Psychological status was assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale and Impact of Events Scale. ANOVA and simple and multiple linear regression tests were used to analyse the data. From the 90 facial burn patients included, the majority were below 34 years of age, female, single or divorced, and unemployed. The mean DMFT was 10.7, and 71% had poor oral hygiene. 56% of the participants had moderate-to-severe anxiety, and 68% had posttraumatic stress disorder. 53% of the participants had moderate-to-severe pain during mouth opening or moving the mandible with a mean score of 41.5. Analyses showed that orofacial pain was associated with less frequent brushing, irregular dental visits, greater DMFT score, and more plaque accumulation (OHI-S). It was also associated with employment status, the severity of a burn, anxiety, and stress. The treatment and management of dental and oral conditions in burn patients need judicious balance in controlling and accurate assessment of the pain and improving psychological problems in burn patients.
Acute postoperative pain delays recovery and increases morbidity and mortality. Opioid therapy is effective but is accompanied by adverse reactions. Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) enables self-administration of analgesics. Oral-PCA is a safe and beneficial alternative to intravenous (IV) PCA. We have developed a novel Oral-PCA device, which enables self-administration of solid pills to the patient's mouth. This is a retrospective study comparing the effectiveness and usability of this novel Oral-PCA with those of IV-PCA.
Medical records of patients who received PCA following gynecology and orthopedic surgeries were analyzed. The control cohort (
= 61) received oxycodone by IV-PCA. The test cohort (
= 44) received oxycodone by Oral-PCA via the PCoA Acute device. Outcome measures include the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score at rest and movement, side effects, technical difficulties, bolus dose administered, and bolus dose requested.

Study subjects (N = 342) were retrospectively enrolled after being confirmed as SARS-CoV-2 positive, and their nasopharyngeal swab (NPS), oropharyngeal swab (OPS), and sputum specimens were restored for SARS-CoV-2 retesting and respiratory pathogen detection. The majority of the subjects (96.5%, N = 330) were confirmed as SARS-CoV-2 positive using NPS/OPS specimens. Among the COVID-19 patients (N = 342), 7.9% (N = 27) and 0.9% (N = 3) were coinfected with respiratory viruses and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, respectively, yielding an 8.8% (N = 30) overall respiratory pathogen coinfection rate. Of the respiratory virus coinfection cases (N = 27), 92.6% (N = 25) were coinfected with a single respiratory virus and 7.4% (N = 2) with two viruses (metapneumovirus/adenovirus and rhinovirus/bocavirus). No triple coinfections of other respiratory viruses or bacteria with SARS-CoV-2 were detected. Respiratory viruses coinfected in the patients with COVID-19 were as follows rhinovirus (N = 7, 2.1%), respiratory syncytial virus A and B (N = 6, 1.8%), non-SARS-CoV-2 coronaviruses (229E, NL63, and OC43, N = 5, 1.5%), metapneumovirus (N = 4, 1.2%), influenza A (N = 3, 0.9%), adenovirus (N = 3, 0.9%), and bocavirus (N = 1, 0.3%). Overall, influenza viruses were the most common cause of RTIs among hospitalized Palestinian patients in the West Bank. Children and elderlies were the most affected with RTIs. The elderly population (≥60 years old) had the highest rates. After influenza A virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) were the most common causes of acute RTIs among hospitalized Palestinian patients. Children showed the highest hospitalization rates for RSV, B. pertussis, adenovirus, enterovirus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. On the other hand, elderlies had the highest rates of influenza. Outbreaks of RTIs occurred mainly during winter (between December and March). The resurgence of B. pertussis in spite of vaccination is alarming and requires further investigation.

Inorganic lead (Pb) is common in the environment, and is toxic to neurological, renal, and cardiovascular systems. Pb exposure influences the epigenome with documented effects on DNA methylation (DNAm). We assessed the impact of low levels of Pb exposure on DNAm among non-miner individuals from two locations in Peru Lima, the capital, and Cerro de Pasco, a highland mining town, to study the effects of Pb exposure on physiological outcomes and DNAm.
