitative sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Interestingly, all patients showed marked decrease in the protein 4.2 expression and therefore, HS was confirmed. This case report highlights the simultaneous occurrence of protein 4.2-dependent "typical" and "atypical" HS in a family and serves as a reminder to clinicians to consider RBC membrane disorders in patients presenting with suspicious and unexplained clinical signs.

    Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective treatment for gastric neoplasms in elderly patients; however, it involves several adverse events, including pneumonia. This study aimed to investigate whether skeletal muscle depletion (SMD) was associated with the development of pneumonia in elderly patients who underwent gastric ESD.

    This retrospective observational cohort study included 157 patients (≥80 years) who had undergone gastric ESD. The skeletal muscle cross-sectional area was measured by CT, and the value of the third lumbar vertebra skeletal muscle index (L3 SMI) was evaluated. The SMD was defined as an L3 SMI value ≤38.0 cm2/m2 for women and ≤42.0 cm2/m2 for men. Pneumonia was also diagnosed using CT to identify all included patients.

    Among 157 patients, 66 (42.0%) showed SMD. In the SMD group, the incidence of pneumonia was 21.2%, whereas it was 7.7% in the non-SMD group (p = 0.018). The longest hospitalization duration was 19 days. Antibiotics were administered in 61.9% of the patients. Procedure time was not significantly different between the groups (72 ± 54 min vs. 62 ± 44 min, p = 0.201). On multivariate analysis, SMD was an independent risk factor for the development of pneumonia (odds ratio = 3.16, 95% confidence interval, 1.18-8.50, p = 0.023).

    Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide, with about 841,000 new cases and 782,000 deaths annually. Given the clearly defined population at risk, mostly patients with liver cirrhosis, prevention of HCC could be highly effective.

    Besides regular ultrasound surveillance, numerous publications have suggested protective effects of diverse drugs and nutrients. However, none of those preventive options has made it into clinical routine or practice guidelines. We therefore summarize the current status of preventive effects of drugs such as statins, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), and metformin, but also dietary aspects and nutrients such as coffee, tea, and vitamin D supplementation. A successful implementation of some of these strategies may potentially lead to improved prevention of HCC development in patients with liver cirrhosis. Key Messages Accumulating data suggest that particularly ASA, antidiabetic therapies, and statins may substantially decrease HCC incidence in patients at risk.

  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based yolk-shell nanostructures have drawn enormous attention recently due to their multifunctionality. However, the regulations of the size and morphology of yolk-shell nanostructures are still limited by the unclear formation mechanism. Herein, we first demonstrated a solvent-dependent adsorption-driven mechanism for synthesizing yolk-shelled MOFs-based nanostructures coated with mesoporous SiO2 shells (ZIF-8@mSiO2 ) with tunable size and morphology. The selective and competitive adsorption of methanol (CH3 OH) and water (H2 O) on ZIF-8 core were found to have decisive effects on inducing the morphology evolution of yolk-shell nanostructures. The obtained yolk-shelled ZIF-8@mSiO2 nanostructures show great promise in generating acoustic cavitation effect for sonodynamic cancer therapy in vitro. We believe that this work will not only help us to design novel MOFs-based yolk-shell nanostructures, but also promote the widespread application of MOFs materials.Breastmilk sharing via the internet has become more popular in recent years, with a resultant increase in media attention. It is actively discouraged by public health bodies in at least three countries. We undertook a qualitative analysis of worldwide English language news media (online newspaper articles and transcripts of television and radio pieces) focusing on peer-to-peer breastmilk sharing during a 24-month period (2015-2016). One hundred eleven news articles were analysed semiotically for positive (n = 49) and negative (n = 90) depictions of breastmilk sharing and the actors involved. Three countries published the majority of the articles United States (n = 42), United Kingdom (n = 24) and Australia (n = 20). Topics associated with using shared breastmilk included perceived insufficiency, having surgery or taking medication, or the prematurity of the baby. Reports of women who gave and received breastmilk were largely positive although sometimes confused with women who sell breastmilk, who were demonised. The breastmilk itself, however, was considered as potentially contaminated and possibly dangerous; calls for action (n = 33) focused on increasing regulation and safety. Peer-to-peer milk sharing and the commercial availability of human milk are activities that occur within social and cultural contexts, and, as such, the ways in which they are represented in the news media reflect the ways in which they are also represented more widely in society. Increased understanding of normal infant feeding practices is needed, alongside guidance on how to better support breastfeeding. News media outlets can facilitate this through reporting risk in line with evidence. Further research should be undertaken to understand the safety of breastmilk sharing and the experience of those who participate.
    To describe the extent of perceived collaboration between family caregivers of older persons and hospital nurses.

    Collaboration between hospital nurses and family caregivers is of increasing importance in older patient's care. Research lacks a specific focus on family caregiver's collaboration with nurses.

    Using a cross-sectional design, 302 caregivers of older patients (≥70years) completed the 20-item Family Collaboration Scale with the subscales trust in nursing care, accessible nurse and influence on decisions. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations.

    Family caregivers rated their level of trust in nurses and nurses' accessibility higher than the level of their influence on decisions. Family caregivers who had more contact with nurses perceived higher levels of influence on decisions (p≤.001) and overall collaboration (p≤.001).

    Family caregivers' collaboration with nurses can be improved, especially in recognizing and exploiting family caregivers as partner in the care for older hospitalized persons and regarding their level of influence on decisions.

    Insight into family caregivers' collaboration with nurses will help nurse managers to jointly develop policy with nurses on how to organise more family caregivers' involvement in the standard care for older persons.

    The present study aims to evaluate the potential antioxidant and antiproliferative properties of probiotic bacterial isolates Weissella cibaria p3B, Bacillus subtilis CS, and Bacillus tequilensis CL, isolated from South Indian fermented tomato pickle (homemade) and gut content of indigenous country chicken.

    The bacterial isolates exhibited antimicrobial activity against food-borne, human pathogenic bacteria, along with better survival under different bile and acidic conditions, hydrophobicity towards several hydrocarbons, and adherence to intestinal epithelial cells (INT-407 cells). Also, the intact cell (IC) mixture of the three species showed better DPPH, ABTS, and Fe
    chelating activity as compared to the individual IC or cell extract (CE) activity. A self-administered questionnaire was administered to all new patients to the dermatology outpatient clinic. The questionnaire had questions on sociodemographic data, self-medication, what specifically was used by the patients, source of information, and reasons for self-medication. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0. Statistics such as means, medians, and frequencies. t test and chi-square test are presented. The mean age of the patients was 37.9 ± 16.3. The prevalence of self-medication was 63.7%. The pattern of self-medication was herbal only in 11.7%, western medication only in 45.6%, and western and herbal in 42.
