Genome of Alcanivorax sp. IO_7, an alkane degrading deep-sea bacteria isolated from hydrothermally-influenced Southwest Indian Ridge was sequenced and analysed. Genomic data mining revealed gene clusters for degrading n-alkane and cycloalkanes, including biosurfactant production. The strain was shown to grow on hexadecane as its sole carbon source, supporting the findings of genomic analysis. Presence of cyclohexanone monooxygenase among genomic islands suggest that this strain may have used gene transfer to enhance its hydrocarbon degradation ability. Comparative genome and genomic synteny analysis provided insights into the physiological features and adaptation strategies of Alcanivorax sp. Our results revealed that though compositional bias played a crucial role, translational selection and gene expression were the key determinants of codon usage variations. Analysis of relative dinucleotide abundance and codon context signatures revealed strict avoidance of TpA dinucleotide across genomes. Pregnant dams received three consecutive intraperitoneal injections of Polyinosinicpolycytidylic acid (poly(IC), 5 mg/kg) at gestational days 13, 14 and 15. Spatial working memory was assessed in young adult offspring using touchscreen operant chambers and the Trial-Unique Non-matching to Location (TUNL) task. Anxiety, novelty seeking and short-term memory were assessed using Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) and Y-maze novelty preference tasks. Fluorescent immunohistochemistry was used to assess hippocampal parvalbumin cell density, intensity and co-expression with perineuronal nets. qPCR was used to assess the expression of putatively implicated gene pathways. MIA targeting a window of parvalbumin interneuron development increased spatial working memory performance on the TUNL touchscreen task which was not influenced by anxiety or novelty seeking behaviour. Little is known about the presentation or management of patients with headache in the out-of-hospital setting. Our primary objective is to describe the out-of-hospital assessment and treatment of adults with benign headache. We also describe meaningful pain reduction stratified by commonly administered medications.
This retrospective evaluation was conducted using data from a large national cohort. We included all 911 responses by paramedics for patients 18 and older with headache. We excluded patients with trauma, fever, suspected alcohol/drug use, or who received medications suggestive of an alternate condition. We presented our findings with descriptive statistics.
Of the 5,977,612 emergency responses, 1.1% (66,235) had a provider-documented primary impression of headache or migraine and 52.5% (34,763) met inclusion criteria. An initial pain score was recorded for 73.5% (25,544) of patients, and 58.5% (14,948) of these patients had multiple pain scores documented. Of the patients with multiple pain scores documented, 53.8% (8037) of patients had an initial pain score >5. Of these, 7.1% (573) were administered any medication. Among patients receiving a single medication, Fentanyl was the most commonly administered (32.1%, 126). As a group, opioids were the most commonly administered class of drugs (38.9%, 153) and were associated with the largest proportion of clinically significant pain reduction (69.3%, 106). Dopamine antagonists were given least frequently (9.9%, 39) but had the second largest proportion of pain reduction (43.6%, 17).

Although burnout has been linked to negative workplace-level effects, prior studies have primarily focused on individuals rather than job-related characteristics. This study sought to evaluate variation in burnout between agencies and to quantify the relationship between burnout and job-related demands/resources among emergency medical services (EMS) professionals.
An electronic questionnaire was sent to all licensed, practicing EMS professionals in South Carolina. Work-related burnout was measured using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. Multivariable generalized estimating equations were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for specific job demands and resources while adjusting for confounding variables. Composite scores were used to simultaneously assess the relationship between burnout and job-related demands and resources.
Among 1271 EMS professionals working at 248 EMS agencies, the median agency-level burnout was 35% (interquartile range [IQR] 13% to 50%). Job-related demands, including time pressurgencies. Job resources, including those reflective of organizational culture, were associated with reduced burnout. Collectively, these findings suggest an opportunity to address burnout at the EMS agency level.

The primary endpoint was differential genetic features between mpMRI-visible and mpMRI-invisible tumours. Secondary endpoints were explanatory links between gene function and mpMRI conspicuity, and the prognostic value of differential gene enrichment.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate multimodal treatments consisting of surgery, radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy (CT) in metastatic anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) patients using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.
Patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of ATC between 1998 and 2015 were included. The endpoint of this study was overall survival (OS). The prognostic significance in terms of OS was analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses.

From the 234 patients in the augmentation group and 517 patients in the no-augmentation group, 200 propensity score-matched pairs were obtained. Analysis of the matched pairs revealed that the augmend are candidates for contralateral augmentation mammoplasty.
This study investigated the postoperative complications of the reconstructed breast associated with contralateral augmentation mammoplasty in patients who underwent mastectomy followed by tissue expander/implant breast reconstruction. Minimally invasive thyroidectomy (MIT) is a safe method of performing thyroidectomy with notable benefits, such as improved cosmesis and reduced postoperative pain. The objective of this retrospective study was to report our experience with the technical feasibility of MIT, and compare its early surgical outcomes with those of conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC).

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate multimodal treatments consisting of surgery, radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy (CT) in metastatic anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) patients using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of ATC between 1998 and 2015 were included. The endpoint of this study was overall survival (OS). The prognostic significance in terms of OS was analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses. A total of 433 metastatic ATC patients were identified. The median OS was two months, with a 1-year OS rate of 6.9%. Moyamoya is a rare condition characterized by cerebral angiographic findings of intracranial carotid artery stenosis with abnormal net-like vessels in the brain, and often presents as transient ischemic attacks or intracranial hemorrhage. Revascularization in the form of extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) artery bypass has demonstrated efficacy in preventing ischemic attacks and intracranial hemorrhage, although it is associated with a relatively high rate of perioperative ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This retrospective analysis aims to evaluate the possible association between postoperative hemoglobin (Hgb) concentration and early postoperative transient neurological events (TNEs) experienced at our center.
Consecutive patients undergoing EC-IC bypass between January 1, 2017 and August 31, 2019 were identified, resulting in a study population of 24 patients with 34 individual cases for different cerebral hemispheres. Postoperative Hgb level was evaluated upon arrival to the intensive care unit (ICU) and the primary outcome was the occurrence of TNEs within 24-hours after surgery.
The incidence of TNEs within 24 hours postoperatively was 12% (n=4). Statistically significant differences were demonstrated between patients who did and did not experience TNEs in the postoperative period total Hgb value (mean 9.4 vs. 11.3 g/dL, respectively; P=0.012) and percentage of patients with Hgb <10 g/dL (75% vs. 20%, respectively; P=0.048). Patients with a postoperative Hgb value <10 g/dL upon arrival to the ICU were significantly more likely to experience TNEs (odds ratio, 12; 95% confidence interval, 1.053-136.794; P=0.045).

Familiarity with these entities will ensure the inclusion of smooth muscle conditions in the differential diagnosis of thoracic soft tissue lesions and potentially guide the clinician in appropriate management. We review the clinical, imaging, and histopathologic features of thoracic smooth muscle-related conditions organized by the anatomic structures affected.
Endoscopic ear surgery (EES) has been increasingly adopted to enhance visualization during otologic surgery including pediatric cholesteatoma resection. The purpose of this study is to systematically review the current literature reporting rates of residual cholesteatoma to evaluate outcomes of EES in the pediatric population.

Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis recommendations (PRISMA), we systematically reviewed studies that reported outcomes for cholesteatoma surgery in children using the endoscope. Studies were included if they described the use of the endoscope for middle ear surgery and measured outcomes following cholesteatoma resection in pediatric patients.
Identified articles were assessed for study design, sample size, inclusion of pediatric population, the presence of a comparison group, outcomes measured such as residual disease rate, recurrent cholesteatoma, audiologic outcome, quality of life measures, and complications.
Fourteen articles in the literature discussed cholesteatoma outcomes in children when the endoscope was employed. Residual disease rate ranged from 0 to 22% when endoscope was used for dissection compared with 11 to 55% when endoscope was used for inspection or not at all. A meta-analysis was conducted on 11 studies. There was a significant risk reduction in residual disease rates for endoscopic dissection when compared with microscope (RR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.37-0.63, p < 0.001).
Among the studies included in this review, EES was associated with lower rates of residual cholesteatoma compared with traditional microscopic techniques. Additional prospective studies are needed to further assess these findings.

