But the research questions and the research tools in limnology are changing rapidly in the era of big data, with consequences for the relevance of our current discretization schemes. Here, I examine how and why we discretize and argue that selectively rethinking the extent to which we must discretize gives us an exceptional chance to advance limnology in new ways. To help us decide when to discretize, I offer a framework (discretization evaluation framework) that can be used to compare the usefulness of various discretization approaches to an alternative which relies less on discretization. This framework, together with a keen awareness of discretization's advantages and disadvantages, may help limnologists benefit from the ongoing information explosion. During migration, contaminants can also enter less mobile zones, such as pools or water in intra-karstic sediments, or advance from conduits into the adjacent fractured rock matrix. As contaminant concentrations in the main flow path(s) decrease, contaminants may migrate **** into the main flow path and reach the karst springs at low (but significant) concentrations over a long time span. This is the conventional interpretation for the oft-observed steep rising limb and the long-tailed falling limb of tracer breakthrough curves in karst systems. Here, field measurements are examined from an alpine karst system in Austria where a series of distinctive, long-tailed breakthrough curves (****) of conservative tracers were observed over distances up to 7400 m. Recognizing that the conventional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) cannot usually quantify such behavior, two other modeling approaches are considered, namely the two-region non-equilibrium (2RNE) model, which explicitly includes mobile and immobile zones, and a continuous time random walk (CTRW) model, which is based on a physically-based, probabilistic approach that describes anomalous (or non-Fickian) transport behavior characteristic of heterogeneous systems such as karst. In most cases, the ADE and 2RNE models do not quantify the low concentrations at longer travel times. The CTRW, in contrast, accounts for the long-tailed breakthrough behavior found in this karst system. Grain filling is the final determinant of yield, and this process is susceptible to abiotic stresses. Salicylic acid (SA) regulates grain filling in rice plants. A comparative proteomic study was conducted to understand how SA mediates grain filling under soil drying (SD) condition. Zhefu802 and its near-isogenic line (NIL) were planted in pots in an artificial chamber. SA (100 mg L-1) was applied, followed by SD treatment (with a water potential of -30 to -35 kPa) at anthesis. The results showed that the grain yield and grain weight significantly decreased under SD in Zhefu802, but not in its NIL variety. SD also decreased expression of photosynthesis-related proteins in grains of Zhefu802, which resulted in its poorer drought resistance. Furthermore, the decreased grain filling rate rather than the grain size explained the observed decreased grain weight and grain yield under SD. Interestingly, these reductions were reversed by SA. Expression of proteins involved in glycolysis/TCA circle, starch and sucrose metabolism, antioxidation and detoxication, oxidative phosphorylation, transcription, translation, and signal transduction, were significantly down-regulated under SD and were significantly up-regulated in response to SA.

MV was found in 71% of Vespula vulgaris screened and was also detected in UK Vespa crabro. Only seven percent of Vespa velutina individuals screened were MV-positive and these were exclusively samples from Jersey. Of 69 honey bee colonies screened, 43% tested positive for MV. MV replication was confirmed in Apis mellifera and Vespidae species, being most frequently detected in Vespula vulgaris. MV sequences from the UK were most similar to MV from Vespula pensylvanica compared to MV from Vespa velutina in Belgium. The morphological analysis of cultures showed predominantly monocyte-like cells on Day 1 and macrophage-like cells on Day 5, suggesting that the HKLs had differentiated from monocytes to macrophages. Day 5 HKLs also contained a higher percentage of phagocytic cells. Small RNA sequencing and qPCR analysis were applied to examine the miRNA diversity and expression. There were 370 known mature Atlantic salmon miRNAs in HKLs. Twenty-two miRNAs (15 families) were downregulated while 44 miRNAs (25 families) were upregulated on Day 5 vs. Day 1. Mammalian orthologs of many of the differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs are known to regulate macrophage activation and differentiation, while the teleost-specific miR-2188, miR-462 and miR-731 were also DE and are associated with immune responses in fish. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between time in therapeutic range (TTR) after warfarin initiation and clinical outcomes of NVAF. Methods TTR was calculated by the Rosendaal method from international normalized ratio (INR) data acquired from a nationwide NVAF registry in Thailand. Patients were followed-up every six months. The association between TTR and clinical outcomes was analyzed. Results There was a total of 2233 patients from 27 hospitals. The average age was 68.4 ± 10.6 years. The average TTR was 53.56 ± 26.37%. Rates of ischemic stroke/TIA, major bleeding, ICH, and death were 1.33, 2.48, 0.76, and 3.3 per 100 person-years, respectively. When patients with a TTR less then 65% were compared with those with TTR ≥ 65%, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) for the increased risks of ischemic stroke/TIA, major bleeding, ICH, and death were 3.07, 1.90, 2.34, and 2.11, respectively. Conclusion Poor TTR control is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in patients with NVAF who were on warfarin. Efforts to ensure good TTR (≥65%) after initiation of warfarin are mandatory to minimize the risk of adverse clinical outcomes.The sharing of college food insecurity data with higher education administrators and stakeholders is essential to increase awareness of campus-specific food insecurity outcomes. The interpretation and forecasted use of the reports were evaluated through a 17-item online survey. The survey was completed by 26 content experts and showed a favorable perception of the eB4CAST institutional report. A majority of participants strongly agreed that the eB4CAST food insecurity report was clear to understand (72%), it was easy to read (64%), the statistics were easy to interpret (80%), it shared valuable information (92%), and it was impactful to their work (80%). Further, 84% of participants found the overall information of the report to be relevant and sharable. Participants forecasted disseminating the reports primarily to administration (77%) and with other faculty and staff (85%). These findings highlight the projected usability of the visualized data eB4CAST report across many sectors of college food insecurity research, which may help disseminate rapid findings on this emerging issue and increase awareness.Factors such as gender, ethnicity, and age affect pain processing in children and adolescents with chronic pain. Although obesity has been shown to affect pain processing in adults, almost nothing is known about pediatric populations. The aim of this pilot study was to explore whether obesity alters sensory processing in adolescents with chronic pain. Participants were recruited from a chronic pain clinic (Chronic Pain (CP), n = 12 normal weight; Chronic Pain + Obesity (CPO), n = 19 overweight/obesity) and from an obesity clinic (Obesity alone (O), n = 14). The quantitative sensory testing protocol included assessments of thermal and mechanical pain thresholds and perceptual sensitization at two sites with little adiposity. The heat pain threshold at the hand was significantly higher in the CPO group than in either the CP or O groups. Mechanical pain threshold (foot) was significantly higher in the CPO group than the CP group. No differences were found on tests of perceptual sensitization. Correlations between experimental pain and clinical pain parameters were found for the CPO group, but not for the CP group.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is capable of performing syndrome differentiation and treatment according to the clinical manifestations of patients, and has a better ability of epidemic prevention and control. The authors comprehensively analyzed the etiology and pathogenesis of COVID-19 based on the theory of TCM, and discussed its syndrome differentiation, treatment and prevention measures so as to provide strategies and reference for the prevention and treatment with TCM.Introduction Treatment of humeral non-union with or without bone defect is complex, with non-negligible rates of complication and failure. Few reports focused on management of treatment failure. Objective The study hypothesis was that the induced-membrane technique associated in a 2-stage strategy to internal fixation provides systematic bone healing in refractory humeral non-union. Material and methods The study included 15 patients, with a median age of 46.6 years, with humeral non-union of a mean 24 months' progression and mean history of 3 attempted revision surgeries. Hypothesis To perform a systematic review of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assessed the ability of external immobilization to reduce the recurrence in patients with primary anterior shoulder instability. Material and method As with the original review, we used the search strategies recommended by the Cochrane **** Review Group for the identification of RCTs. Thirteen RCTs were included in the systematic review, and 11 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Result A total of 1042 participants with primary shoulder dislocation were involved. The meta-analysis of 11 trials revealed that ER therapy leading to less recurrence rates than participants treated with IR therapy (RR=0.55; 95%CI 0.36 to 