    Decision models provide insights into the evidence and its implications for those who make choices about clinical care and resource allocation. Decision models are designed to further our understanding and allow exploration of the common problems that we face, with parameters derived from the best available evidence. Analysis of these models demonstrates critical insights and uncertainties surrounding key problems via a readily interpretable yet quantitative format. This 11th installment of the Evidence-Based Medicine in Otolaryngology series thus provides a step-by-step introduction to decision models, their typical framework, and favored approaches to inform data-driven practice for patient-level decisions, as well as comparative assessments of proposed health interventions for larger populations.

The Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) offers a patient-focused approach to foreground the cultural context of the patient in the clinical encounter. Our objective was to explore the acceptability and clinical utility of the CFI for physicians and its acceptability for migrant patients seen at a transcultural mental health clinic in Denmark. In this study, the CFI was used in a second session following the standard clinical assessment to explore what additional information was gained from the CFI. Data on the use of the CFI data were collected immediately after the interview with questionnaires for medical doctors (MDs) (N = 12) and patients (N = 71). The findings showed that the CFI, in addition to standard assessment, was useful to the MDs for planning the treatment (60.0%) and for exploring the patients' view on their cultural and social context (74.7%), but less so for the diagnostic process (9.9%). Patients reported high overall satisfaction with the CFI (93.0%) and viewed it as a welcome opportunity to tell their story. The findings add to existing knowledge on the CFI in terms of acceptability for patients of a primarily Middle Eastern origin and patients using an interpreter during the CFI session. It offers a 16-question interview protocol that has been field tested at sites around the world. This article offers a comprehensive narrative review that synthesizes peer-reviewed, published studies on CFI use. A total of 25 studies were identified, with sample sizes ranging from 1 to 460 participants. In all pilot CFI studies 960 unique subjects were enrolled, and in final CFI studies 739 were enrolled. Studies focused on how the CFI affects clinical practice; explored the CFI through research paradigms in medical communication, implementation science, and family psychiatry; and examined clinician training.   • BK virus (BKV) replication occurs frequently in kidney transplant recipients (KTR), potentially leading to BKV-associated nephropathy (BKVAN) and graft loss. Patients with high titers of BKV-neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) are protected against BKV replication, and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) infusion can increase NAb titers. We investigated whether early IVIg administration prevents BKV replication in patients with low NAb titers ( less then 4 log10 against the BKV-specific genotype). Based on NAb titers on the day of transplantation, KTR followed in the Strasbourg University Hospital (n = 174) were retrospectively divided into the following 3 risk categories for BKV replication (1) patients with low NAb titers ("high-risk") who received IVIg for the first 3 posttransplant months (n = 44), (2) patients with low NAb titers ("high-risk") who did not undergo IVIg treatment (n = 41), and (3) patients with high NAb titers ("low-risk") who did not receive IVIg (n = 89). At 12 posttransplant months, the incidence of BKV viremia in the high-risk group treated with IVIg (6.8%) was similar to that observed in the low-risk group (10.1%) and markedly lower than that of the untreated high-risk group (36.6%; P less then .001).     The purpose of this prospective evaluation is to document in-hospital management and discharge trends of patients presented for acute heart failure.

    A prospective evaluation of the patients presented for heart failure exacerbation at eight sites over 1 month using the method of the New South Wales Heart Failure Snapshot.

    Trained personnel situated at each of the study sites recruited eligible patients to the study and collected data on their sociodemographic characteristics, clinical presentation, self-care, frailty, and depression.

    Eight sites, out of the 27 contacted, agreed to participate in this study. A total of 137 admissions were reported in the 1-month time window. Mean age was 72 (SD = 13) years and the majority were female (52%). More than half (n = 60%) had heart failure reduced ejection fraction with a mean ejection fraction of 41%. The mean Charlson Comorbidity Index score was four with hypertension (80%) and diabetes (56%) being the most frequent. The majority were frail (86%), self-careg medication. The study draws major implications for nursing practice, research and policy.

