In this study, streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat models and high glucose (HG)-treated Human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells were established. Histological analysis, immunohistochemistry, Electrophoretic mobility shift assay, MTT assay, TUNEL assay, oxidative stress analysis, ELISA assay and western blot were used to investigate the role and underlying mechanisms of PF on healing in DFU. Our results showed that the STZ-induced diabetic rats had delayed wound healing compared with the normal rats, exhibited by intense oxidative DNA damage, low vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) expression, as well as increased apoptosis. PF treatment activated the expression of nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and improved wound healing in DFU rats. Our in vitro experiments confirmed that PF accelerated wound healing through the Nrf2 pathway under hyperglycemic conditions, with alleviated oxidative stress, increased cell proliferation and migration, decreased apoptosis, and increased the expression of VEGF and TGF-β1. Our study demonstrates the therapeutic benefits of PF in diabetic wound healing, which provides a reference for future clinical trials using PF in DFU treatment.
Based on the high incidence of thromboembolic events (TEs) observed in lung adenocarcinomas with ALK translocations and taking into account the biological proximity of ROS1 and ALK, we conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with advanced lung carcinoma carrying rearrangements in ROS1 from 23 centres in Spain and one centre in Portugal.
The main objective of the study was to analyse the incidence of TE in this population, looking for predictive risk factors, and its impact on overall survival.
A total of 58 patients were included. The incidence of TEs throughout the disease was 46.6% (n=27) with a median follow-up of 19 months (range 1-78 months) and a median overall survival of 52 months in the total population and 50 months for the patients presenting TEs, with a hazards ratio of 1.12 (95% confidence interval 0.47-2.65) p=0.78. The majority of the events were venous (n=24; 89%) and occurred in the ambulatory setting (n=18; 67%). Almost half of the patients (n=13; 48%) presented the TE in the peri-diagnostic period.
The high incidence of thrombosis, especially during the cancer diagnosis process, requires special attention from a clinician. We examined the actionable genomic alterations in ovarian cancer by analysing the nationwide registry of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data.
From March 2017 to December 2018, 16,458 patients with cancer underwent NGS testing under the interim coverage programme for NGS provided by the National Health Insurance of Korea. Among these patients, 779 patients had advanced ovarian cancer. Fifty-eight mutations were reported as pathogenic variants, which included likely pathogenic variants, and 55 theoretically actionable genes were analysed.
The prevalence of pathogenic mutations in the population was 81.5%, whereas 11.6% of the population had neither a pathogenic mutation nor a variant of unknown significance. Common pathogenic mutations shared by at least 3% of the study population were mutations in TP53 (61.5%), BRCA1 (12.2%), PIK3CA (10.4%), KRAS (10.3%), BRCA2 (9.6%)and PTEN (3.7%). BRCA1/2 pathogenic mutations were found in 14.0% (42 of 300, 95% confidence interval = 10-18%) of the patients with TP53 wild-type tumours, comprising approximately one-quarter (25.9%) of the total observed BRCA1/2 pathogen mutations. At least one pathogenic mutation in a theoretically actionable gene was found in 49.2% of patients. Among patients without a BRCA1/2 pathogenic mutation, mutations were frequently observed in KRAS (12.2%), PIK3CA (10.4%)and PTEN (4.2%). PTCH1 mutations were correlated with ATM, NF1, ERBB2 and MTOR mutations (adjusted p=0.0054, p=0.0035, p=0.0010and p=0.0003, respectively).

Bone conduction hearing devices are a well-established treatment option for conductive or mixed hearing losses as well as single-sided deafness. The Osia® 2 System is an active osseointegrated device where a surgically implanted titanium fixture supports a newly developed piezoelectric actuator that is placed under the skin.
Nationwide data collected during a controlled-market release (CMR) of the Cochlear™ Osia® 2 System as well as outcomes at single, tertiary-level private practice Otology/Neurotology center were retrospectively reviewed. Key learnings from surgeons and audiologists are discussed.
