Thinking small can greatly help us improve our lives, but also obliges us to deeply and comprehensively investigate all the possible consequences that could arise from our pure-hearted scientific ambitions and work.The acid-catalyzed cyclization of benzylidenes based on 16-dehydropregnenolone acetate (16-DPA) was studied. It was found that these compounds readily undergo regioselective interrupted Nazarov cyclization with trapping chloride ion and an efficient method of the synthesis of d-annulated pentacyclic steroids based on this reaction was proposed. The structures of the synthesized pentacyclic steroids were determined by NMR and X-ray diffraction. It was found that the reaction affords a single diastereomer, but the latter can crystallize as two conformers depending on the structure. Antiproliferative activity of synthesized compounds was evaluated against two breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. All tested compounds showed relatively high antiproliferative activity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, we apply the method to the safe inspection of printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) wirelessly networked to a remote automatic optical inspection (AOI) system. A defect detected and localized by the AOI system is wirelessly remitted to the proposed remote inspection system for prompt guidance to the inspector by augmenting a rectangular bracket and a reference image. The rectangular bracket transmitted through the switchable glass aids defect localization over the PCBA, whereas the image is projected over the opaque cells of the switchable glass to provide reference to a user. The developed system is evaluated in a user study for its robustness, precision and performance. Results indicate that the resulting contextualization from variability in occlusion levels not only positively affect inspection performance but also supersedes the state of the art in user preference. Furthermore, it supports a variety of complex visualization needs including varied sizes, contrast, online or offline tracking, with a simple robust integration requiring no additional calibration for registration.Malaria has been for millennia one of the best known and most destructive diseases affecting humans. Cognitive dysfunction is a major consequence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and has further detrimental effects on both functionality and the quality of life for patients. While peritoneal dialysis is generally advocated in ESRD, there is a substantial knowledge gap about the differential effects of chronic dialysis modalities on cognitive dysfunction and decline. The aim of this meta-analysis is to evaluate cognitive function in peritoneal dialysis versus hemodialysis patients.
We performed a systematic review in different databases to identify studies that assessed the effect of different dialysis modalities on cognitive functions. Inclusion criteria for our meta-analysis were all studies that compared the effects of peritoneal dialysis on cognitive functions compared to intermittent hemodialysis. The data collected were the name of the first author, journal title, year of publication, country where the study was conducted, number of patients in the peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis arms and methostrated a lower odd of cognitive dysfunction compared to those on hemodialysis. Future prospective studies should assess cognitive decline as a meaningful outcome in dialysis patients.
The purpose of this study was to assess factors affecting fixator stiffness with a finite element model and an experimental validation with particular attention to a new fixator device named Mutifix Wrist
(NCS Lab srl, Carpi, MO, Italy).
Mechanical tests were carried out to determine the stiffness of the construct with different configurations. The obtained results were compared to those obtained with the Hoffmann II Compact (Howmedica-Osteonics Inc. Axial compression tests showed that the axial displacement reached by the machine actuator when the measured force reached 45N was 0.56mm ± 0.13 on average. Magnitude of the displacement along with peak stress magnitude and localization varied through the several configuration tested, but it resulted that the distal pin near the fracture gap was the more stressed one in all cases except those in which the fracture line is crossed.

Coincident with the rapid developments of COVID-19 vaccines globally, concerns about the safety of such a vaccine could contribute to vaccine hesitancy. We analyzed 1941 anonymous questionnaires completed by healthcare workers and members of the general Israeli population, regarding acceptance of a potential COVID-19 vaccine. Our results indicate that healthcare staff involved in the care of COVID-19 positive patients, and individuals considering themselves at risk of disease, were more likely to self-report acquiescence to COVID-19 vaccination if and when available. In contrast, parents, nurses, and medical workers not caring for SARS-CoV-2 positive patients expressed higher levels of vaccine hesitancy. Interventional educational campaigns targeted towards populations at risk of vaccine hesitancy are therefore urgently needed to combat misinformation and avoid low inoculation rates.Bariatric surgery may increase the risk of iron, vitamin B12, folate and copper deficiencies, which can cause anaemia. Results on the prevalence of nutritional anaemias were also lacking. Further investigation into the prevalence of iron, vitamin B12, folate and copper deficiency and its impact on anaemia in bariatric surgery is needed.
Sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) of the eyelid is an aggressive malignant eyelid tumor, and it can metastasize to the regional lymph nodes and distant organs. There have been only a few reported cases of patients who underwent pulmonary metastasectomy for metastatic SGC. We herein report a patient who underwent repeat pulmonary metastasectomies for recurrent pulmonary metastases from SGC.
