  • Background Microbubbles are widely used as highly effective contrast agents to improve the diagnostic capability of ultrasound imaging. Mounting evidence suggests that ultrasound coupled with microbubbles has promising therapeutic applications in cancer, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders by acting as gene or drug carriers. NcRNAs include small nuclear RNA (snRNA), small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer, RNA (tRNA), circular RNA (cRNA), and Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA). In this review, we discuss recent research that focused on the function and mechanism of microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNA (circRNA) in regulating placental trophoblasts.     Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder is rare and aggressive, its diagnosis is based on pathologic and immunohistochemical examination, currently there is no standard treatment for this tumor. Its concomitant occurrence with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon is exceptional.

    This case report describes a rare case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder that occurred concomitantly with sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma was established postoperatively by pathological and immunohistochemical examination. The biopsy of the colonic process confirmed the preoperative diagnosis. A laparotomy found a vesicular fundus process, peri-hilar adenopathy, metastasis of the liver segment V, and a sigmoid colon process. The patient underwent a cholecystectomy extended to segments IVb and V, with lymph node dissection and sigmoid colectomy. The postoperative follow-up was uneventful, and the length of hospitalization was seven days. The patient is currently undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy.

    To assess the availability, success rate and complications of microvascular iliac crest free flap for reconstruction of mandibular segmental defects.

    In this retrospective-descriptive study, we report patients who had undergone segmental mandibular resection for pathologic lesions and received reconstruction with iliac crest microvascular free flap between 2016 and 2019. Clinical and demographic data of all the cases were collected. Success was regarded as complete consolidation of the bone graft in panoramic radiograph. Postoperative complications were defined as major or minor based on the need for intervention. T-test, Kolomogorov_Smirnov, and multivariate analysis were used and the p-value<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.

    Of all 30 patients, 16 were women and 14 were men with an average age of 27.2 years (range 14-40). Patients were followed for 12-60 month (mean 38.4). One flap was lost due to unsalvageable venous thrombosis. Six other cases had post-op complications while smoking and diabetes were associated with more complications (P=0.036). Twenty-three patients received primary reconstruction which was more successful than secondary ones (P=0.003). Osteogenic sarcoma was associated with greater risk of complications (P<0.01).

    The results of this study suggest that iliac crest microvascular free flap serves as a promising option for the reconstruction of mandibular defects, providing excellent contour and acceptable success rate with low donor site morbidity. Future studies will focus on the role of systemic diseases in post-op complications and flap failures.

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal cancers worldwide. There are still challenges for HCC treatments, especially high resistance of the cancer cells to chemotherapy and/or target therapy. In this study, a responsive charge-reversal vehicle consists of negatively charged heparin core and positively charged ethanolamine (EA)-modified poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGEA) shell (named Hep@PGEA) with self-accelerating release for condensed nucleic acids was proposed to deliver the pCas9 plasmid encoding clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9) and the sgRNA targeting oncogene survivin to treat HCC. The Hep@PGEA/pCas9 system showed high anti-tumor efficiency via inducing apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation, migration and invasion capability of HCC cells. The Hep@PGEA/pCas9 system was further utilized to treat orthotopic HCC in **** via tail vein injection. The system exhibited an evident accumulation in the liver of **** and achieved obvious anti-tumor effects. In addition, co-addition of CDDP and celecoxib, which showed cytotoxic effects, increased the resistance to CDDP by increasing SLC7A11, which is one of the CDDP resistance mechanisms, in A549/DDP and SBC-3/DDP cells. On the other hand, celecoxib also showed antitumor effects on the spheroids of A549/DDP and SBC-3/DDP cells, and enhanced the antitumor effect of CDDP while increasing the mRNA levels of SLC7A11. Moreover, diclofenac was also cytotoxic and enhanced the cytotoxic effect of CDDP in cancer cells and CSCs. In this work, it was studied the effect of hypergravity on intestinal Caco-2 cells and its influence in the intestinal permeability of different nanoformulations and molecules. The diffusion of camptothecin released from polymeric micelles revealed a significant decrease, which agrees with the increased expression of the P-gp observed with the increase in g-levels, responsible for pumping this drug out. The neonatal Fc receptor-mediated transport of albumin-functionalized nanoparticles loaded with insulin showed no significant changes when increasing the g-levels. Thus, this study supports the effect of hypergravity on intestinal permeability is dependent on the molecule studied and the mechanism by which it is absorbed in the intestine.

    Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal cancers worldwide. There are still challenges for HCC treatments, especially high resistance of the cancer cells to chemotherapy and/or target therapy. In this study, a responsive charge-reversal vehicle consists of negatively charged heparin core and positively charged ethanolamine (EA)-modified poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGEA) shell (named Hep@PGEA) with self-accelerating release for condensed nucleic acids was proposed to deliver the pCas9 plasmid encoding clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9) and the sgRNA targeting oncogene survivin to treat HCC. The Hep@PGEA/pCas9 system showed high anti-tumor efficiency via inducing apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation, migration and invasion capability of HCC cells. The Hep@PGEA/pCas9 system was further utilized to treat orthotopic HCC in mice via tail vein injection. The system exhibited an evident accumulation in the liver of mice and achieved obvious anti-tumor effects. The Hep@PGEA/pCas9 system also showed marked improvement of HCC therapy with sorafenib and provided promising combination HCC treatment potentials. In this study, direct and indirect effects of exposition to violence within the family, insecurity in the family system (manifested as disengagement and/or preoccupation), and justification of violence on CPV toward mothers and fathers were analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM). Davies and Cummings emotional security theory (1994) was applied. A total of 904 high school students between 13 and 20 years old participated in this study. Information regarding each participant's committed CPV was obtained from the Child-to-Parent Aggression Questionnaire. Emotional insecurity was assessed with the Security in the Family System scale. To assess exposition to violence and justification of violence, the Exposure to Violence Questionnaire and Irrational Beliefs Inventory for Adolescents were applied, respectively. Strong relationships between exposition to violence within the family, emotional insecurity, justification of violence, and CPV toward mothers and fathers were observed. The results show that adolescents who are exposed to violence at home are more aggressive in the future. In addition, this relationship is mediated, at least in part, by the justification of violence and emotional insecurity. These results suggest that prevention and treatment of CPV aggressors should focus on improving security within the survivors' family system as well as modifying attitudes toward violence.

The main study trained clinicians and nursing staff in serious illness care conversations and requested they refer eligible patients. Eligible patients were those with serious illness or frailty expected to live 1 to 2 years. Clinicians indicated it was difficult to identify eligible patients. This study aimed to find better methods for increasing patient recruitment for the ACP study.