During the CMR period, 23 surgeons performed 44 operations on 43 recipients. The mean age of recipients was 44years and mean surgery duration was 52min. The most commonly used incision was postauricular but anterior to the device (78%). Five complications were observed during the CMR, none of which were device related. Twenty-one audiologists performed 33 Osia® 2 activations during the CMR. The mean age of this group was 47years, and the mean duration of each activation appointment was 55min.

Notably, recent studies suggest the existence of GM dysbiosis in COVID-19 patients. This review article highlights the interplay between the triad GM dysbiosis-immune hyperresponse-inflammation in the individual resilience/fragility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and presents the putative impact of pharmacological and nutraceutical approaches on the triumvirate, with focus on GM.Tom70 is a versatile adaptor protein of 70 kDa anchored in the outer membrane of mitochondria in metazoa, fungi and amoeba. The tertiary structure was resolved for the Tom70 of yeast, showing 26 α-helices, most of them participating in the formation of 11 tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) motifs. Tom70 serves as a docking site for cytosolic chaperone proteins and co-chaperones and is thereby involved in the uptake of newly synthesized chaperone-bound proteins in mitochondrial biogenesis. In yeast, Tom70 additionally mediates ER-mitochondria contacts via binding to sterol transporter Lam6/Ltc1. In mammalian cells, TOM70 promotes endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to mitochondria Ca2+ transfer by association with the inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate receptor type 3 (IP3R3). We retrospectively conducted this cohort study consisting of adult patients developing ESRD who initiated HD at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine from 2010 to 2019. We created a new uremic score, which was defined as the aggregate score of the following variables reflecting uremic state elevated blood urea nitrogen, β2-microglobulin, and anion gap before starting HD. The primary outcome was early mortality within 1-year after HD commencement. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for a one-point increase in uremic score was calculated with Cox proportional hazard models adjusted by baseline conditions. We included 230 participants, 16 of whom experienced the primary outcome of early mortality after HD commencement. Uremic score was significantly associated with the primary outcome (crude HR 1.91, 95% CI 1.16-3.14; adjusted HR 4.19, 95% CI 1.79-9.78). Our novel uremic score, reflecting accumulation of specific UTs, more precisely predicts early mortality after HD commencement.Ever since the discovery of vaccines, many deadly diseases have been contained worldwide, ultimately culminating in the eradication of smallpox and polio, which represented significant medical achievements in human health. In addition to the seasonal influenza viruses, the emergence and spread of avian influenza pandemic viruses such as H5N1, H7N9, H7N7, and H9N2 to humans have highlighted the urgent need to adopt a new global preparedness for an influenza pandemic. It is vital to explore new strategies for the development of effective vaccines for pandemic and seasonal influenza viruses. The new vaccine approaches should provide durable and broad protection with the capability of large-scale vaccine production within a short time. The adenoviral (Ad) vector-based vaccine platform offers a robust egg-independent production system for manufacturing large numbers of influenza vaccines inexpensively in a short timeframe. In this review, we discuss the progress in the development of Ad vector-based influenza vaccines and their potential in designing a universal influenza vaccine.The objective of this study was to develop an assessment instrument to measure the effects of a continuing education intervention on 3 domains in pharmacists' knowledge needed to provide pharmaceutical care for transgender patients (1) foundations of gender-affirming care, (2) health disparities and the specific needs of transgender patients, and (3) hormone treatments for transgender patients. Multiple-choice questions were developed, and an initial item bank of 47 items was drafted. Item bank revision was conducted by content matter experts, while feedback from 8 practicing pharmacists was provided for face validity and further insights. A preliminary test, containing 42 items was administered to 64 pharmacists before and after a three-hour continuing education intervention. Cronbach's alpha coefficient yielded a value of 0.65 as a pre-test and 0.77 as a post-test. Items were less difficult to answer by participants after taking the