0.82; Z=2.88; p=0.004), and less complications (RR=0.6; 95%CI 0.39 to 0.92; Z=2.33; p=0.02) from the 5 independent trials. The meta-analysis of three trials revealed that there are not statistically significant in compliance rate (RR=1.08; 95%CI 0.89 to 1.29; Z=0.78; p=0.44). The GRADE level of evidence is high for adverse events, but moderate for recurrence rate and Compliance rate. The Begg test showed that no significant publication bias was detected (p=0.062). We report the three-dimensional structure of PmPV2, at 17.2 Å resolution determined by negative-stain electron microscopy and its solution structure by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We found that PV2s differ from nearly all MACPFs in two respects it is a dimer in solution and protomers combine two immune proteins into an AB toxin. The MACPF chain is linked by a single disulfide bond to a tachylectin chain, and two heterodimers are arranged head-to-tail by non-covalent forces in the native protein. MACPF domain is fused with a putative new Ct-accessory domain exclusive to invertebrates. The tachylectin is a six-bladed β-propeller, similar to animal tectonins. We experimentally validated the predicted functions of both subunits and demonstrated for the first time that PV2s are true pore-forming toxins. The tachylectin ¨B¨ delivery subunit would bind to target membranes, and then the MACPF ¨A¨ toxic subunit would disrupt lipid bilayers forming large pores altering the plasma membrane conductance. These results indicate that PV2s toxicity evolved by linking two immune proteins where their combined preexisting functions gave rise to a new toxic entity with a novel role in defense against predation.   • To obtain the dynamic surface of high-frequency vibrating mirrors (VMs), a novel method involving multi-field interference (MFI) pattern imaging on a single image is proposed in this paper. Using multiple reflections and refractions, the proposed method generates three interference patterns at the same time, which improves the traditional time-series methods where a single interference pattern can be obtained at one time. Experimental results show that a series of MFI patterns can be obtained on a single image, with the laser repetition frequency (LRF) ranging from 200 Hz to 10 Hz, and the frame rate of the camera at 10 Hz. Particularly if the LRF (10 Hz) is equal to the frame rate of image, crosstalk is avoided completely, which is particularly desirable in dynamic surface measurement. In summary, the MFI imaging method provides an effective way for VM dynamic surface measurement.In this article, the modification effects on Al-Mg2Si before and after heat treatment were investigated with Ca, Sb, and (Ca + Sb). The aim of this survey was to assess and compare aspects of oral health attitudes and behaviours between preclinical and clinical dental students in German universities. The German-language version of the HU-DBI was distributed to preclinical and clinical students from different German universities. Dichotomized (agree/disagree) responses to 20 HU-DBI items were provided in this study, with a maximum possible score of 19. A quantitative estimate of oral health attitudes and behaviours was provided by the total of appropriate answers given to every statement by each group. Data were analysed statistically. The overall mean score of answers favouring good oral hygiene was marginally higher in preclinical (14.62) than clinical students (14.31) but showed no statistical significance. Similarly, the analysis of each item individually displayed no statistically significant differences between preclinical and clinical participants, except in a single item of the survey. This study showed no effective differences in oral hygiene attitudes and behaviour between preclinical and clinical students in German universities.     To obtain the dynamic surface of high-frequency vibrating mirrors (VMs), a novel method involving multi-field interference (MFI) pattern imaging on a single image is proposed in this paper. Using multiple reflections and refractions, the proposed method generates three interference patterns at the same time, which improves the traditional time-series methods where a single interference pattern can be obtained at one time. Experimental results show that a series of MFI patterns can be obtained on a single image, with the laser repetition frequency (LRF) ranging from 200 Hz to 10 Hz, and the frame rate of the camera at 10 Hz. Particularly if the LRF (10 Hz) is equal to the frame rate of image, crosstalk is avoided completely, which is particularly desirable in dynamic surface measurement.     Flavonoids were highly effective in potentiating BRAFi therapy in human melanoma cell lines by increasing sensitivity and delaying the pool of resistant cells that arise during treatment. As AhR antagonists, flavonoids counteracted a gene expression program associated with the acquisition of resistance and phenotype switching that leads to an invasive and EMT-like phenotype.

