These bacteria produce metabolites, such as secondary bile salts from primary bile salts, hydrogen sulfide, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), which are likely to promote inflammation and subsequently cancer development.

Recent studies suggest that gut microbiota-derived metabolites have a role in CRC progression and causation and hence, could be implicated in CRC diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is implicated in the pathogenesis of several cancers among humans. The role of HPV as one of the etiological agents in esophageal carcinogenesis is partially unknown. We assessed whether the available evidence supports the association of HPV with risk and prognosis in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs).

For this systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and SCOPUS were searched up to February 2021. The included studies were prospective or retrospective studies that evaluated the incidence, risk, and prognosis of HPV-16/18-related ESCCs in adult subjects. The primary outcome was the incidence rate of ESCC in HPV-16/18 carriers. Secondary outcomes included the risk of ESCCs compared with healthy HPV-16/18 carriers (expressed as odds ratios [ORs] with 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) and the survival of HPV + versus HPV- ESCCs.

The search identified 1649 unique citations, of which 145 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the pooled analysis (16,484 patients). The pooled HPV prevalence in ESCCs was 18.2% (95% CI 15.2-21.6%; P < 0.001). A significantly increased ESCC risk was associated with HPV infection (OR = 3.81; 95% CI 2.84-5.11; P < 0.001). Main limitation were methods of HPV detection (DNA only), race of populations included (mainly Asiatic countries) and lack of adjustment for other prognostic factors.

The findings suggest that HPV-16/18 is detectable in about 1 on 5 cases of ESCC with different prevalences across the world. It is moderately but significantly associated with a diagnosis of ESCC. Further epidemiological studies are needed to confirm and increase the current knowledge of the subject.

We review recent evidence on suicide among older adults, examine risk factors contributing to vulnerability to late-life suicide, and summarize possible interventions.

We found a steadily increasing rate of late-life suicide in the USA in the past decade. Evidence supporting the integration of depression care managers into primary care for risk reduction is among the strongest to date. Pharmacologic and neuromodulation studies should be considered in geriatric depression complicated by suicidality. Broad societal campaigns about suicide education, as well as active outreach to psychiatric patients after discharge or a suicidal crisis, prevent suicidal behavior. Growing research supports an integrative multidisciplinary approach. Suicide is a complex and multifaceted behavior with numerous casual points for intervention. Access to deadly means, presence of depression, disease, disability, and social disconnection are factors that increase vulnerability. Quality geriatric care, regular screening in primary nd emergency care settings, and a multidisciplinary approach are necessary to mitigate risk factors. The COVID-19 pandemic amplifies need for a more aggressive approach.Oral cancer is a very common tumor worldwide with high incidence and mortality. The treatment of oral cancer involves surgery, radio- and chemotherapy; however, high failure rates and toxicity are noticed. Thus, the search of new drugs aiming a more effective treatment is welcomed. Natural products present chemopreventive and anti-cancer effects. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring antioxidant that contains several health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities. This review discusses the different action mechanisms of resveratrol related in the in vitro and in vivo studies using models of oral cancer.Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is one of the most complex rheumatological diseases to diagnose and treat because, in the early stages of the disease, the inflammatory low **** pain is often difficult to identify, and patients are diagnosed when they already have advanced structural processes. There is an urgent need to establish healthcare models that allow optimization of the management of these patients. The objective of this work is to propose a care model that is adaptable to the factual realities of Latin America. A systematic search of the literature terms (MeSH) was performed to search associated terms. Taking the model of the REAL-PANLAR project as an example and incorporating some related literature, a model of centers of excellence for SpA in Latin America is proposed that can be reasonably established and implemented. This model proposes 3 types of centers of excellence for SpA according to the level of complexity of each institution, and its criteria are defined based on indicators of structure, processes, and results. This is the first effort in Latin America to try to standardize the care of patients with spondyloarthritis. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/dcz0415.html Key Points • The unmet needs in Latin America in the care of SpondyloArthritis (SpA), demand solutions that facilitate the rapid and assertive access of patients to specialized centers such as Center of Excellence in SpA. • This project facilitates the standardization of high-quality care for patients with SpA, starting from its diagnosis and up to clinical follow-up. • Due to standardization of care, better clinical and safety outcomes are achieved for patients, as well as patient-reported outcomes. • By standardized models of care, will be achieved a reduction in the progress of this pathology and optimization in the use of high-complexity services and high-cost therapies, improving cost-efficiency for public health systems in each country.