three-hour continuing education, showing better discrimination among high and low performers in the instrument administration as post-test, as well as better correlation when comparing participants' performance in the overall score against item-level performance. Psychometric evidence supports further instrument examination, which can improve this tool to measure gains in pharmacists' knowledge related to the care of transgender patients.The manufacturing route primarily determines the properties of materials prepared by additive manufacturing methods. In this work, the microstructural features and mechanical properties of 316 L stainless steel prepared by the selective laser method have been determined. Three types of samples, (i) selective laser melted (SLM), (ii) selective laser melted and hot isostatic pressed (HIP) and (iii) selective laser melted and heat treated (HT), were characterized. Microstructural analysis revealed that SLM samples were formed by melt pool boundaries with fine cellular-dendritic-type microstructure. This type of microstructure disappeared after HT or HIP and material were formed by larger grains and sharply defined grain boundaries. The subsequent analysis revealed that distortion type-I was associated with elevated hearing thresholds at high frequencies and reduced temporal masking release and was significantly correlated with elevated speech reception thresholds in noise. Distortion type-II was associated with low-frequency hearing loss and abnormally steep loudness functions. The auditory profiles represent four robust subpopulations of hearing-impaired listeners that exhibit different degrees of perceptual distortions. With smart speakers, there is no control over the absolute presentation level, potential errors from the automated response logging, and room acoustics. We investigate the differences between highly controlled measurements in the laboratory and smart speaker-based tests for young normal-hearing (NH) listeners as well as for elderly NH, mildly and moderately hearing-impaired listeners in low, medium, and highly reverberant room acoustics. Hemorrhage is a life-threatening complication during bronchoscopic intervention in patients with central airway obstruction (CAO) due to metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Whether pre-bronchoscopic bronchial arterial embolization (BAE) can reduce the risk of severe bleeding in CAO patients due to metastatic RCC remains unclear.
A total of 31 CAO patients due to metastatic RCC were included retrospectively and divided into a BAE group (receiving pre-bronchoscopic BAE) and non-BAE group in this study. Based on computed tomography (CT) and bronchoscopic findings, tumor debulking was used to reconstruct the airway during interventional bronchoscopy. We used the Symptom Checklist-General Severity Index (SCL-GSI) to measure the remission-rate of global psychological distress and as a dependent variable in a multilevel model to conduct univariate and multiple variate analyses. Results The research sample achieved medium symptom reduction (pre-post d = 0.65, 95% CI [0.39-0.91]) and the remission rate was about 30% after 60 sessions. These results remained stable at three-month follow-up (pre-follow-up d = 0.61, 95% CI [0.29-0.94]; 28.9%). Higher baseline scores on the SCL scale interpersonal sensitivity, the EMS defectiveness/shame and all the maladaptive schema modes together predicted improvements in global psychological distress after treatment.

We investigated the effects of luteolin (LUT) treatment on acute lung injury caused by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) induced septic rats. We also investigated the relation between LUT and the cytokines, interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). LUT was administered 1 h after CLP surgery. Administration of LUT reduced the glutathione level and superoxide dismutase activity in rat lung tissues. We also found significant reduction of malondialdehyde following LUT treatment. LUT administration also reduced TNF-α and IL-10 mRNA expression in lung tissue. Histopathologic investigation of lung tissue supported our biochemical and molecular findings. Literature regarding different superior oblique (SO) weakening procedures showed variable results. Here, we aim to evaluate the effect of a novel superior oblique tendon suture lengthening (SOSL) procedure on weakening of SO in patients with A-pattern exotropia associated with dissociated vertical deviation and SO overaction (triad exotropia).
The medical records of triad exotropia patients who underwent SOSL or SO tenotomy were reviewed. Surgical results of SOSL procedure mainly regarding the correction of A pattern, SO overaction, and fundus intorsion were analyzed and compared with those of SO tenotomy procedure.

