    Despite overall striking advances in survival of childhood liver tumors, outcomes remain poor for specific patient segments. We aimed to assess overall survival (OS) of this rare disease and evaluate the generalizability of prognostic variables included in international collaborative systems using, for the first time, harmonized clinical data from two geographically different cohorts (Greece and Moscow).

    Data for children (0-14 years) with liver tumors were retrieved from two Southern-Eastern European areas (Greece; 2001-2019 and Moscow; 2012-2019). Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed, and OS values were derived from Cox proportional models controlling for study variables.

    A total of 171 newly diagnosed cases (54.4% males) were included. The OS
    exceeded 80% in patients <5 years, reaching 85% among 133 patients with hepatoblastoma (HBL). By contrast, children with other than HBL histology, especially hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) had significantly worse prognosis (hazard ratio [HR]
    7.09, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 2.56-19.65; HR
    5.18; 95%CI 2.15-12.49). The OS
    was poorer (40%-60%) in patients with extensive local, metastatic or relapsed disease. In this study, we acquired and integrated differentially expressed genes of OSCC patients, including immune-related genes and transcription factors (TFs), from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. TF-mediated network was established to exploring the regulatory mechanisms of prognostic immune-related genes.     There is no consensus on who might be qualified to conduct ethical analysis in the field of health technology assessment (HTA). Is there a specific expertise or skill set for doing this work? The aim of this article is to (i) clarify the concept of ethics expertise and, based on this, (ii) describe and specify the characteristics of ethics expertise in HTA.

    Based on the current literature and experiences in conducting ethical analysis in HTA, a group of members of the Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) Interest Group on Ethical Issues in HTA critically analyzed the collected information during two face-to-face workshops. On the basis of the analysis, working definitions of "ethics expertise" and "core competencies" of ethics experts in HTA were developed. This paper reports the output of the workshop and subsequent revisions and discussions online among the authors.

    Expertise in a domain consists of both explicit and tacit knowledge and is acquired by formal training and social learning. There is a ubiquitous ethical expertise shared by most people in society; nevertheless, some people acquire specialist ethical expertise. To become an ethics expert in the field of HTA, one needs to acquire general knowledge about ethical issues as well as specific knowledge of the ethical domain in HTA. The core competencies of ethics experts in HTA consist of three fundamental elements knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

With the increase in demand of animal products caused by the growth in human population, the dairy industry needs to develop and implement innovative strategies which are profitable, sustainable and *** friendly. Redox balance, skeletal heath and gastrointestinal functionality are three key physiological systems that are often seen as independent entities. In this research reflection we intend to stress that the antioxidant system, bone health and the microbiome are intimately intertwined. Antioxidants are crucial for the maintenance of redox homeostasis and optimal immune function. Optimal gastrointestinal functionality is important to maintain animal performance, health and welfare. In particular, the intestinal microbiome is increasingly seen as a driver of health and disease. Vitamin D metabolism is pivotal not only for optimal skeletal health, but in light of all the extra-skeletal effect of vitamin D, it is the foundation for optimal productive life. It makes sense to ask the question 'how are redox balance and the microbiome involved in the modulation of bone health and immune function?' In other words, are bugs and bones connected in dairy cows! The existing data available in the literature suggests that this might be the case. The characterization of the interactions between redox balance, skeletal health and the microbiome, will allow the development of a multisystem biological approach to refine nutritional interventions to improve dairy cattle health, welfare and productive longevity.
    The prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in adults is rising necessitating a greater understanding of acquired diseases such as community-acquired pneumonia, which remains a leading cause of age-related mortality and morbidity in the general population. We hypothesise that the CHD population, given cardiopulmonary mechanics and altered immune function, bears a uniquely high risk for pneumonia-related hospitalisations and mortality.

    A countrywide cohort study was performed to calculate the relative risk and cumulative incidence of pneumonia hospitalisations and resultant 30-day mortality amongst the adult CHD population, matched 110 with non-CHD persons by gender, age, and adjusted for comorbidities. Cox proportional hazard regression quantified the impact of CHD severity and extracardiac defects.