We used an in vitro model (upscaled by ×5) of a posterior semicircular canal with canalithiasis to study head excursion angles (0-75 degrees) and minimum waiting times in SM. Additionally, we measured actual head excursion angles performed by trained physicians during SM on a healthy subject.
Successful canalith repositioning to the utricle was possible at head excursion angles between 21 and 67 degrees. Waiting time increased from 16 to 30 seconds with increasing deviation from 45 degrees. Angles larger than 67 degrees or smaller than 21 degrees did not lead to successful repositioning even after a waiting period of 5 minutes. Physicians set head excursion angles of 50 degrees ±SD 4.8 degrees while performing the SM.
Angular deviations up to ±20 degrees from the ideal SCC plane (45 degrees) still allows for successful SM. Although the tested physicians tended to underestimate the actual head excursion angle by 5 degrees (and more), the success of SM will not be affected provided that the waiting time is sufficiently long. Wildlife tourism attractions (WTA) are popular in the United States, but they may be harmful to the individual animals involved and we question whether they provide benefits to environmental conservation. Most research on the welfare and environmental implications of WTAs focuses on charismatic mammals, with few studies investigating these issues for reptiles. Here we examine alligator wrestling, including its impact on animal welfare and environmental conservation. Using a sample of 94 relevant YouTube videos of alligator wrestling in Florida representing 16 different venues, we coded the environmental and behavioral characteristics evident in each video. We then performed a content analysis of wrestlers' narration in a subset of 51 videos to analyze the environmental awareness and educational components of alligator wrestling. Our results show systemic welfare harm 11 venues housed adult alligators together with conspecifics, 96% of alligator wrestling performances facilitated direct contact in the form of physical restraint by one or more human wrestlers, and as many as 96% of the videos did not show a suitable water or waterside features for captive alligators. Furthermore, 12% of performances showed wrestlers flipping alligators onto their backs while 16% showed wrestlers tying alligators' jaws shut, both of which are known to be acute stressors. Finally, just under half of alligator wrestling commentary (49%) addressed environmental conservation topics, and **** of this commentary included contradictory or misleading information that is not likely to benefit alligators in the wild. We argue that alligator wrestling serves no role in promoting positive relationships between humans, animals, and the environment, and instead furthers traditional notions of dominion that undermine welfare and conservation aims.Many researchers have proposed that straight men prefer women's faces displaying feminine shape characteristics at least partly because mating with such women will produce healthier offspring. Although a prediction of this adaptation-for-mate-choice hypothesis is that straight men will show stronger preferences for feminized versus masculinized versions of women's faces than will gay men, only one previous study has directly tested this prediction. Here we directly replicated that study by comparing 623 gay and 3163 straight men's preferences for feminized versus masculinized versions of faces. Consistent with the adaptation-for-mate-choice hypothesis of straight men's femininity preferences, we found that straight men showed significantly stronger preferences for feminized female faces than did gay men. Consistent with previous research suggesting that gay men place a premium on masculinity in potential romantic partners, we also found that gay men showed significantly stronger preferences for masculinized versions of male faces than did straight men. Therefore, this study aimed to strengthen the role of variables that protect from subjective distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, explore the pathways between satisfaction with life and perceived stress, and consider the role of coping strategies and defense mechanisms in this relationship. A sample of 1102 Italian participants who were experiencing the COVID-19 lockdown measures (Mage = 34.91, SD = 11.91) completed an online survey in which the Ten Item Perceived Stress Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory and Forty-Item Defense Style Questionnaire were included. The data were analyzed using Pearson's r correlations and moderation analysis. A chained-mediation model showed that the relationship between life satisfaction and perceived stress is partially mediated by approach coping, positive attitude and mature defenses. This study contributes toward gaining a better understanding of a protective pathway for mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. To test the implementation of ACP in patients with advanced cancer, we conducted a cluster-randomised trial in 23 hospitals across Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia, and United Kingdom in 2015-2018. Patients with advanced lung (stage III/IV) or colorectal (stage IV) cancer, WHO performance status 0-3, and at least 3 months life expectancy were eligible. The ACTION Respecting Choices ACP intervention as offered to patients in the intervention arm included scripted ACP conversations between patients, family members, and certified facilitators; standardised leaflets; and standardised advance directives. Control patients received care as usual. Main outcome measures were quality of life (operationalised as European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer [EORTC] emotional functioning) and symptoms.
