Additional questions were included to collect information on participant demographics, injury and illness history and dietary habits. Logistic regression analyses explored differences between groups. RESULTS Risk of ExHMC was identified in 23.3% (n=185) of 794 questionnaire participants. Following multivariate analyses, risk of ExHMC was independently associated with a lower than normal sex drive rating within the last month (OR 7.62, 95%CI 4.99-11.63) and less than three morning erections per week within the last month (OR 4.67, 95%CI 3.23-6.76). Risk of ExHMC was associated with 15-21 days absence from training or competition during the previous 6 months due to overload injuries in the univariate analysis (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 1.24-5.84). CONCLUSION Risk of ExHMC and associated symptoms in this heterogeneous sample may be indicative of RED-S. Confounding factors such as over-training, medication use, fatigue and psychological stress need to be considered. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of all registered New Zealand commercial poultry operations was conducted in 2016 collecting information on farm demographics, biosecurity practices, and contact risk pathways. Survey responses were used to generate an unweighted subjective disease risk score based eight risk criteria and a subjective biosecurity score based on the frequency with which producers reported implementing seven biosecurity measures. Producer opinions towards poultry health issues were also determined. RESULTS Responses to the survey response were obtained from 120/414 (29.0%) producers, including 57/157 (36.3%) broiler, 33/169 (19.5%) layer, 24/55 (44%) breeder, and 6/32 (19%) other poultry production types. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 52 nasal swabs were obtained from health-care workers and hemodialysis patients to detect methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates. The resistance to different antibacterial agents was determined by disk diffusion method. Also, Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) - encoding gene as well as Staphylococcal protein A (spa) type were determined. The nasal carriage rate of S. aureus was found to be 24.4% and 18.8% in patients on hemodialysis and health-care workers, respectively. Among identified isolates, no methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was found. Only two MSSA isolates (16.7%) were resistant to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. One isolate (8.6%) was positive for pvl gene. Moreover, 8 spa types were found. According to BURP analysis, six out of the 12 S. aureus isolates (50%) belonged to the same clone, indicating a prevalence of a major clone among MSSA in carriage, including patients and HCW. Mupirocin is still the appropriate drug for reducing nasal colonization in our setting. Accumulation of isolates from patients and staff in one spa clonal complex is alarming for the necessity of more serious infection control in this center. How these challenges were addressed, what clinical studies were conducted during that outbreak, and the lessons learned for dealing with future outbreaks were the subject of a National Academy of Medicine committee report titled Integrating Clinical Research into Epidemic Response The Ebola Experience. This report suggested improvements for research during subsequent emerging or re-emerging outbreaks and is summarized in this review. We also discuss the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and highlight how the dialogue has changed and how successful clinical trials have been implemented. We conclude with a description of productive efforts to include pregnant women and children in therapeutic and vaccine trials during outbreaks that are currently ongoing. Methods We first evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of SSA test in a training cohort (TSHoma, N=32; RTHβ, N=20). The test was then validated in an independent cohort (TSHoma, N=9; RTHβ, N=2). We finally applied the SSA test in 12 perceptively enrolled IST cases with negative imaging findings and absent THRB mutations or mixed hormone imbalances. Results Both TSHoma and RTHβ patients showed a decrease of TSH at the start of the SSA test, but the velocity of the TSH suppression slowly decreased in RTHβ patients after 2 h.   • The total mass concentration of the measured analytes decreased by 93% during wastewater treatment. The analyte concentrations in the wastewater effluent were comparable to those measured in surface water 1 km downstream of the wastewater discharge point. Ultimately, the comprehensive method will serve as an important tool to inform the occurrence, fate, transport, and toxicity of a large suite of priority pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical metabolites in natural and engineered systems. Cadmium (Cd) is widely present in the environment as a heavy metal poison. Prenatal Cd exposure can damage the placental glucocorticoid barrier, leading to foetal growth restriction (FGR), but the molecular mechanism is unknown. We aimed to study the effects of prenatal Cd exposure on 11β-HSD2 and its possible involvement in Cd induced damage in the placental glucocorticoid barrier. Pregnant rats were treated with CdCl2 (1.0 mg/kg/day) by gavage from gestational day (GD) 9-19. Maternal exposure to Cd increased the FGR rate of the offspring, and the levels of corticosterone in the placenta, maternal and foetal serum. Further in vitro