Pterygium is a triangular fibrovascular subepithelial ingrowth of degenerative bulbar conjunctival tissue over the cornea. It is now considered to be a result of uncontrolled cellular proliferation as overexpression of p53 protein and Ki-67 nuclear protein was found in the epithelium. This study was done to find the expression of p53 and Ki-67 with the severity and duration of the pterygium to explain the etiopathogenesis.
Data were analyzed from 43 Indian participants of all age groups. All patients were divided according to the severity of pterygium (mild, moderate, and severe groups) and according to the duration of pterygium (<4 years and >4 years). The samples were studied by immunohistochemistry by using antibodies against p53 and Ki-67 proteins considering >5% expression as significant.
Of 43 cases, p53 and Ki-67 expression were positive in 33 cases. In mild, moderate, and severe cases p53 positivity was 33.3%, 78.4%, 100%, respectively. P53 expression increased with duration, 79.3% positive in <4 years, and 92.9% positive in >4 years. With increasing severity of pterygium, mild, moderate, and severe cases, Ki-67 positivity was 66.7%, 78.37%, 66.7%, respectively. Ki-67 expression with duration, 79.3% positive in <4 years, and 85.7% positive in >4 years of the duration of pterygium with no statistical significance.

The aim of this study was to determine habitual visual acuity (HVA) in a large urban cohort in western India and identify factors associated with poor HVA.
This was a prospective study conducted over 10 days in September 2018 to assess the HVA in individuals attending a 10-day festival in Western India. Participants who volunteered to undergo vision screening and also filled the questionnaire form pertaining to demographic information including their age, gender, address, income, and educational status were included in this study. HVA was recorded with the distance correction that the participants were wearing when they attended the screening. The study evaluated the prevalence of visual acuity 6/6 or <6/6, 6/12, and 6/18 and the factors associated with lower visual acuity.
Of the 6300 participants, 1660 (26.3%) were females. Majority of the participants were from urban background (6084, 96.6%) and were of younger age group (18-40 years--3786, 60.1%; 41-60 years--2187, 34.7%; >60 years--327, 5.2%). HVA was recorded as 6/6 both eyes in 4136 (65.6%), at least 6/12 both eyes in 5691 (90.3%), and at least 6/18 both eyes in 5974 (94.8%) individuals. Only 11 patients (0.17%) had VA worse than 6/60 with only 3 patients (0.003%) having bilateral VA <6/60. Older age, female sex, lower education status, and low annual income were significant risk factors for poor HVA.

The aim of this study was to study the perception of residency trainers about an optimum residency program.
A survey, using a pre-validated questionnaire, was conducted by the Academic and Research Committee of the All India Ophthalmological Society, in 2019-20 with questions directed to teachers in medical colleges and national board of examination's ophthalmology residency programs on demography, teaching experience, imparting clinical and surgical skills, ideal academic schedule and dissertation in the post-graduate residency program.
