Purpose To evaluate macular thickness fluctuations in patients with retinal vein occlusions (RVO) treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents, and to assess whether patients with larger fluctuations have poorer visual outcomes. Materials and methods Notches were surgically prepared in the root surface at the bone crest level of the first premolars of mongrel dogs. After 37 days, extrusion of the first lower and upper premolars was randomly performed by 3 different methods conventional orthodontic extrusion (OE); open flap debridement performed immediately before orthodontic extrusion (OF); and orthodontic extrusion associated with weekly fiberotomy and scaling (FS). For all groups, extrusion was performed for 21 days followed by one-month retention and sacrifice. Periodontal parameters, descriptive histology, and histomorphometric analyses were performed at the end of the experimental period. Results The median extrusion was 2.25 in the fiberotomy group, 2.0 mm in the open flap group and 1.0 mm in the orthodontic extrusion group with no significant differences between groups. The highest distance between reference notch and bone crest was observed in the fiberotomy group (p less then 0.05). Histologically, radicular resorption repaired with cellular cementum was detected in all groups. Conclusions Tooth extrusion was successfully achieved with all of the different methods of orthodontic tooth extrusion with no statistical significance between techniques. The fiberotomy approach was effective in avoiding coronal displacement of periodontal tissues. Fiberotomy associated with scaling should be indicated if the objective of the treatment is extrusion without periodontal tissue displacement.Objectives To investigate the underlying mechanism between diabetic periodontitis and NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome associated pyroptosis. Design Experimental models of diabetes-associated periodontitis were implemented in db/db ****. We detected NLRP3 inflammasome related cytokines and gasdermin D (GSDMD) both in vitro and in vivo. We performed bioinformatics predictions based on microarray analysis using bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs). Results Diabetes-associated periodontitis **** exhibited the worst fasting glucose and alveolar bone destruction. GSDMD positive cells and NLRP3 inflammasome expression were augmented in gingival tissue, which were partly reversed by metformin. In vitro data suggested NLRP3 inflammasomes stimuli induced cell pyroptotic death and deletion of NLRP3 decreased GSDMD expression. We found a profile of differential lncRNAs expression and three co-expressed lncRNAs of nlrp3 and gsdmd in BMDMs. Conclusions Our data show that NLRP3 mediated pyroptosis has a significant role in diabetes-associated periodontitis. The pyroptotic cell death may be the pivot reason of the deteriorated inflammation in this disease, which is ameliorated by metformin treatment. The reported prevalence of digestive symptoms ranges from 3% to 79%, depending on the setting,2-5 but data on GI endoscopic and histologic findings in COVID-19 patients are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the GI endoscopic and histologic findings in COVID-19 patients.Clonal plants can share information and resources among connected ramets (asexual individuals). Such clonal integration can promote ramet growth, which may further influence soil microbial communities in the rooting zone. Crude oil contamination can negatively affect plant growth and alter soil microbial community composition. However, we still know little about how clonal integration affects soil microbial communities, especially under crude oil contamination. In a coastal wetland, ramets of the rhizomatous plant Phragmites australis in circular plots (60 cm in diameter) were subjected to 0, 5 and 10 mm depth of crude oil, and the rhizomes at the edge of the plots were either severed (preventing clonal integration) or left intact (allowing clonal integration). After three years of treatment, we analysed in each plot soil physiochemical properties and soil microbial community composition. The alpha-diversity of the soil microbial communities did not differ between intact and severed plots, but was overall lower in 10-mm than in 0-mm and 5-mm oil plots. Considering all three oil treatments together, soil microbial community dissimilarity (beta-diversity) was positively correlated with soil property distance in both severed and intact plots. Considering the three oil treatments separately, this pattern was also observed in 10-mm oil plots, but not in 0-mm or 5-mm oil plots. Background Worldwide, there is an increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Metformin is still the recommended first-line glucose-lowering