Multilevel lumbar spondylolistheses have been reported, but only secondary to degenerative processes. We describe a case where grade 4 anterolisthesis occurred (L3,4,5 over S1) because of multiple level traumatic pedicle avulsion rather than facetal/pars interarticularis/posterior ligamentous complex disruption in a 42-year-old man who presented with paraparesis after a fall from height. Decompression was performed at the L5 level, and pedicle screw fixation was performed at L3, L5, and S1 levels.
Although such an injury pattern seems catastrophic, it is deemed relatively stable because of the intact posterior ligamentous complex. Restoration of anatomy with stabilization allowed early mobility and satisfactory neurological recovery.

Existing techniques have focused on exploiting either the static nature of sketches with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or the temporal sequential property with recurrent neural networks (RNNs). In this work, we propose a new representation of sketches as multiple sparsely connected graphs. We design a novel graph neural network (GNN), the multigraph transformer (MGT), for learning representations of sketches from multiple graphs, which simultaneously capture global and local geometric stroke structures as well as temporal information. We report extensive numerical experiments on a sketch recognition task to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach. Particularly, MGT applied on 414k sketches from Google QuickDraw 1) achieves a small recognition gap to the CNN-based performance upper bound (72.80% versus 74.22%) and infers faster than the CNN competitors and 2) outperforms all RNN-based models by a significant margin. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work proposing to represent sketches as graphs and apply GNNs for sketch recognition. To design distributed control scheme for each vehicle, a local compensatory variable is generated based on information collected from its neighbors. The composite energy function is used in stability analysis. It is shown that uniform convergence of consensus errors is guaranteed. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.The goal of this study is to design an admittance controller for a robot to adaptively change its contribution to a collaborative manipulation task executed with a human partner to improve the task performance. This has been achieved by adaptive scaling of human force based on her/his movement intention while paying attention to the requirements of different task phases. In our approach, movement intentions of human are estimated from measured human force and velocity of manipulated object, and converted to a quantitative value using a fuzzy logic scheme. This value is then utilized as a variable gain in an admittance controller to adaptively adjust the contribution of robot to the task without changing the admittance time constant. We demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach by a pHRI experiment utilizing Fitts reaching movement task. Based on this data, we highlight the increased diagnosis of nodal disease, thus potentially optimizing patient selection prior to definitive treatment for prostate cancer.This festschrift contribution, written for my colleague and mentor John Graham, reflects on geneticist-genetic counselor interactions in clinical care, samples of alternative models of care for pediatric and general genetic counselors, and avenues for expanding access to genetic healthcare services utilizing genetic counselors.Student preparation has been shown to be of appreciable importance to student success in laboratory components of science courses. To promote student engagement prior to each laboratory session, technique and content videos, online assessments, and additional methods aiming to decrease cognitive load have been put into effect. Edpuzzle allows for instructors to effectively combine all of these components on a free, user-friendly, cloud-based platform. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/eliglustat.html To improve student experience and performance in the introductory Biochemistry laboratory, Edpuzzle videos were incorporated into the curriculum. Ten videos were created and assigned to students on the platform. The platform allowed students to view the videos at their own pace and provided immediate feedback from assessments embedded within the videos. Student perceptions of Edpuzzle were favorable and the platform helped to promote student engagement in the material prior to the laboratory session which resulted in improvements in the Biochemistry lab experience. The analysis of the stereochemistry of such biomolecules has significant practical impact to elucidate and assign the enzymatic specificity of the biosynthesis machinery. In this work, a new mass spectrometry compatible direct chiral ultra high performance liquid chromatography separation method for 3-hydroxy fatty acids without derivatization is presented. The application of amylose tris(3,5-dimethylphenyl carbamate) based polysaccharide chiral stationary phase immobilized on 1.6 μm silica particles (CHIRALPAK IA-U) allows the enantioseparation of 3-hydroxy fatty acids under generic electrospray ionization mass spectrometry friendly reversed phase gradient elution conditions. Adequate