Thus, horse milk cheese with unique nutrition and flavor, an increasingly popular local cheese of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, is considered to have diverse and specific bacterial community. To verify this hypothesis, horse, ***, and goat milk cheese samples produced under the same environmental conditions and manufacturing process were collected, and the 16S rRNA gene was targeted to determine the bacterial population size and community composition by real-time quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing. The bacterial community of horse milk cheese had a significantly larger bacterial population size, greater species richness, and a more diverse composition than those of *** and goat milk cheeses. Unlike the absolute dominance of Lactococcus and Streptococcus in *** and goat milk cheeses, Lactobacillus and Streptococcus dominated the bacterial community as the starter lactic acid bacteria in horse milk cheese. Additionally, horse milk cheese also contains a higher abundance of unclassified secondary bacteria and specific secondary bacteria (e.g., Psychrobacter, Sulfurisoma, Halomonas, and Brevibacterium) than *** and goat milk cheeses. These abundant, diverse, and specific starter lactic acid bacteria and secondary bacteria may generate unique nutrition and flavor of horse milk cheese.
    The aim of the study was to determine whether it is safe to stop secondary prophylaxis in patients with talaromycosis after immune reconstitution with a sustained increase in CD4 count to ≥ 100 cells/µL after antiretroviral therapy (ART).

    A retrospective cohort analysis was performed in HIV-infected patients treated for talaromycosis between June 2009 and June 2017 in Medical Action Myanmar (MAM) clinics.

    Among a cohort of 5466 HIV-infected patients, 41 patients were diagnosed with and treated for clinical talaromycosis. All the patients were on ART and had a CD4 count <100cells/µL. Of these 41 patients, 24 patients (71%) were skin smear positive for talaromycosis, while results were negative in 17 patients. Median CD4 count and haemoglobin concentration were 24 cells/µL and 7.7g/dL, respectively. Seventy-three per cent (30) were male. Among the 41 patients, 11 (27%) died and six (15%) were transferred to other centres. Twenty-four patients (58% of the total diagnosed) stopped itraconazole secondary prophylaxis after starting active ART with CD4 counts > 100 cells/µL for at least 1year. Throughout the duration of follow-up post itraconazole cessation, the observed incidence of relapse was zero with a total follow-up of 93.8 person-years (95% confidence interval 0-4 per 100 person-years). The median (25th, 75th percentile) duration of follow-up post-prophylaxis discontinuation was 2.8 (2.1, 6.3) years.

