To determine the clinical efficacy of endoscopic transurethral incision (TUI) for boys with refractory daytime incontinence due to a posterior urethral valve with or without nocturnal enuresis.
A total of 20 boys with daytime incontinence were assessed. Twelve boys underwent TUI (TUI+ group) and eight boys continued receiving oral drugs (TUI- group). The primary endpoint was the cure rate associated with TUI or NE in both groups.
Only two boys achieved daytime continence 6 months after TUI, but no boys were cured of nocturnal enuresis 6 months after TUI. The median time to daytime continence was significantly longer in the TUI+ than in the TUI- group (52 vs 27 months, respectively; log rank P = 0.041) and the median time to dry nights was significantly longer in the TUI+ than in the TUI- group (56 vs 36 months, respectively; log rank P = 0.021).

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common clinical condition with limited treatment options. The main aim of the present systematic review was to synthesize information on Rho-kinase as a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of ED.
We performed a systematic literature study in PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus. Included studies were original articles studied the role of Rho-kinase in the pathogenesis and/or new treatment approach for ED in animal models and clinical studies, published between 2014 and 2019. Data derived from each study were study design used, interventions applied and main treatment outcomes. The quality of the selected articles was assessed by CAMARADES criteria and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
A total of 1067 original articles were retrieved in the given period and eighteen papers met our inclusion criteria. Five articles explain the role of Rho-kinase in ED pathogenesis using different models such as cavernous nerve crush injury, heart failure-induced ED, vascical and molecular dysregulation have been improved by inhibition of Rho-kinase.
Targeting Rho-kinase may be a possible target for the treatment of ED secondary to specific causes, and Rho-kinase inhibitors may be a new drug family for the treatment of ED. However, this requires further studies for in-depth understanding.

We wished to present the clinical applications and to evaluate the benefits of the use of a carbon dioxide (CO
) laser versus the conventional procedure for circumcision in adults, in terms of duration of surgery, surgical techniques, complications, pain and cosmetic appearance.
The medical records of 482 patients who had been circumcised were retrospectively evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups 168 patients (Group A) were circumcised with traditional techniques; and 314 patients (Group B) were circumcised using a CO
laser. Staged procedures could be performed, but considering the risk of persistence or worsening SUI, and no standard management strategy of SUI associated with CUD; simultaneous treatment was proposed. It is preferable to use autologous materials in such cases. However, the presence of incisional hernia protruded with its content covering the suprapubic area prohibits the retropubic sling technique due to visceral lesion risk. The diverticulum and SUI were repairs in the same surgery using a hybrid transobturator. The technique used for obtaining the fascia lata followed the literature, and a 6 cm segment was acquired. The patients were re-prepared in a lithotomy fashion, and diverticulectomy was performed. The segment of fascia lata was fixed to the mesh and sling was manipulated so that its middle part (fascia) rested directly below the urethra. After 6 months post-operatively, patients referred significant improvement in urinary symptoms. Patients have not had any storage symptoms, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form = zero, no SUI, and have not had any mesh-related complications. In conclusion, the present study evaluated a new technique for the treatment of CUD with SUI in a particular clinical scenario. Other studies with extended follow-up periods and larger sample sizes should be performed in this subset of patients.

Divorce rates and never married status were significantly higher for women (9% versus 4%; P less then 0.001 and 19% versus 4%; P less then 0.001, respectively). There were no major age-adjusted health status differences reported between male and female surgeons. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights contemporary disparities in salaries, practice, and family life between male and female trauma surgeons. Overall, trauma surgeons do not report gender-based differences in health and wellness metrics but have ongoing disparity in compensation and family life. FTR has been problematic in trauma secondary to low precedence rates (proportion of deaths preceded by complication). We sought to evaluate this in EGS, hypothesizing that precedence is lower in EGS than in similar elective operations. METHODS National Inpatient Sample data from January 2014 through September 2015 were used. 150,027 adult operative EGS complete cases were defined by emergent admission, one of seven International Classification of Diseases, ninth revision (ICD-9) procedure group codes for common EGS operations, and timing to operation ( less then 48 h); these represent 750,135 patients under the National Inpatient Sample sampling design. Deaths were precedented if one of eight prespecified complications was identified. Chi-squared tests were used to compare precedence rates between selected emergent and elective operations. RESULTS There was a 2.5% mortality rate in this cohort of operative EGS patients, with an 84.1% (95% CI 82.7%-85.4%) precedence rate. Among the seven listed procedure groups, those with clinically reasonable elective analogs were cholecystectomy, colon resection, and laparotomy. Emergent versus elective precedence rates were 90.2% versus 82.0% (P = 0.004) for colon resection, 81.3% versus 86.8% (P = 0.26) for cholecystectomy, and 68.8% versus 92.7% (P less then 0.001) for laparotomy. CONCLUSIONS Precedence rates in EGS were higher than expected and were similar to previously published rates in nonemergent surgery, suggesting that FTR is likely to be reliable using standard methodology. Management of complications after emergency operation may represent significant opportunities to prevent mortality. OBJECTIVE To investigate emotional dysregulation and psychiatric comorbidities associated with DEB-risk in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS A total of 75 children with T1DM aged between 8 and 19 were evaluated by K-SADS-PL to assess psychiatric diagnosis. DEB-risk was evaluated via Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R). Besides, all participants completed the Childhood Depression Inventory (CDI), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). RESULTS DEPS-R-positive (≥20) was detected in 28% of the participants. The only diagnostic difference was