Its ease of administration, safety, and fast onset of action make it of particular relevance to emergency medicine. Additionally, outside the hospital, it has the advantage of increased temperature stability and portability over current standard care. New evidence of its efficacy is emerging; however, currently, its use in Europe is not widespread. The objective of this study will be to systematically evaluate the evidence on inhaled methoxyflurane to determine if it is a superior analgesia in the acute trauma setting.

    Klebsiella pneumoniae brain abscesses are a rare entity and typically present in immunocompromised patients. We present a case of an overall healthy patient who developed a Klebsiella pneumoniae brain abscess in the absence of liver pathology.

    A 46-year-old Vietnamese man with past medical history significant for hypertension presented to the hospital with acute on chronic worsening of altered mental status, personality changes, and gait dysfunction. Initial vitals revealed temperature of 37.1°C, heart rate 87 beats/minute, blood pressure 150/87 mmHg, respiratory rate 18/minute, and oxygen saturation 99% on room air. Physical exam was notable for altered mental status, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 14, and right lower facial droop. Cardiopulmonary exam was within normal limits. Head computed tomography (CT) showed a left frontotemporal mass, with subsequent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealing a ring-enhancing lesion concerning for a brain abscess. The abscess was urgently drained; howeverch is required for a potential favorable outcome.
    Early detection of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) would help to identify tumors when curative treatments are available and beneficial. However, current screening methods for CRC, e.g., colonoscopy, may affect patients' compliance due to the uncomfortable, invasive and time-consuming process. In recent decades, methylation profiles of blood-based circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) have shown promising results in the early detection of multiple tumors. Here we conducted a study to investigate the performance of ctDNA methylation markers in early detection of CRC.

    In total, 742 participants were enrolled in the study including CRC (n = 332), healthy control (n = 333), benign colorectal disease (n = 65) and advanced adenoma (n = 12). After age-matched and randomization, 298 participants (149 cancer and 149 healthy control) were included in training set and 141 (67 cancer and 74 healthy control) were in test set. In the training set, the specificity was 89.3% (83.2-93.7%) and the sensitivity was 88.6% (82.4-93.2%). In thylation markers were promising in the early detection of CRC.     Obesity is a globally increasing health epidemic requiring early lifestyle intervention. Our main objective was to examine the effectiveness of companion-intensive multi-aspect weight management (CIMWM) in Chinese adults with obesity.

    In this 6-month, prospective, open-label, multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial, we recruited 272 obese adults aged 18-50years with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 28.0kg/m
    and capable of using smartphones. CIMWM (n = 136) offered both daily online instructions and monthly face-to-face guidance by physicians, dietitians, and health managers along with the provision of meal replacements in the first 3months. Traditional multi-aspect weight management (TMWM, n = 136) provided monthly face-to-face guidance by the same panel of professionals and the same meal replacements as CIMWM group, but required subjects to complete daily self-monitoring instead of offering daily online instructions. Body composition and metabolic parameters were assessed at baseline, 1, 2, 3, and 6months by physicians.

Therefore, we assessed the disease burden of CVD attributable to sodium intakes above 2,000 mg/day and prospectively investigated the association between dietary/urinary sodium levels and the risk of all-cause and CVD-mortality using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES).

    A total of 68,578 and 33,113 participants were included for comparative risk assessment (CRA) analysis and mortality analysis, respectively, and mean follow-up time for mortality was 5.4 years. CRA analysis was used to quantify attributable incidences of stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), and deaths attributable to sodium intake between 1998 and 2016. Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to determine the association between sodium intake and all-cause and CVD-mortality.

    Mean dietary sodium intake decreased over time, reaching 3,647 mg/day in 2016. Similarly, the population attributable fractions of stroke and IHD, and the number of CVD-associated deaths attributable to high sodium intake/excretion also decreased. In terms of association with mortality, when participants were grouped into quartiles (Q) by energy-adjusted sodium intake, those in Q2 had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than those in Q1 with lower intakes. The risk of CVD-associated mortality was higher only in females with high sodium intake in Q4 than those in Q1.

