  • It has been preclinically and clinically proven that anticancer agent-incorporating (ACA-incorporating) polymeric micelles selectively accumulate in tumor via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, yielding a wider therapeutic window and greater safety than conventional low-molecular weight ACAs. To increase the antitumor effect of these safer micelle formulations, epirubicin-incorporating polymer micelles (NC-6300) conjugated with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have been prepared. In this study, we used two types of mAb an anti-tissue factor (TF) mAb that does not exert a direct cytocidal effect, and an anti-HER2 mAb that has a direct cytocidal effect. We compared the antitumor effects and pharmacological properties of the two types of antibody conjugated to NC-6300. Immunomicelles conjugated to anti-TF mAb exerted greater antitumor activity toward TF-positive stomach cancer than the combination of anti-TF mAb and NC-6300, and were distributed more uniformly throughout TF-positive tumor tissue than NC-6300. On the other hand, immunomicelles conjugated to anti-HER2 mAb did not exert significant antitumor activity toward HER2-positive stomach cancer relative to the combined use of anti-HER2 mAb and NC-6300. Thus, this immunomicelle-based strategy may be useful for antibodies that target cancer as pilot molecules even when the antibodies themselves do not have an antitumor effect. V.In this paper, we develop a mathematical model for the early stage of atherosclerosis, as a chronic inflammatory disease. It includes also processes that are relevant for the "thickening" of the vessel walls, and prepares a more complete model including also the later stages of atherosclerosis. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/crenolanib-cp-868596.html The model consists of partial differential equations Navier-Stokes equations modeling blood flow, Biot equations modeling the fluid flow inside the poroelastic vessel wall, and convection/chemotaxis-reaction-diffusion equations modeling transport, signaling and interaction processes initiating inflammation and atherosclerosis. The main innovations of this model are a) quantifying the endothelial permeability to low-density-lipoproteins (LDL) and to the monocytes as a function of WSS, cytokines and LDL on the endothelial surface; b) transport of monocytes on the endothelial surface, mimicking the monocytes adhesion and rolling; c) the monocytes influx in the lumen, as a function of factor increasing monocytopoiesis; d) coupling between Navier-Stokes system, Biot system and convection/chemotaxis-reaction-diffusion equations. Numerical simulations of a simplified model were performed in an idealized two-dimensional geometry in order to investigate the dynamics of endothelial permeability, and the growth and spread of immune cells populations and their dependence in particular on low-density-lipoprotein and wall-shear stress. Reverse transcriptase (RT) enzymes are indispensable tools for interrogating diverse aspects of RNA metabolism and transcriptome composition. Due to the growing interest in sequence and structural complexity of long RNA molecules, processive RT enzymes are now required for preserving linkage and information content in mixed populations of transcripts, and the low-processivity RT enzymes that are commercially available cannot meet this need. MarathonRT is encoded within a eubacterial group II intron and it has been shown to efficiently copy highly structured long RNA molecules in a single pass. In this work, we systematically characterize MarathonRT as a tool enzyme and optimize its performance in a variety of applications that include single cycle reverse-transcription of long RNAs, in-cell SHAPE-MaP using ultra-long amplicons and the detection of natural RNA base modifications. By diversifying MarathonRT reaction protocols, we provide an upgraded suite of tools for cutting-edge RNA research and clinical application. BACKGROUND We recently reported that 16 weeks of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with recombinant (r) Mal d 1, but not rBet v 1, significantly improved birch pollen-related apple allergy. Allergen-specific IgE-blocking IgG antibodies have been associated with clinical efficacy. OBJECTIVE We compared the quantity, quality, and IgE-blocking bioactivity of SLIT-induced Mal d 1-specific IgG antibodies in both treatment groups. METHODS Pre- and post-SLIT sera were assessed for rMal d 1-specific IgG antibodies in ELISA and for their ability to inhibit apple allergen-induced upregulation of CD63 on basophils from non-treated individuals with birch pollen-related apple allergy. Post-SLIT sera depleted of IgG1 or IgG4 were compared for their IgE-blocking activity. IgG1-binding to rMal d 1 was competed with rMal d 1 and rBet v 1 in ELISA. RESULTS SLIT with rMal d 1 and rBet v 1 induced comparable levels of rMal d 1-specific IgG1-4 antibodies. Only post-rMal d 1-SLIT sera displayed IgE-blocking activity which was significantly reduced by depletion of IgG1 and less so by IgG4-depletion. In competition ELISA, IgG1-binding to Mal d 1 in post-rMal d 1-SLIT sera was fully inhibited with rMal d 1 but not with rBet v 1. Correspondingly, Bet v 1 was the more potent competitor for IgG1-binding to Mal d 1 in post-rBet v 1-SLIT sera. CONCLUSION Sixteen-week rMal d 1-SLIT induced functional, primarily Mal d 1-specific IgE-blocking antibodies whereas rBet v 1-SLIT induced Bet v 1-specific, Mal d 1-cross-reactive IgG antibodies with limited cross-blocking activity. These results provide a possible explanation for the limited effectiveness of birch pollen immunotherapy on birch pollen-related food allergy and indicate a dominant protective role of functional IgE-blocking IgG1 antibodies in the early phase of allergy treatment. Starch gelatinization is an endothermic transition arising during rice cooking, which significantly influences rice eating and cooking quality (ECQ). The nature of starch (especially amylose) fine molecular structures that gives rise to this endotherm is however currently unclear. A modified Gomperz model was developed in this study to fit the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms, resulting complementary information to the traditional DSC parameters. Correlation analysis between DSC parameters with starch chain-length distributions (CLDs) from 14 different rice starches showed for the first time that although amylose CLDs didn't affect starch gelatinization temperatures, the relative length of amylose medium chains was negatively correlated with the gelatinization temperature range. Furthermore, gelatinization onset and peak temperature as well as maximum gelatinization rate were negatively correlated with the relative length of amylopectin short chains, while the conclusion temperature were related to the relative length of amylopectin medium chains.