Pb levels were measured in whole blood (n=305). Blood leukocyte DNAm was determined for 90 DNA samples using the Illumina MethylationEPIC chip. An epigenome-wide association study was performed to assess the relationship between Pb and DNAm.
Individuals from Cerro de Pasco had higher Pb than individuals from Lima (p-value=2.00E-16). Males had higher Pb than females (p-value=2.36E-04). Pb was positively associated with hemoglobin (p-value=8.60E-04). In Cerro de Pasco, blood Pb decreased with the distance from the mine (p-value=0.04), and association with soil Pb was approaching significance (p-value=0.08). We identified differentially methylated positions (DMPs) associated with genes SOX18, ZMIZ1, and KDM1A linked to neurological function. We also found 45 differentially methylated regions (DMRs), seven of which were associated with genes involved in metal ion binding and nine to neurological function and development.

Microalgae-based technology has been widely reported as a promising alternative to conventional wastewater treatment, since it is a solar-power driven, ecologically friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable reclamation strategy. This review provides fundamental insights into the major mechanisms underpinning microalgae-based antibiotics removal, including bioadsorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation. The critical role of extracellular polymeric substances on bioadsorption and extracellular biodegradation of antibiotics are also covered. Moreover, this review sheds light on the important factors affecting the removal of antibiotics by microalgae, and summarizes several novel approaches to improve the removal efficiency, including acclimation, co-metabolism and microbial consortium. Besides, hybrid systems (such as, microalgae-based technologies combined with the conventional activated sludge, advanced oxidation processes, constructed wetlands, and microbial fuel cells), and genetic engineering are also recommended, which will be feasible for enhanced removal of antibiotics. Finally, this review also highlights the need for further studies aimed at optimizing microalgae-based technology, with emphasis on improving performance and expanding its application in large-scale settings, especially in terms of technical, environmental-friendly and economically competitiveness. Overall, this review summarizes current understanding on microalgae-based technologies for removal of antibiotics and outlines future research directions.We launched the VegeSafe program in 2013 to assist Australians concerned about exposure to contaminants in their soils and gardens. VegeSafe analyses garden soils provided by citizens for trace metals at our laboratory at little to no cost, with easy-to-follow guidance on any intervention required. The response was overwhelming-Australians submitted 17,256 soils from 3,609 homes, and in turn VegeSafe researchers now have unparalleled household-scale data, providing new insights into urban trace metal contamination. The results are sobering, with 35% of homes, particularly those that are older, painted and located in inner cities having soils above the Australian residential guideline (300 mg/kg) for the neurotoxic trace metal lead (Pb). Exposure pathway, blood Pb concentration and vegetable uptake modelling showed the communities in these locations were most at risk. VegeSafe is transformative 94% of participants better understood contaminants, 83% felt safer in their home environment and 40% undertook remedial action based on their results. The two-way nature of this program enables education of citizens about environmental contaminants, advances public health, and delivers impactful science.
Birthweight is a strong predictor of normal growth, healthy development, and survival. Several studies have found associations between temperature, fine particulate matter (PM
), and birth weight. However, the relevant timing of exposures varies between studies and is yet unclear. Therefore, we assessed the difference in term birthweight (TBW) associated with weekly exposure to temperature and PM
throughout 37weeks of gestation.
We included all singleton live term births in Massachusetts, U.S between 2004 and 2015 (n=712,438). Weekly PM
and temperature predictions were estimated on a 1km grid from satellite-based models. We utilized a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to estimate the difference in TBW associated with weekly exposures from the last menstrual period to 37weeks of gestation.
We found a nonlinear association with prenatal temperature exposure. Larger effects were observed in warmer temperatures, where higher temperatures were negatively associated with TBW. Temperature effects wer during routine prenatal visits to increase awareness and target interventions to reduce exposures.

