  • Ammonia can be produced by the respiration and excretion of fish during the farming process, which can affect the life of fish. In this paper, to research the behavior of fish under different ammonia concentration and make the corresponding judgment and early warning for the abnormal behavior of fish, the different ammonia environments are simulated by adding the ammonium chloride into the water. Different from the existing methods of directly artificial observation or artificial marking, this paper proposed a recognition and analysis of behavior trajectory approach based on deep learning. Firstly, the three-dimensional spatial trajectories of fish are drawn by three-dimensional reconstruction. Then, the influence of different concentrations of ammonia on fish is analyzed according to the behavior trajectory of fish in different concentrations of ammonia. The results of comparative experiments show that the movement of fish and vitality decrease significantly, and the fish often stagnates in the water of containing ammonium chloride. Breads containing walnuts were characterized by the highest content of these nutrients. The bread with a 9% walnut content by the smallest volume (380 cm3) had lowest value of L*. The crumb of the enriched breads was characterized by greater hardness, gumminess and chewiness, the values of these parameters generally increasing in parallel to the nut content. Breads enriched with walnuts were characterized by a higher average total content of polyphenols (35.77 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g dry mass (DM)) compared to the breads enriched with walnuts (25.35 mg GAE/100 g DM).Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma has limited treatment options, but there has been extensive growth recently with cabozantinib, regorafenib, lenvatinib, nivolumab, atezolizumab, and bevacizumab, which are some of the treatments that have received FDA approval just over the last three years. Other novel immune-based approaches and oncolytic viruses are in the early phases of clinical evaluation. It can scan IP addresses in any range with any ports. This is a very fast, installation-free, cross-platform IP address and port scanning tool. This process holds promising potential in the field of cancer treatment and has been proven to be more effective than conventional therapeutics. Hence, we aimed to develop cement compositions that are capable of the hyperthermia treatment of bone tumors. To achieve that central goal, we incorporated iron oxide (Fe3O4), a ferromagnetic material, into monetite and hypothesized that, upon the application of a magnetic field, magnetite will generate heat and ablate the tumor cells near the implantation site. The results confirmed that an optimized content of magnetite incorporation in monetite can generate heat in the range of 40-45 °C upon the application of a magnetic field. Furthermore, the compositions were bioactive and cytocompatible with an osteoblastic cell line.

  • While Rho-signalling controlling vascular contraction is a canonical mechanism, with the modern approaches used in research, we are advancing our understanding and details into this pathway are often uncovered. RhoA-mediated Rho-kinase is the major regulator of vascular smooth muscle cells and a key player manoeuvring other functions in these cells. The discovery of new interactions, such as oxidative stress and hydrogen sulphide with Rho signalling are emerging addition not only in the physiology of the smooth muscle, but especially in the pathophysiology of vascular diseases. Likewise, the interplay between ageing and Rho-kinase in the vasculature has been recently considered. Importantly, in smooth muscle contraction, this pathway may also be affected by sex hormones, and consequently, sex-differences. This review provides an overview of Rho signalling mediating vascular contraction and focuses on recent topics discussed in the literature affecting this pathway such as ageing, sex differences and oxidative stress.The oxygen-evolving complex is integrated into photosystem (PSII). An essential part of oxygenic photosynthetic apparatus, embedded in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts. The OEC is a super catalyst to split water into molecular oxygen in the presence of light. The OEC consist of four Mn atoms, one Ca atom and five oxygen atoms (CaMn4O5) and this cluster is maintained by its surrounding proteins viz., PsbQ, PsbP, PsbO, PsbR. The function of this super catalyst with a high turnover frequency of 500 s-1 in standard condition. Chlorophyll a fluorescence (OJIP transients) are used to understand structural and functional cohesion of photosynthetic apparatus. A further K-peak in OJIP curve reflects damage at the OEC donor site in response to salinity, drought, and high temperature. The decline in performance indices (PI, SFI) also revealed structural damage of photosynthetic apparatus that leads to disruption of electron transport rate under abiotic conditions. Telehealth has been used as a solution by many different health care services. However, it has not been as widely used in cancer care. In 2018, the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pittsburgh Healthcare System expanded the use of telehealth to provide antineoplastic therapies to rural patients by creating a clinical video telehealth clinic of the Virtual Cancer Care Network. This allows oncologists located at the tertiary center to virtually deliver care to remote sites. The recent COVID-19 pandemic forced oncologists across the VA system to adopt telehealth to provide continuity of care. On the basis of our review and personal experience, we have outlined opportunities for telehealth to play a role in every step of the cancer care journey from diagnosis to therapy to surveillance to clinical trials for medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. There are many advantages, such as decreased travel time and potential cost savings; however, there continues to be challenges with veterans having access to devices and the Internet as well as understanding how to use telehealth equipment. The lessons learned from this assessment of the VA telehealth system for cancer care can be adopted and integrated into other health systems. In the future, there needs to be evaluation of how telehealth can be further incorporated into oncology, satisfaction of veterans using telehealth services, overcoming telehealth barriers, and defining metrics of success.

