In the present study, we determined the prevalence, genetic traits, and fitness traits of fluoroquinolone-resistant APEC isolated from chickens in Korea using a total of 286 APEC isolates collected between 2014 and 2017. The APEC isolates were highly resistant to nalidixic acid (86.0%), ampicillin (71.7%), tetracycline (69.6%), and sulfisoxazole (61.2%), and 132 (46.2%) of the isolates were resistant to both enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. These fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates showed eight mutation combinations including single- or double-point mutations in the gyrA, parC, or parE genes. The isolates with double mutations (codons 83 and 87) in gyrA and additional mutations in parC and parE showed high-level fluoroquinolone resistance (minimum inhibitory concentrations, 16-128 µg/ml). The isolates fell into four phylogenetic groups, and groups A (47/132, 35.6%) and B1 (47/132, 36.4%) were the most predominant. Nine isolates (6.8%) belonged to group B2 and included major lineages of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli, sequence type (ST) 95 (n = 3) and ST69 (n = 2). The isolates varied in their virulence-associated gene content, biofilm formation, and intramacrophage survival. Among the 76 isolates, blaCMY-2 (78.9%), blaCTXM (46.1%), blaTEM (21.1%), and blaSHV (1.3%) were detected. Among the blaCTXM-producing isolates; blaCTXM-1, blaCTXM-2, and blaCTXM-9 phylogenetic groups were detected. β-lactamase genes were detected more in chicken-derived isolates compared to other meat types (P less then 0.01). Consequently, it is increasingly important for physicians to understand how RWE data can be used alongside clinical trial data. Here, we discuss the different types of real-world observational studies, outline the benefits and limitations of RWE, and, using examples from EGFR mutation-positive non-small-cell lung cancer, outline how RWE can be used to help inform treatment decisions.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of the most recent global pandemic that has caused more than a million deaths around the world. The spike glycoprotein (S) drives the entry and fusion of this virus and is the main determinant of cell tropism. To explore S requirements for entry under BSL2 conditions, S has been pseudotyped onto vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) or retroviral particles with varied success. Several alterations to S were demonstrated to improve pseudoparticle titers, but they have not been systematically compared. In this study, we produced pseudotyped VSV particles with multiple modifications to S, including truncation, mutation, and tagging strategies. The main objective of this study was to determine which modifications of the S protein optimize cell surface expression, incorporation into pseudotyped particles, and pseudoparticle entry. Removal of the last 19 residues of the cytoplasmic tail produced a hyper-fusogenic S, while removal of 21 residues increased S surface production and VSV incorporation. Additionally, we engineered a replication-competent VSV (rVSV) virus to produce the S-D614G variant with a truncated cytoplasmic tail. While the particles can be used to assess S entry requirements, the rVSV∆G/SMet1D614G∆21 virus has a poor specific infectivity (particle to infectious titer ratio).Nanofluidics encompasses a wide range of advanced approaches to study charge and mass transport at the nanoscale. Modern technologies allow us to develop and improve artificial nanofluidic platforms that confine ions in a way similar to single-ion channels in living cells. Therefore, nanofluidic platforms show great potential to act as a test field for theoretical models. This review aims to highlight ionic Coulomb blockade (ICB)-an effect that is proposed to be the key player of ion channel selectivity, which is based upon electrostatic exclusion limiting ion transport. Thus, in this perspective, we focus on the most promising approaches that have been reported on the subject. We consider ion confinements of various dimensionalities and highlight the most recent advancements in the field. Furthermore, we concentrate on the most critical obstacles associated with these studies and suggest possible solutions to advance the field further.Genome-editing technology has emerged as a potential tool for treating incurable diseases for which few therapeutic modalities are available. In particular, discovery of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas system together with the design of single-guide RNAs (sgRNAs) has sparked medical applications of genome editing. Despite the great promise of the CRISPR/Cas system, its clinical application is limited, in large part, by the lack of adequate delivery technology. To overcome this limitation, researchers have investigated various systems, including viral and nonviral vectors, for delivery of CRISPR/Cas and sgRNA into cells. Among nonviral delivery systems that have been studied are nanovesicles based on lipids, polymers, peptides, and extracellular vesicles. These nanovesicles have been designed to increase the delivery of CRISPR/Cas and sgRNA through endosome escape or using various stimuli such as light, pH, and environmental features. This review covers the latest research trends in nonviral, nanovesicle-based delivery systems that are being applied to genome-editing technology and suggests directions for future progress.Esophageal squamous cell neoplasms (ESCNs) are the most common second primary neoplasm in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and few studies have focused on metachronous ESCNs. