Out of them, one gene set, including BIRC5, NCAPG, CCNB2, and BUB1, was involved in cell division and interacted with both PRR11 and SKA2. These genes were verified as the downregulated genes via RT-PCR and their high expression significantly correlated with the shorter overall survival of LSCC patients. Taken together, our results indicate that GLI1/2 mediates the expression of the PRR11-SKA2-centric gene set that serves as an unfavorable prognostic indicator for LSCC patients, potentializing new combinatorial diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in LSCC.
    The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to significant changes in endoscopy units worldwide, with potential impact on patients' welfare as well as on endoscopy training. We aimed to assess the real-life impact of COVID-19 on the endoscopy unit in a tertiary care center from Romania.

    A 6.5-month period during the COVID-19 pandemic was compared to a similar period from 2019.

Hence, controlling the purity and authenticity of high-oil corn is of great importance in current crop research. The aim of this study is to develop a novel method for corn variety discrimination using Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and signal classification analysis. In brief, the method involves feature extraction and variable selection of raw signals from Terahertz time-domain waveforms (THz-TDW) and absorption spectrum (THz-AS), and the use of classifiers on those treated signals to establish the discrimination models. Principle component analysis (PCA) were used for feature extraction with THz-TDW, while three different methods of variable selection were implemented with THz-AS, including uninformative variables elimination (UVE), uninformative variables elimination-successive projections algorithm (UVE-SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS). Then, two classificationriculture research, while expanding the application of THz spectroscopy in the related field.Since 1, 2, 3-Benzotriazole (BTA) is one of the most commonly used metal passivators in transformer oil, on-site and quantitative detection of BTA plays a significant role in fast evaluation of the performance of the insulating oil. After BTA from transformer oil were adsorbed by hydrophilic CLPs, highly reproducible SERS signal of BTA can be obtained by dropping on the substrate. The characteristic Raman shift at 1386 cm-1 of BTA has been selected to establish a good linearity between its relative intensity and concentration in the range of 1-300 mg/L, and the detection limit for BTA was down to 0.12 mg/L.     Nursing professional identity is an important factor in the development of nursing education and clinical practice. Career-planning curriculums enable students to learn relevant knowledge and skills in a targeted manner, in addition to achieve career targets. Assessment and analysis of the present situation of Chinese nursing students' career planning and professional identity may provide an important guidance for the improvement of teaching content and quality of the career-planning curriculum. This study aimed to describe nursing students' professional identity, and to find out influences of nursing students' career planning, internship experience, and other factors on professional identity.

    A descriptive cross-sectional research method was employed to conduct a questionnaire on 453 full-time junior and senior undergraduate nursing students in China in December 2019.

    The average score for nursing students' professional identity was 101.42, which is at a moderately low-level. There was a significantly positive correlation between the level of nursing students' career planning and professional identity (r=0.529, P<0.01). Nursing students' professional identity was also influenced by grade, age, acceptance of career-planning curriculums, and other factors.

    The results indicated that the level of professional identity in nursing students is closely associated with their career planning. One strategy to improve this situation is to motivate universities to pay further attention to the effectiveness of career-planning curriculums and, to improve the quality of teaching and guidance system.

We established genomically representative patient-derived cancer cells (PDCs) from the tumor sample and performed high-throughput drug sensitivity testing with 527 oncology compounds to identify potent inhibitors. As expected, the PDCs were overall sensitive to the ALK inhibitors, although the eight different inhibitors tested had variable efficacy. We also discovered other effective inhibitors, such as MEK/ERK inhibitors and those targeting pathways downstream of ALK as well as Bcl-xl inhibitors. In contrast, most cytotoxic drugs were not very effective. ALK inhibitors synergized with MEK and PI3K/mTOR inhibitors, highlighting potential combinatorial strategies to enhance drug efficacy and tackle drug resistance.

