    Clinical data for patients undergoing DP between 2011 and 2018 were reviewed. Primary outcome was hospital readmission at 90 days after surgery.     There was a significant total effect of maternal HbA
    on offspring glucose and 1/insulin. Specifically, we observed a positive trend across tertiles of HbA
    and offspring glucose (p trend <0.001), and an inverse trend across tertiles of HbA
    and offspring 1/insulin (p trend = 0.04). For instance, compared with offspring of women in the lowest tertile of HbA
    , those whose mothers were in the second and third tertiles had 0.04mmol/l (95% CI -0.05, 0.13) and 0.17mmol/l (95% CI 0.08, 0.26) higher fasting glucose concentrations at age 4-7years, respectively. An indigenous Gram-positive bacterium isolated from fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) has known to potentially accumulate PHA. Various nutritional elements like carbon, nitrogen, phosphate and C/N ratio were optimized. The indigenous B.t.A102 strain grown in optimized RC medium yielded PHA of about 3.25 g/L. The extracted polymer was characterized by NMR, GC-MS, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis via TGA & DTA. The characterized PHA was used to prepare scaffold using the solvent casting method. The non-toxic nature of the composite material was evaluated on NIH/3T3 fibroblast cell lines using different staining (like Giemsa staining, AO/EB dual staining, neutral red staining) techniques and cell viability assay.     To evaluate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of elderly nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients receiving intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).

    From June 2008 to October 2014, 148 newly diagnosed non-metastatic elderly NPC patients (aged ≥ 70years) receiving IMRT were recruited. Comorbid condition was evaluated using the age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (ACCI). Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate survival rates and the differences were compared using log-rank test. Hazard ratio (HR) and the associated 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using Cox proportional hazard model by means of multivariate analysis.

    The median follow-up time was 66.35months. Estimated OS rate at 5years for the entire group was 61.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.542-0.703). The 5-year OS rate of RT alone group was 58.4% (95% [CI] 0.490-0.696) compared with 65.2% (95% [CI] 0.534-0.796) in CRT group (p = 0.45). In patients receiving IMRT only, ACCI score equal to 3 was correlated with superior 5- for survival outcomes.

Characterized by pain, limp, stiffness and radiological narrowing joint space from the rapid destruction of the articular cartilage, ICH sometimes results in ankyloses. We present the case of a 10-year-old girl diagnosed with ICH based on arthroscopic inspection and synovium biopsy. The femoral deformity appeared gradually, like a cam-type femoroacetabular impingement. She was treated with intensive rehabilitation and immunosuppressive drug. We later performed an arthroscopic bumpectomy for residual symptoms. She achieved a favorable outcome as a 15-year-old at the latest follow-up.In 2016, Gunma University Hospital's Medical Accident Investigation Committee released a report reiterating the necessity of medical education and the need for surgeons to master non-technical skills. We designed a 17-h training course for surgical instructors, designed to teach participants how to sufficiently educate surgeon trainees and encourage their professional identity formation. A post-training survey showed that participants improved their awareness, and their behavioral changes led to favorable team performances. Many factors such as daily life events, neurotransmitter systems, and different brain areas could influence anxiety behavior in humans and animals. For example, opioids and androgens decrease anxiety behavior both in humans and animals. Furthermore, removing the testes (gonadectomy) causes higher levels of anxiety‑like behaviors, in which the administration of testosterone and opioid antagonist can reverse some of these behaviors. We review the effects of morphine and androgens on the modulation of anxiety behavior in gonadectomized animals. We begin by highlighting the effects of opioid drugs and androgens on the modulation of anxiety behavior that have been implicated in anxiety behavior. We then discuss the functional consequences of gonadectomy on anxiety behavior. However, its mechanism of action is unclear. Allergic airway inflammation plays a key role in the occurrence and development of asthma, in which changes in gut microbiota are involved. The present study investigated the influence of chiropractic therapy on allergic airway inflammation (AAI) and gut microbiota in an immature rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly into control (CN), AAI, and chiropractic (CP) groups. AAI and CP groups were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) to induce AAI. The CP group received chiropractic therapy during AAI modelling. AAI was assessed by cell counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and HE staining of lung tissues. Plasma OVA-sIgE, IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-10 levels were detected by ELISA. The most common diagnoses in men were lymphoma (61.8%) and benign changes (23.6%); while in women they were benign change (41.2%), breast carcinoma (37.8%) and lymphoma (16.7%). Besides benign changes, lymphoma and breast carcinoma were most common in women younger and older than 30 years, respectively. In patients with a history of malignancy, the most common diagnoses were metastasis from the known tumor and benign change; while in patients with a negative oncologic history and female patients without a history of breast cancer, the diagnosis was generally either lymphoma or benign change.     Carbonic anhydrase 9 (CA9), as a member of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme family, was an endogenous marker of hypoxia. Previous studies suggested CA9 expression was correlated with poor prognosis in multiple types of malignancies. Therefore, this study was to evaluate the role of CA9 in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) and to determine whether this biomarker was associated with patient clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis.