While pollution of coastal and inland water bodies has received considerable attention to date, there is limited information on potential interactive effects between radionuclides and metals. Whether by accidental or controlled release, such contaminants co-exist in aquatic ecosystems and can pose an enhanced threat to biota. Using a range of biological responses, the study aimed to evaluate relative interactive effects on representative freshwater and marine bivalve species.

    An integrated, multi-biomarker approach was adopted to investigate response to copper (Cu, 18

    ), a known environmentally relevant genotoxic metal and differing concentrations of phosphorus-32 (

In turn, environmental protective strategies deemed suitable in protecting biota from a single, isolated stressor may not be wholly adequate.Imprinted genes are differentially expressed in a parent-of-origin-specific manner. Parental origin of the alleles is discriminated by intragenic DNA polymorphisms. Comparisons of parental allelic expression have been analysed by semiquantitative RT-PCR. Here, we developed a novel quantitative method for allelic expression of the imprinted gene Ube3a, which inactivation and mutations cause Angelman syndrome and predominantly expressed by the maternal allele in neuronal tissues. In this method, cDNA was amplified by droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) coupled with allele-specific locked nucleic acid (LNA) TaqMan probes, which labelled by FAM and HEX were designed to detect the SNPs in the target regions. ddPCR assay demonstrated that the sense transcript of Ube3a was equally expressed from both parental alleles in adult tissues except neuronal tissues, where Ube3a expression from the paternal allele was about 10 to 14% of total Ube3a expression in adult brain, and 20% in spinal cord. The antisense transcript of Ube3a was expressed at 60% to 70% of the sense transcript of Ube3a in adult brain.

  • Background Our objective was to determine associations of occupational exposures with cardiac structure and function in Hispanic/Latino adults. Methods and Results Employed participants were included (n=782; 52% women, mean age 52.9 years). Occupational exposures to burning wood, vehicle exhaust, solvents, pesticides, and metals at the current and longest-held job were assessed by questionnaire. Survey multivariable linear regression analyses were used to model the relationship of each self-reported exposure with echocardiographic measures of cardiac structure and function. Exposure to burning wood at the current job was associated with decreased left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (-3.1%; standard error [SE], 1.0 [P=0.002]). When the analysis was restricted to exposure at the longest-held job, occupational exposure to burning wood was associated with increased LV diastolic volume (6.7 mL; SE, 1.6 [P less then 0.0001]), decreased LV ejection fraction (-2.7%; SE, 0.6 [P less then 0.0001]), worse LV global longitudinal strain (1.0%; SE, 0.3 [P=0.0009]), and decreased right ventricular fractional area change (-0.02; SE, 0.004 [P less then 0.001]). Exposure to pesticides was associated with worse average global longitudinal strain (0.8%; SE, 0.2 [P less then 0.0001]). Exposure to metals was associated with worse global longitudinal strain in the 2-chamber view (1.0%; SE, 0.5 [P=0.04]), increased stroke volume (3.6 mL; SE, 1.6 [P=0.03]), and increased LV mass indexed to BSA (9.2 g/m2; SE, 3.8 [P=0.01]) or height (4.4 g/m2.7; SE, 1.9 [P=0.02]). Conclusions Occupational exposures to burning wood, vehicle exhaust, pesticides, and metals were associated with abnormal parameters of LV and right ventricular systolic function. Reducing exposures to toxic chemicals and particulates in the workplace is a potential opportunity to prevent cardiovascular disease in populations at risk.
    The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of rotigotine under daily clinical practice in Parkinson's disease patients.

    The study was a prospective, non-interventional, observational study targeting patients who were treated with rotigotine for the first time, with a 1-year follow-up period from September 2013 to August 2016.

