    Lanolin is often included when patch testing for common contact allergens. The clinical relevance of a positive patch test reaction to lanolin markers is, however, still a subject for debate.

    To evaluate Amerchol L101 as a marker of lanolin allergy and investigate the clinical impact of lanolin-containing moisturizers on healthy and damaged skin using the repeated open application test (ROAT).

    Twelve test subjects and 14 controls were patch tested with Amerchol L 101 and additional lanolin markers. Subsequently, a blinded ROAT was performed on the arms of the study participants for 4 weeks. Each participant applied a lanolin-free cream base and two different lanolin-containing test creams twice daily on one arm with intact skin and on the other arm with irritant dermatitis, induced by sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

    Eleven test subjects (92%) had positive patch test reactions to Amerchol L 101 when retested and one test subject (8%) had a doubtful reaction. None of the study participants had any skin reactions to the ROAT on intact skin and all participants healed during the ROAT on damaged skin.

  • As ischaemic heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death nationally and globally, cardiology services need to prepare for a significant increase in workload in the recovery phase and develop new pathways to urgently help those adversely affected by the changes in service provision.Radiology signs have long been described in ways that communicate the imagery around us to enhance our cognitive perception. Here, we describe the use and limitations of 10 such signs in neuroradiology, divided into three groups. The first are signs that are reliable for a specific diagnosis, such as the Medusa head sign indicating a developmental venous anomaly, or a racing car sign in agenesis of corpus callosum. The second group of signs helps us to diagnose rare conditions, such as the onion skin sign in Balo's concentric sclerosis. The third group is of unreliable signs that may lead clinicians astray. For example, the absence of a swallow-tail sign in Parkinson's disease or the presence of a hummingbird sign and Mickey Mouse sign in progressive supranuclear palsy. The appropriate use of these signs in clinical practice is essential.

    To determine whether do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders differ among patients with ESKD compared with other critically ill patients, including those with diseases of other major organs, we investigated DNR orders on admission to intensive care units (ICUs) among 106,873 patients in the United States.

    Major organ disease uniformly associated with increased risk of hospital mortality, particularly for cirrhosis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.67; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 2.30 to 3.08), and ESKD (aOR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.31 to 1.65). Compared with critically ill patients without major organ disease, patients with stroke, cancer, heart failure, dementia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cirrhosis were statistically more likely to have a DNR order on ICU admission; those with ESKD were mmunity, as well as a missed opportunity to minimize potentially needless patient suffering, requires further study.The majority of clinical deaths in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are due to chemoresistance and aggressive metastases, with high prevalence in younger women of African ethnicity. Although tumorigenic drivers are numerous and varied, the drivers of metastatic transition remain largely unknown. Here, we uncovered a molecular dependence of TNBC tumors on the TRIM37 network, which enables tumor cells to resist chemotherapeutic as well as metastatic stress. TRIM37-directed histone H2A monoubiquitination enforces changes in DNA repair that rendered TP53-mutant TNBC cells resistant to chemotherapy. Chemotherapeutic drugs triggered a positive feedback loop via ATM/E2F1/STAT signaling, amplifying the TRIM37 network in chemoresistant cancer cells. High expression of TRIM37 induced transcriptomic changes characteristic of a metastatic phenotype, and inhibition of TRIM37 substantially reduced the in vivo propensity of TNBC cells. Selective delivery of TRIM37-specific antisense oligonucleotides using antifolate receptor 1-conjugated nanoparticles in combination with chemotherapy suppressed lung metastasis in spontaneous metastatic murine models. Identified mutations were enriched in essential protein domains and genes identified by NIPPER were associated with responsiveness to multiple immunotherapy modalities. These genes were used to devise an interactome network propagation framework integrated with drug-associated gene signatures to identify potential immunomodulatory drug candidates. Together, our systems-level analysis results help interpret the heterogeneous immune responses among patients and serve as a resource for future functional studies and targeted therapeutics.