    We assessed 63 patients diagnosed with SNSCC in 2013-2017 who underwent curative surgery. Tumor specimens was immunohistochemically analyzed for CA9 expression. The expression levels of CA9 was evaluated in relation to clinicopathological factors and prognosis.

    Positive expression of CA9 was observed in 21 (33.3%) patients and was significantly correlated with local recurrence (p=0.016), overall survival (OS) (p=0.003) and disease-free survival (DFS) (p=0.002). In Cox's multivariate analysis, CA9 expression was an independent negative prognostic factor for OS (p=0.048) and DFS (p=0.019).

To formulate an optimal treatment strategy, we aim to clarify the risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in PTMC patients. This study retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent thyroidectomy during 1995-2015, and grouped them according to lymph node metastasis. Age, gender, tumor size, thyroid functions, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, multifocal tumor, extrathyroidal extensions, capsular invasion were analyzed. Of the 2434 PTMC subjects, proportion of patients with no LNM (NLNM), LNM, central LNM (CLNM), lateral LNM (LLNM), CLNM + LLNM were 82.9%, 17.1%, 7.0%, 7.6% and 2.5%. Patients with NLNM were older and had a lower proportion of males compared to patients with CLNM, LLNM and CLNM + LLNM (p less then 0.05). The NLNM group also had a smaller size of ultrasound tumor, lower proportion of multifocal tumor and extrathyroidal extension compared to CLNM, LLNM and CLNM + LLNM groups (p less then 0.05). On univariate analyses, male gender, age less then 45 years, tumor size of pathology (˃0.75 cm), multifocality, and extrathyroidal extension were significantly associated with LNM. This assay was used for screening 200 healthy donor sera collected prior to COVID-19 emergence (2017-2019), 185 serum/plasma samples of confirmed COVID-19 patients (n = 137) and 57 samples of viral RNA positive asymptomatic contacts (n = 51). The IgG response was studied in relation to duration and severity of illness.

    The ELISA demonstrated 97 % specificity and IgG detection in >50 %, 80 %, 93.8 % and 100 % of the patients respectively during the first, second, third and fourth week of illness. IgG detection rate was higher in patients with severe disease (SD, 90.9 %) than those with mild disease (MD, 68.8 %) during the second week of illness (P = 0.027). We sought to evaluate the relationship between the dimensionless index (DI)-the ratio of the left ventricular outflow tract time-velocity integral to that of the aortic valve jet-and mortality in these patients. Methods Seven hundred fifty-five patients with LG severe AS (defined by aortic valve area ≤1 cm2 or aortic valve area indexed to body surface area ≤0.6 cm2/m2 and mean aortic pressure gradient less then 40 mm Hg) and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% were studied. Flow status was defined according to stroke volume index less then 35 mL/m2 (low flow, LF) or ≥35 mL/m2 (normal flow, NF).   • Previous studies have found that neck circumference (NC) is associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors. This study investigated the relationship between NC and the incidence of angina pectoris (AP).

    Altogether 4821 participants (2212 males and 2609 females) from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) with a mean age of 63.4±11.0 years were selected in this study. Anthropometric measurements, including NC, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and body mass index (BMI), were collected at baseline. AP was defined as the first occurrence between baseline and 2011. Linear and logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association between NC and incidences of AP.