    This nationwide data indicates that, in line with previous studies of multiple cohorts, both low and high sodium intakes may be associated with an increased risk of mortality; therefore, the optimal sodium intake for Koreans needs to be revised.

    A cross-sectional study was undertaken to evaluate fluid intake and hydration status in association with cognitive function among 230 adolescents (10-14 years of age) in Petaling Perdana, Selangor, Malaysia.

    Urine color was used to measure hydration status, while fluid intake was assessed using the 15-item beverage intake questionnaire. Cognitive function was assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition.

    More than half of the adolescents were mildly or moderately dehydrated (59.6%) and only one-third (33.0%) were well hydrated. Among the daily fluid types, intakes of soft drinks (r = -0.180;
    = 0.006), sweetened tea (r = -0.184;
    = 0.005) and total sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) (r = -0.199;
    = 0.002) were negatively correlated with cognitive function. In terms of hydration status, cognitive function score was significantly higher (F-ratio = 4.102;

    , possesses anti-cancer activity. The objective of this study was to determine autophagy-inducing effect of morusin in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and investigate the underlying mechanism.

    Autophagy induction and the expression of autophagy-related proteins were analyzed by LC3 immunofluorescence and western blot, respectively. The role of autophagy and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) was determined by treating NSCLC cells with bafilomycin A1, an autophagy inhibitor, and compound C, an AMPK inhibitor. Cytotoxicity and apoptosis induction were determined by MTT assay, trypan blue exclusion assay, annexin V-propidium iodide (PI) double staining assay, and cell cycle analysis.

    Morusin increased the formation of LC3 puncta in the cytoplasm and upregulated the expression of autophagy-related 5 (Atg5), Atg12, beclin-1, and LC3II in NSCLC cells, demonstrating that morusin could induce autophagy. Treatment with bafilomycin A1 markedly reduced cell viability but increased proportions of sub-G1 phase cells and annexin V-positive cells in H460 cells. These results indicate that morusin can trigger autophagy in NSCLC cells as a defense mechanism against morusin-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, we found that AMPK and its downstream acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) were phosphorylated, while mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and its downstream p70S6 kinase (p70S6K) were dephosphorylated by morusin. Morusin-induced apoptosis was significantly increased by treatment with compound C in H460 cells. These results suggest that morusin-induced AMPK activation could protect NSCLC cells from apoptosis probably by inducing autophagy.

