Notably, we identified three HAB species Prorocentrum donghaiense, Lebouridinium glaucum and Noctiluca scintillans in the site S05-1 with substantially elevated abundance, suggesting that this sampling site was experiencing a multiple-species HAB event. This study was the first attempt in applying ASV-based metabarcoding analysis in studying protist and HAB species in the ECS.
Firefighters are often exposed to terrible and dangerous scenes due to their duties, and thus have a high risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD). The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between PTSD symptoms, sleep problems, resilience and neurocognitive functioning of firefighters, and to identify the sequential mediating effects of sleep problems and resilience on the relationship between PTSD symptoms and neurocognitive functioning (especially psychomotor speed and processing speed).
Data were collected from 325 firefighters in eight fire departments in four regions of Korea. Subjects performed neurocognitive function tests and completed the following questionnaires Primary Care PTSD Screening, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-K and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-2. The correlation and dual mediation effects were analysed using SPSS 22.0 program and PROCESS macro 3.4 program.
PTSD symptoms, neurocognitive functioning, sleep problems and resilience were significantly correlated with each other. In the sequential mediation model, the relationship between PTSD and psychomotor speed/processing speed was sequentially mediated by sleep problems and resilience after adjusting for demographic variables.

In resource-constrained settings, data regarding breast cancer patients' adherence to endocrine therapy (ET) and physicians' prescribing practices is limited. This study aims to decrease this knowledge gap in a real-world clinical practice.
Premenopausal women with stage 0-III hormone-sensitive breast cancer and receiving adjuvant ET during the past 1-5 years were identified in three Mexican referral centers. Participants' self-reported ET compliance, clinicopathologic characteristics, ET-related knowledge and beliefs, experienced adverse effects, social support, and patient-physician relationships were evaluated. Physician ET prescribing practices were compared with the gold standard according to international and national guidelines to assess clinicians' adherence to standard-of-care prescription.
In total, 95/132 (72%) and 35/132 (27%) participants reported complete and acceptable adherence, respectively. Incomplete adherence was mainly attributed to forgetfulness, adverse effects, and unwillingness iderable proportion misses ≥1 doses/month, usually because of forgetfulness. Notably, only 64% receive standard-of-care ET due to suboptimal prescription of OFS. Interventions that remind patients to take their ET, refine physicians' knowledge on the importance of OFS in high-risk patients, and increase access to OFS could prove pivotal to enhance optimal ET implementation and adherence, which could translate into improved patient outcomes.

Patients with CRS underwent treatment with PUS for 10 sessions, three days a week. The outcome measures were the Smell Identification Test (SIT) and 20-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-20).
Fifteen patients (9 male, mean age 48.9±9.7 years) with disease duration of 55.13±65.4 months participated. Analyses showed olfactory dysfunction was completely resolved (Cohen's d=5.62). The SNOT-20 scores showed significant improvement of CRS symptoms after treatment (Cohen's d=1.55). Effects remained at one-month follow-up.

We present two French cases of amyloid-associated (AA) amyloidosis secondary to chronic infections. Patient 1, a 51-year-old heroin addict, was hospitalised for chest pain and anasarca. During hospitalisation, a nephrotic syndrome with an inflammatory condition was discovered along with a chronic skin ulcer on his arm. Salivary gland and kidney biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of AA amyloidosis. Renal function quickly declined and haemodialysis was initiated 6 months later. Patient 2, a 55-year-old woman, was hospitalised for obstructive pyelonephritis secondary to coraliform lithiasis. Renal insufficiency with an impure nephrotic syndrome was found. After nephrectomy due to chronic pyelonephritis and an atrophic cortex on the abdominal scan, the histology revealed AA amyloidosis. Despite treatment with ACE inhibitors and control of inflammation, the nephrotic syndrome persisted with rapid decline of the kidney function.Sarcoidosis is an autoimmune multisystem granulomatous disorder of unknown aetiology, which mainly affects the adults in the age group of 20-39 years. The disease can affect any organ in the body but mainly presents as bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, pulmonary infiltrates, cutaneous lesions, ocular manifestations and arthropathy. Lofgren's syndrome is an uncommon initial presentation of sarcoidosis which is recognised by the classical triad of acute arthritis, erythema nodosum and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy. We describe a newly diagnosed case of sarcoidosis who presented as Lofgren's syndrome. Acute sarcoid arthritis should be kept as one of the differential diagnoses for patients presenting with acute arthritis and skin lesions; and chest X-ray should be considered to rule out bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy in these patients. Early suspicion and identification of classical clinical features are essential to establish early diagnosis.Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is often preceded by a viral illness and has recurrent 'flulike' symptoms which include a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal and neurological clinical features. The condition is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis and systemic exertional intolerance syndrome. CFS has been reported following dengue among adult patients. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who developed CFS following recovery of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF). The reported child was initially managed as for DHF and was clinically asymptomatic on post-discharge day 3. He was re-admitted after 3 weeks with severe joint pains, myalgia and unbearable headache. As his symptoms persisted, he was investigated in-depth. All investigations were normal except mild elevation of liver functions. The diagnosis of CFS secondary to DHF was made by exclusion of differential diagnosis. At 1-year follow-up, patient continues to have symptoms after treatment with physiotherapy and nutrition counselling.

