Substance P neuropeptide is here reported to self-assemble into well-defined semi-flexible nanotubes. Using a blend of synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy and other biophysical techniques, the natural peptide is shown to self-assemble into monodisperse 6 nm wide nanotubes, which can closely associate into nano-arrays with nematic properties. Using simple protocols, the nanotubes could be precipitated or mineralised while conserving their dimensions and core-shell morphology. Our discovery expands the small number of available monodisperse peptide nanotube systems for nanotechnology, beyond direct relevance to biologically functional peptide nanostructures since the substance P nanotubes are fundamentally different from typical amyloid fibrils.The design and testing of integrated colorimetric microarray immunochips (immuno-microarrays) are reported for the quantitation and direct visual determination of multiple illicit drugs (e.g., morphine, cocaine and amphetamine) in body fluids. Such an immuno-microarray platform utilizes a competitive immunoassay format, which is based on silver staining for quantitative detection and multicolor staining for direct visualization (i.e., qualitative identification) of analytes present in the sample. Under optimized conditions, the dynamic response ranges of 3.7-1000, 1.1-300 and 1.5-300 ng mL-1 were achieved for amphetamine, cocaine, and morphine, respectively, which are wider towards low concentrations than those of standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests. The limits of detection (LODs) for morphine, cocaine, and amphetamine were determined to be 1.5 ± 0.1, 1.1 ± 0.1 and 3.7 ± 0.2 ng mL-1, respectively in oral fluids, which meet government regulations for law enforcement. This review endeavors to summarize the recent advances of RE-CNDs, including their interaction mechanisms, general synthetic strategies and applications in fluorescence, biosensing and multi-modal biomedical imaging. Finally, we present the current challenges and the possible application perspectives of newly developed RE-CND materials. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the stomach with lymph node metastasis is a rare condition, and few cases have been treated by gastrectomy and systematic lymph node dissection.
We report the case of a patient who was treated by local resection with laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery and lymph node pick-up resection. A 73-year-old woman presented with gastric submucosal tumor and swollen lymph node. The submucosal tumor was 30 mm in size. After surgery, the tumor was confirmed to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor by immunostaining. No recurrence was noted 36 months following the surgery.
Laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery allows minimal resection because the exact resection margin can be identified. Therefore, endoscopy is a useful aid in the treatment of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor. The MIB-1 index of metastatic lymph node was lower than that of a primary lesion; hence, the prognosis might not depend on lymph node metastasis.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) or megacolon congenital is the most common congenital intestinal motility disorder and characterized by the absence of ganglion cells (aganglionosis) in the myenteric plexus and submucosa of the distal intestine.
This study reports three cases of adult HSCR, with all young female patients who underwent colostomy for obstructive ileus. The chosen definitive therapies were Duhamel pull-through procedure combined with a temporary coloanal stump.
The three patients underwent Duhamel pull-through procedure with temporary anal stump in conjunction with stoma reversal. The temporary anal stumps were removed within 1-2 weeks after pull-through procedure. All patients were discharged from the hospital and underwent routine follow-up. All patients had fecal incontinence in early follow-up which resolved shortly afterwards. Long term follow-up showed normal intestinal functions and good cosmetic results.

After an extensive search of the literature, we believe that this is the first case to be managed via laparoscopic Trans Abdominal Pre-Peritoneal Repair and would like to highlight the technical details of the laparoscopic procedure and is presented in line with SCARE 2018 Guidelines [1].
A 60-year-old male presented with left inguinal hernia. He also complained of an increase in frequency of micturition, with an occasional radiating pain from loin to the groin. Imaging revealed the left ureter coursing into the left inguinal canal, descending into the scrotum, and looping **** to enter the bladder with mild hydroureteronephrosis. Patient underwent a laparoscopic repair of the inguinal hernia with reduction of ureter under ureteroscope guidance and stent placement.