  • Clinical differentiation between cystic lesions of endodontic and non-endodontic origin is of importance because correct diagnosis may affect treatment decision making. Most radicular cysts are treated with conservative approaches and, therefore, are not surgically removed. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of clinical diagnosis of periapical lesions as compared to the histological findings, and to evaluate various associated factors. All biopsy specimens submitted for histological evaluation from 2002 to 2009 were assessed. Only cases of periapical lesions with complete patient data and clinical diagnosis were included. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the clinical diagnosis were calculated and various patient-related factors were evaluated. Of the 4,908 cases, 183 met inclusion criteria. Histologically, there were 171 lesions of radicular cysts and 12 cases of non-endodontic cysts, including OKC and Incisive Canal Cyst. The diagnostic accuracy for clinical diagnosis for radicular cysts was 91.84% and 91.84% for non-endodontic cysts. There was a high accuracy of clinical differentiation between cystic lesions of endodontic and non-endodontic origin. However, some non-endodontic lesions may be incorrectly diagnosed clinically as lesions of endodontic origin. Histological evaluation may be necessary for the correct diagnosis. Further clinical studies are needed to evaluate clinical examination and histological diagnosis of periapical lesions.The advent of novel nanostructured materials has enabled wearable and 3D electronics. The effects of TD-198946 on IDD at two different time points (immediate treatment model, immediately after the puncture; latent treatment model, 2 weeks after the puncture) were investigated using a mouse tail-disc puncture model. At both time points, TD-198946 prevented a loss in disc height. Histological analysis also demonstrated the preservation of the NP structures. To take into account the impact of changes in irradiation power on the PDI model, the selected parameters were made appropriately dependent on this factor. The paper presents several variants of parameter modification with an evaluation of the model fitting quality criterion. The discussion on appropriate selection of parameters to be modified was carried out as a comparative analysis of several case studies. The extended logistic PDI model obtained in the conducted research effectively describes the dynamics of microorganism mortality in the whole tested irradiation power range.The evaluation of Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymatic activity is essential to estimate drug pharmacokinetics. Numerous CYP allelic variants have been identified; the functional characterisation of these variants is required for their application in precision medicine. Results from heterologous expression systems using mammalian cells can be integrated in in vivo studies; however, other systems such as E. coli, bacteria, yeast, and baculoviruses are generally used owing to the difficulty in expressing high CYP levels in mammalian cells. Here, by optimising transfection and supplementing conditions, we developed a heterologous expression system using 293FT cells to evaluate the enzymatic activities of three CYP isoforms (CYP1A2, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4). Moreover, we established co-expression with cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase and cytochrome b5. This expression system would be a potential complementary or beneficial alternative approach for the pharmacokinetic evaluation of clinically used and developing drugs in vitro.

The attitudes of 1096 respondents were assessed with the contrastive vignette method, using two pairs of vignettes about declining NIPT and termination of pregnancy. Most respondents either agreed with a woman's decision to decline NIPT or were neutral about it, stating that this decision should be made independently by women, and does not warrant judgement by others. Interestingly, funding policies did influence respondents' attitudes significantly more respondents disagreed with declining NIPT when it was fully reimbursed. Respondents had similar attitudes to the vignettes on termination and continuation of pregnancy in case of Down's syndrome. In case of Edwards' or Patau's syndrome, however, significantly more respondents disagreed with continuation, citing the severity of the disorder and the child's best interests. This study demonstrates broad acknowledgement of women's freedom of choice in Dutch society; a finding that may help to rebut existing concerns about societal pressure for pregnant women to participate in prenatal screening. Finally, antigen stimulation of human whole blood, analyzed by a previously unreported mass cytometry assay, indicated broader immunogenicity of gdPT compared to pertussis toxoid. D-Tagatose 6-phosphate sequentially inhibits phosphomannose isomerase, causing a reduction in D-glucose 6-phosphate and D-fructose 6-phosphate, common substrates for glycolysis, and in D-mannose 6-phosphate, needed to synthesize mannan and related products. These chain-inhibitory effects on metabolic steps are significant enough to block initial infection and structural development needed for reproduction such as conidiophore and conidiospore formation of downy mildew.

