  • Plantago ovata is a medicinal plant, rich in fibre. Its seed-husk (psyllium) is used to control constipation, obesity, diabetes and cholesterol levels etc. In the presented study, it was incorporated into poultry meat formulations and the quality parameters of the cooked samples were tested.

    Ground thigh meat from chicken was mixed with water and powdered Plantago ovata husk. The amount of water and husk ranged between 0-40% and 0-3%, respectively. The proximate composition of raw batters and cooked samples was tested. Production yields were calculated after cooking the samples in a water bath. Water activity, texture and colour parameters were analysed in the cooked samples.

    Fat content was lower in the samples with higher water addition. Water activity was lower in the samples with psyllium, but increased in the case of the highest water addition. Production yields were the highest while hardness was the lowest in the sample with both 3% of Plantago ovata husk and 40% of water. Lightness decreased when psyllium was added while redness decreased with both psyllium and water addition.

    The formulation with 40% of water and 3% of psyllium was chosen as the best, due to high production yields. Further tests should be conducted to test microbiological stability, shelf-life and consumer acceptance of products manufactured according to the abovementioned parameters.

In recent times, lyophilization has become an accepted method for preserving different herbs and spices as it has many advantages compared with other drying and preservation techniques. However, only relatively little and contradictory information is available in relation to the formation of essential oils during freeze-drying. This review aims to summarize the effects of lyophilization on the essential oil content and composition of herbs and spices.

Laser diffractometry was used to determine the particle size (dispersion) of the crystalforming agents. Prepared syrup samples were used to obtain the massecuite, which was boiled in a laboratory vacuum evaporator in conditions maximally adapted to production. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of adding sodium octanoate to the culture medium, with a view to increasing the synthesis and production of the pigments produced by Monascus ruber CCT 3802 on solid and submerged cultivations.

The radial growth rate of the colonies was obtained from the declivity of the linear regression of the radius of the colonies as a function of cultivation time and the kinetics of submerged cultivations were performed. The filtrate obtained was submitted to scanning spectrophotometry at a range from 350 to 550 nm and the color parameters were determined by using the CIELAB color system. The data were submitted to a univariate analyions. The supplementation of the submerged cultures with sodium octanoate was responsible for an expressive production of pigments in just 48 hours, whereas 144 hours were necessary in the absence of sodium octanoate. These results are promising for increasing the productivity of pigment production, including possibilities for application on an industrial scale.

Unsafe drinking water is a risk factor for chronic and enteric diseases. Both chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diarrheal disease are highly prevalent in the Lake Chapala basin, Jalisco, Mexico, suggesting disparities in factors leading to successful achievement of these two SDGs.

    This study aimed to assess progress towards SDG three and six in the Lake Chapala basin. Qualitative, quantitative, and geospatial data were collected between May and August of 2019 from three towns within the municipalities of Poncitlán and Chapala.

Both chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diarrheal disease are highly prevalent in the Lake Chapala basin, Jalisco, Mexico, suggesting disparities in factors leading to successful achievement of these two SDGs. This study aimed to assess progress towards SDG three and six in the Lake Chapala basin. Qualitative, quantitative, and geospatial data were collected between May and August of 2019 from three towns within the municipalities of Poncitlán and Chapala. Ninety-nine households participated in this study. Water sampling analyses determined 81.18% of samples from water jugs (garrafones) and 70.05% of samples from tap water were contaminated with total coliform bacteria, often including . Additionally, 32% of garrafón samples and 61.9% of tap water samples had detectable levels of arsenic. In addition, a recent study demonstrated that cattle farmers are well aware of the recommended BSM and recognize them as more effective (in terms of time and costs) than treatment for disease. Therefore, other factors must be considered when it comes to understanding the decision-making process followed by a farmer regarding the adoption of BSM. This study analysed the possible influence of five mental constructs described in the health belief model (HBM) on the adoption of BSM and assessed the possible association of these constructs with different demographic and socio-psychological factors. However, the effect of severity of AVWP on urethral pressure is controversial. This study aimed to evaluate parameters of the urethral pressure profile in different stages of AVWP.

    From 2016 to 2017, 286 consecutive patients with urogynecologic complaints who were referred to our urodynamic unit were enrolled in this study to analyze their urethral pressure profiles. Stages of AVWP were regrouped into three groups ranging from mild to severe stages (groups 1-3). Maximal urethral pressure, urethral closure pressure, functional urethral length, length of continence zone, as well as area of continence zone were compared among these three groups.