We aimed to investigate changes in these outcomes of diabetes as depressive symptoms aggravate.
We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 14 328 participants in the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants were classified into depressive symptom groups of none, mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe depending on their Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted in three models adjusted for expanding confounders to evaluate the associations between severity of depressive symptoms and prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of DM.
As depressive symptom severity worsened, both prevalence and awareness of DM increased regardless of models (p value for trend <0.01 in all models for prevalence d depression and DM.
The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has radically compromised healthcare for people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes. Government-imposed restrictions to contain the spread of the virus have forced people to suddenly adjust their lifestyle. This study aimed to capture the impact of the pandemic on people living with diabetes and the views of these individuals on ways in which the information, advice and support they are receiving could be improved.
An online anonymous survey was distributed across the UK during the first lockdown and initial easing. The survey comprised questions about confidence in diabetes self-management, resources used to obtain information, advice and support, and opinions on how these could be improved. Open-ended questions captured subjective experiences.
The survey was completed by 773 adults with diabetes (69.2% type 1, 28.5% type 2). There was notable variability in the impact of the pandemic on confidence in self-management, with confidence having deteriorated mosing to the COVID-19 pandemic has strained the mental health and well-being of people living with diabetes. Diabetes care teams must receive assistance to support these individuals without risking further inequalities in access to healthcare. Equipping personal networks and employers with knowledge on diabetes and skills to support self-management may reduce the burden on the National Health Service.

Propensity scores (PS) analysis was used to assess the impact of HCV infection on newly acquired diabetes. PS-matched dataset included 117 184 people. We used Fine and Gray multivariable subdistributional hazards models to assess the effect of HCV and ethnicity on diabetes while adjusting for confounders and competing risks.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, health care workers (HCWs) have been obliged to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). We assessed the impact of PPE use on HCWs' physical health and we examined factors related to a greater risk of adverse events due to PPE use.
We applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines and the Cochrane criteria. We searched PubMed, Medline, Scopus, ProQuest, CINAHL, and medRxiv from January 1, 2020 to December 27, 2020.
Our review included 14 studies with 11,746 HCWs. The estimated overall prevalence of adverse events among HCWs was 78% with a range from 42.8% to 95.1% among studies. Among others, the following factors were related to the risk of adverse events among HCWs due to PPE use obesity, diabetes mellitus, smoking, pre-existing headache, longer duration of shifts wearing PPE, increased consecutive days with PPE, and increased exposure to confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients.
