The microbial community in the plant rhizosphere is vital to plant productivity and disease resistance. Alterations in the composition and diversity of species within this community could be detrimental if microbes suppressing the activity of pathogens are removed. Species of the insect-pathogenic fungus, Metarhizium, commonly employed as biological control agents against crop pests, have recently been identified as plant root colonizers and provide a variety of benefits (e.g. growth promotion, drought resistance, nitrogen acquisition). However, the impact of Metarhizium amendment on the rhizosphere microbiome has yet to be elucidated. Using Illumina sequencing, we examined the community profiles (bacteria and fungi) of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) rhizosphere (loose soil and plant root) after amendment with M. robertsii conidia, in the presence and absence of an insect host. Although alpha diversity was not significantly affected overall, there were numerous examples of plant growth-promoting organisms that significantly increased with Metarhizium amendment (Bradyrhizobium, Flavobacterium, Chaetomium, Trichoderma). Specifically, the abundance of Bradyrhizobium, a group of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, was confirmed to be increased using a qPCR assay with genus-specific primers. In addition, the ability of the microbiome to suppress the activity of a known bean root pathogen was assessed. The development of disease symptoms after application with Fusarium solani f. sp. phaseoli was visible in the hypocotyl and upper root of plants grown in sterilized soil but was suppressed during growth in microbiome soil and soil treated with M. robertsii. Successful amendment of agricultural soils with biocontrol agents such as Metarhizium necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the effects on the diversity of the rhizosphere microbiome. Such research is fundamentally important towards sustainable agricultural practices to improve overall plant health and productivity.Myalgic encephalomyelitis/ Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) has been associated with abnormalities in mitochondrial function. In this study we have analysed previous bioenergetics data in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) using new techniques in order to further elucidate differences between ME/CFS and healthy control cohorts. We stratified our ME/CFS cohort into two individual cohorts representing moderately and severely affected patients in order to determine if disease severity is associated with bioenergetic function in PBMCs. Both ME/CFS cohorts showed reduced mitochondrial function when compared to a healthy control cohort. This shows that disease severity does not correlate with mitochondrial function and even those with a moderate form of the disease show evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction. Equations devised by another research group have enabled us to calculate ATP-linked respiration rates and glycolytic parameters. Parameters of glycolytic function were calculated by taking into account respiratory acidification. This revealed severely affected ME/CFS patients to have higher rates of respiratory acidification and showed the importance of accounting for respiratory acidification when calculating parameters of glycolytic function. Analysis of previously published glycolysis data, after taking into account respiratory acidification, showed severely affected patients have reduced glycolysis compared to moderately affected patients and healthy controls. Rates of ATP-linked respiration were also calculated and shown to be lower in both ME/CFS cohorts. This study shows that severely affected patients have mitochondrial and glycolytic impairments, which sets them apart from moderately affected patients who only have mitochondrial impairment. This may explain why these patients present with a more severe phenotype.This study was designed to test the efficacy of an air treatment using ozone and relative humidity (RH) for the inactivation of airborne viruses. Four phages (φX174, PR772, MS2 and φ6) and one eukaryotic virus (murine norovirus MNV-1) were exposed to low ozone concentrations (1.23 ppm for phages and 0.23 ppm for MNV-1) and various levels of RH for 10 to 70 minutes. The inactivation of these viruses was then assessed to determine which of the tested conditions provided the greatest reduction in virus infectivity. An inactivation of at least two orders of magnitude for φX174, MS2 and MNV-1 was achieved with an ozone exposure of 40 minutes at 85% RH. For PR772 and φ6, exposure to the reference condition at 20% RH for 10 minutes yielded the same results. These findings suggest that ozone used at a low concentration is a powerful disinfectant for airborne viruses when combined with a high RH. Our objective was to compare ectopic fat and metabolic profiles among representative individuals with COPD and control subjects and to evaluate whether