  • Okara is a major agri-industrial by-product of the tofu and soymilk industries. Employing food-wastes as substrates for the green production of natural functional compounds is a recent trend that addresses the dual concepts of sustainable production and a zero-waste ecosystem.

    Extracts of unfermented okara and okara fermented with Rhizopus oligosporus were obtained using ethanol as extraction solvent, coupled with ultrasound sonication for enhanced extraction. Fermented extracts yielded significantly better results for total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) than unfermented extracts. A qualitative liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) analysis revealed a shift from glucoside forms to respective aglycone forms of the detected isoflavones, post-fermentation. Since the aglycone forms have been associated with numerous health benefits, a quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed. Fermented okara extracts had daidzein and genistein concentrations of 11.782 ± 0.325 μg mL
    and 10.125 ± 1.028 μg mL
    , as opposed to that of 6.7 ± 2.42 μg mL
    and 4.55 ± 0.316 μg mL
    in raw okara extracts, respectively. Lastly, the detected isoflavones were mapped to their metabolic pathways, to understand the biochemical reactions triggered during the fermentation process.

However, studies examining potential protective factors that moderate this association are limited. Using data from a cross-sectional study conducted in Chicago, we examined the association between BV and psychosocial functioning among a sample of heterosexual (n = 475) and SM (n = 105) African American adolescents and examined whether four empirically-supported protective factors moderated these associations. Among SM adolescents, having close parents was protective against psychosomatic symptoms for those who reported high BV and having caring teachers was protective against substance use for those who reported both high and low BV. Among heterosexual adolescents, having close parents was protective against substance use for those who reported high BV but having high neighborhood support exacerbated the risk of developing psychosomatic symptoms for those who reported high BV. Implications for school and parental-based interventions are discussed.
    Whilst the number of independent prescriber (IP) optometrists in the United Kingdom is increasing, there is limited evidence describing the experiences of these individuals. The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) provides an evidence-based approach to understand determinants of behaviour. This conceptual framework can enable mapping to the COM-B behaviour change model and the wider Behaviour Change Wheel to develop interventions to optimise behaviour-change and healthcare processes more systematically. The study aimed to use the TDF to identify the factors that influence independent prescribing behaviour, and to map these findings to the COM-B system to elucidate the relevant intervention functions, in order to identify the support required by optometrist prescribers.

    Using a qualitative design, semi-structured interviews based on the TDF were undertaken with independent prescriber optometrists. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes inductively, which were then deductively mapped to the TDF and lsions by optometrists, the findings can be used to develop a structured intervention, such as a support package to help optimise prescribing by optometrists, with the ultimate goal of eye care quality improvement.

Autophagy is a well-conserved, catabolic process that degrades excess and unwanted cytoplasmic materials and provides building blocks during starvation conditions. Thus, autophagy maintains cellular homeostasis at basal conditions and acts as a survival mechanism during stress conditions. Sporulation is an essential process that, like autophagy, is triggered due to stress conditions in yeast. It involves the formation of ascospores that protect the yeast cells during extreme conditions and germinate when the conditions are favorable.     Little is known about father's involvement in the care of children born with perinatal risk factors. This study aimed to understand father's involvement in the care of children born preterm, low birth weight (LBW) and/or with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in rural Rwanda and assess child and home environment factors associated with father involvement.

    A cross-sectional study of children born preterm, LBW or with HIE who were discharged from Kirehe District Hospital neonatal unit from May 2015 to April 2016 and those enrolled in a neonatal unit follow-up programme from May 2016 to November 2017. Interviews were conducted when the children were ages 24-47 months in the child's home. Primary caregivers reported on father involvement in parenting, home environment, child disability, and child development outcomes. Children's nutritional status were directly measured. Only children whose fathers were living in the home were included in the sample. Bivariate analyses were conducted using Fisher's exact test and Wilcoxon Rank Sum test.

  • CircRUNX1 deficiency restrained CRC cell colony formation, migration, invasion and glutaminolysis and induced apoptosis in vitro as well as blocked tumour growth in vivo. CircRUNX1 directly sponged miR-485-5p, which negatively modulated SLC38A1 expression in CRC cells. The effects of circRUNX1 knockdown on CRC cell colony formation, migration, invasion, apoptosis and glutaminolysis were reversed by miR-485-5p inhibition.     Methotrexate (MTX) is widely used in various medical specialties. However, hepatotoxicity is an ongoing concern and this is thought to be directly associated with cumulative dose. We sought to synthesise the published literature to evaluate the association between methotrexate hepatotoxicity and cumulative dose.

    A systematic review of Medline (PubMed) EMBASE, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library was performed. Full texts of articles were examined, and excluded articles were recorded with reasons for exclusion. A meta-analysis of correlation coefficients was performed using Fisher'sz-transformation and a random effects model. Cochran's Q-test and the I
    statistic were calculated to assess heterogeneity.

    A total of 35 studies met inclusion criteria. Measures of hepatotoxicity were highly varied and included liver biopsy, elastography, FibroTest, biochemical tests and scoring systems (Fib-4, APRI, ASTALT). Some studies analysed for the association with MTX cumulative dose using more than one modality. Overall,iver injury is a direct result of drug accumulation.