  • Emerging evidence suggests that bitter and sweet Taste receptors (TRs) in the airway are important sentinels of innate immunity. TRs are G protein-coupled receptors that trigger downstream signaling cascades in response to activation of specific ligands. Among them, the T1R family consists of three genes T1R1, T1R2, and T1R3, which function as heterodimers for sweet tastants and umami tastants. While the other TRs family components T2Rs function as bitter tastants. To understand the relationship between TRs and mucosal immunity in teleost, here, we firstly identified and analyzed the molecular characteristics of three TRs (T1R1, T1R3, and T2R4) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Secondly, by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), we detected the mRNA expression levels of T1R1, T1R3 and T2R4 and found that the three genes could be tested in all detected tissues (pharynx, buccal cavity, tongue, nose, gill, eye, gut, fin, skin) and the expression levels of T1R3 and T2R4 were higher in buccal mucosa (BM) and pharyngeal mucosa (PM) compare to other tissues. It may suggest that T1R3 and T2R4 play important roles in BM and PM. Then, to analyses the changes of expression levels of the three genes in rainbow trout infected with pathogens, we established three infection models Flavobacterium columnare (F. cloumnare), infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich). Subsequently, by qPCR, we detected the expression profiles of TRs in the gustatory tissues (BM, PM and skin) of rainbow trout after infection with F. cloumnare, IHNV, and Ich, respectively. We found that under three different infection models, the expression of the T1R1, T1R3 and T2R4 showed their own changes in mRNA levels. And the expression levels of the T1R1, T1R3 and T2R4 changed significantly at different time points in response to three infection models, respectively, suggesting that TRs may be associated with mucosal immunity. With the increasing incidence of cerebrovascular diseases and dementia, considerable efforts have been made to develop effective treatments on vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), among which accumulating practice-based evidence has shown great potential of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Current randomized double-blind controlled trial has been designed to evaluate the 6-month treatment effects of Dengzhan Shengmai (DZSM) capsules, one TCM herbal preparations on VCI, and to explore the underlying neural mechanisms with graph theory-based analysis and machine learning method based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data. A total of 82 VCI patients were recruited and randomly assigned to drug (45 with DZSM) and placebo (37 with placebo) groups, and neuropsychological and neuroimaging data were acquired at baseline and after 6-month treatment. After treatment, compared to the placebo group, the drug groups showed significantly improved performance in Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) score (p less then 0.001) and the other cognitive domains. And with the reconstruction of white matter structural network, there were more streamlines connecting the left thalamus and right hippocampus in the drug groups (p less then 0.001 uncorrected), with decreasing nodal efficiency of the right olfactory associated with slower decline in the general cognition (r = -0.364, p = 0.048). Moreover, support vector machine classification analyses revealed significant white matter network alterations after treatment in the drug groups (accuracy of baseline vs. 6-month later, 68.18 %). Taking together, the present study showed significant efficacy of DZSM treatment on VCI, which might result from white matter microstructure alterations and the topological changes in brain structural network. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are single-stranded RNAs which form a covalent bond structure without a 5' cap or a 3' polyadenylated tail, which is deleted through ****-splicing. The expression of circRNAs in highly divergent eukaryotes is abundant. With the development of high-throughput sequencing, the mysteries of circRNAs have gradually been revealed. Increased attention has been paid to determining their biological functions and whether their changed expression profiles are linked to disease progression. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Y-27632.html Functionally, circRNAs have been shown to act as miRNA sponges or nuclear transcription factor regulators, and to play a part in RNA splicing. Various types of circRNAs have been discovered to be differentially expressed under steady physiological and pathological conditions. Recently, several studies have focused on the roles of circRNAs in macrophages on inflammatory stimulation. In this study, we review the current advances in the understanding of circRNAs in macrophages under various pathological conditions, in particular during organ fibrosis, and summarize possible directions for future circRNA applications. Glycogen storage disease type IX (GSD IX) is caused by a deficiency of hepatic phosphorylase kinase. The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical features, long term outcomes, and genetic analysis of GSD IX in Korea. A GSD gene panel was created and hybridization capture-based next-generation sequencing was performed. We investigated clinical laboratory data, results of molecular genetic analysis, liver biopsy findings, and long-term outcomes. Ten children were diagnosed with GSD IX at Seoul National University Children's Hospital. Hypoglycemia, hyperlactacidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperuricemia, liver fibrosis on liver biopsy, and short stature was found in 30%, 56%, 100%, 60%, 80% and 50% of the children, respectively. Seven PHKA2 variants were identified in eight children with GSD IXa-one nonsense (c.2268dupT; p.(Asp757Ter)), two splicing (c.918+1G > A, c.718-2A > G), one frameshift (c.405_419delinsTCCTGGCC; p.(Asp136ProfsTer11)), and three missense variants (c.3628G > A; p.(Gly1210Arg), c.1245G > T and c.2746C > T; p.(Arg916Trp)). Two variants of PHKG2 were identified in two children with GSD IXc-one frameshift (c.783delC; p.(Ser262AlafsTer6)) and one missense (c.661G > A; p.(Val221Met)). Elevated liver enzymes and hypertriglyceridemia in children with GSD IXa tended to improve with age. For the first time, we report hepatocellular carcinoma in a patient with GSD IXc. The GSD gene panel is a useful diagnostic tool to confirm GSD IX. The clinical phenotype of GSD IXc is severe and monitoring for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma should be implemented.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are single-stranded RNAs which form a covalent bond structure without a 5' cap or a 3' polyadenylated tail, which is deleted through back-splicing.