The frequency of adverse events among HCWs due to PPE use is very high. Healthcare facilities should take the necessary precautions and change the working conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent adverse events associated with PPE use and minimize harm to HCWs.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, health care workers (HCWs) have been obliged to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). We assessed the impact of PPE use on HCWs' physical health and we examined factors related to a greater risk of adverse events due to PPE use. We applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines and the Cochrane criteria. We searched PubMed, Medline, Scopus, ProQuest, CINAHL, and medRxiv from January 1, 2020 to December 27, 2020. Our review included 14 studies with 11,746 HCWs. The estimated overall prevalence of adverse events among HCWs was 78% with a range from 42.8% to 95.1% among studies. Among others, the following factors were related to the risk of adverse events among HCWs due to PPE use obesity, diabetes mellitus, smoking, pre-existing headache, longer duration of shifts wearing PPE, increased consecutive days with PPE, and increased exposure to confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients. The frequency of adverse events among HCWs due to PPE use is very high. Healthcare facilities should take the necessary precautions and change the working conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent adverse events associated with PPE use and minimize harm to HCWs. At present, lots of studies have tried to apply machine learning to different electroencephalography (EEG) measures for diagnosing schizophrenia (SZ) patients. However, most EEG measures previously used are either a univariate measure or a single type of brain connectivity, which may not fully capture the abnormal brain changes of SZ patients. In this paper, event-related potentials were collected from 45 SZ patients and 30 healthy controls (HCs) during a learning task, and then a combination of partial directed coherence (PDC) effective and phase lag index (PLI) functional connectivity were used as features to train a support vector machine classifier with leave-one-out cross-validation for classification of SZ from HCs. Our results indicated that an excellent classification performance (accuracy = 95.16%, specificity = 94.44%, and sensitivity = 96.15%) was obtained when the combination of functional and effective connectivity features was used, and the corresponding optimal feature number was 15, which included 12 PDC and three PLI connectivity features. The selected effective connectivity features were mainly located between the frontal/temporal/central and visual/parietal lobes, and the selected functional connectivity features were mainly located between the frontal/temporal and visual cortexes of the right hemisphere. In addition, most of the selected effective connectivity abnormally enhanced in SZ patients compared with HCs, whereas all the selected functional connectivity features decreased in SZ patients. The above results showed that our proposed method has great potential to become a tool for the auxiliary diagnosis of SZ.This article proposes a multimode medical image fusion with CNN and supervised learning, in order to solve the problem of practical medical diagnosis. It can implement different types of multimodal medical image fusion problems in batch processing mode and can effectively overcome the problem that traditional fusion problems that can only be solved by single and single image fusion. To a certain extent, it greatly improves the fusion effect, image detail clarity, and time efficiency in a new method. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method exhibits state-of-the-art fusion performance in terms of visual quality and a variety of quantitative evaluation criteria. Its medical diagnostic background is wide.
To extract texture features from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of patients with brain tumors and use them to train a classification model for supporting an early diagnosis.
Two groups of regions (control and tumor) were selected from MRI scans of 40 patients with meningioma or glioma. These regions were analyzed to obtain texture features. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS (version 20.0), including the Shapiro-Wilk test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test, which were used to test significant differences in each feature between the tumor and healthy regions. T-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) was used to visualize the data distribution so as to avoid tumor selection bias. The Gini impurity index in random forests (RFs) was used to select the top five out of all features. Based on the five features, three classification models were built respectively with three machine learning classifiers RF, support vector machine (SVM), and **** propagation (BP) neural network.
Sixteen of the 25 features were significantly different between the tumor and healthy areas. Through the Gini impurity index in RFs, standard deviation, first-order moment, variance, third-order absolute moment, and third-order central moment were selected to build the classification model. The classification model trained using the SVM classifier achieved the best performance, with sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve of 94.04%, 92.3%, and 0.932, respectively.