drug for people with T2DM. Despite this, the effects of metformin on patient-important outcomes are still not clarified. Objectives To assess the effects of metformin monotherapy in adults with T2DM. Search methods We based our search on a systematic report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and topped-up the search in CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, WHO ICTRP, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Additionally, we searched the reference lists of included trials and systematic reviews, as well as health technology assessment reports and medical agencies. The date of the last search for all databases was 2 December 2019, except Embase (searched up 28 April 2017). Selection criteria We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with at least one year's duration comparing metformin monotherapy with no intervention, behaviour changing interventions or other glucre not reported. One trial compared metformin with meglitinide and two trials compared metformin with no intervention. No deaths or SAEs occurred (very low-certainty evidence) no other patient-important outcomes were reported. No trial compared metformin with placebo or a behaviour changing interventions. Four ongoing trials with 5824 participants are likely to report one or more of our outcomes of interest and are estimated to be completed between 2018 and 2024. Furthermore, 24 trials with 2369 participants are awaiting assessment. Authors' conclusions There is no clear evidence whether metformin monotherapy compared with no intervention, behaviour changing interventions or other glucose-lowering drugs influences patient-important outcomes.Sortases are a group of enzymes displayed on the cell-wall of Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we investigated the effects of NPFF-NPFFR2 on expression of syncytial [human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) β] and fusogenic [syncytin 1, syncytin 2, and glial cells missing 1 (GCM1)] genes in first trimester primary human cytotrophoblast cells. By analyzing two publicly available microarray data sets, we found that NPFF is consistently expressed throughout gestation whereas NPFFR2 increases in first trimester and is elevated in placenta samples from women with preeclampsia. Immunohistochemistry showed that NPFFR2, syncytin 1/2, and GCM1 each displayed unique patterns of expression among different trophoblast populations in first trimester placenta. Treatment of primary human cytotrophoblast cells with NPFF increased the mRNA and protein levels of hCG β, syncytin 1, syncytin 2, and GCM1; and knockdown of NPFFR2 abolished these effects. Interestingly, GCM1 mediated NPFF-induced upregulation of syncytin 1 and syncytin 2, but not hCG β, in primary human cytotrophoblasts. Our results demonstrate that NPFF acts via NPFFR2 to enhance production of hCG β and promote GCM1-dependent expression of syncytin 1 and 2 in human cytotrophoblasts.

This article reviews the conceptual foundations and risk factors related to preadolescent depression and the rationale for focusing on improving preadolescents' interpersonal relationships to decrease depressive symptoms and risk for depression during adolescence. The structure and goals for the initial, middle, and termination phases of FB-IPT are described, as well as the specific communication and problem-solving strategies presented to preadolescents and parents. Last, research on the efficacy of FB-IPT is summarized, as are future directions for implementing this promising psychosocial intervention for preadolescent depression in community settings.The digital age poses new challenges for psychotherapy. The authors use the IPT framework to explore how therapists can discuss, during in-person sessions, the impact of technology on communication and relationships. The authors describe how therapists can preserve IPT's overarching goal of resolving interpersonal problems by adapting specific techniques to meet the needs of patients who routinely rely on technology to connect with others. Case vignettes illustrate techniques used to evaluate and modify technology-based communication, including problematic text-based interactions. Interpersonal theory proposes that difficult relationships lead to negative affect, thereby promoting emotional eating, which has been linked to and predictive of disordered eating. This study underscores the potential distinct biology of cCH as well as the significant unmet need for safe, effective, and well-tolerated preventive treatment. Family-based interpersonal psychotherapy (FB-IPT) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention for depression in preadolescents (ages 8-12 years). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/iberdomide.html Adapted from interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescents with depression and modified for younger children, this therapy includes structured dyadic sessions with preadolescents and their parents, guidance for parents in supporting their children and decreasing negative parent-child interactions, and a focus on preadolescents' comorbid anxiety and peer relationships. This article reviews the conceptual foundations and risk factors related to preadolescent depression and the rationale for focusing on improving preadolescents' interpersonal relationships to decrease depressive symptoms and risk for depression during adolescence. The structure and goals for the initial, middle, and termination phases of FB-IPT are described, as well as the specific communication and problem-solving strategies presented to preadolescents and parents. Results Of the GHCS subscales, Effective Team Leadership and Alignment of Staff with Organizational Values significantly predicted residents' engagement in activities. Supporting Well-Being significantly predicted residents' community involvement. None of the GHCS subscales significantly predicted domestic participation and choice making. Conclusions The findings suggest that strategies to improve Effective Team Leadership and Supporting Well-Being dimensions of culture may contribute to enhancing certain QOL outcomes.Background The coronavirus disease 2019 is currently of global concern. Objective To evaluate the feasibility of routine colorectal surgery during coronavirus disease 2019 and to offer some Chinese recommendations to colorectal surgeons throughout the world. Methods A total of 166 patients receiving colorectal surgery from 20th December 2019 to 20th March 2020 at Department of General Surgery in Chinese General Hospital of People's Liberation Army were enrolled, and further divided into two groups based on before or after admission date of 20th January 2020. Clinicopathologic data such as hospital stay and economic data such as total costs were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Results Longer hospital stay, higher proportion of non-local patients and more hospitalization cost were found in the post-20 January group (special-time group) (P less then 0.001; P less then 0.05; P less then 0.05 respectively). Apart from this, no difference existed with regard to baseline demographical data such as age, sex and height, as well as clinicopathological data such as previous history, surgery time, operation extent and TNM staging. Conclusions This real-world study indicated that performing colorectal surgery during coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic might be safe and feasible based on comprehensive screening and investigation. One potential method utilizing these crystal structures is the Molecular Mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM/PBSA) method of predicting relative binding free energies. However, MM/PBSA performance is sensitive to various simulation parameters and often requires optimization for the system of interest. In this study, we evaluated the effects of various simulation parameters, namely simulation length, choice of dielectric constant, inclusion of explicit water molecules, and inclusion of entropy, on the ability of MM/PBSA to predict the experimental binding free energies of a set of known CB1 agonists and antagonists. MM/PBSA produced r values ranging from 0.410 to 0.688 for the CB1 agonists and 0.420 to 0.678 for the CB1 antagonists depending on the simulation parameters, which were modestly better than correlations obtained using docking scores. Using fewer replicates with a longer simulation length and a higher solute dielectric constant value had the largest positive effect on performance. Including explicit water molecules at the protein-ligand interface had a minor positive effect on performance at higher dielectric constant values, while the inclusion of entropy had a detrimental effect across most of the data set.Objective To date, no study has explored patients' experiences, outcome expectations and satisfaction 1-year post-total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using focus-group discussion (FGD). The exploration of patients' expectations, functional recovery and limitations may support future modifications and thus improve outcomes post-TKA. Methods An FGD was conducted with patients at 1-year post-TKA. Moderators led the discussion using a semistructured discussion guide. The discussion was digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed to formulate themes. Results The study identified four main themes recovery experience post-TKA, experience before TKA, activity of daily living (ADL) changes post-TKA and post-TKA outcome expectations. The recovery experience theme explores