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of and risk factors for metachronous ESCNs and to provide a reasonable endoscopic follow-up plan for HNSCC patients. We extended our prospective cohort since October 2008 by recruiting incident HNSCC patients. All enrolled patients were interviewed to collect information on substance use (smoking, alcohol, and betel nut) and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with Lugol chromoendoscopy results for synchronous ESCNs soon after HNSCC diagnosis. Endoscopic screenings for metachronous ESCNs were performed 6 to 12 months after the previous examinations. A total of 1042 incident HNSCC patients were enrolled, but only 175 patients met all the criteria and were analyzed. A total of 20 patients had metachronous ESCNs (20/175, 11.4%). Only the initial Lugol-voiding lesion (LVL) classification significantly predicted the development of metachronous ESCNs. Patients with an LVL classification of C/D had a higher risk of developing metachronous ESCNs than those with an LVL classification of A/B (adjusted odds ratio 5.03, 95% confidence interval 1.52-16.67). The mean interval for developing metachronous ESCNs was 33 months, but the shortest interval for developing metachronous esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was 12 months. Lugol chromoendoscopy screening among incident HNSCC patients predicts the risk of developing metachronous ESCNs. A closer follow-up with an endoscopy every 6 months is recommended for those with LVL classifications of C and D.Seaweeds contain a myriad of nutrients and bioactives including proteins, carbohydrates and to a lesser extent lipids as well as small molecules including peptides, saponins, alkaloids and pigments. The present work reports the synthesis of block copolymers of ε-caprolactone (εCL) and 2-ethoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane-2-oxide (ethyl ethylene phosphate, EtOEP) with different content of EtOEP fragments, preparation of polymer films, and the results of the study of the impact of EtOEP/εCL ratio on the hydrophilicity (contact angle of wetting), hydrolytic stability, cytotoxicity, protein and cell adhesion, and cell proliferation using umbilical cord multipotent stem cells. It was found that the increase of EtOEP/εCL ratio results in increase of hydrophilicity of the polymer films with lowering of the protein and cell adhesion.

The effect of recrystallization of 99.3Sn-0.7Cu wt. % solder alloy on the allotropic transition of β to α-Sn (so-called tin pest phenomenon) was investigated. Bulk samples were prepared, and an InSb inoculator was mechanically applied to their surfaces to enhance the transition. Half of the samples were used as the reference material and the other half were annealed at 180 °C for 72 h, which caused the recrystallization of the alloy. The samples were stored at -10 and -20 °C. The β-Sn to α-Sn transition was monitored using electrical resistance measurements. The expansion and separation of the tin grains during the β-Sn to α-Sn transition process were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The recrystallization of the alloy suppressed the tin pest phenomenon considerably since it decreased the number of defects in the crystal structure where heterogeneous nucleation of β-Sn to α-Sn transition could occur. For medical devices, such properties include increased strength and fatigue life, and this determines nanostructured Ti and Ti alloys to be an excellent choice for the engineering of implants with improved design for orthopedics and dentistry. Various reported studies conducted in this field enable the fabrication of medical devices with enhanced functionality. The antimicrobial properties of nanohybrids against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, and the yeast Candida albicans were found to be concentration- and time-dependent. Blue lupin protein isolate (BLPI) and white lupin protein isolate (WLPI) were found to be quite similar in composition, although differences in the electrophoretic protein profiles were apparent. Both lupin protein isolates (LPIs) had good protein solubility (76.9% for BLPI and 69.8% for WLPI at pH 7) and foaming properties. However, a remarkable difference in heat gelation performance was observed between BLPI and WLPI. WLPI had a minimum gelling concentration of 7% protein, whereas BLPI required 23% protein in order to form a gel. WLPI also resulted in stronger gels over a range of concentrations compared to BLPI. Nutritional properties of both LPIs were similar, with no significant differences in in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD), and both had very low trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) and fermentable oligo-, di- and monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) content. The effect of recrystallization of 99.3Sn-0.7Cu wt. % solder alloy on the allotropic transition of β to α-Sn (so-called tin pest phenomenon) was investigated. Bulk samples were prepared, and an InSb inoculator was mechanically applied to their surfaces to enhance the transition. Half of the samples were used as the reference material and the other half were annealed at 180 °C for 72 h, which caused the recrystallization of the alloy. The samples were stored at -10 and -20 °C. The β-Sn to α-Sn transition was monitored using electrical resistance measurements. The expansion and separation of the tin grains during the β-Sn to α-Sn transition process were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The recrystallization of the alloy suppressed the tin pest phenomenon considerably since it decreased the number of defects in the crystal structure where heterogeneous nucleation