In this study, we assess the climate resilience of Themeda triandra, a foundational species and the most widespread plant in Australia, by assessing the relative contributions of spatial, environmental and ploidy factors to contemporary genomic variation. Reduced-representation genome sequencing on 472 samples from 52 locations was used to test how the distribution of genomic variation, including ploidy polymorphism, supports adaptation to hotter and drier climates. We explicitly quantified isolation by distance (IBD) and isolation by environment (IBE) and predicted genomic vulnerability of populations to future climates based on expected deviation from current genomic composition. We found that a majority (54%) of genomic variation could be attributed to IBD, while an additional 22% (27% when including ploidy information) could be explained by two temperature and two precipitation climate variables demonstrating IBE. Ploidy polymorphisms were common within populations (31/52 populations), indicating that ploidy mixing is characteristic of T. triandra populations. Genomic vulnerabilities were found to be heterogeneously distributed throughout the landscape, and our analysis suggested that ploidy polymorphism, along with other factors linked to polyploidy, reduced vulnerability to future climates by 60% (0.25-0.10). Our data suggests that polyploidy may facilitate adaptation to hotter climates and highlight the importance of incorporating ploidy in adaptive management strategies to promote the resilience of this and other foundation species.

    Patient involvement in health research is an integral part of health care in many countries. It promotes the relevance and quality of research and increases the meaningfulness of research results. Meanwhile, the value of patient involvement has also been recognised in Germany. The lack of a common understanding of patient involvement and appropriate methods make implementation difficult. The present project aims to test the method of patient advisory boards for the involvement of nursing hndividual interviews.

    The study will provide a potentially suitable method to involve nursing home residents in the research process. The jointly developed study design will be incorporated into a new project proposal. The results will be used to inform the development of a German handbook on active public and patient involvement.

New current research areas could be implemented in the clinic in the near future. In this review in the form of several interviews, various promising themes for our specialty are described such as the gut microbiota, tumor organoids (or avatar), artificial intelligence, connected therapies, nanotechnologies and plasma laser. The individual prediction of the best therapeutic index combined with the integration of new technologies will ideally allow highly personalized treatment of patients receiving radiation therapy.In 2019, the scientific committee of the French society of radiation oncology (SFRO) created an ethics committee. Its mission is to provide our professional community with food for thought on ethical issues, and to identify its specificities within the radiation oncology departments. For the 2020 annual conference, the commission looked into the evolution of the patient-carer relationship, and more particularly to the strong idea of patient partnership. Indeed, the writing of the White Book of Cancer gave voice to sick people and stressed the need for new devices, such as the Caregiving Time. Patients can no longer be considered as objects of care but as people whose dignity and autonomy must be imperatively respected. The acquisition of knowledge allows a bilateral exchange, prerequisite of a dynamic collaboration. Patients can be partners in their own care, partners in training and research (expert patient), but also partners in health institutions and policies. It is this notion of partnership and involvement of the person in their path of care in radiation oncology that we will analyse here. It will be about defining it, by developing the concept of autonomy, and bringing out its complexity and ambivalence through two examples from our clinical practice the shared decision-making process for patients with localized prostate cancer and the patient's involvement in the success of his radiotherapy.Multimodal imaging has become a standard for planning radiation therapy via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or positron emission tomography (PET) in many cancers. However, its use is now old, and its impact has not been **** discussed in light of technological improvements in imaging and advances in radiotherapy. However, in 20 years, the exclusive functional imaging has been replaced by hybrid imaging (functional and anatomical) with successive improvements (flight time, detector modifications, digitisation, etc.) have enabled us to go from centimetric resolution to the current 3 to 4mm resolution. This article will specifically review PET technology, its latest advances and the potential impact on radiotherapy, particularly head and neck cancers.Continuous improvements have been made in the way to prescribe, record and report dose distributions since the therapeutic use of ionizing radiations. The international commission for radiation units and measurement (ICRU) has provided a common language for physicians and physicists to plan and evaluate their treatments. The PTV concept has been used for more than two decades but is becoming obsolete as the CTV-to-PTV margin creates a static dose cloud that does not properly recapitulate all planning vs. delivery uncertainties. The robust optimization concept has recently emerged to overcome the limitations of the PTV concept. This concept is integrated in the inverse planning process and minimizes deviations to planned dose distribution through integration of uncertainties in the planning objectives. It appears critical to account for the uncertainties that are specific to protons and should be accounted for to better exploit the clinical potential of proton therapy. It may also improve treatment quality particularly in hypofractionated photon plans of mobile tumors and more widely to photon radiotherapy. However, in contrast to the PTV concept, a posteriori evaluation of plan quality, called robust evaluation, using error-based scenarios is still warranted. Robust optimization metrics are warranted. These metrics are necessary to compare PTV-based photon and robustly optimized proton plans in general and in model-based NTCP approaches. Assessment of computational demand and approximations of robust optimization algorithms along with metrics to evaluate plan quality are needed but a step further to better prescribe radiotherapy may has been achieved.