Management of secondary glaucoma in nanophthalmos has always been challenging, especially for patients with extremely short axial length and extensive angle synechia. This case report discusses a nanophthalmic patient with secondary glaucoma and extensive angle synechia.
A 60-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) in her left eye (LE). Slitlamp examination revealed small cornea and shallow anterior chamber (AC) in both eyes. Extensive angle synechia was seen on gonioscopy, and the IOP and axial length were 36 mmHg/15.79 mm in the left eye. She was diagnosed with nanophthalmos and secondary angle-closure glaucoma LE. Laser peripheral iridectomy (LPI) was performed, but the IOP LE remained elevated and uncontrolled on brinzolamide and brimonidine. The IOP LE was then normalized with the application of 2% pilocarpine. During the follow-up period, the AC of the LE showed progressive shallowing, and 5 months post LPI the IOP became uncontrollable. Goniosynechialysis combined with phacoemulsification, lamellar sclerectomy, sclerostomy, peripheral iridectomy, capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy were performed LE. Immediately after surgery, the AC deepened and the IOP stabilized. However, the IOP rose again post-surgically at 1 week and again at 2 months. A generally shallow AC and obstructed capsule hole were present. YAG laser capsulotomy was performed, and the IOP normalized and the AC deepened. Eighteen months after surgery, the IOP LE was 12 mmHg and the AC remained stable.

Dialysis patients are typically inactive and their physical activity (PA) decreases over time. Uremic toxicity has been suggested as a potential causal factor of low PA in dialysis patients. Post-dilution high-volume online hemodiafiltration (HDF) provides greater higher molecular weight removal and studies suggest better clinical/patient-reported outcomes compared with hemodialysis (HD).
HDFIT was a randomized controlled trial at 13 clinics in Brazil that aimed to investigate the effects of HDF on measured PA (step counts) as a primary outcome. Stable HD patients (vintage 3-24 months) were randomized to receive HDF or high-flux HD. Treatment effect of HDF on the primary outcome from baseline to 3 and 6 months was estimated using a linear mixed-effects model.
We randomized 195 patients (HDF 97; HD 98) between August 2016 and October 2017. Despite the achievement of a high convective volume in the majority of sessions and a positive impact on solute removal, the treatment effect HDF on the primary outcome was +538 [95% confidence interval (CI) -330 to 1407] steps/24 h after dialysis compared with HD, and was not statistically significant. Despite a lack of statistical significance, the observed size of the treatment effect was modest and driven by steps taken between 1.5 and 24.0 h after dialysis, in particular between 20 and 24 h (+197 steps; 95%CI -95 to 488).

The purpose of this study was to examine the independent and joint associations between physical activity (PA) and sports participation on academic performance variables within a representative sample of children and adolescents.
Data were analyzed from the combined 2017-2018 National Survey of Children's Health. Household addresses were randomly selected within each US state. One household parent answered health and wellness questions pertaining to one randomly selected household child (N = 37,392; 48.1% female; 6- to 17-y old). Weighted logistic regression models were employed to examine the independent and joint associations between child PA frequency and sports participation with academic performance variables, adjusting for child- and family-level covariates.
Child PA frequency independently associated with 37% to 46% lower odds and child sports participation independently associated with 53% lower odds of reported difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions (P < .001). HDFIT was a randomized controlled trial at 13 clinics in Brazil that aimed to investigate the effects of HDF on measured PA (step counts) as a primary outcome. Stable HD patients (vintage 3-24 months) were randomized to receive HDF or high-flux HD. Treatment effect of HDF on the primary outcome from baseline to 3 and 6 months was estimated using a linear mixed-effects model. We randomized 195 patients (HDF 97; HD 98) between August 2016 and October 2017. Despite the achievement of a high convective volume in the majority of sessions and a positive impact on solute removal, the treatment effect HDF on the primary outcome was +538 [95% confidence interval (CI) -330 to 1407] steps/24 h after dialysis compared with HD, and was not statistically significant. Aortic acceleration time (AAT) and the ratio of AAT to ejection time (AAT/ET) are relatively new echocardiographic measures of the severity of aortic stenosis (AS). This study investigated the utility of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) measurements of AAT and AAT/ET to predict the severity of AS under intraoperative conditions.

