Object formation is considered the aim of perceptual organization, but such a proposition has been neglected in empirical studies. In the current study, we investigated the role of object formation in configural superiority. Essentially, discrimination on bar orientations was enhanced by adding a right angle to each of the bars. Such facilitation is due to the emergent feature (EF) of closure formed by combining the bars with right angles. To study object formation, visual stimuli were generated by random dot stereograms to form objects or holes in 3D. TMS neuronavigation with on-line display of the induced electric field (E-field) has the potential to improve quantitative targeting and dosing of stimulation, but present commercially available solutions are limited by simplified approximations.
Developing a near real-time method for accurate approximation of TMS induced E-fields with subject-specific high-resolution surface-based head models that can be utilized for TMS navigation.
Magnetic dipoles are placed on a closed surface enclosing an MRI-based head model of the subject to define a set of basis functions for the incident and total E-fields that define the subject's Magnetic Stimulation Profile (MSP). The near real-time speed is achieved by recognizing that the total E-field of the coil only depends on the incident E-field and the conductivity boundary geometry. The total E-field for any coil position can be obtained by matching the incident field of the stationary dipole basis set with the incident E-field of the moving coil and applying the same basis coefficients to the total E-field basis functions.
Comparison of the MSP-based approximation with an established TMS solver shows great agreement in the E-field amplitude (relative maximum error around 5%) and the spatial distribution patterns (correlation >98%). Computation of the E-field took ~100 ms on a cortical surface mesh with 120k facets.
The numerical accuracy and speed of the MSP approximation method make it well suited for a wide range of computational tasks including interactive planning, targeting, dosing, and visualization of the intracranial E-fields for near real-time guidance of coil positioning.

However, inter-site studies have noted systematic differences between vendors in T2 maps computed via standard exponential fitting due to imperfect slice refocusing, different refocusing angles and transmit field (B1+) inhomogeneity. We examine T2 mapping at 3T across 13 sites and two vendors in healthy volunteers from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database using both a standard exponential and a Bloch modelling approach. The standard exponential approach resulted in highly variable T2 values across different sites and vendors. The two-echo fitting method based on Bloch equation modelling of the pulse sequence with prior knowledge of the nominal refocusing angles, slice profiles, and estimated B1+ maps yielded similar T2 values across sites and vendors by accounting for the effects of indirect and stimulated echoes. By modelling the actual refocusing angles used, T2 quantification from PD and T2-weighted images can be applied in studies across multiple sites and vendors.Drugs affecting neuromodulation, for example by dopamine or acetylcholine, take centre stage among therapeutic strategies in psychiatry. An important goal for clinical diagnostics is to exploit this effect in the reverse direction, i.e., to infer the status of specific neuromodulatory systems from electrophysiological measures. In this study, we provide proof-of-concept that the functional status of cholinergic (specifically muscarinic) receptors can be inferred from electrophysiological data using generative (dynamic causal) models. To this end, we used epidural EEG recordings over two auditory cortical regions during a mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm in rats. All animals were treated, across sessions, with muscarinic receptor agonists and antagonists at different doses. Together with a placebo condition, this resulted in five levels of muscarinic receptor status. Using a dynamic that can serve as "computational assays" and infer the status of specific neuromodulatory systems in individual patients. This translational neuromodeling strategy has great promise for electrophysiological data in particular but requires careful validation. The present study demonstrates that the functional status of cholinergic (muscarinic) receptors can be inferred from electrophysiological data using dynamic causal models of neural circuits. While accuracy needs to be enhanced and our results must be replicated in larger samples, our current results provide proof-of-concept for computational assays of muscarinic function using EEG.