separation factors were achieved with both acetonitrile and methanol as organic modifiers, covering hydrocarbon chain lengths between C6 and C14 . Elution orders were derived from rhamnolipid (R-95) of which enantiomerically pure or enriched (R)-3-hydroxy fatty acids were recovered after ester hydrolysis. The S-configured acids consistently eluted before the respective R-enantiomers. The method was successfully applied for the elucidation of the absolute configuration of 3-hydroxy fatty acids originating from a novel lipopeptide with unknown structure. The work furthermore demonstrates that gradient elution is a viable option also in enantioselective (ultra)high performance liquid chromatography, even for analytes with modest separation factors, although less commonly exploited.We report the characterization of rotaxanes based on a carbazole-benzophenone thermally activated delayed fluorescence luminophore. We find that the mechanical bond leads to an improvement in key photophysical properties of the emitter, notably an increase in photoluminescence quantum yield and a decrease in the energy difference between singlet and triplet states, as well as fine tuning of the emission wavelength, a feat that is difficult to achieve when using covalently bound substituents. Computational simulations, supported by X-ray crystallography, suggest that this tuning of properties occurs due to weak interactions between the axle and the macrocycle that are enforced by the mechanical bond. The covalent PSM of the amino group generates metal binding sites, and subsequent post-synthetic metalation with PdII ions affords the PdII -incorporated Ni-MOF-74 catalyst. This catalyst exhibits highly efficient, size-selective, and recyclable catalytic activity for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. This investigation involved an in-depth examination of psychophysiological responses during exposure to the trauma memory across 10 sessions among active duty soldiers with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treated by Prolonged Exposure (PE) or Virtual Reality Exposure (VRE). We compared psychophysiological changes, session-by-session, between VRE and traditional imaginal exposure.
Heart rate (HR), galvanic skin response (GSR), and peripheral skin temperature were collected every 5 min during exposure sessions with 61 combat veterans of Iraq/Afghanistan and compared to the PTSD Checklist (PCL-C) and Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) outcomes using multilevel modeling.
Over the course of treatment, participants in the PE group had higher HR arousal compared to participants in the VRE group. With reference to GSR, in earlier sessions, participants demonstrated a within-session increase, whereas, in later sessions, participants showed a within-session habituation response. Introduction Bronchoscopy and related procedures have unambiguously been affected during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus-2 (SARS COV-2). Ordinary bronchoscopy practices and lung cancer services might have changed over this pandemic and for the years to come.Areas covered This manuscript summarizes the utility of bronchoscopy in COVID-19 patients, and the impact of the pandemic in lung cancer diagnostic services, in view of possible viral spread during these We conducted a literature review of articles published in PubMed/Medline from inception to November 5th, 2020 using relevant terms.Expert opinion Without doubt this pandemic has changed the way bronchoscopy and related procedures are being performed. Mandatory universal personal protective equipment, pre-bronchoscopy PCR tests, dedicated protective barriers and disposable bronchoscopes might be the safest and simpler way to perform even the most complicated procedures.Background Postoperative infections after rhinoplasties are rare, yet devastating on patient outcomes. The literature reports an overall incidence of less then 2% with higher numbers seen in those requiring revision procedures. Materials and Methods A retrospective chart review of rhinoplasty patients from 2002 to 2019 of the primary author (D.M.T.) was performed. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the use of postoperative antibiotic soaks and irrigations in rhinoplasty, as well as evaluate the postoperative infection rates. Results Of the 3084 rhinoplasty procedures evaluated, there were 19 postoperative infections (infection rate [IR] = 0.62%). Patients without antibiotic soaks or irrigations had 17 infections (IR = 1.01%). The IR of antibiotic soaks was 0.08% with a significant reduction compared with no soaks/irrigations (p = 0.0053). With antibiotic soaks and irrigations, there was 1 infection (IR = 0.49%) with no significant difference between no soaks/irrigations or soaks alone. Conclusions The use of antibiotic soaks and irrigations resulted in an IR of 0.62%. Antibiotic soaks reduced the rate of postoperative infection, particularly in secondary rhinoplasty. Antibiotic soaks and irrigations are safe, effective, and well-tolerated by patients. As a result, these techniques may be considered in patients undergoing rhinoplasty, particularly those with an extensive revision history, trauma, filler, prior infection, or underlying disease processes.Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) plus intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) applications on upper extremity circumference and volume in patients with lipedema. Methods and Results All participants included in the study were included in a treatment protocol consisting of CDP and IPC. The Perometer 400 NT was used in the measurement of upper extremity volume and circumference before and after treatment. The measurements were performed in four reference points. According to the Perometer results before and after CDP, statistically significant reduction was found in the circumference of 3 of the 4 points of measurements performed in each of the left and right upper extremities. When the volume assessments were compared, it was seen that statistically significant reduction was found in the volume of both limbs. Conclusion A treatment program consisting of CDP and IPC can be effective in reducing the circumference and volume of the arm in patients with upper extremity lipedema. So, CDP applications can help prevent the development of complications such as lipolymphedema, hypertension, and heart failure. The most common type of study design or article type was reviews and meta-analyses (23.2%) and clinical trials or intervention studies (19.4%). Explicit mention of naturopathy was reported in 8.1% of articles. Almost half (48.4%) of all included articles were published in 40 journals, and 56.9% of these were published in journals ranked in the first quartile of at least one subject area. Articles focused on mental health were more likely to be conducted in Australia (odds ratio [OR] 3.3) and focused on lifestyle behavior (OR 2.5) or clinical nutrition (OR 1.6). Articles about cancer or cancer-related conditions were more likely to include lifestyle behavior (OR 2.0) and less likely to be conducted in Australia (OR 0.1) or Germany (OR 0.5). Study 2 (N = 504) predicted and replicated this mediation effect. Further, sex differences in anxiety were serially mediated by grip strength and self-perceived formidability. These findings add to a nascent literature suggesting that differences in physical attributes may partially explain sex differences in personality.
Introduction Bronchoscopy and related procedures have unambiguously been affected during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus-2 (SARS COV-2). Ordinary bronchoscopy practices and lung cancer services might have changed over this pandemic and for the years to come.Areas covered This manuscript summarizes the utility of bronchoscopy in COVID-19 patients, and the impact of the pandemic in lung cancer diagnostic services, in view of possible viral spread during these We conducted a literature review of articles published in PubMed/Medline from inception to November 5th, 2020 using relevant terms.Expert opinion Without doubt this pandemic has changed the way bronchoscopy and related procedures are being performed. Mandatory universal personal protective equipment, pre-bronchoscopy PCR tests, dedicated protective barriers and disposable bronchoscopes might be the safest and simpler way to perform even the most complicated procedures.Background Postoperative infections after rhinoplasties are rare, yet devastating on patient outcomes. The literature reports an overall incidence of less then 2% with higher numbers seen in those requiring revision procedures. Materials and Methods A retrospective chart review of rhinoplasty patients from 2002 to 2019 of the primary author (D.M.T.) was performed. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the use of postoperative antibiotic soaks and irrigations in rhinoplasty, as well as evaluate the postoperative infection rates. Results Of the 3084 rhinoplasty procedures evaluated, there were 19 postoperative infections (infection rate [IR] = 0.62%). Patients without antibiotic soaks or irrigations had 17 infections (IR = 1.01%). The IR of antibiotic soaks was 0.08% with a significant reduction compared with no soaks/irrigations (p = 0.0053). With antibiotic soaks and irrigations, there was 1 infection (IR = 0.49%) with no significant difference between no soaks/irrigations or soaks alone. Conclusions The use of antibiotic soaks and irrigations resulted in an IR of 0.62%. Antibiotic soaks reduced the rate of postoperative infection, particularly in secondary rhinoplasty. Antibiotic soaks and irrigations are safe, effective, and well-tolerated by patients. As a result, these techniques may be considered in patients undergoing rhinoplasty, particularly those with an extensive revision history, trauma, filler, prior infection, or underlying disease processes.Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) plus intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) applications on upper extremity circumference and volume in patients with lipedema. Methods and Results All participants included in the study were included in a treatment protocol consisting of CDP and IPC. The Perometer 400 NT was used in the measurement of upper extremity volume and circumference before and after treatment. The measurements were performed in four reference points. According to the Perometer results before and after CDP, statistically significant reduction was found in the circumference of 3 of the 4 points of measurements performed in each of the left and right upper extremities. When the volume assessments were compared, it was seen that statistically significant reduction was found in the volume of both limbs. Conclusion A treatment program consisting of CDP and IPC can be effective in reducing the circumference and volume of the arm in patients with upper extremity lipedema. So, CDP applications can help prevent the development of complications such as lipolymphedema, hypertension, and heart failure. These biotherapeutics provide greater purification challenges where multiple polishing steps may be required to meet final purity specifications or the process steps may require extensive optimization. Recent studies have shown that activated carbon can be employed in downstream purification processes to selectively separate host cell proteins (HCPs) from monoclonal antibodies (mAb). However, the use of activated carbon as a unit operation in a cGMP purification process is relatively new. As such, the goal of this work is to provide guidance on development approaches, insight into operating parameters and solution conditions that can impact HCP removal, as well as further investigate the mechanism of removal by using mass spectrometry. In this work, activated carbon was evaluated to remove HCPs in the downstream purification process of a recombinant enzyme. Impact of process placement, flux (or residence time), and mass loading on HCP removal was investigated. Feasibility of high throughput screening (HTS) using loose activated carbon was assessed to reduce the amount of therapeutic protein needed and enable testing of a larger number of solution conditions. Finally, mass spectrometry was used to determine the population of HCPs removed by activated carbon. Our work demonstrates that activated carbon can be used effectively in downstream processes of biopharmaceuticals to remove HCPs (up to a 3 log10 reduction) and that an HTS format can be implemented to reduce material demands by up to 23x and allow for process optimization of this adsorbent for purification purposes.

The results were validated in an independent (validation) cohort from another high-volume TAVR centre (n=977).
The low-GNRI group had a higher proportion of female patients (59.1% vs. 52.1%), higher median agehe highest quartile (> 3595pg/mL), grade III-IV tricuspid regurgitation, pulmonary arterial hypertension, life-threatening bleeding, AKIN Stage 3 and disabling stroke.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute lower respiratory infection globally. There are vaccine candidates in development, but a systematic review on immunogenicity and safety of vaccine is lacking.
This systematic review of RSV vaccine clinical trials was undertaken using four databases. Searches were conducted using both controlled vocabulary terms such as "Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Human," "Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections," "Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccines," "Immunization," "Immunization Programs" and "Vaccines" and corresponding text word terms. The included studies were limited to clinical trials published from January 2000 to 31 December 2020. RSV infection case was defined as RSV-associated medically attended acute respiratory illness (MAARI) or RSV infection by serologically confirmed test (Western blot) during the RSV surveillance period. We calculated the relative risk of each vaccine trial with RSV infection case.
Of 6306 publications, 38 were included and data were extracted covering four major types of RSV vaccine candidates, these being live-attenuated/chimeric (n=14), recombinant-vector (n=6), subunit (n=12) and nanoparticle vaccines (n=6). For RSV infection cases, nine trials were involved and none of them showed a vaccine-related increased MAARI during RSV surveillance season.

Enzymatic formation of TAG from sugar or dietary lipid, its storage in lipid droplets, and its mobilization by lipolysis occur via mechanisms largely conserved between Drosophila and humans. Notably, dysfunctional Drosophila TAG homeostasis occurs in the context of aging, overnutrition, or defective gene function, and entails tissue-specific and organismal pathologies that resemble human disease. Enzymatic formation of TAG from sugar or dietary lipid, its storage in lipid droplets, and its mobilization by lipolysis occur via mechanisms largely conserved between Drosophila and humans. Notably, dysfunctional Drosophila TAG homeostasis occurs in the context of aging, overnutrition, or defective gene function, and entails tissue-specific and organismal pathologies that resemble human disease. A retrospective review was performed of all patients who underwent bariatric surgery between 2011 and 2017 at a university hospital in the United States. In severely obese patients with T2D, we measured the VAF via abdominal computed tomography scan and we calculated the FFM preoperatively and at a 12-month follow-up. Data collected included baseline demographic characteristics and perioperative parameters, such as treatment for hypertension (HTN) and T2D, body mass ind T2D. Our results suggest that at 12 months, there is a reduction in VAF and HbA1C without a significant loss of FFM. Further prospective studies are needed to better understand these findings.