Water samples, collected after ad-hoc chlorination, tested negative. Technical failures of the water tanks' status were identified. Our results suggested a waterborne outbreak. The slim straight electrode is designed to enable the placement of contacts in a lateral or medial direction to the modiolus. The electrophysiological effect of this different contact direction is so far unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of intracochlear laterally or medially directed electrode contacts on electrophysiological behaviour.

    A slim straight electrode was inserted into the cochleae of five patients, and the neural response threshold was measured in a laterally and medially directed contact position. The cochleae in five temporal bone specimens were de-capped allowing an insertional observation of the contact position (lateral versus medial) of the electrode.

    There was no difference in neural response threshold between a lateral and a medial position of the contacts. Temporal bone study indicated no intracochlear torsion of the electrode.

  • As a Rac1 guanine nucleotide exchange factor, T-cell lymphoma invasion and metastasis 2 (TIAM2) has been reported to be correlated with malignant phenotypes in several cancers, but its prognostic significance and function in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) was not investigated.

    The expression patterns of TIAM2 and patient survival were analyzed in a large cohort of 303 patients with radical surgical resection of PDAC, using immunohistochemical staining in tissue microarrays. Data mining was applied to evaluate TIAM2 expression and patient survival at the mRNA level. The function of TIAM2 in proliferation, motility and invasion of pancreactic cancer (PC) cells was also investigated.

    TIAM2 expression was significantly increased in PDAC compared with para-tumor tissues (
     < .0001). The expression of TIAM2 was associated with histopathological grade (
     = .008), tumor location (
     = .013), and pathological T stage (
     = .029). For survival, patients with high TIAM2 expression had significantly poor prognosis in some subgroups. In addition, multivariate analyses showed that the combination of TIAM2 and the pathological N stage largely enhanced the prognostic efficiency, and was found to be as an independent prognostic indicator in patients with PDAC. Data mining elucidated that TIAM2 mRNA expression level was increased in tumor tissues and correlated with patient survival. Furthermore, high TIAM2 expression was common in PC cells. Downregulation of TIAM2 suppressed cell proliferation, migration and invasion in PC.

Acute xylene exposures can negatively impact health through neurotoxicity and irritation of respiratory and dermal tissues. We quantified urinary biomarkers of xylene exposure [2-methylhippuric acid (2MHA) and a mixture of 3- and 4-methylhippuric acids (34MH)] in a representative sample of the U.S. population. Methods Spot urine obtained during the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2006 and 2011-2016 was analysed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Exclusive smokers were distinguished from non-users using a combination of self-report and serum cotinine data. Results The median 2MHA and 34MH levels were higher for exclusive smokers (100 µg/g and 748 µg/g creatinine, respectively) than for non-users (27.4 µg/g and 168 µg/g creatinine, respectively). Participants who smoked cigarettes had significantly higher 2MHA and 34MH levels (p 20 CPD was significantly associated with 201%, 398%, and 471% higher 34MH levels, respectively. The real-world condition was conducted over a 5-day period. Step count for the treadmill protocol was assessed at six different treadmill speeds (2 mph, 2.5 mph, 3 mph, 3.5 mph, 4 mph, 4.5 mph, and 5 mph). The fall detection and alert system were assessed through falling maneuvers of activities of daily living. Results In the real-world condition, Livio, Sportline, and Fitbit recorded steps within 1 SD of each other. In addition, Livio recorded the most accurate steps compared to actual physical steps taken. In the treadmill condition, Livio recorded the least number of steps across all walking paces compared to the rest of the devices. Also, Livio hearing aids detected majority of the engaged falling maneuvers. Conclusions The Livio was found to be feasible, consistent, and sensitive in detecting steps and falls. Further research of higher sample size and recruitment of individuals with hearing loss are suggested.This study cross-validates the screening module of the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (NAB-SM) with a battery of well validated neuropsychological tests (Convergent Validity Test Battery CVTB) in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) population. The purpose of this study was to pilot our educational videos with end-users (patients) to determine patients' experiences and perspectives regarding the content and clarity of videos and to better understand their potential impact on patient's health behaviour.
    This was a mixed methods evaluation, using a qualitative descriptive approach, of patients attending their first consultation with an arthroplasty surgeon for TKR. We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with patients. Three members of the research team coded data independently, implementing a thematic analysis.