Our results unravel UPS-dependent mechanisms and the role of an MREL57-WDL7 module in microtubule disassembly and stomatal closure in response to drought stress and ABA.Here we show that FTO as an N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA demethylase is degraded by selective autophagy, which is impaired by low-level arsenic exposure to promote tumorigenesis. We found that in arsenic-associated human skin lesions, FTO is upregulated, while m6A RNA methylation is downregulated. In keratinocytes, chronic relevant low-level arsenic exposure upregulated FTO, downregulated m6A RNA methylation, and induced malignant transformation and tumorigenesis. FTO deletion inhibited arsenic-induced tumorigenesis. Moreover, in ****, epidermis-specific FTO deletion prevented skin tumorigenesis induced by arsenic and UVB irradiation. Targeting FTO genetically or pharmacologically inhibits the tumorigenicity of arsenic-transformed tumor cells. We identified NEDD4L as the m6A-modified gene target of FTO. Finally, arsenic stabilizes FTO protein through inhibiting p62-mediated selective autophagy. FTO upregulation can in turn inhibit autophagy, leading to a positive feedback loop to maintain FTO accumulation. We explore how exploiting quantitative mathematical and computational approaches, alongside state-of-the-art regenerative medicine research, can lead to therapies that potentially can be more rapidly translated into the clinic.The RNA-sensing pathway contributes to type I interferon (IFN) production induced by DNA damaging agents. However, the potential involvement of RNA sensors in DNA repair is unknown. Here, we found that retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I), a key cytosolic RNA sensor that recognizes RNA virus and initiates the MAVS-IRF3-type I IFN signaling cascade, is recruited to double-stranded breaks (DSBs) and suppresses non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). Mechanistically, RIG-I interacts with XRCC4, and the RIG-I/XRCC4 interaction impedes the formation of XRCC4/LIG4/XLF complex at DSBs. High expression of RIG-I compromises DNA repair and sensitizes cancer cells to irradiation treatment. In contrast, depletion of RIG-I renders cells resistant to irradiation in vitro and in vivo. In addition, this mechanism suggests a protective role of RIG-I in hindering retrovirus integration into the host genome by suppressing the NHEJ pathway. Reciprocally, XRCC4, while suppressed for its DNA repair function, has a critical role in RIG-I immune signaling through RIG-I interaction. XRCC4 promotes RIG-I signaling by enhancing oligomerization and ubiquitination of RIG-I, thereby suppressing RNA virus replication in host cells. Within this review, we will present a comprehensive overview of the data linking synuclein-associated Lewy pathology with intracellular dysfunction. We first present the alterations in neuronal proteins and transcriptome associated with LBs in postmortem human PD tissue. We next compare these findings to those associated with LB-like inclusions initiated by in vitro exposure to α-syn preformed fibrils (PFFs) and highlight the profound and relatively unique reduction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in this model. Finally, we discuss the multitude of ways in which BDNF offers the potential to exert disease-modifying effects on the basal ganglia. What remains unknown is the potential for BDNF to mitigate inclusion-associated dysfunction within the context of synucleinopathy. Collectively, this review reiterates the merit of using the PFF model as a tool to understand the physiological changes associated with LBs, while highlighting the neuroprotective potential of harnessing endogenous BDNF.Given that a substantial proportion of the subgroup of COVID-19 patients that face a severe disease course are younger than 60 years, it is critical to understand the disease-specific characteristics of young COVID-19 patients. The tumorsphere-formation assay has been used for the identification of cancer stem cell. Interleukin-8 induces the formation of larger tumorspheres in Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cells, suggesting cancer stem cell enrichment. In this work, we aimed to study the phenotypic and functional characteristics of the cells present within the tumorspheres of MCF-7 cells previously treated with interleukin-8. MCF-7 cells treated for 5 days or not with this cytokine were further cultivated in ultralow attachment plates for another 5 days to allow tumorspheres formation. We showed that the enhanced sphere formation by MCF-7 cells was not a consequence of higher cell proliferation by interleukin-8 stimulation. Despite maintaining an epithelial-mesenchymal transition phenotype with the presence of epithelial and mesenchymal markers, basic stemness properties were impaired in tumorspheres and in those treated with interleukin-8, while others were increased. Self-renewal capacity was increased in