the presence of COPD alters the metabolic risk profile. Study participants were randomly selected from the general population and prospectively classified as non-COPD controls and COPD, according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease classification. The metabolic phenotype, which consisted of visceral adipose tissue area, metabolic markers including homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and blood lipid profile, was obtained in 144 subjects with COPD and 119 non-COPD controls. The metabolic phenotype was similar in COPD and controls. The odds ratios for having pathologic values for HOMA-IR, lipids and visceral adipose tissue area were similar in individuals with COPD and control subjects in multivariate analyses that took into account age, sex, body mass index, tobacco status and current medications. Wrinkling offers a platform for 2D materials to be applied in some promising fields such as field emitters, energy containers and suppliers, field effect transistors, hydrophobic surfaces, sensors for flexible electronics and artificial intelligence. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of wrinkled 2D materials in the near future are discussed.Graphene oxide is the hot topic in biomedical and pharmaceutical research of the current decade. However, its complex interactions with human blood components complicate the transition from the promising in vitro results to clinical settings. Even though graphene oxide is made with the same atoms as our organs, tissues and cells, its bi-dimensional nature causes unique interactions with blood proteins and biological membranes and can lead to severe effects like thrombogenicity and immune cell activation. In this review, we will describe the journey of graphene oxide after injection into the bloodstream, from the initial interactions with plasma proteins to the formation of the "biomolecular corona", and biodistribution. We will consider the link between the chemical properties of graphene oxide (and its functionalized/reduced derivatives), protein binding and in vivo response. We will also summarize data on biodistribution and toxicity in view of the current knowledge of the influence of the biomolecular corona on these processes. Our aim is to shed light on the unsolved problems regarding the graphene oxide corona to build the groundwork for the future development of drug delivery technology.Self-assembled soft nanocarriers that are capable of simultaneous encapsulation of both lipophilic and water soluble payloads have significantly enhanced controlled delivery applications in biomedicine. These nanoarchitectures, such as liposomes, polymersomes and cubosomes, are primarily composed of either amphiphilic polymers or lipids, with the polymeric variants generally possessing greater stability and control over biodistribution and bioresponsive release. Polymersomes have long demonstrated such advantages over their lipid analogs, liposomes, but only recently have bicontinuous nanospheres emerged as a polymeric cubic phase alternative to lipid cubosomes. In this review, we summarize the current state of the field for bicontinuous nanosphere formulation and characterization and suggest future directions for this nascent delivery platform as it is adopted for biomedical applications.BACKGROUND Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The clinical outcome of EOC remains unsatisfactory with current therapeutic approaches such as surgery and platinum/taxane-based chemotherapy. Here, we explored whether RNF126, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, is a potential biomarker for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of 122 EOC patients. The chi-square test was used to assess correlations between RNF126 level and clinical characteristics of enrolled patients. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to monitor the prognosis of enrolled patients. In addition, proliferation and invasion assays were conducted to assess the cellular effects of RNF126 on SKOV3 cell progression. RESULTS Immunohistochemistry analysis (IHC) revealed that RNF126 was upregulated in EOC tissues compared to adjacent ovarian tissues. In addition, RNF126 expression was remarkably associated with LN metastasis, pathological differentiation, and FIGO stage. RNF126 protein level was found to be an independent biomarker for predication of prognosis in ovarian cancer patients. Cellular results showed that RNF126 enhanced the proliferation and invasion abilities of SKOV3 cells. This paper describes and evaluates the scaling algorithms implemented within the DIALS data-processing package and demonstrates the effectiveness and key features of the implementation on example macromolecular crystallographic rotation data. In particular, the scaling algorithms enable new workflows for the scaling of multi-crystal or multi-sweep data sets, providing the analysis required to support current trends towards collecting data from ever-smaller samples.

