  • In 2018, 70% of global fatalities due to pneumonia occurred in about fifteen countries, with Tanzania being among the top eight countries contributing to these deaths. Environmental and individual factors contributing to these deaths may be multifaceted, but they have not yet been explored in Tanzania. Therefore, in this study, we explore the association between climate change and the occurrence of pneumonia in the Tanga Region, Tanzania. A time series study design was employed using meteorological and health data of the Tanga Region collected from January 2016 to December 2018 from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority and Health Management Information System, respectively. The generalized negative binomial regression technique was used to explore the associations between climate indicators (i.e., precipitation, humidity, and temperature) and the occurrence of pneumonia. The lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) fabricated with S-GDY as anode exhibit excellent performance, including the high specific capacity of 920 mA h g-1 and superior rate performances. The LIBs also show long-term cycling stability under the high current density. This result could potentially provide a modular design principle for the construction of high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.As novel applications of oxide semiconductors are realized, various structural devices and integrated circuits are being proposed, and the gate-overlay defect phenomenon is becoming more diverse in its effects. In the semiconductor layer, where the gate electrode is not overlapped, it is experimentally shown that a dual current is generated, and the results of 3D simulations confirm that the magnitude of the current increases as the parasitic current moves away from the gate electrode. The generation and path of the parasitic current are then represented visually through laser-enhanced 2D transport measurements; consequently, the flow of the dual current in the transistor is verified to be induced by the electrical potential imbalance in the semiconductor active layer, where the gate electrodes do not overlap.Considering the advent of antibiotic resistance, the study of bacterial metabolic behavior stimulated by novel antimicrobial agents becomes a relevant tool to elucidate involved adaptive pathways. Profiling of volatile metabolites was performed to monitor alterations of bacterial metabolism induced by biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs). Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis were isolated from pressure ulcers, and their cultures were prepared in the presence/absence of bio-AgNPs at 12.5, 25 and 50 µg mL-1. Headspace solid phase microextraction associated to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was the employed analytical platform. At the lower concentration level, the agent promoted positive modulation of products of fermentation routes and bioactive volatiles, indicating an attempt of bacteria to adapt to an ongoing suppression of cellular respiration. Augmented response of aldehydes and other possible products of lipid oxidative cleavage was noticed for increasing levels of bio-AgNPs. The greatest concentration of agent caused a reduction of 44 to 80% in the variety of compounds found in the control samples. Pathway analysis indicated overall inhibition of amino acids and fatty acids routes. The present assessment may provide a deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms of bio-AgNPs and how the metabolic response of bacteria is untangled.

Using cross-sectional analyses, we studied a subset of ROS 150 persons with or without diabetes, matched 11 by sex on age-at-death and education. We used ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and ex vivo stimulation with insulin, to document insulin signaling in postmortem midfrontal gyrus cortex tissue. Postmortem neuropathologic data identified cerebrovascular disease including brain infarcts, classified by number (as none for the reference; one; and more than one), size (gross and microscopic infarcts), and brain region/location (cortical and subcortical). Cerebral vessel pathologies were assessed, including severity oed with lower cognitive function and dementia, these data are relevant to better understanding the link between brain metabolism and brain function.

Therefore, this study aimed to assess time to early initiation of postnatal care and its predictors using the 2016 Ethiopian Demography and Health Survey (EDHS) datasets.

A total weighted sample of 6364 women of the 2016 EDHS datasets who gave birth within 2 years preceding the survey was used. Time to early initiation of the PNC visit was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier (K-M) method. Shared frailty model with baseline distributions (Weibull, Gompertz, exponential, log-logistic, and lognormal) and fr. Policy-makers and implementers should promote the utilization of antenatal care and institutional delivery using mass media to increase the continuum of maternity care. The government should also design a new approach to enhance the uptake of postnatal care services for poor households and to scale up the PNC services, including the different possibilities for women who give births at the health facilities and homes. Future researchers had better assess the capacity and accessibility of the local health systems, the level of decentralized decision making, common cultural practices, knowledge, attitude, and perception of mothers towards PNC service utilization.

This research aimed to investigate the effects of ribonucleotide reductase regulatory subunit M2 (RRM2) on malignant biological behaviors and activation of cGAS/STING pathway. We also explored the synergistic sensitization mechanisms of RRM2 and radiotherapy.