    As a Rac1 guanine nucleotide exchange factor, T-cell lymphoma invasion and metastasis 2 (TIAM2) has been reported to be correlated with malignant phenotypes in several cancers, but its prognostic significance and function in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) was not investigated. The expression patterns of TIAM2 and patient survival were analyzed in a large cohort of 303 patients with radical surgical resection of PDAC, using immunohistochemical staining in tissue microarrays. Data mining was applied to evaluate TIAM2 expression and patient survival at the mRNA level. The function of TIAM2 in proliferation, motility and invasion of pancreactic cancer (PC) cells was also investigated. TIAM2 expression was significantly increased in PDAC compared with para-tumor tissues (  < .0001). The expression of TIAM2 was associated with histopathological grade (  = .008), tumor location (  = .013), and pathological T stage (  = .029). For survival, patients with high TIAM2 expression had significantly poor prognosis in some subgroups. In addition, multivariate analyses showed that the combination of TIAM2 and the pathological N stage largely enhanced the prognostic efficiency, and was found to be as an independent prognostic indicator in patients with PDAC. Data mining elucidated that TIAM2 mRNA expression level was increased in tumor tissues and correlated with patient survival. Furthermore, high TIAM2 expression was common in PC cells. Downregulation of TIAM2 suppressed cell proliferation, migration and invasion in PC. High expression of TIAM2 might be a meaningful prognostic factor for PDAC patients, and TIAM2 participates in tumor progression in PDAC. We quantified urinary biomarkers of xylene exposure [2-methylhippuric acid (2MHA) and a mixture of 3- and 4-methylhippuric acids (34MH)] in a representative sample of the U.S. population. Methods Spot urine obtained during the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2006 and 2011-2016 was analysed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Exclusive smokers were distinguished from non-users using a combination of self-report and serum cotinine data. Results The median 2MHA and 34MH levels were higher for exclusive smokers (100 µg/g and 748 µg/g creatinine, respectively) than for non-users (27.4 µg/g and 168 µg/g creatinine, respectively). However, in reviewing hundreds of studies, we find only six comprehensive examples of species adaptively evolving to urbanization. We discuss the utility and shortcomings of methods for studying urban adaptation. We then review diverse systems offering preliminary evidence for urban adaptation and outline a research program for advancing its study. Urban environments constitute diverse, interacting selective agents that test the limits of adaptation. Understanding urban adaptation therefore offers unique opportunities for addressing fundamental questions in evolutionary biology and for better conserving biodiversity in cities. However, capitalizing on these opportunities requires appropriate research methods and dissemination of accurate narratives.
    The ongoing opioid overdose crisis is driven largely by exposure to illicitly-manufactured fentanyl. Preliminary observational and experimental research suggests that cannabis could potentially play a role in reducing use of prescription opioids among individuals with chronic pain. However, there is limited data on the effects of cannabis on illicit opioid consumption, particularly fentanyl, especially among individuals on opioid agonist therapy (OAT). We sought to assess the longitudinal association between cannabis use and exposure to fentanyl among people on OAT.

    Data were drawn from two community-recruited prospective cohorts of people who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada. We used generalized linear mixed-effects modeling, adjusted by relevant confounders, to investigate the relationship between cannabis use and recent fentanyl exposure (both assessed by urine drug testing) among participants on OAT between 2016 and 2018.

    Among the 819 participants on OAT who contributed 1989 observations over the study period, fentanyl exposure was common. This paper draws on the concept of convergence and institutional theories to enhance our understanding of how multinational corporations (****) fulfil their profit maximisation agendas using capitalist principles; and the extent to which these ideologies produce human rights violations in emerging economies. Using multiple data sources from the Human Rights Watch, our study provides a comprehensive list of various human rights violations perpetrated by **** from 2002 to 2017. We verified 273 violations by 160 **** mostly from developed countries. More than 90% of our sample firms have CSR/sustainability committees, are signatories to the UN Global Compact and have reported compliance with the International Labour Organisation (ILO). This raises questions about the effectiveness of these programmes for CSR compliance. We contribute to the CSR/sustainability literature by providing new insights into the nature and location of human rights violations committed by ****.
    Various nanoparticles are currently under investigation to impart biointeractivity for dental materials. This study aimed to (1) formulate an experimental dental adhesive containing ZnO nanoparticles; (2) evaluate its chemical and mechanical properties; and (3) assess the antibacterial response against oral microcosm biofilm.