This article will review the embryological development of the testicles. However, to understand the embryology of the testicles, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the normal anatomy of the testicles. The male gonads, otherwise known as the testicles, are sex glands that have both an exocrine secretory function in the production of sperm and an endocrinological function as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in men through the production of androgens. The normal anatomy of the testicles is that of an oval shape located in the scrotum, further separated by the scrotal septum. The length of the testis is between 3 cm to 5 cm, whereas the width is between 2 cm to 3 cm. The consistency of normal testicles on palpation is smooth and soft. The testes are suspended superiorly by the spermatic cord and inferior to the scrotum by the scrotal ligament. During embryological development, the scrotal ligament is also known as the gubernaculum. The tunica vaginalis is a double-layered structure that covers all of the testes apart from the posterior and superior borders, which represent the attachment of the epididymis and spermatic cord. The posterior lateral testis has a small space between the body of the epididymis and the testis. This small space is known as the sinus of the epididymis. The tunica albuginea is found deep to the tunica vaginalis. It is a thick fibrous sheath which covers the testes. The descent of the testicles is a complex stepwise process that involves an interaction between many anatomical structures, environmental influences, regulatory hormones, and inherited genetic factors.A choledochal cyst (CC) has traditionally been considered as a cystic dilation of the extrahepatic bile duct. Choledochal cysts are now termed biliary cysts to include intrahepatic cysts also. Biliary cysts are defined as cystic dilations involving the biliary tree at single or multiple segments of both the extrahepatic as well as intrahepatic bile ducts. In 1959 Alonso-LEJ et al. were the first to classify CC into 3 types based on the site of the biliary duct dilation. It was not until 1977 when Todani et al. modified the latter classification by adding 2 types of CCs. This five-category classification is the most commonly used by clinicians today; however, it is in dispute by some experts who claim that each type of CC has its natural course, complications, and management. It is proposed that a classification that focuses more on the pathogenesis rather than the simple anatomy of the biliary tree is recommended. Choledochal cyst is a rare anomaly that is, at times, considered a premalignant condition, which often poses a diagnostic dilemma. The typical presentation of this condition is non-specific. Healthcare teams must have a high clinical suspicion of choledochal cysts while investigating patients with jaundice, abdominal pain, and palpable abdominal mass. Due to the vague nature of these symptoms and physical findings, proper imaging studies are crucial for its diagnosis. Excision of the CC has shown excellent results with an 89% event-free rate and an overall 5-year survival rate above 90%. This article will review the embryological development of the testicles. However, to understand the embryology of the testicles, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the normal anatomy of the testicles. The male gonads, otherwise known as the testicles, are sex glands that have both an exocrine secretory function in the production of sperm and an endocrinological function as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in men through the production of androgens. The normal anatomy of the testicles is that of an oval shape located in the scrotum, further separated by the scrotal septum. The length of the testis is between 3 cm to 5 cm, whereas the width is between 2 cm to 3 cm. The consistency of normal testicles on palpation is smooth and soft. The testes are suspended superiorly by the spermatic cord and inferior to the scrotum by the scrotal ligament. During embryological development, the scrotal ligament is also known as the gubernaculum. The tunica vaginalis is a double-layered structure that covers all of the testes apart from the posterior and superior borders, which represent the attachment of the epididymis and spermatic cord. METHODS In this randomized clinical trial, 30 female patients with IGM were randomly allocated to receive low dose or high dose prednisolone. First group received 5 mg daily prednisolone, while the second group received 50 mg for three days, 25 mg for the next three days and then 12.5 mg for further three days and 5 mg daily afterwards, both for two months. Patients were evaluated 2, 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment. The success and recurrence rate was compared between groups. RESULTS High dose group had significantly higher rate of remission compared to low dose group (93.3% vs. 53.3%, p=0.03). One patient in high dose group and 5 patients in low dose group underwent lumpectomy due to persistent symptoms. Two other patients in low dose group received high dose treatment after three months due to no change in symptoms. Among patients with remission, recurrence was also significantly lower in high dose compared to low dose prednisolone (0% vs. 37.5%, p=0.04). CONCLUSION High dose prednisolone has high success rate with lower recurrence in the treatment of IGM and could reduce the need for surgery. Group IV 100 patients having the history of tobacco consumption and having apparent precancerous lesions like leukoplakia, erythroplakia. Group V100 patients having frank oral cancer. The grade of dysplasia in these patients was statically correlated with the levels of serum and salivary ALP and LDH. This study aimed at investigating the role of miR-19a as a biomarker with acceptable sensitivity and specificity for early diagnosis of AMI. METHODS We studied 175 patients with AMI admitted within 12 h of symptom onset and 90 healthy subjects as control group. Patients were divided into two groups, including group I (normal vessels and no significant artery stenosis) and primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) group II (patients with more than 50% stenosis in vessels and severe atherosclerosis) diagnosed by angiography. The expression level of miR-19a was evaluated by the real-time polymerase chain reaction and other serum chemistries were also analyzed. RESULTS The results demonstrated that circulating miR-19a levels were significantly increased in patient groups compared to the control group (2.88 ± 1.06 vs. 5.93 ± 1.28, P less then 0.0001). We also found that miR-19a levels were higher in group II (134.62-fold) than group I (15.42-fold). The upper levels of miR-19a were significantly correlated with the increased serum levels of CK-MB (ρ=0.29, P less then 0.0001), CTn I (ρ=0.4, P less then 0.0001) and creatinine (ρ=0.27, P less then 0.0001). In addition, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that circulating miR-19a had considerable diagnostic accuracy for the patients with normal vessel with an AUC of 0.930 (95% CI 0.697-0.765) and for PCI patients with an AUC of 0.966 (95% CI 0.748-0.784). CONCLUSION Circulating miR-19a possibly has prognostic value to be used as a promising molecular target for early diagnosis and prognosis of AMI.