Wildlife tourism attractions (WTA) are popular in the United States, but they may be harmful to the individual animals involved and we question whether they provide benefits to environmental conservation. Most research on the welfare and environmental implications of WTAs focuses on charismatic mammals, with few studies investigating these issues for reptiles. Here we examine alligator wrestling, including its impact on animal welfare and environmental conservation. Using a sample of 94 relevant YouTube videos of alligator wrestling in Florida representing 16 different venues, we coded the environmental and behavioral characteristics evident in each video. We then performed a content analysis of wrestlers' narration in a subset of 51 videos to analyze the environmental awareness and educational components of alligator wrestling. Our results show systemic welfare harm 11 venues housed adult alligators together with conspecifics, 96% of alligator wrestling performances facilitated direct contact in the form of physical restraint by one or more human wrestlers, and as many as 96% of the videos did not show a suitable water or waterside features for captive alligators. Furthermore, 12% of performances showed wrestlers flipping alligators onto their backs while 16% showed wrestlers tying alligators' jaws shut, both of which are known to be acute stressors. Finally, just under half of alligator wrestling commentary (49%) addressed environmental conservation topics, and much of this commentary included contradictory or misleading information that is not likely to benefit alligators in the wild. We argue that alligator wrestling serves no role in promoting positive relationships between humans, animals, and the environment, and instead furthers traditional notions of dominion that undermine welfare and conservation aims.Many researchers have proposed that straight men prefer women's faces displaying feminine shape characteristics at least partly because mating with such women will produce healthier offspring. Although a prediction of this adaptation-for-mate-choice hypothesis is that straight men will show stronger preferences for feminized versus masculinized versions of women's faces than will gay men, only one previous study has directly tested this prediction. Here we directly replicated that study by comparing 623 gay and 3163 straight men's preferences for feminized versus masculinized versions of faces. Consistent with the adaptation-for-mate-choice hypothesis of straight men's femininity preferences, we found that straight men showed significantly stronger preferences for feminized female faces than did gay men. Consistent with previous research suggesting that gay men place a premium on masculinity in potential romantic partners, we also found that gay men showed significantly stronger preferences for masculinized versions of male faces than did straight men. Together, these findings indicate the sexual orientation contributes to individual differences in men's face preferences.The coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic represents a worldwide emergency, which may have harmful consequences on people's mental health. Parallel to research focused on risk factors, it could be useful to investigate the factors that help to cope with such crises at an emotional level. Therefore, this study aimed to strengthen the role of variables that protect from subjective distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, explore the pathways between satisfaction with life and perceived stress, and consider the role of coping strategies and defense mechanisms in this relationship. A sample of 1102 Italian participants who were experiencing the COVID-19 lockdown measures (Mage = 34.91, SD = 11.91) completed an online survey in which the Ten Item Perceived Stress Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory and Forty-Item Defense Style Questionnaire were included. The data were analyzed using Pearson's r correlations and moderation analysis. A chained-mediation model showed that the relationship between life satisfaction and perceived stress is partially mediated by approach coping, positive attitude and mature defenses. This study contributes toward gaining a better understanding of a protective pathway for mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The algorithm was tested on data recorded from 15 healthy subjects during self-selected slow, normal and fast walking speeds ranging from 0.48 ± 0.19 to 1.38 ± 0.33m/s and a single subject with PD walking at their normal walking speed (1.41 ± 0.08m/s) using accelerometers on the shanks. Intra-Class Correlation (ICC) confirmed high levels of agreement between bout onset/offset times and durations estimated using the algorithm, experimentally recorded stopwatch times and manual annotation for the healthy subjects (r=0.975, p less then ; 0.001; r=0.984, p less then ; 0.001) and moderate agreement for the PD subject (r=0.663, p less then ; 0.001). Specifically, the wearable pendant sensor (WPS), a low-fidelity prototype of the proposed design, is developed and tested in comparison with a markerless optical motion capture system (Kinect) for measurement accuracy during shoulder abduction-adduction and flexion-extension exercises. It is shown that the Kendall's Tau between the measurements obtained from the WPS and Kinect devices yields a correlation coefficient ρ = 0.807 for abduction-adduction exercise and ρ = 0.783 for flexion-extension exercise with a significance