Premature fatal and non-fatal CVD is considered to be largely preventable through the control of risk factors by lifestyle modifications and preventive medication. Lipid-lowering and antihypertensive drug therapies for primary prevention are cost-effective in reducing CVD morbidity and mortality among high-risk people and are recommended by international guidelines. However, adherence to medication prescribed for the prevention of CVD can be poor. Approximately 9% of CVD cases in the EU are attributed to poor adherence to vascular medications. Low-cost, scalable interventions to improve adherence to medications for the primary prevention of CVD have potential to reduce morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs associated with CVD.

    Hospitalized patients, aged 65 years and older, enrolled in HELP during between January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018 were included in the HELP cohort. Patients hospitalized in eight additional units during the same time frame were part of the standard care group.

    Antipsychotic/benzodiazepine medications were pulled from the electronic health record. History of chronic mental illnesses were classified by ICD10 codes. Basic descriptive statistics were used to analyze patient characteristics and comorbidities. Chi-squared and t-tests were performed to detect statistical differences as appropriate.

    There were 1411 patients in the HELP group and 10,807re independent environment (home or assisted living) and there was a relatively low 30-day readmission rate among HELP patients.Stiff skin syndrome (SSS) is a rare, scleroderma-like condition that is commonly characterised by stony hard skin and limited joint mobility, in the absence of visceral involvement or immunologic abnormalities. Depending on the distribution of the disease, this disorder can be further categorised into classic (widespread) SSS or its newly described segmental variant. Additional features of this syndrome may include hypertrichosis, lipodystrophy, dysmetria and scoliosis. In this report, we present the case of a patient with segmental SSS and we briefly review the current literature about the topic.COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) causes multiple inflammatory complications, resulting not only in severe lung inflammation but also harm to other organs. Although the current focus is on the management of acute COVID-19, there is growing concern about long-term effects of COVID-19 (Long Covid), such as fibroproliferative changes in the lung, heart and kidney. Therefore, the identification of therapeutic targets not only for the management of acute COVID-19 but also for preventing Long Covid are needed, and would mitigate against long-lasting health burden and economic costs, in addition to saving lives.   • Gonadotropins play vital roles in the regulation of female reproductive ability and fertility. Our study aimed to determine the effects of superovulation induced by increasing doses of equine chorionic gonadotropin [eCG; also referred to as pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG)] on the developmental competence of mouse embryos and on aneuploidy formation during in vitro fertilization (IVF). eCG dose-dependently enhanced the oocyte yield from each mouse. Administration of 15 IU eCG significantly reduced the fertilization rate and the formation of four-cell embryos and blastocysts and increased the risk of chromosome aneuploidy. The IVF-derived blastocysts in the 15 IU eCG treatment group had the fewest total cells, inner cell mass (ICM) cells and trophectoderm (TE) cells. Moreover, more blastocysts and fewer apoptotic cells were observed in the 0, 5, and 10 IU eCG treatment groups than in the 15 IU eCG treatment group. We also investigated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and variations in several variabses of eCG caused Aurora B-mediated SAC activation triggered by ROS-induced DNA damage in early mouse IVF-derived embryos for self-correction of aneuploidy formation. The gene signature was used to evaluate the infiltration of CAFs in each sample, and the clinical significance of each key gene in the gene signature and CAFs was analyzed. We observed that the CAF infiltration was higher in kidney cancer and advanced tumor stage and grade than in normal tissues. The seven key genes of the CAF gene signature identified using WGCNA showed high expression of CAF-related characteristics in the cell clustering landscape and fibroblast cell lines; these genes were found to be associated with extracellular matrix function, collagen synthesis, cell surface interaction, and adhesion. The high CAF infiltration and the key genes were verified from the TCGA and Gene Expression Omnibus data related to the advanced grade, advanced stage, and poor prognosis of RCC. In summary, our findings indicate that the clinically significant gene signature may serve as a potential biomarker of CAFs in RCC, and the infiltration of CAFs is associated with the pathological grade, stage, and prognosis of RCC.
    Gonadotropins play vital roles in the regulation of female reproductive ability and fertility. Our study aimed to determine the effects of superovulation induced by increasing doses of equine chorionic gonadotropin [eCG; also referred to as pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG)] on the developmental competence of mouse embryos and on aneuploidy formation during in vitro fertilization (IVF). eCG dose-dependently enhanced the oocyte yield from each mouse. Administration of 15 IU eCG significantly reduced the fertilization rate and the formation of four-cell embryos and blastocysts and increased the risk of chromosome aneuploidy. The IVF-derived blastocysts in the 15 IU eCG treatment group had the fewest total cells, inner cell mass (ICM) cells and trophectoderm (TE) cells. Moreover, more blastocysts and fewer apoptotic cells were observed in the 0, 5, and 10 IU eCG treatment groups than in the 15 IU eCG treatment group. We also investigated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and variations in several variabses of eCG caused Aurora B-mediated SAC activation triggered by ROS-induced DNA damage in early mouse IVF-derived embryos for self-correction of aneuploidy formation. Fitting the measured conductivity data using the Drude-Smith model reveals that the carrier transport in the SiC@C NCs and its counterpart, the SiC nanoparticles (NPs), is dominated by backscattering. The SiC@C NCs with an enhanced conductivity are believed to be fundamental materials for various functionalized optoelectronics devices.