interleukin-8-treated cells only in the first generation of tumorspheres but was not sustained in consecutive assays. Accordingly, self-renewal and reprogramming gene expression, differentiation capacity to adipocytes, and clonogenicity were also impaired. Specifically, this review connects existing frameworks for race and trauma and integrates literature that examines Latinx or Hispanic populations that have experienced discrimination, bias, or hate crime as a result of their identity or perceived identity. The importance of situating bias or hate events within the trauma literature stems from a lack of overall formal evaluation of these events, and how these occurrences are historically overlooked as a traumatic stressor. Objectives The purpose of this analysis is to (1) describe characteristics of middle-aged US adults who report misusing prescription and illicit drugs and (2) evaluate if misusing prescription opioids increases risk of misusing other drugs. The tumorsphere-formation assay has been used for the identification of cancer stem cell. Interleukin-8 induces the formation of larger tumorspheres in Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cells, suggesting cancer stem cell enrichment. In this work, we aimed to study the phenotypic and functional characteristics of the cells present within the tumorspheres of MCF-7 cells previously treated with interleukin-8. MCF-7 cells treated for 5 days or not with this cytokine were further cultivated in ultralow attachment plates for another 5 days to allow tumorspheres formation. We showed that the enhanced sphere formation by MCF-7 cells was not a consequence of higher cell proliferation by interleukin-8 stimulation. This review aims to summarize the current body of literature on the intersection of race-motivated hate crime and trauma responses within Latinx community. To do so, the theoretical foundation for this inquiry will build from a race-based trauma perspective. Specifically, this review connects existing frameworks for race and trauma and integrates literature that examines Latinx or Hispanic populations that have experienced discrimination, bias, or hate crime as a result of their identity or perceived identity. The importance of situating bias or hate events within the trauma literature stems from a lack of overall formal evaluation of these events, and how these occurrences are historically overlooked as a traumatic stressor. The findings of this review suggest that (1) experiencing racially motivated victimization can cause adverse mental and physical health outcomes in Latinxs and (2) currently, there is only one study that has examined the impact of hate crime on Latinxs in the United States. METHODS This cohort study is based on prospectively collected data from Swedvasc, a nationwide vascular registry, including all 29 hospitals performing surgery for RAAA in Sweden (3 district, 19 county, and 7 university hospitals) during 2013 to 2015. All 702 patients operated on for RAAA during this time were included. Open surgery and endovascular repair, analyzed on the basis of individual patient repair (OAR vs EVAR) and hospital repair practice (OAR-only vs OAR/EVAR), were compared for short-term and midterm adjusted survival (0-90 days and 3 months-3 years). RESULTS Endovascular repair was used for 37% (260/702) of the aneurysms. The adjusted hazard ratio after OAR was 1.30 (0.95-1.77; P = .098; n = 702) for 0 to 90 days and 0.63 (0.43-0.93; P = .021; N = 491) for 3 months to 3 years of follow-up compared with EVAR. The adjusted hazard ratio for a practice of OAR-only was 0.73 (0.54-1.00; P = .047; n = 702) for 0 to 90 days and 0.68 (0.45-1.05; P = .080; n = 491) for 3 months to 3 years of follow-up compared with a practice of OAR/EVAR. No interaction between repair practice and short-term survival could be shown for either sex or age. In this study, we searched for metabolic alterations which reflect different levels within the condition of normoalbuminuria. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS Urine from 48 hypertensive patients under chronic RAS suppression was analysed. They were classified according to the albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) into 3groups Normoalbuminuria ( less then 10mg/g); high-normal (10-30mg/g in men, or 20-40mg/g in women); and moderately high albuminuria (microalbuminuria, 30-200mg/g or 40-300mg/g, respectively). The metabolome was analysed by mass spectrometry and a correlation analysis was performed between altered metabolite levels and ACR. RESULTS Oxaloacetate, 3-ureidopropionate, guanidoacetate and malate show significant variation between the normo and micro groups. Additionally, these metabolites are able to differentiate between patients in the normo and high-normal range. A significant correlation between metabolites and ACR was found. Observed variations point to alterations in the energy metabolism already in patients with albuminuria in