The attitudes of 1096 respondents were assessed with the contrastive vignette method, using two pairs of vignettes about declining NIPT and termination of pregnancy. Most respondents either agreed with a woman's decision to decline NIPT or were neutral about it, stating that this decision should be made independently by women, and does not warrant judgement by others. Interestingly, funding policies did influence respondents' attitudes significantly more respondents disagreed with declining NIPT when it was fully reimbursed. Respondents had similar attitudes to the vignettes on termination and continuation of pregnancy in case of Down's syndrome. In case of Edwards' or Patau's syndrome, however, significantly more respondents disagreed with continuation, citing the severity of the disorder and the child's best interests.   • Opioid overdose is a major public health concern in the United States. Naloxone education and distribution can decrease the risk of overdose deaths. A previous study showed that a longitudinal, multi-attempt telephone intervention by a single pharmacy resident was effective for distributing naloxone to a high-risk veteran population.

    The purpose of this project was to investigate whether a team-based, single-attempt telephone outreach event is effective for distributing naloxone to at-risk outpatient veterans.

    The effect of communication between referring and accepting clinicians during patient transitions to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on diagnostic quality is largely unknown. This pilot study aims to determine the feasibility of using focused ethnography to understand the relationship between referral communication and the diagnostic process for critically ill children.

    We conducted focused ethnography in an academic tertiary referral PICU by directly observing the referral and admission of 3 non-electively admitted children 0-17years old. We also conducted 21 semi-structured interviews of their parents and admitting PICU staff (intensivists, fellows/residents, medical students, nurses, and respiratory therapists) and reviewed their medical records post-discharge.

    Performing focused ethnography in a busy PICU is feasible. We identified three areas for additional exploration (1) how information transfer affects the PICU diagnostic process; (2) how uncertainty in patient assessment affects the decision to transfer to the PICU; and (3) how the PICU team's expectations are influenced by referral communication.

    Critically ill patients are at risk for intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and related complications such as organ failure, abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS), and death. This study aimed to determine the value of urinary and serum intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) levels as early marker for IAH-associated complications.

    A prospective observational study was conducted in two academic institutional mixed medical-surgical ICUs in the Netherlands. Adult patients admitted to the ICU with two or more risk factors for IAH (198) were included. Urinary and serum I-FABP and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) were measured every six hours during 72h.

    Fifteen (8%) patients developed ACS and 74 (37%) developed new organ failure. I-FABP and IAP were positively correlated. Patients who developed ACS had higher median baseline levels of urinary I-FABP (235(P

    To determine the dimensions of mucosal defects that can be covered by a bipedicled vocal fold mucosal flap.

    We used 20 adults human larynges (10 of each gender) excised from cadavers, divided into 2 groups of 10 larynges (5 of each gender) each. In one group (the normal flap group), we created the largest possible bipedicled vocal fold mucosal flap and then quantified the dimensions of the largest defect that could be covered by displacing the flap medially. In the other group (the augmented flap group), the flap was augmented laterally with mucosa from the laryngeal ventricle and we determined whether the larger flap would effectively cover larger defects.

    The mean width of mucosal defect capable of being covered was 1.51 mm when the normal bipedicled flap was employed and was 1.67 mm when the augmented flap was applied. However, the difference was not statistically significant. We found that defect size correlated with vocal fold length, width and flap size in the normal flap group, whereas it correlated only with vocal fold length in the augmented flap group. The bipedicled flap is capable of covering larger defects in males.