This indicates that divergent recovery trajectories may be triggered concurrently across large spatial scales favorable conditions in the SW can correspond to drought in the NR that inhibits ponderosa pine establishment, and vice versa. We introduce the transcorrelated Density Matrix Renormalization Group (tcDMRG) theory for the efficient approximation of the energy for strongly correlated systems. tcDMRG encodes the wave function as a product of a fixed Jastrow or Gutzwiller correlator and a matrix product state. The latter is optimized by applying the imaginary-time variant of time-dependent (TD) DMRG to the non-Hermitian transcorrelated Hamiltonian. We demonstrate the efficiency of tcDMRG with the example of the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, a notoriously difficult target for the DMRG algorithm, for different sizes, occupation numbers, and interaction strengths. We demonstrate fast energy convergence of tcDMRG, which indicates that tcDMRG could increase the efficiency of standard DMRG beyond quasi-monodimensional systems and provides a generally powerful approach toward the dynamic correlation problem of DMRG.Methylglyoxal (MG)-an atmospherically important α-dicarbonyl implicated in aqueous-phase secondary organic aerosol formation-is known to be surface-active. The presence of NaCl is found to enhance MG's surface activity but not to the extent that water is fully excluded from the interface. Perturbations in the interfacial water structure are attributed to shifts in MG's hydration equilibrium at higher ionic strengths. Evidence of surface-active MG oligomer species is presented, but such oligomers are not thought to contribute significantly to the interfacial population. This work builds on the published studies on MG in pure water and gives insight into the interface's perturbation by NaCl, which has important implications for understanding MG's atmospheric fate.Using molecular beam cooled samples and quantum state-selective detection, we observe v = 0 → 1 vibrational transitions when HCl (v = 0) collides with an Ag(111) surface and derive both the incidence energy and surface temperature dependence of the transition probability. Our observations reveal that both electronically adiabatic and non-adiabatic mechanisms are at play in this inelastic process. A comparison to other systems shows similarities and trends that are consistent with an electron transfer mechanism forming a transient HCl-. For example, the electronically nonadiabatic coupling is stronger than for HCl scattering from Au, where the solid's work function is higher. HCl differs from other systems in that dissociation is possible over a low barrier. Vibrationally inelastic v = 1 → 2 transitions could not be seen when HCl (v = 1) collides with an Ag(111) surface. We suggest that scattering events, where HCl (v = 1) is subject to dynamical influences that increase its vibrational energy, lead efficiently to dissociation before the HCl (v = 2) molecule can escape the surface. Here, we demonstrate that interleukin-1β (IL-1β) contributes to the γ-ionizing radiation (IR)-induced increase of migration/invasion in A549 lung cancer cells, and that this occurs via RIP1 upregulation. We initially observed that the protein expression and secreted concentration of IL-1β were increased upon exposure of A549 cells to IR. We then demonstrated that IR-induced IL-1β is located downstream of the NF-κB-RIP1 signaling pathway. Treatments with siRNA and specific pharmaceutical inhibitors of RIP1 and NF-κB suppressed the IR-induced increases in the protein expression and secreted concentration of IL-1β. IL-1Ra, an antagonist of IL-1β, treatment suppressed the IR-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and IR-induced invasion/migration in vitro. These results suggest that IL-1β could regulate IR-induced EMT. We also found that IR could induce the expression of IL-1β expression in vivo and that of IL-1 receptor (R) I/II in vitro and in vivo. The IR-induced increases in the protein levels of IL-1 RI/II and IL-1β suggest that an autocrine loop between IL-1β and IL-1 RI/II might play important roles in IR-induced EMT and migration/invasion. The college women in this study often conflated or confused HPV and HIV and revealed misperceptions about the severity and prevalence of HPV and HIV.

This study explored the associations among sexual orientation disclosure, health care access and health care utilisation among BSMM in the Deep South.
Secondary analysis of existing data of a population-based study in Jackson, Mississippi, and Atlanta, Georgia, was conducted among 386 BSMM. Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) between sexual orientation disclosure to healthcare providers, health care access and health care utilisation.

Free HBV vaccination is available for population groups at higher risk of infection, including men who have sex with men (MSM). Identifying correlates of HBV vaccination among MSM can guide the development of health promotion interventions to increase coverage of HBV vaccination.
We assessed factors associated with the HBV vaccination status of 4270 MSM in the Netherlands. Data were collected through the 2018 online Men & Sexuality survey.
Multinomial regression analysis showed that lower education level, having never tested for HIV, not recently diagnosed with a sexually transmissible infection, recently having had sex abroad and unknown HBV testing status were associated with higher odds of being unvaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated. Living in Amsterdam and testing HBV negative were associated with lower odds of being unvaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated. Age (25-39 years vs younger ages), living in Amsterdam and using pre-exposure prophylaxis decreased the odds to be partly vaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated; having a migration background increased these odds.