Gut microorganisms are associated with atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular disease. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is associated with dyslipidemia and inflammation contributing to the progression of atherosclerosis.
Several studies have reported reduced HDL-C levels in H. pylori infected patients, but HDL cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) as the most important function of HDL has not been evaluated yet.
This cross-sectional study was conducted with 44 biopsy confirmed H. pylori patients and 43 controls. ABCA1-mediated, non-ABCA1 and total CEC were measured in ApoB-depleted serum and levels of ApoA-I, ApoB and hsCRP were estimated using ELISA technique.
Total and ABCA1 mediated-CEC were reduced in patients compared to controls, independent of age, sex, body mass index and HDL-C (p<0.001), while non-ABCA1 CEC indicated no significant change between the groups. In addition, patients showed lower serum levels of ApoA-I but increased levels of hsCRP when compared to controls. Total CEC and ABCA1-mediated CEC positively correlated with ApoA-I and HDL-C, furthermore, ABCA1-mediated CEC as well as ApoA-I inversely correlated with hsCRP.
The results of the present study indicate reduced CECs in H. pylori infected patients, especially ABCA1-mediated CEC which is associated with decreased ApoA-I and increased inflammation.

Traditional in-person fellowship interviews require great time and financial commitments. Here, we studied the response of program directors (PDs) and applicants to virtual interviews. Virtual interviews could decrease both financial and time commitments.

After the 2020 cardiothoracic fellowship match, an e-mail survey was sent to 66 program directors and 107 applicants using the Qualtrics platform.
During the 2020 cardiothoracic fellowship interview cycle, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down travel for in-person interviews. This forced a transition to virtual interviews.
Of 107 applicants emailed, 46 (44%) participated with a completion rate of 87%. sixty-six PDs were contacted and of those, 36 (55%) participated with a 92% survey completion rate.

Inflation-adjusted cancer costs in the United States have increased 40% in the last decade, leading to increasing financial burden on both payers and patients. Patients under 65 show substantial increases in utilization of expensive targeted therapy anticancer agents; however, patients aged 65+ account for the majority of new malignancies. Utilization and cost trends for these emerging agents have not been examined in detail in the Medicare population.
Retrospective prevalent cohort analysis of patients 65+ with any stage of invasive lung, breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer, receiving systemic therapy drawn from the United States Medicare 5% fee-for-service sample claims (2005-2015). Yearly trends in utilization and associated costs were modeled with adjustment for inflation, demographics, and comorbidities.
Among Medicare beneficiaries with fee-for-service and Part D enrollment who were receiving some type of systemic anticancer therapy, there were 9230 patients with colorectal, 32,738 patients witidentified from 2006 to 2015, and 19,295 patients with prostate cancer from 2009 to 2015. The share of cancer costs to Medicare attributable to targeted therapies, increased dramatically for prostate cancer (1.7% to 19.4%), lung cancer (6.7% to 19.4%), colorectal cancer (11.7% to 22.2%), and breast cancer (15.8% to 25.5%). Identification of upper airway (UA) obstruction based on pharyngeal factors is important for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) evaluation. This study is to assess the association between UA collapse characteristics and Friedman tongue position (FTP) in patients with OSA through drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE).
Retrospective study in individuals with OSA who were intolerant to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, submitted to DISE between June 1, 2013, and July 31, 2017. All subjects were classified as having an FTP grade of I to IV, and the velum, oropharynx, tongue base, epiglottis (VOTE) classification was used to analyze the DISE findings. UA collapse characteristics by DISE and FTP grading were compared between groups. The associations between specific DISE findings and FTP were analyzed.