Therefore, we assessed the disease burden of CVD attributable to sodium intakes above 2,000 mg/day and prospectively investigated the association between dietary/urinary sodium levels and the risk of all-cause and CVD-mortality using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES). A total of 68,578 and 33,113 participants were included for comparative risk assessment (CRA) analysis and mortality analysis, respectively, and mean follow-up time for mortality was 5.4 years. CRA analysis was used to quantify attributable incidences of stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), and deaths attributable to sodium intake between 1998 and 2016. Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to determine the association between sodium intake and all-cause and CVD-mortality. Mean dietary sodium intake decreased over time, reaching 3,647 mg/day in 2016. Similarly, the population attributable fractions of stroke and IHD, and the number of CVD-associated deaths attributable to high sodium intake/excretion also decreased. In terms of association with mortality, when participants were grouped into quartiles (Q) by energy-adjusted sodium intake, those in Q2 had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than those in Q1 with lower intakes. This scoping review summarizes the current use of wearable devices/sensors that automatically detect eating-related activity in naturalistic research settings. Five databases were searched in December 2019, and 618 records were retrieved from the literature search. In this manuscript we conduct a landscape analysis of emerging evaluation frameworks developed to better manage these risks, broadly in digital health. We then propose a framework specifically for connected sensor technologies. A total of 584 participants with nicotine dependence were recruited from October 2017 to January 2018, and allocated 11 to the CASC intervention group or the control group. Both groups received a standard smoking cessation treatment with pharmacotherapy and counseling for 12 weeks. Meanwhile, the intervention group used the CASC system, and the control group used a control-app without a mobile CO checker, each for 24 weeks. The primary outcome was the biochemically validated continuous abstinence rate (CAR) from weeks 9 to 24. The main secondary outcome was an extended CAR from weeks 9 to 52. Except for 12 participants who did not download or use the apps, 285 participants were assigned to the intervention group, and 287, to the control. CAR from weeks 9 to 24 in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group (63.9% vs. 50.5%; odds ratio [OR], 1.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.24 to 2.42; P = 0.001). The CAR from weeks 9 to 52 was also higher in the intervention group than that in the control group (52.3% vs. 41.5%; OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.11 to 2.16; P = 0.010). No specific adverse events caused by the CASC system were reported. One hundred and four adults participated, comprising 25 patients with serious mental illness and 79 healthy volunteers. The study design was successful with high quality speech recordings produced to 92% of prompts (Patients 86%, Healthy 96%). The story recalls were both transcribed and scored by humans, and scores generated using natural language processing on transcriptions were comparable to human ratings (R = 0.83, within the range of human-to-human correlations of R = 0.73-0.89).   • Identification of MIB(2-methylisoborneol)-producing cyanobacteria in source water has been a big challenge for reservoir authorities because it normally requires isolation of cyanobacteria strains. Here, a protocol based on Pearson's product moment correlation analysis combined with standardized data treatment and expert judgement was developed to sort out the MIB producer(s), mainly based on routine monitoring data from an estuary drinking water reservoir in the Yangtze River, China, and a risk model using quantile regressions was established to evaluate the risk of MIB occurrences. This reservoir has suffered from MIB problems in summer since 2011. Among 323 phytoplankton species, Planktothrix was judged to be the MIB producer in this reservoir because it exhibited the highest correlation coefficient (R = 0.60) as well as the lowest false positive-ratio (FP% = 0) and false-negative rate (FN% = 14). The low false-positive rate is particularly important, since MIB should not detected without detection of the producer. A high light extinction coefficient (k=5.57±2.48 m-1) attributed to high turbidity loading in the river water lowered the subsurface water light intensity, which could protect the low irradiance Planktothrix from excessive solar radiation, and allow them to grow throughout the summer. The risk model shows that the probability of suffering unacceptable MIB concentrations (>15 ng L-1) in water is as high as 90% if the cell density of Planktothrix is >609.0 cell mL-1, while the risk will be significantly reduced to 50% and 10% at cell densities of 37.5 cell mL-1 and 9.6 cell mL-1, respectively. The approach developed in this study, including the protocol for identification of potential producers and the risk model, could provide a reference case for the management of source water suffering from MIB problems using routine monitoring data.
    Thyroid hormones (THs) play an important role in both serum uric acid (SUA) excretion and purine nucleotide metabolism. Past research mainly focused on the relationships between thyroid dysfunction and hyperuricemia. Although most subjects at risk for hyperuricemia are euthyroid, few studies have investigated the predictive values of THs on incident hyperuricemia in euthyroid adults. This study aimed to examine how free triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and thyroid-stimulating hormone are related to incident hyperuricemia in euthyroid subjects.

    Participants without baseline hyperuricemia were recruited from Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study and followed up for ∼6 years. Thyroid function was determined by chemiluminescence immunoassay methods. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA ≥416.5 μmol/L for males and ≥357.0 μmol/L for females. Thyroid function and SUA were assessed yearly during follow-up. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the relationship between thyroid function and hyperuricemia.