  • ally significant, with a fold change (FC) = 4.25 ± 1.60, p-values (p) less then 0.05.Passive bottom-set nets are the most widely used fishing gears in Mediterranean small-scale fisheries (SSFs). Trammel nets, in particular, have key advantages such as their ease of use and handling and high capture efficiency for numerous commercial species. However, they entail high discard rates (5-44% of the total catch) connected to high mortality, thus exerting an adverse impact on benthic communities, besides catching individuals of commercial species under the minimum conservation reference size (MCRS) and specimens of protected species. Fish pots are seen as alternative and a more sustainable gear type that allow reducing discards in SSFs. In this study, a collapsible pot was tested at three coastal sites in the north-western Adriatic Sea (GFCM GSA 17) to compare its catch efficiency with that of the local traditional trammel nets. Data analysis demonstrated a similar catch efficiency for the commercial species, both among sites and as a whole. Moreover, the trammel net caught a larger amount of discards, both in terms of species number and of CPUEW. The catch comparison study involved the two most abundant landed species, common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis and annular sea bream Diplodus annularis. The pots were more effective for S. officinalis, whereas the trammel net was more effective for the shorter length classes for D. annularis, which were mostly under the MCRS (12 cm). The innovative pots could provide a valuable alternative to the trammel nets traditionally used in the Adriatic Sea, at least in certain areas and periods. Their main advantages include that they do not require a different rigging and they can be used without bait, while their foldable design allows large numbers to be easily loaded on board SSF vessels. The results of this pilot study indicate that pots can achieve the objectives of reducing discards and bycatch in SSFs without penalizing the catch of commercial species.Chitons are a group of marine mollusks (class Polyplacophora) characterized by having eight articulating shell plates on their dorsal body surface. They represent suitable materials for studying the spatiotemporal processes that underlie population differentiation and speciation in ocean environments. Here we performed population genetic analyses on the northwestern Pacific chiton Acanthochitona cf. rubrolineata (Lischke, 1873) using two mitochondrial gene fragments (COI and 16S) from 180 individuals sampled from 11 populations among the coastal waters of Korea, Japan, and China. The phylogenetic network uncovered a reticulated relationship with several sub-haplogroups for all A. cf. rubrolineata haplotypes. SAMOVA analyses suggested the best grouping occurred at three groups (ΦCT = 0.151, P less then 0.0001), which geographically corresponds to hydrographic discontinuity among the coastal regions of Korea, Japan, and China. The assumed limited dispersal ability of A. cf. rubrolineata, coupled with northeasterly flowing, trifurcate warm currents, might have contributed to the genetic differentiation among the three groups. Meanwhile, a high level of within-group genetic homogeneity was detected, indicating extensive coastal currents might facilitate gene flow among the populations within each group. Bayesian skyline plots demonstrated significant population expansion after the Last Glacial Period (110-25 thousand years ago) for all studied populations except the Japan group. Together these results suggest that the present-day phylogeographic patterns of A. cf. rubrolineata are strongly affected by the interplay of historical and/or contemporary oceanography and species-specific life-history features.Microorganisms play a significant part in detoxifying and immobilizing excessive metals. The present research isolated a strain (HM7) with high Mn(II) tolerance from Mn(II)-contaminated soil samples. The 16S rDNA sequence analysis showed that HM7 had a 99% similarity to Bacillus thuringiensis, which can survive under a high concentration 4,000 mg/L of Mn(II), and the highest removal rate was up to 95.04% at the concentration of 400 mg/L. The highest Mn(II) removal rate was detected at the contact time 72 h, temperature 30 °C, and pH 5.0, while the differences in strain growth and Mn(II) removal rate among different inoculation doses were insignificant. Scanning electron microscopy indicated B. thuringiensis HM7 cells appeared irregular and cracked under Mn(II) stress. Fourier transform infrared exhibited that functional groups like carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, sulfhydryl groups, and amide bands might take part in the complexation of Mn(II). In addition, HM7 suggested the ability of indoleacetic acid production, siderophore production, and P' solubilization potential. Therefore, HM7 might have a potential to promote metal absorption by changing the form of heavy metals, and the experiments supported the application of B. thuringiensis HM7 as a biological adsorbent in Mn(II) contaminated environment remediation.
    To evaluate the safety and tolerability of a microsphere thermo-responsive hydrogel drug delivery system (DDS) loaded with aflibercept in a nonhuman primate model.

    A sterile 50 µL of aflibercept-loaded microsphere thermo-responsive hydrogel-DDS (aflibercept-DDS) was injected intravitreally into the right eye of 10 healthy rhesus macaques. A complete ophthalmic examination, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, fundus photography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and electroretinogram were performed monthly for 6 months. Moreover, the trammel net caught a larger amount of discards, both in terms of species number and of CPUEW. The pots were more effective for S. officinalis, whereas the trammel net was more effective for the shorter length classes for D. annularis, which were mostly under the MCRS (12 cm). Here we performed population genetic analyses on the northwestern Pacific chiton Acanthochitona cf. rubrolineata (Lischke, 1873) using two mitochondrial gene fragments (COI and 16S) from 180 individuals sampled from 11 populations among the coastal waters of Korea, Japan, and China. The phylogenetic network uncovered a reticulated relationship with several sub-haplogroups for all A. cf. rubrolineata haplotypes. SAMOVA analyses suggested the best grouping occurred at three groups (ΦCT = 0.151, P less then 0.0001), which geographically corresponds to hydrographic discontinuity among the coastal regions of Korea, Japan, and China. The assumed limited dispersal ability of A. cf. rubrolineata, coupled with northeasterly flowing, trifurcate warm currents, might have contributed to the genetic differentiation among the three groups. The 16S rDNA sequence analysis showed that HM7 had a 99% similarity to Bacillus thuringiensis, which can survive under a high concentration 4,000 mg/L of Mn(II), and the highest removal rate was up to 95.04% at the concentration of 400 mg/L. The highest Mn(II) removal rate was detected at the contact time 72 h, temperature 30 °C, and pH 5.0, while the differences in strain growth and Mn(II) removal rate among different inoculation doses were insignificant. Scanning electron microscopy indicated B. thuringiensis HM7 cells appeared irregular and cracked under Mn(II) stress.     COVID-19 has been the most priority of the world since the early 2020s. We aimed to investigate the importance, urgency and value of serological tests for monitoring and evaluation of COVID-19.

    Rapid review.