    Research staff brainstormed and implemented strategies to increase patient referrals from clinicians. Participating offices used Epic for their medical record and the Gagne Index was used to generate a list of eligible patients in Epic SlicerDicer. However, there have been no reports on the roles of miR-148a in the proliferation and adipogenesis of preadipocytes in sheep. In this study, the expression of miR-148a was profiled in the eight tissues of Tibetan ewes and differentiated preadipocytes, and the role of miR-148a in differentiation and proliferation of ovine preadipocytes was investigated using Oil Red O staining, CCK-8, EdU staining, cell cycle detection, and RT-qPCR. The effect of PTEN on the differentiation of ovine preadipocytes was also investigated. The miR-148a was widely expressed in the eight tissues investigated and had significantly increased expression in liver, spleen and subcutaneous adipose tissues, and the heart. The expression of miR-148a continued to increase with the differentiation of ovine preadipocytes. The over-expression of miR-148a significantly promoted differentiation but inhibited the proliferation of ovine preadipocytes. The inhibition of miR-148a had the opposite effect on the differentiation and proliferation of ovine preadipocytes with over-expressed miR-148a. The results from the dual luciferase reporter assays showed that miR-148a mimic significantly decreased the luciferase activity of PTEN-3'UTR dual luciferase reporter vector, suggesting that PTEN is a target gene of miR-148a. In over-expressed-PTEN preadipocytes, the number of lipid droplets remarkably decreased, and the expression levels of adipogenesis marker genes PPARγ, FASN, FATP4, GLUT4, C/EBPβ and LPL were also significantly down-regulated. Raw oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) was subjected to chemical treatment and acid hydrolysis to obtain C filler. B filler was ultra-sonicated for better dispersion in the TPS films to improve the filler-matrix interactions. The morphology and structure of fillers were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). TPS hybrid bio-composite films were produced by the casting method with different ratios of B and C fillers. The best ratio of ****was determined through the data of the tensile test. FTIR analysis proved the molecular interactions between the TPS and the hybrid fillers due to the presence of polar groups in their structure. XRD analysis confirmed the intercalation of the TPS chains between the B inter-platelets as a result of well-developed interactions between the TPS and hybrid fillers. SEM images suggested that more plastic deformation occurred in the fractured surface of the TPS hybrid bio-composite film due to the higher degree of stretching after being subjected to tensile loading. Overall, the results indicate that incorporating the hybrid ****fillers could tremendously improve the mechanical properties of the films. The best ratio of ****in the TPS was found to be 41, in which the tensile strength (8.52MPa), Young's modulus (42.0 MPa), elongation at break (116.4%) and tensile toughness of the film were increased by 92%, 146%, 156% and 338%, respectively. B filler was ultra-sonicated for better dispersion in the TPS films to improve the filler-matrix interactions. The morphology and structure of fillers were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). TPS hybrid bio-composite films were produced by the casting method with different ratios of B and C fillers. The best ratio of B/C was determined through the data of the tensile test. FTIR analysis proved the molecular interactions between the TPS and the hybrid fillers due to the presence of polar groups in their structure. XRD analysis confirmed the intercalation of the TPS chains between the B inter-platelets as a result of well-developed interactions between the TPS and hybrid fillers. SEM images suggested that more plastic deformation occurred in the fractured surface of the TPS hybrid bio-composite film due to the higher degree of stretching after being subjected to tensile loading. Overall, the results indicate that incorporating the hybrid B/C fillers could tremendously improve the mechanical properties of the films. The best ratio of B/C in the TPS was found to be 41, in which the tensile strength (8.52MPa), Young's modulus (42.0 MPa), elongation at break (116.4%) and tensile toughness of the film were increased by 92%, 146%, 156% and 338%, respectively. The Patient was admitted into the intensive care unit for severe cachexia and poor general condition 24 after introduction of parenteral nutrition (1500 Kcal/day). The evolution was lethal with multiple organ failure.

    Analyses were performed on the baseline data of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a multicenter and population-based study of the natural history of US midlife women aged from 42 to 52. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were performed to examine the association of beta-carotene intake with anxiety.

    A total of 3051 midlife women were included in the present study. In early perimenopausal women, the odds ratios (ORs) of anxiety in the crude model indicated that beta-carotene intake was inversely associated with anxiety. After additional adjustment for age, race/ethnicity, education, income, financial strain, physical activity, BMI, vasomotor symptoms (VMS), chronic stress, use of antidepressant and total caloric intake in model 1, the results were similar to those of the crude model. This association remained statistically significant and changed little when additional controlling for estradiol, testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in the fully adjusted model 2. The fully adjusted ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 0.606 (0.408-0.901). However, in premenopausal women, no statistically significant difference was observed between beta-carotene intake and anxiety.

    Recent studies indicate an urgent need to take action against mental health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the association between larger-scale environmental factors such as living conditions and mental health problems during the pandemic is currently unknown.

    A nationwide, cross-sectional internet survey was conducted in Japan between August and September 2020 to examine the association between urbanization level and neighborhood deprivation as living conditions and COVID-19 case numbers by prefecture. Prevalence ratios (PRs) for severe psychological distress, suicidal ideation, and new-onset suicidal ideation during the pandemic were adjusted for potential confounders.

    Among 24,819 responses analyzed, the prevalence of mental health problems was 9.2% for severe psychological distress and 3.6% for new-onset suicidal ideation. PRs for severe psychological distress were significantly associated with higher urbanization level (highest PR=1.30, 95% CI=1.08-1.56). Here, we utilized time-frequency analyses to characterize differences in neural oscillatory dynamics between subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls (HC). We further examined changes in TMS-related oscillatory power following convulsive therapy.