The response rate in the survey was 47.6%. Valid responses were obtained from 309 residency trainers. Of these, 132 of 309 (42.7%) were females. The mean age was 45.3 ± 9.5 years, range 26-68 years. The trainers believed that on a scale of 0-10, clinical skills teaching should be taught, mean ± SD slit lamp 9.8 ± 0.7; indirect ophthalmoscopy 9.3 ± 1.3; gonioscopy 9.2 ± 1.5; perimetry 8.9 ± 1.5; OCT 8.4 ± 1.9; applanation tonometry 9.5 ± 1.2 and orthoptic evaluation 8.1 (±1.9). A resident should ideally perform independently surgeries (median, inter-quartile range IQR) SICS 50 (IQR 40-100); phaco 50 (20-60); pterygium excision 20 (10-40); DCR 10 (5-20); chalazion 20 (10-50), trabeculectomy 7 (5-15); strabismus 5 (2-10), LASIK and retinal detachment 0. Oxytetracycline (OTC), one of the largely used antibiotic in veterinary practice has been banned due to its potential side effects. Development of a field applicable and affordable kit to detect OTC will help to eliminate such milk from human consumption. An aptamer has been designed (27 nt; Kd = 29.2 ± 19.4 nM) through rational truncation. OTC interacts with this aptamer in G rich regions as confirmed by molecular modelling and circular dichroism spectroscopy. To develop a lateral flow based aptasensor, OTC was conjugated with a 7 kDa carrier protein to immobilize onto the nitrocellulose membrane. Using 0.125 µM aptamer-gold conjugate, assay could visually detects upto 5 ng/mL of OTC in spiked milk within 10 mins [Limit of quantitation (LOQ)-0.254 ± 1.62 ng/mL; permissible limit 100 ng/mL]. It showed no cross reactivity with components of milk and data correlated with analysis done through HPLC.This study investigated the effect of frozen storage periods (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks) of raw meat and stewing on the flavor of chicken broth. With the increased storage duration of frozen raw material, the contents of the free amino acids, nucleotides and mineral elements in the broth decreased significantly, especially within the first 4 weeks, and then increased significantly. Meanwhile, the volatile compounds showed the reverse trend. The results from the E-nose, E-tongue and sensory evaluation indicated a progressive difference in overall flavor profiles between the samples. The sensory scores of the meaty and fatty traits reached a maximum as raw chicken meat was stored for 4 weeks at -18 °C, which should be related to the increased contents of aldehydes and 2-pentyl furan. Overall, the limited storage duration of frozen raw meat can enhance the flavor of chicken broth.A two-color fluorescent DNA tweezers was developed for ultrasensitive detection of Ochratoxin A (OTA) based on hairpin-locked aptamer and hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplification strategy. OTA can bind with hairpin-locked aptamer and then trigger the HCR reaction to produce a long double-strand DNA. The side-chains of the long duplex can separately hybridize with the two locker sequences of DNA tweezer, causing the opening of DNA tweezer and the recovery of two-color fluorescent signals. It shows a good linear range from 0.02 to 0.8 ppb with limit of detection of 0.006 ppb for FAM and 0.014 ppb for Cy5, which is beyond the requirement of actual application. In addition, the two-color fluorescent strategy can greatly reduce the false positive rate. Intriguingly, settings that have been associated with ferroptosis are linked to placental physiology and trophoblast injury. Such circumstances include hypoxia-reperfusion during placental development, physiological uterine contractions or pathological changes in placental bed perfusion, the abundance of trophoblastic iron, evidence for lipotoxicity during the pathophysiology of major placental disorders such as preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and preterm birth, and reduced glutathione peroxidation capacity and lipid peroxidation repair during placental injury. We recently interrogated placental ferroptosis in placental dysfunction in human and mouse pregnancy, dissected its relevance to placental injury, and validated the role of glutathione peroxidase-4 in guarding placental trophoblasts against ferroptotic injury. We also uncovered a role for the phospholipase PLA2G6 (PNPLA9) in attenuating trophoblast ferroptosis. Here, we summarize current data on trophoblast ferroptosis, and the role of several proteins and microRNAs as regulators of this process. Recently, a variety of studies have investigated that small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) contribute to the communication between cancer cells, including the development of chemoresistance in ovarian cancer. The purpose of our study is to determine if sEVs-derived TIE-1 is involved in the chemoresistance of ovarian cancer cells.

Male breast cancer (MBC) accounts for 1% of all breast cancers and there is a paucity of data on factors impacting the treatment strategies and outcomes. We sought to use a large national database to examine trends and predictors of the use of adjuvant radiation (Adj-RT), as well as any association with outcome.
We queried the National Cancer Database (NCDB) for patients with stages I-III ****treated with surgery (breast conservation surgery-BCS or mastectomy-MS) within 180 days of diagnosis (years 2004-2015). Multivariable logistic regression identified predictors of adj-RT receipt. Multivariable Cox regression evaluated predictors of survival. Propensity matching for adj-RT was used to account for indication biases.