    There were 603 patients in the safety population and 599 patients in the effectiveness population. The mean age was 71.6 years, and the age group of ≥65 and ≥80 years accounted for 80% and 18.6% of all patients, respectively. The frequency of adverse drug reaction (ADR) was 34.3%, and common ADRs were application site reaction (20.2%), typical for transdermal patches. However, the majority of patients recovered or was recovering from these ADRs and were non-serious. Although ADRs related to non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease were observed, most of them were non-serious. Total scores of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III (UPDRS-III) (ON-time) significantly decreased from baseline in the effectiveness population. In the analysis of overall improvement in 12 months of post-treatment, ≥70% of patients achieved mild or greater improvement.     Background Our objective was to determine associations of occupational exposures with cardiac structure and function in Hispanic/Latino adults. Methods and Results Employed participants were included (n=782; 52% women, mean age 52.9 years). Occupational exposures to burning wood, vehicle exhaust, solvents, pesticides, and metals at the current and longest-held job were assessed by questionnaire. Survey multivariable linear regression analyses were used to model the relationship of each self-reported exposure with echocardiographic measures of cardiac structure and function. Exposure to burning wood at the current job was associated with decreased left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (-3.1%; standard error [SE], 1.0 [P=0.002]). When the analysis was restricted to exposure at the longest-held job, occupational exposure to burning wood was associated with increased LV diastolic volume (6.7 mL; SE, 1.6 [P less then 0.0001]), decreased LV ejection fraction (-2.7%; SE, 0.6 [P less then 0.0001]), worse LV global longitudinal strain (1.0%; SE, 0.3 [P=0.0009]), and decreased right ventricular fractional area change (-0.02; SE, 0.004 [P less then 0.001]). Exposure to pesticides was associated with worse average global longitudinal strain (0.8%; SE, 0.2 [P less then 0.0001]). The study was a prospective, non-interventional, observational study targeting patients who were treated with rotigotine for the first time, with a 1-year follow-up period from September 2013 to August 2016. There were 603 patients in the safety population and 599 patients in the effectiveness population. The mean age was 71.6 years, and the age group of ≥65 and ≥80 years accounted for 80% and 18.6% of all patients, respectively.     Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease with potential life-threatening risks. To study the natural course of HAE under therapy-free conditions throughout patient life is essential for practitioners and patients to avoid possible risk factors and guide treatment.

    A web-based survey was conducted in 103 Chinese patients with type 1 HAE. Disease progression at different age stages was provided by each participant. The data for exploring the natural course of HAE composed of two parts one came from the participants who had never adopted any prophylactic drug for HAE; the other was from the patients with a history of medication, but only the periods before they got confirmed diagnosis and received medications were analyzed. The demographic characteristics, lifestyles, disease severity, and family history were also collected.

Spearman's rank correlation among the subscales of Thai MHQ, Thai DASH and Thai EQ-5D-5L and also confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to explore construct validity. The standardized response mean (SRM) was used to evaluate the responsiveness of the Thai MHQ.

  • Clinicians should expect controversial goals of care discussions in the surgical intensive care from time to time. Differing opinions about the likelihood of meaningful recovery in patients with chronic critical illness often exist between intensive care unit providers of different disciplines. Outcome predictions presented by health-care providers are often reflections of their own point of view that is influenced by provider experience, profession, and personal values, rather than the consequence of reliable scientific evaluation. In addition, family members of intensive care unit patients often develop acute cognitive, psychologic, and physical challenges. Providers in the surgical intensive care unit should approach goals-of-care discussions in a structured and interprofessional manner. This best practice paper highlights medical, legal and ethical implications of changing goals of care from prioritizing cure to prioritizing comfort and provides tools that help physicians become effective leaders in the multi-disciplinary management of patients with challenging prognostication.In this article, we present child abuse and neglect data available in Brazilian public health system platform and in a national childline reporting channel (Dial 100) from 2011-2017. Overall, Brazil has a robust set of laws to protect its children, however, the implementation of public policies is insufficient. The pathway to solve these problems goes through increased governmental funding, intense professional training, and the adoption of an evidence-based perspective to design and implement the policies.In this paper we outline and compare pharmaceutical pricing policies for in-patent prescription pharmaceuticals with emphasis on external reference pricing (ERP) in eleven countries across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and explore possible improvements in their pricing systems. Primary and secondary evidence was used to inform our analysis. Comparative analysis of ERP systems across countries followed an analytical framework distilling ERP into twelve salient features, while ERP system performance was benchmarked against a framework of best practice principles across (a) objectives and scope, (b) administration and operations, (c) methods used, and (d) implementation. Results suggest that ERP is the dominant pricing method for in-patent pharmaceuticals. Although several good practice cases were identified, none of the eleven countries satisfy all best practice principles. ERP basket sizes vary significantly and are commonly composed using geographical proximity and low-price countries as criteria. Nine countries do not use the mean or median prices, but resort to using the lowest. Exchange rate fluctuations are routinely used to arrive at price reductions in local currency. Significant opportunities exist for MENA countries to develop their ERP regimes to achieve greater compliance with best practice principles. Over the short-term, incremental changes could be implemented to several ERP salient features and can be achieved relatively easily, thereby enhancing the functionality and performance of national ERP systems. Countries in the region can also focus on the development of explicit value assessment systems, and minimize their dependence on ERP over the longer-term.
    Obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyns) play a critical role in improving access to timely abortion care. This cross-sectional study estimates the proportion of ob-gyns providing abortion referral in the prior year and identifies predictors of direct (facilitated) referral compared with indirect referral (providing contact information).