    Oscillatory power was examined following TMS over the dorsolateral prefrontal and motor cortices (DLPFC and M1) in 38 MDD subjects, and 22 HCs. We further investigated how these responses changed in the MDD group following an acute course of convulsive therapy (either magnetic seizure therapy [MST, n = 24] or electroconvulsive therapy [ECT, n = 14]).

    Prior to treatment, MDD subjects exhibited increased oscillatory power within delta, theta, and alpha frequency bands with TMS-EEG over the DLPFC, but showed no differences to HCs with stimulation over M1. Prevalence ratios (PRs) for severe psychological distress, suicidal ideation, and new-onset suicidal ideation during the pandemic were adjusted for potential confounders. Among 24,819 responses analyzed, the prevalence of mental health problems was 9.2% for severe psychological distress and 3.6% for new-onset suicidal ideation.     To estimate the overall frequency of epilepsy in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) and describe the profile of seizures and the response rate to anti-epileptic treatment in this group of patients.

    A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Cochrane Handbook and preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Observational studies that evaluated the frequency of epilepsy in children diagnosed with CZS according to international criteria were included in the study.

    Fourteen studies evaluating 903 patients diagnosed with CZS were pooled in a meta-analysis. All studies were conducted in Brazil, with reports published between 2016 and 2020, and included children diagnosed with CSZ from 0 to 40months of age. The overall rate of epilepsy in children diagnosed with CZS was estimated at 60% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.51-0.68). The studies included in this review show that the frequency of epilepsy in patients with CSZ varies with age, with higher rates in older children. The primary aim of this research was to evaluate the predictive value of C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) for all-cause mortality among patients with HFrEF despite ICD implantation.

    In a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled discontinuation study, 94 children and adolescents (ages 8-18years) who used methylphenidate beyond two years were either assigned to seven weeks of continued treatment with 36 or 54mg of extended-release methylphenidate or to gradual withdrawal over three weeks to placebo for four weeks.     We aimed to reveal whether static and dynamic pupillary responses can be used for the detection of autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

    We included in this study patients with OSAS, who were divided into three groups according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) (group 1, mild [n = 20]; group 2, moderate [n = 20]; and group 3, severe [n = 20]), and healthy controls (group 4, n = 20). Pupillary responses were measured using a pupillometry system.

    Static (mesopic PD, P = 0.0019; low photopic PD, P = 0.001) and dynamic pupil responses (resting diameter, P = 0.004; amplitude of pupil contraction, P < 0.001; duration of pupil contraction, P = 0.022; velocity of pupil contraction, P = 0.001; and velocity of pupil dilation, P = 0.012) were affected in patients with different OSAS severities. The two groups were comparable regarding age, time to surgery, fracture pattern distribution and surgical approaches. The mean operative time was significantly lower in the simulation group 113min ± 33 (60-180) versus 184 ± 58 (90-260), p = 0.04. The mean blood loss was significantly lower in the simulation group, p = 0.01. No statistical significant differences were found regarding radiological results (p = 0.16). No per-operative complications were recorded.

    This study confirms that pre-operative planning in acetabular surgery based on a PSBM results in a shorter operative time and a reduction of blood loss during surgery. This study also confirms the feasibility of PSBM planning in daily clinical routine.

By means of an eye-tracking experiment, 2-year-olds, 5-year-olds, younger and older adults (together N = 181) observed an agent repeatedly taking one of two paths to reach a goal. Then, this path became blocked, and for test trials only the other path was passable. Results demonstrated that in test trials younger and older adults anticipated that the agent would take the continuous path, indicating that they took the situational constraints into account. In contrast, 2- and 5-year-olds anticipated that the agent would take the blocked path, indicating that they still relied on the agent's previous observed behaviour and-contrary to claims by the teleological stance theory-did not take the situational constraints into account. The results highlight developmental changes in human's ability to include situational constraints in their visual anticipations. Overall, the study contributes to theories on predictive coding and the development of action understanding.