Bartlet's discovery and subsequent similar successful discoveries of stable complexes of noble gases opened new avenues for the storage of noble gases particularly on the new surfaces and their interactions for the storage of these gases. Here, we report the adsorption of light noble gases on polycationic clusters. Our current work not only investigates the interaction behavior of He and Ne with (Sb7Te8)5+ cluster but also explores the saturation limit of the cluster for He and Ne. Stability of various complexes of He and Ne with cationic surfaces is determined by the calculation of their interaction energies which reveal that the adsorption of single and multiple atoms of noble gases at faces of double cubic cluster is comparatively more favorable than at the bond lengths. Electronic properties such as HOMO-LUMO gaps show that complexes of He and Ne are more stable electronically than that of pure cluster, because HOMO-LUMO gap of complexes are higher than the bare polycationic cluster. NCI analysis of iso-surfaces and RDG maps confirms the presence of van der Waals forces between light noble gases and polycationic clusters. Saturation studies reveal that cluster can adsorb eleven He and/or ten Ne atoms with no or minimum distortion in the geometry of cluster. The results showed that Ne has greater tendency to interact with polycationic clusters due to the large electronic cloud and polarizability value than He.The geometries, electronic properties, and chemical bonding of (VH2)n (n=10-30) nanoclusters are systematically investigated by a combination of artificial bee colony optimization with density functional theory calculations. In silico studies such as molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and binding free energy analyses showed greater binding energy values and interaction stability of MA with HDAC8 compared to other phytocompounds of HC9. Interestingly, in vitro validation confirmed the anti-HDAC8 activity of MA. Further, in vitro studies showed that MA significantly decreased the viability of breast and prostate cancer cell lines, thereby confirming its anticancer potential.

Bartlet's discovery and subsequent similar successful discoveries of stable complexes of noble gases opened new avenues for the storage of noble gases particularly on the new surfaces and their interactions for the storage of these gases. Here, we report the adsorption of light noble gases on polycationic clusters. Our current work not only investigates the interaction behavior of He and Ne with (Sb7Te8)5+ cluster but also explores the saturation limit of the cluster for He and Ne. Stability of various complexes of He and Ne with cationic surfaces is determined by the calculation of their interaction energies which reveal that the adsorption of single and multiple atoms of noble gases at faces of double cubic cluster is comparatively more favorable than at the bond lengths. Electronic properties such as HOMO-LUMO gaps show that complexes of He and Ne are more stable electronically than that of pure cluster, because HOMO-LUMO gap of complexes are higher than the bare polycationic cluster. NCI analysis of iso-surfaces and RDG maps confirms the presence of van der Waals forces between light noble gases and polycationic clusters. Saturation studies reveal that cluster can adsorb eleven He and/or ten Ne atoms with no or minimum distortion in the geometry of cluster. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancer types with high mortality rates and displays increased resistance to various stress conditions such as oxidative stress. Conventional therapies have low efficacies due to resistance and off-target effects in HCC. Here we aimed to analyze oxidative stress-related gene expression profiles of HCC cells and identify genes that could be crucial for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. To identify important genes that cause resistance to reactive oxygen species (ROS), a model of oxidative stress upon selenium (Se) deficiency was utilized. The results of transcriptome-wide gene expression data were analyzed in which the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between HCC cell lines that are either resistant or sensitive to Se-deficiency-dependent oxidative stress. These DEGs were further investigated for their importance in oxidative stress resistance by network analysis methods, and 27 genes were defined to have key roles; 16 of which were previously shown to have impact on liver cancer patient survival. Therefore, detailed benchmarking of these algorithms in different scenarios is crucial for the efficient utilization of sequencing technologies. In this study, we compared the performance of twelve pipelines (three mapping and four variant discovery algorithms) with recommended settings to capture single nucleotide variants. We observed significant discrepancy in variant calls among tested pipelines for different heterogeneity levels in real and simulated samples with overall high specificity and low sensitivity. Additional to the individual evaluation of pipelines, we also constructed and tested the performance of pipeline combinations. In these analyses, we observed that certain pipelines complement each other **** better than others and display superior performance than individual pipelines. The central nervous system (CNS) post-traumatic injury can cause severe nerve damage with devastating consequences. However, its pathophysiological mechanisms remain vague. There is still an urgent need for more effective treatments. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that can form covalently closed RNA circles. Through second-generation sequencing technology, microarray analysis, bioinformatics, and other technologies, recent studies have shown that a number of circRNAs are differentially expressed after traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). These circRNAs play important roles in the proliferation, inflammation, and apoptosis in CNS post-traumatic injury. In this review, we summarize the expression and functions of circRNAs in CNS in recent studies, as well as the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction networks. The potential clinical value of circRNAs as a therapeutic target is also discussed.The memristor-based convolutional neural network (CNN) gives full play to the advantages of memristive devices, such as low power consumption, high integration density, and strong network recognition capability. Consequently, it is very suitable for building a wearable embedded application system and has broad application prospects in image classification, speech recognition, and other fields. However, limited by the manufacturing process of memristive devices, high-precision weight devices are currently difficult to be applied in large-scale. In the same time, high-precision neuron activation function also further increases the complexity of network hardware implementation. In response to this, this paper proposes a configurable full-binary convolutional neural network (CFB-CNN) architecture, whose inputs, weights, and neurons are all binary values. The neurons are proportionally configured to two modes for different non-ideal situations. The architecture performance is verified based on the MNIST data set, and the influence of device yield and resistance fluctuations under different neuron configurations on network performance is also analyzed. The results show that the recognition accuracy of the 2-layer network is about 98.2%. When the yield rate is about 64% and the hidden neuron mode is configured as -1 and +1, namely ±1 MD, the CFB-CNN architecture achieves about 91.28% recognition accuracy. Whereas the resistance variation is about 26% and the hidden neuron mode configuration is 0 and 1, namely 01 MD, the CFB-CNN architecture gains about 93.43% recognition accuracy. Furthermore, memristors have been demonstrated as one of the most promising devices in neuromorphic computing for its synaptic plasticity. Therefore, the CFB-CNN architecture based on memristor is SNN-compatible, which is verified using the number of pulses to encode pixel values in this paper.
Previous research using non-invasive (magnetoencephalography, MEG) and invasive (electrocorticography, ECoG) neural recordings has demonstrated the progressive and hierarchical representation and processing of complex multi-talker auditory scenes in the auditory cortex. Early responses (<85 ms) in primary-like areas appear to represent the individual talkers with almost equal fidelity and are independent of attention in normal-hearing (NH) listeners. However, late responses (>85 ms) in higher-order non-primary areas selectively represent the attended talker with significantly higher fidelity than unattended talkers in NH and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. Motivated by these findings, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a noise reduction scheme (NR) in a commercial hearing aid (HA) on the representation of complex multi-talker auditory scenes in distinct hierarchical stages of the auditory cortex by using high-density electroencephalography (EEG).

Brain disorders are gradually becoming the leading cause of death worldwide. However, the lack of knowledge of brain disease's underlying mechanisms and ineffective neuropharmacological therapy have led to further exploration of optimal treatments and brain monitoring techniques.
This study aims to review the current state of brain disorders, which utilize transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) and daily usable noninvasive neuroimaging techniques. Furthermore, the second goal of this study is to highlight available gaps and provide a comprehensive guideline for further investigation.