    Enlargement of a bipedicled vocal fold mucosal flap with laryngeal ventricular mucosa does not necessarily translate to an increase in the size of defect that can be covered. On average, the flap should be 30% larger than the width of the defect.   • In comparison with clinicopathological characteristics, the algorithm high versus low showed correlations with microsatellite instability, hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET), and TP53 mutational status. The algorithm Q1/Q4 versus Q2/Q3 appeared to be correlated with the phenotype as per the Laurén classification, microsatellite instability, EBV status, and p53 expression pattern. The algorithm less then 90% = 0 and less then 50% = 3+ versus ≥90% = 0 or ≥50% = 3+ showed correlations with the EBV status, microsatellite instability, grading, and p53 expression pattern. However, different algorithms for p53 immunohistochemical evaluation cannot be used to predict TP53 mutations in CIN GCs in individual cases.Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the uterus are often associated with pregnancy and are delivered with the placenta. We describe the clinical, pathologic, and molecular findings in nine cases of placenta-associated IMT (PaIMT). All the lesions were incidentally discovered at delivery or on placental pathological examination. The maternal age ranged from 21 to 41 (mean = 30.6) years. Eight patients had high-risk pregnancies, and when known, all patients were multigravida. Macroscopically, eight tumors were well defined, ranging in size from 2 to 6 cm present at the maternal surface of the placenta (n = 3) and membranes (n = 4) or separately delivered with the placenta (n = 2). All nine lesions revealed classical IMT morphology with spindle cells associated with a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and thin elongated vessels. Five showed decidualization, and five showed coagulative necrosis. All tumors expressed CD10. Of the seven tumors that were anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) positive, six were confirmed to have an ALK rearrangement by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), whereas one failed FISH testing. Fusions included TIMP3-ALK (n = 3), THBS1-ALK (n = 2), and a novel SYN3-ALK fusion (n = 1). Clinical follow-up was available in three patients, with no recurrence reported. There appears to be an increased frequency of uterine IMTs in pregnancy and associated with the placenta. No PaIMT has behaved aggressively, although follow-up has been quite limited. The histopathological diagnosis in children and adults in both genital and nongenital LS is considered to be the same and encompasses a broad range of possible characteristics. Clinical manifestations and treatment options of genital LS in children are different depending on gender. The vast majority of boys are treated with circumcision, making for a larger amount of information on the histopathology of genital LS in boys, whereas substantial information on the histopathology of juvenile vulvar LS is lacking. In girls, vulvar LS almost always persists beyond puberty and, therefore, presents a particular challenge to clinicians and cause for concern for the patient. Vulvar LS in childhood and adolescence (juveniles) is underreported, and there are uncertainties with regard to the long-term course of the disease when it occurs at an age when the vulva is still developing. The present study investigates biopsies of 100 juvenile cases of vulvar LS and analyzes the presence or absence of the most salient histopathological characteristics of LS that are described in the literature. The algorithm less then 90% = 0 and less then 50% = 3+ versus ≥90% = 0 or ≥50% = 3+ showed correlations with the EBV status, microsatellite instability, grading, and p53 expression pattern. We describe the clinical, pathologic, and molecular findings in nine cases of placenta-associated IMT (PaIMT). All the lesions were incidentally discovered at delivery or on placental pathological examination. The maternal age ranged from 21 to 41 (mean = 30.6) years. Eight patients had high-risk pregnancies, and when known, all patients were multigravida. Macroscopically, eight tumors were well defined, ranging in size from 2 to 6 cm present at the maternal surface of the placenta (n = 3) and membranes (n = 4) or separately delivered with the placenta (n = 2). All nine lesions revealed classical IMT morphology with spindle cells associated with a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and thin elongated vessels. Five showed decidualization, and five showed coagulative necrosis. All tumors expressed CD10. Of the seven tumors that were anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) positive, six were confirmed to have an ALK rearrangement by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), whereas one failed FISH testing. Fusions included TIMP3-ALK (n = 3), THBS1-ALK (n = 2), and a novel SYN3-ALK fusion (n = 1). Clinical follow-up was available in three patients, with no recurrence reported. There appears to be an increased frequency of uterine IMTs in pregnancy and associated with the placenta. No PaIMT has behaved aggressively, although follow-up has been quite limited. In girls, vulvar LS almost always persists beyond puberty and, therefore, presents a particular challenge to clinicians and cause for concern for the patient. Vulvar LS in childhood and adolescence (juveniles) is underreported, and there are uncertainties with regard to the long-term course of the disease when it occurs at an age when the vulva is still developing.   • Large animal teaching hospitals often struggle to maintain consistent teaching caseloads, which are affected by seasonal variations, economic pressures, increased abilities of local large animal practices to hospitalize large animals, and client intolerance for the operational needs of an academic mission. Non-academic large animal practices enjoy a more consistent caseload but suffer from a lack of emergency relief and a limited ability to share emergency duties, which may have adverse effects on work-life balance. An academic, on-farm, large animal emergency relief service can combine multiple clinics' emergency services to increase overall caseload and the probability of consistent teaching exposure for veterinary students. In late November of 2013, the Large Animal Teaching Hospital at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine adopted a business model to provide a large animal emergency relief service to area practitioners; enhance student learning via increased emergency caseload; and advance the academic mission to develop practice-ready graduates. Providing this service contributes to the well-being of area practitioners and enriches student learning through increased caseload.This study aimed to investigate the effects of a weight loss program (WLP) on biochemical and immunological profile, and cardiovascular parameters in a cohort of dogs with naturally occurring obesity. Eleven obese dogs [body condition scoring (BCS), ≥7/9] were enrolled into the study and underwent clinical and cardiovascular examination, and blood testing before (T0) and after 6 months (T1) of WLP. Eleven normal weight (BCS, 4/5) healthy dogs were used as a control (CTR) group. Compared to the CTR group, at T0 obese dogs expressed higher serum leptin concentrations (p less then 0.0005) that significantly decreased after weight loss (p less then 0.005) but remained higher than the CTR group. Furthermore, obese dogs showed considerably lower levels (p less then 0.0005) of regulatory T cell (Treg) compared to the CTR group, but they did not change after weight loss at T1. Thus, in the present work, we studied the effects on the magnitude and type of immunity elicited in **** and cattle in response to a vaccine based on inactivated FMD virus (iFMDV) formulated with ISPA. It was demonstrated that iFMDV-ISPA induced protection in **** against challenge and elicited a specific antibody response in sera, characterized by a balanced Th1/Th2 profile. Besides this, the addition of VD3 at 800 and 1,200 IU to 3.5% Ca level diets enhanced tn at 3.5% Ca, but parathyroid hormone levels were not affected. In conclusion, increasing Ca levels in the diet of laying hens to 4% during the late production phase could be a useful tool to improve laying performance, eggshell quality, Haugh unit score, and physiological and immunological status. Besides, VD3 at a 1,000 IU/kg diet to 3.5% Ca improved performance of hens fed 3.5% Ca, showing that the potential impact of VD3 depends on Ca concentrations.