Cardiovascular disease risk was estimated using excess heart age (calculated using age, systolic blood pressure, blood pressure medication, diabetes, smoking, body mass index) and examined at two time points diagnosis and 2-year follow-up. Statistical analyses included within-group mean comparison tests and linear regression to examine predictors of excess heart age.

    Carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) of the cervical segment is a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of carotid artery disease. In rare cases, this procedure causes intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), which is described most often as an ipsilateral intra-parenchymal hematoma. This ICH is the result of a cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS). Isolated subarachnoid hemorrhage may occur exceptionally, with only 9 cases that have been reported in the literature.

    We reported a case of a 71-year-old man who presented a massive non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage one hour after angioplasty and stenting of the cervical segment of the left internal carotid artery. Medical and surgical management included external ventricular drain placement. Rebleeding occurred two days later, worsening the patient's clinical condition. Finally, the patient died 2 weeks later.

Unfortunately, most patients with colorectal cancer (>85%) have microsatellite stable tumors that do not respond. In this study, we aimed to decipher the underlying tumor-intrinsic mechanisms critical for improving immunotherapy in colorectal cancer.

    We used human and mouse tumor samples, cell lines, human colorectal cancer organoids, and various syngeneic orthotopic mouse models of late-stage colorectal cancer to define the effects of tumor cell-secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) on antitumor immune response.

    Our analyses of human colorectal cancer immune profiles and tumor-immune cell interactions showed that tumor-secreted EVs containing microRNA miR-424 suppressed the CD28-CD80/86 costimulatory pathway in tumor-infiltrating T cells and dendritic cells, leading to immune checkpoint blockade resistance. Modified tumor-secreted EVs with miR-424 knocked down enhanced T-cell-mediated antitumor immune response in colorectal cancer tumor models and increased the immune checkpoint blockade response. Intravenous injections of modified tumor-secreted EVs induced tumor antigen-specific immune responses and boosted the immune checkpoint blockade efficacy in colorectal cancer models that mimic aggressively progressing, late-stage disease.