A systematic search was conducted of the PubMed and Web of Science databases from January 2000 to October 2020 using relevant keywords. Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy were selected as noninvasive neuroimaging modalities. Nine brain disorders were investigated in this study, including Alzheimer's disease, depression, autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorderng tES as a therapy could be an effective treatment for cognitive and neurological brain disorders. The central nervous system (CNS) post-traumatic injury can cause severe nerve damage with devastating consequences. However, its pathophysiological mechanisms remain vague. There is still an urgent need for more effective treatments. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that can form covalently closed RNA circles. Through second-generation sequencing technology, microarray analysis, bioinformatics, and other technologies, recent studies have shown that a number of circRNAs are differentially expressed after traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). These circRNAs play important roles in the proliferation, inflammation, and apoptosis in CNS post-traumatic injury. In this review, we summarize the expression and functions of circRNAs in CNS in recent studies, as well as the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction networks. In response to this, this paper proposes a configurable full-binary convolutional neural network (CFB-CNN) architecture, whose inputs, weights, and neurons are all binary values. The neurons are proportionally configured to two modes for different non-ideal situations. The architecture performance is verified based on the MNIST data set, and the influence of device yield and resistance fluctuations under different neuron configurations on network performance is also analyzed. The results show that the recognition accuracy of the 2-layer network is about 98.2%. When the yield rate is about 64% and the hidden neuron mode is configured as -1 and +1, namely ±1 MD, the CFB-CNN architecture achieves about 91.28% recognition accuracy. Whereas the resistance variation is about 26% and the hidden neuron mode configuration is 0 and 1, namely 01 MD, the CFB-CNN architecture gains about 93.43% recognition accuracy. Using the TCS-LA, Panama (70 pts), Uruguay (68 pts) and Ecuador (61 pts) exhibited the strongest tobacco control policies, while Guatemala (32 pts), Bolivia (30 pts) and Dominican Republic (29 pts) have implemented a lower number of tobacco control policies. Eight countries reached 50% of the TCS-LA total possible score, indicating a relatively good implementation level of tobacco control policies.

Adolescence represents a critical period for the onset of eating disorders (EDs). The present study aimed to provide the prevalence of individuals at risk for EDs psychopathology in a representative population of adolescents aged 14-19 and to characterize this population regarding interpersonal and psychological factors.
The percentage of participants at risk for EDs in a representative high school population was assessed through the SCOFF screening questionnaire (cut-off score 3) in the total sample (N 6551) and in gender-based subgroups for different body mass index (BMI) categories. Odds ratios for being at risk of ED (SCOFF ≥ 3) were esteemed in a multivariable analysis including self-reported parental education, quality of family and peer relationships, bullying victimization, age at first sexual intercourse, and psychological distress.
A SCOFF score ≥ 3 was found in 31.0% of participants (boys 19.4%; girls 44.6%), with a greater prevalence among higher BMI categories. Bad family relationships, being bullied, having the first sexual intercourse before the age of 14, and experiencing high distress were associated with this risk condition. Among girls, bad peer relationships were associated with a low-risk SCOFF score.
A remarkable percentage of adolescents reported significant body image or eating concerns. To assess the value of the texture analysis of fluorine- F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography ( F-FDG-PET/CT) in predicting the treatment response of postoperative recurrent or metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma (POR/M-OSCC) treated with cetuximab. A total of 14 patients undergoing F-FDG-PET/CT with POR/M-OSCC were divided into the responder and non-responder groups according to cetuximab response by Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST). The regions of interest (ROI) were set at the POR/M-OSCC lesions with the highest uptake of F-FDG, and the volumetric and texture features were analyzed. The features with correlation coefficient of 0.6 or more were further evaluated using the logistic regression analysis to create a model. The SHAPE , SHAPE , metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and gray-level run-length matrix run-length nonuniformity (GLRLM ) were significantly different between the responder (n = 6) and non-responder (n = 8) groups (p = 0.044, 0.042, 0.047, and 0.012, respectively). The model's area under the curve (AUC) was found to be 0.83, 0.83, 0.79, and 0.92, respectively. The heatmap with PET feature dendrogram showed four distinct clusters including them in patient's responder and non-responder groups. Higher MTV, GLRLM , SHAPE , and SHAPE in F-FDG-PET images may have the prediction values for treatment response with POR/M-OSCC treated with cetuximab. Adolescence represents a critical period for the onset of eating disorders (EDs). The present study aimed to provide the prevalence of individuals at risk for EDs psychopathology in a representative population of adolescents aged 14-19 and to characterize this population regarding interpersonal and psychological factors. The percentage of participants at risk for EDs in a representative high school population was assessed through the SCOFF screening questionnaire (cut-off score 3) in the total sample (N 6551) and in gender-based subgroups for different body mass index (BMI) categories. Odds ratios for being at risk of ED (SCOFF ≥ 3) were esteemed in a multivariable analysis including self-reported parental education, quality of family and peer relationships, bullying victimization, age at first sexual intercourse, and psychological distress. A SCOFF score ≥ 3 was found in 31.0% of participants (boys 19.4%; girls 44.6%), with a greater prevalence among higher BMI categories. Bad family relationships, being bullied, having the first sexual intercourse before the age of 14, and experiencing high distress were associated with this risk condition. Telephone semi-structured interviews with pediatric (n = 15) and adult (n = 11) epileptologists at leading U.S. epilepsy centers were used to collect data about the transition process. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, systematically coded using thematic analysis by two independent researchers, and subsequently checked for agreement during regular meetings. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ziftomenib.html Participants were on average 46 years old (SD = 7.4), 50% male, 91% Non-Hispanic and 85% Caucasian; all had completed a formal epilepsy or clinical neurophysiology fellowship (mean = 11 years since terminal training) and were employed at a comprehensive epilepsy center. Despite challenges, epilepsy clinicians spontaneously expressed stress, empathy, and commitment to providing the best possible care.