  • We have previously shown that histamine (2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethanamine) exerted concentration-dependent positive inotropic effects (PIE) or positive chronotropic effects (PCE) on isolated left and right atria, respectively, of transgenic (H2R-TG) **** that overexpress the human H2 histamine receptor (H2R) in the heart; however, the effects were not seen in their wild-type (WT) littermates. Amitriptyline, which is still a highly prescribed antidepressant drug, was reported to act as antagonist on H2Rs. Here, we wanted to determine whether the histamine effects in H2R-TG were antagonized by amitriptyline. Contractile studies were performed on isolated left and right atrial preparations, isolated perfused hearts from H2R-TG and WT **** and human atrial preparations. Amitriptyline shifted the concentration-dependent PIE of histamine (1 nM-10 μM) to higher concentrations (rightward shift) in left atrial preparations from H2R-TG. Similarly, in isolated perfused hearts from H2R-TG and WT ****, histamine increased the contractile parameters and the phosphorylation state of phospholamban (PLB) at serine 16 in the H2R-TG ****, but not in the WT ****. However, the increases in contractility and PLB phosphorylation were attenuated by the addition of amitriptyline in perfused hearts from H2R-TG. In isolated electrically stimulated human atria, the PIE of histamine that was applied in increasing concentrations from 1 nM to 10 μM was reduced by 10-μM amitriptyline. In summary, we present functional evidence that amitriptyline also acts as an antagonist of contractility at H2Rs in H2R-TG mouse hearts and in the human heart which might in part explain the side effects of amitriptyline.
    Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is emerging as apotential treatment of chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs). The purpose of this study is to describe MMA angiographic anatomy in relation to CSDH embolization.

    This retrospective monocentric study was performed on imaging data of MMA embolization procedures for CSDH treatment performed between March15, 2018 and April30, 2020. Imaging data, including digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were reviewed independently by two physicians. Discrepancies were resolved by consensus. The MMA bifurcation pattern was analyzed according to an extended Adachi classification. Relations of the MMA with the ophthalmic artery (OA) were also analyzed.

    In this study, 140 MMAs were analyzed. Dominance of the anterior branch (typeI) was observed in only 57/140 (41%) MMAs with amoderate interobserver agreement for classifying MMA into typeI against all other (κ = 0.53, 95% confidence interval, CI 0.39-0.67). The posterior branch presented aproximal origin (typeA), at the point of emergence of the MMA from the foramen spinosum or its immediate vicinity, in 48/135 (36%) MMAs with avery good interobserver agreement for classifying MMAs into typeA against all other (κ = 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.92). An angiographic relationship with the OA was observed in 26MMAs (19%).

