To assist the transition of 3D bioprinting technology from simple lab-based tissue fabrication, to fully functional and implantable organs, the technology must not only provide shape control, but also functional control. This can be accomplished by replicating the cellular composition of the native tissue at the microscale, such that cell types interact to provide the desired function. There is therefore a need for precise, controllable, multi-material printing that could allow for high, possibly even single cell, resolution. This paper aims to draw attention to technological advancements made in 3D bioprinting that target the lack of multi-material, and/or multi cell-type, printing capabilities of most current devices. Unlike other reviews in the field, which largely focus on variations in single-material 3D bioprinting involving the standard methods of extrusion-based, droplet-based, laser-based, or stereolithographic methods; this review concentrates on sophisticated multi-material 3D bioprinting using multi-cartridge printheads, co-axial nozzles and microfluidic-enhanced printing nozzles.The aim of this practice-based cohort study was to determine the performance and influence of possible variables in class II restorations related to practice, patient, tooth, and restoration. To do this, electronic patient files from 11 general practices in the Netherlands were collected, and 31,472 restorations placed between January 2015 and October 2017 were analysed. The observation time of restorations varied from 0 to 2.7 years, resulting in a mean annual failure rate (AFR) of 7.8% at 2 years. However, wide variation in AFRs existed among the operators, varying between 3.6% and 11.4%. An excess of patient-related variables, such as age, general health, periodontal status, caries risk and the presence of parafunctional habits and tooth or restoration-related factors, increases the risk of reintervention. Specimens were thermo-mechanically aged and axially loaded until failure. Data were analysed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). Fracture strength was significantly affected by the type of restoration (p = 0.000). LDS had significantly higher fracture strength than the control group and GFRC, C and CP groups. Groups EC, LDS and P-LDS were not statistically different from each other in fracture strength. This was also the case with EC, P-LDS and all composite groups. Therefore, a new definition has been formulated in which dental sleep medicine has been described to include the diagnostic and treatment aspects of all dental sleep disorders. In this article, the reasons why this development was initiated and the current status of dental sleep medicine as a broader discipline are described, along with a brief description of the various dental sleep disorders.Background Echocardiographic cardiac parameters in the prone position are usually obtained with an esophageal probe. The feasibility of obtaining them by means of a transthoracic approach is unknown. Objective Estimating the feasibility to obtain parameters of the right ventricle by transthoracic echocardiography in prone position on the subject. Methods Pilot design of consecutive case series without cardiopulmonary disease. Demographic, vital signs and echocardiographic variables were defined in the ventral initial, prone and ventral final decubitus positions. The data are shown with averages and standard deviations, and frequencies and percentages according to the variable. The differences between the positions were calculated with ANOVA of repeated samples and adjustment of Bonferroni test. Intra-subject variability was obtained by the Bland-Altman procedure and its 95% confidence interval. Results We studied 50 subjects, 44 (88%) males, age 30 ± 6 years and body mass index 25.65 ± 2.71 kg/m2. Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and S'-wave were measured 100% of the time.

All plasma samples were analyzed by LC-MS/MS for acetaminophen and its major metabolites acetaminophen glucuronide and acetaminophen sulfate. In addition, plasma and urine samples were collected for analysis of corticosterone and creatinine to assess stress levels. Comparable plasma exposure to acetaminophen and its two metabolites were observed in the plasma obtained via sparse sublingual vein bleeding and serial tail vein microsampling and between the 'wet' and 'dried' plasma obtained by the latter. Furthermore, comparable corticosterone levels or corticosterone/creatinine ratios between the two groups suggested that serial tail vein microsampling without anesthesia did not increase any additional levels of stress as compared to the conventional sampling with anesthesia, confirming the utility of microsampling for plasma or DPS in rodent TK assessment.

