  • This work aimed to carry out phytochemical prospecting and evaluate the antioxidant potential of Diplopterys pubipetala, a species of Malpighiaceae family that has not yet been studied.In qualitative analyses of hydroethanolic extracts of leaves and stems were detected the presence of flavonoids, alkaloidsand terpenes. The histochemical evaluation evidenced a greater distribution of these compounds in the tissues of leaf when compared with those of stem. The analysis by mass spectrometry allowed the identification of prenylated xanthones and glycoside flavonoids that have not yet been reported in the literature. The antioxidant activity of the stem extract was considered moderate (IAA = 0.79), but the leaves presented a strong antioxidant activity (IAA = 1.6). In this work we present information about the phytochemicals of D. pubipetala, showing that the species is promising in obtaining compounds with medicinal potential mainly antioxidant potential.
    Explanations for racial disparities in preterm birth (PTB) are elusive, especially when comparing high rates in some racial groups with low rates in Mexican-immigrant women. The purpose of this study was to examine potential protective factors against PTB such as religiosity and acculturation.

    This study was a prospective investigation of Mexican- and U.S.-born pregnant women. Women were recruited from a low-income-serving prenatal clinic in Texas. Survey instruments included socioeconomic variables, acculturation, and religiosity/spirituality (R/S). Logistic regression was used to examine the associations between acculturation, religiosity, and PTB. Because of the low prevalence of PTB in our sample, we were not able to adjust for confounding characteristics.

    Ninety-one low-income women, mostly Mexican immigrants, participated in the study. PTB in our sample was lower than the national average in the United States (5.5% vs. 9.9%) and was positively but moderately associated with high R/S. R/S scores were high, particularly for frequency of attendance, prayer, and religious coping. Women with lower acculturation had higher scores on the religiosity measures.

The microenvironment associated with obesity increases growth factors and pro-inflammatory cytokines which have been implicated mechanistically to promote invasion, metastasis, and androgen-independent growth. This review summarizes recent findings related to obesity-induced inflammation which may be the link to advanced prostate cancer. The current study examines school absenteeism and associated factors in medically hospitalized children and adolescents with SSRDs. Retrospective data were reviewed of 243 patients aged 5 to 18 years admitted at a pediatric hospital from 2012 to 2014, referred to the Psychiatry Consultation Service and diagnosed with an SSRD. Only 10% of patients had normal school attendance in the past year and approximately 40% had severe school absenteeism (i.e. missed > 1 month of school). No association was found between school absenteeism and caregiver report of learning difficulties/disabilities. Patients with severe school absenteeism were more likely to be between the ages of 15 and 17, with higher somatization and functional disability scores, higher rates of suicidal ideation and/or attempts, greater psychotropic medication use and psychiatry sessions during admission, and greater rates of discharge to a higher level of psychiatric care. Questionnaires on diagnostics and follow-up or psychotherapeutic interventions were applied comparatively rarely, in about 50 % of the patients.

    This study aimed to establish an effective nomogram to predict primary distant metastasis (DM) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) to guide the application of PET/CT.

    In total, 3591 patients with pathologically confirmed NPC were consecutively enrolled. The nomogram was constructed based on 1922 patients treated between 2007 and 2014. Multivariate logistical regression was applied to identify the independent risk factors of DM. The predictive value of the nomogram was evaluated using the concordance index (C-index), calibration curve, probability density functions (PDFs), and clinical utility curve (CUC). The results were validated in 1669 patients enrolled from 2015 to 2016. Net reclassification improvement (NRI) was applied to compare performances of the nomogram with other clinical factors. The best cut-off value of the nomogram chosen for clinical application was analyzed.

Sex, N stage, EBV DNA level, lactate dehydrogenase level, and hemoglobin level were independent predictive factors for primary DM.     It has been well elucidated that multiple types of cancers are at high risk of thrombosis. Several studies have indicated the prognostic value of fibrinogen (Fib) and D-dimer (DD) in prostate cancer (PCa). However, it remains unclear regarding the association of the comprehensive coagulation markers with the clinicopathological features of PCa.