In total, 205 patients were assessed. A positive and significant correlation was identified between the presence of retropalatal complete concentric collapse (CCC) and FTP grade, according to the following distributions I, 17.4%; II, 22.9%; III, 33.7%; and IV, 48.7% (
= 0.014). A logistic regression model revealed that CCC was associated with FTP grade IV. After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and tonsil size (TS), the grade IV individuals had a 4.4-fold higher risk of having CCC than grade I individuals (

Insomnia with objective short sleep duration (IOSSD) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity, diabetes, neurocognitive impairment, and mortality. Inflammation is believed to be one of the main links between IOSSD and these diseases. The role of nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat protein-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in inducing activation of inflammatory signaling in IOSSD is not clear. In this study, we investigated the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome in patients with IOSSD to clarify this issue.
Thirty-six patients with insomnia and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were sequentially recruited. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway collapse during sleep. The contraction of upper airway dilator muscles plays a crucial role in maintaining UA patency. Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is the most important pathophysiological process of OSA. Exposure to CIH induced not only the damage of dilator muscles but also the plasticity of the muscles. This study aimed to dynamically assess the influence of CIH on the upper airway.
The experiments were performed on 44 rats. They were randomly divided into a normoxia (NO) group (n=22) and CIH group (n=22). In each group (n=6, respectively), EMG, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) response, and critical pressure (Pcrit) value were recorded on day 0 (the day before exposure), and the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th day of air/CIH exposure. For each group, 16 rats were used for transmission electron microscopy observations on day 0, and the 7th, 14th and 28th day of air/CIH exposure (n=4 for every time point).
Compared to the NO group at the same point, the CIH group showed a damaged ultrastructure of genioglossus, increased activity of genioglossus corticomotor area, and increased Pcrit of the upper airway from the 7th to the 28th day of CIH. Increased EMG activity occurred at the 14th day of CIH and lasted for 2 weeks.

This study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal association between sleep duration and depressive symptoms among the elderly in China.
A data set from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011, 2013 and 2015 was adopted with a total of 22,847 respondents aged ≥60-years-old. A linear regression analysis with generalized estimating equations was employed to examine the longitudinal associations between duration of total sleep, nighttime sleep and daytime nap, and depressive symptoms.
An extra hour of total sleep including nighttime sleep and daytime nap was associated with lower incidence of depressive symptoms among the elderly after adjusting all confounders (OR=0.83, 95% CI 0.82-0.84). In addition, an extra hour of nighttime sleep (OR=0.82, 95% CI 0.80-0.83) or daytime nap (OR=0.93, 95% CI 0.89-0.97) was also negatively associated with depressive symptoms among the elderly. After controlling the total sleep time, an extra hour of nighttime sleep was negatively associated with depressive symptoms (OR=0.88, 95% CI 0.84 to 0.92), while an extra hour of daytime nap displayed a positive association with depressive symptoms (OR=0.88, 95% CI 0.84 to 0.92). Exposure to CIH induced not only the damage of dilator muscles but also the plasticity of the muscles. This study aimed to dynamically assess the influence of CIH on the upper airway. The experiments were performed on 44 rats. They were randomly divided into a normoxia (NO) group (n=22) and CIH group (n=22). In each group (n=6, respectively), EMG, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) response, and critical pressure (Pcrit) value were recorded on day 0 (the day before exposure), and the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th day of air/CIH exposure. For each group, 16 rats were used for transmission electron microscopy observations on day 0, and the 7th, 14th and 28th day of air/CIH exposure (n=4 for every time point). Boreal forests are adapted to cold climates and are thus especially sensitive and vulnerable to climate change. In this study, we chose 10 plots covering different topographies at the southern edge of a boreal forest. The annual ring widths of the 249 Dahurican larch (Larix gmelinii) tree cores from these plots were measured and used to calculate the basal area increment (BAI) and the interannual sensitivity (Sx). We found that forests in 10 plots showed a significant change in Sx consistently around 1980. The growth of slope forest was