    The operative records of patients with ASD with complete radiographic data beginning at baseline up to 3 years were included. Patients with no baseline CD were postoperatively stratified by Ames CD criteria (T1 slope-cervical lordosis mismatch [TS-CL] > 20°, cervical sagittal vertical axis [cSVA] > 40 mm), where CD was defined as fulfilling one or more of the Ames criteria. Severe CD was defined as TS-CL > 30° or cSVA > 60 mm. Follow-up intervals were established after ASD surgery, with 6 weeks postoperatively defined as early; 6 weeks-1 year as intermediate; 1-2 years as late; and 2-3 years as long-term. Descriptive analyses and McNemar tests identified the CD conversion rate, PJK rate (< -10° change in uppermost instrumented ho converted in the late or long-term follow-up intervals had higher rates of concurrent PJK and greater radiographic progression.
    Patients with ASD with normative cervical alignment who converted to CD after thoracolumbar surgery had varying radiographic findings based on timing of conversion. Although the highest number of patients converted within 6 weeks postoperatively, patients who converted in the late or long-term follow-up intervals had higher rates of concurrent PJK and greater radiographic progression.
    The Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Clinician & Group Survey (CG-CAHPS) was developed as a result of the value-based purchasing initiative by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services. It allows patients to rate their experience with their provider in the outpatient setting. These ratings are then reported in aggregate and made publicly available, allowing patients to make informed choices during physician selection. In this study, the authors sought to elucidate the primary drivers of patient satisfaction in the office-based spine surgery setting as represented by the CG-CAHPS.

  • Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a biomarker for aging and chronic disease burden that may capture the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects attributed to healthy diets.

    The aim was to examine whether several healthy dietary patterns and a lower inflammatory potential of diet are associated with lower concentrations of GDF-15 in older adults.

    We used cross-sectional data from 2501 older adults participating in the Seniors-ENRICA-2 study. Four diet indices were derived from habitual food consumption estimated with a validated diet history Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). Associations of these indices with GDF-15 concentrations were analyzed using linear regression models and adjusted for risk factors and biomarkers associated with chronic disease.

    There was a clear dose-response association between all dietary patterns and serum GDF-15 concty may reduce inflammation and possibly promote healthy aging.
    There is an emerging viewpoint that change in body weight is not sufficiently sensitive to promptly identify clinically meaningful change in body composition, such as skeletal muscle depletion.

    We aimed to determine whether body weight stability is associated with skeletal muscle depletion and whether skeletal muscle depletion is prognostic of death independently of change in body weight.

    This retrospective cohort included 1921 patients with stage I-III colorectal cancer. Computed tomography (CT)-based skeletal muscle characteristics and body weight were measured at diagnosis and after a mean 15.0-mo follow-up. Body weight stability was defined as weight change less than ±5% during follow-up. Sarcopenia and myosteatosis were defined using established thresholds for patients with cancer. Multivariable-adjusted logistic and flexible parametric proportional hazards survival models were used to quantify statistical associations.

    At follow-up, 1026 (53.3%) patients were weight stable. Among patients with ws clinically meaningful skeletal muscle depletion. Body composition quantified using clinically acquired CT images may provide a vital sign to identify patients at increased risk of death. These data may inform the design of future cachexia trials.
    Although there is growing evidence on the role of preconception nutrition for birth outcomes, very few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of nutrition interventions during the preconception period on offspring cognitive outcomes.

    We evaluate the impact of preconception weekly multiple micronutrients (MMs) or iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation compared with folic acid (FA) alone on offspring intellectual functioning at age 6-7 y.

    We followed 1599 offspring born to women who participated in a double-blinded randomized controlled trial of preconception supplementation in Vietnam. Women received weekly supplements containing either 2800 μg FA only, 60 mg iron and 2800 μg FA, or MMs (15 micronutrients including IFA) from baseline until conception, followed by daily prenatal IFA supplements until delivery. We used the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to measure full-scale IQ (FSIQ) and 4 related domains of intellectual functioning [Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), Perceptual Reasoninion with MMs improved certain domains of intellectual functioning at age 6-7 y compared with FA. These findings suggest the potential for preconception micronutrient interventions to have long-term benefits for offspring cognition.
    Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) may influence growth during and recovery from moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), however, biomarkers to assess these relations have yet to be identified.

    The objectives of this study were to 1) develop a score for EED based on host fecal mRNA transcripts, 2) compare biomarkers of EED with each other, and 3) examine associations between the EED biomarkers and recovery from MAM and growth outcomes.

    In a cohort of 520 Sierra Leonean MAM children, biomarkers of EED included the lactulose mannitol (L M) test, 15 host fecal mRNA transcripts, and host fecal proteins [α-1-antitrypsin (AAT), myeloperoxidase (MPO), neopterin (NEO)]. Anthropometry data were also collected and z scores were computed for length-for-age (LAZ) and weight-for-length (WLZ). Recovery from MAM was defined as midupper arm circumference≥12.5 cm. Factor analysis was used to identify EED scores using the mRNA transcripts, and mixed effects regression was conducted to test for associations.