the overall experience post-TKA in terms of symptoms and progression issues; their experience with the orthopaedic surgeon and physiotherapy; and the differences between first and second knee replacements. The experience before TKA theme discusses many issues raised by patients that they believed strongly affected TKA outcomes and their satisfaction, such as the referral process, ADL limitations before TKA and their beliefs about post-TKA outcomes. The ADL changes post-TKA theme discusses the diversity of functional improvements, limitations and new functional ability. The outcome expectation theme explores what the patients expected to gain from surgery and the factors that modified those expectations, and whether their expectations were met. Conclusions Patient attitude, sufficient preoperative education, outcome expectation modification, communication with the surgeon and patients taking an active role in rehabilitation can all affect post-TKA outcomes and satisfaction. Hence, the recommendation is to address all of these issues before TKA to enhance outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Sulfate was added at different concentrations (0, 3, 20 mM), and the slurries were incubated at 10 °C and 25 °C. During butyrate conversion, sulfate reduction and methanogenesis occurred simultaneously. The syntrophic butyrate degrader Syntrophomonas was enriched both in sulfate-amended and in sulfate-free slurries, indicating the occurrence of syntrophic conversions at both conditions. Archaeal community analysis revealed a dominance of Methanomicrobiaceae. The acetoclastic Methanosaetaceae reached high relative abundance in the absence of sulfate, while presence of acetoclastic Methanosarcinaceae was independent of the sulfate concentration, temperature, and the initial zone of the sediment. Indeed, Pgp effluxes doxorubicin and impairs the immunesensitizing functions of calreticulin (CRT), an "eat-me" signal mediating ICD. It is unknown if classical Pgp inhibitors, designed to reverse chemoresistance, may restore ICD. We addressed this question by using Pgp-expressing cancer cells, treated with Tariquidar, a clinically approved Pgp inhibitor, and R-3 compound, a N,N-bis(alkanol)amine aryl ester derivative with the same potency of Tariquidar as Pgp inhibitor. In Pgp-expressing/doxorubicin-resistant cells, Tariquidar and R-3 increased doxorubicin accumulation and toxicity, reduced Pgp activity, and increased CRT translocation and ATP and HMGB1 release. Unexpectedly, only R-3 promoted phagocytosis by dendritic cells and activation of antitumor CD8+T-lymphocytes. Although Tariquidar did not alter the amount of Pgp present on cell surface, R-3 promoted Pgp internalization and ubiquitination, disrupting its interaction with CRT. Pgp knock-out restores doxorubicin-induced ICD in MDA-MB-231/DX cells that recapitulated the phenotype of R-3-treated cells. Multi-level interventions of child-, parent-, and center-level strategies were conducted for 12 weeks. Children's healthy lifestyle behaviors and obesity status were assessed as daily recommended levels and body mass index ≥85th percentile, respectively. Results Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed significant improvements in total composite scores of healthy-lifestyle behaviors-including 60-min of moderate physical activity-but not in obesity status among children. Sulfate was added at different concentrations (0, 3, 20 mM), and the slurries were incubated at 10 °C and 25 °C. During butyrate conversion, sulfate reduction and methanogenesis occurred simultaneously. The syntrophic butyrate degrader Syntrophomonas was enriched both in sulfate-amended and in sulfate-free slurries, indicating the occurrence of syntrophic conversions at both conditions. Archaeal community analysis revealed a dominance of Methanomicrobiaceae. The acetoclastic Methanosaetaceae reached high relative abundance in the absence of sulfate, while presence of acetoclastic Methanosarcinaceae was independent of the sulfate concentration, temperature, and the initial zone of the sediment. This study shows that there is no vertical separation of sulfate reducers, syntrophs, and methanogens in the sediment and that they all participate in the conversion of butyrate.Doxorubicin is a strong inducer of immunogenic cell death (ICD), but it is ineffective in P-glycoprotein (Pgp)-expressing cells. Indeed, Pgp effluxes doxorubicin and impairs the immunesensitizing functions of calreticulin (CRT), an "eat-me" signal mediating ICD. It is unknown if classical Pgp inhibitors, designed to reverse chemoresistance, may restore ICD. We addressed this question by using Pgp-expressing cancer cells, treated with Tariquidar, a clinically approved Pgp inhibitor, and R-3 compound, a N,N-bis(alkanol)amine aryl ester