experiments with placenta or JEG3 cells indicated that Cd was able to decrease 11β-HSD2 and Sp1 expression in trophoblast cells but did not affect 11β-HSD1. Additionally, decreased p300 and Sp1 enrichment at the 11β-HSD2 promoter region was observed in the cells treated with Cd. Decreasing or increasing Sp1 expression accordingly inhibited or promoted the expression of 11β-HSD2 and further decreased or increased p300 and Sp1 enrichment at the 11β-HSD2 promoter region. In conclusion, Cd inhibits the expression of 11β-HSD2 by affecting the binding of p300 to 11β-HSD2 via a decrease in Sp1 expression, which damages the placental glucocorticoid barrier and exposes the foetus to excessive glucocorticoids, resulting in FGR. These findings reveal a possible underlying molecular mechanism by which Cd exposure leads to FGR. Monitoring drinking water, including bottled water, is imperative to safeguarding public health especially where bottled water consumption is high like in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In this study, radionuclide activity levels of Tritium (3H) and Potassium (40K) were assessed in various brands of bottled water marketed in UAE. Activity level data was used to calculate the annual effective doses (Ed) for different age groups, and the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) for adult males and females in the UAE population. Activity levels for both radionuclides were below the allowable maximum guideline values specified by local and international standards. Calculated total age dependent ingestion doses revealed that adults and lactation age groups received the highest effective ingestion doses. Adult males exhibited a higher ELCR for both isotopes, compared to females. Nonetheless, total radioactive dose for each water brand (0.91-1.47 μSv/yr) as well as for each population group were well below the recommended annual reference dose level of 100 μSv set by World Health Organization. We selected zebrafish (Danio rerio) to assess the toxicity of three TSILs 1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C2NH2MIm]BF4), 1-methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([MOEMIm]BF4) and 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([HOEMIm]BF4). The 96 h median lethal concentration (96 h LC50) of the three TSILs [C2NH2MIm]BF4, [MOEMIm]BF4 and [HOEMIm]BF4 on zebrafish determined by an acute toxicity test were 143.8 mg/L, 2492.5 mg/L and 3086.7 mg/L, respectively. In the oxidative damage and DNA damage research experiments, zebrafish were exposed to [C2NH2MIm]BF4 (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/L), [MOEMIm]BF4 and [HOEMIm]BF4 (0, 1, 10, 50 and 100 mg/L) for 28 days, and levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (***), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), malondialdehyde (MDA) and olive tail moment (OTM) in zebrafish liver were tested on days 7, 14, 21 and 28 after the exposure test. During the experiment, increased contents of ROS and MDA were detected; enzymatic activities especially *** were inhibited; and DNA damage occurred in zebrafish. The toxicity of the three TSILs was compared by the integrated biomarker response (IBR). The toxicity order of three TSILs was [MOEMIm]BF4 > [HOEMIm]BF4 > [C2NH2MIm]BF4. The adsorption of NO on P25 was negligible when comparing to that of SO2, while with the coexistence of NO and SO2 in flue gas, both the adsorption of SO2 and NO were improved. In the presence of water and oxygen, the photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of NO with an efficiency of >69% was observed on irradiated TiO2 surface, which lasted for at least 1000 min.   • BACKGROUND The critical question of racial and gender diversity in pediatric anesthesia training programs has not been previously explored. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate trends by race/ethnicity and gender in pediatric anesthesiology fellowship training programs in the United States for the years 2000 to 2018. METHODS Demographic data on pediatric anesthesiology fellows and anesthesiology residents were obtained from the self-reported data collected for the Journal of the American Medical Association's annual report on Graduate Medical Education for the years 2000 to 2018. Diversity was assessed by calculating the proportions of trainees per year by gender and racial/ethnic groups in pediatric anesthesiology fellowship and anesthesiology residency programs. Logistic regression equations were developed to estimate the annual growth rate of each racial/ethnic groups. RESULTS The number of pediatric anesthesiology fellows increased from 57 trainees in 2000-2001 to 202 in 2017-2018 at an aversistent underrepresentation of black and Hispanic trainees in pediatric anesthesiology. It appears that their low numbers in anesthesiology residency programs (the reservoir) may be partly responsible. Efforts to increase ethnic/racial diversity in pediatric anesthesiology fellowship and anesthesiology residency training programs are urgently needed.BACKGROUND Postoperative pulmonary complications are associated with increased morbidity. METHODS Patients with an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score >1 and who were scheduled for major surgery of >2 hours were enrolled in a single-center prospective study. After extubation, lung ultrasound was performed after a median time of 60 minutes by 2 certified anesthesiologists in the postanesthesia care unit after a standardized tracheal extubation. Postoperative