HBV vaccination rates among MSM will not reduce HBV transmission to zero. HBV promotion should focus on MSM outside of Amsterdam who are likely less connected with sexual health services and may be at lower (perceived) risk. Views regarding the influence of social media were varied, but most believed social media relationship portrayals had some level of influence on young people's relationship views; some participants believed this occurred regardless of awareness of the incompleteness of the online portrayal.
Here, we demonstrate that interleukin-1β (IL-1β) contributes to the γ-ionizing radiation (IR)-induced increase of migration/invasion in A549 lung cancer cells, and that this occurs via RIP1 upregulation. We initially observed that the protein expression and secreted concentration of IL-1β were increased upon exposure of A549 cells to IR. We then demonstrated that IR-induced IL-1β is located downstream of the NF-κB-RIP1 signaling pathway. Treatments with siRNA and specific pharmaceutical inhibitors of RIP1 and NF-κB suppressed the IR-induced increases in the protein expression and secreted concentration of IL-1β. IL-1Ra, an antagonist of IL-1β, treatment suppressed the IR-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and IR-induced invasion/migration in vitro. These results suggest that IL-1β could regulate IR-induced EMT. We also found that IR could induce the expression of IL-1β expression in vivo and that of IL-1 receptor (R) I/II in vitro and in vivo. The IR-induced increases in the protein levels of IL-1 RI/II and IL-1β suggest that an autocrine loop between IL-1β and IL-1 RI/II might play important roles in IR-induced EMT and migration/invasion. This study explored the associations among sexual orientation disclosure, health care access and health care utilisation among BSMM in the Deep South. Secondary analysis of existing data of a population-based study in Jackson, Mississippi, and Atlanta, Georgia, was conducted among 386 BSMM. Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) between sexual orientation disclosure to healthcare providers, health care access and health care utilisation. Multinomial regression analysis showed that lower education level, having never tested for HIV, not recently diagnosed with a sexually transmissible infection, recently having had sex abroad and unknown HBV testing status were associated with higher odds of being unvaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated. Living in Amsterdam and testing HBV negative were associated with lower odds of being unvaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated. Age (25-39 years vs younger ages), living in Amsterdam and using pre-exposure prophylaxis decreased the odds to be partly vaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated; having a migration background increased these odds. The safety assessment of the AuNPs demonstrated that overall they present low toxicity towards hepatic cells. Among all the tested AuNPs, the smaller 15 nm spheres displayed the highest toxicity. The toxicological effect was capping, size and cell-type dependent with citrate-capping more toxic than MUA (PRH with FBS), the 15 nm AuNPs more toxic than 60 nm counterparts and PRH more sensitive, as compared to the HepaRG cells. In this proof of concept study, we used eight reference compounds (valproic acid, all-trans-retinoic acid, thalidomide, methotrexate, hydroxyurea, ascorbic acid, penicillin G and ibuprofen) to test the technical performance of the assay (readout stability) in concentration-response and time-course experiments. We also found that each compound affected marker gene expression in a different way. Various forms of data analysis identified 19 out of 96 early developmental genes as potential predictive markers for teratogenicity. Machine-learning models were run to exemplify how the assay will be developed further. The preliminary results from these analyses suggest that the assay could be suitable for the pre-screening of candidate pharmaceutical compounds. Cells expressed the definitive endoderm markers SRY-box transcription factor 17 and transcription factor GATA-4 to different extents along the gradient, indicating a density-dependent cell response to Activin A. In both the gradient and the classic differentiation setups, the protein expression increased from days 1 to 5, but a significant increase already on day 3 was found only in the gradient-based setup. By utilizing the gradient technology to present the right amount of active biomolecules to cells in vitro, we were able to find an optimal setting for differentiation into definitive endoderm.

A total of 13 vaginal deliveries and 5 caesarean section patients received the BCAC procedure to stop bleeding. During the procedure, the anterior and posterior walls of the cervical apex were clamped using toothless ovum forceps from the left and right side. The procedure was terminated when the bleeding had nearly stopped without clamping. The success rate of the procedure was 94.4% (17/18) overall, and 92.3% for vaginal delivery and 100% in caesarean section patients. Only one case of vaginal delivery did we resort to exploratory laparotomy and hysterectomy as amniotic fluid embolism occurred. The time spent on the procedure was 2-4 min for vaginal delivery cases and 5-7 min for caesarean section patients. The blood loss reduced significantly after the proceeduce the necessity for UAE and balloon tamponade. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? BCAC can be used after the failure of regular first line therapy for postpartum haemorrhage.