In particle-based Monte Carlo simulations, based on experimental data of molecular diffusion and organization, crowding enhanced the receptor-scaffold interaction but reduced the capture of new molecules. Based on NMR experiments and extensive molecular dynamics simulations on the hundred microsecond timescale we demonstrate that, for isolated glycopeptides and denatured RNase 2, the C-linked mannopyranosyl residue exists as an ensemble of conformations, among which 1C4 is the most abundant. However, for native RNase 2, molecular dynamics and NMR studies revealed that the mannopyranosyl residue favors a specific conformation, which optimally stabilizes the protein fold through a network of hydrogen bonds and which leads to a significant reduction of the protein dynamics on the microsecond timescale. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the biological role of C-mannosylation.
    Osteoporosis (OP) is a common inflammatory disease. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of IL-1R1 and IL-1RN polymorphisms on OP predisposition among the Chinese Han population.

    Six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL-1R1 and IL-1RN were genotyped using the Agena MassARRAY platform in 594 OP patients and 599 age- and sex- matched healthy controls. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis was used to analyze SNP-SNP interaction. The correlations of genotypes with clinical variables were evaluated using analysis of covariance (ANOVA).

    Overall, IL-1R1 rs3917225 (OR=1.40, 95% CI 1.10-1.80, p=0.007) was associated with a higher risk for OP, while IL-1RN rs17042888 (OR=0.55, 95% CI 0.34-0.90, p=0.016) was associated with a lower risk. Specifically, the risk association between these polymorphisms and OP risk might be related to age, sex and BMI. Furthermore, rs10490571, rs17042888, rs3181052 and rs452204 were associated with the T scores of the lumbar spine or total hip.