    The incidence rates of hyperuricemia were 109 and 50 per 1000 person-years in males and females, respectively. In males, compared with the lowest quartile, the multivariable-adjusted hazards ratios for hyperuricemia in the highest quartiles of triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and thyroid-stimulating hormone were 0.57 (0.50-0.66), 0.63 (0.54-0.73), and 1.03 (0.90-1.19) (P for trend < .0001, < .0001, and .51), respectively.     Musculoskeletal cone-beam CT (CBCT) recently appeared on the market, with image quality comparable to that of high-resolution CT. It was previously implemented mainly in craniofacial surgery and in orthopedic limb surgery for weight-bearing imaging, but without large-scale assessment in emergency settings. We therefore conducted a retrospective comparative study in an emergency radiology department 1) to assess whether introduction of CBCT dedicated to extremity traumatology reduced radiation dose delivered to the patient undergoing cross-sectional imaging, 2) to assess whether it increased turnover, and 3) to study the feasibility and practical consequences. Study hypothesis Introducing CBCT dedicated to traumatology in an emergency radiology department reduces radiation dose related to cross-sectional imaging in extremity trauma.

    Identification of MIB(2-methylisoborneol)-producing cyanobacteria in source water has been a big challenge for reservoir authorities because it normally requires isolation of cyanobacteria strains. Here, a protocol based on Pearson's product moment correlation analysis combined with standardized data treatment and expert judgement was developed to sort out the MIB producer(s), mainly based on routine monitoring data from an estuary drinking water reservoir in the Yangtze River, China, and a risk model using quantile regressions was established to evaluate the risk of MIB occurrences. This reservoir has suffered from MIB problems in summer since 2011. Among 323 phytoplankton species, Planktothrix was judged to be the MIB producer in this reservoir because it exhibited the highest correlation coefficient (R = 0.60) as well as the lowest false positive-ratio (FP% = 0) and false-negative rate (FN% = 14). The low false-positive rate is particularly important, since MIB should not detected without detection of the producer. A high light extinction coefficient (k=5.57±2.48 m-1) attributed to high turbidity loading in the river water lowered the subsurface water light intensity, which could protect the low irradiance Planktothrix from excessive solar radiation, and allow them to grow throughout the summer. There was emerging evidence for six different approaches (acupuncture, neurofeedback, saikokeishikankyoto (a herbal preparation), somatic experiencing, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and yoga).

    Given the level of evidence available, it would be premature to offer non-pharmacological and non-psychological interventions routinely, but those with evidence of efficacy provide alternatives for people who do not respond to, do not tolerate or do not want more conventional evidence-based interventions. The 22-item version of the ITQ was translated into Norwegian and administered to patients in two trauma treatment trials (total =202). We undertook a systematic review and meta-analyses following Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. A pre-determined definition of clinical importance was applied to the results and the quality of evidence was appraised using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. 30 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of a range of heterogeneous non-psychological and non-pharmacological interventions (28 in adults, two in children and adolescents) were included. There was emerging evidence for six different approaches (acupuncture, neurofeedback, saikokeishikankyoto (a herbal preparation), somatic experiencing, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and yoga). It is often assumed that individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who overreport their symptoms should be excluded from trauma-focused treatments. To investigate the effects of a brief, intensive trauma-focused treatment programme for individuals with PTSD who are overreporting symptoms. Individuals ( =205) with PTSD participated in an intensive trauma-focused treatment programme consisting of EMDR and prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, physical activity and psycho-education. Assessments took place at pre- and post-treatment (Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology; SIMS, Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5; CAPS-5). Using a high SIMS cut-off of 24 or above, 14.1% ( =29) had elevated SIMS scores (i.e. 'overreporters'). The group of overreporters showed significant decreases in PTSD-symptoms, and these treatment results did not differ significantly from other patients. Although some patients (35.5%) remained overreporters at post-treatment, SIMS scores decreased significantly during treatment.

    An extensive literature research was performed in MEDLINE and EMBASE in order to identify all network meta-analysis (NMA) and/or mixed treatment comparison (MTC) papers. NMA and/or MTC, with a ranking of the effectiveness of biologics in AS, were included in the analysis, and the adhesion to ISPOR guidelines was investigated.