Neonatal mortality is a global public health problem disproportionally high in developing country including Ethiopia. Hypothermia plays a significant role in neonatal mortality. This study was conducted to identify determinants of neonatal hypothermia among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of public hospitals.
Institutional based unmatched case-control study was conducted in Bahir Dar town public hospitals among neonates admitted in the NICUs in 2019. A total of 387 participants were included in the study. Pretested, structured questionnaire, and data extraction checklist were used to collect results. Data analysis was done by using Stata version 14 .

During the procedure, the anterior and posterior walls of the cervical apex were clamped using toothless ovum forceps from the left and right side. The procedure was terminated when the bleeding had nearly stopped without clamping. The success rate of the procedure was 94.4% (17/18) overall, and 92.3% for vaginal delivery and 100% in caesarean section patients. Only one case of vaginal delivery did we resort to exploratory laparotomy and hysterectomy as amniotic fluid embolism occurred. The time spent on the procedure was 2-4 min for vaginal delivery cases and 5-7 min for caesarean section patients. This study was conducted to identify determinants of neonatal hypothermia among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of public hospitals. Institutional based unmatched case-control study was conducted in Bahir Dar town public hospitals among neonates admitted in the NICUs in 2019. A total of 387 participants were included in the study. Pretested, structured questionnaire, and data extraction checklist were used to collect results. Data analysis was done by using Stata version 14 . Low birth weight (adjusted odd ratio (AOR)=3.01, 95%CI 1.50-5.58), nighttime delivery (AOR = 1.90, 95%CI 1.13-3.13), lack skin to skin contact (AOR = 2.43, 95%CI 1.42-4.16), delayed initiation of breast feeding (AOR = 2.24, 95%CI 1.30-3.88), not wearing cape (AOR = 1.87, 95%CI 1.07-3.26), and low Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration (APGAR) score (AOR = 2.17, 95%CI 1.15-4.10) were determinant variables of the neonatal hypothermia. We describe two cases of increased pancreatic enzyme levels after intragastric balloon (IGB) placement possibly related to extrinsic pancreatic duct compression, followed by a short review of the literature. Case 1 is the first, to our knowledge, of a patient with asymptomatic increase of pancreatic enzymes due to pancreatic duct compression, with unknown clinical significance. We hypothesize that this finding maybe can be relatively common in IGB users and almost certainly an important risk factor for the development of acute pancreatitis (AP). On the other hand, case 2 reports an AP that occurred one day after IGB placement, presented with nausea and vomiting, making AP a differential diagnosis of initial IGB intolerance. Combining advanced neuroimaging with novel computational methods in network science and machine learning has led to increasingly meaningful descriptions of structure and function in both the normal and the abnormal brain, thereby contributing significantly to our understanding of psychiatric disorders as circuit dysfunctions. Despite its marked potential for psychiatric care, this approach has not yet extended beyond the research setting to any clinically useful applications. Here we review current developments in the study of neuroimaging data using network models and machine learning methods, with a focus on their promise in offering a framework for clinical translation. We discuss 3 potential contributions of these methods to psychiatric care 1) a better understanding of psychopathology beyond current diagnostic boundaries; 2) individualized prediction of treatment response and prognosis; and 3) formal theories to guide the development of novel interventions. Finally, we highlight current obstacles and sketch a forward-looking perspective of how the application of machine learning and network modeling methods should proceed to accelerate their potential transformation of clinically useful tools. While robust scientific evidences highlight the role of exercise-associated redox modifications in modulating gene expression through the genetic machinery, the understanding of their specific impact on epigenomic profile is still at an early stage. This review will provide an overview of the role of ROS and RNS in modulating the epigenetic landscape in the context of exercise-related adaptations. Antioxidant supplements are commonly consumed by endurance athletes to minimize exercise-induced oxidative stress, with the intention of enhancing recovery and improving performance. Salmonella pathogenicity islands 1 and 2 (SPI-1 and SPI-2) contribute to invading into host cellular cytosol, residing in Salmonella-containing vacuoles for intracellular survival, and inducing cellular apoptosis. This study aimed to better understand the mechanism underlying apoptosis in Salmonella-infected macrophages. METHODS S. Typhimurium SL1344 was used to evaluate extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis pathways in THP-1 monocyte-derived macrophages in response to Salmonella infection. RESULTS Activated caspase-3-induced apoptosis pathways, including extrinsic (caspase-8-mediated) and intrinsic (caspase-9-mediated) pathways, in Salmonella-infected