Extra physiotherapy time has been proven to improve functional outcome and shorten length of stay, but is costly. Considering their key role in caring for older people, involving informal caregivers in rehabilitation might further improve functional performance.

There is a need to improve the identification and provision of support for women experiencing high fear of childbirth. However it is uncertain as to whether existing measurement tools have appropriate content validity (i.e. cover the relevant domains within the construct), practical utility, and whether they are acceptable for use with a UK population. This study aimed to (1) identify the utility and acceptability of existing measures of fear of childbirth (FOC) with a small UK sample and (2) map the content of existing measures to the key concepts of fear of childbirth established by previous research.

Thirty-four candidate miRNAs related to betalain biosynthesis were differentially expressed. The expression patterns of those differential expressed miRNAs were analyzed in various pitaya tissues by RT-qPCR. A significantly negative correlation was detected between the expression levels of half those miRNAs and corresponding target genes.     Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (p-NENs) are a group of highly heterogeneous tumors with distinct clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis. In 2017, in order to better stratify patients into prognostic groups and predicting their outcomes, World Health Organization (WHO) officially updated its grading system for p-NENs which distinguished these neoplasms among Grading 1 (G1) pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (p-NETs), G2 p-NETs, G3 p-NETs and G3 pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinomas (p-NECs). However, this new grading classification for p-NENs has not yet been rigorously validated.

