Here, we describe applications of ClearView Radiation Shielding in nuclear plants and hospitals. ClearView Radiation Shielding is used to shield nuclear power plant workers from Co in critical path and high dose in refueling outages to observe automase from I, 2) 35.15% of the effective dose from Cs, and 3) 22.5% of the effective dose from Co. Isotopes in the range of 35 keV to 1899 keV. 3.81 were attenuated greater than 90% with a ClearView Radiation Shielding shield thickness of 7.62 cm (3"). The half-value layer for Co with a ClearView Radiation Shielding thickness of 3.81 cm (1.5") attenuated the effective dose of F gammas by 85.59%. With a density of 2.3 g cm, ClearView Radiation Shielding was measured to be half the weight of lead for equal shielding. ClearView Radiation Shielding is transparent, lightweight, and an alternative material to conventional radiation shields to reduce radiation exposure.Operational practices in nuclear power utilities often restrict job assignments for workers with internal contamination due to the difficulty of monitoring for new intakes and strict radioactive material controls.     The effective dose of an individual in the vicinity of a patient is described by a piecewise function that is integrated over periods of time that are defined by several variables relevant to clinical planning of fractionated radionuclide therapy protocols. This solution is compared to a simpler calculation that treats all administrations as identical events.

    For the two compared methodologies, their equivalence for estimating effective dose depends on several variables. However, for protocols where the elimination time of the radionuclide is far smaller than the time bettion, will be taken into account. Lastly, a spreadsheet that incorporates the presented solution has been made freely available for download.
    Pain and depression have a high impact on caring for the people who need palliative care, but both of these are neglected compared with the approach for other symptoms encountered by these patients.

    There are few studies in humans that support the existence of common neural circuits between depression and pain that also explore the use of drugs with effects in both conditions. More knowledge is needed about the relationship of these clinical entities that will lead to the optimization of the treatment and improvement of quality of life.

    We conducted a search in PubMed to identify relevant articles and reviews that have been published in the last 5 years, concerning the topic of common pathways between depression and pain (2014-April 2019).

    The connections between the 2 clinical entities start at the level of the cortical regions. The hippocampus is the main site of neural changes, modification of the immune system, neuromodulators, neurotransmitters, and signaling pathways implicated in both conditions. Increased levels of peripheral proinflammatory cytokines and neuroinflammatory changes are related to the physiopathology of these entities. Inflammation links depression and pain by altering neural circuits and changes in their common cortical regions. Antidepressants are used to treat depression and chronic, pain but more experimental studies are needed to determine which antidepressant drugs are the most effective in treating the 2 entities.

    Surgical repair of sagittal suture craniosynostosis is highly variable, and optimal timing/use of bone grafts remains a subset of parameters that continue to be studied. We sought to compare cephalometric outcomes of early surgical intervention without bone grafting compared to later intervention with bone grafting. Patients undergoing primary surgical repair of nonsyndromic sagittal suture craniosynostosis between 2015 and 2019 were followed with preoperative measurements of cephalic index along with postoperative measurements at 6 months to 1 year, respectively.     This study aims to present the termination of pregnancy (TOP) rates and elucidate the decision-making process following a prenatal diagnosis of Trisomy 21 in Turkey.

    This retrospective single-center study was conducted with 146 pregnant women between January 2016 and December 2019 in a tertiary hospital. Data on maternal characteristics, sonographic findings, indications for chromosome analysis, and educational, religious, and economic factors that can influence the parental decision process were collected.

    The TOP rate of Down syndrome (DS) in our center was 78.8%. We concluded that maternal age, earlier diagnosis, indication for chromosome analysis, and previous pregnancies had no effect on the TOP decision. On the other hand, not having a minor or a major sonographic sign, employed mothers, middle- and high-income families, and families having a secondary or higher education tended to terminate the pregnancy affected by DS at statistically higher rates.