    In 2016-2017, we invited a national sample of 2,500 ob-gyns to complete a survey. We restricted the final sample of 1,280 respondents (52% response rate) to participants who had abortion-seeking patients in the last 12months (n=868, 68% of the sample). We calculated descriptive statistics by referral type and conducted logistic regression analyses to examine associations between physician and practice setting characteristics and abortion referral type (direct vs. indirect).

Comparative analysis of ERP systems across countries followed an analytical framework distilling ERP into twelve salient features, while ERP system performance was benchmarked against a framework of best practice principles across (a) objectives and scope, (b) administration and operations, (c) methods used, and (d) implementation. Results suggest that ERP is the dominant pricing method for in-patent pharmaceuticals. Although several good practice cases were identified, none of the eleven countries satisfy all best practice principles. ERP basket sizes vary significantly and are commonly composed using geographical proximity and low-price countries as criteria. Nine countries do not use the mean or median prices, but resort to using the lowest. Exchange rate fluctuations are routinely used to arrive at price reductions in local currency. Significant opportunities exist for MENA countries to develop their ERP regimes to achieve greater compliance with best practice principles. Over the short-term, incremental changes could be implemented to several ERP salient features and can be achieved relatively easily, thereby enhancing the functionality and performance of national ERP systems. This cross-sectional study estimates the proportion of ob-gyns providing abortion referral in the prior year and identifies predictors of direct (facilitated) referral compared with indirect referral (providing contact information). In 2016-2017, we invited a national sample of 2,500 ob-gyns to complete a survey. We restricted the final sample of 1,280 respondents (52% response rate) to participants who had abortion-seeking patients in the last 12months (n=868, 68% of the sample). We calculated descriptive statistics by referral type and conducted logistic regression analyses to examine associations between physician and practice setting characteristics and abortion referral type (direct vs. indirect). Eighty-eight percent of ob-gyns provided abortion referral (479 [55%] indirect referrals; 287 [33%] direct referrals). Abortion provision in the prior year (adjusted odds ratio, 2.82; 95% confidence interals as access becomes more constrained, especially in regions where abortion facilities are limited.     Patient-led education contributes to the implementation of practical experience of working with patients in health care professional curricula. There are few descriptions of patients' involvement in pharmacists' training and most often, the patients have been used as passive props to facilitate training. More recently, greater emphasis has been given to a more active form of patient involvement but the application in the curriculum of pharmacy has not been conceptualized. Thus, the aim of our study was to implement a workshop involving patients as partners in undergraduate pharmacy educational programme, and to evaluate its impact of on students' perspectives.

    On a prospective observational study basis, the impact was assessed in terms of relevance, learning outcomes and achievement transfer using the Kirkpatrick training assessment method. In addition, we evaluated social representations of the students before and after the workshop.

    Ninety-four students attended the sessions. All participants were satisfied and emphasized the relevance of the involvement of patients. Postworkshop scores were significantly improved in both competencies to be acquired. At the end of the workshop, students reported two to three actions to implement in order to meet patients' expectations, illustrating an intent to transfer learning outcomes in professional context. Interestingly, about patients' expectations on pharmacist's role, students' social representations had evolved significantly after the session.

    With the growing threat of cancer to children's health, it is necessary to analyze characteristics and trends of childhood cancer to formulate better cancer prevention strategies.

    Data on the 430 children with cancer during 2002-2015 were collected from the Pudong Cancer Registry, diagnosed with the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology and categorized according to the International Classification of Childhood Cancer. The incidence rate, trends over time, and survival of patients grouped by sex, age, and region were explored using the Kaplan-Meier, Cox regression, and Joinpoint Regression models.

    The crude childhood cancer incidence and world age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) were 115.1/1,000,000 and 116.3/1,000,000 person-years. The two most frequent cancers were leukemia (136/430, 31.63%, ASR, 37.8/1,000,000 person-years) and central nervous system (CNS) tumors (86/430, 20.00%, ASR, 22.9/1,000,000 person-years). Our findings indicate that the survival rate for children between 10 and 15 years of age was higher than that for 5-10; and the survival rate for children who had leukemia was higher than that of children with CNS tumors.   • Pain and nicotine dependence are prevalent, co-occurring conditions posited to interact in the manner of a positive feedback loop; however, most research to date has been conducted among tobacco cigarette smokers. Initial evidence suggests that pain is a risk factor for greater e-cigarette dependence, and additional research is needed to examine covariation between pain and e-cigarette use. There is reason to suspect that pain-related anxiety (i.e., the tendency to respond to pain with anxiety or fear) may be associated with greater e-cigarette dependence and difficulty quitting, and that pain intensity and pain-related anxiety may interact to confer greater risk for e-cigarette use. The current study represents the first examination of cross-sectional associations between pain intensity, pain-related anxiety, and e-cigarette dependence, motivation to quit, history of lifetime e-cigarette quit attempts, perceived barriers to cessation, and negative expectancies during abstinence from e-cigarettes. Participants (N = 520 e-cigarette users, 52.1% female, Mage = 34.85) completed an online survey assessing health behaviors. Results indicated that pain-related anxiety was positively associated with e-cigarette dependence and perceived barriers to cessation (ps less then 0.05). Pain-related anxiety was found to moderate relations between pain intensity and primary outcomes, such that pain intensity was positively associated with motivation to quit, likelihood of past failed quit attempt, and negative abstinence expectancies among participants who endorsed high (but not moderate or low) levels of pain-related anxiety. Future research would benefit from examining prospective associations between pain-related anxiety, pain intensity, and e-cigarette use/cessation trajectories among individuals with chronic pain.
    Post-transplant maintenance provides progression-free survival benefit in multiple myeloma (MM). Here we report our institution's experience with elotuzumab-based maintenance following autologous stem cell transplant.