significantly correlated with increases in temperature and precipitation, while the wetland forests, including bogs and peatland plateaus, responded negatively to temperature. In terms of precipitation, there was no effect in the peatland plateaus, but a negative effect occurred in bogs. Based on the calculation of principle component analysis and multiple linear regression, water-soluble organic acids were mainly formed from the aerosol aging process during the sampling periods except for January, while water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) mostly originated from combustion sources. Correlation analysis was conducted between the CO-normalized concentrations of organic acids and PM2.5, O3, as well as the meteorological parameters. The results suggested that gas-phase photooxidation contributed significantly to the formation of these organic acids during the entire sampling period, and the aqueous-phase process played an important role over the severe haze event in January. Our results also suggested that the intensity of photooxidation and the aging degree of SOA were enhanced along with the reduction of PM2.5 in Beijing in recent years.This work investigates the effectiveness of the electro-Fenton reaction for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. More specific attention was given to field deployment applications in remote regions, such as the sub-Antarctic, where there is a need for low-cost technologies that can aid in remediation efforts. Naphthalene, a high priority pollutant for removal within these regions, was chosen as a model contaminant and treated with inexpensive graphite electrodes to promote the electro-Fenton pathway. Results show that naphthalene can be fully removed from a near-saturated solution, 20 mg/L, in less than 3 h of treatment. The underlying removal mechanisms were identified, and a kinetic model is presented that can accurately predict treatment outcomes at varying operating conditions of applied electric currents, 0-5 mA, and iron(II) concentrations, 0-2.0 mM. Optimal operating conditions for the electro-Fenton pathway were found to be at an applied current of 5 mA and an iron(II) concentration of 0.06 mM; this resulted in a specific energy consumption of 5.6 kWhr/kg of naphthalene removed, low enough to be operated in remote regions via sustainable energy sources.A series of ordered mesoporous FeMn bimetal oxides (OMFMs) were fabricated by using a novel inverse micelle method, and the texture, nanostructure and interface chemistry properties of OMFMs were closely correlated to the calcination temperature. Due to the amorphous regular inner-connected nanostructure and bimetallic synergistic effect, the obtained OMFMs exhibited superior arsenic sequestration performance than pure mesoporous Fe oxides (PMF) and Mn oxides (PMM). The optimum ratio of Fe/Mn and calcination temperature for arsenic removal was 3/1 and 350 °C (OMFM-3), and the maximum As(III) and As(V) adsorption capacities of OMFM-3 were 174.59 and 134.58 mg/g, respectively. Solution pH value negligibly affected the uptake of arsenic (ranged from 3.0 to 7.0), while SiO32-/PO43- ions and humic acid (HA) displayed significant inhibitory effect on arsenic removal by OMFM-3. According to the mechanism of arsenic removal, which simultaneously analyzed the arsenic redox transformation in aqueous phase and on solid phase interface, it was concluded that manganese oxides in OMFM-3 mainly played the role as a remarkable As(III) oxidant in water, whereas iron oxides dominantly acted as an excellent arsenic species adsorbent. Finally, the prominent arsenic sequestration behavior and performance in surface water suggested that OMFM-3 could be a promising and hopeful candidate for arsenic-contaminated (especially As(III)) surface water and groundwater remediation and treatment.We studied the relationships between the trace element concentration in sediments from a saline lake at a tropical latitude (Sochagota Lake, Colombia) containing hydrothermal and anthropic inputs with the organic matter content, the mineral assemblage composition and the activity of the bacterial communities of the sediments. Organic matter-poor sediments (TOC less then 0.7%) with quartz and kaolinite near the southern entrance of the lake were enriched in Zr (up to 603 mg/kg) and some major detrital elements (Na, Ti, Al and Si). Fine-sized clay-rich sediments deposited in the deep zones of the lake (central and northern segments) were characterized by substantial organic matter (up to 11.10%) and the crystallization of S-bearing minerals, clay mineral mixed layers and illite. These sediments were enriched in S, Fe, Zn, Mo, Rb, Co, K, Cr, Sb, Ni, As, Ba, Cu, Mn, Pb, P, Mg, and Sr. The presence of Fe sulfide nanoparticles enriched in heavy metals encrusting microbial cells and a dominant sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) community (Desulfatiglans, Desulfobacterales and Sva0485) suggested that the precipitation of the hydrothermal S and the accumulation of trace elements in the sediments was regulated by SRB activity.

