While many states have legal provisions to extend workers' compensation eligibility to day laborers or domestic workers hired directly by homeowners or families, little is known about the nature or frequency of injury claims submitted on behalf of these "residential employees."

We examined California workers' compensation claims records for injuries that appear to have occurred in residential settings between 2008 and 2018 and where the employer of record was an individual or family. We examined the demographic, occupational, and injury characteristics of our sample and analyzed factors that contribute to the likelihood of a claim resulting in some sort of payment.

We identified 5,463 workers' compensation claims that were likely submitted on behalf of residential employees. Claims most commonly reflected injuries to workers performing housekeeping tasks, followed by construction/maintenance and caregiving. Workers performing construction/maintenance or gardening/landscaping tasks were more likely to be injured on the same day of hire and were more likely to require hospitalization or emergency treatment for their injuries; however, these workers also had a smaller proportion of claims that resulted in payment. We found that employment tenure had the biggest impact on the likelihood of payment, with the odds increasing sharply after the first day of work.

Although the claims in our data set likely represent only a small fraction of all injuries to residential day laborers and domestic workers during this period, we suggest that workers' compensation claims can provide valuable clues for better understanding occupational injuries among workers in this largely informal sector.

To explore the feasibility and possible effects of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) delivered to the supplementary motor area (SMA) on tic severity and motor system neurophysiology in children with Tourette syndrome.

Ten children with Tourette syndrome (eight males, two females; 9-15y) participated in this open-label, phase 1 clinical trial. Treatment consisted of 1800 low-frequency (1Hz) neuronavigated robotic rTMS (100% resting motor threshold) to the SMA, bilaterally for 15 sessions. The primary outcome was a change in Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) total score from baseline to posttreatment. Secondary outcome measures included changes in magnetic resonance spectroscopy metabolite concentrations, TMS neurophysiology measures, TMS motor maps, and clinical assessments (anxiety, depression) from baseline to the end of treatment.

The YGTSS score decreased from baseline after treatment (p<0.001; Cohen's d=2.9). All procedures were well-tolerated.

Single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry is a practical method for studying microbial aerosols. However, the related mass spectral characteristics of single-cell microorganisms have not yet been studied systematically; hence, further investigations are necessary.

Different microbial cells were grown and directly aerosolized in the laboratory. These aerosols were then drawn into a single-particle mass spectrometer platform, and single-cell mass spectra profiles were obtained in real-time. The biological characteristics, ion variation trends, and microbial types were analyzed with either laser pulse energy or laser fluence.

The single-particle mass spectra contained prominent peaks that could be attributed to the presence of biological matter, such as organic phosphate and nitrogen, amino acids, and spore-associated calcium complexes. Limited types of average mass spectral patterns were present, and a significant correlation was found between the ion intensity trend (presence and absence of peaks) and laser ionization energy (expressed by the total positive ion intensity). Although a single spectral data point does not contain all the peaks of the average spectrum, it covers most of the characteristic peaks and could be identified using a machine learning algorithm. After the analysis of single-particle mass spectra, we found that using multi-group features (e.g., peak intensity ratio of m/z +47 and +41, peak intensity ratio of