Bilateral small pulmonary nodules were detected in a 59-year-old woman with a history of eyelid SGC. She underwent wide wedge resection of the left lower lobe, and the disease was diagnosed as pulmonary metastases from SGC. Six months after the first pulmonary resection, CT showed that the nodules of right S2 and S10 had increased in size, and three small nodules had newly appeared in the right lung. The patient therefore underwent six wide wedge resections of the right lung through thoracotomy. After that, she underwent pulmonary metastasectomy 2 times. Ninety months after the first pulmonary resection, the patient is doing well without disease.

Our results suggest that storage method is important in microbiota studies and that the stabilization device may be useful in maintaining microbial profile integrity, especially for samples collected off-site and/or those undergoing temperature changes during shipment or storage.This study explored the impact of gold nanoparticles on the metabolic activity and morphology of human pulmonary endothelial cell monolayers. We developed a gold nanoparticle library of three different sizes and two surface chemistries that include anionic citrate and the cationic polyelectrolyte poly(allylamine hydrochloride). The nanoparticles were characterized in cell culture medium to assess how their physical properties are altered after exposure to biological fluids. A bovine serum albumin pretreatment protocol was developed to stabilize the nanoparticles in cell culture medium. Results of this study show that an 18 h exposure of human pulmonary artery endothelial cells to the different nanoparticles modestly affects cellular metabolic activity. However, nanoparticle exposure perturbs the cortical actin networks and induces the formation of intercellular gaps. In particular, exposure to the poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-coated particles reduces the area of cell-cell junctions-a change that correlates with increased leakiness of endothelial barriers. The presence of excess polyelectrolyte capping agents in the supernatant of poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-coated nanoparticles significantly impacts endothelial morphology. Pretreatment of the particle supernatant with bovine serum albumin mitigates the negative effects of free or bound polyelectrolytes on endothelial cell monolayers.Eyespots evolved independently in many taxa as anti-predator signals. Although eye patterns and gaze modify human behaviour, anti-predator eyespots do not occur naturally in contemporary mammals. Here we show that eyespots painted on cattle rumps were associated with reduced attacks by ambush carnivores (lions and leopards). Cattle painted with eyespots were significantly more likely to survive than were cross-marked and unmarked cattle, despite all treatment groups being similarly exposed to predation risk. While higher survival of eyespot-painted cattle supports the detection hypothesis, increased survival of cross-marked cattle suggests an effect of novel and conspicuous marks more generally. To our knowledge, this is the first time eyespots have been shown to deter large mammalian predators. Applying artificial marks to high-value livestock may therefore represent a cost-effective tool to reduce livestock predation.Although electroporation has been widely accepted as the main gene transfer tool, there is still considerable scope to improve the electroporation efficiency of exogenous DNAs into primary cells. Here, we developed a square-wave pulsing protocol using OptiMEM-GlutaMAX for highly efficient transfection of murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) and induced pluripotency stem (iPS) cells using reporter genes as well as gRNA/Cas9-encoding plasmids. An electrotransfection efficiency of > 95% was achieved for both MEF and iPS cells using reporter-encoding plasmids. The protocol was efficient for plasmid sizes ranging from 6.2 to 13.5 kb. Inducing the error prone non-homologous end joining repair by gRNA/Cas9 plasmid transfection, a high rate of targeted gene knockouts of up to 98% was produced in transgenic cells carrying a single-copy of Venus reporter. We developed a gold nanoparticle library of three different sizes and two surface chemistries that include anionic citrate and the cationic polyelectrolyte poly(allylamine hydrochloride). The nanoparticles were characterized in cell culture medium to assess how their physical properties are altered after exposure to biological fluids. A bovine serum albumin pretreatment protocol was developed to stabilize the nanoparticles in cell culture medium. Results of this study show that an 18 h exposure of human pulmonary artery endothelial cells to the different nanoparticles modestly affects cellular metabolic activity. However, nanoparticle exposure perturbs the cortical actin networks and induces the formation of intercellular gaps. Ninety-six patients who were operated at our hospital were selected for this study. Patients with single-segment lumbar disc herniation were admitted to the hospital from March 2018 to March 2019 and were randomly divided into the observation group and the control group with 48 cases in each group. The former group underwent lumbar discectomy and the latter underwent laparotomy and nucleus pulpectomy. Surgical effects were compared between the two groups.