A reliable method to report results irrespective of treatment modality is needed to enable comparisons.     We have previously shown that histamine (2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethanamine) exerted concentration-dependent positive inotropic effects (PIE) or positive chronotropic effects (PCE) on isolated left and right atria, respectively, of transgenic (H2R-TG) mice that overexpress the human H2 histamine receptor (H2R) in the heart; however, the effects were not seen in their wild-type (WT) littermates. Amitriptyline, which is still a highly prescribed antidepressant drug, was reported to act as antagonist on H2Rs. Here, we wanted to determine whether the histamine effects in H2R-TG were antagonized by amitriptyline. Contractile studies were performed on isolated left and right atrial preparations, isolated perfused hearts from H2R-TG and WT mice and human atrial preparations. Amitriptyline shifted the concentration-dependent PIE of histamine (1 nM-10 μM) to higher concentrations (rightward shift) in left atrial preparations from H2R-TG. Similarly, in isolated perfused hearts from H2R-TG and WT mice, histamine increased the contractile parameters and the phosphorylation state of phospholamban (PLB) at serine 16 in the H2R-TG mice, but not in the WT mice. However, the increases in contractility and PLB phosphorylation were attenuated by the addition of amitriptyline in perfused hearts from H2R-TG. In isolated electrically stimulated human atria, the PIE of histamine that was applied in increasing concentrations from 1 nM to 10 μM was reduced by 10-μM amitriptyline. Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is emerging as apotential treatment of chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs). The purpose of this study is to describe MMA angiographic anatomy in relation to CSDH embolization. This retrospective monocentric study was performed on imaging data of MMA embolization procedures for CSDH treatment performed between March15, 2018 and April30, 2020. Imaging data, including digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were reviewed independently by two physicians. Discrepancies were resolved by consensus. The MMA bifurcation pattern was analyzed according to an extended Adachi classification. Relations of the MMA with the ophthalmic artery (OA) were also analyzed. In this study, 140 MMAs were analyzed. Dominance of the anterior branch (typeI) was observed in only 57/140 (41%) MMAs with amoderate interobserver agreement for classifying MMA into typeI against all other (κ = 0.53, 95% confidence interval, CI 0.39-0.67). The posterior branch presented aproximal origin (typeA), at the point of emergence of the MMA from the foramen spinosum or its immediate vicinity, in 48/135 (36%) MMAs with avery good interobserver agreement for classifying MMAs into typeA against all other (κ = 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.92).   • This study evaluates the genetic spectrum of leukodystrophies and leukoencephalopathies in Iran. 152 children, aged from 1 day to 15 years, were genetically tested for leukodystrophies and leukoencephalopathies based on clinical and neuroradiological findings from 2016 to 2019. Patients with a suggestive specific leukodystrophy, e. g. metachromatic leukodystrophy, Canavan disease, Tay-Sachs disease were tested for mutations in single genes (108; 71%) while patients with less suggestive findings were evaluated by NGS. 108 of 152(71%) had MRI patterns and clinical findings suggestive of a known leukodystrophy. To address whether sequence diversity in PvMSP9 among field isolates could affect natural antibody responses, the recombinant proteins representing two variants each for the N- and the C-terminal domains of PvMSP-9 were used as antigens to assess antibody reactivity among 246 P. vivax-infected patients' sera from Tak and Ubon Ratchathani Provinces in Thailand. Results revealed that the seropositivity rates of IgG antibodies to the N-terminal antigens were higher than those to the C-terminal antigens (87.80% vs. 67.48%). Most seropositive sera were reactive to both variants, suggesting the presence of common epitopes. Variant-specific antibodies to the N- and the C-terminal antigens were detected in 15.85% and 16.70% of serum samples, respectively. These seropositivity rates were not significant difference between provinces. The seropositivity rates, levels and avidity of anti-PvMSP9 antibodies exhibited positive trends towards increasing malaria episodes. In this study, we used the model of cardiomyocyte differentiation from mouse ES cells to elucidate the mechanisms for the mitochondrial damage in ESC-CMs after knockdown of Rictor. We showed swollen and ruptured mitochondria were observed after knockdown of Rictor under transmission electron microscope. ATP production and mitochondrial transmembrane potential were significantly decreased in Rictor-knockdown cells. Furthermore, knockdown of Rictor inhibited the activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex. The above-mentioned changes were linked to inhibiting the translocation of Cx43 into mitochondria by knockdown of Rictor. We revealed that knockdown of Rictor inactivated the mTOR/Akt signalling pathway and subsequently decreased HDAC6 expression, resulted in Hsp90 hyper-acetylation caused by HDAC6 inhibition, thus, inhibited the formation of Hsp90-Cx43-TOM20 complex. The neurons derived from mouse cortical astrocytes display typical neuronal morphologies, express neuronal markers and possess typical neuronal electrophysiological properties. More importantly, these neurons can survive and mature in the mouse brain in vivo.   • The aim of this review is to decipher the major central RAAS mechanisms involved in blood pressure regulation. In addition, paracrine functions of brain RAAS and its role in neuroprotection and cognition are also described in this review.
    Thoracic vascular structures often preclude transbronchial access to central lung parenchymal lesions and lymph nodes, thereby necessitating either a surgical or transvascular needle aspiration (TVNA) approach for diagnostic sampling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) TVNA in the diagnosis and staging of mediastinal tumors.

    We performed a retrospective analysis of 35 cases of EBUS-TVNA. Cases were reviewed in the Cerner electronic medical records between March 2013 and October 2018. Records were reviewed for patient comorbidities, smoking status, anticoagulation intake, procedural details, sample results, and postprocedural complications.