However, there is limited data about TOP rates and influential factors affecting the decision-making process in Muslim countries. Caesalpinia benthamiana is a valuable medicinal plant with unvalidated anti-hypertensive activity. This study was carried out to explore the antihypertensive effect of C. benthamiana on uninephrectomized hypertensive rats. Methods Fifty rats were grouped into five groups, each containing 10 animals Group A-normal control (normotensive); B-uninephrectomized control; C-uninephrectomized treated with 50 mg/kg C. benthamiana extract; D-uninephrectomized treated with 100 mg/kg C. benthamiana; and E- uninephrectomized treated with 10 mg/kg of Lisinopril. Results Significant increases were observed in systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure of uninephrectomized control rats. Furthermore, markers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, protein carbonyl, myeloperoxidase and the advanced oxidative protein products) increased significantly while antioxidant status (reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase and superoxide dismutase), reduced significantly in uninephrectomized hypertensive rats. Histopathology revealed thrombosis and occlusion of coronary vessels in the heart, and congestion in the kidney. However, the observed high blood pressure parameters were remarkably normalized together with reduction in markers of oxidative stress and improvement in antioxidant defence system of uninephrectomized hypertensive rats treated with C. benthamiana extract similar to normotensive rats. Conclusions C. benthamiana extract exhibited antihypertensive action, strong antioxidant ability, attenuated oxidative stress-mediated hypertension and lessened the development of cardiac and renal damage associated with hypertension induced by uninephrectomy and high dietary intake of salt. Together, C. benthamiana extract might be useful in the management of hypertension due to volume overload in the cardiovascular system.The viral component in aquatic systems clearly needs to be incorporated into future ocean and inland water climate models. Here we synthesise current knowledge on potential climate-related consequences for viral assemblages, virus-host interactions and virus functions, and in turn, viral processes contributing to climate change. There is a need to increase the accuracy of predictions of climate change impacts on virus- driven processes, particularly of those linked to biological production and biogeochemical cycles. Comprehension of the relationships between microbial/viral processes and global phenomena is essential to predict the influence on as well as the response of the biosphere to global change.

  • Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a rare cause of intracranial bleeding across all age groups, with dismal sequelae in most of the affected population.     A thorough search of the Scopus database was conducted using "intraventricular hemorrhage" as the search keyword. The 100 most cited studies were stratified in descending order. The reports were reviewed in-depth and categorized accordingly. Bibliometric parameters of interest were obtained for analysis.

    The most-cited studies had been published between 1927 and 2017. Most (n= 60) had been published between 1980 and 2000. The most-cited studies had received a total of 16,512 citations, with an average of 174 citations per report. Studies on pathogenesis were the most prolific, with 23 articles included. A total of 13 randomized controlled trials were identified. The top contributing country was the United States, with 67 reports. The leading institution was the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, with 11 studies. Pediatrics was the most active journal, with 20 studies.

    The present collection of highly cited studies can aid in the understanding of chronological trends and could serve as an efficient guide to delineate the reports involved in the evidence-based practice of the management of IVH.

    To analyze the results of microsurgery for Spetzler-Martin (SM) grade I-III AVMs and evaluate the correlation of the Lawton-Young (LY) supplementary grade, supplemented Spetzler-Martin (SM-Supp/combined) score with the functional outcome.

    A total of 42 patients with SM grade I-III AVMs who had undergone surgery at our institute during a 3-year period (June 2013 to May 2016) were included in the present study.

    All 42 patients had undergone primary surgery without previous embolization. Three patients (7.1%) had died due to surgical site hematoma in the postoperative period. One patient was lost to follow-up. The mean follow-up period for the remaining patients was 27 ± 14 months (range, 12-62 months). At the final follow-up examination of≥12 months (FFU), 92.7% of the patients had a good outcome (modified Rankin scale [mRS] score≤1), with an improved or unchanged mRS score in 87.8%. An AVM size >3 cm, diffuse AVM, SM grade III, and SM-Supp score >5 were associated with worsened mRS score at discharge and FFU. Higher LY grade (IV and V), eloquent AVM location, deep venous drainage, age >40 years, and unruptured presentation were not associated with worsened mRS score at both discharge and FFU. Of the 20 ARUBA-eligible patients, 19 (95%) had good outcomes. Postoperative angiograms for 39 patients revealed complete excision of the AVM in 37 (94.9%) and a residual AVM in 2 (5.1%).