BACKGROUND Prophylactic vaccines are critical in preventing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) primarily caused by human enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection. Children aged less than 5 years are especially susceptible to EV71 infections. In addition to the development of vaccines containing the inactivated virus, those containing virus-like particles (VLPs) with repeated antigens also constitute an effective preventive strategy for EV71 infections, with safety and productivity advantages. We previously developed a fusion protein composed with truncated peptides of the EV71 capsid protein, which assembled into spherical particles. This study aimed to assess the immunoprotective effects of this fusion protein as a vaccine candidate in a mouse model of EV71 infection. Mast cells express ETARs and can thereby be degranulated by ET-1, and mast cell proteases chymase and carboxypeptidase A3 (CPA3) are known to either generate or degrade ET-1, respectively, suggesting a role for mast cell proteases in the regulation of ET-1-induced itch. The mouse mast cell proteases (mMCPs) mMCP4 (chymase), mMCP6 (tryptase), and CPA3 are found in connective tissue type mast cells and are the closest functional homologs to human mast cell proteases, but little is known about their role in endothelin-induced itch. METHODS In this study, we evaluated the effects of mast cell protease deficiency on scratching behavior induced by ET-1. To investigate this, **** knock-out and transgenic **** were injected intradermally with ET-1 and their scratching behavior was recorded and analyzed. RESULTS CPA3-deficient **** and **** lacking all three proteases demonstrated highly elevated levels of scratching behavior compared with wild-type controls. Mutation rate drives viral evolution and genome variability, thereby enabling viruses to escape host immunity and to develop drug resistance. METHODS We analyzed 220 genomic sequences from the GISAID database derived from patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 worldwide from December 2019 to mid-March 2020. SARS-CoV-2 reference genome was obtained from the GenBank database. Genomes alignment was performed using Clustal Omega. Mann-Whitney and Fisher-Exact tests were used to assess statistical significance. RESULTS We characterized 8 novel recurrent mutations of SARS-CoV-2, located at positions 1397, 2891, 14408iety in a SARS-CoV-2 RdRp hydrophobic cleft, which is adjacent to the 14408 mutation we identified. Consequently, it is important to study and characterize SARS-CoV-2 RdRp mutation in order to assess possible drug-resistance viral phenotypes. Regarding result similarity and contour smoothness, our proposed deeply supervised dilated fully convolutional DenseNet (D2FC-DN) is better than ATASM (the state-of-art segmentation method) and representative CNN methods. As a practical application, our proposed method can be used to build a tendon and synovial sheath model that can be used in a training system for ultrasound-guided trigger finger surgery. CONCLUSION We proposed a D2FC-DN for finger tendon and synovial sheath segmentation in ultrasound images. The segmentation results were remarkably accurate for two datasets. It can be applied to assist the diagnosis of trigger finger by highlighting the tissues and generate models for surgical training systems in the future. METHODS We propose a novel finger tendon segmentation method for use with ultrasound images that can also be used for synovial sheath segmentation that yields a more complete description for analysis. In this study, a hybrid of effective convolutional neural network techniques are applied, resulting in a deeply supervised dilated fully convolutional DenseNet (D2FC-DN), which displayed excellent segmentation performance on the tendon and synovial sheath.