    Thirty-five EBUS-TVNA procedures were reviewed. Twenty-nine of them were performed by traversing the main pulmonary artery or its branches. Three involved transvascular access through the azygous vein, 2 via the brachiocephalic artery and 1 through the superior vena cava. Only 4 patients (11.4%) experienced postprocedural complications, which included mild hemoptysis, moderate hemoptysis requiring epinephrine and saline infusion, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and a rapid ventricular rate on top of preexisting atrial fibrillation. The yield of TVNA for malignancy was 22 (95.6%) of 23 patients. Overall yield was 31 (88.6%) of 35, with a need for additional intervention in 4 (11.4%) of 35 patients. Mutational analysis was adequate when ordered.

    In our single-center experience, the EBUS-TVNA procedure had a high diagnostic yield and was associated with low rates of postprocedural complications. Further trials are needed to assess its efficacy compared to more invasive procedures.

    We assessed the long-term oncologic safety of nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) compared to skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) for primary breast cancer patients with immediate reconstruction.

    Data of stage 0-III primary breast cancer patients undergoing NSM (n= 190) or SSM (n= 729) from June 2006 to December 2012 were retrospectively collected. Nipple-tumor distance (NTD) was measured on pretreatment mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, or ultrasonography findings.     Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is associated with a grave prognosis in breast cancer (**) and can be controlled with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). Information regarding LM and VPS based on intrinsic subtype is limited; thus, we investigated the clinical outcomes of ** treated with VPS.

    The aim of this review is to decipher the major central RAAS mechanisms involved in blood pressure regulation. In addition, paracrine functions of brain RAAS and its role in neuroprotection and cognition are also described in this review. Thoracic vascular structures often preclude transbronchial access to central lung parenchymal lesions and lymph nodes, thereby necessitating either a surgical or transvascular needle aspiration (TVNA) approach for diagnostic sampling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) TVNA in the diagnosis and staging of mediastinal tumors. We performed a retrospective analysis of 35 cases of EBUS-TVNA. Cases were reviewed in the Cerner electronic medical records between March 2013 and October 2018. Records were reviewed for patient comorbidities, smoking status, anticoagulation intake, procedural details, sample results, and postprocedural complications. Thirty-five EBUS-TVNA procedures were reviewed. Twenty-nine of them were performed by traversing the main pulmonary artery or its branches. Three involved transvascular access through the azygous vein, 2 via the brachiocephalic artery and 1 through the superior vena cava. Only 4 patients (11.4%) experienced postprocedural complications, which included mild hemoptysis, moderate hemoptysis requiring epinephrine and saline infusion, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and a rapid ventricular rate on top of preexisting atrial fibrillation. The yield of TVNA for malignancy was 22 (95.6%) of 23 patients. Overall yield was 31 (88.6%) of 35, with a need for additional intervention in 4 (11.4%) of 35 patients. Mutational analysis was adequate when ordered. In our single-center experience, the EBUS-TVNA procedure had a high diagnostic yield and was associated with low rates of postprocedural complications. The present retrospective study comprised 70 patients diagnosed with LM who received a VPS. The patients were divided into 4 groups based on BC subtype hormone receptor (HR) /human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) , HR /HER2 , HR /HER2 , and triple negative BC (TNBC). The most common indications for VPS were uncontrolled intracranial pressure (57.1%) and uncontrolled headache (55.7%), which improved in 54 (77.1%) of 70 patients after VPS. The median overall survival (OS) after brain or LM and overall survival after VPS were 7.6 and 2.3 months, respectively. Messenger RNA (mRNA) expression was quantified for DA and appetite associated markers in the VTA and NAc and western blots measured the immediate early gene FosB and its isoform ΔFosB. The date of onset of the disease has a greater influence on the accuracy of forecasts than weather inputs and, among weather inputs, precipitation has a greater influence than temperature. Secondary aims were to assess the relationship between gender and cause specific death, risk of variceal bleeding and incidence rates of gastroesophageal varices in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS All new patients with gastroesophageal varices due to liver cirrhosis at Oslo University Hospital between 2006 and May 2016 were identified. Clinical data were retrieved retrospectively from hospital files. Causes of death were classified according to a specified protocol in cases of in-hospital-death, otherwise by data from the Norwegian Death Registry. Competing risk analyses were used to calculate cumulative incidences and risks of i) all-cause death, ii) cause-specific death and iii) variceal bleeding or re-bleeding. In the present study, to test alterations of intestinal microbiota at high altitude comparing to that at low altitude, we analyzed rat feces from plain group and high-altitude group by 16S rRNA analysis. To detect concentrations of aspirin and salicylic acid, we established a reliable liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method to measure aspirin and salicylic acid concentrations in fecal suspensions and plasma. Our study found that the plateau hypoxic environment caused a significant increase in Bacteroides in rat feces, while Corynebacterium, Prevotella, and Coprococcus were declined. In addition, compared with the plain group, the metabolic activity of fecal suspensions from the plateau group on aspirin was significantly reduced. More importantly, these changes in the intestinal microbiota led to increasing absorption of aspirin in the rats after rapidly ascent to the plateau, and a reduction in the pharmacodynamic index TXB2, which would possibly result in bleeding. The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional status of patients and identify factors associated with undernutrition among HIV/AIDS patients on follow-up care in Jimma medical center, Southwest Ethiopia. METHODS A cross-sectional study design was conducted from March-April 2016. Data were collected retrospectively from clinical records of HIV/AIDS patients enrolled for follow up care in ART clinic from June 2010 to January 2016. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify independent predictor of undernutrition. RESULTS Data of 1062 patients were included in the study. The prevalence of undernutrition (BMI less then 18.5 kg/m2) and overweight or obesity were 34% and 9%, respectively. Out of undernourished patients, severely malnourished patients (BMI less then 16 kg/m2) accounted of 9%.