Monthly nation-wide chikungunya case reports were obtained from the Indonesian National Disease Surveillance database, and incidence rates (IR) and case fatality rate (CFR) were calculated. Monthly data of Niño3.4 (indicator used to represent the ENSO) and DMI between 2011 and 2017 were also collected. Correlations between monthly IR and CFR and Niño3.4 and DMI were assessed using Spearman's rank correlation. We found that chikungunya case reports declined from 1972 cases in 2016 to 126 cases in 2017, a 92.6% reduction; the IR reduced from 0.67 to 0.05 cases per 100,000 population. No deaths associated with chikungunya have been recorded since its re-emergence in Indonesia in 2001. There was no significant correlation between monthly Niño3.4 and chikungunya incidence with r = -0.142 (95%CI -0.320-0.046), p = 0.198. However, there was a significant negative correlation between monthly DMI and chikungunya incidence, r = -0.404 (95%CI -0.229--0.554) with p less then 0.001. In conclusion, our initial data suggests that the climate variable, DMI but not Niño3.4, is likely associated with changes in chikungunya incidence.   • This study focuses on food waste by end consumers and explores factors in the food waste behavior of the emerging adulthood consumer, which can be used as a reference for improving food waste in schools, governments, and other related industries in the future. The results show that the model of factors influencing the food waste behavior of emerging adulthood consumers established in this study is acceptable. According to the analysis results of the structural equation modeling (SEM), it can be seen that the influences of environmental concerns on the attitude toward behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control are ranked first, second, and third, respectively. These data are useful for investigating clusters of infection and understanding the scale at which interspecific transmission may occur. We utilised a comprehensive dataset of routinely sampled isolates from infected cattle and from badgers killed in road-traffic accidents to investigate the spatial co-location of MLVA types in, and between, the badger and cattle populations. Furthermore, we investigated the hypothesis that the type of farming enterprise might explain some variation in this relationship. MLVA types were spatially co-localised in cattle and road-traffic accident (RTA) badger hosts, indicative of a shared epidemic. Dairy herds were more likely to have at least one MLVA type in common with nearby RTA badgers, compared to non-dairy herd types. Marginally more MLVA spatial clustering was observed in non-dairy herds, which may be a consequence of relatively more between-herd movements. A 24 central composite design (CCD) coupled with response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate and optimize the important variables. A significant quadratic model (P-value less then 0.0001, R2 = 0.9664) was derived using an analysis of variance (ANOVA), which was adequate to perform the process variables optimization. The optimal process conditions were performed to be 395 nm of the light wavelength, pH 3.0, 5 mmol/L H2O2 and 1 g/L α-Fe2O3, and the decolorization efficiency of methyl orange was 99.55% at 4 min.This paper reports the role of exogenous glycine betaine (25 and 50 mM GB at a rate of 50 mL per plant) in enhancing NaCl-stress tolerance in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Irrigating plants by simulated saline water, containing 0, 50 and 100 mM sodium chloride (NaCl), significantly reduced the growth dynamics, photosynthetic pigments (i.e., Chl a, Chl b, and carotenoids), membrane stability index (MSI), relative water content (RWC), and pod yield. While, malondialdehyde (MDA), endogenous proline, and glutathione contents, electrolyte leakage (EL), antioxidant defense system, and Na+ accumulation markedly increased upon exposure to NaCl-stress. However, the application of exogenous GB significantly improved salt tolerance of common bean as it increased the antioxidant defense including both enzymatic (i.e., peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase) and nonenzymatic (i.e., proline and glutathione) agents. Consequently, MSI, RWC, EL, and photosynthetic pigments have been improved recording significantly higher values than the control. Moreover, the pod yield increased by 29.8 and 59.4% when plants grown under 50 and 100 mM NaCl, respectively, were sprayed with 25 mM GB. Our results show that GB-induced slat tolerance in common bean plants mainly depends on the osmoregulation effect of GB and to a lesser extent on its antioxidant capacity. Foliar application of GB significantly reduced the accumulation of Na+ and at the same time induced K+ uptake maintaining a higher K+/Na+ ratio. Despite some changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes induced by the application of GB, no consistent contribution in the salt tolerance could be cited in this study. Therefore, we suggest that salt tolerance is largely unrelated to the antioxidant defense ability of GB in common bean. While the potential role of GB in ameliorating salt tolerance is mainly due to the adjustment of ions uptake through limiting Na+ uptake and alternatively increasing K+ accumulation in plant tissues.