    A total of 423 pathologically diagnosed patients with PCa were consecutively collected and stratified as low-intermediate-risk or high-risk groups. The association of coagulation parameters including Fib, DD, prothrombin (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), and antithrombin III (AT-III) with clinicopathological features was determined by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.

Results indicate that the strongest determinant of perceived stress in adolescents was high neuroticism. Multiple species were identified in both floating green macroalgae and micro-propagules , while their abundances showed distinct spatial variations. The floating macroalgal biomass was widespread in the northern Subei Shoal and most abundant at 34°N. We tested this prediction with the convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) which has biparental care that is both complex and flexible. In this species, each parent can perform all parental roles but typically shows a division of labor in which males typically defend against offspring predators while the female typically provides direct care to the offspring. At various times, the parents briefly switch roles. Our experiments revealed that pairs that remained together for two consecutive broods were more consistent in their parental behaviors, including time they spent near the intruder and in the nest compared to pairs that were comprised of individuals that had previously mated with other partners. Also individuals that remained with the same partner were also more consistent as a parental unit, maintaining their sex-specific roles of males defending aggressively against an intruder and females spending more time directly caring for young. While our experiment clearly support our prediction that individuals do develop unique coordination with specific individuals, convict cichlids in nature appear to be largely serially monogamous in which they mate only once before changing partners. Thus, it is likely this coordination may be available in many species that have biparental care but become adaptive when repeated matings become common.
    Spinal fibroblastic and myofibroblastic tumors (FMTs) are extremely rare. Few studies have reported on the features and outcomes of this condition that affects the axial skeleton. We explored the clinical characteristics and factors affecting the prognosis of spinal FMTs.

    We retroactively assessed the survival of 51 patients with spinal FMTs who underwent surgical and adjuvant treatments in our center between April 2006 and September 2018. Factors affecting disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Variables with
    value ≤ 0.05 were subjected to multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. A two-sided
    value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

    The mean follow-up period was 50.8 ±35.6 months (Range 4.2-172.6). Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that the 5-year DFS was 10% (95% CI [31.09-42.56]) and the 5-year OS was 53% (95% CI [61.28-97.20]). Multivariate analysis showed that en bloc excision was associated with better DFS (HR 0.214, 0.011) and OS (HR 0.273, 0.043), radiotherapy negatively affected OS (HR 0.353, 0.033), and the recurrence and Ki-67 index <5% significantly affected DFS (HR 3.008, 0.008 and 2.754, 0.029).

This group belongs to one of the largest insect families and it is distributed across Palearctic. Orthocephalus bivittatus, O. brevis, O. saltator and O. vittipennis are distributed across Europe and Asia; O. coriaceus, O. fulvipes, O. funestus, O. proserpinae have more limited distribution. Niche comparison using ENMTools was also undertaken to compare the niches of these species, and to test whether the niches of closely related species with trans-Palearctic distributions are more similar to each other, than to other congeners. It has been found that climatic niche models of all trans-Palearctic species under study are similar but are not identical to each other.