To identify sociodemographic and metabolic correlates of weight categories in postmenopausal women. Methods The Women's Health Initiative enrolled 161 808 postmenopausal women ages 50-79. We included those free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and with CVD risk factors and biomarkers (n = 19 412). Normal weight was defined as a BMI ≥18.5 and less then 25 kg/m2 and waist circumference less then 88 cm and overweight/obesity as a BMI ≥25 kg/m2 or waist circumference ≥88 cm. Metabolically healthy was based on less then 2 and metabolically unhealthy ≥2 traits triglycerides ≥150 mg/dl, systolic blood pressure (BP) ≥130 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥85 mmHg or antihypertensives or diuretics, fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dl or diabetes medication, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol less then 50 mg/dl. Polytomous multinomial logistic regression with generalized link logit function provided the odds of metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUHNW), metabolically healthy overweight/obese (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy overweight/obese (MUHO) according to demographic and risk factor measures. Results Among the 19 412 postmenopausal women, 2369 (12.2%) participants had prevalent diabetes. Advanced age was associated with an increased odds of MUHNW as compared with the MHNW after adjusting for covariates [odds ratio (OR) 1.04, P less then 0.0001]. Black/African American ethnicity was associated with a decreased odds of MUHNW (OR 0.64, P less then 0.0001) and MUHO (OR 0.77, P = 0.0004), while an increased odds for MHO (OR 1.50, P less then 0.0001) as compared with White MHNW. We included those free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and with CVD risk factors and biomarkers (n = 19 412). Polytomous multinomial logistic regression with generalized link logit function provided the odds of metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUHNW), metabolically healthy overweight/obese (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy overweight/obese (MUHO) according to demographic and risk factor measures. Results Among the 19 412 postmenopausal women, 2369 (12.2%) participants had prevalent diabetes. Advanced age was associated with an increased odds of MUHNW as compared with the MHNW after adjusting for covariates [odds ratio (OR) 1.04, P less then 0.0001]. Black/African American ethnicity was associated with a decreased odds of MUHNW (OR 0.64, P less then 0.0001) and MUHO (OR 0.77, P = 0.0004), while an increased odds for MHO (OR 1.50, P less then 0.0001) as compared with White MHNW. Mean scene GCS was 12; 39 (24%) patients were intubated. Scene weight in kilograms improved 18% and pain documentation improved from 49% to 79% during the study. OBJECTIVE The Royal Flying Doctor Service Western Operations (RFDSWO) provides critical care transfer and retrieval services across 2.5 million km2 to a population of 2.58 million people, providing both primary and secondary retrievals across Western Australia. Flying on average 26 million km/y, retrievals are undertaken with the use of rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Our current fleet includes 16 Pilatus PC-12NGs turboprops, 2 Pilatus PC-24 jets, and access to 1 helicopter (**** 412). A Hawker XP800 Jet was retired in 2019 after 10 years of service. Our retrieval teams are formed of either a doctor and a nurse or a nurse only on fixed wing missions and a doctor and critical care paramedic for helicopter emergency medical services missions. We present our experiences and caseload statistics over the past 5 years. METHODS We performed an analysis of our retrieval database looking at the workload from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2016. This included the number of patients, age, ethnicity, type of retrieval,ION RFDSWO has 1 of the largest retrieval workloads in the world, covering a landmass comparable with Western Europe. This brings with it a variety of challenging cases and complex logistics, often in extremely harsh and remote