level of p less then 0.001, indicating a strong correlation and high statistical significance. Following careful clinical assessment and validation, preliminary engineering design of this paper can be transformed into an Internet of Things (IoT)-based medical device to facilitate telemonitoring of TOLF therapy. We present a mobile exergaming and fitness tracking app in which the exergames are tailored toward people in wheelchairs and features a virtual community which allows social interaction through multiplayer gaming and leaderboard features. We hypothesized that users would find the multiplayer games more useful for improving fitness than the single player games. However, perceived usefulness survey results indicate overall satisfaction with the main design features but not a particular preference for the multiplayer gaming over single player gaming. Users overall found the app useful and easy to use, and the results provide indication that the virtual community created through the multiplayer feature of the mobile exergaming app does promote and enhance exercising.Clinical relevance- Multiplayer gaming was designed into a mobile fitness app to encourage exercise amongst individuals in wheelchairs. The virtual community created is expected to increase activity levels and its many associated health benefits in this community, promote a greater sense of belonging, and increase social participation.This paper presents the design and development of an exergame for the wearable inertial sensor (WIS) system for performing range of motion (ROM) exercises. The salient features of the exergame include (i) a sensor calibration user-interface (UI); (ii) a sensor mounting UI, (iii) a patient gaming UI; (iv) an instructor playback UI; and (v) an instructor exercise development UI. Along with the WIS system, the developed exergame UIs enable a user to perform ROM exercises in clinical and home-based environments. The exergame UIs can also be employed in a telerehabilitation setting for remote monitoring and assessment. Preliminary results on the efficacy of using the exergame environment is documented with (i) sensor calibration time; (ii) sensor mounting and alignment time on the human body; and (iii) examination of user adherence to instructor programmed exercise routines.

Lipid metabolism disorder and inflammatory response are considered to be the major causes of atherosclerogenesis. Astragalin, the most important functional component of flavonoid obtained from persimmon leaves, has the hypolipidemic effects. However, it is unknown, how astragalin protects against atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to observe the effects of astragalin on cholesterol efflux and inflammatory response and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that astragalin upregulated the expression of ATP-binding cassette transporters A1 and G1 (ABCA1 and ABCG1), promoted cholesterol efflux, and suppressed foam cell formation. Inhibition of the PPARγ/LXRα pathway abrogated the promotive effects of astragalin on both transporter expression and cholesterol efflux. In addition, treatment of astragalin markedly decreased the secretion of inflammatory factors, including interleukin 6, monocyte chemotactic protein 1, tumor necrosis factor α, and interleukin 1β. Mechanistically, astragali and suppressed foam cell formation. Inhibition of the PPARγ/LXRα pathway abrogated the promotive effects of astragalin on both transporter expression and cholesterol efflux. In addition, treatment of astragalin markedly decreased the secretion of inflammatory factors, including interleukin 6, monocyte chemotactic protein 1, tumor necrosis factor α, and interleukin 1β. Mechanistically, astragalin upregulated ABCA1 and ABCG1 expression, which in turn reduced TLR4 surface levels and inhibited NF-κB nuclear translocation. Consistently, astragalin reduced atherosclerotic plaque area in apoE-/- ****. Taken together, these findings suggest that astragalin protects against atherosclerosis by promoting ABCA1- and ABCG1-mediated cholesterol efflux and inhibiting proinflammatory mediator release.
Optimal medical therapy (OMT) plays a crucial role in the secondary prevention of established coronary artery disease. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is an important target of OMT. However, there is limited evidence on whether there is any difference in the combined effect of OMT according to the classes of RAS blockade [angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) vs. angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)]. Based on the nationwide National Health Insurance database in South Korea, 39,096 patients who received OMT after percutaneous coronary intervention between July 2013 and June 2017 were enrolled. Patients were stratified into either acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or angina cohort and analyzed according to the class of RAS blockade included in OMT at discharge (ACEI vs. ARB). The primary end point was all-cause mortality. The study population had a median follow-up of 2.3 years (interquartile range, 1.3-3.3 years). In the propensity score-matched AMI cohort (8219 pairs), the risk for all-cause mort9, P = 0.08). In conclusion, in this nationwide cohort study involving patients receiving OMT after percutaneous coronary intervention, ACEI-based OMT was associated with a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality in patients with AMI in comparison with ARB, but not in those with angina.