derivative with the same potency of Tariquidar as Pgp inhibitor. In Pgp-expressing/doxorubicin-resistant cells, Tariquidar and R-3 increased doxorubicin accumulation and toxicity, reduced Pgp activity, and increased CRT translocation and ATP and HMGB1 release. Unexpectedly, only R-3 promoted phagocytosis by dendritic cells and activation of antitumor CD8+T-lymphocytes. Although Tariquidar did not alter the amount of Pgp present on cell surface, R-3 promoted Pgp internalization and ubiquitination, disrupting its interaction with CRT. Pgp knock-out restores doxorubicin-induced ICD in MDA-MB-231/DX cells that recapitulated the phenotype of R-3-treated cells. Our work demonstrates that plasma membrane-associated Pgp prevents a complete ICD notwithstanding the release of ATP and HMGB1, and the exposure of CRT. Wear measurements were carried out without (air) and with lubricant (distilled water, natural, and artificial lubricant), and antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The results highlighted that the presence of CNF is important in the nanocomposite formulation because it reduces the wear rate and prevents oxidative degradation during its processing. An amount of 1.0 wt % of CNF is best because it reaches the optimal distribution within the polymeric matrix, resulting in the best wear resistant, bio-active, and anti-bacterial nanocomposite among all investigated samples.Background We aimed to examine whether the Healthy Children, Healthy Families, and Healthy Communities Program, consisting of multi-level strategies for obesity prevention tailoring the context of socioeconomically vulnerable children based on an ecological perspective, would be effective on improving their healthy lifestyle behaviors and obesity status. Methods Participants were 104 children (and 59 parents) enrolled in public welfare systems in Seoul, South Korea. Based on a cluster-randomized controlled trial (no. ISRCTN11347525), eight centers were randomly assigned to intervention (four centers, 49 children, 27 parents) versus control groups (four centers, 55 children, 32 parents). Multi-level interventions of child-, parent-, and center-level strategies were conducted for 12 weeks. Children's healthy lifestyle behaviors and obesity status were assessed as daily recommended levels and body mass index ≥85th percentile, respectively. Parents' parenting behaviors were measured by the Family Nutrition and Physical Activity scale. Results Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed significant improvements in total composite scores of healthy-lifestyle behaviors-including 60-min of moderate physical activity-but not in obesity status among children. Moreover, the intervention group showed significant improvements in parenting behaviors among parents. ID was defined as ferritin less then 100 ng/mL or transferrin saturation less then 20%. Submaximal exercise capacity, measured by the 6-min walking test (6MWT), and QoL, assessed by the Minnesotta Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ), were compared between iron deficient patients and patients with normal iron status. A total of 447 HFpEF patients were included in the present cross-sectional study, and ID prevalence was 73%. Before evaluating their hematobiochemical and carcass characteristics, the birds were provided with grower mash ad libitum throughout the experimental period. Blood samples were taken from each genotypic group (nanaff, Nanaff, and NanaFf), when the birds were 18 and 20 wk old, respectively, for the evaluation of hematobiochemical parameters. At the end of the trial, 15 chickens from each of the 3 genotypic groups were randomly selected and slaughtered to determine the carcass parameters. The findings from the study revealed that except for total cholesterol, spleen, and neck weight, there was no significant genotypic effect (P > 0.05) on hematobiochemical and carcass parameters measured. The nanaff genotype birds had significantly higher (P 0.05). Also, hematobiochemical assays of all the birds were within normal range. From a health point of view, the indigenous naked neck genotype seems superior because its fat and cholesterol contents were low. Thus, it is strongly recommended that there should be a conscious effort to develop and commercialize the naked-neck and frizzled birds especially in developing countries. The experimental treatments with a 2 × 2 factorial design received a 2 wheat-corn-soybean diet a moderately low energy density diet with 2,650 kcal ME/kg (M-LED) and a low energy density diet based on the M-LED diet with 2,550 kcal ME/kg (LED), each diet without and with probiotic supplementation (M-LED, LED, M-LEDp, and LEDp, respectively). Reduced dietary energy levels had a particularly negative effect on egg weight (61.7 vs. 63.3 