Background & aims Systemic inflammation has been reported as a new predictor for cancer outcomes. This study aimed i) to identify the neutrophil to lymphocytes ratio (NLR) cut-off point that best predicts sarcopenia and ii) to verify the association between NLR and sarcopenia risk in hospitalized cancer patients. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ykl5-124.html Methods A cross-sectional study enrolled a total of 123 hospitalized cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and/or undergoing surgery. Systemic inflammation was assessed as revealed by circulating levels of C-reactive protein, neutrophils, platelet, and by calculating platelet-lymphocytes ratio (PLR) and NLR. Sarcopenia risk was assessed using the Strength, Assistance for walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, and Falls (SARC-F; score≥4 identifies sarcopenia risk). ROC curve were used to identify the best NLR cut-off value which predicts sarcopenia risk. Differences between groups were tested using the T Student, Mann-Whitney, or Chi-Square tests. Logistic regression analyses were done to assess the association between NLR and sarcopenia risk. Results ROC curve revealed that the best cut-off point to predict sarcopenia risk was NLR ≥6.5 (sensitivity of 45% and specificity of 81%). Those with NLR ≥6.5 presented higher C-reactive protein, neutrophils, platelet-lymphocytes ratio (PLR), and SARC-F than NLR less then 6.5 group. A negative correlation was found between NLR and gait speed (r = -0.48, p = 0.0001), handgrip strength (r = -0.29, p = 0.002), arm circumference (r = -0.29, p = 0.002) and calf circumference (r = -0.28, p = 0.003). Those with increased NLR values were associated with high sarcopenia risk in crude model, as well as if adjusted by smoking, alcohol intake, and sex (OR1.19 [95%CI1.03-1.37], p = 0.013) or by BMI (OR1.20 [95%CI1.05-1.38], p = 0.006). Evidence suggests that nutritional deficiency induces poor postnatal growth. This study investigates impacts of target fortification on preterm growth and metabolism by adjusting breast milk macronutrients. Methods This study was conducted as a single-centre, double-blind, randomized controlled trial for infants less then 30 gestational weeks. The control group received standard fortification and the intervention group received standard plus target fortification adding modular protein, lipids, and carbohydrates. Body composition was measured using air displacement plethysmography. Primary outcome was weight gain during the first 21 days of intervention. Results Baseline characteristics, morbidities, and total fluid intake were not different between groups (intervention n = 52, control n = 51). The intervention group infants had higher macronutrient intakes, weight gain (21.2 ± 2.5 vs 19.3 ± 2.4 g/kg/d, mean difference 1.9 g/kg/d, 95% CI 0.9 - 2.9), and body weight. Infants in the intervention group from mothers with below-average breast milk protein content showed greatest impact on weight at 36 weeks (2580 ± 280 g vs 2210 ± 300 g), length, head circumference, fat, and fat-free mass. Also, feeding intolerance was less frequent, blood urea was higher, and triglycerides were lower. Background & aims Systemic inflammation has been reported as a new predictor for cancer outcomes. This study aimed i) to identify the neutrophil to lymphocytes ratio (NLR) cut-off point that best predicts sarcopenia and ii) to verify the association between NLR and sarcopenia risk in hospitalized cancer patients. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ykl5-124.html Methods A cross-sectional study enrolled a total of 123 hospitalized cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and/or undergoing surgery. Systemic inflammation was assessed as revealed by circulating levels of C-reactive protein, neutrophils, platelet, and by calculating platelet-lymphocytes ratio (PLR) and NLR. Sarcopenia risk was assessed using the Strength, Assistance for walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, and Falls (SARC-F; score≥4 identifies sarcopenia risk). ROC curve were used to identify the best NLR cut-off value which predicts sarcopenia risk. Differences between groups were tested using the T Student, Mann-Whitney, or Chi-Square tests. Logistic regression analyses were done to assess the association between NLR and sarcopenia risk. Results ROC curve revealed that the best cut-off point to predict sarcopenia risk was NLR ≥6.5 (sensitivity of 45% and specificity of 81%). Those with NLR ≥6.5 presented higher C-reactive protein, neutrophils, platelet-lymphocytes ratio (PLR), and SARC-F than NLR less then 6.5 group. A negative correlation was found between NLR and