    This study was conducted through a review of seroepidemiological studies to evaluate their strength and weakness in monitoring and predicting the epidemic situation of COVID-19.

We aimed to identify the pattern of substance use among high school students and its relationship with psychosocial factors.

Bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression were carried out to identify factors associated with psychological distress.

    Murder is one of the public health problems. According to the WHO reports, murder is fourth leading cause of death among young people. The aim of this study was applying joint point regression model to study trend of homicide mortality in Iran, 2006-2016.

    Homicide data during 2006 to 2016 were extracted from Iranian legal medicine organization. Trends of homicide incidence were summarized by annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent change (AAPC) using non-linear segmented regression model.

    Totally, 26918 homicide cases occurred during the period from 2006 to 2016. The highest and lowest frequency was related to the 15-29 yr (46.5%) and 0-4 yr (1.5%) age groups, respectively. The homicide incidence rate of the country in 2016 was 2.81 per 100,000. The four provinces of Sistan & Baluchistan, Khuzestan, Kerman and Ilam had the highest incidence rate in 2016, respectively. During the study period, the incidence rate of homicide in Iran and men have been significantly decreased (APC -2.8% (95% CI -3.9, -1.7) and -3.2% (95% CI - 4.5, -1.8) respectively (P<0.001)).

    The pattern of homicide rate has a downward trend in the country. Moreover, the varying observed trends in some provinces can be due to the variability in mental, geographical, socio-economic and cultural conditions in each region.

Large variation was observed among 346 bp cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences (0.3-16.0 %); the topology of the phylogenetic tree showed no relationship to host genera or geographical regions of origin.     Digital transformation enables new possibilities to assess objective functional impairment (OFI) in patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD). This study examines the psychometric properties of an app-based 6-minute walking test (6WT) and determines OFI in patients with lumbar DDD.

    The maximum 6-minute walking distance (6WD) was determined in patients with lumbar DDD. The results were expressed as raw 6WDs (in meters), as well as in standardized z-scores referenced to age- and sex-specific values of spine-healthy volunteers. The 6WT results were assessed for reliability and content validity using established disease-specific patient-reported outcome measures.

    Seventy consecutive patients and 330 volunteers were enrolled. The mean 6WD was 370 m (SD 137 m) in patients with lumbar DDD. Significant correlations between 6WD and the Core Outcome Measures Index for the **** (r = -0.31), Zurich Claudication Questionnaire (ZCQ) symptom severity (r = -0.32), ZCQ physical function (r = -0.33), visual analog scale (VAS) for **** pain (r = -0.42), and VAS for leg pain (r = -0.32) were observed (all p < 0.05). The 6WT revealed good test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.82), and the standard error of measurement was 58.3 m. A 4-tier severity stratification classified patients with z-scores > -1 (no OFI), -1 to -1.9 (mild OFI), -2 to -2.9 (moderate OFI), and ≤ -3 (severe OFI).

    Rigid multiplanar thoracolumbar adult spinal deformity (ASD) cases are challenging and many require a 3-column osteotomy (3CO), specifically asymmetrical pedicle subtraction osteotomy (APSO). The outcomes and additional risks of performing APSO for the correction of concurrent sagittal-coronal deformity have yet to be adequately studied.

    The authors performed a retrospective review of all ASD patients who underwent 3CO during the period from 2006 to 2019. All cases involved either isolated sagittal deformity (patients underwent standard PSO) or concurrent sagittal-coronal deformity (coronal vertical axis [CVA] ≥ 4.0 cm; patients underwent APSO). Perioperative and 2-year follow-up outcomes were compared between patients with isolated sagittal imbalance who underwent PSO and those with concurrent sagittal-coronal imbalance who underwent APSO.