Recent evidence indicates that tsRNAs are also modified, however, the impact of tRNA epitranscriptome deregulation on tsRNAs generation is only now beginning to be uncovered. The 5-methyluridine (m5U) modification at position 54 of cytosolic tRNAs is one of the most common and conserved tRNA modifications among species. The tRNA methyltransferase TRMT2A catalyzes this modification, but its biological role remains mostly unexplored. Here, we show that TRMT2A knockdown in human cells induces m5U54 tRNA hypomodification and tsRNA formation. More specifically, m5U54 hypomodification is followed by overexpression of the ribonuclease angiogenin (ANG) that cleaves tRNAs near the anticodon, resulting in accumulation of 5'tRNA-derived stress-induced RNAs (5'tiRNAs), namely 5'tiRNA-GlyGCC and 5'tiRNA-GluCTC, among others. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis confirms that down-regulation of TRMT2A and consequently m5U54 hypomodification impacts the cellular stress response and RNA stability, which is often correlated with tiRNA generation. Accordingly, exposure to oxidative stress conditions induces TRMT2A down-regulation and tiRNA formation in mammalian cells. Patients over 50 years old, who were diagnosed or treated for osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures in all hospitals and clinics, were analyzed between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2017 by using the HIRA database that contains prescription data and diagnostic codes. These data were retrospectively analyzed by decade and age-specific and gender-specific incidents in each year. We also evaluated other characteristics of patients including medication state of osteoporosis, primary used medical institution, regional-specific incidence of osteoporosis, and incidence of site-specific osteoporotic fractures. The number of osteoporosis patients over 50 years old, as diagnosed by a doctor, steadily increased from 2009 to 2017. The number of osteoporosis patients was notably greatest in the 60's and 70's age groups in every study period. Patients undergoing treatment for osteoporosis increased significantly (96%) from 2009 to 2017. Among the patients diagnosed with osteoporosis, the proportion who experienced osteoporotic fracture increased gradually (60%) from 2009 to 2017. The number of patients with osteoporotic fractures of the spine and hip was highest in the 70 to 90 age range, and the number of patients with osteoporotic fractures in the upper and lower extremities was highest in the 50 to 70 age range. Understanding the trends of osteoporosis in Korea will contribute to manage the increased number of patients with osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures.This paper examines a selection of 21st-century international examples of exhibited visual artworks involving live or deceased animals. It seeks to reveal the risks and benefits of unique encounters with animals through art and to consider the ethical implications of artwork deploying animals. Australian and international animal protection laws are not explicit when it comes to the sourcing of animals for art nor for the direct inclusion of animals in artworks. This lack leads to a variety of artistic practices, some considered ethical while others are viewed as controversial, bordering on animal cruelty. Artwork selection is determined by a focus on high-profile artists who intentionally use animals in their practice and whose reputation has been fostered by this intention. The study provides insight into how the intentional use of ethically sourced animals within art practice can be a method of addressing hierarchal human-animal imbalances. Further, this study identifies unethical practices that may be best avoided regardless of the pro-animal political statements the artists put forward.   • Following such an accelerated mutagenesis-followed by selection approach, three phenotypes were successfully evolved resistance to antibiotics streptomycin and rifampicin (either individually or combined) and reversion of a synthetic uracil auxotrophy. Thus, these mutator devices could be applied to accelerate the evolution of metabolic pathways in long-term evolutionary experiments, alternating cycles of (inducible) mutagenesis coupled to selection schemes toward the desired phenotype(s).To date, few studies have examined the role of sea spray aerosols (SSAs) in human exposure to harmful and beneficial marine compounds. Two groups of phycotoxins (brevetoxins and ovatoxins) have been reported to induce respiratory syndromes during harmful algal blooms. The aerosolization and coastal air concentrations of other common marine phycotoxins have, however, never been examined. This study provides the first (experimental) evidence and characterization of the aerosolization of okadaic acid (OA), homoyessotoxin, and dinophysistoxin-1 using seawater spiked with toxic algae combined with the realistic SSA production in a marine aerosol reference tank (MART). The potential for aerosolization of these phycotoxins was highlighted by their 78- to 1769-fold enrichment in SSAs relative to the subsurface water. To obtain and support these results, we first developed an analytical method for the determination of phycotoxin concentrations in SSAs, which showed good linearity (R2 > 0.99), recovery (85.3-101.8%), and precision (RSDs ≤ 17.2%). We also investigated natural phycotoxin air concentrations by means of in situ SSA sampling with concurrent aerosolization experiments using natural seawater in the MART. This approach allowed us to indirectly quantify the (harmless) magnitude of OA concentrations (0.6-51 pg m-3) in Belgium's coastal air. Overall, this study provides new insights into the enriched aerosolization of marine compounds and proposes a framework to assess their airborne exposure and effects on human health.ConspectusMetal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a huge, rapidly growing class of crystalline, porous materials that consist of inorganic nodes linked by organic struts. Offering the advantages of thermal stability combined with high densities of accessible reactive sites, some MOFs are good candidate materials for applications in catalysis and separations. Such MOFs include those with nodes that are metal oxide clusters (e.g., Zr6O8, Hf6O8, and Zr12O22) and long rods (e.g., [Al(OH)]n). These nanostructured metal oxides are often compared with bulk metal oxides, but they are in essence different because their structures are not the same and because the MOFs have a high degree of uniformity, offering the prospect of a deep understanding of reactivity that is barely attainable for most bulk metal oxides because of their surface heterogeneity. This prospect is being realized as it has become evident that adventitious components on MOF node surfaces, besides the linkers, are crucial. These ligands arise from modulatve sites themselves (e.g., terminal OH groups in tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) dehydration). Surprisingly, in view of the catalytic importance of such ligands on bulk metal oxides, their subtle chemistry on MOF nodes is only recently being determined. We describe (1) methods for identifying and quantifying node ligands (especially by IR spectroscopy and by 1H NMR spectroscopy of MOFs digested in NaOH/D2O solutions); (2) node ligand surface chemistry expressed as reaction networks; (3) catalysis, with mechanisms and energetics determined by density functional theory (DFT) and spectroscopy; and (4) MOF unzipping by reactions of linker carboxylate ligands with reactants such as alcohols that break node-linker bonds, a cause of catalyst deactivation and also an indicator of node-linker bond strength and MOF stability.Actin is the most abundant protein in eukaryotic cells and is key to many cellular functions. The filamentous form of actin (F-actin) can be studied with help of natural products that specifically recognize it, as for example fluorophore-labeled probes of the bicyclic peptide phalloidin, but no synthetic probes exist for the monomeric form of actin (G-actin). Herein, we have panned a phage display library consisting of more than 10 billion bicyclic peptides against G-actin and isolated binders with low nanomolar affinity and greater than 1000-fold selectivity over F-actin. Sequence analysis revealed a strong similarity to a region of thymosin-β4, a protein that weakly binds G-actin, and competition binding experiments confirmed a common binding region at the cleft between actin subdomains 1 and 3. Together with F-actin-specific peptides that we also isolated, we evaluated the G-actin peptides as probes in pull-down, imaging, and competition binding experiments. While the F-actin peptides were applied successfully for capturing actin in cell lysates and for imaging, the G-actin peptides did not bind in the cellular context, most likely due to competition with thymosin-β4 or related endogenous proteins for the same binding site.MXene is a generic name for a large family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides or nitrides, which show great promise in the field of transparent supercapacitors. Furthermore, the potential of inkjet-printed transparent MXene films in transparent supercapacitors was assessed by electrochemical characterization. The MXene film, with a transmittance of 24%, exhibited a superior areal capacitance of 887.5 μF cm-2 and retained 85% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles at the scan rate of 10 mV s-1.