Studies on early postoperative readmissions after bariatric surgery (BS) have examined readmissions as a single entity, regardless of urgency. Strategies to lower nonurgent readmissions would reduce unnecessary hospital utilization.

This suggests an important dichotomy within readmissions based on urgency, which has important implications for targeted quality initiatives.

Thirty-two elite ARF players' NF was assessed 72h following competitive matches (7±2) via the counter movement jump (CMJ) and isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP). Influence of season stage, external load parameters (GPS; 10Hz) and moderating influences of lower body strength (LBS), lower body power (LBP) and intermittent exercise capacity upon NF recovery were assessed using linear mixed effects models.
Moderate negative seasonal trends were evident for both rate of force development (RFD) 0-100ms (d=-0.86, 95%, CI ±0.57) and 0-200ms (d=-0.76, CI ±0.64). Significant but trivial effects of match load were observed between one standardised unit increase in high speed running (HSR) versus CMJ Force at zero velocity (d=0.12, CI ±0.12), and sum of high intensity accelerations and CMJ Eccentric deceleration RFD (d=-0.18, CI ±0.14). Accounting for baseline LBS better explained (weight of evidence W=87%) seasonal trends observed in IMTP peak force, with lower LBS showing greater capacity for improvement. Positive moderating influences were observed with baseline LBS and LBP (W=91 & 75%) on CMJ eccentric mean power responses to HSR, and CMJ jump height responses to very-HSR, respectively.

With the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic the 2020 Paralympic Games were postponed, impacting the athletes' competition schedule for the year. Due to the interrupted competition schedule and potentially decreased motivation, Paralympic athletes may be at risk for a highly disrupted training schedule, impacting their ability to prepare for the 2021 Games.
Our purpose was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the training, diet, and fitness of Paralympic cyclists and triathletes.
Twenty-four paracyclists and one paratriathlete (15 females and 10 males; age 37.6±9.3 years) completed two incremental exercise tests to assess sport-specific fitness and reported their training volume and intensity for a specified week prior to the pandemic (February) and again in March, April, and May (during pandemic). Participants also reported their dietary intake and sedentary screen time prior to and during the pandemic.
The amount of time spent engaging in sedentary screen time increased from 4.5 to 6.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of a novel chelating agents, L-glutamic acid N,N-diacetic acid (GLDA), a biodegradable alternative to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid on the nutritional bioavailability of zinc in broilers. Twelve dietary treatments were allocated to 96 pens in a randomized block design. Pens contained 10 Ross 308 male broilers in a factorial design with 6 incremental zinc levels (40, 45, 50, 60, 80, and 120 ppm of total Zn), with and without inclusion of GLDA (0 and 100 ppm) as respective factors. The geometrical parameters showed high variation among 3 species of poultry, and even between breeds in the same species. The five geometrical parameters were grouped into 2 sets, one contained shape index and sphericity, the other comprised geometric mean diameter, surface area, and volume. The parameters in the same set can be perfectly fitted to one another. Egg weight, shell membrane weight, and calcified shell weight were significantly correlated with geometric mean diameter, surface area, and volume. In accordance with false discovery rate-adjusted P value, both shell membrane relative weight and calcified shell thickness showed no significant correlations with any of the geometrical parameters. However, the correlations between geometrical parameters and other shell variables (calcified shell weight, shell relative weight, calcified shell thickness uniformity, and eggshell breaking strength) depend on breed. Both constitutive proportions and percentage contents of 3 eggshell matrix components (acid-insoluble, water-insoluble, and both acid and water facultative-soluble matrix) had no effects on egg shape and size. The correlations between the amounts of various shell matrix, egg shape and size depend on breed or species. This study provides a methodology and the correlation between geometrical parameters and eggshell qualities, and between geometrical parameters and organic matrix components in calcified shells.The effects of early heat conditioning on the acute heat stress response in broilers were investigated via the growth performance, dopamine, serotonin, and corticosterone and the expression of heat shock proteins (HSP) and heat shock factors. One-day-old chicks (n = 144) were divided into 3 groups in a 35-d experiment (48 chicks per each group). Group 1 (C) was treated with an optimum temperature, group 2 (CH) was treated with 40°C ± 1°C on day 35 (5 h), and group 3 (HH) was treated with 40°C ± 1°C on day 5 (24 h) and day 35 (5 h). On day 7, the body weight gain was lower (P less then 0.05) in HH than in C and CH. On day 35, the heat-treated groups (CH and HH) had lower weight gains than the C group (P less then 0.05), whereas the feed conversion ratio was lower in HH (P less then 0.05). Serum corticosterone was higher in CH than in C, but HH and C did not differ (P less then 0.05). Although breeding for slow-growing broilers is relatively advanced in Europe and the United States, it is limited in Australia. Crossbreeding is one of the approaches taken to developing slow-growing broiler strains. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare performance, immune response, leg health, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of a novel crossbred slow-growing broiler breed (SGB) with the conventional, fast-growing Cobb 500 broiler (CB) to assess their suitability as an alternative for chicken meat production in Australia. A total of 236 one-day-old broiler chicks (116 SGB and 120 fast-growing CB) were reared on standard commercial diet in an intensive production system. Birds and feed were weighed on a weekly basis and feed intake and feed conversion ratio calculated. At 21 d of age, a 2% suspension of sheep red blood cells was injected subcutaneously into 8 broilers of each breed to compare their antibody response. Birds from both breeds were grown to a final live weight of 2.0-2.2 kg, before a latency-to-lie (LTL) test, carcass analysis and apparent metabolizable energy (AME) assay were performed. The SGB reached the target weight at 55 d of age compared with 32 d in CB. However, SGB stood for longer during LTL, had higher thigh, drumstick, and wing yields (as a percentage of carcass weight) as well as darker and redder meat in comparison with the CB. The CB had better feed conversion efficiency, higher antibody (IgM) production, higher AME, heavier breast yield, and lower meat drip loss than the SGB. Although fast-growing CB outperformed the SGB for traditional performance parameters, the crossbred in this study was comparable with other slow-growing broiler breeds and strains across different countries and is thus a suitable candidate for a slow-growing alternative in Australia.

The parameters in the same set can be perfectly fitted to one another. Egg weight, shell membrane weight, and calcified shell weight were significantly correlated with geometric mean diameter, surface area, and volume. In accordance with false discovery rate-adjusted P value, both shell membrane relative weight and calcified shell thickness showed no significant correlations with any of the geometrical parameters. However, the correlations between geometrical parameters and other shell variables (calcified shell weight, shell relative weight, calcified shell thickness uniformity, and eggshell breaking strength) depend on breed. Both constitutive proportions and percentage contents of 3 eggshell matrix components (acid-insoluble, water-insoluble, and both acid and water facultative-soluble matrix) had no effects on egg shape and size. The correlations between the amounts of various shell matrix, egg shape and size depend on breed or species. This study provides a methodology and the correlation between geometrical parameters and eggshell qualities, and between geometrical parameters and organic matrix components in calcified shells.The effects of early heat conditioning on the acute heat stress response in broilers were investigated via the growth performance, dopamine, serotonin, and corticosterone and the expression of heat shock proteins (HSP) and heat shock factors. One-day-old chicks (n = 144) were divided into 3 groups in a 35-d experiment (48 chicks per each group). Group 1 (C) was treated with an optimum temperature, group 2 (CH) was treated with 40°C ± 1°C on day 35 (5 h), and group 3 (HH) was treated with 40°C ± 1°C on day 5 (24 h) and day 35 (5 h). On day 7, the body weight gain was lower (P less then 0.05) in HH than in C and CH. On day 35, the heat-treated groups (CH and HH) had lower weight gains than the C group (P less then 0.05), whereas the feed conversion ratio was lower in HH (P less then 0.05). Serum corticosterone was higher in CH than in C, but HH and C did not differ (P less then 0.05). Liver HSP70 protein expression was higher in CH than HH and C (P less then 0.05), which did not differ, and HSP40 protein expression was higher in CH than C (P less then 0.05). Although breeding for slow-growing broilers is relatively advanced in Europe and the United States, it is limited in Australia. Crossbreeding is one of the approaches taken to developing slow-growing broiler strains. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare performance, immune response, leg health, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of a novel crossbred slow-growing broiler breed (SGB) with the conventional, fast-growing Cobb 500 broiler (CB) to assess their suitability as an alternative for chicken meat production in Australia. A total of 236 one-day-old broiler chicks (116 SGB and 120 fast-growing CB) were reared on standard commercial diet in an intensive production system. Birds and feed were weighed on a weekly basis and feed intake and feed conversion ratio calculated. At 21 d of age, a 2% suspension of sheep red blood cells was injected subcutaneously into 8 broilers of each breed to compare their antibody response. Birds from both breeds were grown to a final live weight of 2.0-2.2 kg, before a latency-to-lie (LTL) test, carcass analysis and apparent metabolizable energy (AME) assay were performed. The SGB reached the target weight at 55 d of age compared with 32 d in CB. However, SGB stood for longer during LTL, had higher thigh, drumstick, and wing yields (as a percentage of carcass weight) as well as darker and redder meat in comparison with the CB. The CB had better feed conversion efficiency, higher antibody (IgM) production, higher AME, heavier breast yield, and lower meat drip loss than the SGB. Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease that predisposes patients to bone fracture due to decreased bone density and quality, disrupted bone microarchitecture, and increased bone fragility. As the global elderly population increases, the incidence of osteoporosis will greatly increase, and the associated adverse consequences will become more serious. S1P plays an important role in homeostasis, and disruption of the balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts may induce osteoporosis. A high frequency of osteoporotic fracture is associated with increased plasma S1P levels. Studies have shown that S1P is an important therapeutic target in osteoporosis because it controls the migration of osteoclast precursors, vigorously maintains the bone mineralization process, and is a critical regulator of osteoclastogenesis. Improved understanding of the functional roles and molecular mechanisms of S1P in bone turnover could facilitate the discovery of novel targets for the treatment of osteoporosis. This review provides a critical discussion of the role of S1P in osteoporosis and treatments.This paper aims to analyze how intestinal flora regulates liver fibrosis pathogenesis and to evaluate the regulatory effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on the intestinal flora, providing new insights into liver fibrosis treatment. Destruction of the intestinal microbiome can lead to liver fibrosis development, accelerating the intestinal microbiome's disruption. TCM can effectively regulate the intestinal flora, helping prevent and treat liver fibrosis. This review discusses the mechanisms behind intestinal flora changes in liver fibrosis and how TCM can regulate these changes. We searched PubMed, the Wanfang database, and CNKI for "liver fibrosis", "intestinal microflora", and "intestinal microbiota" and reviewed the retrieved literature. We detail the prevention and treatment options for liver fibrosis though the use of TCM in regulating intestinal flora. We also highlight the influence of the intestinal flora on liver fibrosis and present the research regarding the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis using TCM. We also describe the effects of TCM on the intestinal flora. TCM can effectively regulate the intestinal flora to prevent and treat liver fibrosis through the liver-intestine axis.The literature about the factors associated with cancer treatment refusal, especially by the older patients is scarce. The search took place in July 2020 and it included articles published in the last 5 years. This study aimed to investigate the predictive significance of preoperative red cell volume distribution width (RDW) level for prognosis and to establish nomograms incorporating preoperative blood markers to predict postoperative complications and survival in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM).
This retrospective study included 380 enrolled CRLM patients who underwent hepatic resection. Predictors of postoperative complications were explored using binary logistic regression analysis. Covariates associated with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated through univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Only variables that reached statistical significance at P<0.1 in the univariate analysis were allowed to enter the multivariate analyses. The independent predictors that retained in the final multivariate model were incorporated into nomograms.
The optimal cut-off point of preoperative RDW-CV was 16%, and elevated RDW-CV was significantly associatedimination (C-index 0.700±0.021) and calibration. Significant differences in PFS and OS were shown among patients stratified into three different risk groups (P<0.001) based on the nomograms.
This study first revealed the relationship between preoperative RDW-SD, RDW-CV, and prognosis in patients with CRLM. It also established nomograms especially considering preoperative blood markers to predict postoperative complications, PFS, and OS, which facilitated physicians to determine the optimal clinical management strategies.