  • 5). Our data showed that a subset of differentially phosphorylated proteins belonged to splicing machinery. Pathway analysis highlighted Cdc2-like kinase (CLK1) as upstream kinase. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/azd9291.html Inhibition of CLK1 using TG003 and CLK1 siRNA resulted in a decreased cell viability, proliferation, invasion and migration as well as modulation in the phosphorylation of SRSF2. Ex vivo experiments which utilizes patient's own tumor and blood to recreate the tumor microenvironment validated the use of CLK1 as a potential target for gastric cancer treatment. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicates that CLK1 plays a crucial role in the regulation of splicing process in gastric cancer and that CLK1 can act as a novel therapeutic target in gastric cancer. In the process of electrolytic aluminium production, a large amount of fluoride is deposited into the surrounding environment. The growth of crops within these areas creates a state of high stress in plants that can easily result in excessive fluorine enrichment in agricultural products, which in turn poses a health threat to humans via the food chain. However, it is not clear what the degree of influence is or how long the impacts of fluorides in soil and agricultural products last for. In this study, 122 vegetable species and 36 surface soil samples were collected within 10 km of an aluminium plant that had been abandoned for five years. The single factor index and the geological accumulation index methods were used to evaluate the degree of fluorine pollution in vegetables and soil within the study area. The hazard index and the hazard quotient were used to assess vegetable and soil health risks, respectively. The results showed that the fluorine content of 89.26% of agricultural products exceeded the Chinbles and ground dust around the aluminium plant still had high non-carcinogenic risks for children, even though it has been abandoned for more than five years.Moderate heat stress and fluctuating light are typical conditions in summer in tropical and subtropical regions. This type of stress can cause photodamage to photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII). However, photosynthetic responses to the combination of heat and fluctuating light in young leaves are little known. In this study, we investigated chlorophyll fluorescence and P700 redox state under fluctuating light at 25 °C and 42 °C in young leaves of tobacco. Our results indicated that fluctuating light caused selective photodamage to PSI in the young leaves at 25 °C and 42 °C. Furthermore, the moderate heat stress significantly accelerated photoinhibition of PSI under fluctuating light. Within the first 10 s after transition from low to high light, cyclic electron flow (CEF) around PSI was highly stimulated at 25 °C but was slightly activated at 42 °C. Such depression of CEF activation at moderate heat stress were unable to maintain energy balance under high light. As a result, electron flow from PSI to NADP+ was restricted, leading to the over-reduction of PSI electron carriers. These results indicated that moderate heat stress altered the CEF performance under fluctuating light and thus accelerated PSI photoinhibition in tobacco young leaves.Young people experiencing mental ill-health are often excluded from peer networks, family events, education, marriage and employment. We evaluated a community-based, peer-led intervention guided by the Nae Disha (new pathways) program, targeting young people affected by mental ill-health in Uttarakhand, India. A total of 11 groups involving 142 young people (30 male, 112 female) and 8 peer facilitators participated, most of whom were enrolled in a community mental health program. The impact of the intervention on participation, mental health, and social strengths and difficulties was measured at baseline and endline using validated instruments. The proportion experiencing significant social isolation reduced from 20.6 to 5.9% (p  less then  0.001), and those classified in the 'abnormal' range of the social difficulties measure halved from 42.6 to 21.3% (p  less then  0.001). These findings clearly demonstrate that perceptions of social inclusion and mental health of young people affected by mental illness can be significantly strengthened through participation in this low-resource intervention.Ching-I Peng, the most prolific and internationally recognized Taiwanese plant taxonomist of his generation, passed away on May 1, 2018. Dr. Peng was an eminent worker on the taxonomy of East Asian plants and the genus Ludwigia, and the foremost expert on Asian Begonia. He served as associate editor, co-editor in chief, and editor-in-chief of Botanical Studies and its predecessor Botanical Bulletin of Academia Sinica during the period 1992-2016. He gathered over 25,000 plant specimens, name 121 plant taxa, and has left a remarkable legacy of literature, collaborations and collections. This article summarizes Dr. Peng's academic career and commemorates his enduring contribution. The COVID-19 pandemic threatens to disrupt the provision of mental health services. In response, policymakers, administrators, and providers have taken bold steps toward enabling telepsychiatry to bridge this sudden gap in care for our most vulnerable populations. With rapid deregulation and adoption of this modality of care, careful consideration of issues related to policy and implementation is essential to maximize its effectiveness and mitigate unintended consequences. Though the crisis places the healthcare system under strain, it sets the stage for a lasting shift in not only how care is delivered, but also our beliefs around the system's capacity for rapid, innovative change.Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) and MRI are currently two mainstream imaging techniques used to diagnose deep endometriosis (DE) with comparable accuracy, but there is still ample room for improvement. As endometriotic lesions progress to fibrosis concomitant with the increase in tissue stiffness, transvaginal elastosonography (TVESG) is well-suited for diagnosing DE. To test the hypothesis that lesional stiffness as measured by TVESG correlates with the extent of lesional fibrosis, the markers of progression, hormonal receptor expression, and vascularity, we recruited 30 patients suspected to have DE who went through pelvic examination, TVUS and/or MRI, and TVESG and were ultimately diagnosed by histology. Their lesional tissue samples were subjected to immunohistochemistry analysis of markers for epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transdifferentiation (FMT), estrogen and progesterone receptors (ERβ and PR), microvessel density (MVD), and vascularity, as well as quantification of lesional fibrosis.