This study examines the psychometric properties of an app-based 6-minute walking test (6WT) and determines OFI in patients with lumbar DDD. The maximum 6-minute walking distance (6WD) was determined in patients with lumbar DDD. The results were expressed as raw 6WDs (in meters), as well as in standardized z-scores referenced to age- and sex-specific values of spine-healthy volunteers. The 6WT results were assessed for reliability and content validity using established disease-specific patient-reported outcome measures. Seventy consecutive patients and 330 volunteers were enrolled. The mean 6WD was 370 m (SD 137 m) in patients with lumbar DDD. Rigid multiplanar thoracolumbar adult spinal deformity (ASD) cases are challenging and many require a 3-column osteotomy (3CO), specifically asymmetrical pedicle subtraction osteotomy (APSO).   • The microbial growth was described through a Monod-type kinetic equation as a first approach. Substrate inhibition, decay rate and tannin hydrolysis process were included to better describe the behaviour of immobilised biomass selected in the tannin-degrading bioreactor. The model was implemented in AQUASIM using the specific tool Biofilm Compartment to simulate the attached fungal biofilm. Biofilm features and transport parameters were either measured or assumed from the literature. Key kinetic and stoichiometric unknown parameters were successfully estimated, overcoming critical steps for scaling-up a novel fungal-based technology for tannins biodegradation.This work investigates the efficiency of LED and UV-C photo-reactors for paracetamol degradation using advanced oxidative processes. Among the evaluated processes, photo-Fenton was the most efficient for both radiations. Degradations greater than 81% (λ 197 nm) and 91% (λ 243 nm) were obtained in the kinetic study. These degradations were also observed by means of the reduction in the peaks in both spectral scanning and high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The good fit of the Chan and Chu kinetic model shows that the degradation reaction has pseudo-first order behavior. Results indicated that the removal efficiency of MB (10 mg/L) was the best at the M (Mg, Zn, Mn) Fe molar ratio of 31 by using 2.0 g/L of M-Fe LDH at pH 6.0 under 298.15 K. Mg-Fe LDH had the highest removal performance (71.94 mg/g at 298.15 K) for MB compared to those of the Zn-Fe and Mn-Fe LDH. Zn-Fe LDH with the smallest activation energy resulted in the fastest adsorption rate of MB. The removal efficiencies for PO4-P and NH4-N were 82.5-90.7% and 13.4-22.9%, respectively. The struvite recovered from the hydrocyclone was sifted using standard sieves and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Nitrosopumilales was enriched in marine sediments with the activities of offshore petroleum exploitation compared to the control sediments. The abundances of function genes involved in carbon, butanoate, methane, and fatty acid metabolism in sediment microbial communities also increased due to the offshore petroleum exploitation. Offshore petroleum exploitation resulted in the propagation of some antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), including a multidrug transporter, smeE, and arnA, in marine sediments via horizontal gene transfer mediated by class I integrons.