of β-Sn to α-Sn transition could occur. The accurate classification of MTS has become an important research topic. Traditional MTS classification methods do not explicitly model the temporal difference information of time series, which is, in fact, important and reflects the dynamic evolution information. In this article, the difference-guided representation learning network (DGRL-Net) is proposed to guide the representation learning of time series by dynamic evolution information. The DGRL-Net consists of a difference-guided layer and a multiscale convolutional layer. First, in the difference-guided layer, we propose a difference gating LSTM to model the time dependency and dynamic evolution of the time series to obtain feature representations of both raw and difference series. Then, these two representations are used as two input channels of the multiscale convolutional layer to extract multiscale information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods on 18 MTS benchmark datasets and achieves competitive results on two skeleton-based action recognition datasets. Furthermore, the ablation study and visualized analysis are designed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.Many neurological diseases are characterized by gradual deterioration of brain structure and function. Such modeling neglects the progressive nature of the disease, which may result in clinically implausible classifications across visits. To avoid this issue, we propose to combine features across visits by coupling feature extraction with a novel longitudinal pooling layer and enforce consistency of the classification across visits in line with disease progression. We evaluate the proposed method on the longitudinal structural MRIs from three neuroimaging datasets Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI, N=404), a dataset composed of 274 normal controls and 329 patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), and 255 youths from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). In all three experiments our method is superior to other widely used approaches for longitudinal classification thus making a unique contribution towards more accurate tracking of the impact of conditions on the brain. Due to the paucity of publicly available data, we leverage on pan-cancer and non-cancer data to design semi-supervised settings. We make use of multi-omic data, including microRNA expressions and copy number alterations, and we provide an in-depth investigation of several supervised and semi-supervised architectures Obtained accuracy results show simpler models to perform at least as well as the deep semi-supervised approaches on our task over gene expression data. When multi-omic data types are combined together, performance of deep models shows little (if any) improvement in accuracy, indicating the need for further analysis on larger datasets of multi-omic data as and when they become available. From a biological perspective, our linear model mostly confirms known gene-subtype annotations. Conversely, deep approaches model non-linear relationships, which is reflected in a more varied and still unexplored set of representative omic features that may prove useful for breast cancer subtyping.We have proposed a new tumor sensitization and targeting (TST) framework, named in vivo computation, in our previous investigations. Our previous works are focusing on the TST for a solitary lesion, where we proposed the weak priority evolution strategy (WP-ES) to adapt to the actuating mode of the homogeneous magnetic field used in the state-of-the-art nanorobotic platforms, and some in vitro validations were performed. BACKGROUND Myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) present a significant obstacle to cancer immunotherapy because they dampen anti-tumor cytotoxic T cell responses. Previous groups, including our own, have reported on the myelo-depletive effects of certain chemotherapy agents. We have shown previously that decitabine increased tumor cell Class I and tumor antigen expression, increased ability of tumor cells to stimulate T lymphocytes, depleted tumor-induced MDSC in vivo and augmented immunotherapy of a murine mammary carcinoma. RESULTS In this study, we expand upon this observation by testing a next-generation DNA methyltransferase inhibitor (DNMTi), guadecitabine, which has increased stability in the circulation. Using the 4 T1 murine mammary carcinoma model, in BALB/cJ female ****, we found that guadecitabine significantly reduces tumor burden in a T cell-dependent manner by preventing excessive myeloid proliferation and systemic accumulation of MDSC. The remaining MDSC were shifted to an antigen-presenting phenotype. Building upon our previous publication, we show that guadecitabine enhances the therapeutic effect of adoptively transferred antigen-experienced lymphocytes to diminish tumor growth and improve overall survival. We also show guadecitabine's versatility with similar tumor reduction and augmentation of immunotherapy in the C57BL/6 J E0771 murine breast cancer model. CONCLUSIONS Guadecitabine depleted and altered MDSC, inhibited growth of two different murine mammary carcinomas in vivo, and augmented immunotherapeutic efficacy. Based on these findings, we believe the immune-modulatory effects of guadecitabine can help rescue anti-tumor immune response and contribute to the overall effectiveness of current cancer immunotherapies.A recent article in ****Genomics describes a new bioinformatics tool, HumanMycobiomeScan, to classify fungal taxa in metagenomic samples. This tool was used to characterize the gut mycobiome of hunter-gatherers and Western