    We retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of MM patients who were started on elotuzumab-based maintenance (elotuzumab/lenalidomide/dexamethasone, elotuzumab/bortezomib/dexamethasone, or elotuzumab/bortezomib/methylprednisolone) following transplant (N=7). Baseline characteristics, treatment response, survival, and adverse events were reviewed.

    Median age was 68 (56-81) years at the time of transplant, and median lines of induction therapy was 2 (1-6). Three patients (42.9%) had high-risk cytogenetics and five (71.4%) had stage II or greater disease at diagnosis. At a median follow-up of 24months (12-50), five patients (71.4%) had improvement of quality of response, with a combined CR or VGPR rate increasing from 57.1% to 100% (CR=3, VGPR=4). All patients were alive without relapse or progression at the time of this analysis. Grade 3-4 adverse events were observed in three (42.9%) patients. None of the patients discontinued the treatment due to intolerance.

    Our study demonstrates that elotuzumab-based maintenance may deepen response post-transplant in MM and can be safely administered even in older patients. Given its unique action and rare side effects, further studies of elotuzumab in the post-transplant setting are warranted.

Fluorescence spectroscopy is a tool that has been of utility in the diagnosis of different diseases based on biopsy analysis. Thus, fluorescence study of liver samples with five different degrees of fibrosis is presented. Paraffin-preserved human liver tissue was provided on white plastic cassettes by the Hospital General de Mexico "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga". Specimens were diagnosed by two independent-senior pathologists in a double-blind test and classified into five different groups F0, F1, F2, F3, and F4, according to the METAVIR scale for liver fibrosis. Fluorescence spectroscopy measurements were performed using three different excitation wavelengths 385, 405, and 450 nm. Besides, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements were taken with white light to determine morphological changes in the tissue and to compare the results with medical diagnosis. The spectral analysis at excitation wavelengths of 385 nm and 405 nm showed poor correlation with medical diagnosis. The absorbance in peptide region and fluorescence intensity of BMP - 2 was quenched in presence of CS; thus, confirming the formation of a ground-state complex. As there was an increase in Stern-Volmer constant observed as a function of temperature, idea of dynamic quenching was established. However, the negligible changes in lifetime indicated static quenching; thus, making the process a combination of static-dynamic quenching. Basically, the protein - glycan interaction was driven by entropy of the system and mediated by hydrophobic interactions. Secondary structure (CD spectroscopy) of native protein was significantly affected (intensity became more negative) in presence of CS, thus, introducing more compactness in the protein.