macrophages were verified. THP-1 cells with dysfunction of TLR-4 and TLR-5 and Salmonella SPI-1 and SPI-2 mutants were constructed to identify the roles of the genes associated with programmed cell death in the macrophages. Caspase-3 activation in THP-1 macrophages was induced by Salmonella through TLR-4 and TLR-5 signaling pathways. We also identified that SPI-1 structure protein PrgH and effectors SipB and SipD, but not SPI-2 structure protein SsaV, could induce apoptosis via caspase-3 activation and reduce the secretion of inflammation marker TNF-α in the Salmonella-infected cells. The two effectors also reduced the translocation of the p65 subunit of NF-κB into the nucleus and the expression of TNF-α, and then inflammation was diminished. CONCLUSION Non-typhoid Salmonella induced apoptosis of macrophages and thereby reduced inflammatory cytokine production through the expression of SPI-1. This mechanism in host-pathogen interaction may explain why Salmonella usually manifests as occult bacteremia with less systemic inflammatory response syndrome in the bloodstream infection of children. Several strands of prior work have evaluated students' study strategies and learning activities. In this work, we focus on integrating two of those strands. One has focused on student self-reports of their study practices from a cognitive psychology perspective. The other has focused on classifying student learning activities from a learning sciences perspective using the Interactive, Constructive, Active, and Passive (ICAP) framework (Chi & Wylie, 2014). The current study aims to integrate these two strands of research by testing the implications of the ICAP framework with students' self-reports in a classroom context. Another goal was to address the measurement limitations of the metacognitive study strategy literature by using assessment-specific self-reports with both closed and open-ended questions. Across three noncumulative exams, 342 undergraduates self-reported their study practices before each exam. We then categorized their strategies as either active or constructive in alignment with the ICAP framework. Next, we examined whether these strategies were related to each other and then tested the hypothesis that constructive strategies would be positively associated with better exam performance than active strategies. Students reported using a variety of study practices in which a few active strategies were related to constructive strategies, but constructive strategies were more likely to be related to each other. Lastly, supporting the ICAP framework, many of the constructive strategies were positively related to exam performance, whereas the active strategies were not. This work provides insight into the measurement of students' study strategies and their relations to each other and learning outcomes.This study examines breast and cervical cancer screening uptake in a cancer education and patient navigation (PN) program for residents of rural and border counties in Texas by level of participation (education only, PN only, or education and PN). Data collected from March 1, 2012, to November 5, 2016, included 6663 follow-up surveys from participants aged 21-74. Logistic regression models assessed program participation on the odds of completing breast or cervical cancer screening. For women aged 40-74 years (N = 4942; mean age = 52 years), 58.4% reported a mammogram within 6 months on average from initial contact. In the breast cancer screening model, women who only received PN (OR 6.06, CI 4.87-7.53) or who participated in both the education plus PN program (OR 3.33, CI 2.77-4.02) had higher odds of mammogram screening compared to women who only received education. For women aged 21-64 years (N = 6169; mean age = 46 years), 37.7% received a Papanicolaou (Pap) test within 6 months on average from initial contact. In the Pap screening model, both education and PN (OR 3.23, CI 2.66-3.91) and PN only (OR 2.35, CI 1.88-2.93) groups had higher odds of screening for cervical cancer compared to those only receiving education. Graphed predicted probabilities examined significant interactions between race/ethnicity/language and program participation (P less then 0.0001) for both screenings. PN, solely or in combination with education, is an effective strategy to increase screening for breast and cervical cancer, beyond educational outreach efforts alone, among un-/underserved, racially/ethnically diverse women in rural and border Texas counties.

Sixth-year medical students (N = 80) were randomly assigned to one of four groups that differed with regard to how the case histories were delivered to them (chronological order versus key information mentioned first) and direction of information exchange (unidirectional versus a clarifying dialogue). The receivers of the handover were asked to write a report of the cases and suggest the best diagnosis. Dependent variables were information quality of the written report (Information score), quality of the diagnosis (Diagnostic accuracy score) and the time it took to deliver the written handover case report (Handover report duration). Seen through the lens of cognitive load theory, allowing a clarifying dialogue at handover, and thus optimizing the germane cognitive load, significantly increased the Information score (p less then 0.0005), Diagnostic accuracy score ( less then 0.05) and Handover report duration (p less then 0.001).