Secondary aims were to assess the relationship between gender and cause specific death, risk of variceal bleeding and incidence rates of gastroesophageal varices in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS All new patients with gastroesophageal varices due to liver cirrhosis at Oslo University Hospital between 2006 and May 2016 were identified. Clinical data were retrieved retrospectively from hospital files. Causes of death were classified according to a specified protocol in cases of in-hospital-death, otherwise by data from the Norwegian Death Registry. Competing risk analyses were used to calculate cumulative incidences and risks of i) all-cause death, ii) cause-specific death and iii) variceal bleeding or re-bleeding. To detect concentrations of aspirin and salicylic acid, we established a reliable liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method to measure aspirin and salicylic acid concentrations in fecal suspensions and plasma. Our study found that the plateau hypoxic environment caused a significant increase in Bacteroides in rat feces, while Corynebacterium, Prevotella, and Coprococcus were declined. In addition, compared with the plain group, the metabolic activity of fecal suspensions from the plateau group on aspirin was significantly reduced. More importantly, these changes in the intestinal microbiota led to increasing absorption of aspirin in the rats after rapidly ascent to the plateau, and a reduction in the pharmacodynamic index TXB2, which would possibly result in bleeding. In conclusion, our research provides new ideas for changes in plateau pharmacokinetics, and then guide the corresponding reduction in aspirin dose for the population quickly entering the plateau.BACKGROUND How dental education influences students' dental and dentofacial esthetic perception has been studied for some time, given the importance of esthetics in dentistry. Multiple factors contributed to undernutrition of HIV/AIDS patients and it need immediate identification and prompt action. The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional status of patients and identify factors associated with undernutrition among HIV/AIDS patients on follow-up care in Jimma medical center, Southwest Ethiopia. METHODS A cross-sectional study design was conducted from March-April 2016. Data were collected retrospectively from clinical records of HIV/AIDS patients enrolled for follow up care in ART clinic from June 2010 to January 2016. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify independent predictor of undernutrition. RESULTS Data of 1062 patients were included in the study. The prevalence of undernutrition (BMI less then 18.5 kg/m2) and overweight or obesity were 34% and 9%, respectively. Out of undernourished patients, severely malnourished patients (BMI less then 16 kg/m2) accounted of 9%.