g; -2.6%, P less then 0.001), egg mass output (1.67 vs. 1.71 kg; -2.4%, P = 0.015), and FCR (2.01 vs. 1.97 kg feed/kg egg; +2%, P = 0.028). In hens administered the LED diet, deteriorated productive performance was accompanied by greater body weight loss (P less then 0.001) and reduced abdominal fat content (P less then 0.033) as compared with the M-LED group. Dietary probiotic inclusion increased egg weight (P = 0.015), including relative eggshell weight (P = 0.008) and eggshell thickness (P = 0.002) and significantly improved FCR (P = 0.010). Furthermore, some possible applications and performance data are summarized based on Packet Loss Rate (PLR), secrecy, survivability and other parameters. The different states of art methods proposed by several authors are compared with Coded Packet Transport (CPT) scheme. Since cyclodextrins act as host molecules for aromatic compounds, complex formations can be performed in carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resins, between the carbon fiber surface and the aromatic compounds of the surrounding plastic. This interface design leads to improved adhesion between fiber and plastic. An increase of the interfacial shear strength from 12 MPa to 38 MPa was detected. It was possible to increase the interfacial shear strength even further, to 41 MPa, through a prior complex formation with one of the plastics components. In the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, various bridges are damaged by the earthquake. Among the components of the bridge, steel bearings are the most damaged part of the bridge, which affects the functionality of the entire bridge. Since the 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake, several studies about the ultimate state of steel bearing during earthquake carried out. However, there are a few studies on analyzing the failure processes and ultimate state of steel bearing when various loads assumed at the time of the earthquake. Therefore, the study investigates the failure process and ultimate state of pin bearing and pin-roller bearing under combined load using static push-over analysis. First, the bridge axis and perpendicular bridge axis horizontal loading directions proposed depending on the actual earthquake directional behavior of the bridge. Then the analysis of each bearing conducted and clarified the failure process of each bearing that leads to failure based on the von mises stress yield criteria. Three-dimensional finite element method used to analyze the bearings. The analysis result found that set bolt and pin neck tensile failure were the probable failure mode of pin bearing, and failure mode of pin-roller bearing depends on vertical and horizontal loading direction. In the future, the result used to propose a new seismic resistance design and reinforcement method of bearings that satisfies the required performance. © 2020 The Author(s).The study of the fiber-matrix interface represents a crucial topic to determine the mechanical performance of geopolymer-based materials reinforced with polypropylene fibers (PPF). This research proposes the use of natural zeolite in the preparation geopolymers mortars through alkaline activation with NaOH, Ca(OH)2 and Na2SiO3, and with river sand as a fine aggregate. PPF were incorporated into the geopolymer-based mortar matrix in different proportions like 0, 0.5, and 1 wt.%. The mortars were cured for 24 h at 60 °C and then aged for six days more at room temperature. All samples analyzed through compressive strength were also characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The results indicated that the best mix design among the ones used NaOH (10 M), Na2SiO3/NaOH = 3, Ca(OH)2 = 1.5 wt.% and PPF = 0.5 wt.%. The optimum mix design showed a compressive strength of 4.63 MPa on average. Besides, the fibers enhanced the compressive strength of those samples which the PP fibers probably have better dispersion inside the matrix of the geopolymer mortar. © 2020 The Authors.The search for alternative food sources especially protein to meet the nutritional demand of the projected 9 billion world population by 2050 is now critical. Edible insect is an alternative source of protein in many African and Asian cuisines where beef, pork and chicken are perceived to be relatively expensive. The current study evaluates Mulberry Silkworm Pupae (MSP) and African Palm Weevil larvae (APW) as substitute to the mainstream proteins in snacks fillings, and also assessing the consumer acceptability of the new products. The chemical composition showed that MSP is higher in protein and soluble fibre contents while APW is higher in crude fat, crude fibre, zinc, manganese and calcium contents. The cooked edible insects were rich in both essential and non-essential amino acids. When used as fillings for snacks, the protein content of the snacks produced with APW and MSP compared favourably well with the snacks produced with beef fillings. The fat contents of the snacks were 18 % lower than those of snacks made with beef fillings. This research proposes the use of natural zeolite in the preparation geopolymers mortars through alkaline activation with NaOH, Ca(OH)2 and Na2SiO3, and with river sand as a fine aggregate. PPF were incorporated into the geopolymer-based mortar matrix in different proportions like 0, 0.5, and 1 wt.