  • The volatile biomarkers of the alkanes and methylated alkanes are related to oxidative and lipid peroxidation of the cell membrane. The lung alveolar cell model has the potential to explore the volatile biomarkers of particulate-induced lung injury.We study the joint effect of the non-linearity of interactions and noise on coevolutionary dynamics. We choose the coevolving voter model as a prototype framework for this problem. By numerical simulations and analytical approximations we find three main phases that differ in the absolute magnetisation and the size of the largest component a consensus phase, a coexistence phase, and a dynamical fragmentation phase. More detailed analysis reveals inner differences in these phases, allowing us to divide two of them further. In the consensus phase we can distinguish between a weak or alternating consensus and a strong consensus, in which the system remains in the same state for the whole realisation of the stochastic dynamics. In the coexistence phase we distinguish a fully-mixing phase and a structured coexistence phase, where the number of active links drops significantly due to the formation of two homogeneous communities. Our numerical observations are supported by an analytical description using a pair approximation approach and an ad-hoc calculation for the transition between the coexistence and dynamical fragmentation phases. Many current models of amyloid deposition diseases posit that the most toxic species are oligomers that form either along the pathway to forming fibrils or in competition with their formation, making it even more critical to understand the kinetics of fibrillization. A recently introduced topological model for aggregation based on network Hamiltonians is capable of recapitulating the entire process of amyloid fibril formation, beginning with thousands of free monomers and ending with kinetically accessible and thermodynamically stable amyloid fibril structures. The model can be parameterized to match the five topological classes encompassing all amyloid fibril structures so far discovered in the PDB. This paper introduces a set of network statistical and topological metrics for quantitative analysis and characterization of the fibrillization mechanisms predicted by the network Hamiltonian model. The results not only provide insight into different mechanisms leading to similar fibril structures, but also offer targets for future experimental exploration into the mechanisms by which fibrils form.The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a surge in demand for facemasks to protect against disease transmission. In response to shortages, many public health authorities have recommended homemade masks as acceptable alternatives to surgical masks and N95 respirators. Although mask wearing is intended, in part, to protect others from exhaled, virus-containing particles, few studies have examined particle emission by mask-wearers into the surrounding air. Here, we measured outward emissions of micron-scale aerosol particles by healthy humans performing various expiratory activities while wearing different types of medical-grade or homemade masks. Both surgical masks and unvented KN95 respirators, even without fit-testing, reduce the outward particle emission rates by 90% and 74% on average during speaking and coughing, respectively, compared to wearing no mask, corroborating their effectiveness at reducing outward emission. These masks similarly decreased the outward particle emission of a coughing superemitter, who for unclear reasons emitted up to two orders of magnitude more expiratory particles via coughing than average. In contrast, shedding of non-expiratory micron-scale particulates from friable cellulosic fibers in homemade cotton-fabric masks confounded explicit determination of their efficacy at reducing expiratory particle emission. Audio analysis of the speech and coughing intensity confirmed that people speak more loudly, but do not cough more loudly, when wearing a mask. Further work is needed to establish the efficacy of cloth masks at blocking expiratory particles for speech and coughing at varied intensity and to assess whether virus-contaminated fabrics can generate aerosolized fomites, but the results strongly corroborate the efficacy of medical-grade masks and highlight the importance of regular washing of homemade masks.Abundance profiling via 16S rRNA targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) is a common procedure to characterize mixtures of prokaryotic populations inhabiting an environment.   • COVID-19 patients in the critical care unit tend to have prolonged hospital stay requiring high doses of sedation and paralysis to treat acute respiratory distress syndrome, resulting in a shortage of these drugs. In our hospital, we have instituted strategies to rationalise drug and oxygen usage. We assess the impact of COVID-19 on psychiatric symptoms in healthcare workers, those with psychiatric comorbidities, and the general population. We highlight the challenges ahead and discuss the increased relevance of telepsychiatry. We analyzed all available literature available as of March 25, 2020, on PubMed, Ovid Medline, and PsychInfo. We utilized the MeSH term "covid AND (psychiatry OR mental health)" and included all articles. Duplicates were removed resulting in 32 articles, of which 19 are cited. Four additional references are included to examine suicide data. During the review process, an additional 7 articles were identified which are also included. Frontline healthcare workers are currently experiencing increased psychiatric symptoms and this is more severe in females and nurses. Non-frontline healthcare workers, as well as the general population, are experiencing vicarious traumatization. People with psychiatric comorbidities, and the general population, face increased psychiatric symptom burden. Migrant workers, the elderly, children, and the homeless may be disproportionately impacted. Suicide rates may be impacted. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a severe disruption to the delivery of mental healthcare. Psychiatric facilities are facing unprecedented disruptions in care provision as they struggle to manage an infected population with comorbid psychiatric symptoms. Telepsychiatry is a flawed but reasonable solution to increase the availability of mental healthcare during COVID-19.The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), started at the beginning of December 2019, in Wuhan, Hubei, China. Since then, the disease has been spreading quickly all over the world with dramatic consequences for global health. That is the reason why it was declared pandemic since March 11th, 2020. The clinical presentation of SARS-CoV-2 is quite variable. Respiratory symptoms dominate its clinical manifestations, but based on current observations, it can significantly affect the heart as well, thus leading to myocardial injury. Imaging plays a key role in the cardiovascular management of these patients, with the aim of improving their outcomes. Furthermore, a large part of this difference in number of deaths is caused by gender behavior (lifestyle), i.e., higher levels of smoking and drinking among men compared to women. Lastly, studies reported that women had more responsible attitude toward the Covid-19 pandemic than men. Irresponsible attitude among men reversibly affect their undertaking of preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing of face mask, and stay at home orders.As the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection spreads globally, physicians and physician-scientists are confronted with an enlarging body of literature about the nature of this pandemic. Understanding the current epidemiological models for disease spread, mortality, and recovery is more important than ever before. One of the most relevant mathematical models relating to the spread of a pandemic is the susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) model. Other models worth exploring are the susceptible-exposed-infectious-removed (SEIR) and the susceptible-unquarantined-quarantined-confirmed (SUQC) model.To assess the effects of various oral care methods on the incidence of VAP in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in intensive care units, an exhaustive literature search was undertaken using MEDLINE as well as a manual review of the relevant literature and citations. Eight publications were selected for this review. The primary endpoint was the incidence of VAP. Different oral care methods for preventing VAP were the subject of this review. Two studies that were reviewed in this article showed significant statistical difference between the intervention group and the control group regarding different oral care for lowering the incidence of VAP. The rest of the studies showed no significant statistical difference between the intervention group and the control group, but showed the importance of meticulous oral hygiene in those patients. Mechanically ventilated patients who suffer from poor oral hygiene are exposed to the harmful accumulation of oral plaque and the initiation of VAP. Proper oral care by qualified care givers can reduce the incidence of VAP.