populations, resulting in the identification of a range of fungal species in the vast majority of samples. In the HumanMycobiomeScan pipeline, sequence reads are mapped against a reference database containing fungal genome sequences only. We argue that using reference databases comprised of a single taxonomic group leads to an unacceptably high number of false-positives due to (i) mapping to conserved genetic regions in reference genomes, and (ii) sequence contamination in the assembled reference genomes. To demonstrate this, we replaced the HumanMycobiomeScan's fungal reference database with one containing genome sequences of amphibians and reptiles and re-analysed their case study. The classification pipeline recovered all species present in the reference database, revealing turtles (Geoemydidae), bull frogs (Pyxicephalidae) and snakes (Colubridae) as the most abundant herpetological taxa in the human gut. We also re-analysed their case study using a kingdom-agnostic pipeline. However; the barrier function of the stratum corneum limits the use of the skin as an administrative route for medications. Different methods were investigated to alter the barrier function of the stratum corneum. Applying different ultrasound waves could enhance the skin's permeability. OBJECTIVE Study the effect of ultrasonic waves on the alteration of skin natural barrier function, to improve the permeability of the skin to Piroxicam using three-dimension skin (EpiDermTM) as a skin model for the investigation. METHOD The effect of ultrasound at 1 MHz and 20 kHz on the permeation of Piroxicam across the three-dimensional skin equivalent using a Franz diffusion cell, was evaluated and the concentration of Piroxicam in the receiving compartment was determined using liquid chromatography method. RESULTS The permeation of Piroxicam enhanced by 199% when therapeutic ultrasound at 1 MHz frequency was used. Significant permeation enhancement was found also upon utilizing low frequency sonophoresis at 20 kHz (427%) with no apparent damage to the membrane. CONCLUSION Sonophoresis has a positive effect on enhancing skin permeability. The enhancement level was largely dependent on the sonication factors; frequency, intensity and the length of treatment. Multiple mechanisms of action might be involved in permeation improvement of the piroxicam molecule. Those mechanisms are largely dependent on the ultrasonic conditions. We compared the efficacy of high versus standard dose of meropenem in ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). METHODS 24 out of 34 eligible patients were randomized to receive meropenem 3 g q8h (high dose group, 11 patients) or 2 g q8h (standard dose group, 13 patients) as a 3h infusion. Primary outcome was considered as clinical success that was defined as stable hemodynamic, improved sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, stable or improved PaO2/FiO2 after 7 days. A sputum culture was taken before intervention. RESULTS Clinical success rate was not significantly different between the high and standard dose group (54.5% vs. 38.5%, P= 0.431). There was a significant difference in reduction of clinical pulmonary infection score (CPIS) compared to high dose with standard group (P=0.038). Using the 4 T1 murine mammary carcinoma model, in BALB/cJ female mice, we found that guadecitabine significantly reduces tumor burden in a T cell-dependent manner by preventing excessive myeloid proliferation and systemic accumulation of MDSC. The remaining MDSC were shifted to an antigen-presenting phenotype. Building upon our previous publication, we show that guadecitabine enhances the therapeutic effect of adoptively transferred antigen-experienced lymphocytes to diminish tumor growth and improve overall survival. We also show guadecitabine's versatility with similar tumor reduction and augmentation of immunotherapy in the C57BL/6 J E0771 murine breast cancer model. CONCLUSIONS Guadecitabine depleted and altered MDSC, inhibited growth of two different murine mammary carcinomas in vivo, and augmented immunotherapeutic efficacy. Based on these findings, we believe the immune-modulatory effects of guadecitabine can help rescue anti-tumor immune response and contribute to the overall effectiveness of current cancer immunotherapies.A recent article in BMC Genomics describes a new bioinformatics tool, HumanMycobiomeScan, to classify fungal taxa in metagenomic samples. This tool was used to characterize the gut mycobiome of hunter-gatherers and Western populations, resulting in the identification of a range of fungal species in the vast majority of samples. In the HumanMycobiomeScan pipeline, sequence reads are mapped against a reference database containing fungal genome sequences only. We argue that using reference databases comprised of a single taxonomic group leads to an unacceptably high number of false-positives due to (i) mapping to conserved genetic regions in reference genomes, and (ii) sequence contamination in the assembled reference genomes. To demonstrate this, we replaced the HumanMycobiomeScan's fungal reference database with one containing genome sequences of amphibians and reptiles and re-analysed their case study. The classification pipeline recovered all species present in the reference database, revealing turtles (Geoemydidae), bull frogs (Pyxicephalidae) and snakes (Colubridae) as the most abundant herpetological taxa in the human gut. We also re-analysed their case study using a kingdom-agnostic pipeline. OBJECTIVE Study the effect of ultrasonic waves on the alteration of skin natural barrier function, to improve the permeability of the skin to Piroxicam using three-dimension skin (EpiDermTM) as a skin model for the investigation. METHOD The effect of ultrasound at 1 MHz and 20 kHz on the permeation of Piroxicam across the three-dimensional skin equivalent using a Franz diffusion cell, was evaluated and the concentration of Piroxicam in the receiving compartment was determined using liquid chromatography method. RESULTS The permeation of Piroxicam enhanced by 199% when therapeutic ultrasound at 1 MHz frequency was used. Significant permeation enhancement was found also upon utilizing low frequency sonophoresis at 20 kHz (427%) with no apparent damage to the membrane. CONCLUSION Sonophoresis has a positive effect on enhancing skin permeability. The enhancement level was largely dependent on the sonication factors; frequency, intensity and the length of treatment. Multiple mechanisms of action might be involved in permeation improvement of the piroxicam molecule. Those mechanisms are largely dependent on the ultrasonic conditions. We compared the efficacy of high versus standard dose of meropenem in ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). METHODS 24 out of 34 eligible patients were randomized to receive meropenem 3 g q8h (high dose group, 11 patients) or 2 g q8h (standard dose group, 13 patients) as a 3h infusion. Primary outcome was considered as clinical success that was defined as stable hemodynamic, improved sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, stable or improved PaO2/FiO2 after 7 days. A sputum culture was taken before intervention. RESULTS Clinical success rate was not significantly different between the high and standard dose group (54.5% vs. 38.5%, P= 0.431). This was a retrospective review of patients seen at the University of Cincinnati Sarcoidosis Clinic over a six year period. For each visit, complete blood count, liver function testing, and dosing and outcome of MTX was noted. For efficacy, we compared the outcome of therapy of a matching subgroup of patients treated with either MTX or infliximab for one year and results scored as improved, stable, or worse based on response of the target organ.
Over six years, 1606 sarcoidosis patients were seen with a total of 13,576 clinical visits. During the study period, 607 patients (38% of total) were receiving MTX and had available blood work. Moderate elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (>3 times upper limit normal) was seen in nine (1.6%) patients. White blood count of <1500 cells per cu mm was seen in one patient. At six months, over half of the 44 patients initiated on infliximab and with at least six months of follow-up were better, while only 23% of the 44 of a matched subset of MTX treated patients were better (Chi square=10.566, p=0.0143). At the 12 month assessment, the infliximab treated patients were still more likely to be better than those treated with MTX (Chi square=10.033, p=0.0183). Only 23% of those treated with MTX were worse at twelve months.

The primary aim of this study was to describe cost-drivers of the top 1% and top ≥1-5% high-cost patients with sarcoidosis. The secondary aim was to compare costs of patients with and without fatigue complaints and to compare comorbidities.
We conducted a retrospective observational cross-sectional study in 200 patients diagnosed with sarcoidosis. Hospital administrative databases were used to extract healthcare utilization on the individual patient level. Healthcare costs were categorized into nine groups.
Average total health care costs for the top 1% (n=22), top ≥1%-5% (n=88) and bottom 95% beneficiaries (n=90) were € 108.296, €53.237 and €4.817, respectively. Mean treatment time in days for the top 1%, top ≥1-5% and the random sample of the bottom 95% was 1688 days (±225), 1412 days (±367) and 775 days (±659), respectively. Mean annual costs for the top 1%, top ≥1-5% and the random sample of the bottom 95% are €51.082, €27.840 and €8.692, respectively. We identified three cost-drivers in the top 5% high-cost patients 1) expensive medication, 2) intensive care and 3) costs made at the respiratory unit. Patients with and without fatigue showed to have comparable mean costs. High-cost patients were more likely to have multiple organs involved due to sarcoidosis.
We identified expensive medication as the main cost-driver in the top 5% high-cost patients with sarcoidosis. The study findings can help to tailor interventions for improving the quality of care and reducing overall costs.

Pulmonary complications are common and a leading cause of death. Pleural effusions, however, are rare. Thoracentesis is a common procedure, performed to reveal the cause of pleural effusion or to drain it and relieve dyspnea. Although generally considered a low-risk intervention, complications of thoracentesis can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. We describe three patients with SSc and symptomatic pleural effusion who required thoracentesis. All patients deteriorated shortly after the procedure and died. We assume that patients with SSc are at high-risk to develop complications after thoracentesis, most likely due to the low compliant lungs and the low elastance of the pleura. In this population, thoracentesis should be done with high caution, while measuring the pleural pressure - invasively, or with noninvasive surrogates. Infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) leads to immune dysfunction with increased risk of developing varied infections including opportunistic infections. It may be that a change in the microbial community of HIV patients could be contributory to their development of rhinosinusitis. However, the normal sinonasal microbiome in HIV is yet to be thoroughly studied.