    We report the presentation and management of 2 cases of an intradural ganglion cyst of the odontoid process. Several treatment options for ganglion cysts of the odontoid process have been reported, such as rest and use of a neck collar, posterior decompression and fusion, and transoral anterior decompression. Because our 2 cases progressed rapidly and had severe neurological symptoms, surgical treatment was performed for rapid decompression and definitive pathological diagnosis. The mass was resected as **** as possible using the lateral occipital fossa approach, and the operation was completed without dissection of the brain stem or manipulation of the syringobulbia. Postoperatively, neurological symptoms promptly improved, and the syringobulbia reduced.

    For intradural ganglion cysts with syringobulbia, we suggest relief of the compression by resection of the mass and treatment of the syringobulbia in 2 stages, if necessary, to avoid the risk of damage to the brainstem.

    National medical student surveys amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-driven subinternship cancellations have demonstrated the need for supplemental, standardized subspecialty medical education, mentorship, and career planning nationally. We have presented the first live, cross-institutional virtual medical student subspecialty training camp to deliver standardized neurosurgical educational content to medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its results on medical student anxiety and perceptions of neurosurgery.

    The online training camp used a video conferencing platform that was open to all medical students. A post-training camp survey was administered.

    A total of 305 medical students registered for the event from 107 unique U.S. medical schools. Of the 305 medical students, 108 reported intending to apply to neurosurgery residency in 2021. The top medical student objectives for the training camp were program networking and mentorship. Of the 305 participants, 121 (39.7%) completed ucation in, neurosurgery and other subspecialties.
    COVID-19-driven innovations in medical education have accelerated changes that may have long been necessary. This virtual structure improved resource usage and scalability compared with in-person training, maintained social distancing, and democratized access to standardized, specialized content not often available through traditional medical curricula. Even as a supplement to in-person events, the virtual training camp model could be implemented by national medical societies, which might significantly increase medical students' preparedness for, and education in, neurosurgery and other subspecialties.
    Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a rare cause of intracranial bleeding across all age groups, with dismal sequelae in most of the affected population. The reported data on IVH are numerous, with multiple levels of evidence. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ne-52-qq57.html We performed a citation-based analysis to identify the most-cited reports on IVH. A thorough search of the Scopus database was conducted using "intraventricular hemorrhage" as the search keyword. The 100 most cited studies were stratified in descending order. The reports were reviewed in-depth and categorized accordingly. Bibliometric parameters of interest were obtained for analysis. The most-cited studies had been published between 1927 and 2017. Most (n= 60) had been published between 1980 and 2000. The most-cited studies had received a total of 16,512 citations, with an average of 174 citations per report. Studies on pathogenesis were the most prolific, with 23 articles included. A total of 13 randomized controlled trials were identified. The top contributing country was the United States, with 67 reports. The leading institution was the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, with 11 studies. Pediatrics was the most active journal, with 20 studies. The present collection of highly cited studies can aid in the understanding of chronological trends and could serve as an efficient guide to delineate the reports involved in the evidence-based practice of the management of IVH. To analyze the results of microsurgery for Spetzler-Martin (SM) grade I-III AVMs and evaluate the correlation of the Lawton-Young (LY) supplementary grade, supplemented Spetzler-Martin (SM-Supp/combined) score with the functional outcome. A total of 42 patients with SM grade I-III AVMs who had undergone surgery at our institute during a 3-year period (June 2013 to May 2016) were included in the present study. All 42 patients had undergone primary surgery without previous embolization. Three patients (7.1%) had died due to surgical site hematoma in the postoperative period. One patient was lost to follow-up. The mean follow-up period for the remaining patients was 27 ± 14 months (range, 12-62 months). At the final follow-up examination of≥12 months (FFU), 92.7% of the patients had a good outcome (modified Rankin scale [mRS] score≤1), with an improved or unchanged mRS score in 87.8%. An AVM size >3 cm, diffuse AVM, SM grade III, and SM-Supp score >5 were associated with worsened mRS score at discharge and FFU. Higher LY grade (IV and V), eloquent AVM location, deep venous drainage, age >40 years, and unruptured presentation were not associated with worsened mRS score at both discharge and FFU.     The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network's (BCAN) Patient Survey Network established a diverse bladder cancer patient community who contribute to the prioritization of bladder cancer research topics through surveys and summits. This study describes our experience establishing an online learning program to train this population in research methods specific to bladder cancer and to subsequently engage patients in various stages of bladder cancer research.