  • A cross sectional study design was used based on 2 questionnaires; Rosenmoller et al's and the WHO STEPS surveillance tool for chronic disease surveillance. Data on length of residency, dietary patterns, anthropometric and biochemical measurements were collected by trained interviewers. Descriptive statistics were reported as a percentage or mean, as appropriate. Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test or independent t test, Univariate and Multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to compare the significance between variables.

    Both male and female participants showed a similar mean age (39.7 and 38.5 years). Approximately 61% of them had <5 year's duration of residency. Significant gender differences were observed in blood pressure and biochemical measurements, with men showing higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure and dyslipidemia than women (
    < .001). Women had significantly higher BMI (
    < .001), showed higher mean food practice (
    < .001) and awareness scores than men.

    Migration into Saudi Arabia from this subgroup showed marked changes in the food practice; acquisition of unhealthy dietary practices also co-existed despite improved awareness and the presence of comorbidities. Despite this growing body of research, little has been conducted to understand the factors associated with HRQoL among uninsured/underinsured Americans. The purposes of the present study were to assess clinic staff to determine (1) whether there is a need to examine HRQoL among uninsured/underinsured individuals, (2) whether there is a need for tailored HRQoL-promoting interventions among uninsured/underinsured individuals, and (3) the factors associated with HRQoL among uninsured/underinsured individuals. A survey was sent to an association of 41 clinics that provides free medical services to uninsured/underinsured individuals. The majority of participants indicated that uninsured/underinsured individuals experience unique factors associated with HRQoL and that there was a need to implement tailored HRQoL-improving interventions among uninsured/underinsured individuals. The results also present the personal/contextual factors associated with HRQoL of uninsured/underinsured individuals.The physical demands of mixed martial arts (MMA) training and competition is not yet well quantified. The Applied Research Model for the Sport Sciences (ARMSS) provides a framework through which to conduct sport science, determining pertinent questions to test research findings in real-world settings. The aim of this review was to evaluate MMA research within the context of ARMSS to critically analyse our understanding of the physical requirements of MMA training and competition. Research databases were searched, with 70 peer-reviewed articles being discussed in relation to the specific stage of the ARMSS in which their results best fit. MMA research was found to be mostly foundational and descriptive in nature and has generally not developed along systematic lines. The internal and external loads and responses to training and competition have not been adequately identified. Therefore, it is not currently possible to state which variables are key predictors of success, or how coaches can optimally manipulate these variables. We propose that MMA research be refocused to be conducted within ARMSS. Specifically, stage 2 studies describing the physical, physiological and technical demands of MMA training and competition, and stage 3 studies determining the physiological predictors of performance should be initially prioritised.