    The 15 hostestinal inflammation, permeability, and defense were associated with growth outcomes and recovery from MAM.
    The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is an indicator of systemic immune-nutritional condition and is a well-known prognostic biomarker in lung cancer patients. Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is a specific histological feature of cancers, influencing an individual's immunological tumour responses. However, whether PNI can reflect lung cancer patients' prognosis through local immunity such as TIL is unclear.

    We selected 64 lung squamous cell carcinoma patients who underwent curative operations. We investigated the significance of preoperative PNI level and evaluated the relationship between PNI and immune cells surrounding the lung cancer tissue using immunohistochemical analysis of a cluster of differentiation (CD)3, CD4, CD8 and CD68.

    A low-PNI level was significantly associated with a worse postoperative prognosis (P = 0.042).     Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a biomarker for aging and chronic disease burden that may capture the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects attributed to healthy diets. The aim was to examine whether several healthy dietary patterns and a lower inflammatory potential of diet are associated with lower concentrations of GDF-15 in older adults. We used cross-sectional data from 2501 older adults participating in the Seniors-ENRICA-2 study. Four diet indices were derived from habitual food consumption estimated with a validated diet history Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). Associations of these indices with GDF-15 concentrations were analyzed using linear regression models and adjusted for risk factors and biomarkers associated with chronic disease. Conversely, complementary aspects of the two methods confirm that their integration in monitoring programs will provide a more complete and extensive assessment of reef fish status for managers than from either method alone.The presence of toxic compounds in aquatic bodies is of great concern, and the Fenton, photo-Fenton and radiation/H2O2 processes can be applied in the remediation of these compounds due to their efficiency and advantages. However, these processes need to be investigated to make them more viable and environmentally friendly. Thus, the reduction of toxicity was evaluated, through ecotoxicological tests with Artemia salina and Lactuca sativa, of the compounds 2,4-D, diazepam, nicotine and paracetamol (acetaminophen) by the Fenton, photo-Fenton and radiation/H2O2 process with UVC, UVA and natural solar radiation at neutral pH with low concentrations of Fe2+ and H2O2. The UVC/H2O2 process was efficient in the degradation of nicotine (74%), the photo-Fenton process was more efficient in the degradation of 2,4-D (82%), diazepam (27%) and paracetamol (85%) using solar radiation, UVA and UVC respectively. The toxicity and total organic carbon (TOC) tests showed a reduction in the toxicity of the compounds after treatment, except for diazepam, which was more resistant to the process, leading to a higher mortality of Artemia salinas (92%) and less relative seed germination of Lactuca sativa (40%).Investments in forestry are long-term and thus subject to numerous sources of risk. In addition to the volatility from markets, forestry investments are directly exposed to future impacts from climate change. We examined how diversification of forest management regimes can mitigate the expected risks associated with forestry activities in New Zealand based on an application of Modern Portfolio Theory. Uncertainties in the responses of Pinus radiata (D. Don) productivity to climate change, from 2050 to 2090, were simulated with 3-PG, a process-based forest growth model, based on future climate scenarios and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). Future timber market scenarios were based on RCP-specific projections from the Global Timber Model and historical log grade prices. Outputs from 3-PG and the market scenarios were combined to compute annualized forestry returns for four P. radiata regimes for 2050-2090. This information was then used to construct optimal forestry portfolios that minimize investment risk for a given target return under different RCPs, forest productivity and market scenarios. While current P. radiata regimes in New Zealand are largely homogenous, our results suggest that regime diversification can mitigate future risks imposed by climate change and market uncertainty. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/dir-cy7-dic18.html Nevertheless, optimal portfolio compositions varied substantially across our range of scenarios and portfolio objectives. This study proposed a novel modelling methodology by integrating an expert-based matrix, a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN), a structural equation model, and a scenario development method. It aims at evaluating dune ecosystem services for the sustainable development of coastal areas. The model was tested using data collected from dunes in Vietnam. An expert-based matrix to assess the supply capacity of 18 ES in different types of dunes was generated with the participation of 21 interdisciplinary scientists. It was found that red dune ecosystems could supply the most regulation and cultural ecosystem services, while gray dunes provided the least amount. Results from a scenario analysis recommended that decision-making is able to optimize multiple ES by (i) keeping embryo/fore dunes in their natural state instead of using them for mineral mining and urbanization; (ii) enlarging certified and protected forests areas in gray and yellow dunes; and (iii) optimizing cultural ES supply in red dunes.In situ monitoring techniques can provide new insight into bacterial transport after inoculating exogenous bacteria into contaminated soils for bioremediation. A real-time and non-destructive optical sensor (the optrode) was employed to monitor in situ transport of two fluorescently labelled bacteria - Green Fluorescent Protein (Gfp)-labelled, hydrophilic Pseudomonas putida and Tomato Fluorescent Protein (td)-labelled, hydrophobic Rhodococcus erythropolis, in a saturated sand column with and without rhamnolipid surfactant. In situ measurements were made at three sampling ports in the column with the optrode in two sets of column experiments. In Experiment 1, liquid samples were extracted for ex situ analyses (plate counts and fluorescence), while in Experiment 2 no liquid samples were extracted. Extracting liquid samples for ex situ analyses in Experiment 1 disturbed in situ measurements; in situ measured bacterial concentrations were lower, or a significant lag in breakthrough occurred relative to ex situ measurements. In Experiment 2, the optrode worked well in monitoring bacterial transport, which gave consistent transport parameters at each sampling port. Moreover, the optrode enabled the impact of bacterial hydrophobicity and rhamnolipid surfactant on bacterial transport to be observed. Specifically, hydrophilic P. putida was transported faster through the column than hydrophobic R. erythropolis; we infer from this result that fewer P. putida cells adsorb to sand particles than do R. erythropolis cells. The rhamnolipid surfactant enhanced the transport of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic bacteria. These two observations are consistent with Lifshitz-van der Waals forces and acid-base interactions between bacteria and sand.