We control for nonecologically relevant brain size development by comparing brain growth between two ecotypes of Pumpkinseed sunfish whose ecologies diverge over ontogeny from a shared juvenile niche. Brain size differs between ecotypes from their birth year onwards even though their foraging ecology appears to diverge at age 3.     Previous studies indicated variability in the prevalence of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DBMD) by racial/ethnic groups. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research network (MD STARnet) conducts muscular dystrophy surveillance in multiple geographic areas of the USA and continues to enroll new cases. This provides an opportunity to continue investigating differences in DBMD prevalence by race and ethnicity and to compare the impact of using varying approaches for estimating prevalence.

    In this single-blinded randomized controlled trial, 96 patients with nightmare disorder (idiopathic nightmares) from an outpatient clinic were randomly assigned to a single individual treatment session of rescripting, exposure, or positive imagery and 4 weeks of practice at home. The primary outcome was nightmare distress, and the secondary outcomes were nightmare frequency, nightmare effects, self-efficacy, and general psychopathology.

    Nightmare distress was reduced in all groups (imagery rescripting Cohen's d = -1.04, imaginal exposure d = -0.68, positive imagery d = -0.57), as were nightmare frequency, nightmare effects, and psychopathology. Self-efficacy was enhanced. No differential treatment effects were found on any primary or secondary measure. Treatment gains were not associated with demographic or disorder characteristics, baseline values, treatment credibility, or the number of practice sessions.

    Even short nightmare treatments are effective regardless of personal characteristics, and different interventions produce similar results.     New integrative hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) lesion pattern phenotypes have been proposed, an inflammatory phenotype (IP) and a follicular phenotype (FP). They are characterized by different lesion patterns, symptoms, and risks of disease progression.

    To evaluate whether lesion pattern phenotypes (1) have a different cardiovascular risk factor profile, and (2) are associated with a different therapeutic approach in the setting of an HS clinic.

    A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 233 patients with HS. They were classified according to lesion pattern phenotype criteria. Data regarding cardiovascular risk factors and treatment decisions were gathered.

    One hundred and seventeen HS patients (50.21%) were classified as FP and 112 (48.07%) as IP. IP was associated with more severe disease and greater impairment of quality of life. New integrative hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) lesion pattern phenotypes have been proposed, an inflammatory phenotype (IP) and a follicular phenotype (FP). They are characterized by different lesion patterns, symptoms, and risks of disease progression. To evaluate whether lesion pattern phenotypes (1) have a different cardiovascular risk factor profile, and (2) are associated with a different therapeutic approach in the setting of an HS clinic. The development of single-stranded oligonucleotide (oligo) probes simplifies the process of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and facilitates chromosomal identification in many species. Genome sequencing provides rich resources for the development of oligo probes. However, little progress has been made in peanut due to the lack of efficient chromosomal markers. Until now, the identification of chromosomal variants in peanut has remained a challenge.

    A total of 114 new oligo probes were developed based on the genome-wide tandem repeats (TRs) identified from the reference sequences of the peanut variety Tifrunner (AABB, 2n =4x = 40) and the diploid species Arachis ipaensis (BB, 2n =2x = 20). These oligo probes were classified into 28 types based on their positions and overlapping signals in chromosomes. For each type, a representative oligo was selected and modified with green fluorescein 6-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) or rols which can be used to distinguish the various chromosomes of the peanut. Physical mapping by FISH reveals the genomic organization of repetitive oligos in peanut chromosomes. A genome map-based karyotype was established and used for the identification of chromosome variations in peanut following comparisons with their reference sequence positions.