a significantly higher frequency of ED in DEPS-R-positive than DEPS-R-negative (OR = 8.5, CI = 1.94-37.1, p = .004). DEPS-R-positive cases had significantly higher scores of the CDI, STAI, DERS, and the subscales of Goals, Impulse, and Strategies of DERS (CDI U = 266.500, p = .001; STAI U = 288.500,p = .001; DERS U = 229.000, p = .001, Goals U = 283.500, p = .008, Impulse U = 274.000, p = .005, Strategies U = 281.500, p = .007). In stepwise linear regression analysis, STAI-state and DERS scores significantly determined DEB-risk (STAI β = 0.363, t(60) = 2.33, p = .02, DERS β = 0.240, t(60) = 4.14, p less then .001). CONCLUSION This cross-sectional study showed that DEPS-R-positive cases have an 8.5-fold increased risk for ED. DEPS-R-positive ones have difficulties in regulating their emotions and they are incapable of accessing emotion regulation strategies, engaging in goal-directed behavior while under difficult emotions, and impulse control. It can be beneficial for child psychiatrists to screen first for ED in DEPS-R-positive cases who are referred by child endocrinologist. They should also take into consideration anxiety levels and problems in emotion dysregulation in the DEPS-R-positive cases. It was presumed that the sudden shift of abiotic conditions of the environment will disturb growth and stoichiometry of the species. Analyses encompassed physicochemical water parameters (e.g. nutrient concentration, light availability), morphological features and elemental composition of the charophytes. Application of the coagulant caused shading of the plants and elimination of bioavailable phosphates from the water. This induced changes of behavioural ecology of the species, manifesting in elongation of the main axis and increase of the assimilation area (growth of branchlets and side-axes) as well as stoichiometric changes. It was found that shortage of phosphates in the water resulted in decreased phosphorus concentration in the thalli due to biological dilution. The increase of assimilation area and phosphorus dilution in the thalli have not been previously reported for charophytes. In this study, the qualitative transformation of the environment following application of iron as part of chemical lake restoration was evinced in significant ecological changes that adversely affected macrophytobenthos. The findings of the experiment can therefore be taken into account while planning restoration procedures, so as to preclude the risk of a negative trend of ecological changes.

Fourier ptychography microscopy is a powerful tool for wide-field and high-spatial-resolution imaging. It can achieve a large field of view and high-spatial-resolution imaging with a low numerical aperture objective by capturing a series of low-resolution (LR) images that contain the information of different spatial frequencies and then stitching them together in the Fourier domain. Furthermore, the phase information of the object can also be recovered simultaneously. In this Letter, we propose a method to realize adaptive high-dynamic-range (HDR) LR image acquisition with a red, green, and blue camera, which needs only single exposure for each light-emitting diode (LED) illumination. According to the imaging principle of a color camera, the filter of each color channel still allows additional light within a certain wavelength range to pass through, but with a **** smaller transmittance. By illuminating the sample with monochromatic light and combining the raw data from three color channels together, an HDR image corresponding to each LED illumination is obtained. The feasibility and good performance of our method are demonstrated by the experimental results.We present a scheme to realize precise discrimination of chiral molecules in a cavity. Assisted by additional laser pulses, cavity fields can evolve into different coherence states with contrary-sign displacements according to the handedness of molecules. Consequently, the handedness of molecules can be read out with homodyne measurement on the cavity, and the successful probability is nearly unity without very strong cavity fields. Here, we introduce the first multimodal (M-)HAOSLO for confocal and non-confocal split-detection (SD) imaging to allow for more comprehensive patient data collection. Finally, we demonstrate the method for the imaging of small fluorescent beads embedded in a 3D matrix. The results indicate excellent power penetration and focusing performance. We demonstrate that by simply switching different amounts of LED chips on or off, the proposed OSS-NOMA transmitter can deliver a fine-grained power allocation ratio ranging from 0.01 to one for two users. The implemented OSS-NOMA VLC prototype leveraging commercial components can achieve low bit error rates of ≤3.1×10-3 for two users at a data rate of 800 kbps, confirming the promising potential of this novel OSS-NOMA VLC for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Fourier ptychography microscopy is a powerful tool for wide-field and high-spatial-resolution imaging. It can achieve a large field of view and high-spatial-resolution imaging with a low numerical aperture objective by capturing a series of low-resolution (LR) images that contain the information of different spatial frequencies and then stitching them together in the Fourier domain. Furthermore, the phase information of the object can also be recovered simultaneously. In this Letter, we propose a method to realize adaptive high-dynamic-range (HDR) LR image acquisition with a red, green, and blue camera, which needs only single exposure for each light-emitting diode (LED) illumination. According to the imaging principle of a color camera, the filter of each color channel still allows additional light within a certain wavelength range to pass through, but with a much smaller transmittance. By illuminating the sample with monochromatic light and combining the raw data from three color channels together, an HDR image corresponding to each LED illumination is obtained. The feasibility and good performance of our method are demonstrated by the experimental results.We present a scheme to realize precise discrimination of chiral molecules in a cavity. Assisted by additional laser pulses, cavity fields can evolve into different coherence states with contrary-sign displacements according to the handedness of molecules. Consequently, the handedness of molecules can be read out with homodyne measurement on the cavity, and the successful probability is nearly unity without very strong cavity fields. Here, we introduce the first multimodal (M-)HAOSLO for confocal and non-confocal split-detection (SD) imaging to allow for more comprehensive patient data collection. Pulseless electrical activity (PEA) is increasingly observed in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), but outcomes are still poor. We aimed to assess the relationship between QRS characteristics and outcomes of patients with OHCA with initial PEA (OHCA-P).