  • The clinical understanding is that it requires more cranial growth to "round out" a full posterior skull flattening than an asymmetry. Based on the study results, infants with asymmetrical brachycephaly should be treated as early as possible to increase chances of achieving full correction of the deformity.Despite numerous attempts to fabricate the core-shell nanoparticles, novel, simple, and low-cost approaches are still required to produce these efficient nanosystems. In this study, we propose the synthesis of bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles of gold (AuNP) and silver (AgNP) nanostructures via a bioinspired polydopamine (PDOP) layer and their employment as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platform. Herein, the PDOP layer was used as an interface between nanostructures as well as stabilizing and reducing agents for the deposition of silver ions onto the AuNPs. UV-vis absorption spectra and electron microscope images confirmed the deposition of the silver ions and the formation of core-shell nanoparticles. SERS activity tests indicated that both the PDOP thickness and silver deposition time are the dominant parameters that determine the SERS performances of the proposed core-shell system. In comparison to bare AuNPs, more than three times higher SERS signal intensity was obtained with an enhancement factor of 3.5 × 105.Recently, carbon allotropes have received tremendous research interest and paved a new avenue for optical fiber sensing technology. Carbon allotropes exhibit unique sensing properties such as large surface to volume ratios, biocompatibility, and they can serve as molecule enrichers. Meanwhile, optical fibers possess a high degree of surface modification versatility that enables the incorporation of carbon allotropes as the functional coating for a wide range of detection tasks. Moreover, the combination of carbon allotropes and optical fibers also yields high sensitivity and specificity to monitor target molecules in the vicinity of the nanocoating surface. In this review, the development of carbon allotropes-based optical fiber sensors is studied. The first section provides an overview of four different types of carbon allotropes, including carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, graphene, and nanodiamonds. The second section discusses the synthesis approaches used to prepare these carbon allotropes, followed by some deposition techniques to functionalize the surface of the optical fiber, and the associated sensing mechanisms. Numerous applications that have benefitted from carbon allotrope-based optical fiber sensors such as temperature, strain, volatile organic compounds and biosensing applications are reviewed and summarized. Finally, a concluding section highlighting the technological deficiencies, challenges, and suggestions to overcome them is presented. We investigate Fano resonances and sensing enhancements in a simple Au/TiO2 hybrid metasurface through the finite-different time-domain (FDTD) simulation and coupled mode theory (CMT) analysis. The results show that the Fano resonance in the proposed simple metasurface is caused by the destructive interaction between the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and the local surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), the quality factor and dephasing time for the Fano resonance can be effectively tuned by the thickness of Au and TiO2 structures, the length of each unit in x and y directions, as well as the structural defect. In particular, single Fano resonance splits into multiple Fano resonances caused by a stub-shaped defect, and multiple Fano resonances can be tuned by the size and position of the stub-shaped defect. https://www.selleckchem.com/mTOR.html Moreover, we also find that the sensitivity in the Au/TiO2 hybrid metasurface with the stub-shaped defect can reach up to 330 nm/RIU and 535 nm/RIU at the Fano resonance 1 and Fano resonance 2, which is more than three times as sensitive in the Au/TiO2 hybrid metasurface without the stub-shaped defect, and also higher than that in the TiO2 metasurface reported before. These results may provide further understanding of Fano resonances and guidance for designing ultra-high sensitive refractive index sensors. This paper proposes a novel parcel delivery system which consists of a drone and public transportation vehicles such as trains, trams, etc. This system involves two delivery schemes drone-direct scheme referring to delivering to a customer by a drone directly and drone-vehicle collaborating scheme referring to delivering a customer based on the collaboration of a drone and public transportation vehicles. The fundamental characteristics including the delivery time, energy consumption and battery recharging are modelled, based on which a time-dependent scheduling problem for a single drone is formulated. It is shown to be NP-complete and a dynamic programming-based exact algorithm is presented. Since its computational complexity is exponential with respect to the number of customers, a sub-optimal algorithm is further developed. This algorithm accounts the time for delivery and recharging, and it first schedules the customer which leads to the earliest return. Its computational complexity is also discussed. Moreover, extensive computer simulations are conducted to demonstrate the scheduling performance of the proposed algorithms and the impacts of several key system parameters are investigated.Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are predominantly very rare recessive autosomal neurodegenerative diseases.Sphingolipidoses, a sub-group of LSDs, result from defects in lysosomal enzymes involved in sphingolipid catabolism, and feature disrupted storage systems which trigger complex pathogenic cascades with other organelles collaterally affected. This process leads to cell dysfunction and death, particularly in the central nervous system. One valuable approach to gaining insights into the global impact of lysosomal dysfunction is through metabolomics, which represents a discovery tool for investigating disease-induced modifications in the patterns of large numbers of simultaneously-analysed metabolites, which also features the identification of biomarkers Here, the scope and applications of metabolomics strategies to the investigation of sphingolipidoses is explored in order to facilitate our understanding of the biomolecular basis of these conditions. This review therefore surveys the benefits of applying 'state-of-the-art' metabolomics strategies, both univariate and multivariate, to sphingolipidoses, particularly Niemann-Pick type C disease.

  • The genus Baseprocessa Fan & Li, 2017 is reviewed and a new species B. longiprocessa sp. nov. from Tibet is described and illustrated. An updated checklist and distributions of the species of this genus are provided and a key to Chinese Coelidiinae genera is included.A new species of the genus Sibon is described based on four specimens from Parque Nacional Natural Munchique, department of Cauca, Colombia. The new species differs from all members of the S. annulatus and S. nebulatus groups because it has an ocellate pattern, which places it into the S. argus species group. It differs from S. argus by having non-protuberant eyes, fewer ventrals, subcaudals, and total segmental counts; and it differs from S. longifrenis by having fewer segmental counts in males and females, only six supralabials and postmentals absent. Additionally, it differs from both species due to its smaller body size.A new genus of the subfamily Coelotinae F.O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1893, Vappolotes Zhao et S. Li gen. n., with two new species, V. ganlongensis Zhao et S. Li sp. n. (♂♀) and V. jianpingensis Zhao et S. Li sp. n. (♀), is described. The genus is restricted to southern China (Guizhou). Its relationship to other coelotine genera is discussed. A partial fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I of both species were obtained to aid species identification at the molecular level.A new genus and species of flagelliform gorgonian coral is described from mesophotic depth in the western Pacific Ocean. The