Our previous studies demonstrated that that a soluble form of melanotransferrin (MTf; Uniprot P08582; also known as p97, MFI2, and CD228), a mammalian iron-transport protein, is an effective carrier for delivery of drug conjugates across the BBB into the brain and was the first BBB targeting delivery system to demonstrate therapeutic efficacy within the brain. Here, we performed a screen to identify peptides from MTf capable of traversing the BBB. Diagnosis of the liver mass is often incidental on abdominal imaging due to the frequent absence of specific symptoms. Nearly 10% of HAMLs are associated with tuberous sclerosis complex. HAML contains variable proportions of blood vessels, smooth muscle cells and adipose tissue, which renders radiological diagnosis hazardous. Cells express positivity for HMB-45 and actin, thus these tumors are integrated into the group of perivascular epithelioid cell tumors. Typically, a HAML appears on magnetic resonance imaging (or computed tomography scan) as a hypervascular solid tumor with fatty areas and with washout, and can easily be misdiagnosed as other liver tumors, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma. The therapeutic strategy is not clearly defined, but surgical resection is indicated for symptomatic patients, for tumors showing an aggressive pattern (i.e., changes in size on imaging or high proliferation activity and atypical epithelioid pattern on liver biopsy), for large (> 5 cm) biopsy-proven HAML, and if doubts remain on imaging or histology. Conservative management may be justified in other conditions, since most cases follow a benign clinical course. While dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases guide treatment in patients without signs of liver fibrosis, liver related morbidity and mortality becomes relevant for MAFLD's progressive form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and upon development of liver fibrosis. Statins should be prescribed in patients without significant fibrosis despite concomitant liver diseases but are underutilized in the real-world setting. Bariatric surgery, especially Y-Roux bypass, has been proven to be superior to conservative and/or medical treatment for weight loss and resolution of obesity-associated diseases, but comes at a low but existent risk of surgical complications, reoperations and very rarely, paradoxical progression of NASH. Once end-stage liver disease develops, obese patients benefit from liver transplantation (LT), but may be at increased risk of perioperative infectious complications. After LT, metabolic comorbidities are commonly observed, irrespective of the underlying liver disease, but MAFLD/NASH patients are at even higher risk of disease recurrence. In the present review, we intend to highlight how two potentially important contributors to the inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in IBD patients, the RAGE axis activation as well as the cross-talk with the renin-angiotensin system, are dampened by the high expression of soluble forms of both RAGE and the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2. Statins should be prescribed in patients without significant fibrosis despite concomitant liver diseases but are underutilized in the real-world setting. Bariatric surgery, especially Y-Roux bypass, has been proven to be superior to conservative and/or medical treatment for weight loss and resolution of obesity-associated diseases, but comes at a low but existent risk of surgical complications, reoperations and very rarely, paradoxical progression of NASH. Once end-stage liver disease develops, obese patients benefit from liver transplantation (LT), but may be at increased risk of perioperative infectious complications. After LT, metabolic comorbidities are commonly observed, irrespective of the underlying liver disease, but MAFLD/NASH patients are at even higher risk of disease recurrence. However, clinical data raised during pandemic suggests that IBD patients do not have an increased risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection or develop a more severe course of infection. We quantified the relative abundance of NFGs using functional gene microarray GeoChip 5.0 and determined net N transformation and N2O emission rates in a 14-day incubation experiment. The results showed that N3 and N6 treatments did not significantly affect the total relative abundance and diversity of NFGs assemblage but significantly increased the relative abundance of specific genes for the NH3 cycle (ureC, nirA, and nrfA), and nitrification (amoA) and denitrification (norB). These positive effects were related to the increase in soil organic C, NO3--N, and microbial biomass C (MBC). N9 treatment significantly decreased the relative abundance of all NFGs, and this negative impact was correlated with reduced dissolved organic C and MBC. Under the stress of Cd and Zn, the phenolic acids were mainly metabolized by phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways, supplemented by shikimate and monolignol pathways in K. obovata. Eleven phenolic acids with different abilities of scavenging free radicals were detected in the plant, including pyrogallic acid (Gal), coumaric acid (Cou), protocatechuic acid (Pro), chlorogenic acid (Chl), 4-hydroxy benzoic acid (Hyd), caffeic acid (Caf), vanillic acid (Van), ferulic acid (Fer), benzoic acid (Ben), and salicylic acid (Sal). By adding phenolic acids to the sediments, chlorogenic acid (Chl), pyrogallic acid (Gal), cinnamic acid (Cin), and coumaric acid (Cou) behave as more reactive in changing Cd or Zn into residual fractions than the others, and chlorogenic acid (Chl), pyrogallic acid (Gal), ferulic acid (Fer) and caffeic acid (Caf) have higher ability of scavenging hydroxyl radicals than the others. The moisture content and water activity of the products ranged from 5.6 to 11.5% and from 0.249 to 0.448, respectively. The maximal tannase activity was achieved at 40-60 ºC and pH 5.0-6.0 for the powders containing β-cyclodextrin and Capsul® starch, which was stable at 40 ºC and 40-60 ºC for 120 min, respectively. For all the dried products, tannase retained its activity of over 80% for 120 min at pH 5.0 and 