In terms of surgical indicators, the observation group had a longer operation time, shorter postoperative bedtime and hospital stay, less intraoperative blood loss, and smaller incision length than the control group (
< 0.05). The excellent recovery rate did not differ significantly between the observation group (93.75%) and the control group (91.67%). Visual analogue scale pain scores were significantly lower in the observation group than in the control group at 1 d, 3 d, 1 mo, and 6 mo after surgery (

While controlling for confounding effects, none of the uterine parameters appeared to be a significant predictor of LBR among nulliparous and parous women (P>0.05 in all cases). A subsequent analysis of endometrial length was done, whereby the endometrial lengths were divided into quartiles (20.0-32.2mm; 32.3-36.5mm; 36.6-40.0mm; 40.1-54.0mm). After controlling for confounders, the shortest quartile in the nulliparous group had a significantly lower LBR (P=0.02) than the other groups. In-vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes recovered during ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is often practised, although it is still considered experimental. To date, only a few studies have examined the success of this maturation process in pre-menarche girls. The aim of this study was to examine the outcomes of IVM of oocytes recovered during OTC in pre-menarche patients scheduled for onco-therapy.
A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary university-affiliated hospital. A total of 93 patients aged 0-25 years who underwent OTC as part of onco-fertility preservation between 2007 and 2019 were included in the study. Oocytes were recovered from the medium after OTC and matured over 48 h. Oocyte development and maturation rate were recorded and compared between different age groups.
Patient's age was not correlated linearly with the total number of mature oocytes R = 0.2. The absolute maturation rate in post-menarche and pre-menarche patients differed significantly (38.0% versus 25.3%, respectively; P > 0.001), whereas the degeneration rate of the oocytes did not (39.8% versus 33.5%; P = 0.167). The pre-menarche group had significantly lower mean number of metaphase II oocytes compared with the post-menarche group (2.8 [±2.3] versus 5.6 [±4.6]; P = 0.01; 95% CI -4.62 to -0.46). Oocytes recovered from patients aged 1-5 years demonstrated low maturation rate.

Is it possible to establish a visualized clinical model predicting good quality blastocyst (GQB) formation for patients in their first IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycle?
A total of 4783 patients in their first IVF/ICSI cycle between January 2015 and December 2019 were retrospectively included and randomly divided into the training set (n=3826) and the testing set (n=957) in an 82 ratio. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was adopted to select the most critical predictors for GQB formation to construct a visualized nomogram model based on the data of patients in the training set. Receiver operating characteristic and calibration curves were used to evaluate the predictive accuracy and discriminative ability. The performance of the model was also validated on independent data from patients treated in the testing set.
Maternal age, maternal serum anti-Müllerian hormone (MsAMH) concentration and the number of oocytes retrieved were highlighted as critical predictors of GQB development and were incorporated into the nomogram model. Based on the area under the curve (AUC) values, the predictive ability for ≥1, ≥3 and ≥5 GQB were 0.831, 0.734 and 0.748, respectively. The calibration curve also showed high concordance between the observed and predicted results. The use of baseline endometrial length to predict live birth is no better than chance, while cervical length only predicts failure to live birth. In-vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes recovered during ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is often practised, although it is still considered experimental. To date, only a few studies have examined the success of this maturation process in pre-menarche girls. The aim of this study was to examine the outcomes of IVM of oocytes recovered during OTC in pre-menarche patients scheduled for onco-therapy. A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary university-affiliated hospital. A total of 93 patients aged 0-25 years who underwent OTC as part of onco-fertility preservation between 2007 and 2019 were included in the study. Oocytes were recovered from the medium after OTC and matured over 48 h. Oocyte development and maturation rate were recorded and compared between different age groups. Patient's age was not correlated linearly with the total number of mature oocytes R = 0.2. The absolute maturation rate in post-menarche and pre-menarche patients differed significantly (38.0% versus 25.3%, respectively; P > 0.001), whereas the degeneration rate of the oocytes did not (39.8% versus 33.5%; P = 0.167). The pre-menarche group had significantly lower mean number of metaphase II oocytes compared with the post-menarche group (2.8 [±2.3] versus 5.6 [±4.6]; P = 0.01; 95% CI -4.62 to -0.46). Oocytes recovered from patients aged 1-5 years demonstrated low maturation rate. Oocytes recovered from pre-menarche girls, and especially those younger than the age of 5 years who undergo fertility preservation, have a lower chance of reaching maturity in IVM compared with older women. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was adopted to select the most critical predictors for GQB formation to construct a visualized nomogram model based on the data of patients in the training set. Receiver operating characteristic and calibration curves were used to evaluate the predictive accuracy and discriminative ability. The performance of the model was also validated on independent data from patients treated in the testing set. Twenty-seven semi-structured interviews and four focus group discussions were conducted with a variety of HCPs, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals. The study was conducted in three public hospitals and a network of primary healthcare centers in the United Arab Emirates. Interviews and focus group discussions were transcribed and analyzed using a theoretical thematic analysis approach.