We identified 6,217 patients meeting the eligibility criteria (1457 BCS vs. 4760 MS). The majority of patients were Caucasian (85%) and in an age range of 50-80 years (74%). Although adj-RT was omitted for 30% of BCS patients, the utilization was higher compared to MS (OR=26, p-value=0.001).

An interplay between thrombo-inflammatory and atherogenic mechanisms is recognized in cardiovascular disease pathogenesis (CVD) in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Herein, we examine associations of growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), a pro-inflammatory cytokine identified as potent CVD risk biomarker in the general population, with subclinical atherosclerosis in APS.
We measured plasma GDF-15 levels by an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (cut-off 1200 pg/mL) and examined carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and the presence of carotid and femoral plaques using vascular ultrasound in 80 patients with APS (44 primary, 36 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)/APS) and 40 healthy controls. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive association between chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). We hypothesized that shared genetic risk factors between CLL and NMSC could contribute to the association observed between these diseases.
We examined the association between (i) established NMSC susceptibility loci and CLL risk in a meta-analysis including 3100 CLL cases and 7667 controls and (ii) established CLL loci and NMSC risk in a study of 4242 basal cell carcinoma (BCC) cases, 825 squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cases and 12802 controls. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) for CLL, ****and SCC were constructed using established loci. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Herein, we examine associations of growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), a pro-inflammatory cytokine identified as potent CVD risk biomarker in the general population, with subclinical atherosclerosis in APS. The approach is explored by analyzing MRF measurements of a phantom consisting of several tubes across which MR relaxation times are constant. The proposed uncertainty quantification is quantitatively consistent with the observed within-tube variability of estimated relaxation times. Furthermore, calculated uncertainties are shown to characterize well observed differences between the MRF estimates and the results obtained from high-accurate reference measurements. These findings indicate that a reliable uncertainty quantification is achieved. We also present results for simulated MRF data and an uncertainty quantification for an in vivo MRF measurement. In this regards, we have investigated such ASD driven phenomena in Ca2+doped bulk and polycrystalline La2-xCa x CoMnO6(0 ⩽x⩽ 1) series of samples. The structural and Raman studies provide evidence of an increase in the disorder due to the increment of Ca concentration in the parent compound (x= 0). The enhancement of disorder in the doped system induces various magnetic orderings, magnetic frustration and cluster glass-like behavior, which have been confirmed from AC and DC magnetic studies and neutron diffraction studies. As a result, significantly large exchange bias effects, namely zero-field cooled (spontaneous) and field-cooled (conventional) exchange bias, are found. Although ECG contains critical information, most models merely use it as a time reference. To take this one step further, we investigate the effect of its waveform on the performance.Approach.We extracted 27 commonly used physiological parameters in the literature. In addition, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were deployed to define deep-learned representations. We applied the CNNs to extract two different feature sets from the PPG segments alone and alongside corresponding ECG segments. Then, the extracted feature vectors and their combinations were fed into various regression models to evaluate our hypotheses.Main results.We performed our evaluations using data collected from 200 subjects. The results were analyzed by the mean difference t-test and graphical methods. Our results confirm that the ECG waveform contains important information and helps us to improve accuracy. The comparison of the physiological parameters and machine-learned features also reveals the superiority of machine-learned representations. First, diamond anvil cell pressure measurements up to 88 GPa were performed on explosively compressed A15 Nb3Si material to traceTcas a function of pressure.Tcis suppressed to ∼5.2 K at 88 GPa. Then, using theseTc(P) data for A15 Nb3Si, pressures up to 92 GPa were applied at room temperature (which increased to 120 GPa at 5 K) on tetragonal Nb3Si. Measurements of the resistivity gave no indication of any A15 structure production, i.e. no indications of the superconductivity characteristic of A15 Nb3Si. This is in contrast to the explosive compression (up toP∼ 110 GPa) of tetragonal Nb3Si, which produced 50%-70% A15 material,Tc= 18 K at ambient pressure, in a 1981 Los Alamos