6.0. Salts and solvents influenced the activity of the spray-dried tannase. The activity of the spray-dried tannase was maintained when preserved for 1 year at 4 ºC and 28 ºC. Spray-dried tannase reduced the content of tannins and polyphenolic compounds of leather effluent and sorghum flour and catalyzed the transesterification reaction. The spray drying process stabilized the tannase activity, highlighting the potential of dried products for biotechnological applications. © King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology 2020.Circular RNA (circRNA) has been well studied in many diseases, whereas their role in patients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remains largely unclear. Here, we investigated the therapeutic effects of dexmedetomidine (Dex) on POCD and analyzed the role of circRNA as well as the pathways that may be involved. The Morris water maze test demonstrated that POCD rats have a longer incubation period than the normal group, but the latency of POCD rats was significantly lower after Dex treatment. Moreover, HE staining showed that Dex improved hippocampal pathological changes. RNA sequencing showed 164 differentially expressed circRNAs between POCD and Dex groups; 74 were upregulated and 90 were downregulated in the Dex group. A total of 20,790 target genes for differentially expressed circRNAs were observed in RNAhybrid and Miranda databases. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses showed that the target genes of differentially expressed circRNAs are mainly focused on positive regulation of intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in response to DNA damage, negative regulation of cell adhesion mediated by integrin, and response to cytokines and other function of life activities and involved in the P53 signaling pathway and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. Furthermore, the expression of five candidate circRNAs (circ-Shank3, circ-Cdc42bpa, circ-chrx-24658, cir-chr17-3642 and circ-Sgsm1) and target genes were consistent with the RNA sequencing results, which was verified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The 16S rRNA gene sequencing and whole-genome analysis exposed that the bacterial strain DP-K7 belongs to the species Kocuria indica. The genome annotation of the strain DP-K7 through the bioinformatics tool "Prokka" showed that the genome contains 3,010,594 bp with 69.01% GC content. The genome comprises 57 contigs including 2 rRNA genes, 47 tRNA genes, and 2754 CDS. The plate and broth assay showed that the strain DP-K7 has the potential to utilize methyl red as the sole carbon source for growth. Indeed, the RP-HPLC analysis proved that the strain DP-K7 is capable of degrading methyl red. The genome BLAST against a characterized azoreductase (AzoB-Xenophilus azovorans KF46F) revealed the presence of two azoreductase-like genes (azoKi-1 and azoKi-2). The phylogenetic analysis of the primary amino acid sequence of characterized azoreductases suggested that AzoKi-1 and AzoKi-2 belong to members of the clade IV azoreductase, which are flavin-independent.

For all the dried products, tannase retained its activity of over 80% for 120 min at pH 5.0 and 6.0. Salts and solvents influenced the activity of the spray-dried tannase. The activity of the spray-dried tannase was maintained when preserved for 1 year at 4 ºC and 28 ºC. Spray-dried tannase reduced the content of tannins and polyphenolic compounds of leather effluent and sorghum flour and catalyzed the transesterification reaction. The spray drying process stabilized the tannase activity, highlighting the potential of dried products for biotechnological applications. © King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology 2020.Circular RNA (circRNA) has been well studied in many diseases, whereas their role in patients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remains largely unclear. Here, we investigated the therapeutic effects of dexmedetomidine (Dex) on POCD and analyzed the role of circRNA as well as the pathways that may be involved. The Morris water maze test demonstrated that POCD rats have a longer incubation period than the normal group, but the latency of POCD rats was significantly lower after Dex treatment. Moreover, HE staining showed that Dex improved hippocampal pathological changes. RNA sequencing showed 164 differentially expressed circRNAs between POCD and Dex groups; 74 were upregulated and 90 were downregulated in the Dex group. A total of 20,790 target genes for differentially expressed circRNAs were observed in RNAhybrid and Miranda databases. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses showed that the target genes of differentially expressed circRNAs are mainly focused on positive regulation of intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in response to DNA damage, negative regulation of cell adhesion mediated by integrin, and response to cytokines and other function of life activities and involved in the P53 signaling pathway and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. Furthermore, the expression of five candidate circRNAs (circ-Shank3, circ-Cdc42bpa, circ-chrx-24658, cir-chr17-3642 and circ-Sgsm1) and target genes were consistent with the RNA sequencing results, which was verified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The 16S rRNA gene sequencing and whole-genome analysis exposed that the bacterial strain DP-K7 belongs to the species Kocuria indica. The genome annotation of the strain DP-K7 through the bioinformatics tool "Prokka" showed that the genome contains 3,010,594 bp with 69.01% GC content. The genome comprises 57 contigs including 2 rRNA genes, 47 tRNA genes, and 2754 CDS. The plate and broth assay showed that the strain DP-K7 has the potential to utilize methyl red as the sole carbon source for growth. Indeed, the RP-HPLC analysis proved that the strain DP-K7 is capable of degrading methyl red. The genome BLAST against a characterized azoreductase (AzoB-Xenophilus azovorans KF46F) revealed the presence of two azoreductase-like genes (azoKi-1 and azoKi-2). A qualitative synthesis of outcomes was performed, and a therapeutic algorithm was developed.