Naphthalene, a high priority pollutant for removal within these regions, was chosen as a model contaminant and treated with inexpensive graphite electrodes to promote the electro-Fenton pathway. Results show that naphthalene can be fully removed from a near-saturated solution, 20 mg/L, in less than 3 h of treatment. The underlying removal mechanisms were identified, and a kinetic model is presented that can accurately predict treatment outcomes at varying operating conditions of applied electric currents, 0-5 mA, and iron(II) concentrations, 0-2.0 mM. Optimal operating conditions for the electro-Fenton pathway were found to be at an applied current of 5 mA and an iron(II) concentration of 0.06 mM; this resulted in a specific energy consumption of 5.6 kWhr/kg of naphthalene removed, low enough to be operated in remote regions via sustainable energy sources.A series of ordered mesoporous FeMn bimetal oxides (OMFMs) were fabricated by using a novel inverse micelle method, and the texture, nanostructure and interface chemistry properties of OMFMs were closely correlated to the calcination temperature. Due to the amorphous regular inner-connected nanostructure and bimetallic synergistic effect, the obtained OMFMs exhibited superior arsenic sequestration performance than pure mesoporous Fe oxides (PMF) and Mn oxides (PMM). The optimum ratio of Fe/Mn and calcination temperature for arsenic removal was 3/1 and 350 °C (OMFM-3), and the maximum As(III) and As(V) adsorption capacities of OMFM-3 were 174.59 and 134.58 mg/g, respectively. Solution pH value negligibly affected the uptake of arsenic (ranged from 3.0 to 7.0), while SiO32-/PO43- ions and humic acid (HA) displayed significant inhibitory effect on arsenic removal by OMFM-3. According to the mechanism of arsenic removal, which simultaneously analyzed the arsenic redox transformation in aqueous phase and on solid phase interface, it was concluded that manganese oxides in OMFM-3 mainly played the role as a remarkable As(III) oxidant in water, whereas iron oxides dominantly acted as an excellent arsenic species adsorbent. Finally, the prominent arsenic sequestration behavior and performance in surface water suggested that OMFM-3 could be a promising and hopeful candidate for arsenic-contaminated (especially As(III)) surface water and groundwater remediation and treatment.We studied the relationships between the trace element concentration in sediments from a saline lake at a tropical latitude (Sochagota Lake, Colombia) containing hydrothermal and anthropic inputs with the organic matter content, the mineral assemblage composition and the activity of the bacterial communities of the sediments. Organic matter-poor sediments (TOC less then 0.7%) with quartz and kaolinite near the southern entrance of the lake were enriched in Zr (up to 603 mg/kg) and some major detrital elements (Na, Ti, Al and Si). Fine-sized clay-rich sediments deposited in the deep zones of the lake (central and northern segments) were characterized by substantial organic matter (up to 11.10%) and the crystallization of S-bearing minerals, clay mineral mixed layers and illite. These sediments were enriched in S, Fe, Zn, Mo, Rb, Co, K, Cr, Sb, Ni, As, Ba, Cu, Mn, Pb, P, Mg, and Sr. The presence of Fe sulfide nanoparticles enriched in heavy metals encrusting microbial cells and a dominant sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) community (Desulfatiglans, Desulfobacterales and Sva0485) suggested that the precipitation of the hydrothermal S and the accumulation of trace elements in the sediments was regulated by SRB activity.0 Comments 0 Shares 9 Views 0 Reviews