The results showed that a number of psychosocial risks were prevalent during the course of accreditation. HCPs faced increased work demands during such a process, including increased working hours, increased working pace, perceived time pressure, and conflicting information. Such demands were perceived to influence not only their health but also their families as well as patients' care. In contrast, teamwork and coworker support were vital to mitigate the effect of such demands.
This study identified emerging risks during the process of accreditation. The findings show that the process of accreditation increases work-related risks before the inspection visit. Food preferences, choices and eating habits are notoriously hard to change as they are a central aspect of people's lifestyles and their socio-cultural environment. Many people already hold positive attitudes toward sustainable food, but the notable gap between favorable attitudes and actual purchase and consumption of more sustainable food products remains to be bridged. The current work aims to (1) present a comprehensive theoretical framework for future research on ESFC, and (2) highlight behavioral solutions for environmental challenges in the food domain from an interdisciplinary perspective. First, starting from the premise that food consumption is deliberately or unintentionally directed at attaining goals, a goal-directed framework for understanding and influencing ESFC is built. To engage in goal-directed behavior, people typicall confronting extant literature with the theoretical framework. Altogether, the analysis yields a set of 33 future research questions in the interdisciplinary food domain that deserve to be addressed with the aim of fostering ESFC in the short and long term.This study aimed to analyze the elite badminton players' on-court movements related to contextual variables (game, round, and match status). A total of 18 matches of the Jakarta 2015 World Championship (1,273 points and 5,710 play actions) were examined by univariate and bivariate analyses. Significant differences were found when comparing the players' on-court movements related to game, round, and match status (p less then 0.05). All movements were executed more frequently in game 2, with the exception of diagonal large backward left (DLBL), diagonal short backward left (DSBL), diagonal short backward right (DSBR), and longitudinal short backward (LSB). The results obtained related to the round showed that longitudinal large backward (LLB) was the most frequent footwork in R1/16 and R1/2, diagonal short forward left (DSFL) was the most frequent one for R1/4, and transversal short right (TSR) was the most used movement for the final round. According to match status, no movement (NM) was the most common situation before hitting the shuttlecock at any moment during the match. This study shows how contextual variables modulate the elite players' on-court movements. This information could be valuable for coaches and players, allowing them to better understand the players' behavior in a competition, which could be used to design more specific training tasks and prepare match strategies in order to improve the players' performance in competitions.We investigated if viewing cute pictures could improve fine motor skills and prolong quiet eye (QE) duration. The aims of this study were 3-fold firstly, to test the Sport Drug Control Model for Adolescent Athletes (SDCM-AA); secondly, to generate athlete profiles that would help quantify the proportion of athletes who are at risk of doping; and thirdly, to create norm values for the Adolescent Sport Doping Inventory (ASDI), which would allow national doping organizations, sporting organizations, and clubs to benchmark the scores of their athletes for key psycho-social variables linked to doping. A total of 2208 adolescent athletes from the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, and the United States completed the ASDI. The data presented an appropriate fit to the SDCM-AA model, in which 54% of the variance in susceptibility to doping was explained in the model, and 44.