To determine the bacteria in the middle meatus of HIV infected adults without features of rhinosinusitis.
Middle meatal swab specimens were collected under endoscopic guidance from 141 HIV infected patients with no sign and symptoms of rhinosinusitis. Specimen were sent for microscopy and culture. 141 HIV negative individuals were used as controls.
Fourty eight point nine (48.9%) of swab specimen had bacteria isolated in the patients. Thirty-nine (56.5%) specimen yielded aerobes consisting of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcocus aureus and Streptococcus; while thirty (43.5%) specimen yielded anaerobes consisting of Bacteroid HIV negative control however there were greater number of isolates in the subjects.

A hospital-based retrospective chart review of all patients who presented with blepharoptosis from March 2015 to June 2019. Data on age, gender, affected eye, severity and aetiology of blepharoptosis was obtained.

The mean age at presentation was 27.5±24.1 years (age range 3 months to 87 years). Fifty-seven (81.4%) patients had unilateral ptosis with left eye involvement in 32 (45.7%). Congenital ptosis was seen in 15 (21.4%) of the cases while acquired ptosis was seen in 55 (78.6%). Neurogenic ptosis had the highest frequency among the mechanistic types of ptosis in 23 (32.9%) patients followed by mechanical 18 (25.7%), myogenic 16 (22.9%) and aponeurotic 13(18.5%). Aponeurotic ptosis occurred more in those older than 50years of age. The association between gender and type of ptosis was not statistically significant. Patients with neurogenic ptosis had more of severe ptosis.

Medicinal plants are used in many rural communities in Abuja for the management of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) without any scientific evidence to validate the effectiveness of such phytomedicines. The aim of this study is to investigate the anti-sickling efficacy of some medicinal plants used by rural communities in Gwagwalada, Abuja, for management of SCD.
Phytochemical screening and mineral analysis were carried out. Anti-sickling activity of the extracts was evaluated by monitoring (within 150 minutes) the percentage reduction in sickle red cells, after incubating different doses of the methanolic extracts with sickled red blood cells induced with 2% sodium metabisulphite. Parahydoxybenzoic acid (PHBA) and normal saline was used as positive and negative control respectively.
Phytochemical screening of the methanolic extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, phenols and terpenoids. Significant anti-sickling activity was observed in two, out of the four plant extracts tested. Pavetta crassipes and Ziziphus mauritiana at the high dose of 0.5mg/ml caused a significant reduction in percentage of sickle red cells from 44.0% to 15.3% (PC) and 44.9% to 20.5% (ZM) respectively at 150 minutes. This is comparable to the control sample (PHBA) where sickle red cells reduced from 43.9% to 14.6 % at 150 minutes.
The results of this study showed that methanolic extract of P. crassipes and Z. mauritiana possess anti-sickling activity. This provides a scientific basis for their use as antisickling phytomedicine and makes further research into their mechanism of action necessary.

Despite the high global burden of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), doctors' knowledge of OSA was reported to be generally poor. Data on knowledge, attitude and practice of doctors regarding OSA are scarce in Africa. The only Nigerian study providing data on this included few participants and did not assess practice. We assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of doctors regarding OSA in southern Nigeria with the aim of finding gaps in knowledge and practice.
We sent out online survey monkey self-administered structured questionnaires to the WhatsApp numbers or e-mails of 1917 eligible medical doctors. The questionnaires were used to collect data on demography of the medical doctors, their professional history and knowledge of OSA symptoms; general facts, risks factors, and treatment regarding OSA; and their attitude and practice in relation to OSA.
Data from five hundred and eighty one respondents (mean age, 39.8 ± 8.7) were analyzed. Overall mean knowledge score was 25.3±6.3 (68.6±17.2 percent). The mean knowledge score of Internists, Family Physicians, General practitioners and Surgeons were 28.2±5.0; 25.0±6.9; and 24.5±5.8 and 24.2±6.7 respectively. Only 47% and 51% of the respondents respectively affirmed that hypertension and diabetes mellitus were associated with increased risk of OSA; and 7.2% referred suspected OSA patients for polysomnography.
The level of knowledge of OSA among participating doctors was poor. Most of them had the right attitude to OSA but their practice and care of OSA patients was suboptimal. We suggest improvement in care through education and provision of diagnostic and treatment facilities.