    Distribution of age, parity, and menopausal women were significantly different among these three groups. Maximal urethral pressure (pressures for groups 1, 2, and 3 were 74.6∼75.9cmH2O, 69.7∼73.4cmH2O, and 58.3∼60.5cmH2O, respectively; all P<.05) and stress urethral closure pressure (pressures for groups 1, 2, and 3 were 69.3cmH2O, 62.3cmH2O, and 52.2cmH2O, respectively; all P<.05) gradually and significantly decreased, consistent with the severity of AVWP. However, the attenuated maximal urethral pressure and stress urethral closure pressure in accordance with severity did not show any significant difference after controlling for age, body mass index, parity, menopause, and stress urinary incontinence symptoms.

We have studied the potential of MaR1 to inhibit pro-inflammatory activation of Aβ and assessed its ability to stimulate phagocytosis of Aβ42 . MaR1 inhibited the Aβ42 -induced increase in cytokine secretion and stimulated the uptake of Aβ42 in both MdM and differentiated THP-1 cells. MaR1 was also found to decrease chemokine secretion and reduce the associated increase in the activation marker CD40. Activation of kinases involved in transduction of inflammation was not affected by MaR1, but the activity of nuclear factor (NF)-κB was decreased. Although the uterine closure technique following this procedure may influence how the uterine scar heals, there is insufficient evidence for choosing the appropriate technique and so preventing long-term negative consequences. This prospective, randomized study examined the effects of single- and double-layer uterine closure techniques on uterine scar healing following cesarean delivery.

    This study assessed a total of 282 women aged 18-45years who were in gestational weeks 24-41 of singleton pregnancies. None had previously undergone uterine surgeries. These participants completed their first cesarean deliveries at the time of study and were randomized into the following two treatment groups single-layer closure with locking and double-layer closure with locking in the first layer, but not in the second layer (NCT03629028). However, the decidua was not included for treatment in either group. Participants were evaluated at 6-9months after cesarean section by saline infusion sonohysterography to assess cesarean delivery scar defects. These procedures were conducted by experienced sonographers who were not aware of the uterine closure technique.

All patients who received ECLS from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2019 at a single institution were included. Primary outcomes were survival to ECLS decannulation and discharge or transfer. Secondary outcomes included complications from ECLS. Data were compared to available ELSO registry data. Thirty-seven patients underwent 44 ECLS runs during the study period. Forty percent of patients had single ventricle physiology. Nearly 46% of patients received ECLS as part of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR). Survival to ECLS decannulation (68.2%) and survival to discharge or transfer (61.4%) did not differ from overall ELSO outcomes (69.7%, P = .870 and 50.7%, P = .136), as well as survival to discharge or transfer in a comparable cohort of ELSO centers (53.1%, P = .081). Patients with complications had a lower rate of survival to discharge or transfer but this did not reach statistical significance (47.7% vs. 75.0%, P = .455). Neurologic (50.0%), hemorrhagic (45.5%), and renal complications (31.8%) were most common in this cohort. A modified ventricular assist device-based ECLS circuit with primary management by the bedside nurse can provide comparable support in a neonatal and pediatric cardiac surgery population. This study assessed a total of 282 women aged 18-45years who were in gestational weeks 24-41 of singleton pregnancies. None had previously undergone uterine surgeries. These participants completed their first cesarean deliveries at the time of study and were randomized into the following two treatment groups single-layer closure with locking and double-layer closure with locking in the first layer, but not in the second layer (NCT03629028). However, the decidua was not included for treatment in either group. Participants were evaluated at 6-9months after cesarean section by saline infusion sonohysterography to assess cesarean delivery scar defects. All patients who received ECLS from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2019 at a single institution were included. Primary outcomes were survival to ECLS decannulation and discharge or transfer. Secondary outcomes included complications from ECLS. Data were compared to available ELSO registry data. Thirty-seven patients underwent 44 ECLS runs during the study period. Forty percent of patients had single ventricle physiology. Nearly 46% of patients received ECLS as part of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR). Survival to ECLS decannulation (68.2%) and survival to discharge or transfer (61.4%) did not differ from overall ELSO outcomes (69.7%, P = .870 and 50.7%, P = .136), as well as survival to discharge or transfer in a comparable cohort of ELSO centers (53.1%, P = .081).   • The homing journeys of nine loggerhead turtles translocated from their nesting beach to offshore release sites, were reconstructed through Argos and GPS telemetry while their water-related orientation was simultaneously recorded at high temporal resolution by multi-sensor data loggers featuring a three-axis magnetic sensor. All turtles managed to return to the nesting beach area, although with indirect routes encompassing an initial straight leg not precisely oriented towards home, and a successive homebound segment carried out along the coast. Logger data revealed that, after an initial period of disorientation, turtles were able to precisely maintain a consistent direction for several hours while moving in the open sea, even during night-time. Their water-related headings were in accordance with the orientation of the resulting route, showing little or no effect of current drift. This study reveals a biphasic homing strategy of displaced turtles involving an initial orientation weakly related to home and a successive shift to coastal navigation, which is in line with the modern conceptual framework of animal migratory navigation as deriving from sequential mechanisms acting at different spatial scales.Molecular mechanisms that prompt or mitigate excessive alcohol consumption could be partly explained by metabolic shifts. On the other hand, the N400 was insensitive to the sharing or distribution of the two individuals' attentional focus. Interestingly, the N400 was reduced when the interaction outcome was preceded either by mutual eye contact or by a perceived pointing gesture. The N300 amplitude was reduced when the two individuals shared their focus of attention, which indicates the operation of a cognitive process that involves the relatively fast identification and evaluation of actor-object relationships. Interestingly, the N400 was reduced when the interaction outcome was preceded either by mutual eye contact or by a perceived pointing gesture.   • The cardiotonic steroids (CTS), such as ouabain and marinobufagenin, are thought to be adrenocortical hormones secreted during exercise and the stress response. The catalytic α-subunit of Na,K-ATPase (NKA) is a CTS receptor, whose largest pool is located in skeletal muscles, indicating that muscles are a major target for CTS. Skeletal muscles contribute to adaptations to exercise by secreting interleukin-6 (IL-6) and plethora of other cytokines, which exert paracrine and endocrine effects in muscles and non-muscle tissues. Here, we determined whether ouabain, a prototypical CTS, modulates IL-6 signaling and secretion in the cultured human skeletal muscle cells. Ouabain (2.5-50 nM) suppressed the abundance of STAT3, a key transcription factor downstream of the IL-6 receptor, as well as its basal and IL-6-stimulated phosphorylation. Conversely, ouabain (50 nM) increased the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, Akt, p70S6K, and S6 ribosomal protein, indicating activation of the ERK1/2 and the Akt-mTOR pathways.   • Home artificial nutrition (HAN) is an established treatment for malnourished patients. Since July 2012, the costs for oral nutrition supplements (ONS) are covered by the compulsory health insurance providers in Switzerland if the patient has a medical indication based on the Swiss Society for Clinical Nutrition guidelines. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to analyse the development of HAN, including ONS, before and after July 2012.