gait speed (r = -0.48, p = 0.0001), handgrip strength (r = -0.29, p = 0.002), arm circumference (r = -0.29, p = 0.002) and calf circumference (r = -0.28, p = 0.003). Those with increased NLR values were associated with high sarcopenia risk in crude model, as well as if adjusted by smoking, alcohol intake, and sex (OR1.19 [95%CI1.03-1.37], p = 0.013) or by BMI (OR1.20 [95%CI1.05-1.38], p = 0.006). Background Diabetes can cause biomechanical alterations that may be responsible for additional changes to those existing in a regular gestational period. The way a maternal body responds when affected by diabetes has not been clearly understood. This study aimed to describe the influence of type 1 diabetes on pregnant women's postural control. Methods Forty pregnant women in their third gestational trimester were allocated in two equal groups - the control group and the type 1 diabetic group. The variables related to postural control and balance were assessed using photogrammetry (head protrusion; cervical lordosis; thoracic kyphosis; lumbar lordosis; pelvic anteversion, knee flexion, tibiotarsal and foot inclination angles were measured), and baropodometry (anteroposterior and mediolateral distance trajectory of the center of pressure, amplitude and average speed of displacement of the center of pressure). Findings The results of the type 1 diabetic group showed, in the postural analysis, lower head protrusion and pelvic anteversion angles, while there was higher cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis angles. In the baropodometry, the anteroposterior distance and the amplitude of the center of pressure displacement with eyes open and closed were higher. Interpretation The findings suggest that type 1 diabetes mellitus in the third trimester of pregnancy is associated with postural changes, a decrease in the active ankle range of motion and increase in the anteroposterior oscillation of the center of pressure, with negative repercussions for postural control.Objectives The purpose of this systematic review was to describe psychiatric presentations observed among Takotsubo syndrome (TS) patients, how psychiatric conditions and associated treatments impact TS events, and how psychiatric conditions are managed alongside TS medical treatment and follow-up. Methods We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Web of Science between 1990 and 2019 for case reports of TS with comorbid psychiatric conditions, behaviors, or substance use. Results Of 2403 records, we included 243 records comprising 252 total cases. Common psychiatric conditions included depression (n = 98; 39%), anxiety (n = 44, 17%), alcohol use (n = 35, 14%), suicidality (n = 30, 12%), and severe mental illness (n = 25, 10%). Psychiatric conditions were frequently associated with triggering TS events (61%). Less than one-third of cases reported providing psychiatric care during hospitalization (n = 80, 32%). Only 33 cases (13%) described psychiatric functioning at follow-up. All case studies were assessed to be of low quality; patterns of reporting bias were observed. Conclusions Despite heterogeneous psychiatric presentations among TS patients, psychiatric treatment was rarely incorporated into the medical care or addressed at follow-up. This gap may be better attended to by integrating psychiatrists and psychologists into the multidisciplinary treatment team. In three experiments, we tested this hypothesis using analogous paradigms across settings, with event-based, time-of-day, and time-interval cued PM tasks. Materials and methods Electronic medical records from 2003 to 2017 of patients diagnosed with benign breast lesions were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with pathologically confirmed GM were identified. All treatment methods were documented, which included observation, oral steroids, methotrexate, steroid injection, and surgical excision. Primary outcome was time to resolution. Effectiveness was based on relief of symptoms along with duration of symptoms from initial time of diagnosis to full relief. Analysis of variance was used to compare outcomes between groups. Results Of the 49 patients with confirmed GM diagnoses, 57% had observation only, 24% had steroid injection, and 19% had surgical resection. The average time to resolution differed significantly among the three groups (11.5 mo from the start of observation, 2.0 mo from the time of steroid injection, and 0.5 mo from the time of surgical excision, P less then 0.001). Conclusions Intralesional steroid injection is an effective treatment of GM. Selective management is appropriate for patients with GM, and surgical resection is not required for most patients.