pulmonary complications occurring within 8 postoperative days were recorded. The association between lung ultrasound findings and postoperative pulmonary complications was analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS Among the 327 patients included, 69 (19%) developed postoperative pulmonary complications. The lung ultrasound score was higher in the patients who developed postoperative pulmonary complications (12 [7-18] vs 8 [4-12]; P less then .001). The odds ratio for pulmonary complications in patients who had a pleural effusion detected by lung ultrasound was 3.7 (95% confidence interval, 1.2-11.7). The hospital death rate was also higher in patients with pleural effusions (22% vs 1.3%; P less then .001). Patients with pulmonary consolidations on lung ultrasound had a higher risk of postoperative mechanical ventilation (17% vs 5.1%; P = .001). In all patients, the area under the curve for predicting postoperative pulmonary complications was 0.64 (95% confidence interval, 0.57-0.71). CONCLUSIONS When lung ultrasound is performed precociously less then 2 hours after extubation, detection of immediate postoperative alveolar consolidation and pleural effusion by lung ultrasound is associated with postoperative pulmonary complications and morbi-mortality. However, the JRSC core mission goes beyond rapid recovery, aiming to be an innovation center with a focus on superlative patient experience and engagement, efficiency, and data-driven continuous improvement.     BACKGROUND The critical question of racial and gender diversity in pediatric anesthesia training programs has not been previously explored. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate trends by race/ethnicity and gender in pediatric anesthesiology fellowship training programs in the United States for the years 2000 to 2018. METHODS Demographic data on pediatric anesthesiology fellows and anesthesiology residents were obtained from the self-reported data collected for the Journal of the American Medical Association's annual report on Graduate Medical Education for the years 2000 to 2018. Diversity was assessed by calculating the proportions of trainees per year by gender and racial/ethnic groups in pediatric anesthesiology fellowship and anesthesiology residency programs. Logistic regression equations were developed to estimate the annual growth rate of each racial/ethnic groups. RESULTS The number of pediatric anesthesiology fellows increased from 57 trainees in 2000-2001 to 202 in 2017-2018 at an aversistent underrepresentation of black and Hispanic trainees in pediatric anesthesiology. It appears that their low numbers in anesthesiology residency programs (the reservoir) may be partly responsible. Phenolic compounds such as catechol are present in a wide variety of foods and beverages; they are of great importance due to their antioxidant properties. Their consumption protects against the development of certain diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. A MIP chitosan (CS) film has been electrodeposited on a boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode, by chronoamperommetry in the presence of catechol, followed by elution with 0.1 M KCl. The morphology of the MIP and non-MIP (NIP) film has been studied by AFM. The electrochemical response of the sensor analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) indicates that the sensor shows excellent reproducibility (RSD = 4.1%) and repeatability (RSD = 7.0%) for catechol detection in the range of 0 to 80 μM, with a detection limit of 6.9 × 10-7 M and high selectivity to catechol recognition versus different phenolic compounds. The results obtained in a red wine show that it can detect catechol in a complex matrix. Inflammatory diseases increase has recently sparked the research interest for drugs diagnostic tools development. At therapeutic doses, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or aspirin) is widely used for these diseases' treatment. ASA overdoses can however give rise to adverse side effects including ulcers, gastric damage. This paper reports aspirin analysis in urine, saliva and pharmaceutical tablet using an electrochemical sensor and a voltammetric electronic tongue (VE-Tongue). The electrochemical sensor was fabricated by self-assembling chitosan capped with gold nanoparticles (Cs + AuNPs) on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). It exhibits a logarithmic-linear relationship between its response and the ASA concentration in the range between 1 pg/mL and 1 μg/mL. A low detection limit (0.03 pg/mL), good selectivity against phenol and benzoic acid interference, and successful practical application were demonstrated. Qualitative analysis was performed using the VE-Tongue based unmodified metal electrodes combined with two chemometric approaches to classify urine samples spiked with different aspirin concentrations. Partial least squares (PLS) method provided prediction models obtained from the data of both devices with a regression correlation coefficient R2 = 0.99. Correspondingly, the SPCE/(Cs + AuNPs) electrochemical sensor and VE-Tongue could be viable tools for biological analysis of drugs. There is a significant industrial demand for minimizing the size of droplets for various technical applications. Herein, conformal polymer coatings were used to decrease the orifice dimensions of aperture plates to almost any desired dimension. The generated droplet size revealed a relevant impact on the final dried particle size in a spray-drying process. Likewise, the smaller droplets generated resulted in an improved lung deposition following inhalation. Extracellular matrix (ECM) contains a wide array of complex proteins, growth factors and cytokines that regulate cell behavior and tissue development. ECM harvested from non-homologous ECM sources still provide a structural support and biochemical cues to cells for effective tissue remodeling. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of non-tissue specific decellularized ECM from porcine dermis loaded with biphasic calcium phosphate powder (BCP) in bone regeneration. Thermosensitive ECM hydrogels with BCP powder exhibited a porous morphology with a suitable injectability and increased mechanical stability. In-vitro studies using MC3T3-E1 pre osteoblast cells showed that the injectable ECM hydrogels were biocompatible and supported the osteogenic differentiation. The bone regeneration capacity of the injectable ECM hydrogels was evaluated in-vivo by implanting in rat femoral head for 4 and 8 weeks. Micro-CT and histological staining results indicated that the injectable ECM hydrogels loaded with BCP powder showed higher and improved bone formation compared with the unfilled defect. Injectable ECM loaded with BCP powder is a good potential biomaterial for non-load bearing bone regeneration application. Interest in nanostructures such as titanate nanotubes (TNT) has grown notably in recent years due to their biocompatibility and economic viability, making them promising for application in the biomedical field. Quercetin (Qc) has shown great potential as a chemopreventive agent and has been widely studied for the treatment of diseases such as bladder cancer. Motivated by the possibilities of developing a new hybrid nanostructure with potential in biomedical applications, this study aimed to investigate the incorporation of quercetin in sodium (NaTNT) and zinc (ZnTNT) titanate nanotubes, and characterize the nanostructures formed. Qc release testing was also performed and cytotoxicity in Vero and T24 cell lines evaluated by the MTT assay. The effect of TNTs on T24 bladder cancer cell radiosensitivity was also assessed, using cell proliferation and a clonogenic assay. The TNT nanostructures were synthesized and characterized by FESEM, EDS, TEM, FTIR, XRD and TGA. The results showed that the nanostructures have a tubular structure and that the exchange of Na+ ions for Zn2+ and incorporation of quercetin did not alter this morphology.

  • Arylated building blocks or heterocycles are key to myriad applications, including pharmaceutical drug discovery, materials sciences, and many more. Herein, we have reported a mild and efficient strategy for generation of aryl radicals by reacting appropriate aryl hydrazines with catalytic iodine in open air. The aryl radicals were quenched by diversely substituted 1,4-napthoquinones present in the reaction mixture to afford diversely substituted 2,3-napthoquinones in moderate to excellent yield. Control experiments provided insights into the putative reaction mechanism. Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society.An amino curing agent containing silicon/titanium flame-retardant elements (STCA) based on (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and tetrabutyl titanate was successfully prepared. The thermal decomposition and flame-retardant properties of a STCA-cured trifunctional epoxy resin, which was facilely synthesized by 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane and epichlorohydrin via a two-step method, were compared with those of another amino curing agent containing silicon (SCA) based on APTES and methyltrimethoxysilane. The structures of STCA and SCA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), 29Si NMR, and Raman spectroscopies. The STCA-cured thermoset not only had good thermal stability with an initial decomposition temperature of 344.8 °C and a char yield of 52.7% at 800 °C but also exhibited the overall improvement of flame-retardant properties. V-0 rating was achieved using the UL-94 test, and the value of limiting oxygen index reached 33.8%. From the thermogravimetry-infrared test, the yield of pyrolysis products of the STCA-cured thermoset was significantly decreased, indicating the lower toxicity in contrast to the SCA-cured thermoset. Flame-retardant performances were also investigated using the cone calorimetry test, and the flame retardancy mechanism was studied using scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR, and energy-dispersive spectrometry. The results indicate that the introduction of silicon/titanium to the system reveals the synergistic effects to promote the formation of an intumescent, sufficient, and compact char layer during combustion, which could effectively prevent heat, oxygen, and flame from penetrating into the interior structure, and lead to the retardance of further combustion. The adsorption of pretilachlor was entropically driven by hydrophobic interaction. The entropy change dropped with increasing surfactant loading from 0.4 to 1.50 times the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the bentonite used, corresponding to a decrease in the degree of freedom of pretilachlor molecules due to the enhanced order of surfactant in the interlayer. The composite sponge (CN@PDMS) exhibits excellent hydrophobic and superoleophilic properties with a water contact angle of 133.2°. This sponge also shows high selective absorption of organic solvents and oils