%. The mortars were cured for 24 h at 60 °C and then aged for six days more at room temperature. All samples analyzed through compressive strength were also characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The results indicated that the best mix design among the ones used NaOH (10 M), Na2SiO3/NaOH = 3, Ca(OH)2 = 1.5 wt.% and PPF = 0.5 wt.%. The optimum mix design showed a compressive strength of 4.63 MPa on average. Besides, the fibers enhanced the compressive strength of those samples which the PP fibers probably have better dispersion inside the matrix of the geopolymer mortar. © 2020 The Authors.The search for alternative food sources especially protein to meet the nutritional demand of the projected 9 billion world population by 2050 is now critical. Edible insect is an alternative source of protein in many African and Asian cuisines where beef, pork and chicken are perceived to be relatively expensive. The current study evaluates Mulberry Silkworm Pupae (MSP) and African Palm Weevil larvae (APW) as substitute to the mainstream proteins in snacks fillings, and also assessing the consumer acceptability of the new products. The chemical composition showed that MSP is higher in protein and soluble fibre contents while APW is higher in crude fat, crude fibre, zinc, manganese and calcium contents. The cooked edible insects were rich in both essential and non-essential amino acids. When used as fillings for snacks, the protein content of the snacks produced with APW and MSP compared favourably well with the snacks produced with beef fillings. The fat contents of the snacks were 18 % lower than those of snacks made with beef fillings. They possess a common fold hallmarked by three α-helices that surround a covalently attached heme. An intriguing feature of many monoheme c-type cytochromes is their capacity to form oligomers by exchanging at least one of their α-helices, which is often referred to as 3D domain swapping. Here, the crystal structure of NirC, a c-type cytochrome co-encoded with other proteins involved in nitrite reduction by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, has been determined. The crystals diffracted anisotropically to a maximum resolution of 2.12 Å (spherical resolution of 2.83 Å) and initial phases were obtained by Fe-SAD phasing, revealing the presence of 11 NirC chains in the asymmetric unit. Surprisingly, these protomers arrange into one monomer and two different types of 3D domain-swapped dimers, one of which shows pronounced asymmetry. In this article, the development of emcore and emvis, two basic software libraries for image manipulation and data visualization in cryo-EM, is presented. The main goal is to provide basic functionality organized in modular components that other developers can reuse to implement new algorithms or build graphical applications. However, this approach is flawed since the blotting process can have adverse effects on some proteins and protein complexes, and the long blot time increases exposure to the damaging air-water interface. To overcome these problems, new blotless approaches have been designed for the direct deposition of the sample on the grid. Here, different methods of producing droplets for sample deposition are compared. Using gas dynamic virtual nozzles, small and high-velocity droplets were deposited on cryo-EM grids, which spread sufficiently for high-resolution cryo-EM imaging. For those wishing to pursue a similar approach, an overview is given of the current use of spray technology for cryo-EM grid preparation and areas for enhancement are pointed out. Here, the basic statistical concepts of confidence maps are reviewed and practical guidance is provided for their interpretation and usage inside the CCP-EM suite. Limitations of the approach are discussed and extensions towards other error criteria such as the family-wise error rate are presented. The observed map features can be rendered at a common isosurface threshold, which is particularly beneficial for the interpretation of weak and noisy densities. AIM Analysis of the use of ophthalmic instruments during surgical procedures in order to propose a material management method. METHOD Mixed method study, sequential exploratory design, performed from January to June 2015, at a university hospital in southern Brazil. First, a qualitative approach was held from brainstorming and field observation. Themes were grouped into thematic categories. By connection, the quantitative stage happened through matrix arrangement and linear programming, culminating in the instrument management proposal. RESULTS Given categories - instruments reorganization according to the time of the surgical procedure and the need surgical instruments for in each procedure - guided the definition of existing restrictions and application of mathematical models. There was an average reduction of 13.10% in the number of surgical instruments per tray and an increase of 17.88% in surgical production. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS This proposal allowed the rationalization and optimization of ophthalmic instruments, favoring sustainability of the organization.OBJECTIVE To understand the perception of leadership in the work process and to promote its discussion within the Family Health Strategy scope. METHOD A qualitative approach research, guided by the action-research referential, conducted with 15 Familiy Health Strategy nurses in the inland of the state of São Paulo. Data was collected in 2015 in two interdependent phases, interviews and intervention-action, and processed according to the methodological framework of content analysis and the theoretical framework on nursing management. RESULTS The nurses showed their conceptions of leadership and the inherent challenges of practice leadership training, overlapping care and management, and management charges. In the discussion of common problems and peer learning, a conception of transformational leadership was constructed. CONCLUSIONS The common and behavioral styles of leadership influenced on the conception of leadership and mobilized the attitudes of the nurses in the work process; however, there is a need for more engagement in the training/qualification of the professionals and the services about leadership.OBJECTIVE To evaluate inflammatory signs presented in medical records of patients with a main diagnosis of epileptic seizures, admitted in an emergency unit. METHOD Cross-sectional and retrospective study. The sample was composed of 191 medical records, from children, adolescents, adults, and elders, with a clinical diagnosis of epileptic seizures, admitted between June 2016 and June 2017 at the emergency unit of a hospital in Porto Alegre/RS. RESULTS The prevalent inflammatory signs were tachypnea (33.5%) and/or fever (27.2%) associated with leukocytosis (P=0.030). Children/adolescents had seizures less frequently (P=0.010) and these were due to fever (P=0.000). Adults presented seizures more frequently (P=0.006), which were related to medication/intoxication (P=0.000). In elders, seizures occurred due to metabolic or circulatory abnormalities (P=0.000), less often due to fever (P=0.005). CONCLUSION Seizures are related to fever and tachypnea, being caused by different etiologies according to age, being more frequent in adults. Fever is related to leukocytosis, regardless of age.OBJECTIVE To analyze the meanings built by the nursing team regarding communication at shift handover in intensive care units. Observation and interviews were conducted, with a thorough description of the data and thematic content analysis. RESULTS There is acknowledgment of the meaning of handover in nursing care, which is expressed in behaviors aimed at avoiding inefficacy or the incorrect perception of communication; on the other hand, there is little participation of nursing technicians, with side talks, lack of attention and incomplete information, which compromises their effectiveness. CONCLUSION Professionals should understand their role in the communication process by playing it with active participation to reduce handover noises.Cruzia lauroi sp. nov. is described from Salvator merianae (Duméril & Bibron, 1839) (Squamata; Teiidae). Blood samples from 300 calves were collected, followed by DNA extraction and nested PCR using oligonucleotide primers to amplify fragments of the semi-nested for the msp5 gene (A. marginale), sbp-4 (B. bovis) and rap-1a (B. bigemina) Among the examined calves, the prevalence of A. marginale was 55.6% (n=167/300), B. bovis was 4.0% (n=12/300) and B. bigemina was 15.3% (n=46/300), by PCR techniques. Parasitic forms of A. marginale and B. bigemina were found in 36,3% and 2,6% of the blood smears while B. bovis was not detected. There was a statistical difference between the positivity of infected animals in the age groups 1 (10-70 days) and (>70-300 days) for A. marginale and B. bigemina. A total of 15 calves with the classic symptoms of disease were examined, and the samples obtained were confirmed as a simple infection by A.