  • This is the first demonstration of laser-induced simultaneous extraction and detection of single RhB molecules in solution.Indocyanine green (ICG), a near-infrared (NIR) agent with an excellent imaging performance, has captivated enormous interest from researchers owing to its excellent therapeutic and imaging abilities. Although various nanoplatforms-based drug delivery systems (DDS) with the ability to overcome the clinical limitations of ICG has been reported, ICG-medicated conventional cancer diagnosis and photorelated therapies still lack in exhibiting the therapeutic efficacy, resulting in incomplete or partly tumor elimination. In the view of addressing these concerns, various DDSs have been engineered for the efficient codelivery of combined therapeutic agents with ICG, aiming to achieve promising therapeutic results due to multifunctional imaging-guided synergistic antitumor effects. In this article, we will systematically review currently available nanoplatforms based on polymers, inorganic, proteins, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), among others, for codelivery of ICG along with other therapeutic agents, providing a foundation for future clinical development of ICG. In addition, codelivery systems for ICG and different mechanism-based therapeutic agents will be illustrated. The thin films with the SSM showed circular dichroism signals, with the sign opposite to those observed in (S)-P3MBT films. These findings suggest that the orientation-controlled SSM layers induced changes in the packing of the polymer aggregates in the films, resulting in a dramatic change in the excitonic interactions of the chiral semiconducting polymers.Implants can induce a foreign body reaction that leads to chronic inflammation and fibrosis in the surrounding tissue. Macrophages help detect the foreign material, play a role in the inflammatory response, and may promote fibrosis instead of the desired tissue regeneration around implants. Implant surface properties impact macrophage responses by changing the nature of the adsorbed protein layer, but conflicting studies highlight the complexity of this relationship. In this study, the effect of surface chemistry on macrophage behavior was investigated with poly(styrene) surfaces containing common functional groups at similar surface densities. The protein layer was characterized to identify the proteins that adsorbed on the surfaces from the medium and the proteins secreted onto the surfaces by adherent macrophages. Of the surface chemistries studied, carboxylic acid (COOH) groups promoted anti-inflammatory responses from unstimulated macrophages and did not exacerbate inflammation upon stimulation. These surfaces also enhanced the adsorption of proteins involved in integrin signaling and promoted the secretion of proteins related to angiogenesis, integrin signaling, and cytokine signaling, which have been previously associated with improved biomaterial integration. Herein, we present a parahydrogen enrichment equipment which substantially improves upon the previous generators with its ability to enrich parahydrogen to >98.5% and a production rate of up to 4 standard liters per minute with the added advantage of real-time quantification. Our generator employs a pulsed injection system with a 3/16 in. outside diameter copper spiral tubing filled with iron-oxide catalyst. This tubing is mated to a custom-made copper attachment to provide efficient thermal coupling to the cold head. This device allows for robust operation at high pressures up to 34 atm. Real-time quantification by benchtop NMR spectroscopy is made possible by direct coupling of the p-H2 outlet from the generator to a 1.4 T NMR spectrometer using a regular 5 mm NMR tube that is continuously refilled with the exiting parahydrogen gas at ∼8 atm pressure. Macrophages help detect the foreign material, play a role in the inflammatory response, and may promote fibrosis instead of the desired tissue regeneration around implants. Implant surface properties impact macrophage responses by changing the nature of the adsorbed protein layer, but conflicting studies highlight the complexity of this relationship. In this study, the effect of surface chemistry on macrophage behavior was investigated with poly(styrene) surfaces containing common functional groups at similar surface densities. The protein layer was characterized to identify the proteins that adsorbed on the surfaces from the medium and the proteins secreted onto the surfaces by adherent macrophages. Of the surface chemistries studied, carboxylic acid (COOH) groups promoted anti-inflammatory responses from unstimulated macrophages and did not exacerbate inflammation upon stimulation. These surfaces also enhanced the adsorption of proteins involved in integrin signaling and promoted the secretion of proteins related to angiogenesis, integrin signaling, and cytokine signaling, which have been previously associated with improved biomaterial integration. The Multisource Assessment of Children's Social Competence Scale and the Peer Network and Dyadic Loneliness Scale were completed at the age of 11. Profiles of social competence and loneliness were labelled as low, average or high.

    A total of 172 preterm-born and 134 term-born adolescents returned the questionnaires. Most frequently, preterm adolescents reported a profile of average social competence and average levels of loneliness. Preterm-born boys reported a profile of low social functioning less often (preterm-born 36% vs. term-born 54%), and preterm-born girls reported a profile of high social functioning less frequently (preterm-born 26% vs. term-born 37%) than same-sex controls. Comparing the highest with the lowest quartile intake of postdiagnostic total BCAA, the multivariable HRs were 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75-1.85, P for trend = .46 across quartiles) for CRC-specific mortality and 1.30 (95% CI, 1.01-1.69, P for trend = .04) for all-cause mortality. Excellent linearity (r > 0.999) was obtained over the calibration range from 0.001 to 0.1 μg mL-1 . The recoveries (intra-day and inter-day) of CYCP and NK-1375 from different matrices ranged from 74 to 112%, with corresponding relative standard deviations less than 13%. The limits of quantitation of these two compounds were defined at 0.01 mg kg-1 . This study can be useful for the subsequent analytical or toxicological research on this important pesticide metabolite.
    Presacral schwannomas are rare tumors. Due to their benign nature and slow growth, these tumors are often giant and become difficult to treat. Their removal is a surgical challenge with different strategies reported in the literature. This study presents the consecutives cases of presacral schwannomas operated on in our institution, our surgical strategy and literature review.