new taxon exhibits calcaxonian morphological characters and shares affinities to both the clade that includes the Chrysogorgiidae, Primnoidae, and Isididae, as well as the clade that includes the Ellisellidae and the Pennatulacea. Based on morphology alone, placement in a new family is likely justifiable, since it exhibits some characters similar to several diverse calcaxonian taxa, and has unique features as well, but such an outcome awaits supporting molecular evidence. The new genus and species is remarkable among most octocorals in that it has an axis that is quadrangular in transverse section as in the calcaxonian Flagelligorgia gracilis and the pennatulacean Funiculina quadrangularis, and an apparently uniform, solid, highly calcified axial structure that lacks concentric layers or prismatic radiating wedges. In addition, it has distinctive sclerites of the surface coenenchyme that are predominantly elongate warty spindles with median waists, some of which superficially resemble sclerites found in some species of ellisellid gorgonians, but also exhibit ultrastructural features that differentiate them.A new species of gall fly, Fergusonina nodulosa sp. nov. (Diptera Fergusoninidae) is described from Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/azd9291.html (Myrtaceae) in southern Australia. The adult fly is yellow with dark brown to black markings, the male postgonites have one large distal tooth and an ovoid subapical lobe with two lateral setae, the female postabdomen is short and sparsely setose, and the wing has a posterior cross vein. The larva possesses a dorsal shield comprising rows of raised spicules on thoracic segments 1-3 and abdominal segments 1-7, and the puparium is heavily sclerotised dark brown, barrel-shaped, bearing the dorsal shield. Fergusonina nodulosa sp. nov. forms nodular 'stem' galls initiating from the axial shoot buds. The galls are 2-8 mm in diameter with an average volume of 123 (range 25-480) mm3. Thirteen species of Hymenoptera, comprising primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids of the gall fly and associated lepidopteran inquilines, and three species of Lepidoptera inquilines were reared from galls of this new species. Fergusonina nodulosa sp. nov. is associated with the obligate mutualist nematode, Fergusobia camaldulensae Davies. The neotropical genus Elachistocleis Parker comprises 18 described species [including Elachistocleis ovalis (Schneider) which is considered a nomen dubium by Caramaschi (2010), with pending revision]. This genus is distributed in Central America and most of South America, from Panama and Trinidad to southern Paraguay, including central Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana, and Brazil (Marinho et al. 2018; Frost 2019). Currently, the tadpoles of ten species have been described and/or figured Elachistocleis bicolor (**érin-Méneville), E. cesarii (Miranda-Ribeiro), E. erythrogaster Kwet and Di-Bernardo, E. haroi Pereyra, Akmentins, Laufer and Vaira, E. muiraquitan Nunes-de-Almeida and Toledo, E. ovalis, E. panamensis (Dunn, Trapido and Evans), E. pearsei (Ruthven), E. surinamensis (Daudin), and Elachistocleis sp. (Kenny 1969; Williams & Gudynas 1987; Kwet & Di-Bernardo 1998; Duellman 2005; Lynch 2006; Rossa-Feres & Nomura 2006; Vera Candioti 2006; Magalhães et al. 2012; Pereyra et al. 2013).Mimasyngenes piauiensis Galileo, Martins & Nascimento 2014, is proposed as a synonym of Ceiupaba lineata Martins & Galileo, 1998, and the distribution is expanded to include Paraguay. The sex of the holotype of M. piauiensis is corrected to female.Gynaikothrips microchaetus Ananthakrishnan and Jagadish (1969) was described from Dharwar in Karnataka, and until now has been known only from southern India (Ananthakrishnan & Sen 1980). The original description was based on an unspecified number of syntypes, with no depositary indicated. However, one of the authors (R. Varatharajan) acquired four slides that are labelled by Ananthakrishnan as this species and bear the same collection details as given in the original description. These are assumed to be syntypes, and one female is here designated as lectotype. The other three slides are of males and are considered as paralectotypes. Further, during extensive surveys for thrips at Dampa Tiger Reserve, Mizoram (23.320 N 92.130 E) and Manipur University campus (24.820 N 93.900 E) during 2014-18, we have collected both sexes of this species from the leaves of Ficus curtipes. The freshly collected specimens were mounted onto microscope slides in Canada balsam, and identified using the keys provided by Ananthakrishnan and Sen (1980). Hence, the species is illustrated and re-described with additional features, based on the type material together with freshly collected specimens from north eastern India, Manipur and Mizoram. The following abbreviations are used for pronotal setae am-anteromarginals; aa-anteroangulars; pa-posteroangulars; ml-midlaterals; po-postocular; epim-epimerals; abdominal tergite IX setae S1, S2 & S3-setal pairs I, II and III respectively (S1 nearest the mid-line).
The genus Baseprocessa Fan & Li, 2017 is reviewed and a new species B. longiprocessa sp. nov. from Tibet is described and illustrated. Currently, the tadpoles of ten species have been described and/or figured Elachistocleis bicolor (Guérin-Méneville), E. cesarii (Miranda-Ribeiro), E. erythrogaster Kwet and Di-Bernardo, E. haroi Pereyra, Akmentins, Laufer and Vaira, E. muiraquitan Nunes-de-Almeida and Toledo, E. ovalis, E. panamensis (Dunn, Trapido and Evans), E. pearsei (Ruthven), E. surinamensis (Daudin), and Elachistocleis sp. • While the resistant pi21 gene was found only in japonica before, three Chinese indica varieties, ShuHui881, Yong4, and ZhengDa4Hao, were detected carrying the resistant pi21-2428 allele. The pi21-2428 allele and pi21-2428-containing rice germplasm, thus, provide valuable resources for breeding rice varieties, especially indica rice varieties, with durable resistance to blast disease. Our results also lay the foundation for further identification and functional characterization of the other three QTLs to better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying rice basal resistance to blast disease. In this article, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was used as a matrix polymer, the Micro-ZnO and Nano-ZnO particles were used as the inorganic filler. With the melt blending method, the Nano-ZnO/LDPE(Nano-ZnO particles doping into LDPE), Micro-ZnO/LDPE(Micro-ZnO particles doping into LDPE) and Micro-Nano-ZnO/LDPE (Nano-ZnO and Micro-ZnO particles doping into LDPE in the same time) composites were prepared. Then, the inorganic filler and the composites were dealt with structural characterizations and analysis by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Polarization microscope (PLM), and Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Besides, these samples were dealt with (alternating current) AC breakdown performance test. The micro-experimental results showed that the Micro-ZnO and Nano-ZnO particles doping reduced the crystal size and increased the crystallization rate. With the change of cell structure, the crystallinity of composites increased. The crystallinity order of different samples was as follows LDPE less then Micro-ZnO/LDPE less then Nano-ZnO/LDPE less then Micro-Nano-ZnO/LDPE. From the breakdown of the experimental result, with the same mass fraction of the different inorganic doping of particles, the breakdown strength of these composites was different. The Nano-ZnO particle doping could improve the breakdown strength of composites effectively. Among them, the breakdown strength of Nano-ZnO/LDPE and Micro-Nano-ZnO/LDPE were 11% higher and 1.3% lower than that of pure LDPE, respectively. Meanwhile, the breakdown strength of Micro-composite was the lowest but its Weibull shape coefficient was the highest. Therefore, the Micro-ZnO doping was helpful for the Nano-ZnO dispersing in the matrix, which produced the Micro-Nano-synergy effects better. The aim of this study is to develop, characterize and compare conventional liposome, deformable liposome (transfersome) and microemulsion formulations as