The genome of S. Typhimurium codes for diverse virulence factors, among which are the toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems. SehAB is a type II TA, where SehA is the toxin and SehB is the antitoxin. It was previously reported that the absence of the SehB antitoxin affects the growth of S. Typhimurium. In addition, the SehB antitoxin can interact directly with the SehA toxin neutralizing its toxic effect as well as repressing its own expression. We identified conserved residues on SehB homologous proteins. Point mutations were introduced at both N- and C-terminal of SehB antitoxin to analyze the effect of these changes on its transcription repressor function, on its ability to form homodimers and on the virulence of S. Typhimurium. All changes in amino acid residues at both the N- and C-terminal affected the repressor function of SehB antitoxin and they were required for DNA-binding activity. Mutations in the amino acid residues at the N-terminal showed a lower capacity for homodimer formation of the SehB protein. However, none of the SehB point mutants were affected in the interaction with the SehA toxin. In terms of virulence, the eight single-amino acid mutations were attenuated for virulence in the mouse model. In agreement with our results, the eight amino acid residues of SehB antitoxin were required for its repressor activity, affecting both homodimerization and DNA-binding activity, supporting the notion that both activities of SehB antitoxin are required to confer virulence to Salmonella enterica. Here we show that deletion of sntB in P. expansum results in several phenotypic changes in the fungus including stunted vegetative growth, reduced conidiation, but enhanced germination rates as well as decreased virulence on Golden Delicious apples. In addition, a decrease in both patulin and citrinin biosynthesis in vitro and patulin in apples, was observed. SntB positively regulates expression of three global regulators of virulence and secondary metabolism (LaeA, CreA, and PacC) which may explain in part some of the phenotypic and virulence defects of the PeΔsntB strain. Lastly, results from this study revealed that the controlled environmental factors (low temperatures and high CO2 levels) to which P. expansum is commonly exposed during fruit storage, resulted in a significant reduction of sntB expression and consequent patulin and citrinin reduction. The genome of S. Typhimurium codes for diverse virulence factors, among which are the toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems. SehAB is a type II TA, where SehA is the toxin and SehB is the antitoxin. It was previously reported that the absence of the SehB antitoxin affects the growth of S. Typhimurium. In addition, the SehB antitoxin can interact directly with the SehA toxin neutralizing its toxic effect as well as repressing its own expression. We identified conserved residues on SehB homologous proteins. Point mutations were introduced at both N- and C-terminal of SehB antitoxin to analyze the effect of these changes on its transcription repressor function, on its ability to form homodimers and on the virulence of S. Typhimurium. All changes in amino acid residues at both the N- and C-terminal affected the repressor function of SehB antitoxin and they were required for DNA-binding activity. Mutations in the amino acid residues at the N-terminal showed a lower capacity for homodimer formation of the SehB protein. However, none of the SehB point mutants were affected in the interaction with the SehA toxin. In terms of virulence, the eight single-amino acid mutations were attenuated for virulence in the mouse model. In agreement with our results, the eight amino acid residues of SehB antitoxin were required for its repressor activity, affecting both homodimerization and DNA-binding activity, supporting the notion that both activities of SehB antitoxin are required to confer virulence to Salmonella enterica. Here we show that deletion of sntB in P. expansum results in several phenotypic changes in the fungus including stunted vegetative growth, reduced conidiation, but enhanced germination rates as well as decreased virulence on Golden Delicious apples. In addition, a decrease in both patulin and citrinin biosynthesis in vitro and patulin in apples, was observed. SntB positively regulates expression of three global regulators of virulence and secondary metabolism (LaeA, CreA, and PacC) which may explain in part some of the phenotypic and virulence defects of the PeΔsntB strain. Lastly, results from this study revealed that the controlled environmental factors (low temperatures and high CO2 levels) to which P. expansum is commonly exposed during fruit storage, resulted in a significant reduction of sntB