    This retrospective study includes all consecutive patients operated on for a pre-sacral schwannoma in our department between 2006 and 2019, i.e. 6 patients. We report clinical features, pre and post-operative imaging, surgical data and post-operative outcomes.

    All patients had symptoms before surgery (constipation, dysuria, radicular or lower **** pain) with an average duration of 7.4 months. All patients underwent an MRI and a CT scan before the surgery. Five patients had type III schwannoma according to Klimo classification and one patient had a type II. The average size was 504,9 cm
    (range 53,1-1495,4). All the patients were operated on by an anterior approach in a double team with an mean duration of 246 min.

  • Glomus tumors, or glomangiomas, are benign vascular tumors typically seen at distal extremities. These tumors differ from paragangliomas and classically present in the female population between the 4th and 5th decade. Intracranial localizations have not been described in literature in the adult population.

    We present a case of a 32 year-old woman with a 3 months history of progressive left-sided visual loss and headache. A pre-operative MRI showed a homogeneously enhancing lesion extending from the left cavernous sinus to middle cranial fossa at first suspected to be a cavernous sinus meningioma. Eventually, histopathological analysis concluded for a glomangioma diagnosis. Post-operative RT was also performed.

    From our experience it is very important for clinical management considering glomangiomas in differential diagnosis of a homogeneously enhancing extra axial mass. Subtotal resection followed by radiation therapy determined no recurrence of the disease up to 7 years.

The risk of malignant transformation was significantly higher among OLP patients who smoked (OR=2,5 P< 0,05), consumed alcohol (OR=3 P< 0,05), came from the province with a ratio province city of 4,51 and had the reticular form (44.4%).

    Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an oral subtype of lichen planus with a prevalence in the world population estimated between 0.22% and 5% and an incidence approximately of 2.2%. The analysis of our results revealed an important information about the prevalence of malignant transformation, which is 9.37%.

    The transformation of the oral lichen planus may not be as rare as one would expect. The malignant transformation rates of OLP are underestimated due essentially to restrictive diagnostic criteria, inadequate follow-up periods, and/or low quality of studies. Close surveillance is mandatory to monitoring the growth and evolution of lesions in order to reduce the morbidity of OSCC.

    Gunshot injuries of the viscerocranium are rarely reported. Penetrating wounds to the cranio-maxillofacial region pose a significant challenge for surgeons as they often comprise serious soft tissue, bone and cerebral defects. We present a case report of a 42-year old female with a gunshot wound to the viscerocranium after suicidal attempt. Series of image of the disease course are available.

At the arrival GCS was 8/15 and general examination showed the inlet wound in the submental region whereas the outlet one in the left temporal skull area. After first rescue procedures, ICP was monitored before proceeding surgically. Due to massive hemorrhage, embolization of ianternal maxillary artery was performed. Afterwards, tracheostomy, surgical reduction of multiple maxillo-facial fractures and ocular avulsion were performed. In a second time, ICP monitoring and CT scan revealed ICH signs due to intraparenchimal injures. The patient underwent to a second surgical procedure, consisting of bifrontal decompressive craniectomy. The patient was discharged on 20th post-op day to a rehabilitation center. She returned to our department after 4 months to perform a craniomaxillofacial recostruction. She presented 15 in GCS, left ptosis, left VII cranial nerve deficit, decannulated, KPS 100%.

    A step-to-step multidisciplinary approach both with Neurosurgeons and Maxillo-facial surgeons is mandatory in Cranial Gunshot Injuries where extensive damage is linked to a higher mortality.

Among the carbon nanostructures, the most common are graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and carbon nanospheres (CNSs). Unlike CNTs and CNSs, graphene is difficult to obtain in mass production, limiting their applications. Regarding CNTs and CNSs, the latter presents better catalytic activity. Nonetheless, the process of synthesis of CNSs with metal inside is commonly made by time-consuming autoclave processes, some involving more than 43 h, and hence are expensive. Here, we suggest an advantageous synthesis of CNSs with an iron-nickel alloy encapsulated inside, by using a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process in less than 3 h.