National Laboratory experiment. This implies that the accompanying high temperature (1000 °C) caused by explosive compression is necessary to successfully drive the reaction kinetics of the tetragonal → A15 Nb3Si structural transformation. Our theoretical calculations show that A15 Nb3Si has an enthalpy vs the tetragonal structure that is 70 meV atom-1smallerat 100 GPa, while at ambient pressure the tetragonal phase enthalpy is lower than that of the A15 phase by 90 meV atom-1. The aim of the controlled thermal severity (CTS) test was to check the influence of these substances on the HSLA steel weldability in the wet welding conditions. The visual test, metallographic tests, and hardness Vickers HV10 measurements were performed during investigations. The results proved that hydrophobic coatings can reduce the hardness of welded joints in the heat-affected zone by 40-50 HV10. Additionally, the number of cold cracks can be significantly reduced by application of waterproof coatings on the filler material. By further characterizing T-cell subpopulations, we identify that regulatory T-cells (Tregs) were the major contributor to this improved survival. Lastly, we assessed gene expression, specifically in the Treg population, and found that TNFRSF4 (Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor Superfamily Member 4) was differentially expressed in the core Treg subpopulation. Moreover, higher TNFRSF4 expression was associated with greater survival, suggesting that TNFRSF4 could play a key role in mechanisms underlying the contribution of Treg in HNSCC outcomes.

The presence of first-line indications for using ECT was significantly associated to shorter duration of MDE (9.1 vs 13.1 months, p less then 0.001) and lower number of lines of treatment before ECT (3.3 vs 4.1, p less then 0.001). LIMITATIONS This is a retrospective study and not all facilities practicing ECT participated that could limit the extrapolation of the results. CONCLUSION Compared to guidelines, ECT was not used as first-line strategy in clinical practice. The presence of first-line indications seemed to reduce the delay before ECT initiation. The improvements of knowledge and access of ECT are needed to decrease the gap between guidelines and clinical practice. To date, no study has examined the relationship between neurocognitive functioning and treatment for HD. We aim to determine the association between neurocognitive functioning and treatment outcomes, as well as the impact of HD-specific treatment on cognitive functioning. METHODS 323 individuals with HD were randomized to 20 weeks of peer- or clinician-led group behavioral treatment. 242 participants completed pre- and post-treatment neuropsychological testing covering eight neurocognitive domains. Rates of cognitive impairment (CI) were assessed for each neurocognitive domain. The association of baseline neurocognitive function on treatment response was examined using multiple regression. MANOVA and post-hoc tests were used to determine neurocognitive performance change pre- to post treatment. RESULTS Sixty-seven percent of participants had CI on ≥1 cognitive domain. There was no significant effect of pre-treatment neurocognitive functioning on treatment outcome. Post-treatment improvements were observed in visual memory, visual detection, decision making, information processing speed, visuospatial processing, attention/working memory (p≤.001). Declines in performance were found in visual reaction time and categorization. LIMITATIONS This was a non-inferiority trial to examine two treatment types with no normative comparison group. Treatment seeking individuals are more likely to be insightful, motivated, and have other features which limit generalizability. CONCLUSIONS Patterns of cognitive impairment in HD are similar to previous reports. Pre-treatment neurocognitive functioning did not impact treatment response. Neuropsychological functioning improved across multiple domains following targeted treatment. The current study examined the association between BDNF gene polymorphisms and ADHD in Chinese children. METHODS Participants were 195 medication-naive ADHD children and 263 unaffected healthy controls. ADHD symptoms were diagnosed using the Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Parental Rating Scale according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5. Five BDNF single nucleotide polymorphisms were detected using improved multiplex ligation detection reaction. Alleles and genotype frequency were examined using Chi-square tests. Correlations were examined using multivariate logistic regression analysis in the ADHD and control groups. RESULTS The results revealed that rs12291186 with one or both mutated allele(s) was significantly associated with reduced likelihood of ADHD (OR = 0.13, 95% CI 0.02-0.77) and ADHD-Combined (OR = 0.10, 95% CI 0.01-0.85). METHODS The prevalence of antidepressant prescriptions between 180 days before pregnancy onset and 180 days postpartum was evaluated using a large administrative database. The dates of pregnancy onset and delivery were estimated using developed algorithms. RESULTS Of 33,941 women, at least one antidepressant was prescribed to 451 (133/10,000 deliveries) between 180 days before pregnancy and 180 days postpartum and to 241 (71/10,000 deliveries) during pregnancy. The prevalence of antidepressant prescriptions decreased during the first and second trimesters and increased in the postpartum period. Of 339 women with antidepressant prescriptions before pregnancy, 151 (44.5%) discontinued it during pregnancy. Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors were the most frequently prescribed class of antidepressants in the time period studied (356 women, 105/10,000 deliveries), followed by tricyclic/non-tricyclic antidepressants (101 women, 30/10,000 deliveries). Of the 57 women who had at least one record of paroxetine prescription in the first trimester, 13 (22.8%) were prescribed >25 mg/day. Fifty-seven women (17/10,000 deliveries) were concurrently prescribed two or more classes of antidepressants between 180 days before pregnancy and 180 days postpartum. LIMITATIONS It may not always have been the case that the prescribed antidepressants were used. Women whose pregnancy ended in an abortion or stillbirth were not included. CONCLUSIONS Various antidepressants were prescribed to prenatal and postpartum women in Japan. Approximately half of pregnant women discontinued treatment with antidepressants after becoming pregnant. Women of childbearing age should select an appropriate antidepressant considering the risk/benefit profile.

The dissociation cross section with the constant fMS is typically larger than with the variable fMS, especially for the low vibrational energy states. On the other hand, the cross sections resulting from the rotationally averaged database are found to underpredict the dissociation rate coefficient at low temperatures. In the rovibrational heating case, the rv-STS predicts faster relaxation than the v-STS, which also shows a lower quasi-steady-state temperature than v-STS. A recent time-resolved vibrational sum frequency generation (TR-VSFG) spectroscopy experiment revealed that the relaxation time scales of free OH at the surface of pure water and isotopically diluted water are very similar to each other. In the present study, the dynamics of free OH excited at the surface of pure water and deuterated water are examined with an NE-AIMD simulation, which reproduces the experimentally observed features. The relaxation paths are examined by introducing constraints for the bonds and angles of water molecules relevant to specific vibrational modes in NE-AIMD simulations. In the case of free OH relaxation at the pure water surface, stretching vibrational coupling with the conjugate bond makes a significant contribution to the relaxation path. In the case of the isotopically diluted water surface, the bend (HOD)-stretching (OD) combination band couples with the free OH vibration, generating a relaxation rate similar to that in the pure water case. We show that SSAIMS can accurately reproduce the AIMS results for the three molecules considered at a **** cheaper computational cost, often close to that of TSH. Two available cross section databases by Andrienko/Boyd and Esposito/Capitelli are employed for the rovibrationally resolved model (rv-STS) and vibrationally resolved model (v-STS), respectively. The difference between rv-STS and v-STS comes from two contributions the multisurface factor of dissociation (fMS) and the rotational averaging process. The dissociation cross section with the constant fMS is typically larger than with the variable fMS, especially for the low vibrational energy states. On the other hand, the cross sections resulting from the rotationally averaged database are found to underpredict the dissociation rate coefficient at low temperatures. In the rovibrational heating case, the rv-STS predicts faster relaxation than the v-STS, which also shows a lower quasi-steady-state temperature than v-STS. In the present study, the dynamics of free OH excited at the surface of pure water and deuterated water are examined with an NE-AIMD simulation, which reproduces the experimentally observed features. The relaxation paths are examined by introducing constraints for the bonds and angles of water molecules relevant to specific vibrational modes in NE-AIMD simulations. In the case of free OH relaxation at the pure water surface, stretching vibrational coupling with the conjugate bond makes a significant contribution to the relaxation path. In the case of the isotopically diluted water surface, the bend (HOD)-stretching (OD) combination band couples with the free OH vibration, generating a relaxation rate similar to that in the pure water case. We show that SSAIMS can accurately reproduce the AIMS results for the three molecules considered at a much cheaper computational cost, often close to that of TSH. The genotoxicity of cisplatin (CP) as a platinum-based antineoplastic agent due to its oxidative stress induction was well known. In this research, we examined 4-hydroxychalcone (4-HCH) as a natural food that presents flavonoid effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and CP-induced
genotoxicity.