    Data of patients who were surgically treated and histopathologically diagnosed as p-NENs at West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2002 to December 2018 were retrospectively collected and analyzed according the novel WHO 2017 grading classification.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (p-NENs) are a group of highly heterogeneous tumors with distinct clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis. In 2017, in order to better stratify patients into prognostic groups and predicting their outcomes, World Health Organization (WHO) officially updated its grading system for p-NENs which distinguished these neoplasms among Grading 1 (G1) pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (p-NETs), G2 p-NETs, G3 p-NETs and G3 pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinomas (p-NECs). However, this new grading classification for p-NENs has not yet been rigorously validated. Data of patients who were surgically treated and histopathologically diagnosed as p-NENs at West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2002 to December 2018 were retrospectively collected and analyzed according the novel WHO 2017 grading classification. We eventually enrolled 480 eligible patients with p-NENs in our present study, in which 150 patients with WHO 2017 G1 p-NETs, 158 with G2 p-NETs, 64 with G3 p-NETs and 108 with G3 p-NECs were identified.

The numerical results reveal a nonmonotonic dependence of the power-law exponents on the slab width and a nontrivial kink in the low-frequency susceptibility spectra. We also find qualitative agreement of these theoretical results to event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of polydisperse hard-sphere systems. In particular, the nontrivial dependence of the dynamical properties on the slab width is well reproduced.While cracks in isotropic homogeneous materials propagate straight, perpendicularly to the tensile axis, cracks in natural and synthetic composites deflect from a straight path, often increasing the toughness of the material. Those properties include the anisotropy of the fracture energy, which we vary several fold by increasing the volume fraction of orientationally ordered alumina (Al_2O_3) platelets inside a polymer matrix, and a microstructure-dependent process zone size that is found to modulate the additional stabilizing or destabilizing effect of the nonsingular stress acting parallel to the crack. Those properties predict the existence of an anisotropy threshold for crack kinking and explain the surprisingly strong dependence of this threshold on sample geometry and load distribution.We address the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a many-body system when one of its Hamiltonian parameters is driven across a first-order quantum transition (FOQT). In particular, we consider systems subject to boundary conditions favoring one of the two phases separated by the FOQT. These issues are investigated within the paradigmatic one-dimensional quantum Ising model, at the FOQTs driven by the longitudinal magnetic field h, with boundary conditions that favor the same magnetized phase (EFBC) or opposite magnetized phases (OFBC). We study the dynamic behavior for an instantaneous quench and for a protocol in which h is slowly varied across the FOQT. We develop a dynamic finite-size scaling theory for both EFBC and OFBC, which displays some remarkable differences with respect to the case of neutral boundary conditions. The corresponding relevant timescale shows a qualitative different size dependence in the two cases it increases exponentially with the size in the case of EFBC, and as a power of the size in the case of OFBC.We present an alternative type of parity-time (PT)-symmetric generalized Scarf-II potentials, which makes possible for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in the classical linear Schrödinger system to possess fully real spectra with unique features such as the multiple PT-symmetric breaking behaviors and to support one-dimensional (1D) stable PT-symmetric solitons of power-law waveform, namely power-law solitons, in focusing Kerr-type nonlinear media. Moreover, PT-symmetric high-order solitons are also derived numerically in 1D and 2D settings. Around the exactly obtained nonlinear propagation constants, families of 1D and 2D localized nonlinear modes are also found numerically. By studying such conditioned processes, we demonstrate that low-frequency negative values of current arise from typical events and high-frequency positive values of current arises from rare events. We demonstrate how these observations can inform the sculpting of time-dependent potential landscapes with a specific frequency response.We consider a quantum system such as a qubit, interacting with a bath of fermions as in the Fröhlich polaron model. The interaction Hamiltonian is thus linear in the system variable and quadratic in the fermions. Using the recently developed extension of Feynman-Vernon theory to nonharmonic baths we evaluate quadratic and the quartic terms in the influence action. We find that for this model the quartic term vanish by symmetry arguments. Although the influence of the bath on the system is of the same form as from bosonic harmonic oscillators up to effects to sixth order in the system-bath interaction, the temperature dependence is nevertheless rather different, unless rather contrived models are considered.