Nine primary studies were identified representing 375 cases of LEP; mean age was 28.8 months (range 20-40.6 months), and mean follow-up 42.7 months (range 1 month-41 years). Female sexual dysfunction and erectile dysfunction (FSD/ED) have been linked with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), from both epidemiological data and basic research studies, but few studies have been conducted in Latin America addressing these issues and most of them do not include the young population.

Four-year mortality was higher for those with MR persistence, but not for those with MR regression after TAVR, compared with nonsignificant baseline MR (43.8% vs. 35.1% vs. 32.4%; hazard ratio [HR] 1.38; p=0.008; HR 1.02; p=0.383, respectively). New York Heart Association functional class III to IV after TAVR was more common in those with MR persistence vs. regression (14.4% vs. 3.9%; p<0.001). Accordingly, the Notch effector Hes1 was highly expressed in biliary epithelial cells of CD and PLD, and the cell proliferative activity was significantly higher in CD and PLD. The expression of the Notch ligand Delta-like 1 was significantly increased in biliary epithelial cells of CD and PLD, which may be causally associated with the nuclear overexpression of Notch1 and Hes1. Depression is a prevalent disorder that is associated with adverse health outcomes, but an understanding of its effect in colorectal surgery remains limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of history of depression among patients undergoing colectomy.
United States patients from Marketscan (2010-2017) who underwent colectomy were included and stratified by whether they had a history of depression within the past year, defined as (1) a diagnosis of depression during the index admission, (2) a diagnosis of depression during any inpatient or (3) outpatient admission within the year, and/or (4) a pharmacy claim for an antidepressant within the year. The primary outcomes were length of stay (LOS) and inpatient hospital charge. Secondary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and postoperative complications. Logistic, negative binomial, and quantile regressions were performed.
Among 88981 patients, 21878 (24.6%) had a history of depression. Comparing highest and lowest risk groups shows differences of 12.9 mm Hg in systolic-BP with significant differences in risk of hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction. GRSs are also being trialled in antihypertensive-drug responses. Drug targets identified include NPR1, for which an agonist drug is currently in clinical trials. Identification of variants at the PHACTR1 locus provided insights into regulation of EDN1 in the endothelin pathway, which is aiding the development of endothelin receptor EDNRA antagonists. Drug re-purposing opportunities, including SLC5A1 and canagliflozin (a type-2 diabetes drug), are also being identified. In this review, we present key studies from the past, highlight current avenues of research and look to the future focusing on gene discovery, epigenetics, gene-environment interactions, GRSs and drug discovery. This reliance has led to widespread population declines following reductions in the distribution of sagebrush, leading to geographic separation between populations. In this study, we used >20,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms, genotype-environment association methods, and demographic modeling to examine neutral genetic variation and local adaptation in the pygmy rabbit in Nevada and California. We identified 308 loci as outliers, many of which had functional annotations related to metabolism of plant secondary compounds. Likewise, patterns of spatial variation in outlier loci were correlated with landscape and climatic variables including proximity to streams, sagebrush cover, and precipitation. We found that populations in the Mono Basin of California probably diverged from other Great Basin populations during late Pleistocene climate oscillations, and that this region is adaptively differentiated from other regions in the southern Great Basin despite limited gene flow and low effective population size. Quercetin (Qcn), a major dietary antioxidant, has been shown to have protective effects under various pathological conditions. However, whether Qcn provides protection against Cd-stimulated testicular toxicity remains obscured. The present study was therefore aimed at investigating the ameliorative effect of Qcn supplementation on Cd-induced toxicity in the goat testis in vitro in a dose-(10, 50, and 100 μM) and time-dependent (4 and 8 h) manner. Different cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and biochemical analyses have been carried out using appropriate methods. Cytotoxicity in testicular cells induced by Cd treatment was apparently mitigated by Qcn treatment, evidenced by decreased apoptotic attributes or frequency in Qcn plus Cd-treated groups compared to the only Cd-treated groups. Qcn treatment provides substantial protection to the Cd-triggered aggression in oxidative (increased MDA levels) and total antioxidant capacity (reduced FRAP activity) in testicular tissue, indicating the anti-oxidative function of Qcn against Cd exposure.