Sixth-year medical students (N = 80) were randomly assigned to one of four groups that differed with regard to how the case histories were delivered to them (chronological order versus key information mentioned first) and direction of information exchange (unidirectional versus a clarifying dialogue). The receivers of the handover were asked to write a report of the cases and suggest the best diagnosis. Furthermore, gene families of G. elata were identified by tools including HMMER, iTAK, PfamScan, and InParanoid. Finally, we constructed a gene functional analysis platform for G. elata . In our platform, we introduced functional analysis tools such as BLAST, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), and cis-elements (motif) enrichment analysis tool. De novo mutations in the APC gene are responsible for 20-30% of FAP cases. In the presence of the characteristic RPE lesions, it is important to send the patient for work up of FAP even in the absence of family history of FAP.
The interest in the use of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) as an intervention to prevent and treat sarcopenia has increased over recent years. The purpose of this review is to explore recent evidence pertaining to the mechanism of action of HMB and how this may influence changes in lean mass and strength in older persons who are both hospitalized and living in the community.
No new studies have been published over the last 2 years investigating the effect of HMB in older persons who are hospitalized, aside from one posthoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial exploring the effect of a high protein oral nutrition supplement containing HMB on handgrip strength and nutritional status. Three studies recruiting community-dwelling older adults have been published, but results are influenced by suboptimal methodological quality.

Osteosarcopenia (the joint loss of bone density and muscle mass and function) is an emerging geriatric syndrome, which associates with poor health outcomes. Several nutrients including protein, vitamin D and calcium interact (directly or through absorption properties) to regulate muscle and bone metabolism. We provided an update on the efficacy of these nutrients on musculoskeletal outcomes in older adults with, or at risk of, osteosarcopenia.
Randomized trials show that correcting vitamin D and calcium deficiencies to meet the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) increases bone density and reduces fracture (but not falls) risk. Supplementing above the RDA with protein supports gains in lean mass and lumbar-spine bone density; however, there is inconclusive evidence for muscle strength, physical function or other bone density sites. A likely explanation for this relates to the significant heterogeneity between trials regarding protein dose, type and timing, as well as baseline protein intake. Further high-quality trials are needed in older osteosarcopenic adults to investigate the effects of protein (while correcting vitamin D and calcium deficiencies) on clinically meaningful outcomes such as activities of daily living, falls and fractures.

This paper reports on a new enzyme capable of degrading blood clots directly without impairing blood coagulation. This enzyme is also non-cytotoxic and constitutes an alternative to other thrombolytic enzymes known to cause undesired side effects. Twenty-four Bacillus isolates were screened for production of fibrinolytic enzymes using a fibrin agar plate. Based on produced activity, isolate S127e was selected and identified as B. subtilis using the 16S rDNA gene sequence. This strain is of biotechnological interest for producing high fibrinolytic yield and consequently has potential in the industrial field. The purified fibrinolytic enzyme has a molecular mass of 27.3 kDa, a predicted pI of 6.6, and a maximal affinity for Ala-Ala-Pro-Phe. This enzyme was almost completely inhibited by chymostatin with optimal activity at 48°C and pH 7. Specific subtilisin features were found in the gene sequence, indicating that this enzyme belongs to the BPN group of the S8 subtilisin family and was assigned as AprE127. This subtilisin increased thromboplastin time by 3.7% (37.6 to 39 s) and prothrombin time by 3.2% (12.6 to 13 s), both within normal ranges. In a whole blood euglobulin assay, this enzyme did not impair coagulation but reduced lysis time significantly. Moreover, in an in vitro assay, AprE127 completely dissolved a thrombus of about 1 cc within 50 min and, in vivo, reduced a thrombus prompted in a rat tail by 11.4% in 24 h compared to non-treated animals.Carotenoids, which have biologically beneficial effects and occur naturally in microorganisms and plants, are pigments widely applied in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. The compound 4,4'-diaponeurosporene is a C30 carotenoid produced by some Lactobacillus species, and Lactobacillus plantarum is the main species producing it. In this study, the antioxidant activity of 4,4'-diaponeurosporene extracted from L. plantarum subsp. plantarum KCCP11226 was examined. Maximum carotenoid content (0.74 ± 0.2 at A470) was obtained at a relatively low temperature (20°C). The DPPH radical scavenging ability of 4,4'-diaponeurosporene (1 mM) was approximately 1.7-fold higher than that of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), a well-known antioxidant food additive. In addition, the ABTS radical scavenging ability was shown to be 2.3- to 7.5-fold higher than that of BHT at the range of concentration from 0.25 mM to 1 mM.