  • The present review focuses on the structural characterization of chemically functionalized NGs. It is hoped that this review will help to advance this field.The objective of the current study was to describe the structures of the pastern and coffin joints in dromedary camel using x-ray, bone and soft tissue windows computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional volume rendering (3DVR) of CT imaging. 3DVR of CT was obtained at the slight flexed dorsal view, plantar view, dorsolateral view and lateral view which explained all the surfaces and structures of the digit bony parts even the parts of the articular surface. The processed images of 3DVR of CT showed different patterns of the cortical, cancellous, subchondral bones and medullary cavity of the bones of the digits. The present study showed clearly all the hard and soft tissues in the pastern and coffin joints of the camel in CT images; however, the plantar ligaments of the pastern joint and ligaments of the navicular cartilage identified on CT images. The CT soft tissue window visualized the joint cavity and their pouches and tendon sheath of the flexor tendons better than the bone window CT. The radiographic, CT and 3D images could be used as a normal reference for the interpretation of some clinical diseases in the pastern and coffin joints of the camel.Biotelemetry is a central tool for fisheries management, with the implantation of transmitters into animals requiring refined surgical techniques that maximize retention rates and fish welfare. Even following successful surgery, long-term post-release survival rates can vary considerably, although knowledge is limited for many species. The aim here was to investigate the post-tagging survival rates in the wild of two lowland river fish species, common bream Abramis brama and northern pike Esox lucius, following their intra-peritoneal double-tagging with acoustic transmitters and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags. Survival over a 2-year period was assessed using acoustic transmitter data in Cox proportional hazards models. Post-tagging survival rates were lowest in the reproductive periods of both species, but in bream, fish tagged just prior to spawning actually had the highest subsequent survival rates. Pike survival was influenced by sex, with males generally surviving longer than females. PIT tag detections at fixed stations identified bream that remained active, despite loss of an acoustic transmitter signal. In these instances, loss of the acoustic signal occurred up to 215 days post-tagging and only during late spring or summer, indicating a role of elevated temperature, while PIT detections occurred between 18 and 359 days after the final acoustic detections. Biotelemetry studies must thus always consider the date of tagging as a fundamental component of study designs to avoid tagged fish having premature end points within telemetry studies.The study evaluated the effect of dietary inclusion of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L) seed (raw and roasted) on nephrotoxicity caused by cisplatin in rats. Rats were divided into control group, cisplatin-induced nephrotoxic untreated group, nephrotoxic-treated groups with Methimazole, dietary regimen containing raw pumpkin seed (5% and 10%) and roasted pumpkin seed (5% and 10%) for 14 days.     Previous studies suggest that FOXD1 is involved in tumorigenesis and closely related to the patients' poor outcome in human cancer. However, its expression pattern in primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains uncovered.   • Robot-assisted surgery is assumed to be time consuming partially due to extra time needed in preparing the robot. The objective of this study was to give realistic times in Da Vinci Xi draping and docking and to analyse the learning curve in the transition from the Si to the Xi in an experienced team. This prospective study was held in a hospital with a high volume of robot-assisted surgery in general surgery, urology and gynaecology. Times from the moment patients entered the operating room until the surgeon took place behind console were precisely recorded during the first 6 weeks after the implementation of the Xi. In total, 65 procedures were performed and documented. The learning curve for the process of draping and docking the robot was reached after 21 and 18 cases, respectively. Mean times after completion of the learning curve were 5 min for draping and 7 min for docking and were statistically different from mean times before completion of the learning curve (p values  less then  0.01). In dedicated teams netto extra time needed for preparing the Xi can even be reduced to just the time needed for docking. Thus, setting up the robot should have limited impact on overall time spent in the operation room.PURPOSE OF REVIEW Oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia, with many patients achieving major clinical and molecular responses without complications. In turn, to provide safe and effective treatment to all patients, it is necessary to close the knowledge gap regarding mechanisms that drive toxicity and elucidate the complex interactions that predispose specific individuals to these toxicities.A high fat diet (HFD) is considered to be a risk factor for the development of dementia because it increases oxidative stress in the brain; thus, diets rich in antioxidants, such as polyphenols, may protect against oxidative damage. In this study, we explored the antioxidant activity and neural protective function of millet on high fat diet-induced oxidative stress in rat brains. Our results suggested that the intake of millet could alleviate oxidative stress in the hippocampus and downregulate the expression of the Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related genes amyloid precursor protein (App), tau, and γ-secretase. Furthermore, we extracted millet polyphenols and verified whether they play important roles during this process. The results showed that millet polyphenols significantly prevented H2O2-induced cell death of SH-SY5Y cells and decreased oxidative stress levels in cells. In addition, the expression levels of pro-inflammatory factors and AD-related genes were also downregulated by treatment with millet polyphenols. Pulse wave analysis based on PPG was implemented using either notch relative amplitude (MAPNRA), notch absolute amplitude (MAPNAA) or PI (MAPPI) to estimate MAP from PPG waveform features during general anesthesia. Estimated MAP values were compared to brachial cuff MAP (MAPcuff) and to radial invasive MAP (MAPinv). Forty-six patients were analyzed for a total of 235 h. Compared to MAPcuff, mean bias and limits of agreement were 1 mmHg (- 26 to +29), - 1 mmHg (- 10 to +8) and - 3 mmHg (- 21 to +13) for MAPNRA, MAPNAA and MAPPI respectively. Compared to MAPinv, mean absolute error (MAE) was 20 mmHg [10 to 39], 11 mmHg [5 to 18] and 16 mmHg [9 to 24] for MAP derived from MAPNRA, MAPNAA and MAPPI respectively. When calibrated every 5 min, MAPNAA showed a MAE of 6 mmHg [5 to 9]. MAPNAA provides the best estimates with respect to brachial cuff MAP and invasive MAP. We provide a methodological guide and critical reading of an extensive set of statistical results that can be obtained using currently available datasets. In particular, we take the challenge posed by current small size COVID data and show how significant can be the bias introduced by transfer-learning using larger public non-COVID CXR datasets. We also contribute by providing results on a medium size COVID CXR dataset, just collected by one of the major emergency hospitals in Northern Italy during the peak of the COVID pandemic. These novel data allow us to contribute to validate the generalization capacity of preliminary results circulating in the scientific community. Our conclusions shed some light into the possibility to effectively discriminate COVID using CXR.