    We created online learning modules that addressed scientific concepts related to bladder cancer, creating the patient empowerment through engagement in research (PEER) program. Bladder cancer patients and caregivers who completed the program were invited to participate in the annual BCAN Bladder Cancer Summit to develop research study concepts. We then facilitated the promoting implementation of patient engagement in research conference to identify methods of connecting patient research advocates with research teams and find ways to disseminate patient-centeredfic research training for fostering patient engagement in research. This framework can be extrapolated to facilitate patient engagement in the research of other disease processes and malignancies.Most Achilles tendon surgeries are performed with the patient in the prone position. This work describes outcomes of such locked dorsal compression plates for midfoot arthritis at a single institution. We reviewed 62 patients who underwent midfoot arthrodesis for symptomatic midfoot arthritis using locked dorsal compression plates over a 7-year period. A total of 173 joints were spanned for fusion. The primary outcome measure was radiographic union and visual analog scale pain scores. Characteristics of patients who experienced nonunion versus those who had union were evaluated. Of the 173 joints, there was a 81.5% fusion rate (141/173 joints) and 14 patients experienced nonunion. A total of 33 fellowship directors and 49 fellows responded to the survey, which was delivered over a 2-year period. Overall, fellows were generally satisfied with their respective programs, though greater satisfaction was associated with increased time allowed for research, as well as greater perceived quality of research training, clinical training, surgical training, and practice management training. When selecting a program, the 3 highest-rated factors were focus of the program, reputation of the fellowship director, and career options, and the 3 most important foot and ankle topics were hindfoot/ankle arthrodesis surgery, arthroscopy, and trauma. Open-ended responses from both fellowship directors and fellows reflected a range of opinions and recommendations, which may be helpful for future fellows or for fellowship program faculty. Notably, both fellowship directors and fellows commonly reported that the application process was in need of improvement, with increased standardization of the application process suggested. We then facilitated the promoting implementation of patient engagement in research conference to identify methods of connecting patient research advocates with research teams and find ways to disseminate patient-centeredfic research training for fostering patient engagement in research. Several companies have developed diamond-shaped locked dorsal compression plates, which allow for longitudinal joint compression. This work describes outcomes of such locked dorsal compression plates for midfoot arthritis at a single institution. We reviewed 62 patients who underwent midfoot arthrodesis for symptomatic midfoot arthritis using locked dorsal compression plates over a 7-year period. A total of 173 joints were spanned for fusion. The primary outcome measure was radiographic union and visual analog scale pain scores. Characteristics of patients who experienced nonunion versus those who had union were evaluated. Nonetheless, there has been a lack of formal characterization of fellowship training in the field. The present study aimed to characterize fellowship training through an online survey. Two separate surveys were created, 1 for fellowship directors and 1 for fellows. Fellowship directors and fellows were asked questions pertaining to daily responsibilities, quality of training, work-life balance, the application process, fellow selection, and program selection. A total of 33 fellowship directors and 49 fellows responded to the survey, which was delivered over a 2-year period. Overall, fellows were generally satisfied with their respective programs, though greater satisfaction was associated with increased time allowed for research, as well as greater perceived quality of research training, clinical training, surgical training, and practice management training. When selecting a program, the 3 highest-rated factors were focus of the program, reputation of the fellowship director, and career options, and the 3 most important foot and ankle topics were hindfoot/ankle arthrodesis surgery, arthroscopy, and trauma. Open-ended responses from both fellowship directors and fellows reflected a range of opinions and recommendations, which may be helpful for future fellows or for fellowship program faculty. Notably, both fellowship directors and fellows commonly reported that the application process was in need of improvement, with increased standardization of the application process suggested. The results of the present study reflect baseline data on the topic, and may help facilitate improvement of the fellowship experience.