  • Background Surviving family caregivers describe the end-of-life experience as "very distressing" and half of those surveyed indicate inadequate emotional support; however, little is known about the causes of distress on the last day of life. Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of the last day of life from the perspective of the surviving caregiver. Design The study used a narrative inquiry approach. Setting/Subject Surviving caregivers of deceased adult cancer patients at a single institution were invited to participate. Measurements After reviewing, coding, and categorizing the narratives individually, they were collectively considered and thematically analyzed across all cases to provide a summative analysis. Results Six themes captured the overall experiences (1) relationships and communication with health care providers impact overall experience, (2) being able to prepare for death was a source of comfort, (3) being a caregiver impacts quality of life and identity, (4) spiritual visitations as a welcome experience, (5) navigating the dying days and early grief period wrought with guilt and closure, and (6) loss of community contributes to distress and distracts from healing. Conclusions In this study, distress was most often linked to communication failures. Caregivers also experienced distress and guilt related to the loss of their caregiver role. This study aimed to analyze the effect of GMP on impaired cutaneous barrier-related signs in a rat model of AD lesions. AD-like dermatitis was induced on the skin by repeated topical applications of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, and animals were orally administered GMP before or after AD induction. The expression of skin structural proteins and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) was evaluated by immunoblot or immunohistochemistry, epidermal thickening was evaluated by histochemistry, the level of IFN-γ and changes in the microbiota were evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the quantity of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was evaluated by gas chromatography. GMP administration significantly increased filaggrin, β-defensin 2, and cathelicidin-related AMP expression in AD-like lesions. Involucrin expression was not modified. In GMP-treated animals, epidermal thickening and IFN-γ expression were strongly reduced in damaged skin. GMP treatment impacted the skin microbiota and prevented Staphylococcus aureus colonization, which is associated with AD. In addition, high levels of Bifidobacterium were detected in the feces of GMP-treated animals, and the acetic acid and butyric acid contents increased in animals prophylactically administered GMP. These results suggest that GMP markedly prevents or reverses skin barrier damage in rat AD-like lesions through a bifidogenic effect that induces fecal SCFA production with prolonged treatment. However, designing SCDGs that are compelling and aligned with their life values and self-management needs can be challenging. This article describes a qualitative study with older adults with HF who were recruited from a cardiac rehabilitation laboratory in central Texas to identify their perceptions and expectations regarding a SCDG for HF self-management. Materials and Methods A low-fidelity prototype that demonstrated the features of a SCDG was used to obtain the participants' perceptions about the value of SCDGs for HF self-management with respect to content, customization, flexibility, and usability through qualitative interviews. Results We interviewed 15 patients with HF (53% women; age range, 53-90 years; 60% white). The concept of SCDGs for HF self-management was highly acceptable (80%). Participants provided suggestions for game characters, progress in the game, and game notifications and incentives. Perceived benefits included helping users track their behaviors and establish routines, become informed on strategies to manage HF, and empower themselves to take charge of their health. Advances in assisted reproductive technologies have resulted in increasingly effective fertility preservation (FP) options. Purpose This study aimed to explore nurses' experiences of undertaking fertility-related discussions with TYAs with cancer aged 13-24 years. Methods An interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach was used. Eleven purposively selected nurses working on a specialist TYA cancer unit participated in semistructured interviews. Data were analyzed using IPA. Results Parents/family were experienced as self-appointed informal gatekeepers who were perceived to hold the power to control nurses' access to communicate with young people about fertility issues. Nurses adopted a supportive role, which was enhanced by the positive nature of their relationship with the TYA. Uncertainty was expressed over whether the TYA had been fully informed of their infertility risk and potential FP options. Conclusions Nurses should manage parental involvement sensitively if TYAs are to make informed decisions regarding their future reproductive health. There is a need for clear role delineation in fertility discussions to ensure that TYAs are provided with the opportunity to discuss infertility risk and be referred to a specialist before initiating cancer treatment. Nurses should cultivate the primacy of the nurse-TYA relationship to improve fertility care. Further research into the factors that TYAs may consider beneficial within the nurse-patient relationship is required.