expression and consequent patulin and citrinin reduction. METHODS In this prospective study, a cohort of 137 patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were enrolled. Clinical information and laboratory data were retrieved from electronic medical records. Viral positivity duration was calculated by an interval from the day SARS-CoV-2 positive confirmed to the day SARS-CoV-2 returned to negative in these 137 COVID-19 patients. Early risk factors for the duration of SARS-CoV-2 viral positivity were evaluated. FINDINGS The median SARS-CoV-2 viral positivity duration is 12 days (range 4 days ~ 45 days) for this cohort. Cox regression results showed a significantly shorter viral positivity duration was related to younger [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.658, p = 0.017], not severe patient (HR = 0.653, p = 0.076), higher count of lymphocytes (HR = 1.464, p = 0.033), eosinophils (HR = 1.514, p = 0.020) and CD8+ T cells (HR=1.745, p=0.033), and lower IL-6 (HR = 0.664, p = 0.036) and IL-10 (HR = 0.631, p = 0.021). Multivariate analysis with covariables adjusted results showed that the count of CD8+ T cells (HR=2.376, p=0.114) was a predominant risk factor for the SARS-CoV-2 viral positivity duration. INTERPRETATION Our findings firstly provided early laboratory parameters such as count of CD8+ T cells, as risk factors for the duration of SARS-CoV-2 viral positivity, which have significance in control and prevention of the disease. © The Author(s) 2020. The diagnosis of fungal infection was provided within 24 h in nine cases, four during onsite evaluation. Microbial cultures were confirmatory in seven cases, and five cases exhibited negative cultures with positive serology. METHODS In a prospective cohort study, 78 children (34 girls) born preterm without retinopathy of prematurity were examined regarding length/height, weight, head circumference and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) at birth and at 5 years of age. At 5 years, IGF-binding protein 3 and blood pressure were also measured. A detailed ophthalmological examination including ocular dimensions, fundus morphology, visual fields, visual evoked potentials and perceptual visual dysfunction was performed. Children born to preeclamptic mothers (n = 24) were compared to children with non-preeclamptic mothers (n = 54). RESULTS Children exposed to preeclampsia had lower weight (p = 0.0002, mean difference -1.46, 95% CI -2.09; -0.83), length (p = 0.013, -1.10, 95% CI -1.92; -0.23) and IGF-I levels (p = 0.0002, -26.0, 95% CI -36.0; -16.1) at birth compared to non-exposed children. At 5 years of age, the preeclamptic group had larger optic cup areas (p = 0.0006, 0.32, 95% CI 0.15; 0.46, in right eye, p = 0.049, 0.18, 95% CI 0.001; 0.35, in left eye). There was no significant difference between the groups regarding other ophthalmological findings or blood pressure. Children with reduced eye motility had lower neonatal IGF-I levels (p = 0.033, 15.5, 95% CI 1.1; 30.3). CONCLUSION Preeclampsia was shown to affect growth and IGF-I levels, confirming previous studies. Children exposed to preeclampsia were shown to have larger optic cup areas. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of employing either Mitomycin C (MMC), 5-Fluoruracil (5-FU) or no anti-metabolite in needling revision of trabeculectomies. METHODS We performed a systematic literature search in PubMed, Cochrane and EMBASE to identify randomized and non-randomized trials published between year 2000 and March 2019 comparing the efficacy of needling filtering blebs when using no anti-fibrotic agent, ****or 5-FU in patients with glaucoma. Efficacy was defined as intraocular pressure at 12 months or latest follow-up, rate of complications, rates of success and the number of re-needling cases. Comparisons were made using network meta-analyses. RESULTS We identified one randomized trial and five retrospective trials. Twelve months after needling revision of trabeculectomy, no significant difference was observed when comparing the effect of the use of ****with 5-FU or without any use of anti-metabolite on intraocular pressure, complication rates, qualified success, complete success or number of re-needling cases. CONCLUSION We found no significant difference in the efficacy of using either MMC, 5-FU or no anti-metabolite in needling revision of trabeculectomies. The number of studies meeting our inclusion criteria was limited. Considering the design of studies, only one was randomized leading to an overall low quality of evidence on the subject matter. This study hypothesized an inverse relationship between adipocyte size and daily energy intake (DEI). METHODS Seventy healthy adults (39 men and 31 women; BMI 30.0 [SD 