Here, we asked whether variation in lesion topography affects these two movements similarly or distinctly and whether lesion impact is similar or distinct for left and right hemisphere damage. Lesion effects were analyzed separately for left and right hemispheric damage patient groups, using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping. In the left hemispheric damage group, shoulder abduction and finger extension were affected only by damage to the corticospinal tract in its passage through the corona radiata. In contrast, following the right hemispheric damage, these two movements were affected not only by corticospinal tract damage but also by damage to white matter association tracts, the putamen, and the insular cortex. In both groups, voxel clusters have been found where damage affected shoulder abduction and also finger extension, along with voxels where damage affected only one of the two movements. The capacity to execute shoulder abduction and finger extension movements following stroke is affected significantly by damage to shared and distinct voxels in the corticospinal tract in left-hemispheric damage patients and by damage to shared and distinct voxels in a larger array of cortical and subcortical regions in right hemispheric damage patients.Music-based interventions (MBI) have become increasingly widely adopted for dementia and related disorders. AD individuals were lower in both within-network and between-network functional connectivity in the auditory network and reward networks compared to MCI and controls. Furthermore, graph theory analyses showed that the MCI group had higher clustering and local efficiency than both AD and control groups, whereas AD individuals had lower betweenness centrality than MCI and control groups. Together, the auditory and reward systems show preserved within- and between-network connectivity in MCI individuals relative to AD. Nineteen ESRD patients on regular hemodialysis were included in this study. Eighteen age-, sex- and education level-matched volunteers were enrolled as the healthy control group. All participants had resting-state functional MRI scanning, neuropsychological tests, and laboratory testing. ALFF was used for assessing intrinsic brain activity. Independent samples t-test was used for obtaining group differences. Spearman correlation analysis was applied to assess the association between ALFF changes, neuropsychological, and clinical indices. Compared to the healthy control group, hemodialysis patients showed decreased ALFF in the precuneus, right angular gyrus/inferior lobule as well as increased ALFF in the left parahippocampus/hippocampus and right precentral/postcentral gyrus. The ALFF abnormalities in these regions were closely associated with hemoglobin levels. Also, increased ALFF in the left parahippocampus/hippocampus showed a negative correlation with the score of long-delayed free recall. Hemodialysis patients had aberrant ALFF in the default mode network (DMN) regions, particularly in the precuneus and parahippocampus/hippocampus, which may be correlated with neuropathological mechanisms involved in hemodialysis.Deceptive behavior, and the evaluation of others' behavior as truthful or deceptive, are crucial aspects of human social interaction.     The existence of shoulder abduction and finger extension movement capacity shortly after stroke onset is an important prognostic factor, indicating favorable functional outcomes for the hemiparetic upper limb (HUL). Here, we asked whether variation in lesion topography affects these two movements similarly or distinctly and whether lesion impact is similar or distinct for left and right hemisphere damage. Shoulder abduction and finger extension movements were examined in 77 chronic post-stroke patients using relevant items of the Fugl-Meyer test. Lesion effects were analyzed separately for left and right hemispheric damage patient groups, using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping. In the left hemispheric damage group, shoulder abduction and finger extension were affected only by damage to the corticospinal tract in its passage through the corona radiata. In contrast, following the right hemispheric damage, these two movements were affected not only by corticospinal tract damage but also by damage to white matter association tracts, the putamen, and the insular cortex. In both groups, voxel clusters have been found where damage affected shoulder abduction and also finger extension, along with voxels where damage affected only one of the two movements.   • Lysine crotonylation (Kcr) is a histone post-translational modification that is implicated in numerous epigenetic pathways and diseases. Recognition of Kcr by YEATS domains has been proposed to occur through intermolecular amide-π and alkene-π interactions, but little is known about the driving force of these key interactions. Herein, we probed the recognition of lysine crotonylation and acetylation by the AF9 YEATS domain through incorporation of noncanonical Phe analogs with distinct electrostatics at two positions. We found that amide-π interactions between AF9 and acyllysines are electrostatically tunable, with electron-rich rings providing more favorable interactions. This differs from trends in amide-heteroarene interactions and provides insightful information for therapeutic design. Additionally, we report for the first time that CH-π interactions at Phe28 directly contribute to AF9's recognition of