Methods An interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach was used. Eleven purposively selected nurses working on a specialist TYA cancer unit participated in semistructured interviews. Data were analyzed using IPA. Results Parents/family were experienced as self-appointed informal gatekeepers who were perceived to hold the power to control nurses' access to communicate with young people about fertility issues. Nurses adopted a supportive role, which was enhanced by the positive nature of their relationship with the TYA. Uncertainty was expressed over whether the TYA had been fully informed of their infertility risk and potential FP options. Conclusions Nurses should manage parental involvement sensitively if TYAs are to make informed decisions regarding their future reproductive health. There is a need for clear role delineation in fertility discussions to ensure that TYAs are provided with the opportunity to discuss infertility risk and be referred to a specialist before initiating cancer treatment. Nurses should cultivate the primacy of the nurse-TYA relationship to improve fertility care. Further research into the factors that TYAs may consider beneficial within the nurse-patient relationship is required.

  • Background Surviving family caregivers describe the end-of-life experience as "very distressing" and half of those surveyed indicate inadequate emotional support; however, little is known about the causes of distress on the last day of life. Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of the last day of life from the perspective of the surviving caregiver. Design The study used a narrative inquiry approach. Setting/Subject Surviving caregivers of deceased adult cancer patients at a single institution were invited to participate. Measurements After reviewing, coding, and categorizing the narratives individually, they were collectively considered and thematically analyzed across all cases to provide a summative analysis. Results Six themes captured the overall experiences (1) relationships and communication with health care providers impact overall experience, (2) being able to prepare for death was a source of comfort, (3) being a caregiver impacts quality of life and identity, (4) spiritual visitations as a welcome experience, (5) navigating the dying days and early grief period wrought with guilt and closure, and (6) loss of community contributes to distress and distracts from healing. Conclusions In this study, distress was most often linked to communication failures. Caregivers also experienced distress and guilt related to the loss of their caregiver role. AD-like dermatitis was induced on the skin by repeated topical applications of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, and animals were orally administered GMP before or after AD induction. The expression of skin structural proteins and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) was evaluated by immunoblot or immunohistochemistry, epidermal thickening was evaluated by histochemistry, the level of IFN-γ and changes in the microbiota were evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the quantity of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was evaluated by gas chromatography. GMP administration significantly increased filaggrin, β-defensin 2, and cathelicidin-related AMP expression in AD-like lesions. Involucrin expression was not modified. In GMP-treated animals, epidermal thickening and IFN-γ expression were strongly reduced in damaged skin. GMP treatment impacted the skin microbiota and prevented Staphylococcus aureus colonization, which is associated with AD. In addition, high levels of Bifidobacterium were detected in the feces of GMP-treated animals, and the acetic acid and butyric acid contents increased in animals prophylactically administered GMP. These results suggest that GMP markedly prevents or reverses skin barrier damage in rat AD-like lesions through a bifidogenic effect that induces fecal SCFA production with prolonged treatment. However, designing SCDGs that are compelling and aligned with their life values and self-management needs can be challenging. This article describes a qualitative study with older adults with HF who were recruited from a cardiac rehabilitation laboratory in central Texas to identify their perceptions and expectations regarding a SCDG for HF self-management. Materials and Methods A low-fidelity prototype that demonstrated the features of a SCDG was used to obtain the participants' perceptions about the value of SCDGs for HF self-management with respect to content, customization, flexibility, and usability through qualitative interviews. Results We interviewed 15 patients with HF (53% women; age range, 53-90 years; 60% white). The concept of SCDGs for HF self-management was highly acceptable (80%). Participants provided suggestions for game characters, progress in the game, and game notifications and incentives. Perceived benefits included helping users track their behaviors and establish routines, become informed on strategies to manage HF, and empower themselves to take charge of their health. The objective of this study is to investigate the responses of SOC concentration to multiple rates of N addition as well as the roles of bacteria in SOC accumulation. We studied SOC storage and bacterial community composition under N addition treatments (0, 1.5, 3.