    Bioinformatic tools were used to evaluate the clinical significance of RRM2 in LUAD patients. The roles of RRM2 in malignant phenotype and DNA damage in LUAD cells were investigated with cell proliferation, colony formation, immunofluorescence, modified Boyden chamber and comet assays. The mouse models were used to evaluate the biological significance of RRM2 in vivo. Cytotoxic T cell infiltration was evaluated via flow cytometric analysis and immunohistochemistry staining in C57BL/6 ****. We also explored the synergistic effects of RRM2 silencing and radiation on LUAD cells with apoptosis assay and immunoblotting in vitro.

  • The majority of caregivers were responsible for providing some aspect of therapy. Caregivers reported "feeling stressed but able to deal with problems as they arise," and reported lower anxiety at follow-up. Caregivers reported that telehealth services were not meeting the needs of those with complex medical needs. Future surveys will assess if and how medical systems, educational programs, therapists, and caregivers adapt to the challenges arising during the COVID-19 pandemic.Bakground Laparoscopic techniques are now an integral part of the operative management of colorectal diseases. However, the specialist training that is required for this is not uniformly available. There is, therefore, a need for a structured competency-based training method so that trainees can navigate the learning curve safely. Aim. #link# To develop a modular structured training programme for laparoscopic colorectal surgery (LCS) with the capability of ensuring competency-based progression from a novice level to independent operator. Methodology. Over the past decade, we have developed a structured approach, starting with junior surgical trainees and progressing through to consultant level, with 7 clearly defined levels of progression attending courses to achieving a trainer status. This approach allows trainees to maintain objective records of their progression and trainers to provide targeted learning opportunities. It also allows for several trainees of varying experience to be trained during the same procedure. Conclusion. Our structured training module for junior surgeons has successfully produced several competent laparoscopic colorectal surgeons in the United Kingdom and around the world. This approach may also be adaptable to training in other laparoscopic procedures as the levels of progression are generic and not procedure-specific.
    Epidemiological data obtained during the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic suggests that COVID-19 mortality has specific age and gender associations. However, limited epidemiological studies explored specific populational risk factors, including comorbidities, and patient clinical characteristics. The main aim of our retrospective cohort study was to analyze associations between age, gender, and comorbidities in deceased COVID-19 patients.

    A retrospective cohort analysis was performed to assess significant risk factors in adult patients deceased from COVID-19 infection by evaluating Electronic Medical Records and post-mortem analysis in COVID-19 patients deceased between April 2020 to October 2020. All patients underwent post-mortem evaluation along with medical history analysis, including data on disease duration, hospitalization, and clinical peculiarities.

Yet, few studies characterize the relationship between violence and resilience. Identifying factors associated with resilience following exposure to violence can guide the development of strength-based interventions that change modifiable protective factors to bolster resilience. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey of AGYW aged 15 to 24 years in South Africa that took place from 2017 to 2018. This survey was part of a national evaluation of a South African combination HIV intervention for AGYW funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. A sample of 4,399 observations was achieved through a systematic random sampling frame of 35% of households in districts where AGYW were at highest risk for HIV, and where the intervention was implemented. Resilience was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Intimate partner and sexual violence were assessed using (a) an adapted version of a questionnaire from the World Health Organization's 2005 multicountry study on domestic violence against women, and (b) questions on lifetime experience of forced sex/rape. Nearly a third of AGYW (29.6%) reported intimate partner emotional and/or physical and/or sexual violence in the past year. Nearly a quarter of AGYW (23.74%) reported emotional violence, 17.48% reported physical violence, and 6.37% reported sexual violence from intimate partners. Nearly 8% (7.72%) reported forced sex/rape from intimate partners and/or nonpartners. More equitable gender norms, higher social support, and hazardous drinking were positively associated with higher resilience among those who experienced physical or sexual violence. This study addresses a gap in the resilience and violence literature. Future research should focus on the development of resilience-promoting interventions for individuals who have experienced violence.
    Periacetabular reconstruction after resection of primary bone tumour is a very demanding procedure. They are frequently associated with scarce functional results and a high rate of complications. We report a series of patients with periacetabular resections for primary bone tumours and reconstruction with a porous tantalum (PT) acetabular cup (AC).