Cytotoxicity of CP and 4-HCH was measured on human embryonic kidney 293 cells with MTT assay. Then, intracellular ROS content at IC50 concentration of CP was measured with 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) dye. Finally, 4-HCH was administered intraperitoneally at 10 and 40mg/kg/BW doses as a pre and post-treatment schedule in a **** model of CP genotoxicity (7mg/kg). Acridine-orange-stained bone marrow cells were quantified for micronucleus presence examination.
The calculated IC50 of CP and 4-HCH were reported around 19.4 and 133.6μM, respectively, on HEK293 cells. Also, it was observed that 4-HCH at 0.2, 2 and 10μM concentrations did not show obvious cytotoxicity. The fluorimetry confirmed that pre-treatment with 10μM and co-treatment with 2μM of 4-HCH could attenuate the CP-induced ROS production (
<0.05 and

Samples of blood and hepatic tissue were collected at the end of the seventh day of exposure and treatment with melatonin. Body weight, hematological parameters, and histopathological, biochemical analyses and determination of oxidative stress levels in liver were evaluated. Body weight was compromised (P less then 0.01). Alterations of hematologic parameters were significant when compared to control (P less then 0.001). Biochemically, serum levels of albumin decreased (P less then 0.001), but serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase increased (P less then 0.001). Histopathology revealed necrotic hepatocytes, portal and central-lobular inflammatory infiltrate, congestion of capillaries. Serum levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were found to be significantly elevated (P less then 0.05; P less then 0.001), and serum level of reduced glutathione was significantly lower (P less then 0.05; P less then 0.001). An overweight 64-year-old woman was admitted for severe abdominal pain, dysphagia and fever 2 weeks after a Nissen fundoplication. She had pneumoperitoneum on scanner. At laparoscopy, we found a generalized peritonitis secondary to a perforated Nissen wrap in the presence of a gastric greater curvature plication. Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy can be irrelevant in case of moderately and severely obese patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Four studies have investigated the risks and rewards of the LNFGP as an alternative. Only one case of leakage has been reported. We present another severe complication the pylorus stenosis caused by a plication performed too close to the pylorus, causing gastric dilatation in the presence of the wrap, leading to wrap perforation.Renal injury after surgical intervention is not uncommon in current urological practice with most complication would be anticipated in high risk patient. Subcapsular renal hematoma is not known complication post some urological interventions such as extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and trauma. Medical records were retrospectively searched for dogs whom CSF was sampled from 2012-2019. Data collected included signalment, body weight, site of collection of the CSF, CSF analysis results, and final diagnosis.
A total of 497 dogs met the inclusion criteria. ACD was identified in 16.5% (82/497) of dogs. The diseases with higher proportion of ACD were cranial nerve neuropathy (6/10; 60.0%), brain tumour (10/24; 41.7%), idiopathic vestibular disease (7/17; 41.2%) and brain vascular disease (4/13; 30.8%).

Employability has been defined within the veterinary context as a set of personal and professional capabilities that enable a veterinarian to gain employment, contribute meaningfully to the profession, and develop a career pathway that achieves satisfaction and success. This study explicitly addressed the construct of veterinary employability by exploring the perceptions of multiple stakeholders (recent graduates, employee veterinarians, veterinarian and non-veterinarian employers, para-veterinary staff, academics and policy makers).