This prospective observational study included patients aged at least 18 years who developed OHCA-P between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2018, and were enrolled in the Daegu Emergency Medical Services registry, South Korea. We performed multivariable logistic regression analyses to identify the associations between QRS characteristics and OHCA-P outcomes, in which QRS complexes were considered separately (model 1) and simultaneously (model 2). The primary outcome was survival to hospital discharge and the secondary outcome was a favourable neurological outcome.
Of the 3659 patients with OHCA, 576 were enrolled (median age 73 years; 334 men). A higher QRS amplitude was associated with survival to hospital discharge and a favourable neurological outcome in model 1 (adjusted OR (aOR) 1.077 and 1.106, respectively; 95% CI 1.021 to 0.136 and 1.029 to 1.190, respectively) and model 2 (aOR 1.084 and 1.123, respectively; 95% CI 1.026 to 1.145 and 1.036 to 1.216, respectively). A QRS width of <120 ms was associated with survival to hospital discharge and a favourable neurological outcome in model 1 (aOR 3.371 and 4.634, respectively; 95% CI 1.633 to 6.960 and 1.562 to 13.144, respectively) and model 2 (aOR 3.213 and 5.103, respectively; 95% CI 1.568 to 6.584 and 1.682 to 15.482, respectively). Survival to hospital discharge and neurological outcome were not associated with QRS frequency.

Accurately differentiating pneumocystis from cytomegalovirus pneumonia is crucial for correct therapy selection in AIDS patients. Hence, the goal of this study was to compare the computerized tomography (CT) features of pneumocystis pneumonia and cytomegalovirus pneumonia in AIDS patients and identify clinical hallmarks to accurately distinguish these two pathologies.
A total of 112 AIDS patients (78 with pneumocystis pneumonia and 34 cytomegalovirus pneumonia) at Beijing Ditan Hospital from January 2017 to May 2019 were included in this study. Two experienced chest radiologists retrospectively reviewed CT images for 17 features including ground-glass opacity, consolidation, nodules, and halo sign. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the significant parameters that distinguished pneumocystis pneumonia from cytomegalovirus pneumonia. Correlations were analyzed by Pearson or Spearman correlation analyses. Result were considered significant if P < 0.05.
The presence of consolilidation, nodules, and halo signs may contribute to the differential diagnosis of pneumocystis pneumonia or cytomegalovirus pneumonia. However, some CT features considered typical in one or other diseases appear with similar frequency in both cohorts of AIDS patients. Analysis of qualitative data reveals the types of action organisations took on behalf of members (mediation, removal of community members from harm, and advocacy), but also that sometimes organisations refused to take action, or community members declined their assistance.