This research thus not only offers benefits for commercial juice preparation but also provides new insight into effects of shape differences in concentration technologies.
    Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assess patients' perspectives on their health status, providing opportunities to improve the quality of care. While PROMs are increasingly used in high-income settings, limited data are available on PROMs use for diabetes and hypertension in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). This scoping review aimed to determine how PROMs are employed for diabetes and hypertension care in LMICs.

    We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and ClinicalTrials.gov for English-language studies published between August 2009 and August 2019 that measured at least one PROM related to diabetes or hypertension in LMICs. Full texts of included studies were examined to assess study characteristics, target population, outcome focus, PROMs used, and methods for data collection and reporting.

    Sixty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria and reported on PROMs for people diagnosed with hypertension and/or diabetes and receiving care in health facilities. Thirty-nine (57%) reported on upper-middle-incalth information systems would best establish PROMs as a means to reveal the effectiveness of person-centered diabetes and hypertension care.
    PROMs are deployed in LMICs around the world, with greatest reported use in LMICs with an upper-middle-income classification. Diabetes PROMs were more widely deployed in LMICs than hypertension PROMs, suggesting an opportunity to adapt PROMs for hypertension. After calculating each bronchus length, we categorized the branching mode of the analyzed bronchi based on whether the parent bronchus was divided after generation of the analyzed bronchi. All lobar bronchi were formed with monopodial branching. Twenty-five bifurcations were analyzed to categorize the branching mode of the segmental and subsegmental bronchi; 22 bifurcations were categorized as monopodial branching, two bifurcations were not categorized as any branching pattern, and the only lingular bronchus that bifurcated from the left superior lobar bronchus was categorized as dipodial branching. The left superior lobar bronchus did not shorten during the period from CS17 or CS18, when the child branch was generated, to CS23. All analyzed bronchi that could be categorized, except for one, were categorized as monopodial branching. The branching modes of the lobar bronchus and segmental bronchus were similar in the mouse lung and human lung; however, the modes of the subsegmental bronchi were different. Furthermore, remodeling, such as shrinkage of the bronchus, was not observed during the analysis period. Our three-dimensional reconstructions allowed precise calculation of the bronchus length, thereby improving the knowledge of branching morphogenesis in the human embryonic lung.

    Neudesin is a protein that is secreted from adipose tissue and central nervous system and has a regulatory function on energy metabolism. Although the effect of this protein is shown in the experimental model of type-2 diabetes mellitus (Type-2DM), its effect in humans is not clearly known. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum neudesin level and metabolic, anthropometric and cardiovascular parameters in newly diagnosed Type-2 DM patients (Group 1).

    Forty patients in each were included in our study for Group 1 and for the control group (Group 2), which consisted of age and sex-matched healthy subjects. Serum neudesin, hs-CRP, carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), body mass index (BMI) and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels were compared prospectively.

    Serum neudesin levels were significantly higher in diabetic patients than in the control group (Type 2 DM = 64.69 ± 3.06 ng / ml, Control = 55.52 ± 5.48 ng / ml, P = 0.004 *). There was an independent relationship between serum neudesin and HOMA-IR and BMI. Although there is a correlation between serum neudesin and CIMT ; this feature disappeared in the regression analysis.

In this paper, a descriptive range of the deviation based on the reconstruction-based techniques is proposed. Most anomaly detection approaches are considered black box models, predicting whether an event should be considered an anomaly or not. This paper proposes a method for increasing the transparency and explainability of reconstruction-based anomaly detection to indicate which parts of a system contribute to the deviation from expected behaviour. The results show that the proposed methods detect abnormal behaviour in air compressors accurately and reliably and indicate why it deviates. The proposed approach is capable of detecting faults without the need for historical examples of similar faults. However, the ceramic membrane, due to the smaller pore diameter, allowed obtaining a better quality permeate. All the membranes used were highly susceptible to fouling with the components of the clarified broths and yeast suspensions. The significant impact of the feed flow velocity and fermentation broth composition on the relative permeate flux has been demonstrated. Suitable cleaning agents with selected concentration and duration of action effectively cleaned the ceramic membrane.