6.3]) underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and subcutaneous fat biopsies from the abdomen and thigh. Osmium-fixed adipocytes were sized with a Coulter counter. Volunteers self-selected food from a vending machine paradigm as the only source of energy intake over 3 days as inpatients. Volunteers also had 24-hour respiratory quotient (RQ) measured in a whole-room indirect calorimeter. RESULTS In women, the large cell peak diameter of the thigh depot was greater than that of the abdominal depot (Δ = +15.8 μm; P less then 0.0001). In women, thigh peak diameter was inversely associated with DEI (β = -264.7 kcal/d per 10-μm difference; P = 0.03) after adjusting for demographics and body composition. Individuals were randomly assigned to 2 groups to receive additional dapagliflozin up to 10 mg once daily or to remain on metformin up to 1,000 mg twice daily. METHODS In a prospective cohort study, 78 children (34 girls) born preterm without retinopathy of prematurity were examined regarding length/height, weight, head circumference and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) at birth and at 5 years of age. At 5 years, IGF-binding protein 3 and blood pressure were also measured. A detailed ophthalmological examination including ocular dimensions, fundus morphology, visual fields, visual evoked potentials and perceptual visual dysfunction was performed. Children born to preeclamptic mothers (n = 24) were compared to children with non-preeclamptic mothers (n = 54). RESULTS Children exposed to preeclampsia had lower weight (p = 0.0002, mean difference -1.46, 95% CI -2.09; -0.83), length (p = 0.013, -1.10, 95% CI -1.92; -0.23) and IGF-I levels (p = 0.0002, -26.0, 95% CI -36.0; -16.1) at birth compared to non-exposed children. At 5 years of age, the preeclamptic group had larger optic cup areas (p = 0.0006, 0.32, 95% CI 0.15; 0.46, in right eye, p = 0.049, 0.18, 95% CI 0.001; 0.35, in left eye). There was no significant difference between the groups regarding other ophthalmological findings or blood pressure. Children with reduced eye motility had lower neonatal IGF-I levels (p = 0.033, 15.5, 95% CI 1.1; 30.3). CONCLUSION Preeclampsia was shown to affect growth and IGF-I levels, confirming previous studies. Children exposed to preeclampsia were shown to have larger optic cup areas. Failing filtration bleb and consequently increased intraocular pressure is an important cause of continuous visual field deterioration after uncomplicated glaucoma surgery. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of employing either Mitomycin C (MMC), 5-Fluoruracil (5-FU) or no anti-metabolite in needling revision of trabeculectomies. METHODS We performed a systematic literature search in PubMed, Cochrane and EMBASE to identify randomized and non-randomized trials published between year 2000 and March 2019 comparing the efficacy of needling filtering blebs when using no anti-fibrotic agent, MMC or 5-FU in patients with glaucoma. Efficacy was defined as intraocular pressure at 12 months or latest follow-up, rate of complications, rates of success and the number of re-needling cases. Comparisons were made using network meta-analyses. RESULTS We identified one randomized trial and five retrospective trials. Twelve months after needling revision of trabeculectomy, no significant difference was observed when comparing the effect of the use of MMC with 5-FU or without any use of anti-metabolite on intraocular pressure, complication rates, qualified success, complete success or number of re-needling cases. CONCLUSION We found no significant difference in the efficacy of using either MMC, 5-FU or no anti-metabolite in needling revision of trabeculectomies. The number of studies meeting our inclusion criteria was limited. Considering the design of studies, only one was randomized leading to an overall low quality of evidence on the subject matter. This study hypothesized an inverse relationship between adipocyte size and daily energy intake (DEI). METHODS Seventy healthy adults (39 men and 31 women; BMI 30.0 [SD 6.3]) underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and subcutaneous fat biopsies from the abdomen and thigh. Osmium-fixed adipocytes were sized with a Coulter counter. Volunteers self-selected food from a vending machine paradigm as the only source of energy intake over 3 days as inpatients. Volunteers also had 24-hour respiratory quotient (RQ) measured in a whole-room indirect calorimeter. RESULTS In women, the large cell peak diameter of the thigh depot was greater than that of the abdominal depot (Δ = +15.8 μm; P less then 0.0001). In women, thigh peak diameter was inversely associated with DEI (β = -264.7 kcal/d per 10-μm difference; P = 0.03) after adjusting for demographics and body composition.