    A cross sectional study design was used based on 2 questionnaires; Rosenmoller et al's and the WHO STEPS surveillance tool for chronic disease surveillance. Data on length of residency, dietary patterns, anthropometric and biochemical measurements were collected by trained interviewers. Descriptive statistics were reported as a percentage or mean, as appropriate. Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test or independent t test, Univariate and Multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to compare the significance between variables. Both male and female participants showed a similar mean age (39.7 and 38.5 years). Approximately 61% of them had <5 year's duration of residency. Significant gender differences were observed in blood pressure and biochemical measurements, with men showing higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure and dyslipidemia than women ( < .001). Women had significantly higher BMI ( < .001), showed higher mean food practice ( < .001) and awareness scores than men. Migration into Saudi Arabia from this subgroup showed marked changes in the food practice; acquisition of unhealthy dietary practices also co-existed despite improved awareness and the presence of comorbidities. Despite this growing body of research, little has been conducted to understand the factors associated with HRQoL among uninsured/underinsured Americans. The purposes of the present study were to assess clinic staff to determine (1) whether there is a need to examine HRQoL among uninsured/underinsured individuals, (2) whether there is a need for tailored HRQoL-promoting interventions among uninsured/underinsured individuals, and (3) the factors associated with HRQoL among uninsured/underinsured individuals. A survey was sent to an association of 41 clinics that provides free medical services to uninsured/underinsured individuals. The majority of participants indicated that uninsured/underinsured individuals experience unique factors associated with HRQoL and that there was a need to implement tailored HRQoL-improving interventions among uninsured/underinsured individuals. The results also present the personal/contextual factors associated with HRQoL of uninsured/underinsured individuals.The physical demands of mixed martial arts (MMA) training and competition is not yet well quantified. The Applied Research Model for the Sport Sciences (ARMSS) provides a framework through which to conduct sport science, determining pertinent questions to test research findings in real-world settings. The aim of this review was to evaluate MMA research within the context of ARMSS to critically analyse our understanding of the physical requirements of MMA training and competition. Research databases were searched, with 70 peer-reviewed articles being discussed in relation to the specific stage of the ARMSS in which their results best fit. MMA research was found to be mostly foundational and descriptive in nature and has generally not developed along systematic lines. The internal and external loads and responses to training and competition have not been adequately identified. Therefore, it is not currently possible to state which variables are key predictors of success, or how coaches can optimally manipulate these variables. We propose that MMA research be refocused to be conducted within ARMSS. Specifically, stage 2 studies describing the physical, physiological and technical demands of MMA training and competition, and stage 3 studies determining the physiological predictors of performance should be initially prioritised. .   • High concentrations of cryoprotective agents (CPA) are required during articular cartilage cryopreservation but these CPAs can be toxic to chondrocytes. Reactive oxygen species have been linked to cell death due to oxidative stress. Addition of antioxidants has shown beneficial effects on chondrocyte survival and functions after cryopreservation. The objectives of this study were to investigate (1) oxidative stress experienced by chondrocytes and (2) the effect of antioxidants on cellular reactive oxygen species production during articular cartilage exposure to high concentrations of CPAs. Porcine cartilage dowels were exposed to a multi-CPA solution supplemented with either 0.1 mg/mL chondroitin sulfate or 2000 μM ascorbic acid, at 4 °C for 180 min (N = 7). Reactive oxygen species production was measured with 5 μM dihydroethidium, a fluorescent probe that targets reactive oxygen species. The cell viability was quantified with a dual cell membrane integrity stain containing 6.25 μM Syto 13 + 9 μM propidium iodide using confocal microscopy. Supplementation of CPA solutions with chondroitin sulfate or ascorbic acid resulted in significantly lower dihydroethidium counts (p less then 0.01), and a lower decrease in the percentage of viable cells (p less then 0.01) compared to the CPA-treated group without additives. These results indicated that reactive oxygen species production is induced when articular cartilage is exposed to high CPA concentrations, and correlated with the amount of dead cells. Pooled semen was diluted (800 × 106 sperm mL-1) with a TES-Tris-fructose extender with 6% glycerol, 15% egg yolk and supplemented with 0, 50, 100 and 200 U mL-1 catalase and packaged into 0.25 mL straws. In experiment 1, straws were equilibrated at 5 °C either for 3 h in a cold cabinet (E3) or for 10 (E10) and 22 h (E22) inside a refrigerator. In experiment 2, all straws were equilibrated for 22 h inside refrigerator. Straws were frozen at -25 °C min-1 up to -125 °C using a cell freezer and finally plunged into liquid nitrogen. The post-thaw total and rapid motility were higher (P less then 0.05) in E22 compared to E3 and E10. Sperm kinetics was comparable between E3 and E22, but lower in E10. Similarly, acrosome integrity, functional membrane integrity, percent high cholesterol (mCHO) and live-high mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were higher (P less then 0.05) while live-high intracellular calcium and acrosome-reacted sperm were lower in E22 compared to E3 and E10. The percent rapid motile, high mCHO and live-high MMP were significantly (P less then 0.05) lower in catalase-treated samples compared to the control, while the membrane integrity was comparable within the groups. Herein, we comprehensively described the state-of-the-art knowledge on the DNA-based aptamers targeting thrombin, especially focusing on the optimized analogues obtained by chemically modifying the oligonucleotide backbone, and their biological performances in therapeutic applications.As the first-line antimalarial drugs, artemisinins gained wide acceptance after the emergence of resistance to chloroquine in the 1950s. Artemisinin-based drugs have saved lives, especially in developing countries. The discovery of artemisinin was unique, timely, and fascinating, and the benefits of artemisinin were with far-reaching implications. Herein, we will give a brief description of various aspects of the development of artemisinin and discuss the position and perspectives of artemisinin-based drugs.An accelerating basic science literature is providing key insights into the mechanisms by which spinal neuropeptide Y (NPY) inhibits chronic pain. A key target of pain inhibition is the Gi-coupled neuropeptide Y1 receptor (Y1).