  • We report an anomalous photoinduced reconstructing and dark self-healing process on Bi2O2S nanoplates by monitoring the time profile of open-circuit potential (OCP). When the light was switched on and off on the nanoplates, we observed pronounced and repeatable decrement-recovery cycles of the OCP signal, which are inexplicable by a rapid electron-hole separation-recombination process only as in a conventional semiconductor. It is proposed that upon irradiation, accumulation of photogenerated holes at the electrode surface caused oxidation of the S layers of Bi2O2S nanoplates into certain intermediates, which, when the light was turned off, were then reduced **** to the original state by the electron **** flow. Raman scattering spectroscopy provided te S-S vibrational signature of the intermediate, evidencing the hole oxidative dimerization of the S2- species and the inverse reductive S-S dissociation process. The photophysics and photochemistry of semiconductor nanoplates reported here may inspire the development of energy devices, switches, and memristors.A monolith bonding system has a high reliability for dissimilar material bonding. In this study, silane and phosphine coupling agents containing amino and epoxy groups were used to construct a robust interfacial structure between the monolith and the substrates such as glass and metals. The internal and interfacial monolith structures were characterized by three-dimensional X-ray imaging as a nondestructive observation method in addition to the scanning electron microscopy of the sample cross sections. The modification of the substrate-monolith interface using the coupling agents improved the strength of dissimilar material bonding of the glass and metal substrates in combination with thermoplastic resins such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polycarbonate bisphenol-A.Polluted water is a worldwide problem; therefore, effective separation of oil/water and removal of dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals in wastewater are the need of the hour. Herein, hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol, and chitosan were used as main raw materials to construct a multifunctional aerogel framework by simple sol-gel and directional freeze-drying methods. Featuring intrinsic superamphiphilic wettability in air, robust superoleophobic wettability underwater, and excellent shape-recovery characteristics, the biomass-derived aerogel presents durable oil/water separation even after 10 cycles. The aerogels possess prominent adsorption capacity for methyl blue, 1-naphthylamine, and Cu2+, which was as high as 121.55 mg/g, 33.96 mg/g, and 122.6 mg/g, respectively. In addition, various pollutant mixtures could be effectively adsorbed by the aerogel at the same time with the adsorption capacity of 121.75 mg/g for methyl blue, 0.97 mg/g for bisphenol A, and 20.11 mg/g for Cu2+.The new alkaloids marinacarbolines E-Q (1-10, 12-14), caerulomycin N (15), and actinoallonaphthyridine A (16), together with the known marinacarboline C (11) and cyanogramide (17), were isolated from the actinomycete Actinoalloteichus sp. ZZ1866. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on their HRESIMS data, extensive NMR spectroscopic analyses, Mosher's method, ECD calculations, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and chemical degradation studies. Marinacarbolines E-L (1-8) share an indole-pyridone-imidazole tetracyclic skeleton, which is the first example of this kind of skeleton. Furthermore, to clarify the applicability of the transition density descriptor in molecular design for small-reorganization energy molecules, we investigate a broad range of molecular chromophores to show the effectiveness of the proposed theory. With this perspective on the relationship between reorganization energy and transition density, we successfully provide a quantitative rule to identify π-conjugated systems with small reorganization energy in the excited state, which should be useful for the development of novel optoelectronic materials.Intermolecular crowding of densely tethered polymers promotes chain extension and anisotropy that induces many unique properties. Excessive AMPAR activation leads to diseases such as epilepsy. AMPAR properties are modulated by auxiliary proteins and foremost by the transmembrane AMPAR regulatory proteins (TARPs). These distribute in unique expression patterns across the brain, rendering AMPAR/TARP complexes promising targets for region-specific therapeutic intervention. TARP γ8 is predominantly expressed in the forebrain and is enriched in the hippocampus, a region associated with temporal lobe epilepsy. Recent high-throughput medicinal chemistry screens have identified multiple