However, in reviewing hundreds of studies, we find only six comprehensive examples of species adaptively evolving to urbanization. We discuss the utility and shortcomings of methods for studying urban adaptation. We then review diverse systems offering preliminary evidence for urban adaptation and outline a research program for advancing its study. Urban environments constitute diverse, interacting selective agents that test the limits of adaptation. Understanding urban adaptation therefore offers unique opportunities for addressing fundamental questions in evolutionary biology and for better conserving biodiversity in cities. However, capitalizing on these opportunities requires appropriate research methods and dissemination of accurate narratives. The ongoing opioid overdose crisis is driven largely by exposure to illicitly-manufactured fentanyl. Preliminary observational and experimental research suggests that cannabis could potentially play a role in reducing use of prescription opioids among individuals with chronic pain. However, there is limited data on the effects of cannabis on illicit opioid consumption, particularly fentanyl, especially among individuals on opioid agonist therapy (OAT). We sought to assess the longitudinal association between cannabis use and exposure to fentanyl among people on OAT. Data were drawn from two community-recruited prospective cohorts of people who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada. We used generalized linear mixed-effects modeling, adjusted by relevant confounders, to investigate the relationship between cannabis use and recent fentanyl exposure (both assessed by urine drug testing) among participants on OAT between 2016 and 2018. Among the 819 participants on OAT who contributed 1989 observations over the study period, fentanyl exposure was common. This paper draws on the concept of convergence and institutional theories to enhance our understanding of how multinational corporations (MNCs) fulfil their profit maximisation agendas using capitalist principles; and the extent to which these ideologies produce human rights violations in emerging economies. Using multiple data sources from the Human Rights Watch, our study provides a comprehensive list of various human rights violations perpetrated by MNCs from 2002 to 2017. We verified 273 violations by 160 MNCs mostly from developed countries. More than 90% of our sample firms have CSR/sustainability committees, are signatories to the UN Global Compact and have reported compliance with the International Labour Organisation (ILO). This raises questions about the effectiveness of these programmes for CSR compliance. We contribute to the CSR/sustainability literature by providing new insights into the nature and location of human rights violations committed by MNCs. Various nanoparticles are currently under investigation to impart biointeractivity for dental materials. This study aimed to (1) formulate an experimental dental adhesive containing ZnO nanoparticles; (2) evaluate its chemical and mechanical properties; and (3) assess the antibacterial response against oral microcosm biofilm. Nanosized ZnO was chemically and morphologically evaluated. ZnO was incorporated at 0 (G ), 2.5 (G ), 5 (G ) and 7.5 (G ) wt.% in an experimental dental adhesive. The adhesives were evaluated for the degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS), and elastic modulus (E). The antibacterial activity was evaluated using a 48h-microcosm biofilm model after the formation of acquired pellicle on samples' surfaces. Colony-forming units (CFU), metabolic activity, and live/dead staining were assessed. Nanosized ZnO presented characteristic peaks of Zn-O bonds, and the particles were arranged in agglomerates. The DC ranged from 62.21 (±1.05) % for G to 46.15 (±1.23) % for G (p<0.05). G showed lower FS compared to all groups (p<0.05). Despite achieving higher E (p<0.05), G did not show differences for G regarding the FS (p>0.05). G had lower CFU/mL compared to G for mutans streptococci (p<0.05) and total microorganisms (p<0.05), besides presenting lower metabolic activity (p<0.05) and higher dead bacteria via biofilm staining. The dental adhesives' physicochemical properties were similar to commercial adhesives and in compliance with ISO recommendations. G restricted the growth of oral microcosm biofilm without impairing the physicochemical performance. Previous epidemiological studies have relied on crude estimations for air pollution exposure and/or small numbers of NHL cases. The objective of this study was to analyze this association based on air pollution modeled at the