An epidemic respiratory disease instigated by a new coronavirus was initially identified in and has resulted in the current global dissemination. This viral strain and its related disease has been termed "SARS-CoV-2" and "coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated "COVID-19" or "2019-nCoV"), respectively, which is transmitted simply between individuals. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the COVID-19 outburst as a pandemic on March 11, which necessitates a cooperative endeavour globally for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. The absence of previous, and minimum present-day information, particularly concerning the path of contagion have precluded the control of this disease. The present article, therefore, describes the SARS-CoV-2 paths of contagion such as drinking water, solid waste, sewer water, ambient air, and the rest of emerging likely paths.Boron (B) deficiency and surplus are the main factors that affect plant growth and yield. A better understanding of the response mechanisms of plant reproductive organs to stress induced by B deficiency and surplus could provide new insights to potential strategies for improving seed yield and quality. Flowers and seeds from alfalfa 'Aohan' showed different metabolite profiles and resistance capacity under B deficiency and surplus conditions. B deficiency led to the excessive accumulation of sugars and phenolic compounds in alfalfa 'Aohan' and seeds, respectively, thus causing abscission or the abortion of reproductive organs. In contrast, B surplus severely reduced the levels of metabolites associated with amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, resulting in the flowers falling and, therefore, low seed yield. Overall, B deficiency predominantly reduced seed yield and quality of alfalfa 'Aohan', while B surplus mainly affected seed yield of alfalfa 'Aohan'.In this study, we first reviewed the current research progress regarding the presence of environmental microplastics (MPs) in environment in China from 2010 to 2019. Results showed that (1) current research has primarily focused on river and marine environments rather than soils and dusts, mainly located in eastern China, i.e., the Yangtze river, Poyang lake, Dongting lake, Yellow sea, and Bohai sea; (2) the abundance of MPs found in water bodies (sediments) of the rivers in China ranged from 3.9 to 7900 items·m-3 (19.0 × 103-13600.5 × 103 items·km-2), and 20-24300 items·kg-2 (170-5500 × 106 items·km-2) in the sediments, respectively; in lake water the range was 340-8900 items·m-3 (5 × 103-340 × 105 items·km-2) and 8 to 1200 items·m-2/25-300 items·kg-1 in the sediments, respectively; in marine water the range was 0.003-540 items·m-3 (0-380,100 item·km-2) and 1.3-14700 item·kg-1 in the sediments, respectively; in fish, shellfish, and natural planktons from ocean and freshwater, the range was 0-57 items·individuals-1 (0-168 items·g-1); (3) The absorption and toxicological effects of MPs in freshwater and oceans have mainly focused on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS); (4) the sources of microplastics in soils and dusts primarily come from urban/town activities; for rivers and lakes (estuary), they primarily come from urban activities; for coastal waters, fishing gear and nets, and the maritime activities were the main sources.Harmful Phaeocystis blooms disrupt seawater recreation and pose serious challenges to aquatic animals. The growth performance, phenotypic traits, and antioxidant responses of Brachionus plicatilis Müller to different proportions of Phaeocystis globosa were evaluated. B. plicatilis rotifers were exposed to cultures with Chlorella sp. and P. globosa alone and in mixtures of these two algae with proportions of 25%, 50%, and 75%. The total proportions of the two algae were maintained at 100%. Results showed that P. globosa inhibited the rotifer net reproduction rate, intrinsic growth rate, and finite rate of increase (P less then 0.01). It induced the formation of defense phenotypic traits in terms of the increased posterolateral spine length and the reduced body length, swimming speed, and grazing rate of B. plicatilis (P less then 0.001). Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities decreased, but the reactive oxygen species levels increased as the proportions of P. globosa increased (P less then 0.01). The mixture of 50% Chlorella and 50% Phaeocystis positively affected the glutathione content, glutathione peroxidase activity, and generation time of rotifers (P less then 0.01). Although P. globosa released toxicants with harmful effects on the growth performance of B. plicatilis, rotifers changed their antioxidant defense system and formed defense phenotypic traits in response to eutrophic conditions.Chronic exposure to fluoride (F) beyond the permissible limit (1.5 ppm) is known to cause detrimental health effects by induction of oxidative stress-mediated DNA damage overpowering the DNA repair machinery. In the present study, we assessed F induced oxidative stress through monitoring biochemical parameters and looked into the effect of chronic F exposure on two crucial DNA repair genes Ogg1 and Rad51 having important role against ROS induced DNA damages. To address this issue, we exposed Swiss albino **** to an environmentally relevant concentration of fluoride (15 ppm NaF) for 8 months. Results revealed histoarchitectural damages in liver, brain, kidney and spleen. Depletion of GSH, increase in lipid peroxidation and catalase activity in liver and brain confirmed the generation of oxidative stress. qRT-PCR result showed that expressions of Ogg1 and Rad51 were altered after F exposure in the affected organs. Promoter hypermethylation was associated with the downregulation of Rad51. F-induced DNA damage and the compromised DNA repair machinery triggered intrinsic pathway of apoptosis in liver and brain.