promising compounds that selectively target AMPARs associated with γ8 and hold promise for epilepsy treatment. However, how these modulators target the receptor complex is currently unknown. Here, we use a combination of ligand docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and electrophysiology to address this question. We identify a conserved oxindole isostere, shared between three structurally diverse modulators (LY-3130481, JNJ-55511118, and JNJ-61432059) as the major module engaging γ8 by an H-bond to Asn-172 (γ8). The remaining variable region of each molecule likely targets the receptor complex in ligand-selective modes. Functional data reveal parallels in the underlying modulatory action of two prominent compounds. This work will aid development of refined AMPAR epilepsy therapeutics and facilitate to uncover the mechanisms by which TARPs modulate the receptor.Progranulin (PGRN) is an autocrine growth factor that exerts crucial roles within cartilage tissue; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying PGRN-mediated cartilage homeostasis remain elusive. In the present study, we investigated the role of PGRN in regulating chondrocyte homeostasis and its therapeutic potential for managing osteoarthritis (OA). We found that PGRN levels are significantly increased in human cartilage in mild OA and that its expression is decreased in the cartilage in severe OA. In vitro, treatment of primary rat chondrocytes with recombinant PGRN significantly enhanced the levels of collagen type II α 1 chain (COL2A1) and aggrecan, and attenuated TNFα-induced up-regulation of matrix metallopeptidase 13 (MMP13) and ADAM metallopeptidase with thrombospondin type 1 motif 5 (ADAMTS5) in chondrocytes. These effects were abrogated in SIRT1-/- cells, indicating a causative role of SIRT1 in the effects of PGRN on protein expression in chondrocytes. Mechanistically, PGRN increased SIRT1 expression and activity, which reduced the acetylation levels of SRY-box transcription factor (SOX9) and transcription factor P65 (P65) and thereby promoted nuclear translocation of SOX9 and inhibited TNFα-induced P65 nuclear accumulation to maintain chondrocyte homeostasis. Recent high-throughput medicinal chemistry screens have identified multiple promising compounds that selectively target AMPARs associated with γ8 and hold promise for epilepsy treatment. However, how these modulators target the receptor complex is currently unknown. Here, we use a combination of ligand docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and electrophysiology to address this question. We identify a conserved oxindole isostere, shared between three structurally diverse modulators (LY-3130481, JNJ-55511118, and JNJ-61432059) as the major module engaging γ8 by an H-bond to Asn-172 (γ8). The remaining variable region of each molecule likely targets the receptor complex in ligand-selective modes. Functional data reveal parallels in the underlying modulatory action of two prominent compounds. In the present study, we investigated the role of PGRN in regulating chondrocyte homeostasis and its therapeutic potential for managing osteoarthritis (OA). We found that PGRN levels are significantly increased in human cartilage in mild OA and that its expression is decreased in the cartilage in severe OA. In vitro, treatment of primary rat chondrocytes with recombinant PGRN significantly enhanced the levels of collagen type II α 1 chain (COL2A1) and aggrecan, and attenuated TNFα-induced up-regulation of matrix metallopeptidase 13 (MMP13) and ADAM metallopeptidase with thrombospondin type 1 motif 5 (ADAMTS5) in chondrocytes. These effects were abrogated in SIRT1-/- cells, indicating a causative role of SIRT1 in the effects of PGRN on protein expression in chondrocytes. Mechanistically, PGRN increased SIRT1 expression and activity, which reduced the acetylation levels of SRY-box transcription factor (SOX9) and transcription factor P65 (P65) and thereby promoted nuclear translocation of SOX9 and inhibited TNFα-induced P65 nuclear accumulation to maintain chondrocyte homeostasis. Pediatric patients with SS report fewer sicca symptoms; therefore, many are under-diagnosed and cannot access appropriate medical management. Therefore, we propose a newly developed guidance for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of pediatric SS, including epidemiology, clinical features, and diagnostic examination methodology. The aim of this guidance was to standardize the medical care of pediatric SS in Japan, and we published the Japanese version by YODOSHA in 2018. This article is the English version, which is summarized and updated. This guidance will need to be revised in the near future as additional clinical data become available.