Left ventricular systolic dysfunction is the hallmark pathology in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Increasing left ventricular contractility with beta-adrenergic receptor agonists, phosphodiesterase-3 inhibitors, or levosimendan has failed to improve clinical outcomes and, in some situations, increased the risk of sudden cardiac death. Beta-adrenergic receptor agonists and phosphodiesterase-3 inhibitors retain an important role in advanced heart failure. Thus, there remains an unmet need for safe and effective therapies to improve left ventricular systolic function. Two novel cardiac myotropes, omecamtiv mecarbil and danicamtiv, target cardiac myosin to increase left ventricular systolic performance. Neither omecamtiv mecarbil nor danicamtiv affects cardiomyocyte calcium handling, the proposed mechanism underlying the life-threatening arrhythmias associated with cardiac calcitropes and calcium sensitizers. However, there is limited evidence on whether there is any difference in the combined effect of OMT according to the classes of RAS blockade [angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) vs. angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)]. Based on the nationwide National Health Insurance database in South Korea, 39,096 patients who received OMT after percutaneous coronary intervention between July 2013 and June 2017 were enrolled. Patients were stratified into either acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or angina cohort and analyzed according to the class of RAS blockade included in OMT at discharge (ACEI vs. ARB). The objectives of the workshop were to discuss the current situation and to formulate actionable strategies to improve surveillance and control of T&TBDs in Africa. The workshop was funded by the National Research Foundation and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and attended by livestock health providers, farmers, and researchers from East, West, and Southern African countries. During the workshop, experts presented recent surveillance data focused on T&TBDs; participants discussed research opportunities and community engagement. The primary outcome of the workshop was the creation of a new research consortium known as The African Consortium for T&TBDs. The consortium is intended to function as a community for researchers, students, farmers, policymakers, extension workers, and community members who are interested in the advancement of T&TBD control. The consortium will engage in research activities that focus on comprehensive surveillance of T&TBDs, developing tick acaricide resistance, alternative tick control programs, and policy development and education. These areas were identified as top priorities to be developed to improve T&TBD control on the continent.
Weaning pigs normally suffer from many stressors which have impaired growth performance and immunity. Hydrolyzed yeast has been proposed as an alternative feed additive. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various levels of hydrolyzed yeast (HY) supplementation in the feed of weaning pigs on growth performance, diarrhea incidence, immunity, antioxidant capacity, and microbial populations.
A total of 144 crossbred weaning pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) with a mean body weight (BW) of 7.46 kg were randomly assigned to one of four treatments during a 5-week feeding trial. Treatments consisted of a basal diet without HY inclusion (control), or the basal diet supplemented with HY at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g/kg of diet, respectively.
Piglets fed with 1.0 or 1.5 g/kg HY presented significantly increased BW (p=0.009) and decreased incidence of diarrhea (p=0.001). While recognition of the comorbid conditions of pediatric epilepsies is increasing, there has been a lag in the development of effective therapies partly out of concern that drugs used to treat the comorbid conditions could increase seizure susceptibility. There is now some evidence that most drugs used for comorbid conditions are safe and do not lower seizure threshold. Unfortunately, the evidence showing drugs are effective in treating many of the childhood comorbidities of epilepsy is quite limited. There is a great need for randomized, placebo-controlled drug trials for efficacy and safety in the treatment of comorbidities of childhood epilepsy.

Patients who then access rehabilitation usually maintain their drug treatments long term, with a potential influence on the rehabilitation course. Whereas drug effects have been reported for specific drugs and clinical issues in adults, comprehensive data on pediatric patients with traumatic and non-traumatic injuries are scant.
The aims of this study were to describe the therapeutic classes and groups of drugs prescribed to pediatric inpatients recovering from severe acquired brain injury when they enter rehabilitation; to assess whether clinical variables may determine the use of drug classes; and to assess whether the use of drug classes may be associated with differences in rehabilitation outcomes.