environments. We bring a wide breadth of experience in the area of retrieval medicine, and our aim is to share these experiences with other teams. OBJECTIVE A checklist was developed to improve the ventilator management of pediatric patients for air medical transport with the aim of reducing the percentage of patients outside recommended parameters (no bag valve mask use, peripheral capillary oxygen saturation level > 90%, and end-tidal carbon dioxide level > 35 and 5 kg and less then 18 years) from July 2018 to January 2019. Parameters identified in the aim statement were used to evaluate effectiveness. After transport, a Likert survey concerning the value of the checklist was distributed. RESULTS Significant improvements in pediatric ventilator management were noted when teams used the checklist. The rate outside of aim parameters was reduced significantly from 41.3% (n = 92, June 2012-May 2018 preintervention) to 10% (n = 20, July 2018-January 2019 postintervention) after the improvement action was implemented (χ2 = 7.01, P = .008). The 5-point Likert survey results (n = 38, 4.68 ± .57) supported teams' improved comfort after checklist implementation. CONCLUSION The checklist improved ventilator management proficiency of pediatric patients and the comfort level of air medical teams providing care. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether prehospital point-of-care glucose is an independent predictor of hypotension in the adult trauma patient transported by air ambulance to the receiving trauma center. METHODS This retrospective chart review evaluated adult, nondiabetic trauma patients transported by air ambulance at 3 programs in the Midwest for the calendar year 2018. A total of 107 patients met the inclusion criteria. The primary analysis was the determination of an optimal cutoff for the blood glucose diagnostic for predicting a hypotensive outcome followed by chi-square incidence comparison. RESULTS The optimal diagnostic cutoff point using Youden's index (J) was determined to be a blood glucose value of 220 mg/dL or greater. Initial glucose values were associated with an increased relative risk of a hypotension outcome (P = .040). Glucose dichotomy was also associated with a mean decrease in systolic blood pressure during transport (P = .016). CONCLUSION The findings in this study indicate a point-of-care glucose measurement greater than 220 mg/dL should prompt prehospital clinicians to initiate aggressive balanced resuscitation before arrival at the receiving trauma center in order to prevent worsening hypotension and hemorrhagic shock. It is typically viewed as a "rescue" device and not a primary airway tool. However, its value as a primary device during plan A has recently been recognized. Two studies have shown increased first-pass success using a bougie on the initial attempt. Additionally, bougie use on every intubation increases provider comfort with the device so that, on a truly difficult intubation, the skills and mechanics are instilled. In the out-of-hospital and critical care transport settings, intubation is often inherently more difficult because of varying environments. METHODS From January 11 to 18, 2019, we were given temporary access to a portable X-ray system. This period is defined as the investigation term. During the investigation term, a medical chart review was retrospectively performed for all patients who were transported by the DH. We investigated the variables between cases in which an X-ray study had been performed (X-ray group) and had not been performed (control group). RESULTS Thirteen subjects were classified into the X-ray group, and 17 were classified into the control group. No X-ray studies were performed for patients who underwent interhospital transportation, and the proportion of cases involving patients with exogenous disease in the X-ray group was greater than that in the control group. CONCLUSION We reported our experience of DH staff performing X-ray studies at the scene. Further studies are required to determine the indications for using portable X-ray systems in the prehospital setting.