    A network meta-analysis was performed to assess the efficacy/safety impact of triple ICS/LABA/LAMA FDC compared with dual LABA/LAMA and ICS/LBA FDCs administered via the same inhaler device in COPD patients. The nucleus is considered the compartment most sensitive to high LET particles. Therefore, the use of AE emitters could be most useful in specific recognition of a cancer cell and delivery of AE emitters into its nucleus.

    This review describes the studies aimed at developing effective anticancer agents for the delivery of AE emitters to the nuclei of target cancer cells. The use of peptide-based conjugates, nanoparticles, recombinant proteins, and other constructs for AE emitter targeted intranuclear delivery as well as their advantages and limitations are discussed.

They tend to polymerize rapidly into rigid structures when exposed to trace amounts of moisture. Transforming cyanoacrylate monomers into transparent polymeric films or coatings can open up several new applications, as they are biocompatible, biodegradable and have surgical uses. Like other acrylics, cyanoacrylate polymers are glassy and rigid. To circumvent this, we prepared transparent cyanoacrylate films by solvent casting from a readily biodegrade solvent, cyclopentanone. To improve the ductility of the films, poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) biopolymer was used as an additive (maximum 5 wt.%) while maintaining transparency. Additionally, ductile films were functionalized with caffeic acid (maximum 2 wt.%), with no loss of transparency while establishing highly effective double functionality, i.e., antioxidant effect and effective UV-absorbing capability. Less than 25 mg antioxidant caffeic acid release per gram film was achieved within a 24-h period, conforming to food safety regulations. Within 2 h, films achieved 100% radical inhibition levels. Films displayed zero UVC (100-280 nm) and UVB (280-315 nm), and ~15% UVA (315-400 nm) radiation transmittance comparable to advanced sunscreen materials containing ZnO nanoparticles or quantum dots. Transparent films also exhibited promising water vapor and oxygen barrier properties, outperforming low-density polyethylene (LPDE) films. Several potential applications can be envisioned such as films for fatty food preservation, biofilms for sun screening, and biomedical films for free-radical inhibition.Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered as a potential material for storing hydrogen, but its practical application is still hindered by the kinetic and thermodynamic obstacles. Herein, Mn-based catalysts (MnCl2 and Mn) are adopted and doped into MgH2 to improve its hydrogen storage performance. The onset dehydrogenation temperatures of MnCl2 and submicron-Mn-doped MgH2 are reduced to 225 °C and 183 °C, while the un-doped MgH2 starts to release hydrogen at 315 °C. Further study reveals that 10 wt% of Mn is the better doping amount and the MgH2 + 10 wt% submicron-Mn composite can quickly release 6.6 wt% hydrogen in 8 min at 300 °C. For hydrogenation, the completely dehydrogenated composite starts to absorb hydrogen even at room temperature and almost 3.0 wt% H2 can be rehydrogenated in 30 min under 3 MPa hydrogen at 100 °C. Additionally, the activation energy of hydrogenation reaction for the modified MgH2 composite significantly decreases to 17.3 ± 0.4 kJ/mol, which is **** lower than that of the primitive MgH2. Mathematical modeling has been extensively applied to unravel the regulatory mechanisms of this process. In this study, we aimed to investigate DNA methylation by performing a high-depth analysis of particular loci, and by subsequent modeling of the experimental results. In particular, we performed an in-deep DNA methylation profiling of two genomic loci surrounding the transcription start site of the D-Aspartate Oxidase and the D-Serine Oxidase genes in different samples (n = 51). We found evidence of cell-to-cell differences in DNA methylation status. However, these cell differences were maintained between different individuals, which indeed showed very similar DNA methylation profiles. Therefore, we hypothesized that the observed pattern of DNA methylation was the result of a dynamic balance between DNA methylation and demethylation, and that this balance was identical between individuals. We hence developed a simple mathematical model to test this hypothesis. Our model reliably captured the characteristics of the experimental data, suggesting that DNA methylation and demethylation work together in determining the methylation state of a locus. We found evidence of cell-to-cell differences in DNA methylation status. Our model reliably captured the characteristics of the experimental data, suggesting that DNA methylation and demethylation work together in determining the methylation state of a locus. In accordance with the Bloom Taxonomy, 834 learning objectives were created for a total of 90 lectures (18 lectures for each PGY year). Totally 90 videos were shot by specialised instructors and webcasts were prepared. Webcasts were posted at uropedia.com.tr, which is the web library of the Society of Urological Surgery. The satisfaction of residents and instructors was evaluated with feedbacks. An assessment of knowledge was measured with the multiple-choice exam.

    Many people with new-onset focal epilepsy initially seek evaluation in emergency departments (EDs), and treatment decisions in EDs can influence likelihood of seizure recurrence. Using data collected for the Human Epilepsy Project (HEP), we assessed the effect of clinical seizure characteristics on ED clinical management.