address level and NHL cases identified from the nation-wide Danish Cancer Registry. We identified 20,874 incident NHL cases diagnosed between 1989 and 2014 and randomly selected 41,749 controls matched on age and gender among the entire Danish population. We used conditional logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and adjusted for individual and neighborhood level socio-demographic variables. There was no association between exposure to PM2.5 , **, O3 , SO2 or NO2 and overall risk of NHL but several air pollutants were associated with higher risk of follicular lymphoma, but statistically insignificant, e.g. PM2.5 (OR = 1.15 per 5 μg/m3 ; 95% CI 0.98-1.34) and lower risk for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (OR = 0.92 per 5 μg/m3 ; 95% CI 0.82-1.03). The purpose of this study is to identify baseline HPV vaccination rates among military aviation trainees and whether or not the provision of educational materials at the start of aviation training would increase future HPV vaccination compliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS Approval to conduct this study was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. Our population of interest consisted of US Navy and Marine Corps student naval aviators, student naval flight officers (officers), and student enlisted air crew (enlisted) reporting for aviation related duty. A convenience sampling of officer and enlisted studently significant rate differences of 13.66% and rate ratios of 5.61 between intervention and control groups. This analysis of AHLTA data combined with survey response of 50.5% indicating a change in opinion about HPV vaccine use among those who had not yet started vaccine series suggests targeted education would be a low-cost intervention to improve HPV vaccine use rates.   • Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a life-threatening post-infectious complication occurring unpredictably weeks after mild or asymptomatic SARS-CoV2 infection in otherwise healthy children. Here, we define immune abnormalities in MIS-C compared to adult COVID-19 and pediatric/adult healthy controls using single-cell RNA sequencing, antigen receptor repertoire analysis, unbiased serum proteomics, and in vitro assays. Despite no evidence of active infection, we uncover elevated S100A-family alarmins in myeloid cells and marked enrichment of serum proteins that map to myeloid cells and pathways including cytokines, complement/coagulation, and fluid shear stress in MIS-C patients. Moreover, NK and CD8 T cell cytotoxicity genes are elevated, and plasmablasts harboring IgG1 and IgG3 are expanded. Consistently, we detect elevated binding of serum IgG from severe MIS-C patients to activated human cardiac microvascular endothelial cells in culture. Thus, we define immunopathology features of MIS-C with implications for predicting and managing this SARS-CoV2-induced critical illness in children.Although there is no universal definition for texture, the concept in various forms is nevertheless widely used and a key element of visual perception to analyze images in different fields. The present work's main idea relies on the assumption that there exist representative samples, which we refer to as references as well, i.e., "good or bad" samples that represent a given dataset investigated in a particular data analysis problem. These representative samples need to be accounted for when designing predictive models with the aim of improving their performance. In particular, based on a selected subset of texture gray-level co-occurrence matrices (GLCMs) from the training cohort, we propose new representative spatial texture features, which we incorporate into a supervised image classification pipeline. The pipeline relies on the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm along with Bayesian optimization and the Wasserstein metric from optimal mass transport (OMT) theory. The selection of the best, "good and bad," GLCM references is considered for each classification label and performed during the training phase of the SVM classifier using a Bayesian optimizer. We assume that sample fitness is defined based on closeness (in the sense of the Wasserstein metric) and high correlation (Spearman's rank sense) with other samples in the same class. Moreover, the newly defined spatial texture features consist of the Wasserstein distance between the optimally selected references and the remaining samples. We assessed the performance of the proposed classification pipeline in diagnosing the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from computed tomographic (CT) images.