the high-normal range. CONCLUSIONS The association between the molecular panel consisting of 3-ureidopropionate, oxaloacetate, malate and guanidoacetate and different levels of albuminuria is confirmed. The more diverse and complex adult musculature is also an attractive model to study some aspects of the myogenic process. The more intense research effort focusing on adult myogenesis since early this century has added greatly to our knowledge. We review here what we know about the development of adult muscles, from the specification and diversification of the adult muscle precursors to their final differentiation. The formation of a functional contractile unit requires integrating multiple tissue interactions. We therefore also describe how muscle cells interrelate with the tendons and the nervous and tracheal systems in the course of development. BACKGROUND Unconstrained tripolar articulations have been theorized to increase hip stability. The purpose of this study is to report the performance of tripolar articulations in revision THA and identify factors associated with success and failure. METHODS Between 1994 and 2016, 67 revision THAs were performed with an unconstrained tripolar articulation. Mean follow-up was 5.4 years. Patient charts were retrospectively reviewed emphasizing factors associated with risk of instability. There were 21 patients with neither a history of instability (HI) nor abductor insufficiency (AI), 20 patients with HI alone, 13 with AI alone, and 13 had both HI and AI. RESULTS Twelve THAs sustained at least one postrevision dislocation at an average of 2.1 years. One bipolar dissociation occurred early (1.2 y). Nine hips had a re-revision to address these complications. Survival free from dislocation at 2, 5, and 10 years was 88%, 85%, and 74%, respectively. Critically ill patients with liver disease commonly present to the intensive care unit (ICU) with need for prolonged ventilation, difficult weaning, and refractory coagulopathy. These patients experience both bleeding and thrombotic complications with a precariously balanced state of coagulopathy. The purpose of this study was to assess the bleeding complications of tracheostomy in critically ill patients with liver disease.
A retrospective study was conducted in liver ICU of a tertiary teaching institute. Medical records were analyzed to assess postprocedure complication rate among 73 critically ill liver disease patients who had undergone tracheostomy during the period of October 2017 to September 2018.
Ten out of 73 patients (13%) required transfusion of blood products after 12 h of procedure, despite thromboelastography (TEG)-based correction prior to procedure. Of these, 7 patients (9%) underwent surgical tracheostomy (ST) and three patients (4%) underwent percutaneous tracheostomy. Statistically no significant difference in bleeding was seen among the two groups, but a rising trend was seen with the ST group (
= 0.52). None of the patients experienced procedure-related pneumothorax and subcutaneous emphysema, as observed in the chest X-ray.
We conclude that coagulopathy should not be deterrence for the performance of tracheostomy in critically ill patients with liver disease. Adequate clotting support guided by the global tests of coagulation, such as TEG, ensures lesser incidence of bleeding.

The need to evacuate the chest after a penetrating wound was first recognized in the 18
century. Most thoracic injuries are treated with tube thoracostomy (TT) which refers to the insertion of a TT into the pleural cavity to drain air, blood, pus, or other fluids. However, TT has been challenged in the trauma care due to insertional, positional, or infective complications.
A retrospective study of all trauma patients who had TT insertion from 2008 to 2014 was conducted based on the trauma registry data to describe patient characteristics, injury characteristics, management, and outcomes. The complication incidences per TT before (2008) and after (2009-2014) the implementation of standard protocol were compared.
During the study period, 804 patients were managed with 1004 TT procedures. The mean age was 34 years, and majority (91%) was males. Motor vehicle crash (43%) was the main mechanism of injury. Mean injury severity score was 22. The rib fractures (68%) were more frequent followed by pneumothorax (49%). Nearly 72% of patients received antibiotic coverage before insertion. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/az20.html The complications developed per TT reduced over the years from 2008 to 2014 (12.6% to 4.4%). The average complication per TT after the protocol implementation (2009-2014) reduced by 7% when compared to the duration before implementation (2008).
The present study shows that standardized management of trauma patients who undergo TT results in a reduction in complications, helps improve patient flow, and ensures the proper management of resources in our high-volume trauma center.