Our results show that both the oxidation of active-site iron to FeIII , and the addition of denaturation reagents, result in significant decrease in enzyme activity and active-site water motion confinement. As tyrosine residues play important roles, including as general acids and bases, and electron transfer agents in many key enzymes, the genetically encoded 2D-IR probe N3Y should be broadly applicable to investigate how the enzyme active-site motions at the fs-ps time scale direct reaction pathways to facilitating specific chemical reactions.
    The use of benzodiazepines (BZDs) causes delirium, especially in elderly people. For this reason, suvorexant has been recommended as the first-line hypnotic in elderly patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether the first-line use of suvorexant, instead of BZDs, decreases referrals for delirium in elderly patients.

    Since May 2016 at Nagoya Ekisaikai Hospital, suvorexant has been recommended as the first-line hypnotic instead of BZDs. In May 2017, suvorexant was adopted as the first-line hypnotic. The number of delirium cases referred to psychiatry was compared among three consecutive periods period A (May 2015-April 2016), during which BZDs were mainly used for insomnia; period B (May 2016-April 2017), during which the use of suvorexant was recommended instead of BZDs; and period C (May 2017-April 2018), during which suvorexant was principally adopted as the first-line hypnotic for insomnia. Potential confounding factors that may affect the development of delirium were also examined during the three periods.

    The number of delirium referral cases in elderly patients in each period decreased, from 133 in period A to 86 in period B and 53 in period C. The rate of delirium referral cases decreased significantly every year (P = 9.02 × 10

Simultaneously, ocean warming is changing ecosystems that support marine mammal populations. The interactive effects of sea ice and prey are not well understood yet may explain spatial-temporal variation in the response of polar bears to sea ice loss. Here, we examined the potential combined effects of sea ice, seal body condition, and atmospheric circulation patterns on the body condition, recruitment, diet, and feeding probability of 469 polar bears captured in the Chukchi Sea, 2008-2017. The body condition of ringed seals (Pusa hispida), the primary prey of females and subadults, was related to dietary proportions of ringed seal, feeding probability, and the body condition of females and cubs. In contrast, adult males consumed more bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) and exhibited better condition when bearded seal body condition was higher. The litter size, number of yearlings per adult female, and the condition of dependent young were higher following winters characterized by low Arctic Oscillation conditions, consistent with a growing number of studies. Body condition, recruitment, and feeding probability were either not associated or negatively associated with sea ice conditions, suggesting that, unlike some subpopulations, Chukchi Sea bears are not currently limited by sea ice availability. However, spring sea ice cover declined 2% per year during our study reaching levels not previously observed in the satellite record and resulting in the loss of polar bear hunting and seal pupping habitat. Our study suggests that the status of ice seal populations is likely an important factor that can either compound or mitigate the response of polar bears to sea ice loss over the short term. The use of benzodiazepines (BZDs) causes delirium, especially in elderly people. For this reason, suvorexant has been recommended as the first-line hypnotic in elderly patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether the first-line use of suvorexant, instead of BZDs, decreases referrals for delirium in elderly patients. Since May 2016 at Nagoya Ekisaikai Hospital, suvorexant has been recommended as the first-line hypnotic instead of BZDs. In May 2017, suvorexant was adopted as the first-line hypnotic. The number of delirium cases referred to psychiatry was compared among three consecutive periods period A (May 2015-April 2016), during which BZDs were mainly used for insomnia; period B (May 2016-April 2017), during which the use of suvorexant was recommended instead of BZDs; and period C (May 2017-April 2018), during which suvorexant was principally adopted as the first-line hypnotic for insomnia. Potential confounding factors that may affect the development of delirium were also examined during the three periods. The number of delirium referral cases in elderly patients in each period decreased, from 133 in period A to 86 in period B and 53 in period C. The rate of delirium referral cases decreased significantly every year (P = 9.02 × 10 ). Almost no significant confounding factors other than hypnotics were detected during the three periods. The referrals for delirium in elderly patients decreased significantly after the hypnotic was changed from BZDs to suvorexant. Simultaneously, ocean warming is changing ecosystems that support marine mammal populations. The interactive effects of sea ice and prey are not well understood yet may explain spatial-temporal variation in the response of polar bears to sea ice loss. Here, we examined the potential combined effects of sea ice, seal body condition, and atmospheric circulation patterns on the body condition, recruitment, diet, and feeding probability of 469 polar bears captured in the Chukchi Sea, 2008-2017. The body condition of ringed seals (Pusa hispida), the primary prey of females and subadults, was related to dietary proportions of ringed seal, feeding probability, and the body condition of females and cubs. In contrast, adult males consumed more bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) and exhibited better condition when bearded seal body condition was higher. The litter size, number of yearlings per adult female, and the condition of dependent young were higher following winters characterized by low Arctic Oscillation conditions, consistent with a growing number of studies. Body condition, recruitment, and feeding probability were either not associated or negatively associated with sea ice conditions, suggesting that, unlike some subpopulations, Chukchi Sea bears are not currently limited by sea ice availability. However, spring sea ice cover declined 2% per year during our study reaching levels not previously observed in the satellite record and resulting in the loss of polar bear hunting and seal pupping habitat. Our study suggests that the status of ice seal populations is likely an important factor that can either compound or mitigate the response of polar bears to sea ice loss over the short term. In the long term, neither polar bears nor their prey are likely robust to limitless loss of their sea ice habitat.The stereospecific ionic ring-opening polymerization of various donor-acceptor cyclopropanes is reported. The chiral cyclopropane monomers are readily prepared with established methodology and stereospecific polymerization is best conducted with a catalytic amount of MgBr2 serving as a Lewis acid and as an initiator. Polymers with molecular masses of up to 7800 g mol-1 containing a stereocenter in every repeating unit are obtained and the substituents of the monomers can be readily varied to access a novel class of chiral polymers.The manginoids are a unique collection of bioactive natural products whose structures fuse an oxa-bridged spirocyclohexanedione with a heavily substituted trans-hydrindane framework. Herein, we show that such architectures can be accessed through a strategy combining a challenging pinacol coupling and bicycle-forming etherification with several additional chemo- and regioselective reactions. The success of these key events proved to be highly substrate and condition specific, affording insights for their application to other targets. As a result, not only has a 19-step total synthesis of manginoid A been achieved, but a potential roadmap to access other members of the family and related natural products has also been identified.