Two groups of phycotoxins (brevetoxins and ovatoxins) have been reported to induce respiratory syndromes during harmful algal blooms. The aerosolization and coastal air concentrations of other common marine phycotoxins have, however, never been examined. This study provides the first (experimental) evidence and characterization of the aerosolization of okadaic acid (OA), homoyessotoxin, and dinophysistoxin-1 using seawater spiked with toxic algae combined with the realistic SSA production in a marine aerosol reference tank (MART). The potential for aerosolization of these phycotoxins was highlighted by their 78- to 1769-fold enrichment in SSAs relative to the subsurface water. To obtain and support these results, we first developed an analytical method for the determination of phycotoxin concentrations in SSAs, which showed good linearity (R2 > 0.99), recovery (85.3-101.8%), and precision (RSDs ≤ 17.2%). We also investigated natural phycotoxin air concentrations by means of in situ SSA sampling with concurrent aerosolization experiments using natural seawater in the MART. This approach allowed us to indirectly quantify the (harmless) magnitude of OA concentrations (0.6-51 pg m-3) in Belgium's coastal air. Overall, this study provides new insights into the enriched aerosolization of marine compounds and proposes a framework to assess their airborne exposure and effects on human health.ConspectusMetal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a huge, rapidly growing class of crystalline, porous materials that consist of inorganic nodes linked by organic struts. Offering the advantages of thermal stability combined with high densities of accessible reactive sites, some MOFs are good candidate materials for applications in catalysis and separations. Such MOFs include those with nodes that are metal oxide clusters (e.g., Zr6O8, Hf6O8, and Zr12O22) and long rods (e.g., [Al(OH)]n). These nanostructured metal oxides are often compared with bulk metal oxides, but they are in essence different because their structures are not the same and because the MOFs have a high degree of uniformity, offering the prospect of a deep understanding of reactivity that is barely attainable for most bulk metal oxides because of their surface heterogeneity. This prospect is being realized as it has become evident that adventitious components on MOF node surfaces, besides the linkers, are crucial. These ligands arise from modulatve sites themselves (e.g., terminal OH groups in tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) dehydration). Surprisingly, in view of the catalytic importance of such ligands on bulk metal oxides, their subtle chemistry on MOF nodes is only recently being determined.