    There were 447 participants with new-onset focal epilepsy seen within 4months of treatment initiation who were eligible and enrolled in HEP. Seizure calendars and medical records were collected. Based on clinical descriptions, seizures were categorized by semiology according to International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) classifications as either focal nonmotor or focal motor seizures.

    Overall, 279 of 447(62%) of participants had presented to an ED prior to or at time of epilepsy diagnosis. A total of 132 of 246 (53%) with initial nonmotor seizures presented to an ED. Of these, eight (6%) presented with a first-lifetime nonmotor seizure. The other 124 (94%) presented after multiple setion, and treatment in ED settings.
    This study contributes to evidence of underrecognition of nonmotor focal seizure semiologies in ED settings, which can support large-scale interventions aimed at improving recognition, specialist consultation, and treatment in ED settings.
    To report a series of benign ovarian seromucinous neoplasms, an uncommon and hitherto poorly described category of tumours included in the current 2014 World Health Organisation classification of tumours of the female reproductive organs.

    We report the clinicopathological features of a series of 22 benign ovarian seromucinous neoplasms (cystadenomas and adenofibromas or admixtures). The neoplasms occurred in patients aged 32-83years (mean=62, median=65.5) and involved the left ovary (n=14), the right ovary (n=6) or both ovaries (n=2). There was a common association with endometrioid elements (endometrioid differentiation within the cystadenoma/adenofibroma and/or endometriosis) and other endometriosis-associated neoplasms.

    To evaluate the clinical outcomes of using RDT paired with well-defined pharmacist-directed antimicrobial stewardship programme (ASP) guidance to achieve targeted treatment in patients with bacteraemia.

    In this quasi-study, a retrospective (pre-intervention) phase was compared with a prospective (post-intervention) phase. Adult patients with positive blood cultures identified using the ****/ALERT system were included. Bacterial identification and susceptibility were provided by VITEK 2. During the post-intervention phase, Verigene ASP guidance was developed to optimize antibiotic selection. Pharmacists received the results from the microbiology laboratory, evaluated the appropriateness of current therapy (if any), and communicated the recommended antimicrobial therapy to the treating physician accordingly.

    The cohort consisted of 164 patients in the pre-intervention group and 148 patients in the post-intervality and re-admission.
    Pandrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (PDRAB) is increasingly being reported as a nosocomial pathogen worldwide, but determining its clinical impact is challenging.

    To assess the spectrum of excess mortality attributable to PDRAB infection in acute care settings.

    This four-year cohort study was conducted in a tertiary-care referral hospital in Greece to estimate excess in-hospital mortality due to PDRAB infection by comparing patients infected to those colonized with PDRAB by means of competing risks survival analysis.

    The study cohort comprised 91 patients (median age 67 years; 77% men). For most patients, PDRAB was first isolated in the intensive care unit (ICU) (N= 51; 57%) or following ICU discharge (N= 26; 29%). Overall in-hospital mortality was 68% (95% confidence interval (CI) 57.5-77.5%). PDRAB-infected patients (N= 62; 68%) and PDRAB-colonized patients (N= 29; 32%) had similar baseline characteristics, but the absolute excess risk of 30-day mortality in infected patients compared to colonhealthcare-associated transmission of PDRAB is ever more important.In an era marked by accelerating change and destabilisation of many structures and regularities in almost all domains, it becomes crucial to understand the source and nature of the unfolding crises and their relation to social dynamics. In this paper the evolution of social dynamics is investigated not on the basis of observable structures, but the mental model of human agents, that is, how they both perceive and conceive of the world and their relation to it. For this purpose, the paper reaches out to Ancient Mesopotamia, where the oldest written documents provide evidence about the evolution of the mental model as it has been preserved in the form of myths. Some key notions filtered out from some important myths are used to analyse the interaction between the mental model and social dynamics. Finally, some criteria and directions are suggested for the present-day crises.Autocatalytic sets are sets of entities that mutually catalyse each other's production through chemical reactions from a basic food source. Recently, the reflexively autocatalytic and food generated theory has introduced a formal definition of autocatalytic sets which has provided promising results in the context of the origin of life. In this work, we study how different interactions among autocatalytic sets affect the emergent dynamics. To this aim, we develop a model in which interactions are presented through composition operations among networks, and the dynamics of the networks is reproduced via stochastic simulations. We find that the dynamical emergence of the autocatalytic sets depends on the adopted composition operations. Sociodemographic, clinical and epidemiological information was collected by using the infectious disease monitoring database, hospital discharge, deprivation index and long term care facility databases.