potential topical delivery systems for meloxicam. Liposomes were characterized in terms of vesicle size, zeta potential and entrapment efficiency. https://www.selleckchem.com/ For microemulsions, particle size, electrical conductivity and viscosity studies were performed to assess the structure of the investigated systems. An ex vivo skin permeation study has been conducted to compare these formulations. The dermal and transdermal delivery of meloxicam using these formulations can be a promising alternative to conventional oral delivery of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with enhanced local and systemic onset of action and reduced side effects. This paper proposes the hypothesis that cytoplasmic organelles directly interact with each other and with gap junctions forming intracellular junctions. This hypothesis originated over four decades ago based on the observation that vesicles lining gap junctions of crayfish giant axons contain electron-opaque particles, similar in size to junctional innexons that often appear to directly interact with junctional innexons; similar particles were seen also in the outer membrane of crayfish mitochondria. Indeed, vertebrate connexins assembled into hexameric connexons are present not only in the membranes of the Golgi apparatus but also in those of the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. It seems possible, therefore, that cytoplasmic organelles may be able to exchange small molecules with each other as well as with organelles of coupled cells via gap junctions. The chemotherapeutics sorafenib and regorafenib inhibit shedding of ****class I-related chain A (****) from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells by suppressing a disintegrin and metalloprotease 9 (ADAM9). **** is a ligand for natural killer (NK) group 2 member D (NKG2D) and is expressed on tumor cells to elicit attack by NK cells. This study measured ADAM9 mRNA levels in blood samples of advanced HCC patients (n = 10). In newly diagnosed patients (n = 5), the plasma ADAM9 mRNA level was significantly higher than that in healthy controls (3.001 versus 1.00, p less then 0.05). Among four patients treated with nivolumab therapy, two patients with clinical response to nivolumab showed significant decreases in fold changes of serum ADAM9 mRNA level from 573.98 to 262.58 and from 323.88 to 85.52 (p less then 0.05); however, two patients with no response to nivolumab did not. Using the Cancer Genome Atlas database, we found that higher expression of ADAM9 in tumor tissues was associated with poorer survival of HCC patients (log-rank p = 0.00039), while ADAM10 and ADAM17 exhibited no such association. In addition, ADAM9 expression showed a positive correlation with the expression of inhibitory checkpoint molecules. This study, though small in sample size, clearly suggested that ADAM9 mRNA might serve as biomarker predicting clinical response and that the ADAM9-****-NKG2D system can be a good therapeutic target for HCC immunotherapy. Future studies are warranted to validate these findings.Participation in sports has risen in the United States over the last few years, increasing the risk of injuries such as tears to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. Previous studies have shown a correlation between knee kinematics when landing from a jump and this injury. The purpose of this study was to validate the ability of a commercially available inertial measurement units (IMUs) to accurately measure knee joint angles during a dynamic movement. Eight healthy subjects participated in the study. Validation was performed by comparing the angles measured by the wearable device to those obtained through the gold standard motion capture system when landing from a jump. Root mean square, linear regression analysis, and Bland-Altman plots were performed/constructed. The mean difference between the wearable device and the motion capture data was 8.4° (flexion/extension), 4.9° (ab/adduction), and 3.9° (rotation). In addition, the device was more accurate at smaller knee angles. In our study, a commercially available wearable IMU was able to perform fairly well under certain conditions and was less accurate in other conditions.

  • nd R0 resections disappeared (HR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.54-2.01). Conclusions and Relevance The difference in OS by quality of surgery with or without imatinib was associated with the presence of tumor rupture. When the latter was excluded, the presence of R1 margins was not associated with worse OS. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT00103168.Importance Prospective studies of the disease course in patients with morphea are lacking, particularly those comparing adults and children. Objective To investigate the disease course in patients with morphea treated with standard-of-care therapy using validated clinical outcome measures. Design, Setting, and Participants Prospective cohort study of 130 adults and children from the Morphea in Adults and Children cohort with at least 2 years of clinical follow-up and Localized Scleroderma Cutaneous Assessment Tool scores recorded at each study visit. Study patients were seen at a tertiary referral center (UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas) from November 1, 2008, through April 1, 2016. The dates of analysis were May 2016 through July 2019. Exposures All patients received standard-of-care therapy. Main Outcomes and Measures Patterns in disease activity and recurrence were examined. The time to recurrence of morphea disease activity from the first visit with inactive disease was assessed using survivappeared to improve in most patients with morphea over 6 to 12 months using previously published treatment plans, underscoring their effectiveness. Sclerosis improved more slowly (over 2-5 years), often after discontinuation of treatment, but atrophy increased slightly as sclerosis subsided. Standard-of-care therapy appears to improve disease activity, which allows sclerosis to improve, and provides relative stability of other features of disease damage. A substantial number of patients, particularly those with generalized subtype, have a relapsing-remitting course over many years. Patients with morphea should be monitored for recurrent disease activity over extended periods.Importance Mental health problems are associated with considerable occupational, medical, social, and economic burdens. Psychosocial stressors at work have been associated with a higher risk of mental disorders, but the risk of sickness absence due to a diagnosed mental disorder, indicating a more severe condition, has never been investigated in a systematic review and meta-analysis. Objective To synthesize the evidence of the association of psychosocial stressors at work with sickness absence due to a diagnosed mental disorder among adult workers. Data Sources Seven electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, Web of Science, CINAHL, Sociological Abstracts, and International Bibliography of the Social Sciences), 3 gray literature databases (Grey Literature Report, WHO-IRIS and Open Grey), and the reference lists of all eligible studies and reviews were searched in January 2017 and updated in February 2019. Study Selection Only original prospective studies evaluating the association of at least 1 psychosoness absence due to a diagnosed mental disorder compared with nonexposed workers (pooled risk ratio [RR], 1.76 [95% CI, 1.49-2.08]), as were those exposed to effort-reward imbalance (pooled RR, 1.66 [95% CI, 1.37-2.00]), job strain (pooled RR, 1.47 [95% CI, 1.24-1.74]), low job control (pooled RR, 1.25 [95% CI, 1.02-1.53]), and high psychological demands (pooled RR, 1.23 [95% CI, 1.04-1.45]). Conclusions and Relevance This meta-analysis found that workers exposed to psychosocial stressors at work were associated with a higher risk of sickness absence due to a mental disorder. A better understanding of the importance of these stressors could help physicians when evaluating their patients' mental health and work capacity.Importance First-line systemic therapy for morphea includes methotrexate with or without systemic corticosteroids. When this regimen is ineffective, not tolerated, or contraindicated, a trial of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) or mycophenolic acid (MPA)-referred to herein as mycophenolate-is recommended; however, evidence to support this recommendation remains weak. Objective To evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of mycophenolate for the treatment of morphea. Design, Setting, and Participants A retrospective cohort study was conducted from January 1, 1999, to December 31, 2018, among 77 patients with morphea from 8 institutions who were treated with mycophenolate. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was morphea disease activity, severity, and response at 0, 3 to 6, and 9 to 12 months of mycophenolate treatment. A secondary outcome was whether mycophenolate was a well-tolerated treatment of morphea. Results There were 61 female patients (79%) and 16 male patients (21%) in the study, with a medits had stable (n = 14) or improved (n = 33) disease. Twenty-seven patients (35%) achieved disease remission at completion of the study. Treatments received in conjunction with mycophenolate were frequent. Mycophenolate was well tolerated. Gastrointestinal adverse effects were the most common (24 [31%]); cytopenia (3 [4%]) and infection (2 [3%]) occurred less frequently. Conclusions and Relevance This study suggests that mycophenolate is a well-tolerated and beneficial treatment of recalcitrant, severe morphea.Prostate cancer is a slow-growing disease, but not always. Objective To identify novel IPAH susceptibility genes other than BMPR2. Design, Setting, and Participants This 2-stage, case-control genetic association study enrolled 230 patients with IPAH from 2 referral pulmonary hypertension centers in China. Eligible patients had no BMPR2 variants and were compared with 968 healthy control participants. Data were collected from January 1, 2000, to July 31, 2015, and analyzed from August 1, 2015, to May 30, 2018. Exposures PTGIS rare variants. Main Outcomes and Measures Whole-genome sequencing was performed to identify putative IPAH genes in a discovery cohort, with validation in an independent referral cohort. Correlation of genotype and hemodynamic characteristics was then evaluated at baseline and after pulmonary vasodilator testing.

  • BACKGROUND Since December 2019, a novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) began its journey around the world. Medical students, as frontline healthcare workers, are more susceptible to be infected by the virus. The aim of this study was to assess COVID-19 related knowledge, self-reported preventive behaviors and risk perception among Iranian medical students within the first week after the onset of the outbreak in Iran. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted from 26th to 28th of February, 2020. Participants were Iranian medical students (5th-7th year) whose knowledge, preventive behaviors and risk perceptions of COVID-19 were assessed using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 26 questions including 15 items about COVID-19 related knowledge, 9 items regarding preventive measures and 2 items about COVID-19 risk perception. https://www.selleckchem.com/ The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were shown to be satisfactory. RESULTS A total of 240 medical students completed the questionnaire. The mean age o work is properly cited.BACKGROUND The rapid spread of COVID-19 virus from China to other countries and outbreaks of disease require an epidemiological analysis of the disease in the shortest time and an increased awareness of effective interventions. The purpose of this study was to estimate the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran based on the SIR model. The results of the analysis of the epidemiological data of Iran from January 22 to March 24, 2020 were investigated and prediction was made until April 15, 2020. METHODS By estimating the three parameters of time-dependent transmission rate, time-dependent recovery rate, and timedependent death rate from Covid-19 outbreak in China, and using the number of Covid-19 infections in Iran, we predicted the number of patients for the next month in Iran. Each of these parameters was estimated using GAM models. All analyses were conducted in R software using the **** package. RESULTS Based on our predictions of Iran about 29000 people will be infected from March 25 to April 15, 2020. On average, 1292 people with COVID-19 are expected to be infected daily in Iran. The epidemic peaks within 3 days (March 25 to March 27, 2020) and reaches its highest point on March 25, 2020 with 1715 infected cases. CONCLUSION The most important point is to emphasize the timing of the epidemic peak, hospital readiness, government measures and public readiness to reduce social contact. © 2020 The Author(s). Since then, COVID-19 has become a global concern and health problem. METHODS We present four patients in this study, selected from among patients who presented with pneumonia symptoms and were suspicious for COVID-19. They were referred to the intended centers for COVID-19 diagnosis and management of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in southern Iran. Two nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal throat swab samples were collected from each patient and tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) using real-time reverse-transcriptase- polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR). The samples were also tested for influenza viruses and the complete respiratory panel. RESULTS In the present report, four patients were diagnosed in the starting days of COVID-19 disease in our center in southern Iran with co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus. CONCLUSION This co-infection of COVID-19 and influenza A highlights the importance of considering SARS-CoV-2 PCR assay regardless of other positive findings for other pathogens in the primary test during the epidemic. © 2020 The Author(s). Since the number of corona positive patients is increasing sharply in Iran, this study aimed to forecast the number of newly infected patients in the coming days in Iran. METHODS The data used in this study were obtained from daily reports of the Iranian Ministry of Health and the datasets provided by the Johns Hopkins University including the number of new infected cases from February 19, 2020 to March 21, 2020. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was applied to predict the number of patients during the next thirty days. RESULTS The ARIMA model forecasted an exponential increase in the number of newly detected patients. The result of this study also show that if the spreading pattern continues the same as before, the number of daily new cases would be 3574 by April 20. CONCLUSION Since this disease is highly contagious, health politicians need to make decisions to prevent its spread; otherwise, even the most advanced and capable health care systems would face problems for treating all infected patients and a substantial number of deaths will become inevitable. © 2020 The Author(s). Starting in December 2019 from China, the first cases were officially announced on February 19 in Qom city, Iran. As of April 3, 2020, 206 countries have reported a total of 932166 cases with 46764 deaths. Along with China, USA, Italy, Spain, and Germany, Iran has been suffering the hardest burden of COVID-19 outbreak. Worse still, countries like Iran are struggling with the double burden of political sanctions to provide lifesaving medical equipment and medicines to combat the emergency. METHODS Using systematic document content analysis and through the lenses of health policy triangle, this article aims to compare the policies and strategies that Iran is adopting, with the experience and recommendations of China and WHO to combat COVID-19. RESULTS Iran has formulated contextual-based policies to combat COVID-19 outbreak before and after virus entrance. Insufficient whole-government, whole-society approach in managing the outbreak, inadequate lifesaving and protective equipment, and delayed decisive governance are the biggest challenges in policy making to combat COVID-19.