    27 patients (median age 30 years) were included, being affected by primary bone tumours of the pelvis and treated with peri-acetabular resection and reconstruction with a PT AC. A sample of 4,399 observations was achieved through a systematic random sampling frame of 35% of households in districts where AGYW were at highest risk for HIV, and where the intervention was implemented. Resilience was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Intimate partner and sexual violence were assessed using (a) an adapted version of a questionnaire from the World Health Organization's 2005 multicountry study on domestic violence against women, and (b) questions on lifetime experience of forced sex/rape. We analyzed here the ConsExpo evaporation model, which is characterized by a set of nonlinear differential equations only solvable by numerical means. It shows qualitatively different behavior for different parameters, but the exact conditions remain unclear. This article presents an approximate analytical solution of the ConsExpo evaporation model, derived by using a specific linearization of the nonlinear equations valid for small concentrations. From this solution, three different boundary cases or regimes are found quick release, near equilibrium, and ventilation driven regime. The effect of water infusions of marjoram, oregano, basil, and thyme on the phenolic content, antioxidant potential, and the microbiological and consumer quality of stored mung bean sprouts was studied. Compared to the control, the treatments increased total phenolic content. The highest amounts were determined in sprouts soaked in the thyme extract (6.8 mg/g d.m.). #link# The infusions also inhibited the activity of enzymes utilizing phenolics, and marjoram and oregano were found to be the most effective. All the natural extracts effectively reduced the growth of total mesophilic bacteria, coliforms, and molds (they were more effective than ascorbic and kojic acids).   • Noroviruses, members of the Caliciviridae family, are the major cause of epidemic gastroenteritis in humans, causing ∼20 million cases annually. These plus-strand RNA viruses have T=3 icosahedral protein capsids with 90 pronounced protruding (P) domain dimers to which antibodies and cellular receptors bind. In the case of mouse norovirus (MNV), bile salts have been shown to enhance receptor (CD300lf) binding to the P domain. We demonstrated previously that the P domains of several genotypes are markedly flexible and "float" over the shell, but the role of this flexibility was unclear. Recently, we demonstrated that bile causes a 90° rotation and collapse of the P domain onto the shell surface. Since bile binds distally to the P-shell interface, it was not at all clear how it could cause such dramatic changes. Here, we present the near-atomic resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of the MNV protruding domain complexed with a neutralizing Fab. On the basis of previous results, we show here thaow that bile causes two sets of changes. First, bile causes allosteric conformational changes in the epitopes at the top of the P domain that block antibody binding. Second, bile causes the P domain dimer subunits to rotate relative to each other, causing a contraction of the P domain that buries epitopes at the base of the P and shell domains. The presence of DVGs was associated with specimens containing higher viral loads but never reached clonality, consistent with a model of parasitized replication. These DVGs persisted during clinical infection as evidenced in two separate pairs of samples containing BK virus collected from the same individual up to 302 days apart.

The items of the side effects included swelling, redness, itching, fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, coughing, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, breathlessness, joint pain, fainted, anaphylactic reaction, itch, and swollen lymph nodes. In this survey data, we collected a total of 840 responses. The survey data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis. Data analysis was performed using IBM version 25.0.
    Large-animal models such as sheep for facial nerve regeneration research have not yet been established because of the lack of methods for assessing the electrophysiological function of regenerated nerves. In this study, we developed a percutaneous measurement method for the evoked compound muscle action potential (CMAP) of the facial nerve in sheep.

    Six 3-year-old castrated male Corriedale sheep were used in this study. Under general anesthesia, an anatomical exploration was performed to identify the course of the buccal branch of the facial nerve and its innervating muscles on one side, followed by the application of surface stimulating electrodes to the contralateral side of the face along the course of the buccal branch of the facial nerve to obtain CMAP measurements of the nasolabial levator muscle.

    Percutaneous CMAP measurements of the nasolabial levator muscle could be obtained in all animals by placing stimulating electrodes 1cm apart on the line coinciding with the course of the buccal branch of the facial nerve revealed by the preceding anatomical exploration. Mean values for electrophysiological parameters were amplitude 4.7±0.7mV, duration 2.1±0.6ms, and latency 3.6±0.4ms.