    There was a significant difference in NC between AP and controls in both male (41.1±3.1 cm vs 40.3±3.2 cm; p<0.001) and female (35.2±3.1 cm vs 34.9±2.9 cm; p=0.006). Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that NC (every cm increase) was independently associated with the incidence of AP in both male (odds ratio [OR] 1.067; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.035-1.100; p<0.001) and female (OR 1.067; 95% CI 1.035-1.101; p<0.001).

In this review, we describe lncRNA properties and highlight functional lncRNAs in these biological processes, with the goal of establishing links between lncRNAs and BAT. Based on the advances of lncRNAs in the regulation of BAT, we discussed the advantages of potential lncRNA-based obesity drugs.   • Estimates of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) help assess kidney function. Estimated GFR can be used to classify patients into one of six Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) categories as recommended by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes clinical practice guidelines; CKD1 ≥90, CKD2 60-89, CKD3a 45-59, CKD3b 30-44, CKD4 15-29 or CKD5 ≤15 mL/min/1.73 m2 The Modification of Diet and Renal Disease (MDRD) study formula was widely adopted to calculate eGFR. The CKD Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formula improved accuracy of CKD staging at eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 MDRD and CKD-EPI eGFR were calculated on 111 444 serum creatinine results from adult patients measured as part of the routine Clinical Chemistry service. Application of CKD-EPI eGFR reclassified 18% to a lower (13.9%) or higher (4.0%) CKD stage. CKD staging was lower when less then 65 years and higher when ≥65 years. Females were more often reclassified compared with males (2.6% vs 0.8%). Overall, CKD-EPI eGFR classified less with CKD (stages 3a-5), unless ≥75 years. Older males and inpatients had higher CKD stages when CKD-EPI eGFR was applied. It has been recommended to replace MDRD eGFR with CKD-EPI eGFR. In general, doing this will have little impact, however, for some patients their CKD classification will be different.

    Estimates of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) help assess kidney function. Estimated GFR can be used to classify patients into one of six Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) categories as recommended by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes clinical practice guidelines; CKD1 ≥90, CKD2 60-89, CKD3a 45-59, CKD3b 30-44, CKD4 15-29 or CKD5 ≤15 mL/min/1.73 m2 The Modification of Diet and Renal Disease (MDRD) study formula was widely adopted to calculate eGFR. The CKD Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formula improved accuracy of CKD staging at eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 MDRD and CKD-EPI eGFR were calculated on 111 444 serum creatinine results from adult patients measured as part of the routine Clinical Chemistry service. Application of CKD-EPI eGFR reclassified 18% to a lower (13.9%) or higher (4.0%) CKD stage. CKD staging was lower when less then 65 years and higher when ≥65 years.     To analyze and report the long-term outcomes of intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVM) treated with linear accelerator (LINAC)-based radiosurgery (LBRS) in the pediatric population.

    A series of 34 pediatric patients (≤18 years old) who were treated between 2002 and 2016 were analyzed. All patients were treated with LBRS in a single fraction, with a median dose of 16.8 Gy to the 80% isodose line. Median age at treatment was 14.4 years (range 5.5-18.9). Median AVM volume was 2.91 mL (range 0.228-27.313). Median modified radiosurgery-based AVM score was 0.83 (range 0.18-2.96). The most common presenting symptom was intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) (n = 22, 64.7%). Nine patients underwent intervention before LBRS, which included prior embolization or resection. Seven lesions were in eloquent locations, defined as basal ganglia, thalamus, or brainstem. Cerebral angiography was done to confirm obliteration.

    Median follow-up time was 98 months (range 36-200 months). Twenty-two of the 34 lesions were obliterated (64.7%) with median time to obliteration of 37 months (range 14-79). No deaths occurred during the follow up period; however, two patients experienced ICH after treatment. Three other patients were treated for symptomatic radiation necrosis.

The objective of this study was to retrospectively review our experience from a radiation planning standpoint and to determine whether current treatment methods provide adequate dose to target and collateral structures.