The AMR patterns (the patterns among the isolates of pet dogs and caregivers) and the serotypes (thirteen serotypes with 18 isolates from pet dogs plus thirteen serotypes with 25 isolates from humans) between pet dogs and humans were not significantly different using Pearson's chi-squared test. The homologous Salmonella isolates from the Salmonella-present households was 5.13% (2/39). This study demonstrated that the hypothesis that there is a high risk of Salmonella infection passage between dogs and humans with close contact in Khon Kaen is doubtful. Only 5.13% of homologous Salmonella isolates from Salmonella-present households were found in Khon Kaen, Thailand, although the prevalence of Salmonella-positive samples, serotypes, and antimicrobial resistance patterns were quite similar among the two populations.The diagnosis of cancer and its treatment have an incomparable impact on a patient's life. In the early postoperative stages after the surgical treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), functions and well-being are limited, which leads to a fundamental decline of the quality of life (QoL). To date, no studies have been performed that focus on the development of special aspects during the time of the in-patient stay of OSCC patients. With the results of this cross-sectional study, we are able to identify those patients who tend to require special support. This cross-sectional study determined the postoperative QoL with a questionnaire (QU) that was handed out twice to OSCC patients after surgery during their inpatient stay. The questions were based on the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)'s Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ)-C30 and QLQ-H&N35. In our study, we found that for postoperative OSCC patients, eating, swallowing and speech were influenced the most. After decannulation, tracheotomy showed no impact on functions. Social contact was impaired at both timepoints. Especially female patients consider themselves to be more impaired on the scale of social contact. QoL should be checked with a standardized QU as an established tool during hospitalization in every oncology department. Only this procedure can pinpoint those patients who have struggles with their surgical outcome and need more assistance.Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifaceted matricellular protein, with well-recognized roles in both the physiological and pathological processes in the body. OPN is expressed in the main organs and cell types, in which it induces different biological actions. During physiological conditioning, OPN acts as both an intracellular protein and soluble excreted cytokine, regulating tissue remodeling and immune-infiltrate in adipose tissue the heart and the kidney. In contrast, the increased expression of OPN has been correlated with the severity of the cardiovascular and renal outcomes associated with obesity. Indeed, OPN expression is at the "cross roads" of visceral fat extension, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and renal disorders, in which OPN orchestrates the molecular interactions, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation. The common factor associated with OPN overexpression in adipose, cardiac and renal tissues seems attributable to the concomitant increase in visceral fat size and the increase in infiltrated OPN+ macrophages. Impressions were taken prior to tooth extraction, 4 months and 1 year after implant placement. The casts were digitized and compared. Mucosal recessions and horizontal ridge reduction were measured. A total of 16 implants were in the maxilla and 11 in the mandible. At the buccal aspect, there was a mean reduction of 0.94 mm after 4 months and 0.89 mm after one year (p = 0.933). At the palatal/lingual aspect, this was 1.09 mm after 4 months and 0.69 mm after 1 year (p = 0.001). After 1 year, a recession of 0.59 mm was measured at the zenith, 1.04 mm at the mesial and 0.98 mm at the distal papilla. The mean midfacial horizontal ridge reduction was 1.23 mm after 4 months and 1.45 mm after 1 year. At the midpalatal/midlingual aspect, the mean horizontal reduction was 1.43 mm after 4 months and 1.16 mm after 1 year. Immediate implant placement without bone grafting in the posterior jaw yields a significant horizontal ridge reduction and minor mucosal recession. A Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Food Craving Questionnaire-State (FCQ-S) and Food Craving Questionnaire-Trait (FCQ-T) were used. Our results showed an increase in vegetable, sugary food and snack consumption. An association between levels of foods cravings and snack consumption was also found. Data also showed a high percentage of physical inactivity before the COVID-19 lockdown, which was exacerbated during the home confinement.
The AMR patterns (the patterns among the isolates of pet dogs and caregivers) and the serotypes (thirteen serotypes with 18 isolates from pet dogs plus thirteen serotypes with 25 isolates from humans) between pet dogs and humans were not significantly different using Pearson's chi-squared test. The homologous Salmonella isolates from the Salmonella-present households was 5.13% (2/39). This study demonstrated that the hypothesis that there is a high risk of Salmonella infection passage between dogs and humans with close contact in Khon Kaen is doubtful. Only 5.13% of homologous Salmonella isolates from Salmonella-present households were found in Khon Kaen, Thailand, although the prevalence of Salmonella-positive samples, serotypes, and antimicrobial resistance patterns were quite similar among the two populations.The diagnosis of cancer and its treatment have an incomparable impact on a patient's life. In the early postoperative stages after the surgical treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), functions and well-being are limited, which leads to a fundamental decline of the quality of life (QoL). To date, no studies have been performed that focus on the development of special aspects during the time of the in-patient stay of OSCC patients. With the results of this cross-sectional study, we are able to identify those patients who tend to require special support. This cross-sectional study determined the postoperative QoL with a questionnaire (QU) that was handed out twice to OSCC patients after surgery during their inpatient stay. The questions were based on the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)'s Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ)-C30 and QLQ-H&N35. In our study, we found that for postoperative OSCC patients, eating, swallowing and speech were influenced the most. After decannulation, tracheotomy showed no impact on functions. Social contact was impaired at both timepoints. Especially female patients consider themselves to be more impaired on the scale of social contact. QoL should be checked with a standardized QU as an established tool during hospitalization in every oncology department. Only this procedure can pinpoint those patients who have struggles with their surgical outcome and need more assistance.Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifaceted matricellular protein, with well-recognized roles in both the physiological and pathological processes in the body. OPN is expressed in the main organs and cell types, in which it induces different biological actions. During physiological conditioning, OPN acts as both an intracellular protein and soluble excreted cytokine, regulating tissue remodeling and immune-infiltrate in adipose tissue the heart and the kidney. In contrast, the increased expression of OPN has been correlated with the severity of the cardiovascular and renal outcomes associated with obesity. The common factor associated with OPN overexpression in adipose, cardiac and renal tissues seems attributable to the concomitant increase in visceral fat size and the increase in infiltrated OPN+ macrophages. This review underlines the current knowledge on the molecular interactions between obesity and the cardiac-renal disorders ruled by OPN.The aim was to evaluate ridge reduction and mucosal recession following immediate placement of ultra-wide implants in molar sockets, without bone grafting. Impressions were taken prior to tooth extraction, 4 months and 1 year after implant placement. The casts were digitized and compared. Mucosal recessions and horizontal ridge reduction were measured. A total of 16 implants were in the maxilla and 11 in the mandible. At the buccal aspect, there was a mean reduction of 0.94 mm after 4 months and 0.89 mm after one year (p = 0.933). At the palatal/lingual aspect, this was 1.09 mm after 4 months and 0.69 mm after 1 year (p = 0.001). After 1 year, a recession of 0.59 mm was measured at the zenith, 1.04 mm at the mesial and 0.98 mm at the distal papilla. The mean midfacial horizontal ridge reduction was 1.23 mm after 4 months and 1.45 mm after 1 year. At the midpalatal/midlingual aspect, the mean horizontal reduction was 1.43 mm after 4 months and 1.16 mm after 1 year. Immediate implant placement without bone grafting in the posterior jaw yields a significant horizontal ridge reduction and minor mucosal recession. The importance of host genetics and demography in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a crucial aspect of infection, prognosis and associated case fatality rate. Individual genetic landscapes can contribute to understand Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) burden and can give information on how to fight virus spreading and the associated severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The spread and pathogenicity of the virus have become pandemic on specific geographic areas and ethnicities. Interestingly, SARS-CoV-2 firstly emerged in East Asia and next in Europe, where it has caused higher morbidity and mortality. This is a peculiar feature of SARS-CoV-2, different from past global viral infections (i.e., SARS-1 or MERS); it shares with the previous pandemics strong age- and sex-dependent gaps in the disease outcome. The observation that the severest COVID-19 patients are more likely to have a history of hypertension, diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease and receive Renin-Angiotensin-System (RAS) inhibitor treatment raised the hypothesis that RAS-unbalancing may have a crucial role. Materials and Methods This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined a priori to select the best longitudinal evidence. Only randomized clinical trials (RCT) and prospective clinical studies (PCS), with a follow-up ≥ 2-year, and exhibiting well-established clinical and radiographic outcome criteria, were selected. Results A total of 573 articles were obtained, from which 10 fulfill inclusion criteria 6 PCS and 4 RCT. Meta-analysis showed a pooled proportion of success rate of 91.3%, from an overall amount of 453 treated teeth included in RCT; from overall 839 included teeth in PCS, a pooled success rate of 78.4% was observed, with the follow-up time ranging from 2 to 13-years. Survival rate outcomes varied from 79 to 100% for the same follow-up period. Five prognostic factors with influence on the outcome were disclosed smoking habits, tooth location and type, absence/presence of dentinal defects, interproximal bone level, and root-end filling material. Regeneration of lost or injured organs is an intriguing process where numerous cellular events take place to form the new structure. Studies of this process during reconstitution of the intestine have been performed in echinoderms, particularly in holothurians. Many cellular events triggered during regeneration have been described using the sea cucumber Holothuria glaberrima as a research model. More recent experiments have targeted the molecular mechanism behind the process, a task that has been eased by the new sequencing technologies now available. In this review we present the studies involving cellular processes and the genes that have been identified to be associated with the early events of gut regeneration. We also present the ongoing efforts to perform functional studies necessary to establish the role(s) of the identified genes. A synopsis of the studies is given with the course of the regenerative process established so far.Cell fusion is a process in which cells unite their membranes and cytoplasm and is fundamental for sexual reproduction and embryonic development. Among the best-known cell fusion processes during animal development are fertilization, myoblast fusion, osteoclast generation, and vulva formation in Caenorhabditis elegans. Although