The infected sample of Epidendrum veroscriptum was collected in a nursery in Lagunillas, municipality of Zihuateutla, Edo. Puebla. Mites gathered on this plant were analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy, which consistently indicated the presence of adults of the species Brevipalpus californicus, the common vector of OFV. Viral identification was based on symptoms, cytopathology, and reverse transcriptase-PCR/sequencing of genome fragments of the RNA1 and 2 molecules. Since isolates of OFV causing citrus leprosis have been previously detected in the Mexican states of Chiapas, Querétaro, and Jalisco, we promote a pertinent discussion and thought-provoking questions regarding the epidemiology and putative evolution of OFV.Iranian johnsongrass mosaic virus (IJMV, genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae) is one of the most prevalent viruses causing maize mosaic disease in Iran. In this study, the complete genomes (9,618 and 9,543 nucleotides) of two highly divergent IJMV isolates (Maz2 and Maz3) were obtained from the metagenomic analysis of Zea mays RNAs using Illumina sequencing. The genome contained a single open reading frame (9,165 nucleotides) encoding a polyprotein of 3,054 amino acids, flanked by a 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of 216 and 143 nucleotides and a 3'-UTR of 237 and 235 nucleotides. A comparative analysis of the complete genome showed that IJMV-Maz2 and Maz3 had 85.99% nucleotide and 94.56% amino acid sequence identity with each other and shared 84.87-88.74% nt and 94.24-96.17% aa identity with those of two other IJMV isolates available in the GenBank. In this study, the complete genomes (9,618 and 9,543 nucleotides) of two highly divergent IJMV isolates (Maz2 and Maz3) were obtained from the metagenomic analysis of Zea mays RNAs using Illumina sequencing. The genome contained a single open reading frame (9,165 nucleotides) encoding a polyprotein of 3,054 amino acids, flanked by a 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of 216 and 143 nucleotides and a 3'-UTR of 237 and 235 nucleotides. A comparative analysis of the complete genome showed that IJMV-Maz2 and Maz3 had 85.99% nucleotide and 94.56% amino acid sequence identity with each other and shared 84.87-88.74% nt and 94.24-96.17% aa identity with those of two other IJMV isolates available in the GenBank. People living with NCDs, and particularly those living with cardiovascular disease (CVD), are at higher risk of severe symptoms and death from COVID-19. As a result, the urgent need for policy measures to protect cardiovascular health is more apparent than ever. One example of "low-hanging fruit" in the prevention of CVD is the elimination of industrially-produced trans fatty acids (iTFA). Their removal from the global food supply could prevent up to 17 million deaths by 2040 and would be the first time an NCD risk factor has been eliminated.Increasing evidence supports a role of proximal tubular (PT) injury in the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), in patients with or without proteinuria. Research on the mechanisms of the PT injury in DKD could help us to identify potential new biomarkers and drug targets for DKD. A high glucose transport state and mismatched local hypoxia in the PT of diabetes patients may be the initiating factors causing PT injury. Other mechanism such as mitochondrial dysfunction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction, ER stress, and deficiency of autophagy interact with each other leading to more PT injury by forming a vicious circle. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and diversity of the GIP of Semnopithecus vetulus in Sri Lanka from December 2017 to April 2019. Fresh fecal samples (N = 78) were collected and analyzed using fecal floatation technique and direct iodine mounts. Of these, 55% contained at least one species of GIP (helminths N = 18 protozoans N = 30). Multiple infections were recorded in 12% of the samples testing positive for parasites. The most prevalent helminth was Trichuris trichiura (15%). A significant relationship was found between the prevalence of T. trichiura and troop size. Between April 8 and 30 (2020) and through an online survey, 895 Canadian adolescents (74% girls) aged between 12 and 17 years (M = 14.7) were recruited. Path analysis was performed to identify significant associations between sociodemographic characteristics, confinement habits, support variables, and internalized symptoms. Independent samples t-tests and invariance tests were conducted to compare boys and girls. Results suggest that certain confinement habits (time spent using cellphones, doing sports and schoolwork, finding a new hobby) and support variables (parents working outside the home) were significantly and negatively associated with internalized symptoms. Regarding the sex differences, girls used their cellphones more and invariance test results showed that all associations between predictors and symptoms were statistically similar for boys and girls. This study's results help understand better adolescents' experience in confinement. It sheds light on the habits likely to characterize those who are less at risk of experiencing distress, making it possible to better support adolescents during this challenging period.
    During the last decade, the reportedprevalence of sleep-disordered breathing in adults has been rapidly increasing. Therefore, automatic methods of sleep assessment are of particular interest. In a framework of translational neuroscience, this study introduces a reliable automatic detection system of behavioral sleep in laboratory rats based on the signal recorded at the cortical surface without requiring electromyography.