    We obtained the retrospective and anonymized data from the Swiss association for joint tasks of health insurers (SVK), who registered patients on HAN. Since not all health insurers are working with SVK, this retrospective study recorded nearly 65% of all new patients on HAN in Switzerland from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2015.

    A total of 33,410 patients (49.1% men and 50.9% women) with a mean BMI of 21.3 ± 4.5 kg/m2 and mean age of 68.9 ± 17.8 years were recorded. The number of patient cases on ONS increased from 808 cases in 2010 to 18,538 cases in 2015, while paland after July 2012. Due to shorter therapy duration and reduced mean costs per patient, total costs were only doubled while the number of patients increased 7-fold.

The aim of the study was to evaluate whether VEGF-A, VEGF-C and CD34 mRNA expression along colorectal carcinogenesis steps can implement NICE (Narrow-Band Imaging International Colorectal Endoscopic) classification in the diagnosis of malignancy in colorectal polypoid lesions.

    Seventy-one subjects with colonic adenoma or cancer who underwent screening narrow-band imaging (NBI) colonoscopy were prospectively enrolled in the MICCE1 project (Treviso center). Polyps were classified according to the NICE classification. Real-time RT-PCR for VEGF-A, VEGF-C and CD34 mRNA expression was performed. Nonparametric statistics, receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis and logrectal polyps in different risk of progression classes by implementing the accuracy of the NICE classification. Studies on in vivo detection of these markers are warranted.

    Tempeh consumption has been linked to the improvement of cognitive function in older people. However, to what extent the amount of microorganism or the size of tempeh serving consumed per day influences the benefit to cognitive functions has not yet been studied.

    This experimental study involved a total of 90 respondents, who were divided into 3 groups group A (consuming 100 g of Tempeh A/day), group B (consuming 100 g of Tempeh B/day), and group C (control). Intervention was given for 6 months. Cognitive assessments were done before and after the intervention. Blood uric acid level was checked at the end of intervention to examine the effect of tempeh consumption on this. The inclusion criteria were respondents aged 60 years or over with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who agreed not to consume other fermented food during the study period. Respondents with diabetes were excluded.

    There were 84 subjects at the end of the study, majority being female (71.4%) and aged over 65 years (72.6%). An increase in global cognitive scores was found in both groups A and B. The increase in language domain scores was found only in group A.