    A retrospective review of 52 patients (104 orbits) with bilateral thyroid eye disease and compressive optic neuropathy treated with RT (20 Gy in 10 fractions) at our institution. RT plans were analyzed for target volumes and doses. Visual fields, color plates, and visual acuity were assessed pretreatment and at last available follow-up post RT. A standardized, anatomic contour of the retro-orbital space was applied to these retrospective plans to determine dose to the entire space, rather than the self-selected target structure.

Fundoscopy showed diffuse bilateral cotton wool spots that prompted the diagnosis of SSc/lupus overlap syndrome.

    The confluence of patient symptoms was disguised as separate diseases, but the funduscopic finding of cotton wool spots in a patient without known risk factors prompted further investigation and the correct diagnosis. She was started on immunosuppressant therapy but unfortunately died four months later after developing right heart failure.

  • Within the insensitization by electronarcosis and the bleeding processes performed at the pig's slaughterhouses, there are some factors that hinder the achievement of an adequate slaughter of these animals, being this a critical phase in which animal welfare must be guaranteed; the objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficiency of insensitization by electronarcosis and two types of bleeding direction (horizontal and vertical). Dependent variables were measured as indicators of animal welfare (absence of the corneal reflex, absence of reflex of sensitivity to painful stimuli, attempts to reinstatement or posture recovery and vocalization), after the stunning and bleeding process, in four slaughterhouses of national category in "Eje Cafetero", Colombia. The methodological approach included the binomial distribution, descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing and statistical significance. The results show that the efficiency of the insensitization procedures and type of bleeding direction depends on multiple aspects, including the tranquility of the animals during their handling, the correct position of the insensitization clamps, the amperage used and the time between insensitization and bleeding. An interesting debate concerning the potential relationship between androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and SARS-CoV-2 infection has recently been opened in the case of prostate cancer (PC), and the aim of this multi-centre cohort study was to investigate the incidence and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostrate cancer (mCRPC).

    We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of patients with mCRPC who developed SARS-CoV-2 infection, and recorded their baseline clinical characteristics, their history of PC and SARS-CoV-2 infection, and their oncological status and treatment at the time of infection. Although cutaneous melanoma accounts for a minority of all types of skin cancer, it causes the greatest number of skin cancer related deaths worldwide. Oxidative stress and redox homeostasis have been shown to be involved at each stage of a malignant melanocyte transformation, called melanomagenesis, as well as during drug resistance. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important and diverse role that regulate many aspects of skin cell behaviors ranging from proliferation and stemness, to oxidative damage and cell death. On the other hand, antioxidants are associated with melanoma spread and metastasis. Overall, the contribution of redox homeostasis to melanoma development and progression is controversial and highly complex. The aim of this study is to examine the association between redox homeostasis and the melanomagenic process. To this purpose we are presenting what is currently known about the role of ROS in melanoma initiation and progression. In addition, we are discussing the role of antioxidant mechanisms during the spread of the disease and in cases of melanoma drug resistance. Although challenging, targeting redox homeostasis in melanoma progression remains to be a promising therapeutic approach, especially valid during melanoma drug resistance.Tissue engineering technology requires porous scaffolds, based on biomaterials, which have to mimic as closely as possible the morphological and anisotropic mechanical properties of the native tissue to substitute. Anisotropic fibrous scaffolds fabricated by template-assisted electrospinning are investigated in this study. Fibers of electrospun Polycaprolactone (PCL) were successfully arranged spatially into honeycomb structures by using well-shaped 3D micro-architected metal collectors. Fibrous scaffolds present 2 × 4 mm2 wide elementary patterns with low and high fiber density areas. Distinct regions of the honeycomb patterns were analyzed through SEM images revealing different fiber diameters with specific fiber orientation depending on the regions of interest. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of patients with mCRPC who developed SARS-CoV-2 infection, and recorded their baseline clinical characteristics, their history of PC and SARS-CoV-2 infection, and their oncological status and treatment at the time of infection. The primary study end point was the death rate and the possible impact of the patients' PC-related history and treatments on mortality.