Moreover, the observed impact of epigenetic silencing on KEAP1 expression in specific KRAS and EGFR settings may suggest a potential role of KEAP1 methylation as a predictive marker for NSCLC patients for whom anti-EGFR treatments are considered.A library of 23 pure compounds of varying structural and chemical characteristics was screened for their quorum sensing (QS) inhibition activity using a synthetic fluorescent Escherichia coli biosensor that incorporates a modified version of lux regulon of Vibrio fischeri. Four such compounds exhibited QS inhibition activity without compromising bacterial growth, namely, phenazine carboxylic acid (PCA), 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4-quinolone (PQS), 1H-2-methyl-4-quinolone (MOQ) and genipin. When applied at 50 µM, these compounds reduced the QS response of the biosensor to 33.7% ± 2.6%, 43.1% ± 2.7%, 62.2% ± 6.3% and 43.3% ± 1.2%, respectively. A series of compounds only showed activity when tested at higher concentrations. This was the case of caffeine, which, when applied at 1 mM, reduced the QS to 47% ± 4.2%. In turn, capsaicin, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), furanone and polygodial exhibited antibacterial activity when applied at 1mM, and reduced the bacterial growth by 12.8% ± 10.1%, 24.4% ± 7.0%, 91.4% ± 7.4% and 97.5% ± 3.8%, respectively. We found that 82% of the children had a PMP, and 78% were exposed to noise when playing computer games. An audiometric notch was documented in 1.3% of the children. Only 11.5% of the children ever used hearing protection while engaged in noisy activities. We found no convincing evidence of an association between PMP use and hearing thresholds, although our results suggest that tinnitus may be an early sign of NIHL in young children. The aim of the current study was to test the effects of eating a vitamin C-rich food (kiwifruit) on subjective vitality and whether effects are driven by vitamin C. Young adults (n = 167, 61.1% female, aged 18-35) with plasma vitamin C less then 40 µmol/L were randomized into three intervention conditions kiwifruit (2 SunGold™ kiwifruit/day), vitamin C (250 mg tablet/day), placebo (1 tablet/day). The trial consisted of a two-week lead-in, four-week intervention, and two-week washout. Plasma vitamin C and vitality questionnaires (total mood disturbance, fatigue, and well-being) were measured fortnightly. Self-reported sleep quality and physical activity were measured every second day through smartphone surveys. Nutritional confounds were assessed using a three-day food diary during each study phase. Plasma vitamin C reached saturation levels within two weeks for the kiwifruit and vitamin C groups.

The study sample consisted of 1032 children aged 11-12 years old. Hearing thresholds were determined from 0.5 to 8 kHz. PMP use and other noise exposures were evaluated using a survey. We found that 82% of the children had a PMP, and 78% were exposed to noise when playing computer games. An audiometric notch was documented in 1.3% of the children. Only 11.5% of the children ever used hearing protection while engaged in noisy activities. We found no convincing evidence of an association between PMP use and hearing thresholds, although our results suggest that tinnitus may be an early sign of NIHL in young children. The study shows a need to provide children, their parents, and educators with knowledge of how to take care of hearing, including how to avoid and minimize noise exposure.Consumption of vitamin C-rich fruit and vegetables has been associated with greater feelings of vitality. However, these associations have rarely been tested in randomized controlled trials. The aim of the current study was to test the effects of eating a vitamin C-rich food (kiwifruit) on subjective vitality and whether effects are driven by vitamin C. Young adults (n = 167, 61.1% female, aged 18-35) with plasma vitamin C less then 40 µmol/L were randomized into three intervention conditions kiwifruit (2 SunGold™ kiwifruit/day), vitamin C (250 mg tablet/day), placebo (1 tablet/day). The trial consisted of a two-week lead-in, four-week intervention, and two-week washout. Plasma vitamin C and vitality questionnaires (total mood disturbance, fatigue, and well-being) were measured fortnightly. Self-reported sleep quality and physical activity were measured every second day through smartphone surveys. Nutritional confounds were assessed using a three-day food diary during each study phase. Plasma vitamin C reached saturation levels within two weeks for the kiwifruit and vitamin C groups.