A previous study reported that the far-red fluorophore TO-PRO-3 (642/661), usually employed as a nuclear dye in fixed tissue, was selectively captured by live pericytes from the subventricular zone. Herein, we validated TO-PRO-3 as a specific pericyte tracer in the nervous system (NS). Living pericytes from ex vivo murine hippocampus, cortex, spinal cord, and retina robustly incorporated TO-PRO-3. Classical pericyte immunomarkers such as chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan neuron-glial antigen 2 (NG2) and platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta antigen (PDGFrβ) and the new pericyte dye NeuroTrace 500/525 confirmed cellular specificity of dye uptake. The TO-PRO-3 signal enabled quantification of pericytes density and morphometry; likewise, TO-PRO-3 labeling allowed visualization of pericytes associated with other components of the neurovascular unit. A subset of TO-PRO-3 stained cells expressed the contractile protein α-SMA, indicative of their ability to control the capillary diameter. Uptake of TO-PRO-3 was independent of connexin/pannexin channels but was highly sensitive to temperature and showed saturation, suggesting that a yet unidentified protein-mediated active transport sustained dye incorporation. Results show significant likelihood of online gambling among those classified as high-risk gamblers (according to the Problem Gambling Severity Index) and those with past experience of online gambling, though migration from land-based gambling was apparent. Among high-risk online gamblers, the most predictive risk factors included moderate and severe anxiety and depression, reduced work hours, being influenced to gamble due to COVID-19, gambling under the influence of cannabis or alcohol and risky gambling motives tied to mental health concerns, including gambling because it helps with nervousness and depression, chasing gambling losses and seeking to earn income. This study has confirmed many of the risk associations presented in emerging COVID-19-related studies and past research on global economic crisis relating to gambling risk, mental health concerns and substance use. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis show that fit indices are all within an acceptable limit. The FCV-19S was also significantly and positively correlated with preventive behavior (r = .328, p less then .01) and general anxiety (r = .458, p less then .01). The results of independent sample t tests show that women (t = 4.086, p less then 0.001), married people (t = - 2.709, p less then .001), and unemployed people (t = - 3.199, p less then 0.001) of the KPK experienced great fear of COVID-19. All-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide, two widely used drugs in APL therapy, exert synergistic effects on controlling super-enhancer-associated PML/RARα-regulated targets in APL cells. We utilize a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments to demonstrate that PML/RARα-activated target gene GFI1 is necessary for the maintenance of APL cells, and that PML/RARα, likely oligomerized, transactivates GFI1 through chromatin conformation at the super-enhancer region. The BW205 was lower (P less then 0.001; I2 = 92.6%) when cows consumed ME above the recommended levels in the second trimester of pregnancy (2TRI) and 3TRI. Conversely, the ADG was higher when cows consumed CP (P = 0.032; I2 = 96.1%) and ME (P less then 0.001; I2 = 96.1%) above the required levels. The steers whose mothers consumed CP and ME above the required levels during the 3TRI were slaughtered 5.5 days earlier (P = 0.015; I2 = 98.5%) compared to other steers. The marbling was higher (P less then 0.001; I2 = 91.7%) in calves born to mothers consuming CP and ME above the recommended levels, regardless of the gestation phase. The FT was higher (P less then 0.001; I2 = 0%) in the offspring of cows that consumed CP and ME above the required levels during the 3TRI. Thus, CP and ME intake, at levels higher than those recommended by the NRC, by pregnant cows in the 3TRI reduces the progeny weight up to 205 days of age. However, this is advantageous during the finishing phase, as it reduces slaughter age and increases the ADG and carcass quality by improving marbling and FT.
Prematurity has been identified as a risk factor for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The link between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and birth-week has not been strongly evidenced. We evaluated the correlation between the degree of prematurity and the incidence of autism in a cohort of 871 children born prematurely and followed from birth. The cohort was reduced to 416 premature infants born between 2011-2017 who were followed for 2-14 years, and analyzed according to birth week (degree of prematurity), and according to gender.
43 children (10.3%) received a definite diagnosis of ASD. There was a significant correlation between birth week and the risk of ASD, with 22.6% of children diagnosed with ASD when born at 25 weeks, versus 6% of ASD diagnoses at 31 weeks of prematurity. For children born after 32 weeks, the incidence decreased to 8-12.5%. A strong link was found between earlier birth week and increased autism risk; the risk remained elevated during near-term prematurity in boys. A correlation between early birth week and an elevated risk for ASD was seen in all children, but accentuated in females, gradually decreasing as birth week progresses; in males the risk for ASD remains elevated for any birth week.
A statistically significant increase in rates of autism was found with each additional week of prematurity. Females drove this direct risk related to degree of prematurity, while males had an elevated risk throughout prematurity weeks, even at near-term. We recommend including ASD screening in follow up of infants born prematurely, at all levels of prematurity.

Here, we investigated peroxisomal protein import and its dynamics in mitotic mammalian cells. In mitotically arrested cells, Pex14p is phosphorylated at Ser-232, resulting in a lower import efficiency of catalase, but not the majority of proteins including canonical PTS1 proteins. Conformational change induced by the mitotic phosphorylation of Pex14p more likely increases homomeric interacting affinity and suppresses topological change of its N-terminal part, thereby giving rise to the retardation of Pex5p export in mitotic cells.