with high recyclability after 10 absorption cycles. Furthermore, the CN@PDMS sponge has a high ability for demulsification of the oil-in-water emulsion as well. The as-prepared sponge displays high thermal stability, retaining 82.16% of its original weight up to 550 °C, and extraordinary prolonged stability in harsh corrosive solutions over 35 h compared with the pristine PDMS sponge. Additionally, the CN@PDMS sponge exhibits a high ability for adsorption and photodegradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation with self-cleaning and high reusability over 5 runs. A liquid-liquid extraction sample preparation technique was applied to 100 different seized samples obtained from the Anti-Narcotics Department of Public Security in a period between 2017 and 2018. Profiling of the seized samples revealed different distributions of the targeted SCs in the obtained samples. Upon quantitation, concentrations of these SCs varied greatly within and among the samples. The use of GC-MS analysis provided a powerful technique in the detection and identification of SCs.

Herein, we have reported a mild and efficient strategy for generation of aryl radicals by reacting appropriate aryl hydrazines with catalytic iodine in open air. The aryl radicals were quenched by diversely substituted 1,4-napthoquinones present in the reaction mixture to afford diversely substituted 2,3-napthoquinones in moderate to excellent yield. The thermal decomposition and flame-retardant properties of a STCA-cured trifunctional epoxy resin, which was facilely synthesized by 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane and epichlorohydrin via a two-step method, were compared with those of another amino curing agent containing silicon (SCA) based on APTES and methyltrimethoxysilane. The structures of STCA and SCA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), 29Si NMR, and Raman spectroscopies. The STCA-cured thermoset not only had good thermal stability with an initial decomposition temperature of 344.8 °C and a char yield of 52.7% at 800 °C but also exhibited the overall improvement of flame-retardant properties. V-0 rating was achieved using the UL-94 test, and the value of limiting oxygen index reached 33.8%. From the thermogravimetry-infrared test, the yield of pyrolysis products of the STCA-cured thermoset was significantly decreased, indicating the lower toxicity in contrast to the SCA-cured thermoset. Flame-retardant performances were also investigated using the cone calorimetry test, and the flame retardancy mechanism was studied using scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR, and energy-dispersive spectrometry. The results indicate that the introduction of silicon/titanium to the system reveals the synergistic effects to promote the formation of an intumescent, sufficient, and compact char layer during combustion, which could effectively prevent heat, oxygen, and flame from penetrating into the interior structure, and lead to the retardance of further combustion. To find risk factors of preterm birth, data was divided into two groups Group-1 consisted cases with preterm birth defined as gestational age less then 37 weeks on ultrasonography; and Group-2 consisted controls with full-term birth defined as gestational age 37-41 weeks. Data was analysed using SPSS 22. RESULTS There were 1,691 females with mean gestational age of 37.3±2.062 weeks. The prevalence of preterm birth was 366(21.64%). Top 5 major risk factors identified were Placenta Previa (odds ratio 51.97), maternal thyroid disease (odds ratio 18.46), being a minority (odds ratio 7.73), foetal distress (odds ratio 7.19), and maternal asthma (odds ratio 6.23). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of preterm birth was found to be high with several modifiable and controllable risk factors.OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of combining an oral chemotherapeutic agent temozolamide with radiotherapy in the management of the un-resectable non-metastatic soft tissue sarcomas compared with radiotherapy alone. Patients with all sub-types of locally advanced un-resectable soft tissue sarcomas were randomised into two groups. Group-A received radiotherapy alone while Group-B received concomitant chemoradiotherapy with temozolamide after receiving two cycles of standard chemotherapy. Response was evaluated according to response evaluation criteria in solid tumours through computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging after 6 weeks following completion of radiotherapy. SPSS 21 was used for data analysis. RESULTS Of the 64 patients, 32(50%) were assigned to each group. The mean age of Group-A was 36.25±20.31 and of Group-B 37.84±15.79 years .There were 18(56.3%) males in Group-A and 20(62.5%) in Group-B. Improvement in trends of overall response rate was observed in Group-B 24(75%) compared to 18(56.3%) in Group-A (p=0.12).. A previous study suggested that social withdrawal has a negative relationship with sexual maturity among adolescent boys. However, the relationship between social withdrawal and testosterone in adolescence is unknown. This study aimed to examine whether social withdrawal was negatively associated with testosterone levels in early adolescent boys. Salivary samples were collected from 159 healthy early adolescent boys (mean age [standard deviation] 11.5 [0.73]) selected from participants of the "population-neuroscience study of the Tokyo Teen Cohort" (pn-TTC). Social withdrawal and confounding