it is involved in many other functions in unicellular and multicellular organisms, little is known about the mechanisms of cell fusion and the genes that code for the proteins participating in this process. Benjamin Podbilewicz has dedicated many years to understanding the process and mechanisms of cell fusion. In this interview, he spoke to us about how he began his studies of this process, his contributions to this exciting field, scientific ties with Ibero-America and his strategies for a well-balanced scientific/personal life.The pocket protein family controls several cellular functions such as cell cycle, differentiation, and apoptosis, among others; however, its role in stress has been poorly explored. The roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans is a simple model organism whose genes are highly conserved during evolution. C. elegans has only one pocket protein, LIN-35; a pRB-related protein similar to p130. To control the expression of some of its targets, LIN-35 interacts with E2F-DP transcription factors and LIN-52, a member of SynMUV (Synthetic Muv complex). Together, these proteins form the DRM complex, which is also known as the DREAM complex in mammals. In this review, we will focus on the role of LIN-35 and its partners in the stress response. It has been shown that LIN-35 is required to control starvation in L1 and L4 larval stages, and to induce starvation-induced germ apoptosis. Remarkably, during L1 starvation, insulin/IGF-1 receptor signaling (IIS), as well as the pathogenic, toxin, and oxidative stress-responsive genes, are repressed by LIN-35. The lack of lin-35 also triggers a downregulation of oxidative stress genes. Recent works showed that lin-35 and hpl-2 mutant animals showed enhanced resistance to UPR ER. Additionally, hpl-2 mutant animals also exhibited the upregulation of autophagic genes, suggesting that the SynMuv/DRM proteins participate in this process. Finally, lin-35(n745) mutant animals overexpressed hsp-6, a chaperone that participated in the UPRmt. All of these data demonstrate that LIN-35 and its partners play an important role during the stress response.The endocrine disruptor Bisphenol A (BPA) crosses the placental barrier and reaches the fetal organs, including the gonads. In the testis, fetal Leydig cells (FLC) produce testosterone required for the male phenotype and homeostatic cell-cell signaling in the developing testis. Although it is known that BPA affects cell proliferation and differentiation in FLC, results concerning the mechanism involved are contradictory, mainly due to differences among species. Fast developing fetal gonads of rodents lack cortex and medulla, whereas species with more extended gestation periods form these two tissue compartments. The rabbit provides a good subject for studying the disruptive effect of BPA in fetal Leydig and possible postnatal endocrine consequences in adult Leydig cells. Here, we investigated the impact of BPA administered to pregnant rabbits does, on the FLC population of the developing testes. Using qRT-PCR, we assessed the levels of SF1, CYP11A1, 3β-HSD, and androgen receptor (AR) genes, and levels of fetal serum testosterone were measured by ELISA. These levels correlated with both the mitotic activity and the ultrastructural differentiation of the FLC by confocal and electron microscopy, respectively. Results indicate that BPA alters the expression levels of essential genes involved in androgen paracrine signaling, modifies the proliferation and differentiation of the FLCs, and alters the levels of serum testosterone after birth. Thus, BPA may change the postnatal levels of serum testosterone due to the impaired FLC population formed by the proliferating stem and non-proliferating cytodifferentiated FLC.Developmental Biology is a growing discipline in Chile. After this initial drive, Claudio Barros beginning in the late 1960s and Juan Fernández in the late 1970s, contributed with unique and complementary facets to the early growth of the discipline. In the 1980s, the community of developmental biologists created its first forms of association together with the reproduction biology community, and in 1993 the first international course of developmental biology was organised. During the 1990s and 2000s, a group of young investigators arrived in Chile after postdocs in Europe and the US to build the first research centres of developmental biology, fostering the discipline to an unprecedented level. In the 2010s, as these centres consolidated, a stream of young developmental biologists established new labs at several institutions, expanding the community size and broadening its scope. It has been shown that LIN-35 is required to control starvation in L1 and L4 larval stages, and to induce starvation-induced germ apoptosis. Remarkably, during L1 starvation, insulin/IGF-1 receptor signaling (IIS), as well as the pathogenic, toxin, and oxidative stress-responsive genes, are repressed by LIN-35. In the testis, fetal Leydig cells (FLC) produce testosterone required for the male phenotype and homeostatic cell-cell signaling in the developing testis. Although it is known that BPA affects cell proliferation and differentiation in FLC, results concerning the mechanism involved are contradictory, mainly due to differences among species. Fast developing fetal gonads of rodents lack cortex and medulla, whereas species with more extended gestation periods form these two tissue compartments. The rabbit provides a good subject for studying the disruptive effect of BPA in fetal Leydig and possible postnatal endocrine consequences in adult Leydig cells. Here, we investigated the impact of BPA administered to pregnant rabbits does, on the FLC population of the developing testes. Using qRT-PCR, we assessed the levels of SF1, CYP11A1, 3β-HSD, and androgen receptor (AR) genes, and levels of fetal serum testosterone were measured by ELISA. These levels correlated with both the mitotic activity and the ultrastructural differentiation of the FLC by confocal and electron microscopy, respectively. Results indicate that BPA alters the expression levels of essential genes involved in androgen paracrine signaling, modifies the proliferation and differentiation of the FLCs, and alters the levels of serum testosterone after birth. Thus, BPA