  • The effective control of film morphology and molecular packing in the out-of-plane direction of semiconductor polymers plays a critical role in governing charge carrier transport in the direction perpendicular to the substrate. In this study, a highly out-of-plane alignment of the n-type polymer P(NDI2OD-T2) film has been successfully achieved by horizontal rotation in a high magnetic field (HR-HMF). The out-of-plane alignment of the P(NDI2OD-T2) film has showed a change from 72% face-on to 98.2% face-on lamellar texture as well as a 1.6-fold increase of the π-π stacking crystalline correlation length compared with that of as-cast polymer films without HR-HMF-induced alignment. Meanwhile, the film with near-perfect face-on molecular packing exhibited more than 18-fold enhancement of electron mobility compared to the unaligned film. The excellent electrical performance achieved with the HR-HMF process indicates its application potential for fabricating high-performance sandwich-type organic electronic devices, such as solar cells and light-emitting diodes.The vibrational dynamics of pure and methylammonium-doped formamidinium lead iodide perovskites (FAPbI3) has been investigated by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy. For the first time, we provide an exhaustive and accurate analysis of the cation vibrations and underlying local structure around the organic moiety in these materials using first-principles electronic-structure calculations validated by the neutron data. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on FAPbI3 provide direct evidence of the formation of a low-temperature orientational glass, unveiling the physicochemical origin of phase metastability in the tetragonal structure. Further analysis of these data provides a suitable starting point to explore and understand the stabilization of the perovskite framework via doping with small amounts of organic cations. In particular, we find that the hydrogen-bonding interactions around the formamidinium cations are strengthened as a result of cage deformation. This synergistic effect across perovskite cages is accompanied by a concomitant weakening of the methylammonium interactions with the surrounding framework.The generation of aminium radical cation species from N-nitrosoamines is disclosed for the first time through visible-light excitation at 453 nm. Here, we engineer an artificial topological superconductor by progressively introducing superconductivity (Nb), strong spin-orbital coupling (Pt), and topological states (Bi2Te3). Through spectroscopic imaging of superconducting vortices within the bare s-wave superconducting Nb and within proximitized Pt and Bi2Te3 layers, we detect the emergence of a zero-bias peak that is directly linked to the presence of topological surface states. Our results are rationalized in terms of competing energy trends which are found to impose an upper limit to the size of the minigap separating Majorana and trivial modes, its size being ultimately linked to fundamental materials properties.Allyl 2-diazo-2-phenylacetates are shown to react with trimethylsilyl thioethers in the presence of rhodium(II) catalysts to generate α-allyl-α-thio silyl esters.     To determine whether the simplified Light's criteria (ie, pleural effusion lactate dehydrogenase concentration and serum total protein) can identify the pathophysiology of pleural effusion formation in dogs, and to assess whether these criteria were more accurate than the traditional veterinary classification based on pleural effusion total protein (TPp) and nucleated cell count (TNCCp).

    This is a cross-sectional study including 100 dogs with pleural effusion. The aetiology of effusion was used to classify the pathophysiology of its formation. Parameters measured included the simplified Light's criteria, TPp and TNCCp. The diagnostic utility of the two methods in classifying pleural effusion formation was evaluated.