In this study, acquired ptosis was commoner than congenital ptosis. Neurogenic ptosis was the most predominant mechanistic type and tended to be more severe while aponeurotic ptosis was more in those above 50 years of age. Medicinal plants are used in many rural communities in Abuja for the management of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) without any scientific evidence to validate the effectiveness of such phytomedicines. The aim of this study is to investigate the anti-sickling efficacy of some medicinal plants used by rural communities in Gwagwalada, Abuja, for management of SCD. Phytochemical screening and mineral analysis were carried out. Anti-sickling activity of the extracts was evaluated by monitoring (within 150 minutes) the percentage reduction in sickle red cells, after incubating different doses of the methanolic extracts with sickled red blood cells induced with 2% sodium metabisulphite. Parahydoxybenzoic acid (PHBA) and normal saline was used as positive and negative control respectively. Phytochemical screening of the methanolic extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, phenols and terpenoids. Significant anti-sickling activity was observed in two, out of the four plant extracts tested. Pavetta crassipes and Ziziphus mauritiana at the high dose of 0.5mg/ml caused a significant reduction in percentage of sickle red cells from 44.0% to 15.3% (PC) and 44.9% to 20.5% (ZM) respectively at 150 minutes. This is comparable to the control sample (PHBA) where sickle red cells reduced from 43.9% to 14.6 % at 150 minutes. The results of this study showed that methanolic extract of P. crassipes and Z. mauritiana possess anti-sickling activity. This provides a scientific basis for their use as antisickling phytomedicine and makes further research into their mechanism of action necessary. Despite the high global burden of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), doctors' knowledge of OSA was reported to be generally poor. Data on knowledge, attitude and practice of doctors regarding OSA are scarce in Africa. The only Nigerian study providing data on this included few participants and did not assess practice. We assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of doctors regarding OSA in southern Nigeria with the aim of finding gaps in knowledge and practice. We sent out online survey monkey self-administered structured questionnaires to the WhatsApp numbers or e-mails of 1917 eligible medical doctors. The questionnaires were used to collect data on demography of the medical doctors, their professional history and knowledge of OSA symptoms; general facts, risks factors, and treatment regarding OSA; and their attitude and practice in relation to OSA. Data from five hundred and eighty one respondents (mean age, 39.8 ± 8.7) were analyzed. Overall mean knowledge score was 25.3±6.3 (68.6±17.2 percent). The mean knowledge score of Internists, Family Physicians, General practitioners and Surgeons were 28.2±5.0; 25.0±6.9; and 24.5±5.8 and 24.2±6.7 respectively. Only 47% and 51% of the respondents respectively affirmed that hypertension and diabetes mellitus were associated with increased risk of OSA; and 7.2% referred suspected OSA patients for polysomnography. The level of knowledge of OSA among participating doctors was poor. Most of them had the right attitude to OSA but their practice and care of OSA patients was suboptimal. Based on these findings in patients, we hypothesize that ETAR and ETBR play dichotomous roles in oral carcinogenesis and pain, such that ETAR activation and silenced ETBR expression result in increased carcinogenesis and pain. We test a treatment strategy that targets the dichotomous functions of the two receptors by inhibiting ETAR with macitentan, an ETAR antagonist approved for treatment of pulmonary hypertension, and re-expressing the ETBR gene with adenovirus transduction, and determine the treatment effect on cancer invasion (i.e., metastasis), proliferation and pain in vitro and in vivo. Computational modeling is a tool to comprehend and further optimize FEBID-related technologies. Here we utilize a novel multiscale methodology which couples Monte Carlo simulations for radiation transport with irradiation-driven molecular dynamics for simulating IDC with atomistic resolution. Through an in depth analysis of [Formula see text] deposition on [Formula see text] and its subsequent irradiation with electrons, we provide a comprehensive description of the FEBID process and its intrinsic operation. Our analysis reveals that simulations deliver unprecedented results in modeling the FEBID process, demonstrating an excellent agreement with available experimental data of the simulated nanomaterial composition, microstructure and growth rate as a function of the primary beam parameters. The generality of the methodology provides a powerful tool to study versatile problems where IDC and multiscale phenomena play an essential role.Routing optimization is a relevant problem in many contexts. In fact, in this context, theoretical results are fully accessible only to an expert audience and ready-to-use implementations for non-experts are rarely available or insufficiently documented. In particular, in this framework, final graph acquisition is a challenging problem in-and-of-itself. Here we introduce a method to extract network topologies from dynamical equations related to routing optimization under various parameters' settings.