may change the postnatal levels of serum testosterone due to the impaired FLC population formed by the proliferating stem and non-proliferating cytodifferentiated FLC.Developmental Biology is a growing discipline in Chile. It started in the 1950s when Luis Izquierdo challenged the traditional descriptive perspective of embryology and comparative anatomy to explore the mechanisms underlying the origin of form. After this initial drive, Claudio Barros beginning in the late 1960s and Juan Fernández in the late 1970s, contributed with unique and complementary facets to the early growth of the discipline. In the 1980s, the community of developmental biologists created its first forms of association together with the reproduction biology community, and in 1993 the first international course of developmental biology was organised. During the 1990s and 2000s, a group of young investigators arrived in Chile after postdocs in Europe and the US to build the first research centres of developmental biology, fostering the discipline to an unprecedented level. In the 2010s, as these centres consolidated, a stream of young developmental biologists established new labs at several institutions, expanding the community size and broadening its scope. In this work we review the literature on cue reactivity in obesity and perform a preregistered meta-analysis of studies investigating effects of obesity on brain responses to passive food pictures viewing. Further, we examine whether age influences brain responses to food cues in obesity. In the meta-analysis we included 13 studies of children and adults that investigated group differences (obese vs. lean) in responses to food vs. non-food pictures viewing. While we found no significant differences in the overall meta-analysis, we show that age significantly influences brain response differences to food cues in the left insula and the left fusiform gyrus. In the left insula, obese vs. lean brain differences in response to food cues decreased with age, while in the left fusiform gyrus the pattern was opposite. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that Hoxc6 affects the proliferation and migration of rat VSMCs, and hence is involved in AS. The results showed that the expression of Hoxc6 mRNA and protein was higher in normal rat aortic wall than in the myocardium. Subsequently, a rat model of AS was established by high-fat feeding for 2 months. The expression of Hoxc6 mRNA and protein was increased significantly in AS lesions, while the expression of p53 protein was decreased and that of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was increased. Moreover, not only the proliferation and mobility of cells in normal culture were decreased, but also the proliferation was stimulated by oxidized low-density lipoprotein, which was decreased after downregulation of Hoxc6 expression in VSMCs in rat. Consecutively, the expression of PCNA protein was decreased, while that of p53 was increased. These results indicated that Hoxc6 is probably involved in AS via p53 and PCNA by affecting the proliferation and migration of VSMCs.
To determine the prevalence of hypertension and associated factors in farmers in a rural region of Brazil.
A cross-sectional study was conducted involving a sample of 790 farmers who were residents of Espírito Santo, Brazil.
The prevalence of hypertension was 35.8% (95%CI 32.5-39.1%, n=283); however, it was higher in men (36.6%, n=151, p<0.001) and in those with excess weight (48.9%, n=197, p<0.001). Of the 283 hypertensive patients, 125 (44.2%) did not use antihypertensive drugs. In men, lower level of schooling (p=0.004), working in the field for fewer daily hours (p<0.001), and having greater abdominal adiposity (p=0.039) were associated with the presence of increased blood pressure. In women, age (p=0.002), lower schooling (p=0.021), and increased central adiposity (p=0.003) were independent predictors of blood pressure.
The highest prevalence of hypertension was observed in men, with elevated blood pressure being strongly associated with social and economic factors. In women, the association with the classic factors (age, increase in abdominal adiposity, and low schooling) was stronger.

In forensic facial approximation, facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) measurements play a major role. These values are affected by many factors such as ethnicity, age and sex, in addition to measurement errors. We hypothesize that an additional source of error is the lack of consideration of facial type in the assessment of FSTT norms. The purpose of this study was to 1- evaluate the presence of significant effects of vertical facial type within the FSTT measurements in adults and 2- assess the correlations between FSTT and hard and soft tissue cephalometric measurements. The sample consisted of the lateral cephalometric radiographs of 222 adult individuals (87 males; 135 females, 23.49±6.24 years of age) with normal occlusion and balanced profiles. Hard and soft tissue cephalometric measurements were taken, in addition to FSST at 10 facial landmarks. The sample was categorized into 3 vertical pattern groups based on the MP/SN angle hypodivergent, normodivergent and hyperdivergent. Statistical analyses included MANOVA test and Pearson moment product for associations among variables. Statistically significant effect of vertical divergence on FSTT values was limited to the levels of Stomion, Labiomentale and Pogonion and FSTT measurements were associated with measurements related to the lower face (Lm and Pog) Moderate to high correlations between mandibular length and ramus length and FSTT values related to the lower face (LL, Lm and Pog mainly) emphasize further the important role of the underlying skeleton.Pluronics are a class of amphiphilic tri-block copolymers with wide pharmaceutical applicability. In the past decades, the ability to form biocompatible nanosized micelles was exploited to formulate stable drug nanovehicles with potential use in antitumor therapy. Due to the great potential for tuning physical and structural properties of Pluronic unimers, a panoply of drug or polynucleotide-loaded micelles was prepared and tested for their antitumoral activity. The attractive inherent antitumor properties of Pluronic polymers in combination