Results showed that (1) current research has primarily focused on river and marine environments rather than soils and dusts, mainly located in eastern China, i.e., the Yangtze river, Poyang lake, Dongting lake, Yellow sea, and Bohai sea; (2) the abundance of MPs found in water bodies (sediments) of the rivers in China ranged from 3.9 to 7900 items·m-3 (19.0 × 103-13600.5 × 103 items·km-2), and 20-24300 items·kg-2 (170-5500 × 106 items·km-2) in the sediments, respectively; in lake water the range was 340-8900 items·m-3 (5 × 103-340 × 105 items·km-2) and 8 to 1200 items·m-2/25-300 items·kg-1 in the sediments, respectively; in marine water the range was 0.003-540 items·m-3 (0-380,100 item·km-2) and 1.3-14700 item·kg-1 in the sediments, respectively; in fish, shellfish, and natural planktons from ocean and freshwater, the range was 0-57 items·individuals-1 (0-168 items·g-1); (3) The absorption and toxicological effects of MPs in freshwater and oceans have mainly focused on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS); (4) the sources of microplastics in soils and dusts primarily come from urban/town activities; for rivers and lakes (estuary), they primarily come from urban activities; for coastal waters, fishing gear and nets, and the maritime activities were the main sources.Harmful Phaeocystis blooms disrupt seawater recreation and pose serious challenges to aquatic animals. The growth performance, phenotypic traits, and antioxidant responses of Brachionus plicatilis Müller to different proportions of Phaeocystis globosa were evaluated. B. plicatilis rotifers were exposed to cultures with Chlorella sp. and P. globosa alone and in mixtures of these two algae with proportions of 25%, 50%, and 75%. The total proportions of the two algae were maintained at 100%. Results showed that P. globosa inhibited the rotifer net reproduction rate, intrinsic growth rate, and finite rate of increase (P less then 0.01). It induced the formation of defense phenotypic traits in terms of the increased posterolateral spine length and the reduced body length, swimming speed, and grazing rate of B. plicatilis (P less then 0.001). Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities decreased, but the reactive oxygen species levels increased as the proportions of P. globosa increased (P less then 0.01). The mixture of 50% Chlorella and 50% Phaeocystis positively affected the glutathione content, glutathione peroxidase activity, and generation time of rotifers (P less then 0.01). Although P. globosa released toxicants with harmful effects on the growth performance of B. plicatilis, rotifers changed their antioxidant defense system and formed defense phenotypic traits in response to eutrophic conditions.Chronic exposure to fluoride (F) beyond the permissible limit (1.5 ppm) is known to cause detrimental health effects by induction of oxidative stress-mediated DNA damage overpowering the DNA repair machinery. In the present study, we assessed F induced oxidative stress through monitoring biochemical parameters and looked into the effect of chronic F exposure on two crucial DNA repair genes Ogg1 and Rad51 having important role against ROS induced DNA damages. To address this issue, we exposed Swiss albino mice to an environmentally relevant concentration of fluoride (15 ppm NaF) for 8 months. Results revealed histoarchitectural damages in liver, brain, kidney and spleen. Depletion of GSH, increase in lipid peroxidation and catalase activity in liver and brain confirmed the generation of oxidative stress. qRT-PCR result showed that expressions of Ogg1 and Rad51 were altered after F exposure in the affected organs. Promoter hypermethylation was associated with the downregulation of Rad51. F-induced DNA damage and the compromised DNA repair machinery triggered intrinsic pathway of apoptosis in liver and brain.