    We used interview data from 6,831 U.S. adults screened for the Communities, Households and SARS/CoV-2 Epidemiology (CHASING) COVID Cohort Study in April 2020.

    In logistic regression models, the adjusted odds ratio [aOR] of hospitalization due to COVID-19 for having (versus not having) children in the home was 10.5 (95% CI5.7-19.1) among study participants living in multi-unit dwellings and 2.2 (95% CI1.2-6.5) among those living in single unit dwellings. Among participants living in multi-unit dwellings, the aOR for COVID-19 hospitalization among participants with more than 4 persons in their household (versus 1 person) was 2.5 (95% CI1.0-6.1), and 0.8 (95% CI0.15-4.1) among those living in single unit dwellings.

We built age-mixing matrices and estimated the proportional change in the SARS-CoV-2 reproduction number (R ). Respondents also reported counts of others present at locations visited and transport used, from which we evaluated change in potential exposure to airborne infection due to shared indoor space ('shared air'). Respondents in March-December 2019 (n=1704) reported a mean of 7.4 close interaction contacts and 196 shared air person-hours beyond their homes. Respondents in June-July 2020 (n=216), as the epidemic peaked locally, reported 4.1 close interaction contacts and 21 shared air person-hours outside their home, with significant declines in others' homes and public spaces. Adults aged over 50 had fewer close contacts with others over 50, but little change in contact with 15-29 year olds, reflecting ongoing contact within multigenerational households.   • Benefitting from the versatility and biocompatibility of food sourced materials, the construction of hybrid structures via their molecular interplay generates novel platforms with unexpected properties. In this work, two hydrophobic biomolecules were co-assembled into water-soluble amphiphiles at pH 7 by a facile pH-cycle approach. Wheat gluten proteins (WPs) and shellac were dissolved together at pH 12 followed by a one-step adjustment to pH 7, yielding nanospheres with a protein recovery over 90%. Structural characterization evidenced that shellac stiffened the protein backbones that were resistant against thermodynamically-favored folding. The reactions were proven to be initiated between the protein secondary structures and shellac, forming a relatively unfolded three-dimensional conformation during the acid-induced co-assembly. Silybin was employed as a hydrophobic bioactive model and was entrapped following the same procedure as the hybrid assembly, with a maximum loading of 102 mg g-1 hybrid. The bioavailability of silybin loaded in shellac-WP co-assemblies was improved as assessed by cell proliferation assays, due to the improved dispersity and cell internalization of the co-assemblies. The preparation method based on a simple pH manipulation may be applied to encapsulate various hydrophobic bioactive compounds, apart from the silybin explored in this study.Identification of snake venoms is a vital step in the treatment of fatal snakebites. The spectra display distinct SERS signatures of the snake venoms on bone-shaped gold nanoparticles made with a house recipe. These signatures correlate to selected segments of the venom proteins due to the anchoring effect of the gold-cysteine bond. The method is quick as it accomplishes in situ isolation of the structure of interest to avoid tedious purification of the samples.     We searched the PubMed, Cochrane library, Web of science and Embase databases and reference lists of eligible articles up to Feb, 2020. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of combined calcium and vitamin D on osteoporosis in postmenopausal women were included in the present study.

    Combined calcium and vitamin D significantly increased total bone mineral density (BMD) (standard mean differences (SMD) = 0.537; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.227 to 0.847), lumbar spine BMD (SMD = 0.233; 95% CI 0.073 to 0.392; P < 0.001), arms BMD (SMD = 0.464; 95% CI 0.186 to 0.741) and femoral neck BMD (SMD = 0.187; 95% CI 0.010 to 0.364). It also significantly reduced the incidence of hip fracture (RR = 0.864; 95% CI 0.763 to 0.979). Subgroup analysis showed that combined calcium and vitamin D significantly increased femoral neck BMD only when the dose of the vitamin D intake was no more than 400 IU d

The results show that during the coronavirus lockdown, 26% of parents skipped toothbrushing more often in the morning, 44% let their child snack more often, and 22% let their child drink sweetened drinks more often. In addition, parents with a high educational level skipped tooth brushing in the morning more often than parents with a low educational level. In contrast, parents with a low educational level skipped toothbrushing more often in the evening than parents with a high educational level. Normal haemostasis can be divided in several steps vasoconstriction, primary haemostasis by aggregation of thrombocytes, and secondary haemostasis by the formation of fibrin out of coagulation factors. In the case of thrombosis, a blood clot forms inside a blood vessel, causing obstruction of blood flow to the underlying tissue. Various antithrombotics are prescribed for the prevention and treatment of thrombosis. Thrombocyte aggregation inhibitors only have an effect on primary haemostasis. Vitamin K antagonists influence secondary haemostasis by lowering the production of several coagulation factors. The direct oral anticoagulants have an immediate effect on an activated coagulation factor, and are currently prescribed in large quantities [in the Netherlands].