    In the period after the publication of the decree, there were more elderly, females, strangers, retired, residents in nursing homes and deprived people than in the first period. There were also more health care personnel and less professionals/managers, sales or office workers. In both phases, family is mentioned as the first community attended although less frequently in the second group.

We describe the case of a 21-month-old girl that was found dead in a farmyard next to a donkey that belonged to the family. Examination of the body showed bite marks on the right side of the neck and the upper part of the shoulder. Death was attributed to cervical trauma and spine injuries from a donkey attack.A 69-year-old man was found lying on the floor at his home address. According to the police report every room was filled with refuse and "thirty or so cats" were resident in the house. The body showed signs of extensive post mortem animal predation with opening of the chest and abdominal cavities, loss of soft tissues of the face, loss of soft tissues and organs of the neck, loss of the lungs and heart, and injuries to the liver, right kidney, stomach, transverse colon and cecum. The cause of death could not be determined from the autopsy given the absence of certain vital organs such as the heart and lungs, and the presence of early putrefaction. The case shows that considerable soft tissue, bone and organ loss may occur when a number of animals work in concert. The collective term for such a group of cats is a clowder. The extent of post-mortem damage from animal activity therefore relies not only on the species involved, but also the numbers of participating animals.The semicircular ducts (SCDs) of the vestibular system play an instrumental role in equilibration and rotation perception of vertebrates. The present paper is a review of quantitative approaches and shows how SCDs function. It consists of three parts. First, the biophysical mechanisms of an SCD system composed of three mutually connected ducts, allowing endolymph to flow from one duct into another one, are analysed. The flow is quantified by solving the continuity equations in conjunction with the equations of motion of the SCD hydrodynamics. This leads to mathematical expressions that are suitable for further analytical and numerical analysis. Second, analytical solutions are derived through four simplifying steps while keeping the essentials of the coupled system intact. Some examples of flow distributions for different rotations are given. Third, the focus is on the transducer function of the SCDs. The complex structure of the mechano-electrical transduction apparatus inside the ampullae is described, and the consequences for sensitivity and frequency response are evaluated. Furthermore, both the contributions of the different terms of the equations of motion and the influence of Brownian motion are analysed. Finally, size limitations, allometry and evolutionary aspects are taken into account.The aim of this study was to investigate temporal ultrasound measurements of the hyoid bone displacement during swallowing following thyroidectomy in women and to relate these measures to age, clinical outcomes, and upper digestive airway symptoms. The sample was divided into an experimental group (EG) of 20 women who underwent thyroidectomy (mean age = 49.55 years ± 15.14) and a control group (CG) of 20 healthy women volunteers (mean age = 40.75 years ± 15.92). Both groups were submitted to ultrasound assessment to obtain four temporal measurements of hyoid bone displacement during swallowing elevation, anteriorization, maximum displacement, and maintenance of maximum displacement. However, HRCA has not been used to characterize swallow function in specific patient populations. This study investigated the ability of HRCA to differentiate between swallows from healthy people and people with neurodegenerative diseases. We hypothesized that HRCA would differentiate between swallows from healthy people and people with neurodegenerative diseases with a high degree of accuracy. We analyzed 170 swallows from 20 patients with neurodegenerative diseases and 170 swallows from 51 healthy age-matched adults who underwent concurrent video fluoroscopy with non-invasive neck sensors.