  • Background Many processes contributing to the functional and structural regulation of the coronary circulation have been identified. A proper understanding of the complex interplay of these processes requires a quantitative systems approach that includes the complexity of the coronary network. The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed quantification of the branching characteristics and local hemodynamics of the human coronary circulation. https://www.selleckchem.com/mTOR.html Methods The coronary arteries of a human heart were filled post-mortem with fluorescent replica material. The frozen heart was alternately cut and block-face imaged using a high-resolution imaging cryomicrotome. From the resulting 3D reconstruction of the left coronary circulation, topological (node and loop characteristics), topographic (diameters and length of segments), and geometric (position) properties were analyzed, along with predictions of local hemodynamics (pressure and flow). Results The reconstructed left coronary tree consisted of 202,184 segments wit and VanBavel.Mild normobaric hypoxia (NH) and modest exercise have multiple beneficial effects on health, but the changes in physiological function induced by NH and/or exercise remain unclear. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the specific effects of NH and/or exercise on cardiac function and myocardial structure and behavior including sleep-activity and negative geotaxis in aged Drosophila. We also assessed the survival rate of flies after hypoxia and/or exercise. One-thousand wild-type w1118 virgin female flies were randomly divided into four groups and treated with NH and/or exercise from ages 3-6 weeks. We found that exercise remarkably delayed the decline of actin and myosin and the age-related changes in cardiac structure, improved abnormal cardiac contraction, and enhanced the cardiac pumping force by inducing cardiac hypertrophy and delaying deterioration of cardiac contractility and diastolic compliance, and improved abnormal heart contraction. NH also increased the content of actin and myosin, but induced a decrease in heart diameter and heart rate, as well as an increase in the number of mitochondria and deeper sleep, which may be the manifestation of energy saving under long-term hypoxia. Both NH and exercise improved sleep quality and climbing ability of aged flies, as well as extended the maximum life span, which shows the benefits of hypoxia and exercise. Finally, the superposition of NH and exercise did not impart any obvious physiological and behavior improvement. Therefore, it is necessary to further explore the appropriate combination of hypoxia and exercise. Feather follicle stem cells are the basis for driving feather development and are regulated by various molecular signaling pathways in the feather follicle microenvironment. To date, the roles of the Wnt, Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP), Notch, and Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathways in the regulation of feather growth and regeneration are among the best understood. While these pathways regulate feather morphogenesis in different stages, their dysregulation results in a low feather growth rate, poor quality of plumage, and depilation. Additionally, exogenous nutrient intervention can affect the feather follicle cycle, promote the formation of the feather shaft and feather branches, preventing plumage abnormalities. This review focuses on our understanding of the signaling pathways involved in the transcriptional control of feather morphogenesis and explores the impact of nutritional factors on feather growth and regeneration in poultry. This work may help to develop novel mechanisms by which follicle stem cells can be manipulated to produce superior plumage that enhances poultry carcass quality. To study the control of myokine regulation of β-cell function, SkM biopsies were taken from non-diabetic (ND) and Type 2 diabetic (T2D) subjects and satellite cells cultured to myotubes (MT). MT were also treated with lipopolysaccharide (infectious inflammation - II) or a combination of glucose (10 mM), insulin (120 pM), and palmitate (0.4 mM) (metabolic inflammation - MI) to model the inflammatory and metabolic conditions seen in vivo with T2D. Conditioned media (CM) was collected from MT after 24 h and used to treat INS-1 cells for 24 h. Cell viability, total insulin content, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and maximal (IBMX-stimulated) IS (ISmax) were monitored. Under baseline conditions, CM from ND and T2D MT had no effects on INS-1 cell viability, insulin content, GSIS, or ISmax. After exposure to II, CM from ND-MT augmented GSIS in INS-1 cells by 100 ± 25% over control (p less then 0.05); T2D-CM had no effect. After exposure to MI, T2D-CM suppressed GSIS by 35 ± 5% (p less then 0.05); ND-CM was without effect. Under either of these conditions cell viability, total insulin content and ISmax were unaffected. Effects of CM on GSIS were lost after CM was boiled. Both augmentation of GSIS by ND-CM from II-treated MT, and suppression by T2D-CM from MI-treated MT, were inhibited by wortmannin, Ro 31-8220, and SB203580. In summary (1) ND-MT are able to augment GSIS when stressed, (2) T2D-MT responding to a diabetic-like environment secrete myokines that suppress GSIS, (3) Unknown protein factors exert effects specifically on GSIS, possibly through PI-3K, PKC, and/or p38 MAPK. In T2D, both insulin resistance and a suppression of adaptive increased insulin secretion are intrinsic properties of SkM that can contribute to the full T2D phenotype. High altitude populations (i.e., Nepalese Sherpa) may have arrhythmias resistant adaptations that prevent arrhythmogenesis at altitude, though this has not been documented in other High altitude groups, including those diagnosed with chronic mountain sickness (CMS). We investigated whether healthy (CMS-) and CMS afflicted (CMS +) Andeans exhibit cardiac arrhythmias under acute apneic stress at altitude. Methods and Results Electrocardiograms (lead II) were collected in CMS- (N = 9), CMS + (N = 8), and Lowlanders (N = 13) following several days at 4330 m (Cerro de Pasco, Peru). ECG rhythm and HR were assessed at both rest and during maximal volitional apnea. Both CMS- and CMS + had similar basal HR (69 ± 8 beats/min vs. 62 ± 11 beats/min), while basal HR was higher in Lowlanders (77 ± 18 beats/min; P less then 0.05 versus CMS +). Apnea elicited significant bradycardia (nadir -32 ± 15 beats/min; P less then 0.