Epidemiological analysis of traffic accidents can provide information for future plans to lower the cost and burden of road traffic accidents (RTAs). This study was aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of patients with RTAs.
We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of RTA patients presenting in 2016 to the Emergency Department at Shahid Bahonar Medical Education Center in Kerman, Iran. A checklist including variables such as age, sex, month, in which the patient referred, final outcome, overall cost and the site of injury used to collect data. The diagnostic criteria were in accordance to ICD 10.
Of the total of 3277 patients who were studied, 2713 (82.78%) were men and 564 (16.66%) were women. Most of the accidents occurred at the age group of 16-30 years and the average cost of treatment in the hospital was 2152.45 USD. The most affected area was the lower limb. The majority of accidents occurred in spring and summer. The mortality rate was (2.74%).
Injuries and deaths due to RTAs are a major public health problem, especially in young age groups. Therefore, more preventive programs targeting young adults should be considered to reduce the burden of RTAs.

The purpose of this study was to assess the bleeding complications of tracheostomy in critically ill patients with liver disease. A retrospective study was conducted in liver ICU of a tertiary teaching institute. Medical records were analyzed to assess postprocedure complication rate among 73 critically ill liver disease patients who had undergone tracheostomy during the period of October 2017 to September 2018. Ten out of 73 patients (13%) required transfusion of blood products after 12 h of procedure, despite thromboelastography (TEG)-based correction prior to procedure. Of these, 7 patients (9%) underwent surgical tracheostomy (ST) and three patients (4%) underwent percutaneous tracheostomy. Statistically no significant difference in bleeding was seen among the two groups, but a rising trend was seen with the ST group ( = 0.52). Most thoracic injuries are treated with tube thoracostomy (TT) which refers to the insertion of a TT into the pleural cavity to drain air, blood, pus, or other fluids. However, TT has been challenged in the trauma care due to insertional, positional, or infective complications. A retrospective study of all trauma patients who had TT insertion from 2008 to 2014 was conducted based on the trauma registry data to describe patient characteristics, injury characteristics, management, and outcomes. The complication incidences per TT before (2008) and after (2009-2014) the implementation of standard protocol were compared. This study was aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of patients with RTAs. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of RTA patients presenting in 2016 to the Emergency Department at Shahid Bahonar Medical Education Center in Kerman, Iran. A checklist including variables such as age, sex, month, in which the patient referred, final outcome, overall cost and the site of injury used to collect data. The diagnostic criteria were in accordance to ICD 10. Of the total of 3277 patients who were studied, 2713 (82.78%) were men and 564 (16.66%) were women. Most of the accidents occurred at the age group of 16-30 years and the average cost of treatment in the hospital was 2152.45 USD. The most affected area was the lower limb. BACKGROUND Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a novel inflammatory marker that has been used to predict various inflammation-related diseases. This study aims to explore the association between MHR and prevalent hyperuricemia in a rural Chinese population. METHODS 8163 eligible participants (mean age 54.13 years, males 45.71%) from northeast China were enrolled in this cross-sectional study between 2012 to 2013. MHR was determined as blood monocyte count ratio to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. RESULTS The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 12.86%. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, per SD increase of MHR caused a 25.2% additional risk for hyperuricemia, and the top quartile of MHR had an 82.9% increased risk for hyperuricemia compared with the bottom quartile. Additionally, smooth curve fitting and subgroup analyses showed a linear and robust association between MHR and prevalent hyperuricemia respectively. Finally, after introducing MHR into the established model of risk factors, the AUC displayed a significant improvement (0.718 vs 0.724, p = 0.008). Furthermore, Category-free net reclassification improvement (0.160, 95% CI 0.096-0.224, P less then 0.001) and integrated discrimination improvement (0.003, 95% CI 0.002-0.005, P less then 0.001) also demonstrated significant improvements. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that MHR was positively and independently correlated with prevalent hyperuricemia among rural Chinese adults. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the trend of malaria prevalence in Wolkite health center, Gurage zone, Southern Central Ethiopia from 2015 to 2018. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence of malaria by reviewing the malaria registration laboratory logbook at Wolkite health center from 2015 to 2018. For all patients, blood films were done for the detection of malaria cases. All the socio-demographic data, year, month and malaria data were collected using a predesigned data collection sheet from January to March, 2019. RESULTS From a 121,230 clinically malaria suspected patients, the overall prevalence of microscopically confirmed cases were 8.56% (n = 10,379/121,230). Plasmodium vivax was the most predominant species accounted for 69.7% (n = 7237/10,379) followed by Plasmodium falciparum 29.3% (n = 3044/10,379). Age group > 15 years old were more affected by malaria accounting 54% (n = 5609/10,379) and malaria cases regarding sex were proportional (51.1% of males and 48.3% of female). Among the catchment areas, a higher number of malaria prevalence was recorded in the Wolkite town 66.2% (n = 0.6538/10,379). Higher malaria cases were shown in the season of Spring 29.8% (n = 3096/10,379) while lower cases 20.4% (n = 2123/10,379) were seen in the Winter season. CONCLUSION The prevalence of malaria in Wolkite health center showed a consistent downward trend from the year of 2015-2018. Importantly, the higher prevalence of P. vivax seems overlooked in the study area. The organic fraction of MSW (OMSW) typically comprises ~ 50% lignocellulose-rich material but is underexplored as a biomanufacturing feedstock due to its highly inconsistent and heterogeneous composition. This study sought to overcome the limitations associated with studying MSW-derived feedstocks by using OMSW produced from a realistic and reproducible MSW mixture on a commercial autoclave system. The resulting OMSW fibre was enzymatically hydrolysed and used to screen diverse microorganisms of biotechnological interest to identify robust species capable of fermenting this complex feedstock. RESULTS The autoclave pre-treated OMSW fibre contained a polysaccharide fraction comprising 38% cellulose and 4% hemicellulose. Enzymatic hydrolysate of OMSW fibre was high in D-glucose (5.5%uld theoretically produce 136 kg and 139 kg of ethanol and 91 kg of triacylglycerol (TAG) per tonne of OMSW. CONCLUSIONS Developing an integrated biorefinery around MSW has the potential to significantly alleviate the environmental burden of current waste management practices. Substrate-oriented screening of a representative and reproducible OMSW-derived fibre identified microorganisms intrinsically suited to growth on OMSW hydrolysates. These species are promising candidates for developing an MSW biorefining platform and provide a foundation for future studies aiming to valorise this underexplored feedstock.

A coupling reaction between sulfonyl radicals and silver-based carbenes has been well established. This simple radical-carbene coupling (RCC) process provided an efficient approach to a variety of β-carbonyl arylsulfones from sodium arylsulfinates and diazo compounds, and was characterized by wide substrate scope, easy scale-up, simple manipulation, accessible starting materials, and mild reaction conditions.We synthesized a novel Lewis acidic aminoborane containing a phenothiazyl substituent and demonstrated its potential to catalytically promote the dehydrocoupling of tin hydrides. The main aim of this paper is to provide a mechanistic explanation as to why the effectiveness of stretching is limited in children with CP and consider clinically relevant means by which this shortcoming can be tackled. To do this, we review the current literature regarding muscle and tendon plasticity in response to stretching in children with CP. First, we discuss how muscle and tendon interact based on their morphology and mechanical properties to provide a certain range of motion at the joint. We then consider the effect of traditional stretching exercises on these muscle and tendon properties. Finally, we examine possible strategies to increase the effectiveness of stretching therapies and we highlight areas of further research that have the potential to improve the outcome of non-invasive interventions in children with cerebral palsy. Experiments were carried out in isolated VSMCs from mdx (a murine model of DMD) and congenic C57BL/10SnJ Wt ****. We found elevated [Ca2+]i and [Na+]i in VSMCs from mdx **** compared to Wt. Exposure to 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol (OAG), a TRPC3 and TRPC6 channel activator, induced a greater elevation of [Ca2+]i and [Na+]i in mdx than Wt VSMCs. The OAG induced increases in [Ca2+]i could be abolished by either removal of extracellular Ca2+ or by SAR7334, a blocker of TRPC3 and TRPC 6 channels in both genotypes. At 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks of untreated diabetes, left ventricular (LV) function was assessed by echocardiography before post-mortem quantification of markers of LV cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, collagen deposition, DNA fragmentation, and changes in components of the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP) were assessed. Blood glucose and HbAl O-GlcNAcylation, were increased by 16 weeks of diabetes. This is the first study to define the progression of cardiac markers contributing to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy in a mouse model of T1D, confirming multiple pathways contribute to disease progression at various time points. Respite care can provide a chance for family caregivers to take a temporary and flexible break from their long-term caregiving work. Despite its beneficial aspects and value, there is little research on how technology might mitigate barriers to using respite care. The purpose of this paper is to understand the current practices and challenges that people face within the ecosystem of respite care work in the context of in-home care. Based on an in-depth interview study of 18 