    Experimental data were obtained in 16 adult male WAG/Rij rats at the age of 9 months. Electrocorticographic signals (ECoG) were recorded in freely moving rats during the entire day (22.5 ± 2.2 h). Automatic wavelet-based assessment of behavioral sleep (BS) was proposed. The performance of this wavelet-based method was validated in a group of rats with genetic predisposition to absence epilepsy (n=16) based on visual analysis of their behavior in simultaneously recorded video.

The head and neck injury potential is correlated with the awareness, level of muscle activation, and posture changes at the time of the perturbation. Environmental acoustic stimuli or a warning system can influence muscle activation and posture during a head perturbation. In this study, different acoustic stimuli, including Non-Directional, Directional, and Startle, were provided 1000 ms before a head impact, and the amplitude and timing of cervical muscle electromyographic (EMG) data were characterized based on the type of warning. The startle warning resulted in 49% faster and 80% greater EMG amplitude compared to the Directional and Non-Directional warnings after warning and before the impact. The post-impact peak EMG amplitudes in Unwarned trials were lower by 18 and 21% in the retraction and rebound muscle groups, respectively, compared to any of the warned conditions.

  • Studying the interactions of biopolymers like polysaccharides and proteins is quite important mainly due to the wide number of applications such as the stabilization and encapsulation of active compounds in complex systems. Complexation takes place when materials like proteins and polysaccharides are blended to promote the entrapment of active compounds. The interaction forces between the charged groups in the polymeric chains allow the miscibility of the components in the complex system. Understanding the interactions taking place between the polymers as well as between the wall material and the active compound is important when designing delivery systems. However, some features of the biopolymers like structure, functional groups, or electrical charge as well as extrinsic parameters like pH or ratios might affect the structure and the performance of the complex system when used in encapsulation applications. This work summarizes the recent progress of the polysaccharide/protein complexes for encapsulation and the influence of the pH on the structural modifications during the complexation process.The epidemiology of cognitive development is an approach essentially based on large observational studies, which examines individual differences in cognitive abilities throughout childhood and their determinants. Although different in terms of methodology and main interests from developmental psychology, cognitive epidemiology offers complementary viewpoints on cognitive development and addresses fundamental research questions of interest to developmental psychologists. The present paper depicts the contributions of the epidemiological approach to the field of cognitive development and highlights the methodological advances that have made such contributions possible. We discuss the stability and developmental trajectories of cognitive functions, their main predictors, the complex interplay between environmental and genetic predictors, and the relationships between the different domains of cognition from birth to adulthood.Characterizations of the tinnitus sound percept are always based on a subjective description by the person affected. This study investigates the effect of sound stimulation on both tinnitus and hyperacusis in the same patients. Two distinct series of tinnitus participants were tested one with normal or near-normal hearing (n=16) and one with hearing loss (n=14). A broadband noise shaped to cover most of the tinnitus frequency spectrum was delivered through hearing aids using the noise generator feature (no amplification) and verified through real-ear measurements. Participants received sound stimulation for 3 weeks and were tested before (at baseline), then after 1 week and at the end of the 3 weeks of sound stimulation. There was also a 1-month follow-up after the end of the stimulation pticipants with normal/near-normal hearing thresholds. Our study partly supports the central gain hypothesis by showing synchronous modulation of hyperacusis and tinnitus loudness. It also shows beneficial effects of acoustic stimulation in some tinnitus individuals, in particular those with normal or near-normal hearing, while highlighting the importance of a careful fitting of sound generators to prevent increase. Furthermore, they exhibited decreased fractional anisotropy in the left arcuate fasciculus, as well as the left and right acoustic radiation tracts.