factors, such as the secondary sexual characteristics and their age in months, were evaluated by self-administered questionnaires completed by the primary parents. The degree of social withdrawal was assessed with the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). Levels of salivary testosterone, and cortisol as a control, were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Logistic regression was conducted to examine the association between social withdrawal and testosterone levels. A higher risk of social withdrawal was associated with a lower salivary testosterone level after adjustment for age in months (odds ratio 0.55, 95 % confidence interval 0.33-0.94), and the association remained significant after adjusting for body mass index, the degree of anxiety/depression and pubertal stage. Thus, we found a negative relationship between social withdrawal and testosterone levels in early adolescent boys. Treatment manual and duration were the same. Clients treated by student therapists had largely comparable outcomes on depressive symptom change, therapeutic alliance, and CT skills. Results supported non-inferiority of student therapists on change in depressive symptoms, but non-inferiority was not supported when using an interviewer evaluated measure of depression. Evidence of non-inferiority was also obtained for client CT skills and therapeutic alliance. In fact, conventional superiority analyses indicated student therapists outperformed clinical trial therapists on alliance and CT skills. The rate of dropout among student therapists (30%) was numerically higher than among clinical trial therapists (17%) and our results did not support non-inferiority on dropout. Patients with SAD completed an incidental emotion regulation task during fMRI before and after treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy (n = 23, collapsed across groups). Psychophysiological interaction analyses using amygdala seed regions were conducted to assess changes in functional connectivity from pre-to post-treatment that predicted symptom change from 6 to 12-month follow-up. Negative change (i.e., greater inverse/weaker positive) in amygdala connectivity with the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) predicted greater symptom reduction during follow-up. Positive change in amygdala connectivity with the cerebellum, fusiform gyrus, and pre-central and post-central gyri predicted less symptom reduction (e.g., no change or worsening). Results suggest that strengthened amygdala connectivity with regulatory regions may promote better long-term outcomes, whereas changes with visual and sensorimotor regions may represent sensitization to emotion-related cues, conferring poorer outcomes. Salivary samples were collected from 159 healthy early adolescent boys (mean age [standard deviation] 11.5 [0.73]) selected from participants of the "population-neuroscience study of the Tokyo Teen Cohort" (pn-TTC). Social withdrawal and confounding factors, such as the secondary sexual characteristics and their age in months, were evaluated by self-administered questionnaires completed by the primary parents. The degree of social withdrawal was assessed with the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). Levels of salivary testosterone, and cortisol as a control, were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Logistic regression was conducted to examine the association between social withdrawal and testosterone levels. A higher risk of social withdrawal was associated with a lower salivary testosterone level after adjustment for age in months (odds ratio 0.55, 95 % confidence interval 0.33-0.94), and the association remained significant after adjusting for body mass index, the degree of anxiety/depression and pubertal stage. We conducted a non-randomized comparison of student therapists vs. clinical trial therapists on change in depressive symptoms, dropout, change in CT skills, and therapeutic alliance among 100 clients with moderate to severe depression. Treatment manual and duration were the same. Clients treated by student therapists had largely comparable outcomes on depressive symptom change, therapeutic alliance, and CT skills. Results supported non-inferiority of student therapists on change in depressive symptoms, but non-inferiority was not supported when using an interviewer evaluated measure of depression. Evidence of non-inferiority was also obtained for client CT skills and therapeutic alliance. Patients with SAD completed an incidental emotion regulation task during fMRI before and after treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy (n = 23, collapsed across groups). Psychophysiological interaction analyses using amygdala seed regions were conducted to assess changes in functional connectivity from pre-to post-treatment that predicted symptom change from 6 to 12-month follow-up. Negative change (i.e., greater inverse/weaker positive) in amygdala connectivity with the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) predicted greater symptom reduction during follow-up. Positive change in amygdala connectivity with the cerebellum, fusiform gyrus, and pre-central and post-central gyri predicted less symptom reduction (e.g., no change or worsening). Results suggest that strengthened amygdala connectivity with regulatory regions may promote better long-term outcomes, whereas changes with visual and sensorimotor regions may represent sensitization to emotion-related cues, conferring poorer outcomes.