A four-part online survey was distributed internationally via various agencies. Free-text responses, ratings of capabilities and rankings of categories were analysed.
The congruence of stakeholder responses was notable, regardless of age and geographical location, with minor differences noted in academics' and para-veterinary staff responses, and gender. The most important capabilities were honesty, ethical behaviour, communicating effectively and collaboratively with clients, knowing when to ask for help, and the willingness to learn. The categories of communication and teamwork ranked highest.
This study adds granularity to the existing evidence for the importance of communication and teamwork. The relationship between the veterinarian (self) and their work, enabled by engagement, meaning and purpose, and respect for their profession was a key finding, and illustrative of how to achieve personal satisfaction and well-being within the profession.

We aimed to identify prognostic markers and their discriminant score in predicting the lethal outcome of canine Babesia gibsoni.
Blood samples were collected from 108 client-owned dogs with clinical signs commensurate with babesiosis to analyze haematological, biochemical, haemostatic, antioxidant profile and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels. Samples were screened for Babesia infection (microscopic and molecular techniques). Babesiosis-affected dogs were classified into survivors and non-survivors, and 30 healthy dogs were used in the control group.
Haemoglobin, thrombocytes, catalase, urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, lactate and reticulocytes were highly correlated to survival. Receiver operating characteristics analysis revealed urea, ALT and lactate as specific prognostic markers for the disease. The formula for calculation of discriminant scores (Di) for lethal outcome of the disease was generated with cut-off score 0.141. The scoring system was 79% sensitive and 83% specific in predicting the lethal outcome of the disease.
A scoring system developed from the prognosticating markers may aid in predicting the outcome of Babesia gibsoni infection on the day of presentation itself enabling intensive care for those animals with a cut-off score more than 0.141.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological tolerance of medical cyanoacrylate adhesives (CAs), butyl-CA and octyl-CA, applied by two different methods in surgical skin incisions of T. scripta.
A two-trial controlled blind study each one including 12 female adult T. scripta turtles. Two 1-cm long full-thickness surgical skin incisions were made on the dorsal aspect of each hind limb. In trial 1 CAs were applied superficially over the apposed wound edges; each animal's four wounds were closed using butyl-CA, octyl-CA and ethyl-CA or absorbable suture as controls. In trial 2 adhesives were applied holding wound edges everted, and octyl-CA was replaced by a non-sutured control wound. At each time point (2, 7, 14 and 21 days) all wounds from three randomly chosen animals were biopsied.
Medical grade CAs did not induce any sign of tissue damage and/or inflammatory reaction attributable to histotoxicity independently of the method of application. Wound dehiscence rate was higher when CAs were applied superficially over the apposed wound edges.

Haemoglobin, thrombocytes, catalase, urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, lactate and reticulocytes were highly correlated to survival. Receiver operating characteristics analysis revealed urea, ALT and lactate as specific prognostic markers for the disease. The formula for calculation of discriminant scores (Di) for lethal outcome of the disease was generated with cut-off score 0.141. The scoring system was 79% sensitive and 83% specific in predicting the lethal outcome of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological tolerance of medical cyanoacrylate adhesives (CAs), butyl-CA and octyl-CA, applied by two different methods in surgical skin incisions of T. scripta. A two-trial controlled blind study each one including 12 female adult T. scripta turtles. Two 1-cm long full-thickness surgical skin incisions were made on the dorsal aspect of each hind limb. In trial 1 CAs were applied superficially over the apposed wound edges; each animal's four wounds were closed using butyl-CA, octyl-CA and ethyl-CA or absorbable suture as controls. In trial 2 adhesives were applied holding wound edges everted, and octyl-CA was replaced by a non-sutured control wound. At each time point (2, 7, 14 and 21 days) all wounds from three randomly chosen animals were biopsied. Medical grade CAs did not induce any sign of tissue damage and/or inflammatory reaction attributable to histotoxicity independently of the method of application.