The aim of this study was to determine whether gender influences the prediction of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in persons with newly diagnosed epilepsy (NDE).
This was a 1-year longitudinal study. Persons with NDE were assessed with the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31), the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), the Stigma Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with interaction terms was used.
Among 134 adults with NDE, there were no gender differences in the scores of the QOLIE-31 and its subscales. A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the HADS-anxiety scores at diagnosis (p = 0.005) and seizure recurrence after diagnosis (p = 0.050) negatively predicted QOLIE-31 scores in persons with NDE. There were significant effects of the gender interaction with seizure recurrence (F = 8.745, p = 0.004, partial eta
= 0.066) and antiepileptic drug (AED) polytherapy (F = 6.320, p = 0.013, partial eta
= 0.049) in the adjusted model. Specifically, seizure recurrence negatively predicted the QOLIE-31 scores only in men. By contrast, AED polytherapy negatively predicted the QOLIE-31 scores only in women.

To evaluate the efficacy of cortical responsive neurostimulation (CRN) in a male baboon with epilepsy and with genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE), as well as the alteration of seizure patterns and their circadian rhythms due to treatment.
The baboon was implanted with two subdural frontoparietal strips, bridging the medial central sulci bilaterally. Electrocorticography (ECoG) data were downloaded daily during a three-month baseline, then every 2-3 days over a five-month treatment period. Long episodes, reflecting ictal or interictal epileptic discharges, were also quantified.
Twenty-three generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) and 2 episodes of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) were recorded at baseline (median 8 events/month), whereas 26 GTCS were recorded under treatment (median 5/month). Similarly, daily indices of long episodes decreased from 0.46 at baseline to 0.29 with treatment. Ictal ECoG patterns and the circadian distribution of GTCS were also altered by RNS therapy.

Future studies targeting the thalamic nuclei, or combining cortical and subcortical sites, may further improve detection and control of GTCS as well as other generalized seizure types. Parent caregivers often play vital roles in the care of adolescents with epilepsy (AWE) in resource-restricted settings; however, little is known about the burden borne by these parents. This study investigated the burden perceived by parents of AWE and described the explanatory factors.
An equal number (n = 121) of age- and gender-matched parent caregivers of AWE (cases) and parents of adolescents with sickle cell disease (comparison group) were interviewed with the Parent Illness Intrusiveness Rating Scale to assess disruptions in their relationships and lifestyle. Parents of AWE were assessed for psychological distress with the 12-item General Health Questionnaire, and AWE were interviewed with the Hospital Depression-Anxiety Scale.
The majority of the cases and the comparison group were mothers (76%), with mean (SD) ages of 44.11 (SD = 6.92) versus 43.59 (SD = 6.39) years, respectively. The prevalence rate of psychological distress in cases was 38%, and depressive-anxiety symptom was prevalent in 39.