    Seven transudates due to decreased colloid osmotic pressure, 18 transudates due to increased hydrostatic pressure gradient and 75 exudates were included in the study. The simplified Light's criteria misclassified 2 of 75 exudates (98 per cent overall accuracy). The traditional veterinary classification scheme misclassified 31 of 75 exudates and 12 of 18 increased hydrostatic pressure gradient transudates (57 per cent overall accuracy). The frequency of agreement between the simplified Light's criteria and the traditional veterinary classification with the true nature of the pleural effusion was significantly different (P<0.001).

    Perinatal mortality in beef calves impacts on profitability and animal welfare, but the incidence and causes in UK herds are not well known.

    Data from 11 herds were analysed to establish the risk factors for and incidence of perinatal mortality (full-term calves born dead or died within 48 hours). To establish cause of death, 23 herds in total submitted dead calves for postmortem examination (nine herds submitted all calves, 14 herds submitted calves on an ad hoc basis) and the results were reviewed by a panel.

    The incidence of perinatal mortality for all 1059 calvings was 5.1 per cent (range 1.6-12.4 per cent across herds; median 4 per cent). The incidence of stillbirth and neonatal mortality was 3.9 per cent (range 0-10.1 per cent) and 1.2 per cent (range 0-2.6 per cent), respectively. Sex of the calf, plurality and level of calving assistance were associated with significantly greater risk of perinatal loss. Parturition-related deaths (n=20), intrauterine infections (n=13), congenital malformations (n=6) and postpartum infections (n=6) were among the diagnosis recorded from 54 calves investigated. Parturition-related deaths and congenital malformations were recorded more commonly from herds submitting all losses than from those submitting on an ad hoc basis.

Cleavage of viral spike protein via the host cell's TMPRSS2 enzyme activity mediates viral entry into the host cell. The enzyme synthesis is regulated by the TMPRSS2 gene, which has also been implicated in the entry mechanisms of previously reported Coronavirus infections. In this review, we have investigated the pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 and disease susceptibility dependence on the TMPRSS2 gene as expressed in various population groups. We further discuss how the differential expression of this gene in various ethnic groups can affect the SARS-CoV-2 infection and Coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 outcomes. Moreover, promising new TMPRSS2 protease blockers and inhibitors are discussed for COVID-19 treatment.

An increasing number of publications highlight the role of Transmembrane Serine Protease 2 (TMPRSS2) in the susceptibility of the host cell to SARS-CoV-2. Cleavage of viral spike protein via the host cell's TMPRSS2 enzyme activity mediates viral entry into the host cell. The enzyme synthesis is regulated by the TMPRSS2 gene, which has also been implicated in the entry mechanisms of previously reported Coronavirus infections. In this review, we have investigated the pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 and disease susceptibility dependence on the TMPRSS2 gene as expressed in various population groups. We further discuss how the differential expression of this gene in various ethnic groups can affect the SARS-CoV-2 infection and Coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 outcomes. Moreover, promising new TMPRSS2 protease blockers and inhibitors are discussed for COVID-19 treatment.

    We frequently encounter early gastric cancer (EGC) that could not be detected in the previous esophagogastroduodenoscopy even if the procedure was annually performed. However, little evidence exists regarding the characteristics of false-negative EGCs. Our aim was to reveal the clinical features of false-negative EGCs.

    We retrospectively reviewed cases of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for EGCs in Fukuchiyama City Hospital between January 2013 and May 2019. False-negative EGCs were defined as EGCs within 3 years of negative endoscopy. We evaluated the clinical characteristics of false-negative and initially detected EGCs and the difference in the detected and last missed endoscopy in false-negative EGCs. The miss rates of false-negative EGCs were compared between trainees (nonboard-certified endoscopists) and experienced endoscopists (board-certified endoscopists); thereafter, the characteristics of false-negative EGCs missed by trainees were investigated.

    Of 219 cases, 119 were classified as fa of false-negative EGCs were similar to those of H. pylori-eradicated EGC. Procedures with shortened examination time and those performed by trainees were risk factors of missing false-negative EGCs. Trainees should pay attention to reddish or well-differentiated EGCs located in the lower or lesser curvature of the stomach.Electroacupuncture (EA) improves hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis disorder by reducing corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) synthesis and release in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN).     Bodily self-perception is an important concept for several neurological disorders, including spinal cord injury (SCI). Changing one's bodily self-perception, e.g., via rubber hand illusion (RHI), induces alterations of bottom-up and top-down pathways and with this the connectivity between involved brain areas. We aim to examine whether (1) this process can be manipulated by changing cortical excitability, (2) connectivity between relevant brain areas differ when the RHI cannot be evoked, and (3) how this projection differs in a patient with SCI.

    We applied RHI and facilitatory theta burst stimulation (TBS) on the right primary somatosensory cortex (S1) of 18 healthy participants and one patient with incomplete, cervical SCI. During RHI, we recorded high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG) and extracted directed and nondirected connectivity measures.

    There is no difference in connectivity between sham and real TBS or in the effectivity of RHI. We observed a higher laterality in the patient, i.e., higerceptory illusion could not be observed in the EEG analysis.Nucleosomes composed of histone octamer and DNA are the basic structural unit in the eukaryote chromosome. Therefore, the combination of different states of histone modifications modulates gene expression is called histone code. The formation of learning and memory is one of the most important mechanisms for animals to adapt to environmental changes. A large number of studies have shown that histone codes are involved in the formation and consolidation of learning and memory. Here, we review the most recent literature of histone modification in regulating neurogenesis, dendritic spine dynamic, synapse formation, and synaptic plasticity.