We performed quantitative real-time PCR to examine the levels of let-7e in fifty-two non-HA PCOS patients and fifty-two controls. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to reveal the diagnostic value of let-7e in non-HA PCOS. Using an immortalized human granulosa cell line, KGN, we investigated the influence of let-7e on cell proliferation and autophagy. Our data substantiated the expression of let-7e was significantly increased in non-HA PCOS group, and associated with an increased antral follicle count. The ROC curve indicated a major separation between non-HA PCOS group and the control group. Let-7e knockdown suppressed cell proliferation and enhanced cell autophagy by activating p21 pathway. Conversely, let-7e overexpression promoted cell proliferation and inhibited cell autophagy by suppressing p21 pathway. Our results indicate that increased let-7e levels in non-HA PCOS GCs may contribute to excessive follicular activation and growth, thereby involving in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Let-7e may thus be a potential therapeutic target in non-HA PCOS.

We report the case of an eight-year-old patient who presented with developmental delay and overgrowth, followed by temporal lobe seizures that were attributed to a mesio-temporal brain tumour, and who was eventually treated with epilepsy surgery. Histopathology revealed a diffuse astrocytoma but its gross total resection surprisingly failed to control the temporal lobe seizures. Genetic testing identified a de novo pathogenic variant in the NSD1 gene, thus establishing the diagnosis of Sotos syndrome. Sotos syndrome is a rare overgrowth syndrome with an increased incidence of malignancy, including the very rare occurrence of brain tumours. Seizures are frequent in patients with Sotos syndrome, often occurring with temporal lobe semiology and ictal EEG patterns in the absence of a brain lesion, and usually responding to anti-seizure medication. Our case highlights Sotos syndrome as a rare but important pitfall in the presurgical workup of temporal lobe epilepsy that should be considered particularly in MRI-negative cases but also in the presence of a focal lesion that does not fully explain the clinical picture. Most importantly, our observations underline the value of thorough presurgical diagnostics including genetic testing, even in apparently straightforward cases of lesional epilepsy, to rule out an underlying genetic aetiology that may not be treated by surgery. Using ABC knockout mice, we provide the first evidence that ABCs are mechanistically required for viral enhancement of disease, thereby establishing that ABCs are impacted by latent gammaherpesvirus infection and provoke arthritis.Bacterial nutrition is a fundamental aspect of pathogenesis. While the host environment is in principle nutrient-rich, hosts have evolved strategies to interfere with nutrient acquisition by pathogens. In turn, pathogens have developed mechanisms to circumvent these restrictions. Changing the availability of bioavailable metal ions is a common strategy used by hosts to limit bacterial replication. Macrophages and neutrophils withhold iron, manganese, and zinc ions to starve bacteria. Alternatively, they can release manganese, zinc, and copper ions to intoxicate microorganisms. Metals are essential micronutrients and participate in catalysis, macromolecular structure, and signalling. This review summarises our current understanding of how central carbon metabolism in pathogens adapts to local fluctuations in free metal ion concentrations.