RESULTS The optimal diagnostic cutoff point using Youden's index (J) was determined to be a blood glucose value of 220 mg/dL or greater. Initial glucose values were associated with an increased relative risk of a hypotension outcome (P = .040). Glucose dichotomy was also associated with a mean decrease in systolic blood pressure during transport (P = .016). METHODS From January 11 to 18, 2019, we were given temporary access to a portable X-ray system. This period is defined as the investigation term. During the investigation term, a medical chart review was retrospectively performed for all patients who were transported by the DH. We investigated the variables between cases in which an X-ray study had been performed (X-ray group) and had not been performed (control group). RESULTS Thirteen subjects were classified into the X-ray group, and 17 were classified into the control group. No X-ray studies were performed for patients who underwent interhospital transportation, and the proportion of cases involving patients with exogenous disease in the X-ray group was greater than that in the control group. CONCLUSION We reported our experience of DH staff performing X-ray studies at the scene. Suaeda salsa and Salicornia europaea are both annual herbaceous species belonging to the Chenopodiaceae family, and often grow together through our observations in the Yellow River Delta Nature Reserve, and could be used as raw material to produce food and beverages in food industry due to its high nutritional value. In this study, we adopted widely targeted metabolomics to identify 822 and 694 metabolites in the leaves of S. salsa and S. europaea, respectively, to provide a basic data for the future development and utilization of these two species. We found that these two plants were rich in metabolic components with high medical value, such as flavonoids, alkaloids and coumarins. The high contents of branched chain amino acid in these two species may be an important factor for their adaptation to saline-alkali environments. In addition, the contents of glucosamine (FC = 7.70), maltose (FC = 9.34) and D-(+)-sucrose (FC = 7.19) increased significantly, and the contents of D-(+)-glucose, 2-propenyl (sinigrin) and fructose 1-phosphate were significantly increased in the leaves of S. salsa compared to S. europaea, indicating that some certain compounds in different plants have different sensitivity to salt stress. Our work provides new perspectives about important second metabolism pathways in salt tolerance between these two plants, which could be helpful for studying the tolerance mechanisms of wetland plants.BACKGROUND AND AIMS Nowadays, advanced age does not represent an absolute contraindication to kidney transplantation (KT). However, aging is frequently associated with multiple comorbidities and lower performance status, making KT candidates less surgically fit. Limited data are available on the impact of KT morbidity on elderly recipients' outcomes. METHODS Retrospective study on a single center cohort of 130 KT recipients over 65 years old, representing 16.2% of KT clinical series, during the period 2000-2018. Number and severity of comorbidities were evaluated with the Charlson Comorbidity index (CCI). RESULTS The median age at transplantation was 67 [IQR66-71] years and median CCI was 5 [IQR4-6]. The prevalence of postoperative complications with a Clavien-Dindo (C-D) severity score > 2 was 29%. Increasing age did not predict KT morbidity in terms of C-D score > 2, infectious, respiratory, cardiologic, urologic or vascular complications, delayed graft function, symptomatic lymphocele, bleeding, acute or chronic rejection. Conversely, CCI score was a predictor of overall complications with C-D score > 2, cardiologic, respiratory and vascular complications, and bleeding. Among others, CCI score, post-KT cardiologic complications, C-D score > 2 were identified as significant predictors of both early mortality and graft loss in univariate analysis. Increasing recipient age did not correlate with graft loss risk and graft loss did not impact patient survival. C-D score > 2 was a predictor of poor survival even in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS Elderly recipients showed a significant vulnerability to KT morbidity which correlates with CCI. METHODS All patients undergoing thoracolumbar three-column osteotomy between 2013 and 2016 with preoperative laboratory data were identified. Potential preoperative modifiable laboratory abnormalities (major and minor) were assessed including hyponatremia (sodium less then 130 and less then 135 mEq/L), anemia (hematocrit less then 25% and less then 30%), renal insufficiency (creatinine ≥ 1.8 and ≥ 1.2 mg/dL), coagulopathy (INR ≥ 1.8 and ≥ 1.2), and hypoalbuminemia (albumin less then 2.5 and less then 3.5 g/dL). Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine associations with 30-day complications after controlling for possible confounding factors. RESULTS A total of 195 patients were identified. The rates of major and minor preoperative laboratory abnormalities were 7.7% and 31.3%, respectively. The rates of serious medical, minor medical, and surgical complications over 30-days were 6.7%, 21.5%, and 10.3%, respectively. In multivariate analysis the presence of major preoperative laboratory abnormalities had a significant association with serious medical complications (odds ratio [OR] 77.8, P less then 0.001), and minor medical complications (OR 13.3, P less then 0.001), but not surgical complications (P = 0.243). The presence of minor preoperative laboratory abnormalities had a significant association with serious medical complications (OR 10.4, P = 0.041) and minor medical complications (OR 2.4, P = 0.045), but not surgical complications (P = 0.490). BACKGROUND Futsal is a team sport involving intermittent technical actions of high intensity, and high physical (strength) and muscular demands. In this regard, the Tensiomyography (TMG) is a useful and non-invasive tool for the monitoring and assessment of the muscle's contractile capacity. This study aimed to analyze the changes in the contractile properties produced during the season, as well as to determine the potential cumulative effect of a resistance training (RT) program in futsal players. METHODS Fourteen elite futsal players (2 goalkeepers, 4 defenders, 4 wingers and 3 pivots) were assessed by TMG at 11th, 18th, and 28th week of the season. The maximal radial displacement of the muscle belly (Dm); contraction time (Tc); delay time (Td) and radial displacement velocity (90%) Dm (VrD90) were assessed. The videos were presented with temporal occlusion corresponding to predetermined approaching distances (7.5m, 5.0m, and 2.5m). Swimmers were required to simulate a typical position for exiting the block and to estimate the time-to-contact of the incoming swimmer. The EBT was collected during a real 4x100m freestyle competition before and after the application of the training programme. RESULTS Female swimmers showed a decreased in EBT, with an improvement of 1.42%, despite there not being a significant difference (p= 0.68). The male swimmers had a higher improvement in EBT after the training, with a decrease of 13.34% (p= 0.68). CONCLUSIONS Visual perception practice using video occlusion techniques seems to have a positive effect. METHODS Thirty-seven volunteers were randomly selected into the functional multicomponent training (MFT n=15), traditional multicomponent training (MTT n=14) and control group (CG n=8). They were assessed in the tests 6-minute walk test (6MWT), 10-minute fast walking test (10FWT), time up and go (TUG), functional reach test (FRT), ankle test (AKT), sit to stand modified (STSM) and quality of life (QOF). ANOVA (3x2) followed by bonferroni post hoc was used, adopting p ≤0.05 for statistical significance. RESULTS When compared pre-post values, MFT showed significant differences in all functional tests evaluated (AKT p less then 0.01; STSM p less then 0.01; FRT p less then 0.01; QOF p less then 0.01; 10FWT p less then 0.01; 6MWT p less then 0.01; TUG p less then 0.05). In the same comparison, MTT showed a significant change in all tests (AKT p less then 0.01; STSM p less then 0.01; FRT p less then 0.01; QOF p less then 0.05; 6MWT p≤0.05; TUG p less then 0.05) except 10FWT. When compared to CG, MFT showed a significant difference in all walking tests and MTT showed a better performance in 10FWT and TUG. The subjects completed an incremental test to exhaustion and a 3 km race on a treadmill to evaluate their physiological responses and endurance running performance respectively, prior and after 4 weeks (8 sessions, twice a week) of acupuncture treatment. RESULTS AC treatment had a significant main effect in T3km [F(1, 21)=7,173, p=0,014, partial η2=0,255], as well as in VT [F(1, 21)=8,476, p=0,008, partial η2=0,288] and HRmax@3km [F(1, 21)=4,930, p=0,038, partial η2=0,190], after controlling for the effect of the pre-test, while no other significant main effects were detected. CONCLUSIONS Healthy physically active adults significantly improved their endurance running performance after 4 weeks of AC treatment. METHODS The sample of the study consisted of 70 old people randomly appointed to the exercise and control groups (35 people for each) with mobility disabilities. A new exercise program was conducted for old people in the exercise group for 6 months. Evaluation between 1st and 24th week included cognitive change, mobility, balance and walking parameters. RESULTS Exercise group showed better performance on orientation, memory and language point than before the intervention (p less then 0.05). Again, the total mental test score of the exercise group significantly increased from [18.7±3.5] to [20.