with cell targeting and stimuli-responsive ligands greatly improved antitumoral therapeutic effects of tested drugs. In spite of that, the extraordinary complexity of biological challenges in the delivery of micellar drug payload makes their therapeutic potential still not exploited to the fullest. In this review paper we attempt to present the latest developments in the field of Pluronic based nanovehicles and their application in anticancer therapy with an overview of the chemistry involved in the preparation of these nanovehicles.The lateral mobility serves as a key function of the cell membrane and can be regulated by the cholesterol. Here supported lipid bilayers were used to quantitatively analyse the influence of cholesterol on the fluidity of lipid bilayer in the environments with and without an electric field. We observed that with the increase of cholesterol proportion (0-30 mol%), the diffusion coefficient of DOPC lipid bilayer gradually decreased from 1.30 ± 0.15 μm2 s-1 to 0.28 ± 0.13 μm2 s-1, where as that of DPPC lipid bilayer increased slightly from ∼0 to 0.45 ± 0.18 μm2 s-1. We then showed that cholesterol also regulated the movement of charged lipids in the bilayer in the electric field. The migration rate of charged lipids in the DOPC bilayers slowed down as the cholesterol increased. The clarification of the dose-effect relationship of cholesterol for the bidirectional regulating effect on the mobility of lipid bilayer will extend applications of supported lipid bilayers as the model of cell membrane.The development of targeted delivery systems can improve the selectivity of cancer drugs. Additionally, a system that promotes the controlled delivery of the drug triggered by an external stimulus in the exact target tissue is highly desirable. Regarding the light stimulus, the NIR window (650-950 nm) is the most suitable due to its higher capacity of penetration in human tissues and less harmful effects on normal cells. In this work, new red-light-responsive nanoparticles for doxorubicin delivery were developed. The nanoparticles were based on cleavable di-block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) linked by a red-light sensitive segment (1,2-bis(2-hydroxyethylthio)ethylene, BHETE). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/choline-hydroxide.html The PEG-BHETE-PLA copolymers were synthesized under mild conditions and exhibited a narrow polydispersity. Due to the promising results obtained with the light-sensitive PEG-BHETE-PLA nanoparticles, these materials have great potential to be used in drug delivery systems for cancer therapy.Two plant-associated bacterial strains were isolated from Beijing, China. The two strains possessed almost identical 16S rRNA gene sequences. However, REP-PCR fingerprint patterns discriminated that they were not from one clonal origin. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) value and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value between the two strains were 99.4% and 94.7%, respectively, suggesting that they belonged to the same species. The 16S rRNA gene phylogeny analysis indicated that the two strains belonged to the genus Variovorax and were closely related to V. paradoxus NBRC 15149T and V. boronicumulans BAM-48T. Their phylogenetic relationship were confirmed in both phylogenetic trees constructed with house-keeping gene sequences and concatenated core genes of the genome. The ANI and dDDH comparisons among 502T and the most related type strains showed values below the accepted threshold for species discrimination. The genome sizes of strains 502T and T529 were 6.76 and 6.69 Mbp, respectively. The strain 502T had 6,227 predicted genes with DNA G+C content of 67.4 %. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphospatidylglycerol. The major fatty acids of strain 502T were C10 03-OH (26.2%), C160 (12.9%), C170 cyclo (14.5%) and summed feature 3 (21.4%). Furthermore, both strains showed the potential of plant growth promotion. Based on these results, the two isolates could be considered to represent a novel species of the genus Variovorax, for which the name Variovorax beijingensis sp. nov., is proposed, with 502T (= DSM 106862T = CGMCC 1.16560T) as the type strain.

In this work, new red-light-responsive nanoparticles for doxorubicin delivery were developed. The nanoparticles presented a size between 53 and 133 nm, with a doxorubicin loading capacity between 1.2 and 4.4 wt%. Release study of the encapsulated doxorubicin confirms the light-triggered nanoparticle disassembly process. In vitro cytotoxicity tests in MCF7 cell line, for the light-triggered nanoparticles, showed a decrease in cancer cells' viability higher than 25% compared to non-irradiated cells. Due to the promising results obtained with the light-sensitive PEG-BHETE-PLA nanoparticles, these materials have great potential to be used in drug delivery systems for cancer therapy.Two plant-associated bacterial strains were isolated from Beijing, China. The two strains possessed almost identical 16S rRNA gene sequences. However, REP-PCR fingerprint patterns discriminated that they were not from one clonal origin. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) value and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value between the two strains were 99.4% and 94.7%, respectively, suggesting that they belonged to the same species. The 16S rRNA gene phylogeny analysis indicated that the two strains belonged to the genus Variovorax and were closely related to V. paradoxus NBRC 15149T and V. boronicumulans BAM-48T. Their phylogenetic relationship were confirmed in both phylogenetic trees constructed with house-keeping gene sequences and concatenated core genes of the genome. The ANI and dDDH comparisons among 502T and the most related type strains showed values below the accepted threshold for species discrimination. The genome sizes of strains 502T and T529 were 6.76 and 6.69 Mbp, respectively. The strain 502T had 6,227 predicted genes with DNA G+C content of 67.4 %. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphospatidylglycerol. The major fatty acids of strain 502T were C10 03-OH (26.2%), C160 (12.9%), C170 cyclo (14.5%) and summed feature 3 (21.4%). Furthermore, both strains showed the potential of plant growth promotion.