This study identifies the correct sonoanatomic landmarks as the maxilla and the coronoid process of the mandible which suggests that the block needle tip and local anesthetic injection are within the infratemporal fossa as opposed to the previously reported pterygopalatine fossa.

While the SNPs included on the ISAG panel are segregating in European Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds, their applicability in South African (SA) Sanga cattle has never been evaluated. This study, therefore, assessed the usefulness of the ISAG panel in SA Bonsmara (BON) and Drakensberger (DRB) cattle. Genotypes of 185 ISAG SNPs from 64 BON and 97 DRB sire-offspring pairs were available, all of which were validated with 119,375 SNPs. Of the 185 ISAG SNPs, 14 and 18 in the BON and DRB, respectively (9 in common to both breeds), were either monomorphic, exhibited at least one discordance between validated sire-offspring pairs, or had poor call rate or clustering issue. The mean minor allele frequency of the 185 ISAG SNPs was 0.331 in the BON and 0.359 in the DRB. The combined probability of parentage exclusion (PE) was the same (99.46%) for both breeds, while the probability of identity varied from 1.61 × 10-48 (BON) to 1.11 × 10-54 (DRB). Fifteen (23.4%) and 32 (33%) of the already validated sire-offspring pairs for the BON and DRB, respectively, were determined by the ISAG panel to be false-negatives based on a threshold of having at least two discordant SNPs. In comparison to sire discovery using the 119,375 SNPs, sire discovery using only the ISAG panel identified correctly 44 (out of 64 identified using the 119,375 SNPs) unique sire-offspring BON pairs and 62 (out of 97 identified using the 119,375 SNPs) unique sire-offspring DRB when all sires were masked. Five BON and three DRB offspring had > 1 sire nominated. This study demonstrated that the use of the ISAG panel may result in incorrect exclusions and multiple candidate sires for a given animal. Selection of more informative SNPs is, therefore, necessary in the pursuit of a low-cost and effective SNP panel for indigenous cattle breeds in SA.

This study identifies the correct sonoanatomic landmarks as the maxilla and the coronoid process of the mandible which suggests that the block needle tip and local anesthetic injection are within the infratemporal fossa as opposed to the previously reported pterygopalatine fossa. An improved understanding of the sonoanatomy will aid clinicians who are learning, performing and teaching the ultrasound-guided suprazygomatic approach to the maxillary nerve block.A panel of 200 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been recommended by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) for use in parentage verification of cattle. While the SNPs included on the ISAG panel are segregating in European Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds, their applicability in South African (SA) Sanga cattle has never been evaluated. This study, therefore, assessed the usefulness of the ISAG panel in SA Bonsmara (BON) and Drakensberger (DRB) cattle. Genotypes of 185 ISAG SNPs from 64 BON and 97 DRB sire-offspring pairs were available, all of which were validated with 119,375 SNPs. Of the 185 ISAG SNPs, 14 and 18 in the BON and DRB, respectively (9 in common to both breeds), were either monomorphic, exhibited at least one discordance between validated sire-offspring pairs, or had poor call rate or clustering issue. The mean minor allele frequency of the 185 ISAG SNPs was 0.331 in the BON and 0.359 in the DRB. The combined probability of parentage exclusion (PE) was the same (99.46%) for both breeds, while the probability of identity varied from 1.61 × 10-48 (BON) to 1.11 × 10-54 (DRB). Fifteen (23.4%) and 32 (33%) of the already validated sire-offspring pairs for the BON and DRB, respectively, were determined by the ISAG panel to be false-negatives based on a threshold of having at least two discordant SNPs. In comparison to sire discovery using the 119,375 SNPs, sire discovery using only the ISAG panel identified correctly 44 (out of 64 identified using the 119,375 SNPs) unique sire-offspring BON pairs and 62 (out of 97 identified using the 119,375 SNPs) unique sire-offspring DRB when all sires were masked. Five BON and three DRB offspring had > 1 sire nominated. This study demonstrated that the use of the ISAG panel may result in incorrect exclusions and multiple candidate sires for a given animal.