  • Transmission is the fundamental process whereby pathogens infect their hosts and spread through populations, and can be characterized using mathematical functions. The functional form of transmission for emerging pathogens can determine pathogen impacts on host populations and can inform the efficacy of disease management strategies. By directly measuring transmission between infected and susceptible adult eastern newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) in aquatic mesocosms, we identified the most plausible transmission function for the emerging amphibian fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). Although we considered a range of possible transmission functions, we found that Bsal transmission was best explained by pure frequency dependence. We observed that >90% of susceptible newts became infected within 17 days post-exposure to an infected newt across a range of host densities and initial infection prevalence treatments. Under these conditions, we estimated R0 = 4.9 for Bsal in an eastern newt population. Our results suggest that Bsal has the capability of driving eastern newt populations to extinction and that managing host density may not be an effective management strategy. Intervention strategies that prevent Bsal introduction or increase host resistance or tolerance to infection may be more effective. Our results add to the growing empirical evidence that transmission of wildlife pathogens can saturate and be functionally frequency-dependent.Recent studies have demonstrated that rapid contemporary evolution can play a significant role in regulating population dynamics on ecological timescales. Here we identify a previously unrecognised mode by which rapid evolution can promote species coexistence via temporal fluctuations and a trade-off between competitive ability and the speed of adaptive evolution. We show that this interaction between rapid evolution and temporal fluctuations not only increases the range of coexistence conditions under a gleaner-opportunist trade-off (i.e. low minimum resource requirement [R* ] vs. high maximum growth rate) but also yields stable coexistence in the absence of a classical gleaner-opportunist trade-off. Given the propensity for both oscillatory dynamics and different rates of adaptation between species (including rapid evolution and phenotypic plasticity) in the real world, we argue that this expansion of fluctuation-dependent coexistence theory provides an important overlooked solution to the so-called 'paradox of the plankton'.Over the past 15 years, the number of papers focused on 'eco-evo dynamics' has increased exponentially (Figure 1). This pattern suggests the rapid growth of a new, integrative discipline. Herein, we report a "one-pot" method to prepare a kind of palladium complexed with azo porous organic polymer nanospheres (Pd-azo-POPs). The method combines the synthesis of azo-POPs with the reduction of the Pd ion, where azo serves as an anchoring group to limit the growth of Pd. The unique structure is conductive to the formation of a uniform active center and provides improved electron transfer. Pd-azo-POPs-80 exhibits a high catalytic activity and cycling stability both in 4-nitrophenol reduction and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. The knor for the 4-nitrophenol reduction was 174.7 min-1  mM-1 and the conversion remains above 90% after 6 cycles. Meanwhile, the yield was still up to 94.5% after 5 cycles for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of benzene derivatives with I/Br under mild conditions.The aim of the present study was to check whether the M-wave and H-reflex recruitment curves differ between prepubertal boys and men. Eleven boys (9-11 yr) and eleven men (18-35 yr) were magnetically stimulated at the tibial nerve in a prone position. M-wave and H-reflex maximal amplitudes (Hmax; Mmax ; Hmax /Mmax ), thresholds, regression slopes (Hslp ; Mslp ; Hslp /Mslp ) were extracted from M-wave and H-reflex recruitment curves and compared between the two age groups. Overall, no significant difference in M-wave and H-reflex recruitment curve parameters was found between the two populations. Nevertheless, the size of the M-wave associated with maximal H-reflex amplitude was lower in boys as compared to men when expressed relative to maximal M-wave amplitude (MHmax /Mmax 0.18 ± 0.06 vs. 0.31 ± 0.13; p less then .05). This result suggests that the development of peripheral nerve was completed in 9 to 11-year-old boys and did not affect the M-wave and H-reflex recruitment curves parameters. In neuromuscular function studies, it implies that Hmax /Mmax and Hslp /Mslp could be used indifferently to compare spinal motoneuron excitability between 9-11-year-old boys and men. Conversely, evoking H-reflexes at a given percentage of Mmax may bias the comparison between boys and men.Efforts to manufacture artificial cells that replicate the architectures, processes and behaviours of biological cells are rapidly increasing. Perhaps the most commonly reconstructed cellular structure is the membrane, through the use of unilamellar vesicles as models. However, many cellular membranes, including bacterial double membranes, nuclear envelopes, and organelle membranes, are multilamellar. Due to a lack of technologies available for their controlled construction, multilayered membranes are not part of the repertoire of cell-mimetic motifs used in bottom-up synthetic biology. To address this, we developed emulsion-based technologies that allow cell-sized multilayered vesicles to be produced layer-by-layer, with compositional control over each layer, thus enabling studies that would otherwise remain inaccessible. We discovered that bending rigidities scale with the number of layers and demonstrate inter-bilayer registration between coexisting liquid-liquid domains. These technologies will contribute to the exploitation of multilayered membrane structures, paving the way for incorporating protein complexes that span multiple bilayers.