acyllysines, illuminating differences among YEATS domains, as this residue is not highly conserved but has been shown to impart selectivity for specific post-translational modification.Broad-spectrum antivirals are powerful weapons against dangerous viruses where no specific therapy exists, as in the case of the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The foreign body was removed laparoscopically in one piece and was identified as a 3-cm-long fish bone. The patient recovered without complications and was discharged on the 4th postoperative day. Pancreatic foreign body is a rare entity and laparoscopic removal is warranted in majority of cases.A 54-year-old female presented with a six year history of increasing abdominal swelling and discomfort and two months of intermittent constipation and difficulty with micturition. She was referred from the gynecological service having been investigated for a pelvic pathology without any positive findings. Her medical history was otherwise unremarkable. Physical examination revealed a non-tender intra-abdominal mass extending from epigastrium to the pelvis with a smooth surface. A large intra-abdominal multi-loculated cyst, separate from the ovaries, was seen on imaging. At laparotomy, the cystic tumour was discovered to arise from the mesentery of the terminal ileum and was resected en bloc. Histopathology revealed the tumour to be a benign mucinous cystadenoma, possibly of ovarian origin. This report aims to raise awareness of the difficulty of distinguishing ovarian from extra-ovarian mucinous cystadenomas on histopathological examination alone.The effect of air-borne nanoparticles (NPs) on human health is an active area of research, with clinical relevance evidenced by the current COVID-19 pandemic. To complement ongoing experimental work, we carried out finite-element simulations of the deposition of NPs on the epithelial layer of a well-established LOAC design. We solved the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid flow in a three-dimensional domain and studied the particle transport using Eulerian advection-diffusion for fine NPs and Lagrangian particle tracking for coarse NPs. Using Langmuir and Frumkin kinetics for surface adsorption and desorption, we investigated NP adsorption under different exercise and breath-holding patterns. Conditions mimicking physical exercise, through changes in air-flow volume and breathing frequency, enhance particle deposition. Puff profiles typical of smoking, with breath-holding between inhalation and exhalation, also increase particle deposition per breathing cycle. Lagrangian particle tracking shows Brownian motion and gravitational settling to be two key factors, which may cooperate or compete with each other for different particle sizes. Comparisons are made with experimental data where possible and they show qualitative and semi-quantitative agreement. These results suggest that computer simulations can potentially inform and accelerate the design and application of LOAC devices for analyzing particulate- and microbe-alveolar interactions.
    vegetables form a major component of the human diet. However, poor agronomic practices may put consumers at risk of parasitic infections. This study evaluated the parasitic contamination of vegetables grown in selected farms in Ibadan, Nigeria. Two hundred and eighty vegetable species African eggplant ( ), lettuce ( ), cucumber ( ), spinach ( ), white jute ( ), pumpkin ( ), green pepper ( .), okro ( ), quill grass ( ), tomato ( ) were collected from farms within Ibadan. Samples were washed in water, and the resulting washing solution was filtered and centrifuged to concentrate the parasitic stages. Sediments were examined by iodine and modified Ziehl-Neelsen stained smears technique. parasites were detected in 14 (5.0%, 95% CI 32.6%-67.3%) of samples. The highest contaminated vegetable was white jute 32.1 (95% CI 17.9%-50.6%), followed by pumpkin 7.1(95% CI 1.9-22.6), quill grass 7.1% (95% CI 1.9-22.6) and lettuce 3.5 (95% CI 0.6-17.7). We here report a clinical case of malignant vulvar melanoma in a 72-year-old postmenopausal woman. Partial hemivulvectomy and bilateral superficial inguinal lymphadenectomy were performed. We report herein the case of a 59-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with epigastric pain and fever. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a linear foreign body that perforate the posterior wall of the prepyloric region of the stomach. The foreign body was removed laparoscopically in one piece and was identified as a 3-cm-long fish bone. The patient recovered without complications and was discharged on the 4th postoperative day. Pancreatic foreign body is a rare entity and laparoscopic removal is warranted in majority of cases.A 54-year-old female presented with a six year history of increasing abdominal swelling and discomfort and two months of intermittent constipation and difficulty with micturition. She was referred from the gynecological service having been investigated for a pelvic pathology without any positive findings. Her medical history was otherwise unremarkable. Physical examination revealed a non-tender intra-abdominal mass extending from epigastrium to the pelvis with a smooth surface. A large intra-abdominal multi-loculated cyst, separate from the ovaries, was seen on imaging. At laparotomy, the cystic tumour was discovered to arise from the mesentery of the terminal ileum and was resected en bloc. Histopathology revealed the tumour to be a benign mucinous cystadenoma, possibly of ovarian origin.   • Since many offenders would presumably be committing less serious crimes in a non-pandemic world, we raise attention to the possibility that mandatory lockdown orders may have taken minor offenders and placed them into situations where there is rampant opportunity for intimate partner violence, serious batteries, and homicides. While crime in the U.S. appears to be down overall, this good news should not blind us to a troubling co-occurring reality - a reality that paints a dim picture of unintended consequences to public health and criminal justice finances as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns.The COVID-19 pandemic created social upheaval and altered norms for all members of society, but its effects on first responders have been particularly profound. Law enforcement officers have been expected to coordinate local shutdowns, encourage social distancing, and enforce stay-at-home mandates all while completing the responsibilities for which they are already understaffed and underfunded. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on officer stress, mental health, resiliency, and misconduct is explored drawing insight from reactions to the HIV epidemic over two decades earlier and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. COVID-19 policing is hypothesized to serve as a significant stressor for officers and compound the general and organizational stress associated with the occupation. Avenues for providing officer support are discussed and recommendations for research into the phenomenon presented.An early examination of the impact of COVID-19 on juvenile delinquency and juvenile justice in America, this review provides initial scholarship to rapidly evolving areas of research. Our appraisals of these topics are made after nearly 2 months of national COVID-19 mitigation measures, like social distancing and limited "non-essential" movement outside the home but also as states are gradually lifting stricter directives and reopening economic sectors. We consider the impact of these pandemic-related changes on twenty-first century youths, their behaviors, and their separate justice system. To forecast the immediate future, we draw from decades of research on juvenile delinquency and the justice system, as well as from reported patterns of reactions and responses to an unprecedented and ongoing situation. This paper focuses on the incarcerated individuals and how the coronavirus has added a new and unprecedented threat to correctional facilities that are already overcrowded and ill-equipped to identify and address the medical needs of the inmate population. The risk-need-responsivity model (RNR) should be used to make empirically-informed decisions about the targeted release. The identification and release of inmates who pose the least threat to society will help alleviate some of the burdens associated with prison crowding. Specifically, with fewer inmates, correctional facilities can comply with social distancing guidelines, introduce enhanced cleaning measures, and make necessary institutional adjustments. These correctional facilities and communities were especially underprepared for the sudden onset of a highly contagious virus, which has resulted in an exceedingly high number of infections among those who work and are held in the facilities. Rampant overcrowding in the U.S. correctional system, an aging population, and a population exhibiting high rates of underlying health conditions are highly likely to exacerbate the spread of this highly contagious virus. This potentially dire set of interrelated circumstances necessitates rapid decarceration measures that effectively balance public safety and public health. Unfortunately, there has been unclear guidance as well as changing and even contradictory information coming from the federal government concerning rapid measures to mitigate the spread of infection to justice system personnel and federal prisoners. In this paper we summarize the federal response and how it has impacted those responsible for implementation. Furthermore, we discuss how systemic deleterious conditions of the U.S. correctional system serve as both accelerants to as well as effects of the pandemic. We end highlighting critical issues relating to early release due to COVID-19 that will necessitate future research.The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has impacted the world in ways not seen in generations. Initial evidence suggests one of the effects is crime rates, which appear to have fallen drastically in many communities around the world. We argue that the principal reason for the change is the government ordered stay-at-home orders, which impacted the routine activities of entire populations. Because these orders impacted countries, states, and communities at different times and in different ways, a naturally occurring, quasi-randomized control experiment has unfolded, allowing the testing of criminological theories as never before. Using new and traditional data sources made available as a result of the pandemic criminologists are equipped to study crime in society as never before. We encourage researchers to study specific types of crime, in a temporal fashion (following the stay-at-home orders), and placed-based. The results will reveal not only why, where, when, and to what extent crime changed, but also how to influence future crime reduction.