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0, and 30.0 g N·m-2 yr-1) in a 6-yr field experiment in a temperate grassland. We determined the soil inorganic nitrogen concentration and pH in a 0-10 cm soil layer. We used high-throughput genetic sequencing to detect bacteria. N addition led to significant increases in the concentrations of SOC. N addition reduced the soil pH but increased the NO3-N and NH4-N levels. The bacterial diversity was highest under low nitrogen addition. N addition increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, and Proteobacteria became the second dominant phylum under high N addition. Structural equation modeling further revealed that soil pH and bacterial community structure have an impact on SOC under N deposition. Nitrogen-regulated SOC is associated with Proteobacteria and Planctomycetes. All the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) indices of penicillin G, in combination with IAL, against β-lactamase-positive S. aureus, were less than 0.5, and ranged from 0.10 ± 0.02 to 0.38 ± 0.17. The survival rate of S. aureus-infected **** increased significantly from 35.29% to 88.24% within 144 h following multiple compound therapy approaches. Although the responsibility for the safety of these compounds/foods lies with the food business operator placing the product on the market, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) carries out scientific evaluations to assess the risks for human health. To facilitate this procedure, different guidelines exist at the European level to explain the tier toxicity testing approach to be considered. This approach divides the evaluation into four areas (a) toxicokinetics; (b) genotoxicity; (c) subchronic and chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity; and (d) reproductive and developmental toxicity.Amongst serious biotic factors deteriorating crop yield, the most destructive pathogen of rice is Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), which causes bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease. This study involved targeted use of biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to control BLB in order to cope with the disadvantages of chemical disease control. AgNPs were biologically synthesized from natively isolated Bacillus cereus strain SZT1, which was identified through 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Synthesis of AgNPs in bacterial culture supernatant was confirmed through UV-VIS spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that the existence of AgNPs was stabilized with proteins and alcoholic groups. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed the crystalline nature and imaging with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing the spherical shape of AgNPs with particle sizes ranging from 18 to 39 nm.   • Liver cancer is a serious liver disease in which hepatoma cells and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) overproduce extracellular matrix (ECM), which involves the Golgi apparatus. Here chondroitin-modified lipid nanoparticles (CSNs) were prepared and loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and retinoic acid (RA) using a thin-film hydration-high pressure homogenization method. The resulting DOX + RA-CSNs were efficiently taken up by SMMC-7721 hepatoma cells and HSCs in culture, where they accumulated in the Golgi apparatus and destroyed it, inhibiting ECM production. Injecting DOX + RA-CSNs into **** with primary liver cancer or H22 allografts led to significantly higher tumor penetration by DOX and RA, greater antitumor efficacy, and lower DOX-related toxicity than injecting a solution of the two drugs. Immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry of liver tissues showed that DOX + RA-CSNs dramatically reduced expression of the ECM components. These results suggest that CSNs show potential for targeting drugs to the Golgi apparatus of liver cancer cells and potentially other types of tumors.Arabinoxylan (AX), an important dietary fiber from cereal grains, is mainly metabolised in the large intestine by gut bacteria, especially bifidobacteria. This study investigated the uptake and metabolism of wheat AX by a Bifidobacterium longum strain that could grow well with AX as the sole carbon source. The bacterial growth rate showed a significant correlation to the molecular weight (MW) of AX and its acid hydrolysates. Assessment of the key AX degrading enzymes suggested that the uptake and consumption of AX involved extracellular cleavage of xylan backbone and intracellular degradation of both the backbone and the arabinose