primary family caregivers, respite family caregivers, and respite professional caregivers, we identified different relationships, phases, and needs of each stakeholder and issues of trust and information sharing that need improvement. We discuss design considerations on how future information and communication technologies (ICTs) could mitigate the barriers identified in this work.Many stakeholders can be involved in supporting a child's development, including parents, pediatricians, and educators. These stakeholders struggle to collaborate, and experts suggest that health information technology could improve their communication. Trust, based on perceptions of competence, benevolence, and integrity is fundamental to supporting information sharing, so information technologies should address trust between stakeholders. We engaged 75 parents and 60 healthcare workers with two surveys to explore this topic. We first elicited the types of information parents and healthcare workers use to form perceptions of competence, benevolence, and integrity. We then designed and tested user profile prototypes listing the elicited information to see if it builds trust in previously unknown professionals. We discovered that providing information related to personal characteristics, relationships, professional experience, and workplace practices can support trust and the sharing of information. This work has implications for designing informative electronic user interfaces to support interprofessional trust.Patient-centered care is an essential component of quality health care. To support patient-centered care initiatives at our institution, we created a feature in our EHR to centrally view information about the patient's values, goals and preferences. We applied user-centered design methods to ensure that the aggregate view was easy to use and would meet user needs. We created a six-week plan to iterate through increasingly detailed design ****-ups. We defined 7 user stories that later served as a basis for user testing scripts. We conducted user testing on our third design iteration; we reached theme saturation with 8 testing sessions. We incorporated findings into the fourth design (week 6) but continued to refine the design in parallel to development (through week 20+). The advance directives section required the most attention. We will use a pilot and additional user testing to validate the design and to inform future versions.Research has shown that health outcomes are significantly driven by patient's social and economic needs and environment, commonly referred to as the social determinants of health (SDoH). Standardized documentation of social and economic needs in healthcare are underutilized. Trial outcomes, as defined in a clinical trial registry, offer a large set of elements to analyze. However, all clinical trial outcomes is an overwhelming amount of information. One way to reduce this amount of data to a usable volume is to only use a subset of trials. Our method uses a subset of trials by considering trials that support drug approval (pivotal trials) by Food and Drug Administration. We identified a set of pivotal trials from FDA drug approval documents and used primary outcomes data for these trials to identify a set of important CDEs. We identified 76 CDEs out of a set of 172 data elements from 192 pivotal trials for 100 drugs. This set of CDEs, grouped by medical condition, can be considered as containing the most significant data elements.Wrist accelerometers for assessing hallmark measures of physical activity (PA) are rapidly growing with the advent of smartwatch technology. Given the growing popularity of wrist-worn accelerometers, there needs to be a rigorous evaluation for recognizing (PA) type and estimating energy expenditure (EE) across the lifespan. Participants (66% women, aged 20-89 yrs) performed a battery of 33 daily activities in a standardized laboratory setting while a tri-axial accelerometer collected data from the right wrist. A portable metabolic unit was worn to measure metabolic intensity. We built deep learning networks to extract spatial and temporal representations from the time-series data, and used them to recognize PA type and estimate EE. The deep learning models resulted in high performance; the F1 score was 0.82, 0.81, and 95 for recognizing sedentary, locomotor, and lifestyle activities, respectively. The root mean square error was 1.1 (+/-0.13) for the estimation of EE.Applying state-of-the-art machine learning and natural language processing on approximately one million of teleconsultation records, we developed a triage system, now certified and in use at the largest European telemedicine provider. The system evaluates care alternatives through interactions with patients via a mobile application. Reasoning on an initial set of provided symptoms, the triage application generates AI-powered, personalized questions to better characterize the problem and recommends the most appropriate point of care and time frame for a consultation. The underlying technology was developed to meet the needs for performance, transparency, user acceptance and ease of use, central aspects to the adoption of AI-based decision support systems. Providing such remote guidance at the beginning of the chain of care has significant potential for improving cost efficiency, patient experience and outcomes. Being remote, always available and highly scalable, this service is fundamental in high demand situations, such as the current COVID-19 outbreak.