Stratigraphic congruence analysis shows that the new phylogenetic consensus tree matches to the stratigraphic distribution of sauropterygians very well. The diversified reptilian fauna and inferred simple food web in the Nanzhang-Yuan'an fauna where L. sanxiaensis was discovered suggest that the Triassic biotic recovery adopted a top-down pattern, in contrast to the prevailing view. Comparison with the Middle Triassic Luoping biota from the same carbonate platform suggests that the Triassic biotic recovery is delayed and healthy ecosystems were not established until the Middle Triassic in South China.We investigated the relationship of changes in Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in South Korea. Records of 10,806,716 adults aged ≥ 20 years without a history of T2D between 2009 and 2015 were retrieved from database of the South Korean National Health Insurance Service and analyzed. Changes in metabolic components were monitored over a two-year period with follow-up occurring at an average of 4.087 years. During the follow-up period, 848,859 individuals were diagnosed with T2D. The risk of diabetes was lowered with a decrease in the number of MetS components at baseline and the second visit (p for trend less then 0.0001). Multivariable-adjusted HRs for incident diabetes were 0.645 among individuals with reduced number of MetS components, 0.54 for those with improvement in elevated fasting glucose, 0.735 for those with improvement in elevated triglycerides, 0.746 for those with improvement in elevated blood pressure, 0.763 for those with improvement in reduced HDL-cholesterol, and 0.92 for those with improvement in abdominal obesity compared with those manifesting them at both time points. The diversified reptilian fauna and inferred simple food web in the Nanzhang-Yuan'an fauna where L. sanxiaensis was discovered suggest that the Triassic biotic recovery adopted a top-down pattern, in contrast to the prevailing view. Comparison with the Middle Triassic Luoping biota from the same carbonate platform suggests that the Triassic biotic recovery is delayed and healthy ecosystems were not established until the Middle Triassic in South China.We investigated the relationship of changes in Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in South Korea. Records of 10,806,716 adults aged ≥ 20 years without a history of T2D between 2009 and 2015 were retrieved from database of the South Korean National Health Insurance Service and analyzed. Changes in metabolic components were monitored over a two-year period with follow-up occurring at an average of 4.087 years. During the follow-up period, 848,859 individuals were diagnosed with T2D. The risk of diabetes was lowered with a decrease in the number of MetS components at baseline and the second visit (p for trend less then 0.0001). Multivariable-adjusted HRs for incident diabetes were 0.645 among individuals with reduced number of MetS components, 0.54 for those with improvement in elevated fasting glucose, 0.735 for those with improvement in elevated triglycerides, 0.746 for those with improvement in elevated blood pressure, 0.763 for those with improvement in reduced HDL-cholesterol, and 0.92 for those with improvement in abdominal obesity compared with those manifesting them at both time points. In conclusion, changes in metabolic syndrome and its components were significantly associated with the development of T2D. However, its effect is only temporary, and successful stabilization requires ongoing Ortho-K wear to maintain the reshaping effect. Corneal crosslinking (CXL) is a commonly-used technique in clinical practice to stabilize corneal shape in keratoconic eyes. However, whether or not CXL can stabilize corneal shape after Ortho-K in normal cornea has not been reported. Therefore, this proof-of-concept study using 2 rhesus monkeys aimed to determine the efficacy of the combined procedure. Self-assembling behavior of the nanocomposite films and atomic-scale interface structure between Pr0.5Ba0.5MnO3 matrix and CeO2 nanopillars have been investigated by advanced electron microscopy techniques.