Here, using simulations from a food web model based on a community assembly process and a trait-based approach, we test how species biodiversity, food web structure and predator-prey interactions determine several ecosystem functions (biomass, metabolism, production, and productivity). Our results demonstrate that the relationship between species richnessvational studies. We recommend that studies investigating links between biodiversity and ecosystem functions should include metrics of dominance, species composition, trophic structure and possibly environmental trait space. Finally, comprehensive structural design engineering and some suggestions for fine modifications of electrode materials at the atomic and molecular levels are proposed to combine the advantages of supercapacitor- and battery-type materials for designing excellent electrode materials for AEESSs.We present the first investigation of excited state dynamics by resonant Auger-Meitner spectroscopy (also known as resonant Auger spectroscopy) using the nucleobase thymine as an example. Thymine is photoexcited in the UV and probed with X-ray photon energies at and below the oxygen K-edge. After initial photoexcitation to a ππ* excited state, thymine is known to undergo internal conversion to an nπ* excited state with a strong resonance at the oxygen K-edge, red-shifted from the ground state π* resonances of thymine (see our previous study Wolf, et al., Nat. Commun., 2017, 8, 29). We resolve and compare the Auger-Meitner electron spectra associated both with the excited state and ground state resonances, and distinguish participator and spectator decay contributions. Furthermore, we observe simultaneously with the decay of the nπ* state signatures the appearance of additional resonant Auger-Meitner contributions at photon energies between the nπ* state and the ground state resonances. We assign these contributions to population transfer from the nπ* state to a ππ* triplet state via intersystem crossing on the picosecond timescale based on simulations of the X-ray absorption spectra in the vibrationally hot triplet state. Moreover, we identify signatures from the initially excited ππ* singlet state which we have not observed in our previous study.The present study was designed to explore the beneficial mitochondrial effects and anti-oxidative activities of plant sterol ester of α-linolenic acid (PS-ALA) through AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using in vivo and in vitro models. The mitochondrial function was evaluated and the oxidative stress index was measured. The protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, and western blotting methods. The results showed that PS-ALA significantly suppressed NAFLD and alleviated steatosis in HepG2 cells induced by oleic acid (OA). In addition, PS-ALA promoted mitochondrial biogenesis, enhanced mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation capacity, improved mitochondrial dynamics, and restored mitochondrial membrane potential. Moreover, PS-ALA reduced reactive oxygen species production both in the liver tissue of HFD-fed **** and OA-loaded HepG2 cells. At the molecular level, PS-ALA accelerated the phosphorylation of AMPK and increased the protein expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ co-activator 1α (PGC-1α) and nuclear NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Furthermore, the stimulating effects of PS-ALA on the PGC-1α/Nrf1/Tfam pathway and Nrf2/HO-1 pathway as well as its mitochondrial biogenesis promotion effects and anti-oxidative activities were abrogated by the AMPK inhibitor in OA-treated HepG2 cells. In conclusion, the protective effects of PS-ALA on NAFLD appear to be associated with improving mitochondrial function and oxidative stress via activating AMPK signaling.We describe a study of the binding of anions to the surface of an octanuclear coordination cage HW, which carries a 16+ charge, in aqueous solution. Anionic aromatic fluorophores such as fluorescein (and derivatives) and hydroxypyrene tris-sulfonate (HPTS) bind strongly to an extent depending on their charge and hydrophobicity. Job plots indicated binding of up to six such fluorescent anions to HW, implying that one anion can bind to each face of the cubic cage, as previously demonstrated crystallographically with small anions such as halides. The quenching of these fluorophores on association with the cage provides the basis of a fluorescence displacement assay to investigate binding of other anions addition of analyte (organic or inorganic) anions in titration experiments to an HW/fluorescein combination results in displacement and restoration of the fluorescence from the bound fluorescein, allowing calculation of 1  1 binding constants for the HW/anion combinations. Relative binding affinities of simple anions for the cage surface can be approximately rationalised on the basis of ease of desolvation (e.g. F- less then Cl- less then Br-), electrostatic factors given the 16+ charge on the cage (monoanions less then dianions), and extent of hydrophobic surface. The interaction of a di-anionic pH indicator (bromocresol purple) with HW results in a pKa shift, with the surface-bound di-anionic form stabilised by approximately 1 pKa unit compared to the non-bound neutral form due to the charge on the cage.