substitution. The preference for native or partially hydrolysed AX with single substitutions and a sufficiently high MW suggested the structure-dependant uptake by the bacterial cells. To improve compatibility and distributional homogeneity of the fillers/matrix, BTNF was surface modified by dopamine to prepare the poly(dopamine) modified BTNF (PDA@BTNF). The obtained RC/PDA@BTNF composite films (RC-PDA@BTNF) possessed higher dielectric constant and breakdown strength than those of the RC and RC/BTNF composite films. In particular, RC/PDA@BTNF composite films with 2 vol% PDA@BTNF (RC-2PDA@BTNF) exhibited a high discharged energy density of 17.1 J/cm3 at 520 MV/m, which exceeded 40 % compared with that of RC-2BTNF at 460 MV/m. Meanwhile, RC-2PDA@BTNF could continuously work for more than 10,000 times with a high efficiency of 91 %. Furthermore, the composite films could maintain good dielectric properties for a long time when stored in vacuum condition (under 0.3 atm). Therefore, these flexible cellulose-based dielectric materials are promising in the field of novel high-performance film dielectric capacitors.Nowadays the synthesis of stable fluorescent sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) remains a big challenge. The smart cellulose nanofibres showed good antibacterial activity (above 99%) against Escherichia coli and excellent biocompatibility based on acute systemic toxicity, in vitro cytotoxicity, skin irritation, and skin sensitisation analyses. CNF-PEI-NIPAM showed an excellent dual-response performance to pH and temperature, affording the CNF-PEI-NIPAM aerogel with a high loading capacity (330.12 mg/g) for doxorubicin and a high cumulative release rate (59.45 %) at 37 °C and pH 3. These advantages enable the smart cellulose nanofibres to be applied in the fields of food and biomedicine. Interestingly, the interaction between the collapse and expansion of the dual-responsive polymer molecular chains on the CNF-COOH was revealed based on in situ characterisation of the solid materials, which is valuable for the structural design and application of cellulose-based dual-responsive smart nanofibres.This study aims to derive regenerated cellulose (RC) from lignin/hemicellulose-free Eucheuma cottonii for its independent stabilization of Pickering emulsion. The RC exhibits a fibrillar morphology with diameters ranging from 17 to 157 nm and stabilizes paraffin oil-Pickering emulsions without any co-stabilizer. It was found that the emulsion stability, viscosities and viscoelasticity correlate positively with RC concentration. All emulsion samples depict gel-like behavior. Under different oil fraction at a constant RC concentration, anomalies were found in emulsion properties. This can be attributed to the aggregating behavior of RC at the oil-water interface, the degree of gel-like structure formation due to materials interaction within the emulsion system, and the variations of microscopic droplet cluster interactions under shear condition. The emulsions portrayed excellent robustness against harsh salinity, high temperature and extreme pH fluctuation. Hence, these findings had elucidated the plausibility of macroalgae-derived RC in enhanced oil recovery application.
    Liver cancer is a serious liver disease in which hepatoma cells and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) overproduce extracellular matrix (ECM), which involves the Golgi apparatus. Here chondroitin-modified lipid nanoparticles (CSNs) were prepared and loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and retinoic acid (RA) using a thin-film hydration-high pressure homogenization method. The resulting DOX + RA-CSNs were efficiently taken up by SMMC-7721 hepatoma cells and HSCs in culture, where they accumulated in the Golgi apparatus and destroyed it, inhibiting ECM production. Injecting DOX + RA-CSNs into mice with primary liver cancer or H22 allografts led to significantly higher tumor penetration by DOX and RA, greater antitumor efficacy, and lower DOX-related toxicity than injecting a solution of the two drugs. Immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry of liver tissues showed that DOX + RA-CSNs dramatically reduced expression of the ECM components. These results suggest that CSNs show potential for targeting drugs to the Golgi apparatus of liver cancer cells and potentially other types of tumors.Arabinoxylan (AX), an important dietary fiber from cereal grains, is mainly metabolised in the large intestine by gut bacteria, especially bifidobacteria. This study investigated the uptake and metabolism of wheat AX by a Bifidobacterium longum strain that could grow well with AX as the sole carbon source. The bacterial growth rate showed a significant correlation to the molecular weight (MW) of AX and its acid hydrolysates. Assessment of the key AX degrading enzymes suggested that the uptake and consumption of AX involved extracellular cleavage of xylan backbone and intracellular degradation of both the backbone and the arabinose substitution.