This paper analyzes a long-term (1991-2019) flowering period of birch in the Czech Republic. Temporal and spatial evaluation in timing of beginning and end of flowering (Fbegin and Fend) and flowering period (Fperiod) of Betula pendula were investigated in different zones of the Czech Republic. The field observations were carried out at 44 sites of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute phenological network; the detailed analysis including growing degree days (GDD) evaluation to Fbegin and Fend onsets and time of flowering were made at 9 sites in different altitudes. The trends and Pearson's correlation coefficients between Fbegin (Fend) and GDDs were calculated as well. The timing of both phenological stages showed a significant advance to earlier onsets (e.g., - 7.0 d per decade at Měděnec station) and the time of flowering shortens (e.g., - 3.8 d per decade at Rokytnice station). Nevertheless, the most marked shift was observed for mountain area in the north-western and north-eastern part of the Czech Republic. In contrast, the smallest shift was found in the southern part of the Czech Republic. The shift of the GDD values fluctuates from negative to positive values. Pearson's correlation coefficients calculated for both phenophases and period of flowering of Betula pendula showed the highest values in Fperiod (e.g., 0.846 at Modrava station) and in Fend (e.g., 0.711 at Rokytnice station) as well. Thus, our results indicate due to global warming symptoms that birch pollen allergy may appear earlier in the year but for a shorter period.Climate oscillations affect fish population dynamics, ecological processes and fisheries activities in marine ecosystems. In the western Mediterranean, several atmospheric indices associated with pressure oscillations have been identified as the main drivers of the abundance or availability of certain resources exploited by fisheries. The main aim of this study was to explore the association between the potential effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the first **** price of fresh fish at the fish market of the most representative commercial species of the fisheries in the Alboran Sea (Mediterranean Sea). We used the Pearson correlation test to investigate correlations between the atmospheric oscillation indices and the fish market price of the selected species. The results suggest that inter- and intra-annual atmospheric oscillations may have an effect on bonito (Sarda sarda), European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and catsharks (Scyliorhinus spp.) abundance and catchability in the Alboran Sea and, therefore, an impact on their fish market presence and price variability according to the law of supply and demand.The pollution levels of lakes vary in quantity and type of contaminants accumulated in their sediment and water. The second Chinese capital city will be built around Baiyangdian Lake in the near future, and thus, it is important to monitor pollution status of Baiyangdian Lake. This study mainly focused on the accumulated heavy metal concentrations in the surface sediment and in variety of fish bodies. Sediment pollution status and ecological risk were evaluated through geo-accumulation (I-geo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk ([Formula see text]), and mean probable effect concentration quotient (mPEC-Q). In addition, human health risks via fish consumption were also evaluated. Based on the results, the average sediment trace As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations were 9.53, 0.35, 56.37, 32.33, 617.05, 30.18, 19.17, and 84.24 mg/kg dry wt, respectively. Both I-geo and [Formula see text] inferred low pollution levels and low ecological risks from all assessed trace metals except Cd. Cd posed moderate to high ecological risks. Based on sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), average Ni and Cr concentrations exceeded the threshold effect concentrations (TEC), but their [Formula see text] are low as their average concentrations is below Hebei province pre-contaminations (30.8 mg/kg for Ni and 68.3 mg/kg for Cr). There is no cumulative toxicity from all the metals through mPEC-Q. Omnivorous fish accumulated statistically insignificantly higher amounts of metals than carnivorous fish, except for Hg. The intake of 12.22 g/person/day fish muscle for the entire life is safe from noncarcinogenic human health problems.Quantification of the contributions from traffic source to arable roadside soil heavy metal loadings is a challenge. The contribution depends on traffic intensity, road type and distance from the road. At a field scale (3.9 ha), 720 topsoil samples were taken. The aim of the study was to monitor and assess the impact of regional/local roads with various conditions of traffic and period of use on the distribution of Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu in the arable roadside topsoil in their vicinity. PCA indicated the occurrence of two main gradients of 11 environmental elements influencing the distribution of heavy metals in the soils of the neighbouring land. The first gradient was associated mainly with the distance from the edge of the road. The second gradient was associated with the degree of contamination of the soils and with the road type, defined by the traffic volume and period of being use. Anova reviled lack of influence of the factors for Cu contents. Unlike Cu, for Cd, Pb and Zn, the significant impact was observed for both factors and interactions between them. The concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn, regardless of the distance from the road were 0.21-0.58 mg Cd kg-1 d.m., 13.60-41.96 mg Pb kg-1 d.m. and 40.31-63.97 mg Zn kg-1 d.m.