Our method uses a subset of trials by considering trials that support drug approval (pivotal trials) by Food and Drug Administration. We identified a set of pivotal trials from FDA drug approval documents and used primary outcomes data for these trials to identify a set of important CDEs. We identified 76 CDEs out of a set of 172 data elements from 192 pivotal trials for 100 drugs. Given the growing popularity of wrist-worn accelerometers, there needs to be a rigorous evaluation for recognizing (PA) type and estimating energy expenditure (EE) across the lifespan. Participants (66% women, aged 20-89 yrs) performed a battery of 33 daily activities in a standardized laboratory setting while a tri-axial accelerometer collected data from the right wrist. A portable metabolic unit was worn to measure metabolic intensity. We built deep learning networks to extract spatial and temporal representations from the time-series data, and used them to recognize PA type and estimate EE. The deep learning models resulted in high performance; the F1 score was 0.82, 0.81, and 95 for recognizing sedentary, locomotor, and lifestyle activities, respectively. Our results suggest that both species have experienced allopatric differentiation and admixture in historical periods, resulting in a ring-shape diversification, under the barrier effect of the Sichuan Basin. We infer that the tectonic events of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and climatic oscillations during the Quaternary played an important role on the genetic divergence of the two species by providing environmental heterogeneity and geographical variation. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the influence of reef type (natural or restored), taxa, and restored reef size, vertical relief, age, and tidal zone on the presence and magnitude of recruitment enhancement for nekton (i.e., fish and swimming crabs). Both intertidal and subtidal reefs, as well as restored and natural reefs, enhanced nekton recruitment, though there was variation among taxonomic groups with reef types. Recruitment enhancement was more common across taxa on restored (six families) than on natural (one family) reefs. Resident nekton families were more consistently enhanced than transient families. Nekton enhancement varied with a number of restored reef characteristics. Recruitment enhancement increased with greater reef size across taxa, decreased with higher vertical relief for two families, showed maximum recruitment around a single intertidal reef age for one family, and showed minimum recruitment around a single subtidal reef age for three families. Understanding variation across species in response to key design elements will improve restoration success and enhance return on investment. The purpose of this study was to investigate how locus of control, coping strategies, emotion regulation strategies and social support affect posttraumatic growth.
A cross-sectional study design was adopted. A convenience sample of 540 patients with lung cancer was recruited from November 2016 to July 2017 at two tertiary grade A hospitals in China. The participants completed a series of questionnaires. Structural equation modelling was used to explore the effects of psychosocial factors on posttraumatic growth.
Social support had a direct positive effect on posttraumatic growth (β=0.318, SE=0.071, ** 95% CI=0.252/0.390), and it also had indirect effects on posttraumatic growth (β=0.112, SE=0.023, ** 95%CI=0.088/0.135) through mediating psychological factors. Coping strategies and the cognitive reappraisal emotion regulation strategy were the main mediating variables, explaining approximately 73.1% of the indirect effect between social support and posttraumatic growth.
Our study suggests that Chinese lung cancer survivors can show relatively high posttraumatic growth.
